Thank you for all the good vibes for DD Rachel. I'll pass them on. She's taking two weeks off from her summer job, coming to LA and getting lots of rest - which is about all you can do for Mono. The doctor told her not to play contact sports (to protect her spleen). As she wouldn't know a contact sport if she tripped over one, this is not a hard direction to follow.
Good night, all.
Jane - - Yes she's done with school for the year. Her lowest mark was A-. Not bad.

I do not like to cook for myself.

I like cooking for der Brucer and myself, but that is a totally different thing.

This last dinner, I was planning on doing something Chinese in style.  Der B. nixed that, wanting something warmer (it's been raining).

So I rummaged around the kitchen, and ended up:

Poaching a couple of chicken breasts and mushrooms in chicken stock.  When the breasts were cooked through, I added some corn starch to the broth, which made a wonderful gravy.

The gravy also went well over some StoveTop Stuffing Mix.  Yes, I used a prefabricated product!  Big deal.  I modified it some with fresh celery and onion, which I sweated in the butter called for by the mix.

This was all completed with a zucchini that I sauteed, with just a pinch of Chinese five-spice powder.  (I had to get my Chinese fix in there somewhere.)

That's what meals are like around our house: I figure out what will work together, and throw it.  Usually, it works.  If it doesn't, der Brucer tells me, and I don't try that again.

I got back from the Seattle Storm basketball game a couple of hours ago and the Storm won!  My niece (the real fan) will be happy with that, and with the pictures that I had to take for her (since she couldn't go).  Just had to share. :)

DR George, kudos on the new pic. It is extremely sharp on my monitor. I guess with others changing their pics, I need to take down the old camera and snap a more recent shot of me. I'll work on that this next week.

Thanks! :D You know those newspaper photographers have to be good!  I hope the newspaper where I got the photo doesn't mind me stealing it.  It is a picture of my very own self, after all!

Personally, I love preparing omelets.  Mostly, because it's really difficult to mess up.  Scramble some eggs, chop some stuff up, grate some cheese...or not.

I also adore preparing stir-fry.  Again, it's really easy.  And, just like the omelet, there ain't nothin' to it.

Oh, and chili.  That's simple, too.

Sense a pattern in there?  I enjoy cooking on autopilot.

I bought a used copy of the new cast album of Wonderful Town yesterday, and it's not very wonderful.  It's tinny, shrill, and has no ooomph! to it at all.  A totally half-assed job; but that's becoming commonplace in cast albums these days.

Fer chrissakes, where's the love?

DRGEORGE - yes nice NEW photo.

Hmmmmmmm....MRBK has a FULL day ahead of himself!  Rushing hither and yon.  I wonder if the other DR's are having such full Saturdays.  I myself am attending a 50th Wedding Anniversary thang for some friends of the family, then will be working the box office, then doing the closing and final and sold out performance of STATE FAIR, helping to strike the set, and then attending the closing night cast party and participating in said party's Talent Show!

I don't cook much either....hmmmmmmmm....I like to have a Spam Sandwich on white bread with Velveeta Cheese....if I have to be the one to make something myself, it is usually a sandwich of whatever is available, otherwise Mr Burger King does the honor!

DR RObin, I couldn't agree with you more about the new CD of WONDERFUL TOWN. I was totally underwhelmed by it. Not having seen the show and only having this as a barometer, I was thoroughly delighted the show did not carry off many Tonys this past Sunday.

Since I've been single quite a long time, it is second nature for me now to cook for just myself. I only eat out at most three days a week, so the other days are spent cooking for just me. I have to admit, though, after years of cooking for two, it did take awhile to learn to cook just for myself, and there are still dishes that I cook and have leftovers for the next day.

That includes my favorite thing to cook for me - fried chicken. I usually cook enough for two meals. I also really like my spaghetti and meat sauce which also goes for two meals.

When I was working, I really prized my Saturdays and liked to have them to just do nothing. Nowadays, as a retiree, the days seem to run into one another, and Saturday becomes no more special than any other day. I have to admit, though, that because of heavy shopping crowds, I do loathe to shop anywhere on Saturday. I try to do things like grocery shopping and quick trips to Wal-Mart in the early morning to beat the crowds and not have to wait in long lines at the check-out.

One of the things that helped Sean Penn in his Oscar quest this year was having another sterling performance in a different film being seen by Academy voters - 21 GRAMS. From some reviews that I read (I haven't seen either film yet though I will eventually see both), Penn's performance in 21 GRAMS is even stronger than in MYSTIC RIVER, but as MYSTIC was a big studio project and 21 GRAMS an independent film, his agents pushed for the nomination to be for MYSTIC RIVER. With two excellent performances in their heads when they marked their ballots, that might have swayed the vote toward Sean Penn.

