Well, you've read the notes, the notes made a difference, and now it is time for you to post until the different cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SOREDEMO. Our first Japanese word of the day. Points for anyone who translates.
-
I have no idea what SOREDEMO means. :-\
But...Happy Birthday to FDR (that's Former Dear Reader in HHW lingo) Laura II! :)
-
And on that note (F-natural), I'm off to bed.
-
I think that SOREDEMO means never the less.
-
Still, yet, even so.
-
Is there such a thing as HE crab soup, and does it taste altogether different from SHE crab soup??
-
SOREDEMO.

And the word of the day is: SOREDEMO. Our first Japanese word of the day. Points for anyone who translates.
And The Song Of The Day(Which IS the Translation) Is: NEVERTHELESS

The story about the guy who dressed up as his late mother for fraud purposes is now being referred to on CNN as similar to TOOTSIE, rather than the similarity to PSYCHO being talked about yesterday - TOOTSIE is a better analogy, i think, since for the real-life guy it was all about money concerns.
-
Thursday morning greetings! I'm getting ready to host my book group tonight and Richard is getting ready to sing with the shape-noters.
-
Good morning, all! I'm off to Park Avenue and the McGlinnventory: the story of the rest of my life, I fear.
When I get back today, I have to clean this dump and put some things away. Then, back to Moross.
TOD: chewing my nails.

Happy Birthday to one of my favorite authors:
Gail Godwin (http://www.gailgodwin.com)
-
Okay. Off to the East Side.
-
BK
I want to get Show Girl and I want to buy two books for Julie who you "re-met" at Monday's reading. But I do not see a place to order the books.
Can You help?
-
Happy Birthday to one of my favorite authors:
Gail Godwin (http://www.gailgodwin.com)
And to my sister!! :D Who is not quite as prolific.
-
DR Michael S., bk has said that the books will be added to the new Kritzerland site at a later date.

All around the town.

Now have to figure out why the help files don't seem to be working on my new Finale 2010 software.
-
DR JoseSPiano - thanks for the Musical Theater Dictionary. That was fun. ;D
-
Oh, and yesterday's menu was:
two-colored gazpacho with tomato tartar and pesto
chicken breast or skatefish
white and dark chocolate checkerboard cheescake with raspberry coulis.

I'd say HHW does a pretty good job, too.

DR Jose, re: your comments yesterday on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.
I have never seen Mary Jane's alter ego before, and i've been watching for a while. I mean obviously i've heard her mentioned many times through the years. I wonder if it's been like 20 years since she was last on.
I really find her creepy to watch and wonder what she's planning to do. At first i thought she would kidnap sharon's baby. Then i thought maybe little summer. Although on today's US show (we get it a day before here) she made a much more interesting proclamation which may make me like her!
-
Good morning!
It was overcast when I got up, but not especially as cool as overcast skies often means. The clouds are clearing away now, and it's getting sunny and warmer on the way to a high of 90!
Argh!
-
Just made my SHOW GIRL purchase, and I have to say the new Kritzerland is a pleasure to use. Congrats on the reboot of that site!
-
It has been a busy morning right across the street from my open office window. Two different families are moving out of the condo complex over there, so the street has two huge moving vans there and a lot of activity. I head one box fall off the van's lifting crane and heard definite breakage. I felt so bad for that person who just lost something. I hope it wasn't priceless.
-
Yes, bk, THE FUGITIVE was an early Warner Blu-ray and has always gotten below average score in reviews. I never bothered to upgrade my DVD since I don't watch the film all that often.
-
BONNIE AND CLYDE, on the other hand, looks the best it's ever looked to me on the Blu-ray transfer.
-
My work project today is the Fox Blu-ray of PREDATOR 2. I've never seen the film before, but I did see the original, so I suspect I've got a bloody violent experience ahead of me later today when I start on it.
There are a good number of bonuses on the disc, too: two commentaries and a bunch of featurettes. So it looks like this disc is going to take up a major portion of my day today.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And it's raining (again) here in NYC. Which makes it a good day to stay apartment-bound to take care of some cleaning, organizing, futzing, etc. Or just surf the interwebs all day. We shall see...

