I watched THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX today. The color is luscious, of course, showing up most impressively Orry-Kelly's magnificent gowns for Elizabeth in a rainbow of bright colors.
But there is speckling and some print damage present and, worst of all, scenes where the three Technicolor strips are out of alignment and there's color ringing all over the place in addition to being out of focus. I guess it would have been far too costly to go back and fix those scenes where the strips didn't match, but it took me right out of the movie every time it happened (which were long shots mostly).
The close-ups and medium shots of the stars were sharp and gorgeous. Yep, Errol ranks up there with Tyrone Power in terms of male beauty. Breathtaking.