After seeing Bill Murray's highly lauded (but fairly uninteresting, to me at least) work in LOST IN TRANSLATION, I am glad the vote didn't go his way.

LEST WE FORGET

Anne Frank, pictured in an undated photograph, would have turned 75 on Saturday, June 12, had she survived a Nazi concentration camp.

"She was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent," said her biographer, Lee. "I just can't believe she would have led an ordinary life."

All the above from a Newstory (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,122513,00.html) on a photo exhibition

I read THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL when I was in 9th grade, and it affected me deeply.

The Oscar winning documentary ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED gives a nice balance to the story and of course picks up the family's story after the Nazis find them. Not to be missed.

Good morning. Cooking for myself I find boring. I'm a pretty good cook who these days hardly ever cooks. My kitchen setup in the guest house is pretty pathetic. Can't use the oven really (the temperature is not marked in degrees, so you have to guess - go figure). So if it can't be microwaved or done on the stove, it's out. Plus, because this is such a small space, cooking anything that has a strong odor is out. Which rules out my beloved onions and garlic. And no fish, of course. I do scrambled eggs with whatever happens to be handy thrown in. Lots of canned soups. Microwave ready chicken tenders, that kind of thing. One day I'll have a real kitchen again and then I can post about various dishes till the cows come home (unless I cook them).

Thank you, DB. I've never believed in pushing for certain marks or getting angry if marks were low. I've always said to Rachel that how she does in school is no reflection on me. I'm judged by my successes and failures, not hers. The marks are HERS, the results, good or bad, are hers. What I've said to her from the time she was old enough to understand is that the only thing I want for her is that she have choices when she is out in the world. People who drop out of school or do really poorly have fewer choices as to what to do with their lives than those who don't. Of course there are exceptions - those with huge talent or luck. But for the most part, it's true. After hearing that again and again over the years, I think it sunk in. She decided that she wanted to do well for HERSELF. And she has, And I'm very proud of her. But what I'm proudest of is that she's an exceptionally good human being.

SWW-very good answer on STARGATE.  Robin, I don’t know if the series is better as it has been a long time since I’ve seen the movie.  Even you didn’t like the movie you may not like the series.  Do you like sci-fi?  I am a big fan of the series.  Sorry I didn’t answer your question yesterday.

Jason, nice pic of Times Square.  I have never seen the city after sunset.

Sandra, DearReaderLaura, beautiful shot of the peacock.  Oh, and cute turtle.

JRand thanks anyway.  As you saw I just had Keith convert the pic for me.  It did need to be smaller before I could post.

Have fun, MRBK.  Remember when you get to the reading:

Be seen, be heard; louder, faster, funnier; don't be a dead spot onstage...don't be a black hole that sucks all of the energy out of a scene; have fun - if you have fun, they'll have fun.

And all that other stuff!

Personally, I love preparing omelets.  Mostly, because it's really difficult to mess up.  Scramble some eggs, chop some stuff up, grate some cheese...or not.

Try adding sautéd chicken livers.

Or for a tad more elegance you could try the speciality of the chef of Norma's at the Le Parker Meridien in NYC:

The omelet, which debuted May 5 and is billed as the "Zillion Dollar Frittata"  (http://www.kron.com/Global/story.asp?S=1873189) has six eggs, a lobster and -- here's the kicker -- 10 ounces of sevruga caviar.

Dave Letterman had the chef prepare one for him for his show. When the chef arrived and grandly presented Dave with plate, Letterman casually picked up a bottle of Ketchup...well, you get the picture!

der Brucer (whose Mother would leave the table if he put ketchup on his plate along side sunny-side up fried eggs - now the ketchup was for the home fries - but, when one punctured the egg yolk with the wheat toast, the yolk would mix with the....well. you get the picture)

I hope the newspaper where I got the photo doesn't mind me stealing it.  It is a picture of my very own self, after all!

Mind! - in your neck of the woods it is you who have been the victim - the photographer has stolen your soul!

In an interview with Anne Makepeace   "Curtis Photography – Stealing Souls or Preserving Legacy?"  (http://www.wnet.org/americanmasters/curtis/photography_about.html) who did a PBS American Masterworks special on the photographer Edward Curtis, she reports:

In my early days of research for COMING TO LIGHT, I had read that Indian people did not like photography, that they believed that the camera captured a part of them, stealing their souls. I traveled to reservations all over the West to see what people really thought about Curtis' photographs. To my surprise, I saw family pictures covering the walls of every Indian home, and parents and kids shooting each other with video cameras. Clearly, if Indian people had once believed that the camera captured their souls, they had gotten over that. But then, was it different because they themselves were photographing each other? Were negative feelings towards photography that I had read really about the invasion of white photographers coming into their community and taking something that didn't belong to them?

