Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both dazed AND confused, and now it is time for you to post until the dazed and confused cows come home - they're so confused that they're off beating a dead horse.
-
And the word of the day is: FRESS!
-
Fress to impress
-
BK, last night, you wrote:
Last Saturday, I happened to pick up four bound volumes of Films In Review, a magazine I used to have a complete collection of. I probably still have some in storage (I have no idea WHAT I have in storage anymore). The bound volumes were for years 1954 and 1955, 1963 and 1965. I've been going through them and it is fascinating to read contemporary reviews of films we now think of as classics and also to read some rave reviews from film that we generally think of as dogs. The film music columns are most interesting, and would infuriate people reading them today.
But, most interesting of all was one particular fellow who reviewed several films in the 1954 issues. I was actually shocked when I saw the byline. I will reveal who it is in the notes - I will only say that the person has gone on to incredible acclaim.
And then you wrote:
No one wants to guess who the reviewer was?
And then I guessed: Johnny Carson...it was a total guess. Well, BK, who wrote the reviews in the 1954 Films In Review??
-
You didn't mention it in your notes. ::)
-
But you were dazed and confused, so I can totally understand. :)
-
You didn't mention it in your notes. ::)
Took the words right out of my mouth!
der Brucer
-
I meant to mention it in the notes, damn it all. The reviewer was not Johnny Carson. It was a young man named Steve Sondheim.
-
That's how he signed his reviews - Steve Sondheim. He reviewed two Hitchcock films, Dial M For Murder and Rear Window, and On The Waterfront, where he praises the score of Leonard Bernstein.
-
Wow...your close and personal friend! I knew that he'd written crossword puzzles, but didn't know about the reviews.
-
Other than praising Bernstein's score, did he like the movies?
-
Was he right??

Our first video player/recorder was neither Beta nor VHS format. It was made by Phillips - the Dutch company . The "Spools" for the video top were on top of each other rather than side by side. We used the video machine for quite a few years. It's picture resolution was far better than the other systems. With the competition from other formats it lost out and, as far as I know, did not ever have pre-recorded video tapes available. That would have been about 1976.
When we eventually purchased a VHS recorder I transfered many of the recorded TV shows to "new" format. I suspect the first prerecorded tape I purchased would have been a Disney feature. (maybe "Alice in Wonderland").
-
Well, I must wait for an answer. I'm off to bed. Good night, everyone.
-
Goodnight George and Ron.
-
Here I sit....almost ready to jump back into bed.
I was in bed at midnight. I've been up about 35 minutes. Couldn't breathe.
The air is warm and still, pollens waft idly, but still they waft.
I've done steam, I've done tea, and I've done nasal rinse. I took an allergy tab one-half hour before going to bed.
I hate not being able to get comfy in bed. I'd turn on a fan, but that would just stir the pollens even more.
Sigh.
-
I know whereof BK speaks about Films In Review and the music reviews of the 1960s.
The critic, Page Cook, never hesitated to declare someone a hack. This generally occurred when someone not formally trained (classically, that is) was assigned to write a film score and peppered the film with nonsensical band riffs and forgettable pop songs.
Of course, Cook was pretty harsh on newcomers and new "scoring" styles that today are nearly worshipped (John Barry springs to mind...the James Bond scores, Born Free, The Lion in Winter).
The pop-style were mostly nonsensical in terms of supporting the film....which wasn't their intent at all ...but in today's terms, they're deemed classic scores by some.
I bought not a few "pop" scores in the 1960s and 1970s because of some piece of music or other that I really loved.
None of them are in the same league as, say, Elmer Bernstein's "To Kill A Mockingbird" or Jerome Moross' "The War Lord"....or even Frank Skinner's "Shenandoah"....not as scores meant to support/enhance the film...or to heighten emotional responses.
I've got boxes full of LPs bought in "cut-out bins" that were from those times...and from those non-formally trained musicians. They're in storage. For whatever reason, I thought I might one day develop an appreciation for them...or at least be able to sell them.
And that might still happen...the selling, that is.
:D
-
Good night, Tom.
-
Alone.
That's what I am.
Sigh.
-
I guess I need to be off to bed, as well.
I have work in 6.5 hours.
-
I went to bed too late and got up too early.
-
Good morning. It's supposed to be a lovely late winter day in New York City.
No, Edi, Anthony is no relation (that we know) to the Morelli involved in the S/V case.
When he has googles himself he finds some references to him but also many articles about a college football player with the same name and also a small-time gangster of the same name.
-
Here I am all alone. Where are the early morning denizens? I have to begin work and there is no one here to keep me company before I begin the journey down the printout of life.
-
Au revoir
-
TOD:
A VHS. I don't remember which VHS tape was the first. I rented more than bought because back then they were "priced to rent" in other words they were about one hundred dollars a copy.
Chose VHS because we bought a used machine.
never watched a film in BETA. Even though I understand it was superior method.
-
AND NOW
we have a similar competition between two HD formats. BLUE RAY & HD (?). Which one is better? Which one release more films?
-
Good morning, all! I managed to drag myself out of bed by 7:30, but my body insists that it's really 6:30 AM. I knew that Steve had done reviews for the magazine; I can't remember if he told me or I read it - perhaps in Meryle Secrest's book? - but it seemed to be part of a topic of the years when he was writing TOPPER and looking for work.
Today I have reports to write, a discussion with the estate lawyer, a discussion with a banker in West Chester, OH, about one of my dad's accounts, and a short jaunt to carry out some errands. Hopefully, I'll get the CD's of THE BRAIN I've been waiting for today, so I can do some promotion in the next few days.
TOD: In 1988, I scored STRIKE UP THE BAND for California Music Theatre and made a nice bundle of money, part of which I used to buy a new tv and VHS recorder. I cannot remember the first tape - although I clearly remember my first CD - but I'm 90% certain it was cheap porn.
-
Good Morning! It is so nice to be almost completely over this cold and be able to sleep all night. But, I must get going or I will be late....
-
So where might you be moving Mr. Moore? Will it still be close to us so we can come visit you if the mood strikes us?
-
AND NOW
we have a similar competition between two HD formats. BLUE RAY & HD (?). Which one is better? Which one release more films?
This is why both formats are courting the porn industry. Porn makers chose the VHS format, thus killing BETA.

