START RANT!
The almost ten year grandlad lad will be eligible for free music lessons at school next year.
Swell, you say!
Not so fast!
"No way!", says his Dad. "I don't want do be bothered with all that noise at home!"
(I guess I was away when the news broke about parenting being a "no hassle" job.)
Fortunately I saw this one coming (a good sign was when the kids were not allowed to play CD's in the car without headsets - and if they slipped up and happened to sing along they got yelled at). Of course when they're in the car with Grandpa and Woody they are not allowed to listen to CDs with head-phones. Playing CDs is a communal activity shared by all - singing along is strongly encouraged! We all get a chance to pick, so the kids can do their "I only listen to what I know" bit, while Woody and I strategize "our picks" to get them to hear new stuff.
In anticipation of this family crisis I had previously purchased an eight octave electronic keyboard with most of the bells and whistles (and which you can listen to through head phones) which has been cluttering up my dining room table for over a year).
The use of a keyboard with head-set has gained son-in-laws approval.

At least their Mom was used to having music around the house. I played piano and guitar, not at all well and their Mom played guitar and Banjo - quite well. We regularly had family folk-song sing alongs. (I must admit that my love of music around the house was greatly diminished when my eldest son decided to learn the sax and clarinet.)

BEJING — A ring of gangsters who traded in the bodies of women they murdered, selling them as brides to keep dead bachelors happy in the afterlife, has been arrested in China.
The arrests have exposed a trade that places a higher value on women when they are dead than when they are alive.

Yang arranged for the woman to stay in a guesthouse in Yanchuan county where Liu offered him £666 for her. Yang refused, until Liu told him that the woman would be worth much more dead than alive. The next morning the two men set out across the Yellow River to meet “Old Li” in Xixian County, Shanxi province. Old Li agreed to buy the woman’s body for £1,050 and to complete the deal late at night on the Yanshuiguan bridge.
The next day Yang killed the woman and took her body by taxi to the bridge where Li was waiting and handed over £1,000 for her. For his part in the deal, Liu received £300 and Yang came away with a loss of £200 after his expenses.
Back at the guesthouse, Yang told an old acquaintance, Hui, that he had found an easy way to make money. The two men agreed to go into the body business together. Last November they sought out a prostitute they knew in nearby Yan’an — the city where Chairman Mao began his Communist revolution — but she threw them out after they said that they could not afford to pay her £20. They returned the next morning and killed her.
On December 3 they completed a similar body handover with Li on the bridge. This time they made only £530 because the buyer was unhappy with the quality of the body and, after costs, Yang and his two friends each earned £100 on that deal.
Old Li had made a name for himself in Xixian county by selling clothes to outfit the dead and by handing out cards that offered to help families in need of a spirit marriage. They want young and good-looking dead brides for their sons and regard the family of the girl as “in-laws”. Police discovered that Li paid between £530 and £660 for a body and sold it on for as much as £2,300.

Hi all! I've missed everyone but I've been so busy with working overtime here lately. The word has gotten out that I know how to use Powerpoint (not that big a deal) and I've been drafted to hellp people with their presentations. The problem being my old duties haven't stopped. It's like working two jobs and getting paid for one.
My boss has had to drive me home a couple of times because I've had to miss the bus.
I hope everyone is doing well.
I'm listenening to Meat Loaf as I type this. I'm sorry that he is coming to St. Pete but not Tampa. I have a fear of driving over the bridge at night between St. Pete and Tampa. There are so many accidents on that thing and I don't see that well at night. I won't chance it.

It's going to be a weird day of negotiations at the Turner networks. I have a feeling my ability to work with them is going to be a lot less convenient. They want to pull all their jobs in house, which will be good for them and makes sense, but it will be much harder for me to work there (no edit assists, etc.) and a pain to get there. Different equipment, and lots of people who treat it as a 9-5 job and not a fun, creative environment. Very corporate. Ugh.

My neighbor the terrorist has got to get rugs on his floor. He comes in around 10 pm and moves around too much between then and, last night, 3 am. Since he's right above me, it's the sound of shoes clomping on a wood floor. There's also an occasonal sound of something being dragged and, perhaps, a sofa bed being opened. I slept quite badly and I am late this morning for everything, which includes laundry and the NYPL. tonight I'm seeing Zankel Hall for the first time. I'm going to a concert sponsored by Marlyn Horne.