DR Jennifer - I think it has been around 20 years since that character's last appearance on "Y&R". I may have to investigate further.
-
And the word of the day is: SOREDEMO. Our first Japanese word of the day. Points for anyone who translates.
I guess someone has been catching up on their Academy Award Foreign Language Film submissions.
-
Okay. Off to the East Side.
DR elmore - I hope the rain "cooperates" with your commute to and from the East Side today.
-
DR JoseSPiano - thanks for the Musical Theater Dictionary. That was fun. ;D
You're welcome, DR DAW!
-
Oh, and yesterday's menu was:
two-colored gazpacho with tomato tartar and pesto
chicken breast or skatefish
white and dark chocolate checkerboard cheescake with raspberry coulis.
What were the two colors of the gazpacho? Yellow and Red?
-
DR Sandra will be interested in the gazpacho recipe.
-
What were the two colors of the gazpacho? Yellow and Red?
Yes indeed.
-
TOD: I would love to stop my penchant for procrastination.
ELMORE: I have been a life-long nail-chewer. But in the last ten years or so, I have gone through long bouts where I don't bite them down to the nub. I've been in one of those periods for the last several months, and have nice nails right now. Still when they need trimming, I don't clip them, but nibble them down.
BK: Went to the new KRITZERLAND site. Looks Faboo!
-
Yes, Jose, thanks for that Dictionary link!!!
-
Bad habits?
I've broken my worst one: biting my nails. I just woke up one morning about thirty years ago, decided it was a nasty habit, and have never done it again.
I've never smoked, and I only drink lightly, so that's not a problem.
I suppose I need to break the habit of buying so many DVDs as I have more now than I'll probably ever get to watch more than a few times, but there always seem to be favorites that still await release, and when they come out, I can't help myself.

I received my Passport today - just about three weeks after applying. I had to call because my birth certificate was NOT included in the envelope, and Sarah the government employee told me that those documents were mailed one day later for security purposes. SO if you apply for a passport, don't be alarmed if your ID documents do not arrive with it.
-
DR JENNIFER thanks for the TRUE BLOOD vs. TWILIGHT info yesterday. I am still debating.

I now have some new words in my Musical Theatre Vocabulary. One of my very favorite definitions is:
Dance Call: A place where Sondheim Actresses humiliate themselves.
-
TOD: Proctastination. But I don't want to talk about that now. I'll talk about it later.
-

Okay. Off to the East Side.
DR elmore - I hope the rain "cooperates" with your commute to and from the East Side today.
No, alas, it was totally hellish. I got on the bus that was already packed at 79th and Amsterdam, rode over to transfer to the Lexington Avenue bus, also packed, discovered my watch battery had died and it was always going to be 9:15 today when I would guess was it was around 9:50, got off the bus to a torrential downpour and wandered around LExingron and 55th Street, hoping a jewelry shop could replace the battery. Couldn't find one.
I got to the office around 10:20, soaking wet and extremely crabby. I found today an incomplete libretto for libretto, an incompete vocal score to SWEET ADELINE, and an incomplete copy of the Overture to Gershwin's PRIMROSE with my orchestrated fill-ins. I stopped at the jeweler at 86th and Broadway on my way back for a new watch battery so I now know what time it is. I got back here, soaked in a hot tub, and I'm going to have some chicken soup.
-
DR ELMORE the Ron Raines photo is great! Thanks so much. I also got The Princess and the Goblin which I will start reading in a week or so.
-
Does ANYBODY really know what time it is?
-
Why don't people call before they invade your house?
Because then YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU would be a very tiresome play.

FYI, GOJIRA is being released on Blue Ray very soon, I hear.

DR ELMORE the Ron Raines photo is great! Thanks so much. I also got The Princess and the Goblin which I will start reading in a week or so.
DR JRand58, it was my pleasure. The books a real rag; I enjoyed it immensely with its numerous faults. The writer sure hates a lot of celebrities on Broadwqay and Hollywood. I'm wondering if the songwriting team is based on Jones and Schmidt since they're clearly doing Julius Monk revues, but he really kicks Mary Rodgers around.
-
Does ANYBODY really know what time it is?
Lorenz Hart does!

