Title: EIGHT COOKIES
Post by: bk on January 18, 2008, 12:32:01 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like beating a dead horse, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently eating eight cow cookies and saying "They're moovelous."

From today's NY Times review of Cloverfield:

Quote
The film is too dumb to offend anything except your intelligence, and the monster does cut a satisfying swath through the cast, so your only complaint may be, What took it so long?...Rarely have I rooted for a monster with such enthusiasm.

You know you're a geek when you wake up at 4am thinking about tweaking your computer. I went to bed at around 11 (after beginning the restore at around 6pm) having installed XP, reloaded programs and made sure the computer was working and stable so Anthony could get the possible craft project in gear. I was dreaming about the computer (I can't remember anything specific) and at 4am I was wide awake. I have now downloaded the latest versions of Real Player, Spyware Terminator, Quick Time (without I-Tunes), Firefox, Audacity, Tweak UI, the upgraded Media Player and my special icons (which I have in a folder on my work computer) so I will continue the tweaking this weekend. I also plan a trip to Comp USA (for a store that's going out of business the price reductions are not very good) to get a piece of geek equipment that I'm told may help to recover some of the software still on the old hard drive. If it works I will be in geek heaven!

Giving your intellectual prowess a boost right now is a subtle and yet significant Mercury-Uranus 30-degree rapport from Aquarius to Pisces (8:50AM PST). This celestial contact is important for two reasons: Uranus is considered the higher octave to Mercury, and this link brings together the last two signs of the zodiac. While few professional astrologers are going to claim that a Mercury-Uranus aspect of this type will lead to enlightenment, it can coincide with revelations and ingenious thoughts which might lead to real-world innovations.

To begin:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR CHARLES POGUE!

TOD:
DVD:  PARINEETA - a marvelous Indian film, based on an Indian novel.  Beautiful to look at, great story-telling, memorable characters.
THE INN OF THE SIXTH HAPPINESS - above average film directed by Mark Robson, starring Ingrid Bergman, Curt Jergens and Robert Donat.  Set in a war-torn China and based on a true story.

CD:  FUNNY GIRL:  The Actors Fund Benefit Concert - uneven, but highly agreeable, with many, many Fannies. . .It sure is nice to hear that complete score.

Good morning, all.  I was awake at 3 am with an major anxiety attack and my stomach is still nauseous.  I then got up at 6:15, bathed, pulled the bedding from the MBarnum memorial air mattress and washed it and yesterday's clothing.  I did log on earlier, then went out for laundry, errands, and breakfast. I'm now debating taking my computer to Toyland for the nonce to get it out of the mess and to allow me to work uncluttered by the debris here.

So my plans this morning are to continue boxing books and setting them in the hallway.  I'm waiting to hear from one of my Toyland colleagues about bringing the computer down. If that works out, I'll call a car service and schlep things downtown.  This is no fun at all.

I can contribute nothing to the TOD, I'm afraid.  My life is not geared toward entertainment at the moment.  I do enjoy knowing what everyone else is up to.

I'm really fond of the casting:  a Swede playing a Brit, a German playing a Eurasian and a Brit playing a Chinese. (Bergman, Jergens and Donat - who btw, it quite good, too, in his last film role).

TOD:

Books:

Something From the Oven, by Laura Shapiro.  An interesting history of the 1950s, focusing on the intersection of commercially produced food and the common housewife's desire to put real food on the table for their families.  As a result of the collision, modern feminism came about.  Did you know that just eight days after Julia Child first appeared on Boston television as The French Chef, Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique was released to bookstores?  'Tis true!  And the two works are not as opposed to each other as everyone first guesses!

DVD:  I have cheated.  Having missed the latter half of Lost's third season, due to work scheduling and der Brucer wanting to watch too many other shows for me to get a viewing in edgewise (he will deny this, but it's the sad truth), I decided to try to catch up with the show before it returns to the tube.  Problem was, there were too many threads to catch up with, so I decided to try watching the series from the start, all over again.  Problem was, there wasn't enough time to watch the whole series from the start, before the show returns to the tube.  So I cheated and just watched the final three episodes of the third season.  Poor Charlie.  And where the Felix did Hurley get that VW Bus?

