Well, you've read the notes, you are now down to brass tacks, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently getting down to brass tacks and they don't even know what the HELL that means.

Happy Birthday DR Francois.

DR Danise, I just read your post. Many vibes to you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am also not surprised that you were upset that you were not awake when your mother finally passed. But if you think about it logically, you were there and you did all that you could do. You could not stay awake 24/7 and you were there laying beside her when she went.
You have been totally devoted to her for years. So don't feel bad. Plus you were there. You were right beside her. It's not like there is anything else you could have done.
Please take care of yourself.

MR BK calls them "playoffs" - I have heard them called this as well. I have also seen them in scores marked as "tags."
Congrats to DR RLP on 12,000 posts!
And thanks to DR RLP and DR MATTH for their musings on Frances Farmer in SON OF FURY. Yes it was thankless, two-faced role.... the saddest thing for me is that it could have lead to a whole revived career in second lead and "character" parts for her, had she so decided to go that way.
Preston Sturges wanted her for a role in TAKE A LETTER, DARLING - a very funny role eventually played by Constance Moore, when Paramount couldn't even get Frances to the studio for costume fittings and tests.

Barbara Stanwyck acting trick to watch for....
I have noticed that EVERY TIME Barbara is doing a speech that is going to be interrupted by the other actor, she begins talking and then looks down, so that we she is interrupted, she can look up and react.

The Arts-Illiana Council of the Wabash Valley has just announced that Putnam County Playhouse has been given its award this year for Volunteer Service.
:)
It pays to keep those restrooms clean, I guess!
-
Is this the Putnam County reference in the title of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee?
-
As a gimmick, they should release the rights to the Spelling Bee musical first to theaters with Putnam in their names.
-
What would TCB say about those references to a clean john?
(And what is going on with my mind this A.M.? Must be all that innuendo in COLOR PURPLE last night!)
-
As a gimmick, they should release the rights to the Spelling Bee musical first to theaters with Putnam in their names.
Scary.....although it is a natural of course.... ;D
-
Those here at HHW will be happy to know that, despite her split with singer John Mayer, actress Jessica Simpson is "very happy."
-
There were some interesting splits in the choreography of COLOR PURPLE. Some cartwheels and flips as well.
-
There were some interesting splits in the choreography of COLOR PURPLE. Some cartwheels and flips as well.
Sounds like Putnam County Playhouse choreography to be sure. ;D
-
No "innuendo" in Spelling Bee, though - just some frank way-out-there sexual talk.
-
Come to think of it, COLOR PURPLE is also pretty frank and out there with its sexual situations, only for the most part it's quite serious.
-
It felt like a "happening" being at the performance right after Fantasia had been annointed a spectacular new Broadway star. Much more suited to the role than La Chanze was, although La Chanze's performance was tremendous. But the glories of Fantasia's performance are its subtleties in character development, not particularly the expected vocal aspects - if you're going mainly for Fantasia's performance, I'd recommend sitting close, so if you have the choice between close on the side and further back in the center, I'd recommend close on the side. Especially the audience right side, where she seems to have her best moments.

No "innuendo" in Spelling Bee, though - just some frank way-out-there sexual talk.
We don't even allow that BACKSTAGE at PCPH!! ;D
DR EDISAURUS - thank you for sharing your kitty story last night. :'(

Now I really am off to work. Really I am.
-
Lots of important staging going on in Color Purple in those side pockets of the stage - odd idea, distances the people on the other side, I'd imagine.

Bring back some wisdom for me, Jrand.

Saturday morning greetings! A full day of information-waitressing's in store for me.

Yes, I've always hear them called "playoffs" as well.

I really love Barbara Stanwyck (less enamored of Gary Cooper).
I supposed the film of hers that I've seen the most and love is SORRY WRONG NUMBER.
DOUBLE INDEMNITY must be included.
But there's another Stanwyck movie that I adore and haven't seen for years - ALL I DESIRE. It's more of a B-picture from the 1950s, but she's just mesmerizing in it. Trapped in this hokey melodrama, and she acts it like it was the grandest screenplay ever written.
-
Bon Anniversaire, Francois! And many more!
May it be a Mad Hatter Tea Party kind of day for you -- whimsical, nonsensical, entertaining and most wild!

I have last night's LAW & ORDER and Thursday night's SUPERNATURAL to watch in the early afternoon. After that, I'm not sure.
I do know I'll be watching BECKET tonight.

A little Ode for DR Ginny:
L is for the losers, who stop in for a spell-
I is for the inmates, who we've come to know so well.
B is for the burglars, who love to confiscate-
R is for the rowdy, lame, and those of low estate.
A is for the a**holes, who frequently stop in-
R is for the rascals; vagrants full of sin.
Y is for Yours Truly, sitting back observing all-
So let the chase continue, then; relax and have a ball!

Good morning, all! I was having a verybizarre dream concerning my high school best friend and husband of DR Ginny. Richard was walking around tweeting; it seems he needed to see a doctor because he had inhaled a bird, and surgery was a threat ntil the bird died. I am not making any of this up! So I had to take him and Ginny to a hospital. That's all I remember except I believe we may have been at an amusement park. Or a bizarre building.
I have some laundry today and some guidelines on which to continue.
DR edisaurus, they music cues to which you refer may be indeed playoffs, but I suspect a few of them - since you're listening to radio broadcasts - may be scene changes played to denote a change of place or passing of time.