-
Why don't people call before they invade your house?
Because then YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU would be a very tiresome play.
This is VERY VERY true. I always am amused by the fact that Penny becomes a playwright because a typewriter is delivered to the house by mistake one day.
Do you think that one day a piano was delivered by mistake to Marvin Hamlisch's house?
-
They ought to put QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE on Blue-ray..that would look spectacular, dontcha think?
It would be SPEC-TACULAR!!!!
-
They ought to put QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE on Blue-ray..that would look spectacular, dontcha think?
But then, Mikey, you would feel the need to own a Blue-Ray player which you can't afford because of all those $1.00 Nadir DVDs you buy at the Piggly-Wiggly.
-
I haven't gotten any new Blu Rays.....we shall see what next week brings.
-
DR DAW my Titanic book set has NOT shipped, although the price keeps dropping. It was due to ship today, so I expect a notice later this afternoon.....that it won't.
-
I love $1 Nadir DVD's......the perfect way to view DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS and DIVORCE HIS/DIVORCE HERS.....

DR ELMORE if I can't figure out any of the characters in The Princess and the Goblin, I may need a key from you.

Now you know: it's really about DRsingdaw and me and should have been titled THE TROLL AND THE GOBLIN, but one of us had sex with the writer.
So, in retaliation, one of the chapters in my memoirs will be about the Oberlin Baritone who was such a Troll they built a bridge over him.

DR DAW you may get an interesting response to that.

I am reading a very interesting book right now.....Beau Brummell The Ultimate Man of Style...by Ian Kelly - that seems to say that George Beau Brummell met George IV, when the latter was the Prince of Wales age nearly thirty....and Beau was a 16 year old Eton schoolboy and suddenly Beau became a member of the Prince's Own Tenth Regiment with its fancy uniforms...and within a couple of years Best Man at George's wedding to a German princess.... For WHATEVER reason we can surmise.

I bought a digital video camera today, and next week I will learn to make short videos!!! I will have to convert the asf files, I think.....but several HHW'ers already know how to do that, so I can put the movies on disk to play on my TV.....so I may need a tutorial Monday or Tuesday.

Well, I endured PREDATOR 2 this afternoon when I got in from lunch. It was not a very well made movie, and even though there are some really fine actors in the cast, they're all just terrible. The director must not have cared what kind of overwrought or brittle performances they were giving.
It's the same basic movie as the first except set in L.A. instead of the Central American jungle. But stalk and kill, stalk and kill, over and over. And Danny Glover is no believable action hero. I guess he was still a big movie name in 1990, but he's not very good. They needed much more of a physical presence than he can deliver.
Adam Baldwin still looked very youthful in 1990 and was very pleasing eye candy. I thought about DR MBarnum when Kent McCord had his couple of scenes. He still looked very good.
-
I sampled both commentaries. The director's talk was a drag. He basically describes what's on the screen but not in every scene so there are lots of dead places.
The writers get their own track. They have more interesting anecdotes to relate about the making of the film, but actually neither commentary is all that great.
-
And I had time to watch the half hour "making of" documentary which was OK and did cover most of the areas of the film that fans would want to know about (make up/creature effects, stunts, the cast).
-
Does ANYBODY really know what time it is?
Just go to www.time.gov ;)

GOOD LUCK DR GEORGE!
THANKS, JANE!! :-*

It looks like there are about five more items in the special features menu, so I will have time tonight to probably finish THOUSANDS CHEER and watch BURN NOTICE tonight.

I must hop off-line now and get some writing done.

I have nothing to report.

I had some chicken soup, puttered about, napped for around 45 minutes, and I'm waiting for a confirmation about my work day tomorrow.
I also ordered a couple of Victorian ghost story anthologies from Amazon.