Any recommendations for a cheapish hotel around Union Square? I think instead of Times Square we might try to stay near the Quad theatre in the village.
Thanks!
-
I watched the David Hyde Pierce interview; it was just coming on when I got home from work, so thanks for mentioning it, Cillaliz.
He was good, but hardly got to talk about CURTAINS at all. Made me miss Johnny Carson, and reminded me why I don't watch Conan.
-
Good Morning!
-With the theatre conference last week, and my normally non-standard, non-regular sleeping schedule, I really don't think I'm "feeling" DST this year. However, I usually seem to feel it more in the fall since it always seems to seem "so early" for a couple of days.
In any case, I'm up. My oatmeal has been consumed, and I'm sipping another cup of Throat Coat Tea. -My throat and sinuses, etc. feel almost back to normal this morning. (Whew!) -And now that I think of it, with all the A/C in the hotel in Atlanta, it had to be one of the driest hotels I've ever stayed in. I tended to wake up every morning quite parched.
-
Good Morning, DR Ben.
-
Good Morning, DR Michael S. -How are things in Florida? Any trips back to Montreal planned?
-
Good Morning, DR elmore. -Do you remember the first cheap porn you bought? -And it was it really that cheap? ;)
-
Good Morning, DR edisaurus. Hmmm.... An almond croissant would go nicely with my tea right now... ;)
As for a hotel around Union Square... The only one that comes right to mind is the W, which is most definitely not cheap. There are some smaller ones a few blocks over in Chelsea. I've had some friends who've stayed at the Chelsea Pines, and they liked it, and said the rates weren't too bad. With the Spring Break and spring tourist season about to kick in, I'd probably just check out Frommer's, and start going down the list of hotels and seeing what's available.
-
Oh, porn back then was not cheap!!! Not that I know, all my knowledge about that comes from my friends ;)
There are not many hotels around Union Square. There is the W on 17th Street and Park Avenue South but it ain't cheap.
There are some B&Bs in the neighborhood but they are not low-priced either.
Here is a link to a place on 20th Street which charges $119 a night for a double
Chelsea Lodge (http://www.chelsealodge.com/)
Here is another link to a place on 17th Street
Chelsea Inn (http://www.chelseainn.com/)
Guest rooms: $89.00 - $139.00+tax
Studio: $139.00 to $179.00+tax
Suite $159.00 to $229.00 +tax
Two room Suite: $199.00 to $279.00+tax
(Tax of 13.375% and 3.50 per room per night not included)
I've walked past it many times. It's near Splash so you could meet Jose there ;)
-
Oh, btw, Good Morning back to Jose.
-
Seems we were on the same wave regarding low-cost accomodations in Union Square.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
For some reason, I'm thinking my father had bought a Beta and a VHS - or maybe someone gave us one or the other. -I just seemed to recall coming across some Beta tapes in storage once. However, VHS ended up being the main format for our household. And the second VCR player we had, that JVC model with the big colorful buttons and the "pop-up" loading tray, lasted quite a long time. I took it with me to college, and it survived to my junior year!

Well, since I've only go to Splash on Monday nights... -And I really don't think I've ever gone there on any other night of the week. (Which probably has more to do with the cover charge later in the week for their theme nights.)
-
Seems we were on the same wave regarding low-cost accomodations in Union Square.
Hmm...
I just checked the website for Chelsea Pines Inn (http://www.chelseapinesinn.com/).
It seems they've just finished a major renovation. And although I don't see it directly stated on their site, it seems the Chelsea Pines is considered a "Gay Guesthouse", but I'm guessing that also means that they're "hetero-friendly". ;)
-
OK... Time for me to wash my oatmeal bowl and get ready to head out. There's WiFi down at the rehearsal studio, so I should be checking in during the lunch break today.
Laters...

So where might you be moving Mr. Moore? Will it still be close to us so we can come visit you if the mood strikes us?
I do not know. We're looking for a new space as I type this.