I have never really seen that many Barbara Stanwyck or Gary Cooper movies. Stanwyck of course in Double Indemity and being butch in The Big Valley TV series. As for Mr. Cooper there were maybe movies I believe I saw him in; one was also with Stanwyck Mr. Deeds Goes To Town and High Noon. Other than that I don't think there was anything else.

DRs Singdaw and Elmore - It's a good thing I was here in the Telephone Reference Center to read your recent posts, because they both made me laugh out loud ;D!

DR DENISE
I just finished reading yesterday's postings.
I, as most of the people here, concur that you are a wonderful daughter and you were there for your mother. What a wonderful, brave, loving and caring person you are and should not punish yourself for not being awake at the moment.
Thoughts and prayers are with you.

This newly reworked version of The Pirates of Penzance was conceived by Gordon Greenberg, Nell Benjamin and John McDaniel. The production features book and lyrics by Sir William S. Gilbert, music by Sir Arthur S. Sullivan with additional book & lyrics by Nell Benjamin, music supervision, new arrangements and orchestrations by John McDaniel.
A new book?
new lyrics?
why oh why?
The NYSF production I believe kept the book interploted one song from one other show (It worked IMHO) and it was all in the staging and the performances.
Why oh why do they need to do things like that? The book isn't all that bad.

So, Ginny, did they catch him?
Nope.
And did they get the bird out of Richard's throat?
Hmm, he and DS Rob were both still asleep when I left for work. I'll have to call at lunchtime and check on that.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And, apparently, our radiators are up again too. ??? -I mean, it did get cooler again last night, but not cold enough for the radiators to turn on. And, heck, they didn't turn on until about 30 minutes ago, and it was much cooler last night. ???

The book isn't bad at all! And the music is perfect as it is!
Maybe they think they need Johnny Depp references. Or they have to throw in anti-Bush jokes (there is a time and place, people). Or remove any and all sexist references. Or add the same.
This does not bode well.

Well, there's a reason this is being called Pirates! and not The Pirates of Penzance. It's an adapatation/overhaul of the original G&S piece. There's a more modern feel and sound to it. The plot is the same, but the language of the book/script has been updated/changed in order to fit with the new concept. From what I understand - and from what I heard through the door of the rehearsal studio ;) - the movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean", was part of the inspiration for this new piece.
I guess you could see it as an extension - a big extension - of how companies would update certain lyrics in G&S shows - in particular "I've Got A Little List" from The Mikado - to incorporate some present-day references.
And, heck, if this production helps to keep Papermill going... More power to 'em!

Actually the Joseph Papp production interpolated two numbers. This Papermill version originated at Goodspeed. John McDaniel? Plenty to be said, but nothing good publicly.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Hmm... I guess I should have attended that Barbara Stanwyck Film Festival a few weeks ago here in NYC...
???
-
Of course, I do remember Barbara Stanwyck in "The Thorn Birds".
-
Last night's weather entertainment....
AFter I logged off and shut down we started getting lightning but very little rain in north Fargo, however, south Fargo got nailed and pounded with hail and rain. Moorhead had penny-sized hail. The lightning was so bright it literally lit the sky and some of it was quite incredible. There were a few strikes around the area.
A couple of hours later several storms linked togethere and formed a line and pounded the same area over and over. We just had little rain but lots of lightning.
-
Well...
My sister-in-law, Veronica, called about an hour ago. She was standing in line to board the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. And she was still about 45 minutes from boarding the ferry, so... Her friend then wants to walk up to Wall Street - to take a picture with The Bull - and then over to Ground Zero. And then over to Chinatown for lunch, so...
Since I'm guessing she probably just boarded the ferry, and that trip around the harbor takes a good hour if not more - the Statue is still closed, and she doesn't want to see the museum - I'm thinking we probably won't be meeting up until sometime around 2:00. Possibly 2:30.
In any case, it's been nice having a leisurely morning here at the apartment.
-
So, Ginny, did they catch him?
And did they get the bird out of Richard's throat?
Oh, I forgot that detail in the dream! It was lodged in the calf of one of his legs. I don't know how it got there. It medically astounds me.

Actually the Joseph Papp production interpolated two numbers. This Papermill version originated at Goodspeed. John McDaniel? Plenty to be said, but nothing good publicly.
And from what I understand, there's been further revisions since the Goodspeed mounting. Thus the title change to Pirates!
And here's a link to the New York Times Review (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2006/11/26/nyregion/nyregionspecial2/26cttheater.html?n=Top%2FReference%2FTimes%20Topics%2FPeople%2FS%2FSullivan%2C%20Arthur%20S.) of that production.
There are some interesting tidbits of history in the review, including:
After a one-night performance in London, for copyright purposes, the show opened in New York on New Year’s Eve, with Gilbert and Sullivan in attendance.
I never knew that.
There's also a Correction appended to the review that has some interesting info.

I just looked at the top of the page and got a good laugh. I wonder what triggered those.

And POOF!, they're gone.

Jrand and Pogue,
A good friend of mine got a piece of movie memorablia from BEAU GESTE several years ago. There was a thrift store here that had gotten a shipment of old movie clothing and she got a jacket that was possibly worn by an extra in the movie. It did not have a name it but it have written on the lower left in the back inside what movie it was for. MF and I both looked up the movie and found out that GAry Cooper but neither of us have seen it yet.

Now, that would make an interesting plasticized exhibit, DR Elmore. A leg, showing, tibia, fibula, femur, bird...

