I have long been fascinated by the Lorenz Hart version for "On Your Toes":
Remember the youth mid snow and ice
Who bore the banner with the strange device
Excelsior!
I had no idea it was beginning of a Longfellow poem:
A youth, who bore, 'mid snow and ice,
A banner with the strange device,
Excelsior!
I think Hart only rewrote that so he could rhyme Excelsior with "... in Chelsea or ..."