Good Morning!
I'm up...
Well, I got up at 2:00...
Then around 5:00...
Then around 8:00... -At that point I moved out to the couch in the living room... where it was warmer... and quiet! Alas, my radiator is still not working, and appears the sealing of the leak has only made whatever is causing the "knocking" louder, much louder. I literally thought someone was hitting the pipe with a hammer. It even woke up my roommate... Upstairs! I listened for a while, and it does sound like something mechanical, there's a scraping sound before the "knock" - which is more like a "hit" or a "pound". Any DRs have any idea what would cause such a loud knocking sound in the pipes?
In any case... I'm up.

Right now I'm listening to Manhattan Transfer Live, a concert from 1978 recorded at the Hammersmith in London.
No plans for any video or DVD watching this weekend. Our English friends are here (and it's 10 friggin' degrees outside). I'm having dinner with them tonight at East of Eighth on West 23rd Street. It's a fun, relaxed place with good food. We went there in September when they were here for another visit and they liked it so much they requested that we go again. Tomorrow we head out to Long Island for a fun day of visiting and eating and Sunday we are back in the city.

*I remember playing for a community theatre production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas many years ago, and due to "technical" <wink, wink> reasons, they had to cancel the opening night performance. However, since everyone had already bought their food and drink for the party, they still held the party. And it was a great party! Since we didn't have a show, it started at 7:30 instead of post-show at 11:00. More time for merriment!

DR elmore - I was almost going to go to that concert tonight too, but once my friend, Paul, told me he was coming up from Florida this weekend... This was also the week of all the master classes that are part of Marilyn Horne's organization. Tuesday was Barbara Cook, Wednesday was Evelyn Lear, and yesterday was Ms. Horne, herself. Alas, the master classes sold out almost as soon as the tickets went on sale.
Enjoy the concert, and be sure to bundle up - those crosswinds around Carnegie Hall are always quite "cross".

Yep, Miss Karen, you sure did! I'm fine, dealing with a new crisis on the job front that has stirred up my anxieties. Perhaps it's just transferring the anxiety over my dad.
I've started reading Rubert Everett's new autobiography: filled with gossip, wonderful anecdotes and touching portraits of friends and actors he's worked with. The man has a way with a turn of phrase. I'm to the point where he's filmed DANCE WITH A STRANGER and heading to Hollywood. He's the first actor who's admitted affairs with Susan Sarandon and Ian McKellen

I love Glynis Johns' rendition of "Send in the Clowns," but I was blown away by Angela Lansbury's version. I really love hearing it sung with just a bit more vocal prowess than Glynis, but for that moment in the show itself, Glynis was sublime. I saw the original production, and that moment gave me chills. (So did "The Miller's Son.")

Your anxiety is understandable, so your life probably will be "all-a-jumble" for a while, but when the going gets tough, remember all of your friends are in your corner.
I was reading a review about his book just the other day. Sounds delicious -- gossip, anecdotes, and tales of affairs... my kind'a book!

I know I had or will have the DVR capture YOLANDA AND THE THIEF off TCM at some point, but until I turn everything on, I don't know if it's there or not.
I only have the movie on VHS, and I wanted to see if the broadcast was better than the commercial videotape I have. (It certainly should be.)
Warners has said there is one more Astaire DVD box to come which I assume would include YOLANDA, THE BELLE OF NEW YORK, ROYAL WEDDING (rescued from public domain hell at long last), and A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS. When it's coming is another matter.

DR Jane ~ In reference to the discussion about your Monster Dog a few days ago, have you read "Marley and Me" by George Grogan? (Since I'm just a few posts past "newbie," you HHWayers have probably already covered this book, so stop right here if this is a "been there, done that" but if not here goes the plug):
"Marley and Me" -- All of you dog lovers need to read it, it is charming, delightful, funny, and moving (I needed a tissue during the last couple of chapters). We have a Marley in our house -- Deuce, a Humane Society reject that's part (we can only guess) Black Lab, Border Collie, Chow, and we're pretty sure Coyote (to account for his wild streak). A true Wild Man, but very loveable, incredibly doofy, and most endearing.