DR JMK - What was the question again, s'il vois plait?
Francois was helping me with a colloquialism that had no good French equivalent (for a book I'm writing). I finally had to sit down with the head of the French American School here in Portland and she figured out what would be best.
-
I forgot about Barbara Stanwyck in the BIG VALLEY.
I liked some of stories in that show along with Bonanza.
I looked on IMDB and I forgot that she did make some appearances on Dynasty and THe COlbys.
Wish I could afford cable to see some of the classic movies.

I'm afraid I've never been able to forgive Bubby Stunwhack (isn't that what Mad Magazine called her once?) for being cast as Lorna Moon in Golden Boy. Never mind that it was probably Harry Cohn who cast her, it's her fault Frances didn't get to play that part. ;)

So, is the person on your right dealing drugs and the one on your left looking at porn? That's what a woman complained about to one of my co-workers the other night.
-
So...
Veronica just got off of the ferry, and they're going to make they're way up to Wall Street and Ground Zero. I think. I hope. It sounds like they're just set on having a nice, adventurous 48 hours in NYC. I may be meeting them for lunch later. I may not. I may be meeting them in Times Square - "Where's that?" for dinner. I may not. Or I may just see her next weekend when I head down to Virginia.
I really don't mind playing tour guide, but I also understand wanting to explore on your own. I've done that many times. I'm pretty sure I'll see her tonight, but I think it's best just to let them set their own itinerary for the next couple of hours.
-
If anyone talks to Danise, please send my thoughts and condolence. I am thinking of her.

Whew, what a relief!
Not so fast - notice that Jose put "museum" in quotes - becasue it was really a Library decked-out to look like a museum.

All the right notes, but...
SUSAN NICKALLS
COMPLETE disbelief is usually the first reaction to flash across someone's face when you confess, usually in whispered tones, to being a member of the Really Terrible Orchestra. This is swiftly followed by a loud chortle when you assure them that yes, that really is the name and yes, we really are quite terrible. Indeed the RTO website proudly states that the main ethos of the orchestra is a commitment to lowering standards wherever possible. As RTO co-founder Alexander McCall Smith points out, "the only thing people can say is that you're not as useless as you say you are".
The involvement of one of Scotland's best-loved authors - who generously plugs the RTO on his globe-trotting book tours - has raised the profile of the orchestra considerably, making it arguably one of the best known amateur orchestras in the world. At the last rehearsal, Canadians Beryl and Michael Corber turned up to see if the RTO really did exist. Beryl had just read one of McCall Smith's books, checked the website and decided to call in while on holiday in Edinburgh. After bravely hiding their disappointment that the Professor, as McCall Smith is referred to, was absent from the bassoon section - he rarely turns up to rehearsals, just to keep his standards down - they were delighted to be included in the mandatory RTO audience participation experience.
…
In the violin section, leader Mike Salveson and I spend the rehearsal struggling to find the right music - one of the continual problems in the orchestra, often solved by playing an alternative. Half-way through the second part of the Scottish Suite, Dorothy Leeming (double bass) pipes up to ask if we're at the four/four bar yet. As the whole piece is in three, we're puzzled until Neville-Towle realises she's raced ahead to the third movement. He quips that people often ask why he bothers to announce the pieces, and explains that this is totally for the benefit of the players rather than the audience, in the hope they might find the right music.

ME? A French Pastry?

Thank you one and all, and all and one for the wishes and the cheers!
Being terribly French I say:
You can all have a slice of me today!
P.S. Strictly entre nous, I don't look a day older than yesterday! Now, I won't say that I am the crême de la crême, but let's all eat cake!

Happy Birthday François
Lovely! Un Château for my horse!
-
I'm about to feed the dogs and then leave to visit friends for the evening.
We may watch Val Kilmer. Val is Moses.
You should feed Val to the dogs!! ;)
-
Congratulations, Ron, for passing your milestone!
-
Bon Anniversaire, Francois! And many more!
May it be a Mad Hatter Tea Party kind of day for you -- whimsical, nonsensical, entertaining and most wild!
Well, it seems that's what every single day is for me! :D
Wild? Must be the Oscar in me!! 8)

DR JMK - What was the question again, s'il vois plait?
It IS a long story, Jose, of religious connection!
And I am, and I am NOT "l'élu" of the day! ;)
-
Francois was helping me with a colloquialism that had no good French equivalent (for a book I'm writing). I finally had to sit down with the head of the French American School here in Portland and she figured out what would be best.
We both had thought of "l'élu" if I remember well!
Mr Sarkozy is the recent "élu" here! :-\

A happy birthday to HHWs own little French boy!!!

Good Afternoon!
Dishes are washed. Counters are wiped down. Lotto tickets have been checked - I won $5.00! -Hey, it's something. I've been washed and brushed and burnished. And now I'm just waiting for my sister-in-law to call me when she gets done with her ride around the harbor. -I hope she brought her umbrella with her.
Wow! Jose, you won the lottery!