We had some serious storms last night around 11:00 AM and again this morning around 6:00 AM. We may be getting another round tonight. No tornados here, but many fairly close by. We did get 1.7 inches of rain and 60-70 mph winds. Lots of limbs down, power was out nearby etc

DR Jeanne, while I was away did you have any luck finding your new home?
-
Okay, this is really becoming irksome. Where in tarnation IS everyone? Have we just been abandoned? People just tired of the site? Let me know if it's the latter, really.
-
I've had another almost-relaxing day - did have to ship some packages and print out a lot of Show Girl orders. I had Islands for lunch, but there was so much traffic - freeway and streets - it was ridiculous. No reason for it at all - no accidents, no nothing, just endless cars driving slowly and poorly.
-
I just finished watching one motion picture on Blu-Ray and will definitely watch another, and then listen to CDs.

Death Masks:
In roughly bottom-to-top, left-to-right order, the faces in this photo belong to:
On the ledge: Abraham Lincoln, Laurence Barrett, Sir Richard Owen, Robert E. Lee, John C. Calhoun, William Tecumseh Sherman
The bottom six hanging on the wall: Ludwig van Beethoven, Antonio Canova, John Keats, Hyrum Smith, Joseph Smith, Jean-Paul Marat
The next highest six: Franz Liszt, Napoleon Bonaparte (well, maybe), Frederick the Great, George Washington, William Blake, Oliver Cromwell
The next highest five: Jeremy Bentham, Aaron Burr, Friedrich Nietzsche, Edward Kean, Ulysses S. Grant
And the top row: Jonathan Swift, Maria Malibran, David Garrick, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Moore.
-
Anyone care to add any faces to the wall?? ;)
-
Very interesting, DAW.
-
Well, I need to be going. It's rehearsal time. HOPEFULLY, we'll get all the way through act 2 tonight.
We'll see. :)
-
Okay, this is really becoming irksome. Where in tarnation IS everyone?
I had quite the busy day. I typed, printed, typed some more, watered tomatoes, fed fish, etc. all while waiting for emails that never came.
-
Anyone care to add any faces to the wall?? ;)
i wouldn't mind hanging yours over my mantel! :-*
-
Good Evening!
I decided to take advantage of the break in the rain, and walk up to El Malecon for dinner: rotisserie chicken and fried cassava. I had thought I had done my best when I told the waiter that I would like to order "medio pollo y yuca frita", but after a couple seconds of getting puzzled looks from him, I eventually pointed to the picture on the menu to confirm my order. And then he re-confirmed it by repeating it in English. Hmmm...
-
...And tonight's dinner "entertainment" was provided by the couple who was sitting at the table next to mine. Well, at least by the man of the couple. As soon as I heard him mention how well his therapy session went, well, I could tell it was going to be quite the interesting conversation. Unfortunately - for his date at least - he was sort of a loud-talker. There were moments when she responded, and he would ask her to speak up, but she would just lean in closer to him to keep thing more private. Sadly, during the time that I was there, he never got the point. Or any point, for that matter.
*I truly almost laughed out loud when he said, "I really wanted to see you after I got out of my "Jeopardy" test."
-
Anyone care to add any faces to the wall?? ;)
i wouldn't mind hanging yours over my mantel! :-*
Is there any room left over your mantel?

I'm sitting on my couch like so much fish watching a mediocre film I'd never seen. Nice performances occasionally, but a director out of his element.

I think it's time to read a few more pages of my Mary Martin biography before crashing. Since I have a day to do various and sundry tasks, including the laundry, I will be up reatively early, but it looks as if I will be primarily working around the apartment.
-
Oh, goodie! DR MattH and I sent us over to page 6.
-
Next, I watched (for the umpteenth time) THE WIZARD OF OZ. I'm trying to decide about buying that expensive Blu-ray box set of the film when it comes out this fall. I've seen the movie in HD on TNT-HD, and it's really wonderful, and I know the Blu-ray will be even more spectacular, but watching the last DVD release tonight, I like what I see, so I'm still on the fence about it.
If there was a 2-disc Blu-ray set for around $20-25 I'd buy it without hesitation. As it stands now, there don't seem to be any plans to release anything but this collector's set.
-
I also watched the featurette about the restoration of OZ in that particular release. They scanned the film in 4K before downconverting it to DVD.
The new OZ has been scanned in 8K and then downconverted to Blu-ray, so it does promise to be rich with more detail than we've ever seen in the movie before.