What I found on Indian reservations was a tremendous variety of responses to Curtis' photographs. Most people loved seeing pictures of their ancestors. It was interesting that, when telling stories about them, they nearly always talked about their departed ancestors in the present tense as if they were still here, and referred to them as relatives, not ancestors. Some people did say that their grandparents had feared the camera, believing that a part of them remained in the photograph. When these pictures did come back to families and to the reservations where they were taken, through the efforts of tribal cultural preservation offices or of researchers, they have usually been welcomed as though the ancestors were coming home. However, in my travels, I found that some Indian people did not welcome them. One Blood Indian man threatened to confiscate the Curtis pictures I showed him, saying they should never have been taken, that the people in them should be allowed to go on into the other world, and that their souls should not be held captive in photographs.

Re:  Anne Frank.  Some synchronicity--Betsy and I just finished watching all the extras on the Diary DVD.  Then we went on IMdb to see WEHT Millie Perkins and were shocked--shocked--to see she had been in Wall Street.  Now we must rewatch that to see who she is (Mrs. Fox, whomever that might be).

I will be E&T probably for the next week as we are jetting to Orlando tomorrow, so any Hainsies/Kimlets who wish to send us good travel vibes would be doing me especially a favor.  I am not a calm flyer, and we will be most of the day tomorrow on several flights with two young children.  Pass the Prozac.

Good Afternoon!

I probably would have made it this Morning, but I had a weird awakening this morning around 6:00.  I heard a strange noise coming from the living room which is next to my room - and only separated by a set of pocket doors.  Well... my roomie had somehow gotten up in the middle of the night and plunked himself down on the couch... and he was snoring.  And I mean SNORING!  WOW?!?!?!  Well, after giving a good knock on the pocket doors, I could tell he re-shifted positions, and the snoring stopped.  So...  In any case, I'm still sort of groggy...

BUT it's gloriously sunny outside!, so...

For my Saturday plans, hmm...

The Xterra Games are in town...

There's a "reception" for the planned, new Arts Center downtown...

There's Carytown...

There's TV...

There's cleaning...  -well, maybe not cleaning...  Ah, well...

So...

As for the ToD:  Chilis, soups, sandwiches, etc.  Sometimes it's something simple, sometimes it's something complicated.  But I guess it's usually some sort of saute of whatever I have in the fridge and pantry.   Or it's just a few scoops of ice cream. ;)

-I actually got the kitchen clean enough where I can cook in it again, so...  Of course, they're ripping out part of the ceiling next week, etc... Ah, well...

OK - Time to hie myself...

As for what I like to cook for just myself.  Well I don't like to cook just for one.

One thing I have been obsessed with this week is pizza with chicken on top.  There was a pizza sale  for 3.83$ and I decided to try this new kind called parisienne (it is McCain's parisienne). It has chicken and spinach and cheese and sauce. And it's just the best thing I've tasted for that price. :)

Good morning all
I went to bed at 4 am last night.  Then the phone woke me at 8:30.  I see a nap in my near future.

I fully admit that I am not much of a cook.  I'm a big fan of things like take-out, cans o' soup, instant meals, and the like.  However, I do enjoy cooking some things when I have the time and the energy.
Eggs are standard fare for any meal.  I like 'em scrambled with a bit of cheddar, some soy sauce, and some onion salt.  Very yum.  I have George Foreman grill that I will often use to grill fish...usually salmon.  And lately I've been on a smoothie kick.  Fresh fruit, some vanilla yogurt, and a splash of milk.  My usual breakfast, also a post-workout drink.
As far as comfort food goes, there is one thing that I will make and have made since I was very young.  About the simplest meal you can get...salad macaroni with some chicken boullion cubes, boiled it up, and eat.  Don't know why I like it, but I do.

LOL.....sometimes I feel as though I were in prison...doing a musical, ya know.

Gotta Sing-Sing!

Just back from an exhausting trip to IKEA with a buddy of mine from work. I was horrified to find out when I got to the cash register that I had left both my credit card AND my debit card AT HOME!! I'm extremely blessed--my friend paid for my stuff, so I'll pay him on Monday. I was so embarrassed... I'm such a dunce sometimes. ::)

I'm now listening to the Original Broadway Cast Recording of TABOO. It's amazing how much better this plays on CD than it did on stage. I have always thought it was a very good score, and I'm glad to have the recording now. Though I'd like the two hours back that I spent in the Plymouth Theatre...