I just had a long phone conversation with Danise, would that it had been longer but it was interupted by a cellphone battery which went flat without warning.
Since I cleverly store ALL of my important phone numbers in the cell phone, I can't call her back
I sent her an IM but I don't know that she has her laptop on...if anyone speaks to her please let her know what happened!! I apparently have a 3 hour wait to access my phone directory again
Vixmom, can't you use your phone while it charges? I do that all the time

I am sleepy. I went out for breakfast with Paul and stupidly ordered potato pancakes at IHOP. I was thinking about the potato pancakes we used to make out of left over mashed potatoes, these were like McDonalds potato thingies with onion and some herbs in it. Yuck.
Then I went to the Orange City Tulip Festival. The tulips have pretty much all died already. Between the very hot weather and a couple nights of below freezing weather right at the wrong time for tulips, it was a wash out on flowers, but it is a fun Dutch festival and since I'm at least 1/2 Dutch, I enjoy seeing the costumes.
It's also fun to hear people sing and speak in Dutch. My grandfather used to sing to me and tell me funny Dutch sayings. Luckily, when I was a kid I got him to say them into my new cassette recorder, so I still have them.
I ate a bratwurst and a "Dutch Fudge Puppy" Lol....it's a strip of waffle on a stick dipped in fudge and then topped with whip cream. It sounded better than it tasted.
I did make it to the butcher shop and picked up some of their wonderful dried beef and home made ring bologna.
-
It was getting very hot and crowded. So i left before the street washing and the parade. I did see the bicycle singers and a really cool very old portable organ that played music similar to a player piano but it was in books....I'll post some photos later.
I feel like I need to rest....I feel sick....I will not eat junk food ever again...
-
Oh yeah, and the main stage morning music was from Bruele, a really enjoyable Native American band.
-
It's grounds for banishment from the public library, too.
We had an incident at the library about a year and a half ago and it was a minor. Him, his brother and his little sister would come almost every night to the library until their mother was off work.
I caught him once and he was warned. I caught him again a few days later doing it and I called campus security. THey called his mother and she came from work and yelled at him in Spanish. I got the impression that this was not hte first time he had gotten kicked out of a library. All three were requested to leave and the minor was told not to return to the library.

Vixmom, can't you use your phone while it charges? I do that all the time
I do also... One of my bad habits... talking and charging!

TOD: How could I forget Barbara Stanwyck's THE NIGHT WALKER!
(Also one of my favorite book covers!)

I am sleepy. I went out for breakfast with Paul and stupidly ordered potato pancakes at IHOP. I was thinking about the potato pancakes we used to make out of left over mashed potatoes, these were like McDonalds potato thingies with onion and some herbs in it. Yuck.
I have a recipe that I like for potato panckes and potato cigars (I know that is not the right name for them but I cant spell it and they look like cigars when you roll them.) The IHOP ones are HORRID!
It's also fun to hear people sing and speak in Dutch. My grandfather used to sing to me and tell me funny Dutch sayings. Luckily, when I was a kid I got him to say them into my new cassette recorder, so I still have them.
You should try and see if you can get someone to digitize the tape if you still have it. Then you can have back up of it. That is what I have done with some of the interviews I had done with my grandparents and my great-great-great aunt Mary Ackerman Schumacher. She was born in 1898 and is still alive and very feisty!
Those sound good. Love Brats and there is a place in Detroit Lakes, MN and in Ashley, ND that makes homemade sausage and brauts. The one in Detroit Lakes makes blackberry brats.
-
I have never really seen that many Barbara Stanwyck or Gary Cooper movies. Stanwyck of course in Double Indemity and being butch in The Big Valley TV series.
I loved her description in the show's open where they introduce the characters:
"Victoria Barkley...a woman of backbone---and bite!"
-
I just heard from DR Danise. I think she's got a pretty good handle on things at the moment, but I don't envy her the next couple of days and the roller coaster of emotions she'll go through in the next few months.
(((((((( DR DANISE ))))))))

That sounds good. I've been listening to Verdi's Un Ballo In Maschera with Leontyne Price, Carlo Bergonzi, Reri Grist and Robert Merrill. What a glorious opera! And now to disc 2.

Hi everyone,
I’m very sorry about the post last night. I was pretty raw and tired and upset and I guess you all know what I mean.
It was just that I so wanted to be holding Mom’s hand when she passed and I felt like I had deserted my post.
My boss put it into perspective for me; she told me that my Mom knew I was there because I was more then likely snoring to ratter the windows. Any one who has slept anywhere with in hearing range knows that I do snore and very loudly to boot.
My other friend, Thelma, made me go home with her last night so I wouldn’t be alone that first night and was kind enough to take me out to dinner as well. I really couldn’t eat so we went to an IHOP and I had some eggs and toast.
I thought because Mom passed on a Friday, the paperwork/embalming wouldn’t even take place until the first of the week but was very surprised to find out that Mom will be going to Pittsburgh tomorrow night.
I have to get with Thelma (who has kindly decided to go with me) tomorrow afternoon so we can look at flights and hotels and get something booked. I had thought it would be Tuesday before we went but now that I know Mom will be there that might change to Monday. Which ever way it goes the plan is to fly up one day, go and visit the funeral home that day but if it’s to late maybe the next to make all of the arrangements. The funeral itself will be the following day then I will fly home the next day.
In other words I’m planning on 4 days and 3 nights in Pittsburgh. I’m just not sure if that will start on Monday or Tuesday. That sets the funeral on either Wednesday or Thursday of next week but I will post when I know exactly what is going to happen.
I can’t thank all of you enough for the kind words and the phone calls. VixMom, don’t worry about your cell phone. I have dropped calls all the time and I totally understand.
Thank you DR Jane, DR Laura and DR Elmore for your calls. I did sound better, I hope. I can't thank you enough for your concern and kindness.
Again, I apologize for the post last night. I was a basket case and I have no doubt that I will experience being a basket case again in the next week or so. Please bear with me.
-
DR Danise - you sound very composed, but if you need to come here and be a basket case, that's perfectly OK, too. Continued hugs and good thoughts for all you need to take care of in the coming days - don't forget to take care of yourself!
-
Thank you, DR Ginny. I will. Trust me. :)
-
I hope you passed on the thrust of the posts from everyone, because I know she didn't see them and she needs to hear the content of them.
Thank you, Bruce. If I never knew that HHW is my family, I know it now.