So, the boiler guys and the property manager came over about 10 minutes ago. The steam valve on the radiator in the kitchen/dining room area is being replaced as I type this post. And the valve for the radiator in my bedroom will be replaced this afternoon. -They just need to get the part. Luckily(?), the company is working nearby at another property on a major problem, so while they're waiting for things to settle there, they were able to head over here in the interim.
*And I have to say I loved the "bargaining" technique of the property manager: "So, since this will only take five minutes, you can do it now, right?" -Oh.. Sure. "So, I know that you still need to get the part for the other radiator, but that will only take about twenty minutes, so you can be back before 3:00, right?" Well.. Maybe. "Well, he has to leave this afternoon, and he has to have heat tonight in his bedroom, so it has to be done by 3:00." -Oh, OK.

I really enjoyed "CSI" last night. Liev Schreiber adds an interesting dimension to the show, I think.
And this despite the fact that the writers seem bent on creating an adversarial relationship between him and the rest of the CSI crew....setting the stage, of course, for William Peterson's return.

The street I walk down to get to work is a ridiculous wind tunnel for no reason I can determine. So I had my whole head be-scarfed and mummified, except for my eyes which were behind my glasses. Nevertheless, my left eyeball froze in its socket.

No, but the knocking pipes kept me up when I was in NY. It sounded like people were banging on them with sledge hammers. And the whole apartment was so unbelievably hot I slept with the windows open, adding to the noise.
Thank goodness there seems to be a "no unneccesary honking" ordinance now!

But i think it would be good not to put spoiler info in the first line (if you don't like putting spoiler space, which i would do). Especially if it's a show that many people here watch.

I see what DR RonP meant when he said he'd like more family and less solving the mystery by dream only. I do notice when the girls are absent on an episode. But i guess sometimes i'm unaware when the mystery is solved mostly by dream. Alison did do a bit of stuff while awake (she went to the guy's apartment a few times).
I think my favorite part is when alison figures out who did it but we get to watch how that person gets their due. It's not always obvious (pawn shop this week ...)
As for the other dead guy and the body parts. I think they showed a newsclip saying that the parts were found buried outside the house.

I always loved this movie, but when I watched it again not long ago, Benjamin comes off as a bit of a stalker now when he follows her to college...(he was hapless and romantic when I saw it as a teen, but now in my 50s I had to fight the creepy vibe to try to keep thinking hapless and romantic...)

*I remember playing for a community theatre production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas many years ago, and due to "technical" <wink, wink> reasons, they had to cancel the opening night performance. However, since everyone had already bought their food and drink for the party, they still held the party. And it was a great party! Since we didn't have a show, it started at 7:30 instead of post-show at 11:00. More time for merriment!
I think that that's a great idea...to have the party on the no-longer-opening opening night. AND how's this for coincidence...on Saturday, Joshua is auditioning for role in a local production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (which would not have conflicted with Juno and the Paycock). Weird huh?? ;)

Right now I'm listening to Manhattan Transfer Live, a concert from 1978 recorded at the Hammersmith in London.
I love that recording, except the officially-released-in-the-US CD has some audio problems...at least on the copy that I have. :P But I have a copy of the CD that was only released in Japan years ago and it sounds wonderful. I don't know what could've happened.

I love Glynis Johns' rendition of "Send in the Clowns," but I was blown away by Angela Lansbury's version. I really love hearing it sung with just a bit more vocal prowess than Glynis, but for that moment in the show itself, Glynis was sublime. I saw the original production, and that moment gave me chills. (So did "The Miller's Son.")
I was searching youtube.com yesterday and came across a video of "Send in the Clowns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esCdSLHles0)" sung by Zarah Leander, a German actress, in 1978. The video portion is just a bunch of photos of Zarah from her career, but the song is very well done. I made an audio recording of it. :)

I've had a very fun afternoon viewing many varied items.
I began with the National Figure Skating Championships: the short programs.
Let me say that even without Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen, we have a formidable ladies group. The top six all skated gorgeously, pretty much flawlessly, too, and with great assurance.
Of course, short programs are very specific in the content, and often people excel at them and then fall apart in the long with more elements and the exhaustion factor taking control of one's abilities. Still, we've seen lots of sloppy, disastrous short programs in the past, and I can't remember a short program compeitition with so many outstanding performances turned in by all the top ranked ladies. And they're all teenagers.