I don't cook. I don't have a kitchen, therefore I don't cook. When I did have a kitchen, I enjoyed preparing all of those typical bachelor/college-type foods. You know the kind--Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, Hamburger Helper, etc. I do love a good meatloaf (though that's tough to make for just one person), and spaghetti's always good, too. It's just hard to cook for one.

Except for Penny I believe my favorite meal, or variations of it, I cook for myself will bore everyone but I love it.  I like to toast basmati in olive oil then add the water along with saffron and salt.  While that cooks I steam vegetables.  Sometimes I steam them with tofu seasoned with garlic.  Even better, I buy marinated & seasoned tofu at the deli counter of a local market.  I toss the basmati and veggies along with the tofu, or black beans, or a mixture of beans, or scrambled eggs.  Last night I had scrambled eggs and added slices of an avocado and a special treat-a slice of toasted rye bread.  Best of all folks, this meal does is not fattening. :)

Yes, DRJANE, it is a mystery....I can't figure it out myself.  I am assuming it shows up as  jpeg file for you.  Why would it have more pixels or be bigger on your system than mine?  Maybe because I bought mine at Walmart!  LOL

"Hamuger" Helper isn't even allowed in the door any more.  I can do much better on my own.  Give me some burger, a can of tomatoes, and a decent pantry, and there's no telling what I can come up with!   ;D

Wait, that "no telling" bit doesn't sound so good.  Spoo!   :-\

I must be off to the nursing home.  I would pass today except Echo’s best buddy there isn’t feeling to well and we will be gone on our trip the next couple of Saturdays.  I need to get back early as my son is on his way home from Portland, just for the night.  He is bringing a friend and they are going to a wedding, about 45 minutes to an hour from here.  I just found out they have to leave at five in the morning to head back to Portland so he can get back to work to open the store tomorrow.  At least I will have a couple of hours with him this afternoon.  I also found out the wedding is so far out of town because the couple is going to take their vows while parachuting.

I saw BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE last night.  For those of you unfamiliar with this film (which has won awards at several film festivals) it is about Broadway from the mid-40s to the late-60s.  The filmaker interviewed over 100 people who worked on Broadway during that period (some who have since passed away) and mixed clips from the interviews with archieval footage.  You see Kim Stanley and Elaine Stritch in BYS STOP, John Raitt in CAROUSEL, home movies of Ann Miller. PAJAMA GAME and more.  Shirley MacLaine talks of taking over for Carol Haney; Gretchen Wyler tells the story of her getting her role in SILK STOCKINGS; Carol Burnett talks of her arrival in NY with very little money and checking into the only hotel she had heard of: The Algonquin.  There is so much more in the film (and a lot of extras already planned for the DVD from the 250 hours filmed including today's Broadway people talking about the stars of the past).  It's in NY now, opens in LA 7/2 and will spread out all over the country during the summer before the DVD.

The nice thing about cooking more than enough spaghetti sauce for one sitting is that the leftovers often taste better than it does fresh. I ADORE leftover spaghetti sauce on fresh pasta.

A lull.

I like to make lasagna, but I do it so seldomly (is that a real word??).  A few weeks ago I made some for my housemate and myself.  I wasn't able to get the kind of spaghetti sauce mix that I prefer, so it was a little bit off (a Maltby and Shire reference), but it was still good.  What I do is make the spaghetti sauce from the mix, use a basic recipe from either the package of noodles or container of ricotta cheese and I double everything except the noodles.  But even then, there are ususally some left over noodles.  But otherwise everything turns out.  Good stuff Maynard!

Mein Gott in Himmel...this is my six-hundreth post! Geez-o-man.

All this talk of Hamburger Helper and canned spaghetti sauce is making me extremely hungry. I like to use Prego 'Meat' flavored sauce and mix it with Prego 'Three Cheese' flavored sauce. It's yummy. And I always, always, always add about twice more meat than they recommend. I love a meaty meat sauce.

I just finished unpacking my purchases from IKEA. I re-framed four show posters in their new frames and put some 'new' ones in the old frames. Now I just have to finish hanging them. Ugh. It's not easy relocating four big picture frames in a small apartment in an attractive fashion.

I got a new frame today, too, that holds three 5x7 photos. I thought it held three 4x6 photos. I don't HAVE any 5x7 photos! So instead I framed some Playbills. I went with a color scheme--blue. It turned out quite well. I'll take a picture of it and post it later... The only problem...? The stupid glass broke! I couldn't get the hooks attached and while I was struggling with them, the stupid glass cracked right down the center. Luckily I only spent $10 on said frame, but still! Geez-o-man!

I haven't decided where I'm going to put the Blue Playbills...I'm running out of wall space!

I also managed to stuff both of the underbed storage containers that I got, and now I have one and a half empty tubs left that I can fill with junk! Woohoo! So little space...so much crap.