Happyest of Birthdays, Dear François. I hope my sorrows don't affect your day. I hope it was fantastic!

Phone call--gotta go but I will be back.

DR elmore3003, I'm singing the Cosi Act I trio you helped me with a few weeks ago. Also some Vaughan Williams songs.

Happyest of Birthdays, Dear François. I hope my sorrows don't affect your day. I hope it was fantastic!
Thank you, Danise! What you just posted makes me feel better for you! I did not celebrate because I'm by myself here in Paris ("So sad to be all alone in this world!") and I don't know if being one year older is something exciting! (I had a nice ice cream bar for dessert!) I'm going to see my family this monday and I got 2 phone calls from Oz earlier in the morning! :D
Renewed condolences to you! You sound like you're going to face the situation gracefully!
-
I did get some viewing in before geiving the afternoon over the reading and some phone calls.
I began with last night's LAW & ORDER. Fairly interesting case with Harry Hamlin as an ex-senator on trial for killing his drug addicted daughter.
The show also set up scenarios so the series could bid goodbye to several castmates. When the show returns in 2008, at least two people on the current incarnation of the show won't be back.
-
Next up was the season finale of SUPERNATURAL, a fabulous season ending episode (which could have effectively been a series finale if the show had been canceled; thankfully, it wasn't). The emotional roller coaster of the episode had me in tears at least twice during the show.
-
I cued up BECKET in the player, but I couldn't resist looking at what the special features were, and so I had to look at some of them. First the Laurence Rosenthal featurette on how he got the job and what it was like to work for Hal B. Wallis.
Naturally clips were shown which whetted my appetite even more to see the movie tonight.
-
There was also a featurette focuisng on Oscar-winning film editor Anne Coates. Loved hearing her opinions on the two actors and her philosophy of editing when you've got marvelous actors in the frame. I agreed with her wholeheartedly.
More clips were shown and made me anticipate BECKET tonight even more. Will get to it soon.
-
I've also got JANE EYRE ready to watch when BECKET concludes. Haven't seen that one in ages either.
-
DR Danise, I am relieved that you are doing better today, I was rather worried about you. Vibes for the Pittsburgh trip and I am glad Thelma will be there with you. Take care!!!!!

Sitting eating grapes, writing a paper, and litsening to Bruce's recording of After The Fair. A nice, calm Saturday afternnon.

Isn't it AHftah The Fair?

Glad Danise visited us today. I think I'll sit on my couch for a few moments.
-
DR Danise, I am relieved to see that you have posted today, and that you seem to be in much more control than last night. I wish I could be with you in Pittsburgh, but it sounds like you have a dear friend in Thelma.
THELMA AND DANISE - Sounds like a new movie title.
-
Danise, you have all our support here. If you need to be a basketcase, you are more than welcomed and you will have many ears and eyes on your behalf...
-
Danise, my deepest condolences to you. You are the epitome of a loving daughter!!

I talked to my mother this morning... My dad had a comeuppance with aunt vulture...
He asked how she wanted her perch wallpapered!! It is where vultures sit...
She was ticked that my dad told her off... I loved it!

I concur with George!

A Very Happy Birthday to DR François!!
-
Gave up trying to catch up on the happenings here at HHW for the past month or so. Things are going about 1000mph here in the SF Bay Area.
West Coast Condolences to DR Danise for her loss. Hang in there, we're here for you.
A West Coast Happy Birthday to our French Pastry, DR Francois.
Without spending too much time on this, the move the East Coast will happen on Monday, October 8 (the day after I finish a run of Annie, Get Your Gun complete with Elmore Orchestrations) in which we'll put the dog into the Honda Element and begin our journey to our new home, Danville, PA and attempt to open a bakery there. More later as things develop.
Public thanks to bk for all he's done the past few days with helping sort out the case of the missing "The Creature Wasn't Nice" CD.
It's nice to be back.
-
Heading down now to begin the evening's video entertainments.

So, is the person on your right dealing drugs and the one on your left looking at porn? That's what a woman complained about to one of my co-workers the other night.
When I first read this (quickly), I thought that you had written, "That's what a woman complained about one of my co-workers the other night." A patron was complaining about one of your co-workers looking at porn?? I didn't see the "complained about to one of my co-workers." ::)
;)

WE get porn peakers every once in awhile at the main library at NDSU and I have had to ask them to leave for that is not acceptable on state property.
In our libraries, I think that there is at least one computer in every branch that has a privacy screen. We have rules regarding protecting people's privacy as much as possible (intellectual freedom, and all that). As long as no one can see what they're looking at (and it's not actually illegal), I'm pretty sure that they can look at whatever they want. ::) When a person logs out of a library computer, it automatically clears the cache and the history so that the next person can't accidentally find what they were viewing or searching.
-
Congratulations, Ron, for passing your milestone!
It's better than passing a stone! ;D
-
We haz slowed to a crawl.

Perhaps if one of our twenty-nine GUESTS (!) would get off their complacent butt cheeks we'd be swimming in postings.