I was disappointed in the coverage of the men's short program. Yes, we got to see Evan Lysechek and Johnny Weir and a couple of Ryan Bradley's jumps from his fun-looking program (they ended up as the top three men), but what about the others? Very irritating that the men were given scant coverage in this three plus hour program.
Weir's program was very solid but astonishingly slow for him. Even in his jumps, he made all the revolutions effortlessly, but they seemed in slow motion compared to the jumps of others. Lysechek's jumps seemed a little jerkier and a tad less secure, but his program overall had more passion and pizzaz. Should be a very interesting long program shootout between the two of them.

My second volume of Charlie Chan films did come in the mail today, so I put in CHARLIE CHAN AT THE CIRCUS. I'm sure I'd seen this once before, but I had no memory of the murderer's identity and was totally fooled by the outcome.
The transfer isn't what I'd call super sharp, but the dirt and scratches and artifacts have all been digitally removed, and the film couldn't look better from that perspective.
Nice to have these classics in such a nice package.

I also looked at the special features on the disc. There's a thirty minute overview of the four films in the set, and there was some good information in this featurette about the directors and some of the other casting. Nicely done.
There was also a restoration comparison to show how much effort had gone into cleaning up these films for DVD release. Impressive comparisons.

I finished my afternoon wawtching the first twenty minutes of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, the latest film version released in 2005. I keep going back to it as a moth to a flame. It's so beautifully done, so romantic, and one of those films one can lose oneself in. I used to read about those people who would go to THE SOUND OF MUSIC dozens and dozens of times who said they lost themselves in the film and couldn't wait to return to it. I kind of feel the same way about this film. I adore the mannerisms of the period, and it's comforting to see such deportment.
It's also a lovely transfer, so it's beautiful to watch as well.

Hi all! I've missed everyone but I've been so busy with working overtime here lately. The word has gotten out that I know how to use Powerpoint (not that big a deal) and I've been drafted to hellp people with their presentations. The problem being my old duties haven't stopped. It's like working two jobs and getting paid for one.
My boss has had to drive me home a couple of times because I've had to miss the bus.
I hope everyone is doing well.
I'm listenening to Meat Loaf as I type this. I'm sorry that he is coming to St. Pete but not Tampa. I have a fear of driving over the bridge at night between St. Pete and Tampa. There are so many accidents on that thing and I don't see that well at night. I won't chance it.

Re MEDIUM - SPOILER question
Anyone have any thoughts on the notion in the episode (voiced by the guy who got chopped up) that the girl would have appreciated that the shy guy was watching the girl for so long and cared so much about her? I found it creepy, not remotely romantic.
I think in this case it was creepy. Although the girl sort of imply that she would have liked to get to know the guy better. So who knows, maybe she could have liked it.
I guess the fact that the guy really cared for her but was so shy could make some girls like it.

I was going to make a joke about that, but instead I raised my hand and went to him. But instead of going to a computer, he put my checks in an envelope and put them in a drop box inside the bank - before I even had a chance to say no. He gave me a handwritten receipt and said they do the drop box at the end of the day and that it gets credited as any normal deposit made during the day would. I get very nervous about that sort of thing and wished I could have stopped him before he deposited my deposit in the drop box. I'll call tomorrow morning to make sure it got in and credited.

I don't honestly know if a cab would be a good idea or not. I know it would be at least a hundred dollars (one way) from my house to there. I could drive part of the way but then there's the "where would I leave Bonnie" question.
No one I know likes Meat Loaf. And it's a work night. It's just one of those no win things. Maybe next time he'll come to Tampa.
I did see him several years ago. In fact, when I was driving home, I think he waved at me. The tour bus was driving beside me. I waved at it and a light came on and several guys with long hair (back when he had long hair) waved back. :D

Bank problems seem to be the rule of the day. We switched to a new system and nothing is being posted for anyone who has an account with the credit union.
I have some savings but at least my bill money goes to my regular bank. My only concern is the payment for Bonnie. They had better not charge me a late fee for something that is beyond my control.
Oh, BTW (By The Way in internet speak), yesterday made 2 years that I have Bonnie. I counted the mileage and have still driven less then 5 thousand miles.