TOD:
I believe I bought my first VCR in January, 1984. It was a Panasonic VHS top loading model and it lasted me clear up until 2001. I had originally bought it for the sole purpose of taping the RSC's NICHOLAS NICKLEBY on PBS. I still have those tapes, even though I long ago purchased the DVD set.
I can't recall what was my first purchased VHS movie. Most probably it was a Disney animation--they were pretty much the first to offer the priced-to-buy videos. Likewise, I can't remember what was my first rental, though I'm pretty sure that THE BIG CHILL was among the first few.
I can definitely recall my first DVDs--CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, THE MATRIX, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and SOUTH PARK THE MOVIE--all Christmas gifts given to me by my family even though I did not yet have a DVD player.
-
My first VCR was bought from Crazy Eddie's on East 57th Street in 1986. They assured me it would be easy to hook up. I found that it wasn't so easy to hook up.
-
Good mornin', all!
I'm dazed and confused...my browser won't allow me to view today's column...keeps reverting to yesterday's. Even though I refresh.
I had a rehearsal last night, so just now catching up on everything.
Thank you, DR Sandra and DR DearReaderLaura, for those fabulous photos yesterday...sitting here at my desk, it's almost like taking a mini-vacation!
-
My first VCR was bought from Crazy Eddie's on East 57th Street in 1986. They assured me it would be easy to hook up. I found that it wasn't so easy to hook up.
And our first VCR was purchased from Crazy Eddie's on Sixth Avenue and Eighth Street in 1984. I don't remember the first tape we bought. Videos were incredibly expensive in the early 80s. I remember tapes costing $80 and $90. Too much money for this starving actor.
-
My first VCR was purchased at Wall-To-Wall Sound (it was just called Wall-To-Wall Sound then, not yet Wall-To-Wall Sound and Video) for over $400.00! It's tuner only included channels 2 through 13, so if I was taping through those channels I could still watch another station. But if I wanted to tape something "on cable" (channels 14 through 99), I would have to do some cable switching in the back of the TV and would have to watch whatever I was taping.
Is it any wonder why I love my Tivo?
-
DR JoseSPiano, on which unreleased cast album did you star as Keyboard III?
Inquiring minds want to know...

**FEEL BETTER** vibes to DR Ron Pulliam
-
My favorite video rental place back then was Movies Unlimited. And they certainly lived up to their name--they had everything[\i]! And if by some chance they didn't have it, they would special order it for you, even if you just wanted to rent it.
-
DR Cillaliz, thanks for your reports on La Mancha. There's a "revisionist" touring production in New Haven, CT right now that's getting some interesting [read: peculiar] reviews.
One time when I was playing Don Quixote - fortunately, it was only a dress rehearsal - our Aldonza went to get a drink at a nearby water fountain and got locked out of the backstage area, missing her next entrance. I was stranded onstage, and had to improvise for 3 or 4 minutes while the stage manager figured out what had happened. It seemed like an eternity. It was the section leading up to "Dulcinea," so her presence was kind of required for us to continue the scene! I can tell you, I was not feeling very gazelle-like at that moment!
-
Tuesday morning greetings! It's supposed to get up in the 70's here today, which is about 20o above normal and not supposed to last.
TOD - our first experience with video (both cameras and players) involved equipment that DH Richard was allowed to borrow from the school district. We made videotapes of DS Rob's first and second birthdays and several years ago I became hysterical upon discovering that the first one had been taped over. I have now hidden the tape of the second birthday, which is the one I'd have saved anyway, if I'd been made to choose.
-
And the word of the day is: FRESS!
Fess Parker, an actor of note of yore, is now a winemaker.
His twin brother, Fress Parker, took a stab at running a delicatessen, but couldn't resist eating all the profits.

Just before I woke this morning, I was dreaming.
I dreamt that I was watching 30 Minute Meals with Rachael Ray, but it wasn't RaeRay hosting the show. RaeRay was being played by Leslie Uggams!
She had all of RaeRay's bits and phrases down pat, I hand her that. "Now, isn't that cool!"
-
That's how he signed his reviews - Steve Sondheim. He reviewed two Hitchcock films, Dial M For Murder and Rear Window, and On The Waterfront, where he praises the score of Leonard Bernstein.

This could give "Blue" Ray a whole different meaning!

a propos yesterday's TOD:
I don't want to stir up a whole can of worms. I am thinking we eschew the whole cast recording verus soundtrack debate here?
-
First LaserDiscs -
Fantasia and Star Wars. We had to get something to play on that newfangled equipment, y'know.
Most of our LaserDisc collection has been replaced with DVDs by this time, but we still have a few that are in the older format. And der B recently bought an LD of The Ritz, which apparently is not yet on DVD.
("I'd like a room, please." ;D)