Well, one year ago today, on May 19 (20th to Tomovoz) at 4:16 p.m. PDT, we were only at post 162, so I guess we aren't doing too badly today!
-
WOW! This is like old times.... TCB, George, and Tomovoz.
-
This afternoon, I opened my front door and discovered a man and his entire orchestra sitting on my Welcome mat. Thank you, DR tomovoz!
-
Fargo had a marathon today... I marvel those who can run 26.2 miles!

I'm sure you can deal with the whole ensemble DR TCB.

Time to wash the dishes.
...I seem to do that a lot, don't I? In any case...
Laters...
"Who should we get for our rehearsal pianist?"
"Hey, how about that guy with the dishpan fingers? I hear he's good!"

Just heard on the local news that a woman in the twin cities is pregnant with sextuplets. She took fertility drugs

I'm sure you can deal with the whole ensemble DR TCB.
As long as the conductor knows how to wave his wand, TCB is happy, I guess! :o

There goes another orchestra!
She should have gone to Six Cities and have ended up with twins! ;)

Yes, we were all celebrating my French Pastry Day and had no time for HHW! I remember! 8)
-
I'm off...but we already knew that, didn't we. ;)
;D
Until later!
-
Good evening...that nap was wonderful.
I woke up to Boo curling up and purring by my head. She hasn't done that In a long time. Yesterday we all went to the vet. Callie had her glands cleaned and they both had pedicures. Boo has lost another 1/2 pound, which made absolutely no sence to me. She's eating, not getting sick and running and playing, but the vet found no problems so, we're going to see where she is in another couple weeks. If her weight is stable or she gains a little then she'll get a clean bill of health.
They were both very upset to go to the vet, but have been so loving since we got back home. Amazing.
-
DR Danise, glad to see things are a little better today. You're in my thoughts and prayers.
-
WE get porn peakers every once in awhile at the main library at NDSU and I have had to ask them to leave for that is not acceptable on state property.
Before I had a computer I used the ones at the library down the street. I was trying to figure out which internet provider to use once I did get a computer.
The thing I learned is, be careful how you type! I typed wettv instead of webtv and windows full of porn started popping up all over the screen and I couldn't stop it. Each time I closed one window another opened. I finally pulled the plug on the computer and slunk out of the library!
-
Thank-you, DR Edisauraus, for giving DRs Elmore, MBarnum, Jose, and TBC something new to look up.
;D
-
I've got some pork roasting in the oven, poked through with garlic and ginger, and slathered with mustard and soy sauce for a crust.
Some baked beans and a salad on the side should make for a nice dinner.

Good to hear from DR DANISE.
DR FJL - here is the wisdom you asked for. But it's just a loaner.

Exciting things happening for DR MATTHEW....looking forward to the next installment in this adventure.
DR MATTH mentioned Ms Stanwyck in ALL I DESIRE. This VHS was sent to me last year by DR MBARNUM, and I too think it's terrific all around!
DR DAKOTA CELT - very exciting about your friend and the BEAU GESTE jacket!! That's lucky! Fine movie, very romantic and exciting!
-
DRELMORE - your dream crashed the Dream-O-Matic 6000, so there is no interpretation.

Do you dream about SEX?
Robert Taylor & Barbara Stanwyck in THE NIGHT WALKER...yes, DR EDISAURUS it is a classic....and speaking of backbone and bite...remember what she told Heath: "Show us what you inherited from your father. Show us some of Tom Barkley's GUTS!"

Wow - if THE CLOSER is featured ON DEMAND, I can see the shower scene as often as I like!

I remember thinking Charles Frank was very handsome.

I haven't watched Val/Moses in HD yet.

MAD TV season finale tonight.

DR Danise-My deepest condolences.
I wish I were still in Pittsburgh. At least I have the comfort of knowing Thelma will be with you.

We are home from Portland and Sherlock’s return visit to the specialist. Thank you all for your concern & good vibes, especially Danise you always remembered him even during this difficult time.

A happy birthday to our sedate and understated DR Francois - no PARVENU he!
I'd like to be a PARVENU strolling down Park Avenue! 8)
-
...remember what she told Heath: "Show us what you inherited from your father. Show us some of Tom Barkley's GUTS!"
Oh my God---I am laughing so hard! I completely forgot about that one! Every time I heard it, I pictured Heath whipping out a handful of GUTS!

Wow - if THE CLOSER is featured ON DEMAND, I can see the shower scene as often as I like!
There you go! It will be featured on wettv!
-
Thank you, thank you for all the greetings!
However, even with one more year on the counter... I am quite bored here in the middle of the night!
I need some cake to cheer me up!
I'm afraid I am going to only have some no-too-fresh-bread with butter and jam! Could be worse, right?!
A parvenu with butter and jam!

We are home from Portland and Sherlock’s return visit to the specialist. Thank you all for your concern & good vibes, especially Danise you always remembered him even during this difficult time.
How are things looking for Sherlock, Jane?
-
We didn’t get the miracle we were hoping for, however, we did have good news on a bad scenario. Sherlock is minimally symptomatic bilaterally.
After the physical exam the doctor said he is greatly improved and that surgery at this time would most likely make him worse. The x-rays show some improvement on the left elbow while the right looks the same.
Our next step is to permit him to return to normal activity (for the average dog, which is no where near the level Echo had) and see what happens. The doctor suspects this will exasperate the problem but still wants us to see what will happen. We know we have to let Sherlock be a puppy again and he needs to build his muscle mass back up. We can only hope for the best and that surgery will never be required.
The doctor has once again impressed us and we feel fortunate to have found him.
-
Parvenu, no!
Dupar's menu, yes!