I didn't think leggings could really get any worse, unless this year saw the comeback of leggings' first cousin, the stirrup pant, but boy was I wrong. And when I say, "boy," I really do mean "boy." All the rage for this fall will be men in tights, and we're not talking about football.
At the Marni men's runway show in Milan last week, the designer sent men down the catwalk in leggings made of microfiber cotton and wool, which would not have been as bad if they were, say, black, but they were violet and forest green. And did I say stirrups pants would be worse than leggings? The men's leggings had stirrup straps.
While I could maybe see this working in some big cities in Europe, I just cannot imagine men in leggings walking around L.A

"I don't want do be bothered with all that noise at home!"...In anticipation of this family crisis I had previously purchased an eight octave electronic keyboard with most of the bells and whistles (and which you can listen to through head phones) which has been cluttering up my dining room table for over a year).
The use of a keyboard with head-set has gained son-in-laws approval.

"Australia Day" is January 26th. Commonwealth Day is May 24th. (It used to be Empire Day). I doubt anyone bothers with it at all. May 24th was the birthday of Queen Victoria. The day is still a holiday in Canada I think.
More people acknowledge Australia day this century than they did in my youth. The problem with the date is that it is already in School summer vacation so is nothing special - and Australians are really not patriotic (except in following sport).
Australia Day is the anniversary of the invasion of this continent by Europeans.

Thank heavens this week is over, but I found myself engaging in retail therapy again today. I just can't stay away from the store that's closing. I was back in the shoe department today and bought 3 more pair of shoes. The prices are SOOO low. I don't need tennis shoes right now, but I wear tennis shoes out fairly regularly, so I'll dig those out when I need them. I was going to give an excuse for the show buying, but there isn't one. It was fun. So it was my third trip to the sale, but I ran into a woman who had been in the store for 3 hours!!! She had more in her cart and set back at the cashier than I purchased in 3 trips.....doesn't that mean it's ok to go back again tomorrow?

Miss Karen-MARLEY AND ME came out while we were petless, and I had no intention of getting another pet. For the first time in my life I was free of obligations at home. I wanted to know what freedom felt like, and I’m still waiting. Keith was miserable without a dog and I knew eventually we would get one. I was afraid if I read about a true Monster Dog I wouldn’t give in on a puppy.
Our “Monster Dog” is really the calmest puppy we have ever had, however, being a puppy, he has had his moments.
Oh, I have yet to watch MEDIUM. It is okay though, I figured out very quickly I shouldn’t be reading your comments.

I have just returned from a delightful concert at Zankel Hall presented by Carnegie Hall and the Marilyn Horne Foundation. Four excellent singers, a guest appearance by wonderful Metropolitan Opera tenor Marcello Giordani, and a lot of beautiful song accompanied by five excellent pianists. The theme was "The Gypsy In My Soul" and the beginning set was Spanish, followed by Dvorak's beautiful Gypsy Melodies and ending with the four soloists performing Brahm's Gypsy Song. The concert, scheduled to begin at 7:30 began around 7:45, and the whole thing lasted 90 minutes. A perfect amount of time.
I just ordered the Dvorak songs from Amazon.com, and here I am.

How did I find that? I just moved my cursor around and any time it acted like it found something clickable, I clicked. I found a Skinner/Riply song (I Miss the Mountains) on the page for "Brain from Planet X"...along with the "this" above.
An anomaly to be sure. The site does say click on the album cover for audio samples. Perhaps theire aren't meant to be any?

Miss Karen-MARLEY AND ME came out while we were petless, and I had no intention of getting another pet. For the first time in my life I was free of obligations at home. I wanted to know what freedom felt like, and I’m still waiting. Keith was miserable without a dog and I knew eventually we would get one. I was afraid if I read about a true Monster Dog I wouldn’t give in on a puppy.
Our “Monster Dog” is really the calmest puppy we have ever had, however, being a puppy, he has had his moments.
Oh, I have yet to watch MEDIUM. It is okay though, I figured out very quickly I shouldn’t be reading your comments.