I finished HAWAII FIVE-O this morning. The last two-part episode did not guest star Helen Hayes (the publicity sheet with the set obviously listed guest stars from the entire show's run).

However, three very famous faces WERE in that last two-part episode: Don Chastain, Jock Mahoney, and, to my utter delight, Pernell Roberts playing a baseball star with a brain impaired son. An OK season-ender, though the chase story was dragged out too long. It could easily have been a one-hour episode.

I just got off the phone with the Miami University Theatre Dept.  Rather than tote a lot of the stuff I'm currently toting out of the apartment back into it, I think it's time to begin a bequest in my will, which is to leave my library to Miami University Theatre.  They definitely want the materials - scripts, books, programs, other memorabilia and ephemera, and sheet music - so it's a case now of determining what to send them and how to ship it, once I learn whether the University will ship it COD or reimburse me.  Oy, is this a mess!

TOD:
CD - All About Eve/Leave Her to Heaven Soundtrack Import

If I'm not mistaken, this "import" is basically a bootleg (in U.S. parlance).  Film Score Monthly issued this after having restored the scores.  Some European label has taken all the FSM recordings and repressed them -- cheaply -- for nearly PURE profit and ZERO investment on their part beyond production fees (very little $$$).  They get to sell them without ever having had to pay one dime of union reuse fees or composer royalties (although they CLAIM to pay "mechanicals").

It's apparently legal to do this in Europe.  But here in the U.S., it is not, and it's not legal to import protected items.

The title is still very much active in the Film Score Monthly catalogue maintained and sold by Screen Archives.

Of course, I do not expect anyone here to know about this other than BK....and it's perfectly understandable how such an item would make its way into unsuspecting U.S. hands since nothing is EVER done to prevent such things from happening unless the copyright holder takes legal action against the dealer, which is almost always more expensive an endeavor than the loss of revenue might be.

Off my soapbox.

They're great scores, aren't they, Jack!!!

I don't drool.  Much.

I'm listening to the complete soundtrack to the 1954 "Star is Born."  I've always liked Ray Heindhorf's arrangements and orchestrations and what he does with the orchestra (even when it's someone else's arrangements).  Considering  that most of the background music is based on "The Man That Got Away,"  you can see how brilliant he was (in my most humble but stubborn opinion).

BTW"  Continuing from yesterday,  I've always loved "To A Wild Rose," and "Forest Murmurs.
Robert Irving (more or less the Arthur  Fiedler of England) has the best recordings (again, in my humble yet stubborn opinion).  They do knock out versions of "Danny Boy" and "Santa Lucia."  We're talking orgasm here.

Max Steiner, Korngold, Newman, etc. would all have to be included as writing light classical music.

In my personal hard drive, this song has been going through my head all week (I blame, and praise, "Medium" for making it happen)

There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page

Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
Don't ever let them win

Something From the Oven, by Laura Shapiro.  An interesting history of the 1950s, focusing on the intersection of commercially produced food and the common housewife's desire to put real food on the table for their families.  As a result of the collision, modern feminism came about.  Did you know that just eight days after Julia Child first appeared on Boston television as The French Chef, Betty Furness' The Feminine Mystique was released to bookstores?  'Tis true!  And the two works are not as opposed to each other as everyone first guesses!

RE: LOST

It starts in 2 weeks (on thursday).

It looks like it will be 2 hours.

First a one hour new special at 8pm. Followed by a new episode at 9pm.

I think that first one hour episode might help remind us of what happened so far.

I wish they would show the last episode or two from last season. I'm not really sure why they don't. The show is so confusing.  Anyhow i guess that is probably why they are showing the special at 8pm.

I'll probably just re-read the televisionwithoutpity recaps to remind myself of everything that happened.

Friday morning (CST) greetings!  This week of role reversal has been quite refreshing for me.  Instead of getting up and leaving the house at the crack of dawn while DH Richard snoozes, I'm the one sleeping in while he's out of the apartment by 7:30 or so.  We have a TV that only gets a couple of stations (one of which is in Spanish), but we get the Milwaukee NBC affiliate, so I've been able to enjoy the Today Show while having my breakfast.  There's also a local morning talk show called The Morning Blend (http://www.themorningblend.com) that reminds me of the local programming we used to have in Detroit and Cincinnati.