Saturdays are almost always movie days for Michael and myself.  Today, we saw both the remake of The Stepford Wives, which I definitely did not care for, and Saved!, which is darned close to being brilliant.

Later tonight, we're watching the two deeveedees we picked up today, The President's Analyst and The Day of the Locust.  I really liked both of these movies when I first saw them, but it's been many years since then, so whether or not they hold up is up in the air....

I second jane... Great posts, George.

Jason - If you got the broken picture frame at IKEA, I bet they'd exchange it for you. When something like that happens to me I always say, "Gee, I was just trying to put in the picture (pot the plant/wash the dish/ whatever) and it cracked. That's NOT supposed to happen." (blink, blink)
You might want to skip the blink-blink, but I bet the rest would work just fine for you. $10. is $10.

Panni...I don't have the time or the patience to go back to New Jersey and stand in line for hours at IKEA. It's too much of a hassle. I'm sure I could exchange it, but the fact is, I broke the dumb thing after I got it home...and I know that IKEA products are notoriously breakable. No big deal...just a little frustration.

Good Afternoon!

What a totally gorgeous, beautiful, sunny day it is here in Richmond!  I decided to go ahead and take a nice walk earlier, and boy did I walk!  I walked over to Maymont Park, and walked the various trails over there.  I also took pictures of some of the wildlife that is kept on the estate (Maymont also serves as sort of a nature preserve).  (I found a disposable black and white camera while I was putting things away and started putting it to god use.)  After walking around Maymont for about an hour, I headed over to Carytown for some window shopping - and some frozen yogurt (vanilla this time - what a concept?!?!).  So, about three hours of walking!  Felt soooo good to get out of the apartment for a while.  And it felt sooo good to get some sort of physical exercise after my period of sluggishness and slothness this week. ;)

-Oh, for good measure, I did have a very good steak and cheese sandwich (with mushrooms) for dinner from "The Eatery).  -Oh, and french fries too.

Now, I'm just geared up for an evening of "Trading Spaces"... And after "Trading Spaces", hmm... we'll see...

DR Jason - Glass is cheap.  Just take the frame to a glass/framing/craft shop in the neighborhood and have them cut a new piece for you.  Shouldn't cost more than a few dollars - oh, and then you could "splurge" on "glare-free" or something like that.

Omelet with Chicken Livers - Hmmm... I've read about such a thing, but I can't remember if I've ever had one - which I would love to have.  For some reason, I also remember an addition of heavy cream and/or sour cream and chives.  Hmm...

Back to TLC... - and Jason Cameron's triceps.   :P

When I was sick-sick a couple of weeks ago, Mono was another one of the possible diagnoses.  And it is still quite prevalent today - especially among college students.  It's very easy to pass from one person to another - not just by kissing.  Unfortunately, one of Mono's main symptoms is fatigue, and most colllege students are always fatigued from their studies and activities (and parties), so a lot of the time it goes undetected, undiagnosed and untreated.  It can go away on it's own, but it's better to get it treated ASAP.

"Mono" was and I guess certainly still is, part of the world of education here. It seems to only attack the loveliest and hard working students. Fortunately our students could apply for special consideration at exam times if their work had suffered during the academic year as a result.

I've had a few e-mails with an attachment from another DR, but I've just gone ahead and deleted them since there was no text in the message area - just a vague subject line and an attached file.

I scanned one of the earlier e-mails, and it's a result of an e-mail virus/trojan horse thingy where the virus sends out an e-mail to anyone in the infected person's address book.

Hmm.. Mono... E-mail viruses...

Panni, I had mono when I was about 20 years old. I had just moved into my first apartment in Salem and purchased a brand new car...thus I had NO money. I was living off of peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches and cigarettes and working very hard at Bi-Mart...got very ill...I got it bad, and that's not good! LOL?!

Anyway, my neck swelled up and my throat felt like it had been slashed with razor blades. Took a long time to feel better and the energy was depleted from my body for quite some time.

Just make sure you daughter gets lots of rest! She'll be fine. When she returns to her own home make sure she gets lots of rest and eats healthy...to avoid a recurrence.

Just finished GODZILLA VS MEGAGUIRUS. Not the best of the new crop of Godzilla movies, but it was entertaining. The new wave of Godzilla movies do a good job with the lead women's roles. They tend to be higher ups in the military or such and they don't make a big deal out of it. Treat it as if it were completely natural and not special or unusual.

And what I really enjoyed is that lovely Yuriko Hoshi from the 1964 GODZILLA VS THE THING has a major role in this film as a top scientist. And she has aged very nicely, too.

Actually a few of the old Godzilla movies had fairly decent female roles too...scientists, lead journalists, etc. Interesting I think.