I had meant to mention today that while I was sorting through the McGlinnventory, I came across a copy of a full score from the 1908 musical LITTLE NEMO. On the title page, the copyist had written down some information on number of copies of orchestra parts:
5 Violin 1
4 Violin 2
2 Violas
2 Celli
2 Basses
3 Percussion!
I had always said that I knew there were two percussionists for BABES IN TOYLAND but the part looked as thought it were for three players. Today, 2 percussion is considered a lot, but I guess if Victor Herbert needed 3, he got 'em!
My real name is Sherlock Holmes.

Next I watched another episode of THE CLOSER from the season 4 set. This was the one with Sanchez getting three shots in the back while they were striving to prevent a massacre at a mall. I didn't remember which of the two boys was the nut job, so it was a kind of pleasant surprise when he was revealed.
-
So, I neeed to revise some information I've written since I am clearly more informed since 10 am this morning.
-
Okay, I've done my bit to get to page 7.
-
And then I watched tonight's BURN NOTICE from the DVR. Wonderful, exciting episode. I love the actor who plays Nate, by the way.
-
Okay, I've done my bit to get to page 7.
Good work, DR Elmore! No one can say we weren't trying! :)
-
Here's my contribution:
-
DR ELMORE thanks for the DVD recommendation. I did not know Ian Kelly's book had been the basis of a film. Don't buy it yourself, I found it in the bargain bin and I will go back Monday and see if there is another one.
-
Lovely photo DR LAURA.
-
Lovely photo DR LAURA.
Agreed!
-
Good rehearsal tonight, and of course the entire COMPANY will be in on Monday to stage the opening of the show.
-
yes, DR CILLA LIZ - I like that Far Side cow cartoon too.
Two other Cow Classics:
Two cows sit on the couch. The phone is ringing. Cow says: "There it goes again, and here we sit without opposable thumbs.
Two cows doing the Charleston on the coffee table while holding martini glasses. Farmer's wife says to farmer: "I told you we shouldn't invite the cows in for drinks."

Bed time....work tomorrow.

Cows

Not sure why I'm still awake, no storm predicted until the middle of the night, so I may as well get a few hours of sleep.
-
I'm heading down to bed now.
Good night!

Well...
I've spent a good chunk of tonight futzing with my iPhone. I installed the new 3.0 OS yesterday, and all went well. But when I went to do another Sync and Backup, I noticed that it took a long(!) time for those processes to finish, almost close to 90 minutes. -As opposed to 3-5 minutes. So...
I did some Googling, and consulted with some other iPhone owners/friends. Some of them had the same issue, some of them didn't. Well...
I went ahead and did a complete Restore, and that actually seems to have fixed whatever was causing the "hang time" with the Backup and Sync.
*Of course, I'm just wondering what kind of "stuff" will be happening when the new iPhone 3GS goes on sale at 7:00am. I know a couple of people who will be lining up bright and early at the 5th Avenue Apple Store - and I may go down and join them in line. I'm not in the market to buy the new model, but I am curious to see if they have the same madhouse as they did when the 3G came out.
-
About to start a third motion picture, but doubt I'll watch more than thirty minutes, at which point I'll switch over to CD listening.