What we eschew is making the people who make the error feel like idiots. We're nicer than that.
-
DR Adriana Patti, check your email!
-
And, with that, I must get ready for work.
Beautiful day outside. Walking to the store is going to be a pleasure.
So nice to be able to walk to work.
-
Good morning!
Gorgeous day here, and it's going to be at least 75 today, so I'm thinking spring is unofficially here. (Going to be 80 tomorrow according to the newspaper.)
-
AND NOW
we have a similar competition between two HD formats. BLUE RAY & HD (?). Which one is better? Which one release more films?
In the cases where the same film has been released on both formats - THE DEPARTED, for example - there appears to be no difference in quality whatsoever. Some have different audio mixes, but the visual quality is exactly the same.
Blu-ray will release more films because every major studio except Universal supports the format.
HD-DVD is supported only by Universal, Warners, Paramount, and (the indie studio) Weinstein Company.
This is why I chose Blu-ray. With only one studio excluded (for now) from its line-up, it seemed a no-brainer to me.
-
Kissing up, was he?
I wouldn't say so. That jazzy score is one of the greats and very unusual compared to the more classical movie scores of the same period.
-
My first VCR was an RCA Selectavision with the big colored buttons, a dial tuner on the front for switching channels, and the remote could only pause the tape or start it again.
My first VHS purchase was VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Along with Disney, Fox's videotape arm of the company was called Magnetic Video, and they sold inexpensive tapes of some of their hits. They were pan and scan copies, of course, but it was better than nothing.
Blank tapes were horrendously expensive back then: $15 a tape. I bought a case of tapes so I'd have enough to tape movies I loved. Buying by the case lowered the cost per tape to about $10.
-
Since I didn't record any television programs last night, I'll be DVDing it today until the beginning of the AMERICAN IDOL finals tonight.
First up with be the 1948 THE THREE MUSKETEERS. Not the best version of the story, but I've read reviews that praised the Technicolor transfer to the skies so I'm anxious to see it.
I have one more disc in the LAW & ORDER: CI second season set, and I may put it in later today as well to finish up that box.
-
In our very poor days right after we were married, the middle-aged neighbors upstairs (who were worse off financially than we were, if that is possible) spent about $1500 on a vcr. I thought that was fascinating -- you could record a show off tv and watch it later. Wow.
We bought a beta machine because my DH said they had better quality. Maybe so, but it was hard to find tapes, and then it was impossible to find tapes.
The first one we rented was Disney's Pinnochio, because my DS loved "Yo-ko-key-yo." The rental contract said if we lost or damaged it, the replacement charge would be $80. I was very on-edge until we got it safely returned.
-
Thank you, MShayne, for your answer about Chinchy Bassa. Chincy Bassa is my favorite naughty phrase, which I have been using a lot lately. I was sure I didn't make it up, but I couldn't find it in the movie, so I was confused.

Speaking of Dazed and Confused, I remember being disappointed by DAZED AND CONFUSED, the movie. It was supposed to be a film that finally covered my particular high school years, but I found nothing in it that I could relate to. It raised no feelings of nostalgia for me.

Many thanks.
What is it about warm weather, when the air is loaded with pollen, that brings out the worst in cologne and perfume application?
There are some folks here who seemingly poured a bottle of whatever they had all over their bodies.
You cannot escape it.
I may have to go home to make a point.

I won the Festival of Emerging American Playwrights competition in May, 1985. The play is titled "My Hand Is Not My Heart".
I received $500 from the theatre that was producing it. In two checks of $250.
When I got the first one in June - I went to HH GREGG and bought a lovely new Sylvania VCR with a remote on a cord.
It was wonderful to be able to program my own schedule. One of the first videos I purchased was ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN which I just happened to see at a video store....original price $39.95 marked down to $19.95. I still have said KEY Video.
-
Perfume usually doesn't bother me - with one exception:
CHER - which smelled like bug spray to me!

Yes, Betty's passing was finally picked up by the mainstream press.
It seems she wanted it announced at a specific time by a specific person, her executor Carlos...and he will do so this afternoon.

The three Sondheim-written reviews are all positive, with a couple of caveats. He clearly loves Hitchcock.

TOD:
I took over the payments a friend's VCR...$400...this was around 1986 or so.
First movie I purchased was BRIDE OF THE GORILLA starring Miss Barbara Payton. We sold it at Bi-Mart, where I worked at the time.
-
I bought THE ILLUSIONIST today along with UNITED 93 - both on sale at the local BLOCKBUSTER STORE.
-
The clocks on the school computers are not reset...
-
We had loads of vhs tapes until we moved to hollywood 4 years ago, where we replaced most with dvd or just got rid of movies we no longer liked.

I always thought of BRIDE OF THE GORILLA as a Raymond Burr movie, but I guess that would look funny on the marquee:
Raymond Burr - Bride of the Gorilla
-
DR SWW - I liked your proboscis song last night.
-
I like the time change, I feel more awake when I wake up.
-
The plural of proboscis is proboscises, not probosci.
Isn't that silly?
-
I bought THE ILLUSIONIST today along with UNITED 93
Not Shortbus? :)
-
Another synonym for proboscis is a brody.
-
I like the time change.
What say you, bk? Does she need to be strung up by her thumbs, too?
-
Yes, she needs to be strung up by her thumbs. And to be clear (as much as I can be clear when I'm clearly dazed and confused), I don't mind the time change when it occurs in April. I mind it occuring a month early.
-
That is clear! Though technically, isn't it just 2 weeks early? I think the total extension is one month; 2 weeks on either end of the original period.
-
I have no meetings or chairsides scheduled for this afternoon; therefore, my luncheon salad shall contain a plethora of raw red onion.
I'm just sayin'.
-
The context of the word "proboscis" that I used with the girls is that it is a butterfly's tongue.
-
I have no meetings or chairsides scheduled for this afternoon; therefore, my luncheon salad shall contain a plethora of raw red onion.