Thanks for the anniversary wishes from DRs Edi, TCB, George, Laura, JRand, JMK, and Jose that I found when catching up on last night's posts.

After Evening Prayer and Richard's singing rehearsal with the choir scholars, we drove one of his classmates to the Milwaukee airport, where he was going to rent a car and meet his wife and daughter who were flying in from Florida (boy, are they in for a temperature shock!).  We got back to campus in time for the social that several classmates had arranged and the entire group sang us an anniversary song when we arrived.

Thanks, too, to all the DRs who acknowledged my 7000-post milestone.

As for the Topic of Yesterday...

The music of Leroy Anderson always bring a smile to my face.

In general, the label of "light classical" has always sort of confused me, since it seems that all composers seem to write both "light" and "heavy" pieces.  Then with the way record companies package and re-package Classical Music's Greatest Hits, "light" could be:

-a piece in a slow tempo
-anything written by Mozart
-almost anything from a ballet
-any music used in a movie
-any piece in a major ("happy") key
-etc., etc, etc.

I'm reminded of Duke Ellington's quote about music, in general: "There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind.”

I went home for lunch which is my usual behavior. We ate our chicken noodle soup with crackers. We each had a clementine and then Anthony went back to the craft project and I began to sort the laundry for this evening washing party.

The buzzer rang. It was Fed Ex. They had TWO packages. One we were expecting, our memory modules but there was a box, about the size of the box which wa delivered yesterday which contained our new, working, 160gig hard drive.

I signed for both the envelope and the box but was confused. I opened the envelope and it contained the memory and this time it's the right product. I didn't want to open the box but I looked at all my paperwork and none of the purchase orders matched what was written on the box. We weren't expecting anything else and knowing that when we called Gateway we would need to say what was in the box, I opened it. Yes, it is a SECOND 160gig hard drive. It's exactly the same as the drive delivered yesterday. I can't imagine what is going on at Gateway that they could be so disorganized. We now have to call Gateway AGAIN and get a return authorization and make sure that my credit card is not charged for 2 hard drives. We then have to go back to FedEx to set in motion the return of this package. Gateway is spending a fortune on returns. They pick up the cost of the FedEx return because it's their error. So far we have returned one 500gig hard drive and two memory modules (each in a separate package with separate charges). Now comes the 3rd package. This has entered a whole new realm of silly.

All I can say is, at least my computer works.

Oy!

DR Jeanne, it was this weekly cartoon where the main character, Winky Dink, would get into a jam toward the end, and the children at home could "save" him by placing their special "magic screen" over the television screen [you had to send away for the kit, see], and then tracing things which they would show you in crayon.  So for example, you could provide the boat that would take Winky Dink off the island, avoiding the alligators.

I'm just sure that a lot of kids followed the directions and traced in crayon on their television screen - without the special kit.  :)

elmore, when will you know if they are bug free ???

Most likely never.  I dn't think this problem will ever be over, only under control of some sort.  I keep saying the problem's from the building, but perhaps I brought them in on my bag from settng it down somewhere or from an item I bought second-hand.  There are too many possibilities and I feel all one can do is try to be as cautious and preventative as possible.

I am typing this from Toyland as I listen on my iTunes to selections from "Babes In Toyland."  I had to get it out of the mess because it's hard to accomplish any work in the apartment beyond dealing with the mess.  My colleague Curtis came in and helped me with the set-up and the new server, but now my email's a mess.

I began my afternoon viewing by rewatching the first hour of THUNDERBALL while I cooked and ate lunch. I was watching the Ultimate Edition remaster. It's clean as a whistle and the DTS sound is wonderful, but the color just isn't vibrant enough. I remember the Technicolor on this in the theater being very rich. This looks very nice, very contained, but just a bit on the drab side. I think the remaster on DR. NO has a richer look than the remaster on THUNDERBALL.

The Criterion discs finally arrived today (how ironic they arrived once I finally finished with HAWAII FIVE-O just this morning).