OK folks here are some random thoughts about Monday's reading of The First Nudie Musical. I know it was a reading and not staged. But I did like it.
I have seen the film and I enjoyed the stage version as much and even more in some places. The people I was with enjoyed the show and the audience were laughing and enjoying the songs.
The program did not list the songs and therefore some of them are on a best guess basis,
“Porno Business” is the first new song and very enjoyable. I especially like the word play/rhyme scheme and judging by the audience reaction they like the song as well.
Niki Scalera who plays Rosie has a good voice and her comic timing is very good too, She has a couple of solos but I can't read my notes for the name for the first. I would like to see more of her character in the show. Her other solo is I Don't Need Fireworks. I think this can be a breakout song and might just become a staple for cabaret acts.
I enjoyed the performance of Russ Hobbie as George Brenner. As BK mentioned before he really does remind one of Alan Abalew from the film, but Alan’s tongue was a lot shorter. The audience seemed to appreciate Hobbie’s performance and the use of his tongue.
I thought the performance of Michael Irish as John Smithee was quite good. He didn't quite have the same charm as Bruce had in the film, but he has a lot of potential if he continues with the role.
Act Two started with Previsions and the stage version is more amusing than its counterpart in the film. I liked the parade of Previsions and would like to see more of them. The more perverse the better.
The Stunt C*ck scene worked very well and it is too bad the ensemble member who played Schlong was not identified in program and for the other roles he played. I thought he stood out among the ensemble players.
The stage version of Eunice is written somewhat different from the film and I liked changes made for the character. Robin Shelby did a good job. She has her own song; different from the film version
Harrison White was great as Dick Davis and I am glad to see that they are going to write more material for him. Some members were screaming with laughter with all the song ditties he came up with.
What can I say about Alet Taylor? This is the third show that I have seen her that Bruce has done (What If? & The Brain From Planet X are the other two) She is so good. She can take any material and run with it. I wish she had other songs to sing. I love her!!
What else??
Barry Pearl who played Eddie did a fun job and the character is better developed in the stage version than the movie. There needs to be a character who is the stumbling block from Harry succeeding. Eddie is that character.
Perhaps he needs to be more of a comic villain. I would like to see him throw in more pitfalls so Harry won’t succeed, but Harry still does. I also liked the running gag of Eddie's visions of what business he would put in the mall instead of the studio.
Oh yes. I liked that Rosie sings in Let Them Eat Cake.
And I do miss I Don't Have To Hide Anymore. (The end title song in the film) but sadly it doesn't fit into this version.
I am looking forward to seeing the next reading in NYC and see where it goes to next.
I really liked it. I had a good time. My friends enjoyed and the audience around me seemed to like it to judging by the applause and laughter.
So to all the NYCers and nearby residents come see it when it comes to NYC next fall

Just wanted to wish everyone a really wonderful weekend. ;)
And a very happy Friday. ;)
-
Too exhausted, so I must be errant and truant for one more week.
Am just now down to the closet full on camera stuff. Oh, and the closet full of car stuff. And the work bench/desk full of tooling. Then all I have to do is hire someone to haul the rest away and turn in the apartment keys. Yea.
-
Peace, love, and happiness.
Good night all.
-
DR Sam - Be sure to "treat" yourself to a break every now and then over the next week or so. Your body, mind and soul will appreciate it.

Is this "Presidents I have known and loved"?
-
Death Masks:
In roughly bottom-to-top, left-to-right order, the faces in this photo belong to:
On the ledge: Abraham Lincoln, Laurence Barrett, Sir Richard Owen, Robert E. Lee, John C. Calhoun, William Tecumseh Sherman
The bottom six hanging on the wall: Ludwig van Beethoven, Antonio Canova, John Keats, Hyrum Smith, Joseph Smith, Jean-Paul Marat
The next highest six: Franz Liszt, Napoleon Bonaparte (well, maybe), Frederick the Great, George Washington, William Blake, Oliver Cromwell
The next highest five: Jeremy Bentham, Aaron Burr, Friedrich Nietzsche, Edward Kean, Ulysses S. Grant
And the top row: Jonathan Swift, Maria Malibran, David Garrick, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Moore.
OK. I hadn't read far enough. Interesting grouping.

Page 7 dance!!! ;D

Here's my contribution:
LOVELY!!!
-
Thanks for the detailed review, Michael!

Well... Since tomorrow is supposed to be a relative dry and rain-free day, my plan is to take advantage of that fact, and spend a good chunk of it outside. And I'm still toying with the idea of heading down to the Apple Store to wait in line with my friend. In any case... Sleep would be a good thing regardless.
Goodnight.

Thanks, Michael. Just for clarity sake - the little musical prologue is called The Porno Business. "I Don't Need Fireworks" is actually titled Simply. Even though written for the stage Nudie, I also used it in What If.

bk, are the Dancing Dildo's in the stage production. That song is infectious and dangerous as it's something you can't go around singing in public (even by accident!)
-
Yes, Dancing Dildos ends act one.