Robin, I can't recall if you are a Godzilla fan or not. If so have you seen any of the newer Godzilla films (which they have released on DVD in original Japanese language)? I know JRand53 enjoys them a lot. I have been a Godzilla fan since I was a young-un.

Thanks, Bruce.  You already answered most of what I wanted to know.   I was just mainly curious as to when you enter the picture and what exactly you do.   I didn’t know if everything was already done and then you come in and put it together or if you were there first and had a hand in deciding what arrangement, how many instruments, etc.

Sounds like you’re a pretty “hands on” kind of guy.  I’m going to try to find what was already posted and then I may have some other questions for you.

Something I like to cook for myself.  Well, since there are only the two of us, I do cook for my Mom whatever I make  but here is something I really like.

Beef Roast

1 small beef roast (any kind)
1 small can cream of mushroom soup
1 can Coke Cola
1 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, sliced into slivers
1 can mushrooms (whole or sliced)
Salt & pepper to taste

Cut garlic into slivers and using a knife, put them in different parts of the beef roast.  Salt and pepper the beef roast to your taste.

Put roast into pan or roaster.

Slice onion and put over the roast.

Open the can of mushrooms and pour out the juice.  Put mushrooms over the roast.

In mixing bowl mix the can of mushroom soup and can of coke.  Pour mixture over the beef roast.

Bake/roast  350 degrees until done.

If using a larger roast, you can double everything.  Another trick I use is to peel 2 white potatoes and put them in the side of the roasting pan so they cook in the gravy.

I don’t list a type of beef roast because I’ve used this on all kinds and it always turns out GREAT!  The meat is always tender.

I was going to post the 2nd part of my SLC trip but I think this is enough for one night.  Glad that your enjoying it, Jrand.  I'm also glad you liked the photos.

Real estate prices in Los Angeles have gone insane. While out and about today, I saw an Open House sign at a new condo development in the hood (Studio City). It proclaimed on a handwritten poster that Only Two were left. I went in out of curiosity. The building is on a busy street (Whitsett), with a Garage that specializes in Emission Testing a few doors down. The condo I saw was really quite ugly - narrow, tiny kitchen, nothing elegantly finished. Three stories - small rooms - no outdoor areat at all (unless you count little balconies that face other buildings). Price: $535,000!

Der Brucer wants Salisbury steak for dinner tonight.  Great idea, but they really need mashed potatoes, and we don't have the right kind of taters for mashed, and he's busy watching television reruns.  Oh, what to do, what to do!

Ask him to go out and get some?

I had mono in my senior year of high school.  And it was a very bad case of it too.  At the time I was told I had non-contagious hepatitis as well, no longer called that.  I suggest having Rachel’s blood work re-checked, especially to check how her kidneys are fairing and watch them while she recovers.

Our son’s friend had a similar case of mono and it took him a long time, as for me, to recover.  Keith had mono a year after I did and was barely affected by it.

After the mono I became severely anemic, a common problem with young women.  I suggest having foods high in iron.  As you know Panni, it isn’t always the quantity of food that counts, but the quality.  Fresh fruits and vegetables are good.

But did you mention, Dear Reader Panni, that the median price of a home (that includes condos and fees simple) in Los Angeles County reached $394,000 in May?  For every house sold for less than $394,000, one was sold for more.  It's absurd!

We had a short, but sweet visit with our son.  It was nice to meet his friend we have heard much about.  They have decided not to return here after the wedding, a very wise decision.  Instead Keith located a decently priced hotel in Grants Pass for the night, saving them an hour drive tomorrow.  At five in the morning they will appreciate that.  I just hope our son can find coffee that early on a Sunday morning.

I also found out he was teasing me, the wedding does not take place in the sky. ;D

The wives of Stepford have a secret, Dear Readers.  The secret, as indicated by Dear Reader Robin earlier, is that their movie is not very good.

Seldom have my expectations for a movie been set so high by its trailer than in the case of The Stepford Wives.  I thought the trailer's montage--done in a slick advertising style--of classy men's accessories, concluding with a shot of a smiling Nicole Kidman, was absolutely brilliant.  For the record, none of the footage from the trailer--and none of its brilliance--appear in the film.

I have neither read Ira Levin's book nor seen the first movie version, so my judgment is based strictly on the film at hand (as any free-standing work of art should be judged.)  The parts of the movie that are supposed to be scary are not scary at all and most of the attempts at humor fall flat.  Yes, there are some good funny lines and set-ups in the film, and yes the performers do as well as they can, considering what they have to work with (or not) as far as the screenplay and direction are concerned.

It truly is a pity that all that money and all that amazing talent weren't put to use in a high quality and, you should forgive me, original project.