LOL
I suppose if you want to keep chinchy bassas away on any given day, you could eat the same thing.
-
DR DearReaderLaura-
Do you [or a neighbor] have a butterfly garden planted, or are your photos just the result of happy circumstance? :)
-
And that's a good thing. (A Brain reference).
-
DR DearReaderLaura-
Do you [or a neighbor] have a butterfly garden planted, or are your photos just the result of happy circumstance? :)
I am trying to get one started; I have planted lots of stuff the last couple of weeks, hoping that something will grow.
The photos from yesterday were from the butterfly exhibit at the botanical garden. But I have lots of stuff that should bring butterflies to my yard. I had some success last fall by planting passionvine for the caterpillars. I have a chrysalis now that should be emerging soon.
-
I also go to the arboretum and other hiking and bore these kind folks with my photos. They are all very good sports about it. I don't go to the movies, so I have little else to contribute.
-
And now, I must go to the bank.
-
Will we never get to page six?
-
If I remember correctly, daylight savings time usually started in mid-to late April but I'm sure der Brucer would know exactly.
-
I have little else to contribute.
I beg to differ! :D
-
The plural of proboscis is proboscises, not probosci.
Isn't that silly?
Well, it's a Greek plural and not a Latin one. Jast as the plural of octopus is octopoi not octopi, since it's a Greek derivation. Makes grammatical sense to me. But, then, I was a Classics major.
-
Will we never get to page six?
Never.
Well...it's possible.
Perhaps if I relay a really bad joke, time will pass and page 6 will occur:
Two Jewish men, Sid and Al, were sitting in a Mexican restaurant. Sid asked Al, "Are there any people of our faith born and raised in Mexico ?"
Al replied, "I don't know, let's ask our waiter." When the waiter came by, Al asked him, "Are there any Mexican Jews?"
The waiter said, "I don't know Senor, I'll ask the cooks." He returned from the kitchen in a few minutes and said "No sir, no Mexican Jews."
Al wasn't really satisfied with that and asked, "Are you absolutely sure?"
The waiter, realizing he was dealing with "Gringos" gave the expected answer, "I will check again, Senor!" and went back into the kitchen.
While the waiter was away, Sid said, "I find it hard to believe that there are no Jews in Mexico. Our people are scattered everywhere."
The waiter returned and said "Senor, the head cook said there is no Mexican Jews."
"Are you certain?" Al asked once again. "I can't believe there are no Mexican Jews!"
"Senor, I ask EVERYONE," replied the exasperated waiter, "All we have is Orange Jews, Prune Jews, Tomato Jews, and Grape Jews."

Oy! I have been tied up with estate issues for the past 3 hours! Phone calls and emails to brothers, sister-in-law, attorney, life insurance company, Butler County Auditor, father's bank in Florida. Time for some gin, and not the card game.

Yes, Betty's passing was finally picked up by the mainstream press.
It seems she wanted it announced at a specific time by a specific person, her executor Carlos...and he will do so this afternoon.
I hope she left those lousy kids of hers a big fat surprise in her will.
-
I have no meetings or chairsides scheduled for this afternoon; therefore, my luncheon salad shall contain a plethora of raw red onion.
I'm just sayin'.
DR SINGDAW, what is your day job--if you don't mind telling?
-
I was a Classics major.
And one for Togas!
DR Elmore3003, I don't really mean to be flip. Now that I am older and wiser, I truly wish I had studied Latin when I was younger - and my brain could readily absorb such things.
-
No problem, DR Jeanne.
I work for a company that outsources Human Resource functions for other companies - payroll, policy consulting, benefits administration, expense reimbursement, tax issues, etc. Specifically, I work with people that are being relocated or transfered internationally due to new assignments, to assist them with the logistics involved [shipment of household goods, temporary accommodations, home finding, trailing spouse career counseling, language lessons, etc.]. It's kind of niche, but every day is new and different!

I keep thinking that we might, perhaps, soon have a report from DR JoseSPiano...

I made it a point to ask the counter girl at SaladWorks to add some feta to my Spensa salad. In fact, I said it twice, because she asked me to repeat my order. In double fact, she then asked, "With feta?" to which I replied, "Yes, with feta."
Now ask me if there was any feta in my Spensa salad.
-
It's a feta complit.
Someone had to say it.
-
Penance for the joke:
Layered Italian Casserole
1 lb. ground chuck 1 teaspoon Rosemary
1/2 cup chopped onion 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
2 garlic cloves, minced 8 oz. cooked and drained spiral pasta or spaghetti
2 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce 3 tablespoons chopped parsley
1-1/2 cups ricotta (or cottage) cheese 1 teaspoon oregano
8 oz. grated mozzarella cheese 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Brown beef, onion and garlic in skillet. Drain off any fat. Stir in tomato sauce, parsley, oregano, rosemary and Italian seasoning. Cook 5 minutes.
In a 9 x 13 deep pan, layer pasta, meat sauce, ricotta or cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese, and top with the Parmesan cheese. If you use spaghetti, be sure to cut it in smaller pieces for easy serving.
Bake 30 minutes.

