Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of folding chairs, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're out buying their own folding chairs, just for the hell of it.

D.A. Pennabaker director of the documentary of the Company cast album will be receiving a honorary Academy Award this year.
Hal Needham will also be receiving a honory AA, his second Academy Award, for his contribution to film. I don't know if its for his fine directorial work in such film classics as Stoker Ace, Megaforce, Canonball Run (I & II), Deathcar On the Freeway and Body Slam but congratulations on your honor.
-
The Academy Award for Art Direction will now known as Production Design Award.
They have also changed the rules how songs will be nominated. The five songs to receive the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.
I guess this was needed after the old system only had two songs qualify last year

That is correct. It was change after Dreamgirls and Enchanted both received three nominations in the song category and failed to win.

Morning all.
That is all.

Good morning all.
I was going to post last night but I had a doctor appointment and didn't get home until after eight then I had one of my tired attacks just as I was reading the board and had to go to bed.
I will read the posts tonight.
I will be sending Angies List an email but I don't think anything is going to happen.
I loved the photos I did see last night.
Vibes to all who need them.
Have a wonder filled day.

Good morning, all! I stayed up late to hear Bill Clinton, and I am so glad that I did. I do know that by around noon I'll be feeling the effects of not enough sleep, but I will hopefully be on my way back home from Toyland by then.
When I got to Toyland yesterday, there was a message from my accountant next door asking me to turn down the stereo, so I spent 2-3 hours yesterday rearranging my office furniture. I didn't have an AC-DC adaptor in the office, so I won't know until today if I achieved something god or screwed up the situation until Curtis returns on Sept 20. Hopefully, we will have solved the sound problem for everyone's satisfaction.
So, I've got that to deal withm and some more proofng on the blasted "Willie the Weeper," which is endless. I'm about halfway through the piece now.
And that's my news. More coffee!

Good morning, all.
Coffee. Lovely coffee.

We were your typical 1950s board game family, but I've forgotten many of them. "Sorry" and "Chutes and Ladders" always come immediately to mind. Eventually, Scrabble and Monopoly (which we probably never played strictly according to the rules, though I'm not sure now why I say that but I've heard others make the same disclaimer).
Lots of Checkers, Chinese Checkers and eventually Chess (just me and my dad) -- for which I've always maintained a tinge of regret that I never worked to become really good at it.
Card games: "Rummy" (which we never called "Gin Rummy" or "Gin" for whatever reason) and Hearts. Later, in my early teen years, my parents were introduced to Pinochle which was popular in their church group, and we all played that pretty solidly for a few years. I think my grandmother taught me Solitaire -- again, not according to strict rules.

So, here's a photo of David consulting with the cello section. Our principal cellist, Gerald Peregrine, is the nephew of the late great Irish tenor Frank Patterson. Frank and I worked together on his St Patricks Day events at Radio City in the 1980s and 90s. A lovely man. I was hoping I'd see Frank's widow Eily in Dublin, but I tld Gerald to send her my love.

When I was a kid, I loved Masterpiece, a board game with paintings from the Art Institute of Chicago. Taught me a bit about the styles of painters and introduced me to a few that I still love.

Lately, it's been pinochle when I find the time to get together with friends.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Scrabble, Monopoly and Parcheesi were the usual board games of choice in the Simbulan household.
As for card games: Old Maid, War, Spit, Crazy Eights. When I was in college, I learned to play Bridge with some theatre friends, and actually became quite good. However, it's been years since I've played a hand.

Oh...
And my brothers and I would usually end up convincing our parents to buy us the latest and greatest and coolest board game. Usually they involved moving pieces and/or magnets and natural disasters or tragic events: The Titanic, Typhoon, Bermuda Triangle, etc.

The earliest card game I remember is a game called Authors, which was a variation of fish. I play solitaire on the computer all the time. During the summer, our family used to play Canasta, though I've forgotten how to play it.
Probably the earliest board game I ever played was Candyland. The one I play most often today is Scrabble. I still like Trivial Pursuit but all the various earlier editions and variations. I imagine they now have editions with questions about Justin Bieber and such ilk, that I would no doubt be terrible at. Another game I like is Wise and Otherwise, which is a board game variation of the old Dictionary game, in which everyone writes the second half of a wise saying and folks have to guess which is the real one. I also like Yahtzee and Boggle (which I play as a solitaire game). There was a period where I played some war simulation games like Gettysburg and Kingmaker, which was about the War of the Roses.

As a kid we most often played Monopoly, Chinese Checkers, Battleship, Aggravation and Parchesi...we being myself and my cousins. I don't recall my parents ever playing board games.
I enjoy card games but I am absolutely terrible at remembering the rules.
Whenever my little grand-nephew Cole visits he insists on playing the Gumby 3-D board game. Actually he just likes setting it up...lots of cardboard buildings, trees, forts, etc.

On a related note, when I was at the gym Tuesday there were two guys playing Checkers in the steam room.