Speaking of my trip- We have decided to return earlier than expected.  Once the boys have both left us, after Bratislava, we shall return home instead of experiencing Vienna.   In order to do this change we had to give up our first class flights with our United Air miles.  Now we will travel the 18 hours in economy, oh well.  I am most disappointed about Vienna.  The reason we are coming home early is the same reason that caused the confusion between Bruce and Panni about our return date from L.A., Echo.

Echo, thanks to Keith’s sleuthing on the internet, has been diagnosed with Degenerative Myeolopthy.  The first symptom was her back right leg slid out behind her on the slippery floors.   Just before we left for LA the symptoms got worse.  Now her foot often drags along the floor.  We have lots of floors and little carpeting, so Keith has put area rugs all over the house.  I am diligent about walking or hiking with her at least an hour every day as exercise is the best thing we can do for her.  Keith has done research and has formulated a special diet along with numerous antioxidants and vitamins.   Stress aggravates the problem, therefore our concern about leaving her.  What we do now is extremely important in slowing down the progress of this disease which will eventually leave her backside, and maybe more, paralyzed.  What we don’t know is how long this will take as every dog is different.  It could take six months to two years.  The last two days we have noticed a decline, prompting the early return from our trip.

So for now, we are giving her the best quality of life possible while she can still enjoy herself.

Hope you guys try that recipe.  It really is good.  I got it from a lady a work and believe me the first time I tried to make it I kept thinking, "Coke?"  But if you think that you can use it clean the acid of battery terminals on your car, I guess it can make a roast pretty tender.

Wow, those condo prices are a "little "  (note the sarcasm ) high.  Got that kinda money in my shoe.  At least the price for a half way decent house in about $125,000 here in the Tampa area.

I've never had Mono and don't really know much about it so I can't make any comments except I hope it's gone soon.   :)

Speaking of Coke, I chanced across a documentary on Trio last night on the lame decision to retire the flavor of Coca-Cola and replace it with the New Coke and what a disaster it was. Very interesting how the new formula seemed so promising and then fizzled so fast. It took 77 days for the company to reintroduce Classic Coke after the launch of New Coke.

I remember drinking New Coke. It was sweet but seemed to me to lack carbonation. Anyway, I haven't had a regular Coke in years and years having switched to Diet Coke (and all other diet drinks) around 1989 or so.

I liked the opening titles of The Stepford Wives an awful lot, which got my hopes up.  But once the movie started, it went downhill fast.  Miss Bette Midler and Mr. Roger Bart nearly steal the movie, but even if they succeeded, the dregs of it all really aren't worth stealing.  Mr. Matthew Broderick just sits there like so much fish.  Nicole Kidman, never one of my favorite actresses, does nothing to change my mind.  And there's a surprise ending that's no surprise at all.  And the score, by Mr. David Arnold, is horrid.

On a lighter note, f sharp:

The President's Analyst, which we watched on deeveedee this fine evening, is one heckuva good movie.  It stars Mr. James Coburn, the epitome of 1960's cool.  It's a bit dated, since the setting is the cold war, and the drugged-out hippies in the movie don't help matters much, but the movie is quite often hilarious.  (And there's a cool inside joke: in the first scene of the movie, Mr. Godfrey Cambridge is sporting a t-shirt that reads Dizzy Gillespie for President, just after you see the credit line "Music by Lalo Schifrin".  And Mr. Schifrin's first professional gigs were courtesy of Dizzy Gillespie.)  Cambridge and Severn Darden, as rival spies playing a game of oneupsmanship, are very fine indeeed.  Both of the thick TV/video reference books I have give the movie four stars. I wouldn't go that far, but I think it's terrific.

The picture on the deeveedee seems a bit too dark at times (I'm sure the nimrod sites will praise its' "solid blacks"), but otherwise just fine.  There are no extras to speak of.  But for ten bucks or less, how the heck can I complain?

It's Jewish THIGHS on Broadway. I think Jewish THINGS on Broadway is about chorus boys, but I could be wrong...

Whoops!

Talking of things anyone ever see any of the Broadway Bares? I recently saw a clip with Christopher Seiber and his lover. All I can saw is WOW!

Also went on AOL and their Entertainment news reads: Ray Charles & J.Lo's secret wedding top the week's headlines

Wow.  Bigger than President Reagan's demise and week-long wake and funeral?  Bigger than the steps taken this week toward Iraq's self-governance?

I am ever so glad the media keep things in perspective these days.

Welcome back, Michael Shayne.
Can't answer your Reagan question as I don't think I had the TV on until very late that night (after 11).

Talking of Miss Stritch: Saw the DA Pennebaker documentary on her and the creation of her show. Since I saw the show live in NYC and have the DVD of the complete show. I thought there was too much on stage stuff and not enough backstage stuff  about the creation or about what makes Miss Stritch tick off stage.