So, this afternoon, I watched THIS SPORTING LIFE. The film is brilliant in almost every respect. The flashback motif back and forth gives it a dynamism and urgency that's really engrossing (as if it could be anything else with those galvanizing central performances!).

Amazing that the director had never directed a feature film before, the producer had never produced a feature film before, and the screenwriter had never written a screenplay before, and they turned out this triumph!

DR Ginny - really enjoying reading about your retreat/vacation!  :)  Hope it is as relaxing for you as it sounds.

Yes, I'm having a good week.  I brought more books & magazines than I've had time to read and some DVDs that haven't even come out of my tote bag.  I've spent more time with the seminarians than I did in August and have gotten to know some of them better.  Everyone is pretty tired, including the prof, who gave them 30 minutes longer for lunch today.  In about an hour, I'll go over to the chapel for Evening Prayer and a solemn mass.  Richard is one of the choir scholars for the mass.

After lunch I went into town to one of my favorite shops.  My purchases included a little something for our niece/goddaughter, whose 19th birthday is today.  I came back here and got it ready to mail, then headed back to the post office.  From there, I went to another of my favorite shops.  It's beginning to snow, so I thought I'd get back here before the roads get slippery.

Topic of the Day:  I just finished listening to the original London cast recording of Parade, by Alfred Uhry and Jason Robert Brown.  It's, as far as I can tell, the whole show and the booklet has all the lyrics and dialogue.  It also contains a PAL-region 2 DVD of interviews with Alfred Uhry, Jason Robert Brown, director Rob Ashford and designer Christopher Gram.  It's quite informative, but only about 20 minutes long.

Also, I have BOTH studio recordings of the complete South Pacific with Paige O'Hara and Justino Diaz.  One recording has Pat Suzuki as Bloody Mary and the other (which is otherwise identical) has Shezwae Powell as Bloody Mary.  They were each less than half price, so I got both of them. ;)

Oy!

A couple of days ago, we (at the library service center) received a shipment from one of our major vendors.  The invoice had one title, five paperback copies ($6.99 list price per copy) and those five books were in the shipment and processed correctly...our barcode was on the front cover and our library name and address were stamped on the title page.  That's fine.  BUT also in the shipment were another three books.  All three were processed like the paperbacks, but we didn't order them and we weren't billed for them.  The books were "Consumer Sourcebook" and they're $400 each!!  And we got THREE copies of them!!  It isn't our mistake and we don't have to pay for them.  We're also not keeping them.  I called and the rep on the phone, when I told her that they were $400 EACH, sounded quite agitated.  But she said that she'll send a mailing label to return them.  This has certainly happened before, but NEVER with $400 books. :o

On the other hand, you've effectively dissuaded any HHW DR from dropping in unexpected and unannounced hoping to crash on your fire escape for a few days!

:D

 ;D

Long after our lice problem was cleared Bryan was not invited to a number of friend's houses, or were they permitted at ours.  His feelings were very hurt.  The parents of Craig's friend's were less worried & trusted me.  No one got lice from visiting our house.

Sorry, I meant when will it be safe to donate the books?

But what about Bryan?  Where does he stay on the "other side" of all his flights?

LOL.

In Chicago he stayed with a friend, and I presume will do so when he returns.  In NY he will stay with his girlfriend.  He also has a cousin there and two of his best friends.

BTW.  School tours and other activities for the day were done with other potential students.  Bryan said his age & experience definitely made a difference, all the younger applicants were very nervous while he was calm & confidant.  :)

While I was working one of the regular registers today, a customer came up to purchase this week's NEWSWEEK magazine.  On the cover is a pic of Hillary Clinton, with the quote "I found my own voice."

I looked at it, looked at him, and deadpanned "So, Bill was sitting on it?"

Best laugh I gave a customer all day.

I should get dinner on the table.  Nothing complicated, just pizza and a salad.

The pizza is one of those pre-made flatbread crusts, to which I'll be adding sauce, pepperoni, some diced ham, cheese, and veggies from the salad bar.  Salad bars are handy for this sort of thing - a lot of times I'll find customers using the bar for small amounts of veg to be used is a dish, where buying a lot of that veg wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Consumer tip of the day.