Back from a jog and will now finish addressing packages, although I've been informed CDs won't be here until Friday.
-
Now ask me if there was any feta in my Spensa salad.
I hate it when that happens!
-
Ah, now there's the way to an H/K's heart...
Food!

What is it about warm weather, when the air is loaded with pollen, that brings out the worst in cologne and perfume application?
Plain old physics - the warmer weather makes the perfumes aromatic esters evaporate faster and they form a denser cloud.

Actually, four weeks total, three at the front, one at the rear.

Singdaw-Keith & I made many a corporate move, so I have some idea of what you do. I’m sure your work is greatly appreciated.

There is not too much new on tv this week. But i am curious will anybody be trying either of the 2 new shows on this week?
I think they are both thursday at 10pm. RAINES seems to be some sort of a police/psychic show. And the other is OCTOBER something (road maybe) with the girl from THAT 70s show. I believe the former is also being repeated friday at 10pm.
I know that LOST is new tomorrow. And I am pretty sure MEDIUM is a repeat. But I think UGLY BETTY will be new on thursday. Hard to follow!
-
Again, the building where I work is so hot. I may faint.
Is there a fainting couch in the ladies lounge?
-
I began my afternoon with the 1948 MGM version of THE THREE MUSKETEERS. It's entertaining if a trifle slow in spots. No, DR Elmore, Constance does indeed die in this version.
The transfer is a mix of good and bad. It's sharp and relatively clean. I didn't notice any spotting or speckling, but there were a couple of errant hairs that made their way onto the frame. And the Warner technicians obviously turned down the vibrancy of the color. I had to open the menu on my TV and dial up the color a couple of notches to get the richness I wanted (didn't have to do that with SINGIN' IN THE RAIN or ROBIN HOOD, that's for sure).
-

Yes, it is OCTOBER ROAD. After reading about it this morning, I have no interest in it. RAINES is a mystery so even though Jeff Goldblum is not especially a favorite of mine, I will watch it. Sounds like there will be a bit of GHOST WHISPERER to it.
Both of them have already filmed their episodes and are here only for a limited run.
Neither has gotten very good reviews from the ones I've read.
-
Is there a fainting couch in the ladies lounge?
As a matter of fact, there is, DR Ron Pulliam! I decided, instead of fainting, to eat my last 3 coffee-flavored Hershey's dark chocolate kisses.
-
Probly from Gene Kelly's moustache!
Or from his chest! When we first see him, his shirt is open, and he has a maginficent hairy chest. Later in the film, when he strips off his shirt, his chest has been shaven clean. Bah!

No, Jeff Goldblum ("Raines") may just be my least favorite actor EVER.
As for "October Road", I find it rather pretentious that any town would have a road named "October", and one of the previews has some idiot declaring, "Just remember which side of October Road you came from."
Ho-hum. Almost as mindnumbing as "Dawson's Creek".
-
Copper fennel is easy to grow, perennial and a host plant for butterflies. If I can't kill it, "it's a good thing".
I put out some dill. I should throw some fennel seed out, too.
-
Next, I put in the James Bond film YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. I haven't seen it in a long time, so I thought I'd check out the transfer, especially since Amazon is offering a sale today of all four Bond sets for 65% off. A great deal (comes to about $6 a movie for each two disc set), but I don't need to replace any of the Roger Moore ones, and the sets scramble the various Bonds around in them. You can't buy JUST the Coinnerys or the Daltons.
-
Or from his chest! When we first see him, his shirt is open, and he has a maginficent hairy chest. Later in the film, when he strips off his shirt, his chest has been shaven clean. Bah!
The difference between the peasant D'Artagnan and the newly civilized D'Artagnan?
I couldn't get past the first 30 minutes of the movie. The excessive sword fighting they foisted upon us with Kelly and the mickeymousing of Herbert Stothart's stodgy score (surely one of the scores that gave him a bad rep) had me scrambling for the remote.
-
And where might that be found?
I don't rightly know. My momma sent it to me.
-
As a matter of fact, there is, DR Ron Pulliam! I decided, instead of fainting, to eat my last 3 coffee-flavored Hershey's dark chocolate kisses.
There's a plan! And it's much more enjoyable than fainting in the "ladies'"!

-
Or from his chest! When we first see him, his shirt is open, and he has a maginficent hairy chest. Later in the film, when he strips off his shirt, his chest has been shaven clean. Bah!
That thud you heard was DR MBarnum swooning.
-
Anyway, when I put in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, I had to go back into the TV menu to dial the color back down as it made everyone look like they had burnt skin.
I know the new Bond transfers have cleaned up a lot of the dirt and damage that was just ported over from earlier transfers. This film does have lots of black dirt specks, and the process work is especially grainy and ugly looking.
Still, I'm going to hold out for Blu-ray versions of the Connerys even though it'll be a year or two before they come out. I can make do with what I've got until then.
-
According to the UPS "tracking" system, my copy of "Casino Royale" is "out for delivery".

I always thought it was his Broadway writing that got Stothart the bum rep.
-
I clearly have to see it again! Why do I remember their rescuing her before Milady does her in?
They're clearly trying to get there in time, and the suspense is pretty well done by George Sidney, but they don't make it.