When Rob was going through stuff in his old room over the weekend, he took his Monopoly, Battleship, and Chess and Mary Linda said, "Oh, we can use those with our friends!"
As for cards, one of my fondest pre-college memories is playing cards on the screened porch that my dad and brother-in-law built onto our house in Detroit. The house was not air conditioned, so my parents and I would sit up at night until our bedrooms were cool enough for sleeping. Our game of choice was a rummy called Liverpool. My grandmother and I played endless games of Canasta and, when I was in college, my parents taught me a game called Spite 'n' Malice.
Being married for almost 32 years to someone who's not a card-player, I've forgotten the ins and outs of those games. I do now enjoy playing Words with Friends (scrabble) on my phone with friends all over the country and I just made the mistake of installing a Solitaire app. Might have to remove that one - it's too addictive and drains the battery!

The speech / forensics geek in me watched speeches from both convention and I have to agree with you about Bill Clinton. HE addressed the issues and talked to the audience. I like that. From the ideals of persuasive speaking he used the tools that a good persuade speech would have and they are clearly stating the case, presenting the facts, and giving reasons supporting his position.
I have judged collegiate speech tournaments for a number of years and usually get assigned to the Dramatic interp events which I love. I do have to say being on this board has made me a better judge because of information and tips that various individuals have presented.
Aside from watching the speeches, i refuse to watch the political ads as they are too negative. I have been revisiting old tapes, CDs, books and DVDs until the election is over. It has been a riot watching a few of the shows as some tapes still have commercials.

Like olive oil, avocados have a fat in them that actually causes one to lose weight. That's why Weight Watchers has added a daily dose of olive oil and a recommended amount of avocados to their plan.

I love the Watten playing cards. My Russian grandfather taught me a game with those when I was a kid. I don't remember exactly what it was. Maybe my mom does.

And thank you all for the vibes. Nothing is settled yet and I'm borderline apoplectic. Just trying to stay calm and say prayers.

I hope you don't have to quit the program, John.

I am sort of shocked that nobody around here had this game:

I'll just sit quietly here and wait for a certain orchestrators response to this.....
There is no need to wait for an autopsy: all tests have successfully proven that Michael Barnum is indeed a 12 year-old girl.
Damn! I guess that makes me a pedophile.
-
I couldn't get tickets for the Olympics but I was able to get to the Olympic Stadium today to see the Paralympics. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a wonderful experience to be there.....and I'm not even interested in sport!
I think it is cool that you were able to go. It is an interesting stadium. I have seen a little of the paralympics on the Canadian and BBC feeds. Nearly nothing about them in the games in the
US media.
There's been a lot of criticism here about how the US media is largely ignoring the Paralympics.

My sisters played that. The dream was the dud, though, in their opinion.
They usually are, DR John G, they usually are!
;D

Oh!
My brother, Michael, just found out that he has been promoted to the rank of Commander (CDR) in the United States Coast Guard! And along with his promotion, he will now be stationed back at USCG HQ in DC on a more permanent basis. No more extended weekends away from his family. :)
Wonderful news!!!

Back from the Costco run and some lunch at the Daily Grill. I had their under 600 calorie turkey club with avocado sandwich, which was incredibly great - how it can be under 600 calories and have avocado is anyone's guess, but it was filling and really tasty.
We are also back from a Costco run.

And, this is Teddy Tahu Rhodes

Teddy isn't only a good singer but a very good actor. He spends a lot of time onstage dressed in very little.
He's one of the leading subjects on the Barihunks site.
-
I held a hope at one point that our Mikey would develop an interest in classical music from the Barihunks site but i think he'd rather play Mystery Date and giggle over potential byfriends.
-
And...
I'm back from having some Happy Hour food with some of THE KING & I cast! I texted one of them earlier, and it turned out they were in the restaurant downstairs!
And, hopefully, I'll be able to see the show tomorrow night.
-

I think that would be spelled bi-friends.

That does pretty much describe my Saturday nights.
-
I am off to rehearse Act Three...we open ONE WEEK from tonight!
But are you funny yet???
-
I wish that the clip from SOUTH PACIFIC that is at Barihunks would have allowed us to watch Teddy sing "Some Enchanted Evening" instead of jumping back and forth between Emily and Cable.
-
It seems like a game called "Go Fish" would be especially appropriate in these parts.

To me it says a lot as I am nearly deaf.... I posted on facebook an article about an inspiring American paralympian who is a sprinter in addition to a scholar and scientist. I was impressed. Sadly there was nothing about him and his story on any of the us OUtlets.
Here is the story that appeared on the BBC website..

My first board game would have been Monopoly for sure, but also this wonderful baseball board game (I talk about it in Benjamin Kritzer, I think).

That is correct. The U.S. news media has ignored the games completely.

Good grief! Who's Afraid of Virginia Bacon?