Hi Edi. I was typing while you posted.

And could that be considered a "Dutch Treat"?

Alimentary, my dear Sherlock!
You need to get some weight on again!

DR Danise...I'm glad to hear from you and know that you are feeling better today.
And since I'm being nice, I won't even ASK you how your boss knows about your snoring!

Sherlock puppy vibes!
And remember how she would flick Heath's vest when she said that? When I was little and the show started....they kept talking about a son her husband had that she didn't know about...and I kept thinking...how could she forget she had a baby????
-
There you go! It will be featured on wettv!
Let me check that out on the innernit.

I have the first season of THE BIG VALLEY on DVD...still a fun show! And I liked the theme song a lot. Too bad it didn't have lyrics...
The Big Valley....
The Big Valley...................
That's as far as I got!

I just finished Season 3 of UPSTARS DOWNSTAIRS with the declaration of war, August 1914. I'm not ready to jump into Season 4's WWi angst, so I think I'll take a breather for a couple of weeks and watch other things. I never caught much of the original episodes from the 1970s so it's fun seeing it all now.
And on that, I'm closing down the computer for the night. Till tomorrow!
-
Shower time....and then MAD Tv.....and then I think I will watch THE PRESTIGE...thanks again to DR JOSE who reminded me of the correct title of the movie.
-
UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS???
Remember the American version on CBS....
-
And remember how she would flick Heath's vest when she said that? When I was little and the show started....they kept talking about a son her husband had that she didn't know about...and I kept thinking...how could she forget she had a baby????
Yes---a flick of the vet! And about the baby---too funny!
I want to see an episode right now!
-
Vibes to Sherlock and his lovely and devoted owners....
I am also grateful that you found an excellent vet Jane!
-
Yes. You could be having some no-too-fresh-bread with butter and jam in Atlanta instead of PARIS!
LOL!
Funny how Paris looks exactly like Atlanta, at 4:24 am!! ;)
-
DBF Jon just left. He stopped over for a brief visit to fill me in on his interview at Dominican in San Rafael. He left on Wednesday to visit some freinds in the Bay area and then had his interview on Thursday and Friday. He did not make it back to Fargo last night due to the weather was rather nasty due to the lightning and hail that parts of the area were getting.
He even brought me a treat... Cafe Latte Krispies by See's Candies... I am about to nibble on one... I am curious...
How did he know I liked coffee.... hee hee hee

You crack me up Francois along with MissKaren and singdaw. You guys never fail to put a smile on my face...
And remember! Let your smile be your umbrella!
(Thanks for the compliments! You're making my (B) day!)
-
Oh, oh! A new page!! Will BK approve?!
-
no....
Will we ever get to page 12...
-
You crack me up Francois along with MissKaren and singdaw. You guys never fail to put a smile on my face...
What's wrong with FJL?
(I know; his humor is more sophisticated! And I am not saying that because he's a parvenu;;; I mean a "revenue", internal or not! ;))
-
How does one do the curlicue that is on the "c" in Francois' name on the keyboard so it shows up when you type it?
I copied his name and pasted it
-
no....
Will we ever get to page 12...
Is that really for you to say that?? ;)
-
I don't know but I think Cillaliz looks like an altar boy on that new pic of her!
(Hey! I can say anything I want. It's my birthday after all!)
-
Dang I remember watching him... A definite cutie... Mind you I was only 13 yrs old when I watched the show on reruns on the local nbc affiliate back in the early 80s
I remember Big Valley. I was young and it wasn't my favorite, but I remember it
-
He is a character also... I forgot him and I offer a humble apology...
No, bk will probably reprimand me for taking his punch line...
-
I don't know but I think Cillaliz looks like an altar boy on that new pic of her!
(Hey! I can say anything I want. It's my birthday after all!)
You should have seen me in the little Dutch boy hat!
-
Big Valley for me was far more interesting than People's court or Brady Bunch or Edge of Night.
-
You should have seen me in the little Dutch boy hat!
Oh, but I've seen you in the "Little Red Hat"! (A 101 In The Shade reference!)
-
You should have seen me in the little Dutch boy hat!
Did you get to wear wooden shoes too?!
And baggy black pants?!
-
Cilla, i bet you looked adorable...
There is a prof at NDSU that is from Holland originally. She is a delightful person to chat with.
-
Cilla, i bet you looked adorable...
Oh, but she still does.... even without the hat!
-
I remember thinking Charles Frank was very handsome.
You remember correctly. He was indeed very handsome.
-
I had the great good fortune to watch BECKET tonight. It was just as magnificent as I remembered it being, and all things considered, the DVD is pretty wonderful, too. Yes, there are some scenes that are a bit problematic with judder or less than rich color. But to think the film was almost lost to us and now we have it looking so good, well, I'm thrilled and very grateful.
-
Is there an echo in here?
-
Did you get to wear wooden shoes too?!
And baggy black pants?!
No, not me! But there were many who did. I have photos in my other computer, I'll post a few later
-
Next, I watched FOURTEEN HOURS. I hadn't seen it in a long time. Even though I watched it from the beginning, I guess my eyes glazed over since I didn't remember Agnes Moorehead playing the mother and Robert Keith as the father. And then all those starlets: Jeffrey Hunter, Grace Kelly, Debra Paget, Barbara Bel Geddes in small but sweet parts.
And then other marvelous character actors like Paul DOuglas and Howard Da Silva and Jeff Corey and David Burns and Harvey Lembeck, among other famous faces on screen for just a few moments.
-
Finished the evening watching about twenty minutes of JAWS on the Universal-HD channel. It looked fine, and at least they hadn't cropped it to get a 1.78:1 pictures from the 2.35:1 source.
-
Francois - I ain't no revenuer. I help people with their taxes, I don't scare them :)
-
Not about taxes, at any rate.
-
Money, you should pardon the expression, should be like revenuers - they should be spread around encouraging things to grow. (almost a Dolly reverence)
-
What the heck am I talking about?
-
But I am so close to post #7000, though I do want to make #7000 count.
-
An' a one, an' a two... #7000 for me!
-
That counts for something, I guess.
-
DR FJL...congratulations on your millstone!
Now---go write some lyrics for The Big Valley theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Zd64Yb_jrw
-
To do this: ç on a Mac, just hold down "option" and hit "c".
For P.C.---hell if I know!
-
I was thinking of something like THE BIG BELLY starring Barbara Sandwych, but then I saw Francois say something about my humor being sophisticated. :)
-
Congrats Fred
-
Francois - I ain't no revenuer. I help people with their taxes, I don't scare them :)

