Anton Walbrook!!!!

I finally tracked down an affordable copy of the GASLIGHT Dvd that includes the 1940 English version of Gaslight with Walbrook and Diana Wynard....  Diana isn't so hot....but Anton is very watchable as the villain of the piece.

:)

I much prefer the British version to the U.S. one.   I don't know why, other than I cannot abide Charles Boyer!  That last bit came as a bit of a shock to me earlier this year when I saw, for the first time in my life, "Back Street".   There was no reason I could imagine for poor Margaret Sullivan to subject herself to that doltish boor.  Ditto Joan Fontaine in "The Constant Nymph" (also seen this year for the first time).  I loved the movie but found Boyer totally unworthy of the adoration of either Fontaine or Alexis Smith.

I guess I'm just fickle.

Diana Wynyard is wonderful (IMO) in "Cavalcade".  Her Bella in "Gaslight", for me, is very watchable, but she doesn't quite measure up to Ingrid Bergman's performance.  I think the reason is that Wynyard approaches the character as a shy, mousy type given to overdramatic hysterics.  Bergman could never be mistaken for shy or mousy in "Gaslight", but she takes a demure approach and her breakdowns are more psychologically complex.

I didn't realise the DVD had been discontinued. I saw the play once - Patrick Hamilton is one of my favorite authors (Hangover Square is brilliant). I like both versions of the film although, of course, the Anton Walbrook version is closer to the play.

FRIDAY indeed!

Home tomorrow, with MUCH I will ketchup on.

For now, it will be great to see BK this evening and the little Twilight Time session will be a welcome calm ending to a hectic week.

Exactly......I like Walbrook over Boyer by a mile and of course...Lansbury.....but Bergman certainly deserved her Oscar for her "Paula".....which I think is an improvement as a name over Bella.

I orderd the Region 1 dvd available now and it did NOT contain any extras....so I sent it back....and found a USED copy on EBAY for about $12.  The same is going on Amazon.us at over $40!!

I went ahead and sent in my letter to direct Angel Street this July....we shall see what happens.  I almost didn't do it....but I certainly don't want it to be messed up....and if I miss my chance to be in THE DROWSY CHAPERONE....well, that's life!

I think BK will finally be meeting former DR MattH who is a reviewer with Home Theater Forum.

Oh, I don't feel bad, DR John G, but thanks for the wish.  What I need most is a walk, which I think I'll do in the basement today instead of venturing out to the Y in the rain.

MBarnum, the Indian food at lunch let me to watch Monsoon Wedding again last night. Great movie. Definitely not Bollywood, more like a Punjabi Robert Altman.

For some reason I just couldn't get into Monsoon Wedding. I might have to give it another try one day.

I am eager to see THE LIFE OF PI, which has a cast of Bollywood actors in it, although I think (?) it is a British film.

TOD:

DVR:
Last night's THE OFFICE

DVD:
Jeff Richards and a very, very young Richard Chamberlain (4th billed) in THE SECRET OF THE PURPLE REEF.

I tell you, Jeff Richards is so dreamy. I might have to watch him in ISLAND OF THE LOST WOMEN afterwards.

I think it might be because it's not a Bollywood movie. You may want it to be something it's not. Or that Altman style of interweaving stories could turn you off.

I was going to run out and get my new laptop over lunch, but it's raining so hard that I figure I can wait. And if not today, then tomorrow.

From DR Matthew:
Quote
Rice is easy to cook, 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water.  Bring to a boil, stirring so it doesn't stick, then cover and let simmer for 15 minutes or until it's the consistency you want it.

Wild rice needs more liquid and cooks much, much longer.