The other day, I was digging in the sand with a bunch of four-year-old boys. They were making sand castles by filling their buckets with wet sand, turning them over, and sitting on them. Then they'd get up and pick up the bucket, and there would be a sand castle. Since the process involves sitting and therefore the tuchus and they so like to say that word, they called the castles Tuchus Butt Castles.
I really like this phrase, but there aren't many opportunities to use it in day-to-day conversation. So I am advocating its use as an exclamation of surprise or dismay. For example:
Me: I'd like a large Cherry Coke, please.
Guy at the pizza place: I'm sorry, but the Cherry Coke is out of order.
Me: Well, tuchus butt castle!
Think it'll catch on?

I liked it a lot, and there's still a lot I need to process. But I know I liked it. However, there was a family sitting in front of us with a teenage son, and whenever more provocative language was used, or actions happened on stage... I don't think I've ever seen someone - the father - clean their eyeglasses so much. ;)

Had a full evening of enjoyable viewing.
I began by finishing PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Loved it as much this time as all other times.

Next, I watched the special features on the PRIDE AND PREJUDICE DVD. There was an HBO: First Look special, a featurette on putting together the cast, another on the cast working together, and a brief documentary about Jane Austen. I also looked at the theatrical trailer.

I found I had recorded on the DVR three movies: DIE! DIE! MY DARLING, YOLANDA AND THE THIEF, and SUMMER HOLIDAY. The latter, I have on laserdisc, but the TCM broadcast is sharper albeit with a darker look and not as vivid Technicolor as the laser. YOLANDA, which I just looked at a few seconds of, looks luminous, and I'll be burning a DVD of it tomorrow. DIE! DIE! was full frame - boo!

MONK had a few chuckles, and it was nice to see Sean Astin as the guest star, but I guess the writers just aren't bothering with doing standard mysteries any more. They're going more the COLUMBO route of showing us the murderer and then watching as Monk puts together the clues.
Worked great on Columbo, but here, not so much.

PSYCH made me laugh a lot as Sean and Gus attempt to give the police captain his confidence back. Cute, simple little mystery with James Roday being his usual adorable self.

When someone at the bank usually asks if you have a straight deposit, they do it right then and give you a stamped deposit slip. I would not have been pleased.
It all really matters not! Even if you have a teller-stamped receipt for a deposit, the bank has the right to "correct it" when they deicde an error has been made (even theirs).

It's a hard show to describe in just a few sentences, so I'm not even going to bother. For now, I shall just say that I liked it. A lot. Great cast. Great band. Simple, but very effective lighting. Good sound design. Etc., etc., etc.
It's definitely not a show for everyone, and the way I'd advise anyone who's thinking about seeing the show would be to show them the song titles. If they don't flinch at "You're F*cked", then they should like the show. Or at least give it a fair chance.
And, yes, they do sing with microphones. And quite well too.

Well, the radiator/boiler/heating guys weren't able to make it back here this afternoon. So, they'll be coming in the morning between 8:00-9:00... Which is OK, since I want to get up early-ish anyway. I haven't heard any more knocking tonight - they bled the radiator earlier - and the radiator in the kitchen/dining area seems to be providing enough heat right now for the ground floor.

'SVU' Crisis Averted: Seen Here First
I told you several weeks ago that NBC was trying not to pay "Law & Order SVU" stars Chris Meloni and Mariska Hargitay what they wanted after eight years and many Emmy awards and nominations.
Yesterday came the news that the actors will get $330,000 per episode next season. They’re staying even though, frankly, they’re getting less than they deserve.
SVU is one of NBC’s only dependable hits, and it will play in syndication until both actors are great-grandparents. This is what the public doesn’t realize about TV series. The networks and the show’s producers make money way after the stars of shows see their last pennies.
Recently, I discussed this with Larry Hagman. I had always thought he had a piece of "Dallas." He told me he does not.
Hagman is by no means in the poor house, but he does not get any residuals now from “Dallas” playing over and over again on the SoapNet channel. Same for the stars of other hit shows now filling the cable black hole of programming.
So three cheers for Hargitay and Meloni. The next big question at NBC is what to do with the original “Law & Order” series.
Last year, there was a question of possible cancellation. But the new speculation is that NBC will keep it around until it breaks the record for longest-running series ever — and then send it off into rerun history.
So far, "Gunsmoke" holds that honor, at 20 years. This only the 17th season for “Law & Order.”