I totally agree. It's as if the Docu couldn't quite make up its mind as to what it wanted to be. And they certainly must have had more than enough material. They were shooting from the time rehearsals started.

Jenny and Michael Shayne, glad to see you both back!! We missed you guys!

Jane, I am glad that you have diagnosed Echo's disease, it should make things better as far as helping her...but I am sad that she is ill in the first place.  :-\

I'm a one-woman posting frenzy again. To those who objected to my previous remark re my visage, thanks, flattery will get you everywhere, but I'm still sick of my face.
Before said face disappears for a bit, I just want to remark on the choice posts ce soir. Very funny and ever so clever and witty and bright -- as befits the best site on the whole fershluganah Internet.

Oh yes also watched Spy Kids 3D movie. Interesting 3D but that's about it. Doesn't anyone remember the movie TRON? I still think that movie was ahead of its time in terms of special effects and concept.
That's why no one remembers it: it was too far ahead of it's time!

Sorry, not exactly true.  As I recall, it's had at least one DVD Special Edition released, but I haven't revisited the film since it's LD version, with extras.  Some of the effects were good, but there was a lot of ground to cover before computer animation became audience-friendly.  (Not to mention the story being terribly weak.)

Back to Stargate (the movie) VS Stargate: SG-1 (the television series), and their differences:

The best comparison I can come up with is the differences between the M*A*S*H film and series.  They end up being two very different entities, because of the differences between a film and a continuing series.

With Stargate: SG-1, the differences start with the casting of Richard Dean Anderson as Colonel Jack O'Neil, over Kurt Russell in the same role.  For one thing, Anderson is taller.  This always works well for television, I don't know why.  Also, Russell played the role as a military jerk.  Anderson is more laid-back, more inviting to the audience, and his sense of humor comes through in the character.

Second, the supporting characters are better.  Michael Shanks is more compassionate than James Spader in the techno-nerd role.  Add Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Don S. Davis as the Brilliant Woman in Uniform, the Alien Who Has Joined Our Side, and the Gruff Commanding Officer With a Heart of Gold (respectively), and you've got a very good cast to work with.

The filming location works to the show's advantage, as well.  Switching from the very expensive Mojave Desert to the wilderness surrounding Vancouver, BC, has paid off, both financially and in terms of setting.

Finally, having on-going storylines and relationships has given the series a lot to work with.  There's the original bad guys, but there's other villians and allies to deal with, all with their own backstories.  Some of it can take a lot of sorting out, if you're just joining into the show.  But it's worth the effort.

I've just read a wonderfully filthy letter by Terry Southern that I can't reprint on a family site. It was quoted in Salon in a review of the new book, THE CANDYMEN. The article the quote is in (I forgot to note the writer's name - mea culpa)  is quite interesting, basically saying that today we are living in a Terry Southern fantasy of America, sadly come true:
"In its crassness, its lust for celebrity, its pornographication, in
the willed yahooism of its politics, America has seemed, for some time now, to be operating according to a Terry Southern scenario. For the last 30 years or so, he has been the Edgar Bergen of the American zeitgeist. I wish there had been more Terry Southern books, but his voice is a constant. For me there is no other writer whose voice is more present in American public life, whose distant cackle can be detected in the (often overlapping) lingo of showbiz and advertising and corporations and politics."

I'm back, and to prove it, I'm here.  What a long day - you can read the details in tomorrow's notes.  I just read all of today's excellent postings - thanks to all who kept the home fries burning.  Now I must write the notes, and then I'll be back to make up for lost time.  I thought I'd wear some rouge, lip gloss and a bit of eye liner - lost time really likes me when I'm made up like that.

Here's why I love this here site.  Let me be the first to share an e-mail I received here today with incredibly great news:

Hi Bruce,

My name is Jim.  My sister and I have purchased the rights to flicks, and are going to be re-introducing them to the market this fall.  If you and fellow flicks lovers could help us by requesting them at movie theaters and stores, it would help us get Flicks launched again.

Best Wishes,

Jim Tjerrild
Flicks Candy Company

Do we not have just about the best site on all the Internet.  You heard it here first, dear readers - FLICKS is back!  For any movie buff, this is fantastic news.

I started to watch THE STRANGE LOVE OF MARTHA IVERS on TCM, but was too tired to stick with it. I'm taping it. But what I saw was terrific. Very DRAMATIC Miklos Rozsa score! Gorgeous rainy beginning. And the first ten minute really grabs you. (Okay, I know I stopped watching - but it still grabbed me - my eyes were tired.) ....Ooops (Spoo) - Almost midnight. Must stop posting.