And I'm off! I have a date with my friend Val. She and I are going to see ZODIAC. It will be nice to see her and gossip about life at Barnes & Noble.
-
According to the UPS "tracking" system, my copy of "Casino Royale" is "out for delivery".
I just got my shipping notice from Amazon today for the Blu-ray version. That means I can't expect it until at least Friday, and possibly not even this week depending on what the mailman feels like carrying.

Was that during the "Thou Swell" number with the Blackburn twins?

JURY REJECTS NEW YORK TEACHER'S CLAIM THAT SCHOOL FIRED HER FOR BEING A WITCH
Tuesday , March 13, 2007
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. —
The jurors never fell under her spell.
A Long Island teacher who said she was fired from her job because administrators mistakenly thought she was a witch was powerless to do anything Tuesday as a jury rejected her claim and her $2 million lawsuit.
...
The school district claimed its decision came because Berrios did not get along with co-workers, had a condescending attitude and conjured stories about phantom injuries to her son. Her attorney, John Ray, said in opening statements that Berrios was a victim of prejudice from her school's principal, Andrew Albano, a born-again Christian.
Albano fired her after deciding that Berrios was a witch, according to Ray. Defense attorney Steven Stern told the jurors that Berrios had told co-workers about visiting a coven meeting, but was not fired for being a witch.
Instead, Stern said, she was a bizarre "storyteller" who fabricated tales that her husband was involved in a plane crash, and that her 2-year-old son lost his fingers in a VCR accident.
Berrios now works as a teacher in the Atlanta area.
Well, I guess NY's loss is Atlanta's gain!

Well, it's a Greek plural and not a Latin one. Jast as the plural of octopus is octopoi not octopi, since it's a Greek derivation. Makes grammatical sense to me. But, then, I was a Classics major.

Once again I couldn’t go for my daily constitution. Last year I read that burning was going to become illegal. Well, it hasn’t happened. There is so much smoke outside, blowing in the direction of our house, if I exercise and inhale that stuff I won’t be able to breath.
I’m grumpy now and feeling out of sorts.

Watching some of the DVD's I purchased today.
THE SQUID AND THE WHALE - okay....
THE ILLUSIONIST - okay....just for me, I don't find Edward Norton all that good looking OR talented....haven't since that BIG IMPORTANT role that so many critics said was breath-taking, etc....
Getting ready to watch ALL THE KINGS MEN - a unnecessary remake, but maybe interesting....at least I thought so until I saw the name of one of the Executive Producers. If it becomes too much of a rant of HIS kind, I won't finish watching.

So... It was a good first day back at rehearsal. And since I was just there last week for the first "meet and greet", it truly was like the first day of rehearsal for me. We started off the day with another "meet and greet" since the rest of the ensemble came in today. It's a great group of Broadway vets and Broadway babies.
After the designer presentations, I retired to the "office" with the assistant conductor, and we went through the show. Whew! Thankfully, since it's a Kander & Ebb show, once a number starts, it basically just goes from there - no major tempo changes to worry about, nothing too tricky. Of course, there are still a lot of notes to keep track of, but I did pretty well playing along while Jim (Laev) conducted. And then after lunch, I played for the blocking rehearsals while Patrick continued with the music in the other room.
*And my familiarity - and love(!) - of the original play really came in handy today too. :)
-
As I see now you guessed!
Ah.....yes....the uninitiated still call it "a guess." 8)
I did both just to be safe. :P 8)

Well DRJOSE, I suppose somebody has to like it....and you and DR ELMORE are champions who may - MAY - make me change my mind.
I started reading it again last week - but didn't get past the dinosaur walking into the living room. The flying scenery did it for me the first time....so at least I got a bit further.
-
DR RLP - I forgot RICHES was on last night....
-
I like the time change, I feel more awake when I wake up.
I like the time change too. Today I got a ton of things done after work. I had yard work to do (clearing up downed limbs from various storms) and several other outdoor things. I also had time to wash the car etc all after work. The extra hour after work is a lot nicer than I thought it would be
-
Forty minutes between posts...incredible.
Blame Jose and daylight savings time coming early.
-
I also had...to wash the car
See, that's what happens when you insist on splashing around in the water out there! ;)
-
How far ahead do you get the music to prepare, or are you truly sight-reading?
Well.. I received a score last week... And then I went to Atlanta... And since about six or seven of the songs had been transposed since last week... And there were four new transitions... So, yes, today I was basically sight-reading.
-
Blame Jose
He does seem to be a favorite scapegoat around here!
-
Will we never get to page ten?
-
So it is spoken, so it shall be done - page twelve.
-
Well DRJOSE, I suppose somebody has to like it....and you and DR ELMORE are champions who may - MAY - make me change my mind.