"Give" me cats any day! And you know what I am talking about, because YOU are not TCB!! ;D
-
I guess that bidet joke didn't make much of a splash with Francois.
NOTHING has ever made a splash with me here, rest assured!
That gives me hot flushes!! ;)

So... Here's the short, listed version of the past ten hours:
Late lunch in Little Italy with my sister-in-law and her friend, Erin.
Walking and shopping in Chinatown and along Canal Street.
Veronica bought some "designer" handbags, and I bought a "designer" watch, as well as some movies that are in current release. Ssshh....
Stopped off in Chelsea to drop off some things at the place they're staying.
Went to Macy's. -And all I have to say is that Veronica loves to SHOP!
Went to Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center). And since Veronica had her military I.D. on her - she's not in the service, but my brother is (Coast Guard - semper paratus) - all three of us were able to head up to the 67th floor for just over the price of one regular admission(!!!!).
Took pictures on top of Rockefeller Center.
Took pictures by the skating rink/summer garden at Rockefeller Center.
Took pictures of St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Went to the M&M's Store.
Took pics in Times Square.
Went to Starbucks - Veronica needed her White Mocha, Extra Hot.
Walked them to the subway.
They headed back down to Chelsea, and I headed on back uptown.
WHEW!

All in all, it was a great day. The rain wasn't too bad, and we had enough breaks here and there so that we didn't tire ourselves out too much. -I had never been through the Women's and Junior's departments at Macy's - WOW! That's a LOT of real estate to cover on foot. Thankfully, there were lots of benches in the shoe departments.
And I had a fun time being the tour guide. We may try to meet up tomorrow morning before they head back down to DC. And since Levain opens at 10:00... ;D
-If anything, we'll have brunch down in Chelsea, and then I'll make sure they get back to the bus pick-up.
-
OH!
And we just happened to be heading to the subway when Avenue Q was letting out, and since we still needed one more gift for my nieces and nephew, I decided to head on over to the Golden to pick up one of the Trekkie Monster puppets. And to say HI! to former DR Jason too.
I have to say, Jason looks great! Veronica even used the word "Hot" to describe him. I'm very proud of him for sticking to his diet program, and, frankly, I'm a little jealous, as well as a little inspired.
And he passed on the staff rate on the puppet too! -So I got two of them!
:)
-
DR Danise - :)
-
DR Jane - Thanks for the Sherlock update. And, again, it's nice to know that he has such loving parents.
-
HA!
"Showtime at the Apollo" is showing some of the acts that did not make it to Amateur Night.
;D

But to think the film was almost lost to us and now we have it looking so good, well, I'm thrilled and very grateful.
I must correct two things here - the film's color is exactly what it always was, almost perfectly replicated on this DVD. And the film was never close to being lost - only the rights were problematic - even the "restoration" wasn't a full-blown things - they just dusted off the negative and made a new interpositve and digitally cleaned it up.
-
Out of the hundreds and hundreds of DVDs that I have and have not even opened yet, I could not find a single movie that I wanted to watch tonight...so I watched some episodes of MIKE HAMMER...you know that Darrin McGavin was quite an actor...and Miss Yvette Vickers, co-star of ATTACK OF THE 50 FT WOMEN had a great role in one of the episodes.
-
How does one do the curlicue that is on the "c" in Francois' name on the keyboard so it shows up when you type it?
On a PC keyboard:
Hold down the ALT key and enter 0231 = ç
(0199) = Ç for Upper case C with cedilla
NOTE: Must use number keypad, not numbers above the latter keys)
der Brucer
Note to get a complete list of special character codes from a Windows machine: run - charmap.exe
If you have MS Windows, use Insert Symbol to pull up the Character Map
-
Since I am still wide awake, due to a later afternoon nap, I think I will cuddle in bed with Freddy, Dog Bosco and a book on Bollywood movies that I started the other day.
-
What, we're all too busy to do seven posts to get us to 400?
-
Perhaps one of our twenty-six GUESTS would like to help?
-
Oh, I'll just do it myself.
-
I'd rather do it myself.
-
Will we never get to page fifteen?
-
Perhaps we will, by the skin of Thornton Wilder's teeth.
-
I shall not rest until we've hit 400.
-
I wonder what 400 ever did to me that I should want to hit it?
-
I am my own frenzy.
-
An' a one, an' a two... #7000 for me!
FJL, congrats on 7000 Posts! :D