I am obsessed with a game on my kindle called Every Word.
I fondly remember playing lots of games with my grandmother and her friends. Lots of card games. But also there was something called rummy something, which we played a lot.
These days i play a lot of kids games.
Clue Junior. Princess Yahtzee. Old Maid. Crazy 8s. Go Fish.
-
I love avocados.
-
I definitely remember playing Candyland and chutes and ladders.

Congratulations to DR Jose's brother, Cdr. Michael!

Richard and I worked out at the Y and then went to Olive Garden for dinner - my sister's treat. She sent me a couple of gift cards as "thanks for looking after Mom."

That is very nice of your sister.

Now I'm home wearing out the PREV button on our TV remote. I'm watching the Democratic National Convention on C-Span and the Cincinnati/Pittsburgh game on ESPN. The Bearcats' newest season ticket holders are there - that's what we gave Rob and Mary Linda for their first (paper) anniversary.

Yes, it is, DR Jane. She sent one for Olive Garden and one for Bob Evans, which we'll use sometime when we want to go out to breakfast. The cards came last week, the day after my frustrating shopping day with Mom. Nancy's timing couldn't have been better.

Sausage Gravy and Biscuits, with Hash Browns!!
-
Closest Bob Evans to here is probably still someplace in PA. I always go there at least once when I'm in Cincinnati.

No sausage gravy for me, DR ChasSmith! I got sick from it on the last day of our honeymoon almost 32 years ago and haven't eaten it since.

-
And thank you all for the vibes. Nothing is settled yet and I'm borderline apoplectic. Just trying to stay calm and say prayers.

Ditto!!!!!

I send a hug to Danise...

Hugs right back at ya!!!!

I forgot--The Game of Life. I loved that game.

Love all the photos DR Elmore!!!!!
-
What a fun day! The Monarch Scientist and I spent the day tagging monarchs up north. Then we drove through a haboob coming home. Will catch up in a bit.
-
Sounds like quite an adventure, DR Laura!
-
It sure does.

On our way to Costco we stopped at Best Buy. As usual we received excellent customer service. I looked at the Barnes and Noble e-reader. I don't care for the way the pages turn and think I wouldn't get used to it. I asked Keith to compare it to the Nook and he had the same issue, not that the page turner on the Nook is great like on Keith's iPad.
I then looked at the Nook tablet. On the whole, except that I prefer the size of the e-reader, I prefer the tablet. Still I wasn't overwhelmed.
The salesman then suggested I look at the Samsung tablet and I must agree I liked it.
Had I not inherited the Nook from Keith I would likely just have gotten an e-reader which has the BIG advantage of a long battery life for long flights & travel. The disadvantage is I have now gotten used to having an internet connection.
I came home to find news regarding the new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader & the new Kindle Fire HD.
I think I shall wait & research more before making a decision.
-
'night
-
Well, I'm off. I need to get gas at Costco and then I'll go home and see if all the Mack Sennett, Mabel Normand, etc., silent shorts on TCM recorded.
Until later. :)
-
Good Evening!
And... I will be seeing THE KING & I and Baayork tomorrow night! Yeah!!!!
-Victoria Mallory is playing "Anna".
-
Rehearsal was really fun, and then some of us went to eat - I had a very healthy salad with a teeny bit of oil and a lot of vinegar, so not more than two or three hundred calories tops.
-
And...
I had been wanting to try out "Top Chef" Richard Blais' new restaurant, The Spence, and since it's just a mile from my hotel, I went ahead and biked over...
I had tweeted @RichardBlais earlier today, and he greeted me shortly after I was seated. I asked him about the menu, and he said that most of the items were small plates, three or four would make a nice meal. So...
-Parker House Rolls & Whipped Coconut Butter
-Oysters & Pearls
-Canned Soup of Watermelon Gazpacho
-Buffalo Fried Sweetbreads
-Bone Marrow, Tuna Tartare & Fried Quail Eggs
-Sugar Donuts, Coffee Glaze & Palm Sugar Ice Cream - Which was an "off the menu" special
-Maldito's Crutch (American Gin, Ginger, Angostura, Lillet Blanc, Mint)
-Latte
In a word: YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!
*I posted some pics on my Facebook Wall. Alas, since I only have my iPad with me, I can't really share or post them here on HHW.
-
Benjamin Kritzer reviews are up, and ready for people to LIKE. :)
(Not for my sake, just for however it can benefit the books and author!)

DR John G - And, yes, that makes the third time this week I've had bone marrow. ;)

Goodnight.

Very broadly regional -- Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast -- I'm posting this without looking it up. It originated in Ohio, though.

I shall now go read Chas's reviews. Finished with my viewing.

Beautiful and very touching reviews for the Kritzer trilogy by dear reader ChasSmith - I encourage everyone to read them.

Well, I'm happy to report that the silent shorts (and some not-so-shorts) have all recorded, or are currently being recorded. There are about six-and-a-half hours of Mack Sennett Keystone comedies. :) It turns out that for this whole month,TCM honors the 100th anniversary of the founding of Mack sennatt's Keystone Studios.