"to-do" in the sense that there was a lot of to-do going on?

Or simply a "to-do" checklist of things to accomplish?

I like the idea of the former (or I wouldn't have gratuitously posted, obviously).

In fact, I think there ought to be more to-do among our ken.

Yes, I know Cakelove quite well.  :)

I like their German Chocolate Cupcakes, but I actually don't like his German Chocolate Cake - well, New German Chocolate Cake - whatever he calls it.  There's something about the ratio of frosting to cake.  And the frosting is also tweaked a bit from the traditional recipe.

However, most of the other cupcakes.. :)  -But I do wish they didn't raise so prices so often.

*And I always have to remind and remember that since they sell a good portion of their baked goods out of refrigerated cases, you have to let them sit out for a while to come to room temperature to full enjoy their flavors.  The cold definitely mutes some of the non-sugar flavors.

cakelove (http://cakelove.com/#)

*And if anyone has seen the program "Sugar Rush" on The Food Network, the host, Warren Brown, is the founder of Cakelove, as well as the creator of all their goodies.

Of course this pic looks sort of like that onion foursome that TCB was talking about.   8)

Then, I put in disc 2 in the set. First up was a 2004 documentary made for Scottish TV on the life and work of Lindsay Anderson. Good information and interviews with Malcolm McDowell, Richard Harris, Brian Cox, Helen Mirren, Gavin Lambert, Martin Scorsese, and others. Well done and quite informative.

Next came Lindsay's first-ever film, a 1948 documentary on the production of conveyor belts called MEET THE PIONEERS! Not the most auspicious debut in screen history.

There was also an interview with Lois Smith (no, not the American actress) who produced MEET THE PIONEERS! with her then-husband. She and Lindsay went on to be best friends for the rest of his life.

There are at least two more items on disc 2. One is Anderson's last film, autobiographical in nature, but I didn't check to see how long it was going to be. Hopefully, I can get the set finished tomorrow.

I really need to begin those Agnes Varda films on Sunday.

Tonight's GHOST WHISPERER was another touching story and a nice showcase for David Conrad, at least for the first half of the episode.

As usual, I loved MOONLIGHT, a wonderful way to end this cycle of episodes. Really enjoyed the backstory on Coralene, too.

And PSYCH made me laugh out loud several times. Some good sight gags and always zippy dialog to keep things humming.

Nothing is finalized for Last Starfighter in Seattle (well, Issaquah, more specifically), but the folks at the theatre mentioned that they are trying for a rehearsal start date of April 22 through performances May 2-4.

Was that Matthew Morrison who made an appearance on tonight's NUMB3RS?  (Or as I now call him, Jose's picture-taking buddy Matthew Morrison.)

I did some cleaning today... Homework which included reading and some writing and doing research.

My freind Kat did stop over with a pizza and we had supper and a chat. I needed a freindly ear. It was quite good, it had chicken, bacon and artichokes . I have never had artichoke hearts before.

MissKaren, I am doing my first lit review...

I have several topics I am looking at and they are not limited to Soap Operas but I want to look at community building and fanculture related to that...

Cyberbullying.....

Disabilities and their access and use of the internet.....

Images and stereotypes ....

I am also interested in the historical context .....

But alas, I need to narrow my focus...

What KIND of concessions would be available at the Sex Workers Art Show Tour - one wonders.....

Well...the Washington Center concessions sold our regular stuff:  coffee, cookies, sodas, cashews, almonds, tea, and beer and wine.

However, the tour group sold books, calendars, t-shirts and pasties. :)

The Sex Workers Art Show was pretty good.  There were several strippers, one guy talked about his jury duty experience (very funny)...basically burlesque performances.  A good time was had by all.  We (the ushers and concessionaires) were told that the first act would be about 55 minutes (starting at 8:00 pm), then we'd have a 15 minute intermission, then a 55-60 minute second act.  HOWEVER, they didn't start until about 8:15, and the first act didn't end until 9:45!!  The show didn't end until 11:00!  That's not two hours!  But it was fun.  We did a lot of sales in concessions.  There were four of us working and we split the tips that we got...$9 each!  That's nice. :)