Well, remember, there's flying scenery in Sunday in the Park with George too - Where's my tree? - so...
You have to make it to the third act. There's a lot more strange stuff that happens during the first two acts - stranger than the dinosaurs. Just keep reading. Even if it's just a page or two a day.
-
I agree. I watched the video production this weekend, not ever having read the play. The third act brings the whole "device" into focus and was rather moving, I thought.
-
Singdaw your response to my use of grumpy made me laugh. I feel somewhat better now.
-
My guess is even Miss Kitt was impressed. Meow! ;D
Well, since I did not have a chance to play while she was in the room today... But soon... However...
During the Meet and Greet, each of us in the room went around and introduced ourself, our name and role. When it came time for Mr. Kitt, she simply stood, turned to the room, and bowed. :)
-
Sounds like a really fun day, Jose.
-
I agree. I watched the video production this weekend, not ever having read the play. The third act brings the whole "device" into focus and was rather moving, I thought.
Exactly. The third act is the most "human" of the acts - and it's meant to be that way.
-
DR singdaw - I'm guessing you watched the Jack O'Brien production with Blair Brown as Sabina?
-
Yes, indeed, DR JoseSPiano.
-
A gentleman who writes a weekly column for the Clarksburg, West Virginia, Exponent-Telegram emailed me a couple of weeks ago. He wanted to use some of the information I used in my online bio of Miss Allison for a column he was devoting to her.
I said of course. He is supposed to send me some clippings of the article. Allison/Mary Jane was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and even though she moved away as an infant back to her mother's hometown of Washington D.C. - West Virginia claims her as their own.
That is way cool! You will let me know when it is out, won't you!!
-
Another interesting tidbit...
Back in the '50s, Eartha Kitt played Sabina in a production of The Skin of Our Teeth at La Jolla Playhouse. Her cast included Dennis Hopper, Cloris Leachman, and James Whitmore.

When what is? ;)
-
Congratulations, JRand56! :)
-
DR edisaurus - and DR Ginny (if you're still looking for hotel rooms) - You may also want to check out the Chelsea Savoy (http://www.chelseasavoynyc.com/page/1amce/home.html). A sportswriter friend of mine stays there frequently when he comes up from Charlottesville. He says the rooms are nice, and if you don't mind not having a window, the interior rooms are a nice bargain. *And since it's on 23rd, you're just a block or two or three from the most of the major train lines.

Color me wussburgered! G'night, all-

Me too.

Really? Back in those days, weren't the classics really just the current bestsellers?
Well, I don't believe I was born when you invented the wheel, so I take your word for it.
-

DR JRand56, a lot of the show was inspired by the Olsen and Johnson HELLZAPOPPIN, and it owes a lot to FINNEGAN'S WAKE, but it cannot be taken - even by 1941 standards of drama - as a well-made play.
Perhaps the best way to approach it is as a Vaudeville history of mankind with a bit of theatre of the absurd and French farce thrown in. The overall framework is sort of NOISES OFF, Act One is basically a French farce about the Ice Age, Act Two a vaudeville olio on the boardwalk of Atlantic City during Noah's Flood, and Act Three a family tragedy set after any major war, perhaps THE TROJAN WOMEN set in a Ringling Brothers 3-ring attraction. To me, the brilliance of the play is that, given all the nonsense and comedy, it's both a great tribute to humanity's continual survival and a moving piece about the human condition, from our peccadilloes and crimes - petty and grand - to our dreams and lofty ambitions.
I'm back from ZODIAC; very long, but quite gripping and well-cast. I liked David Shire's score as well.
-
Hmm.... Very interesting night on "American Idol"...
All I will say for now....
POSSIBLE SPOILER....
THE HAIR?!?!?!?!?!?
-
Oh gosh my eyes are burning. I inhaled some smoke (from my oven) and my eyes have been burning all night. I tried visine and it seemed to help at the time. but gosh do they still hurt.
And no i did not burn down the house. I was making a mini-meatloaf recipe (in muffin tins). And i forgot to put a tray under the muffin tin. It did not seem like there was anyway the meat/sauce would spill over. But somehow it did. And there was smoke. :(
-
I will wait until tomorrow to talk about American Idol.
But there is one person who i have not really cared for until tonight. But wow.
(she was last).
-
DR Jennifer...OW!
-
DR JENNIFER - did your smoke alarm go off?
-
Congratulations, JRand56! :)
;D

DR Jennifer - If you can gently splash some water in your eyes as a sort of eye-wash, that will help. Also be sure to wash the area around your eyes.
And as for the cause of the smoke, unless the beef you were using was extremely lean, I'm guessing some fat spilled out of the muffin tins.
-
Great cast photo there, DR JOSE!!
You and DR ELMORE are very persuasive....and in fact a copy of the television production of the show is on its way to me.
I may watch before I read anymore.
-
I don't remember the book of ALL THE KING'S MEN or the 1949 movie being this boring.....but I could be wrong, and often am.
AND thanks for the CREATURE cd info, MR BK. I think a link will be fine, if you don't sell it on KRITZERLAND, you don't have to buy address labels and envelopes! And that won't cut into your royalties.
Did you tell Miss Cindy Williams that she is soon to be released on CD?
-
I love "Bachelor Bills."

At our house, when (not if) I burn something, before the alarm even goes off, DS's cat Sassy gets agitated and begins squeaking and pacing and searching for DS. She insists that he follow her, and she leads him out the back door to safety.
It's cute to watch. And she couldn't care less about any of the rest of us.

Proboscis:
-
And on that note...
And since I have another full day of rehearsal tomorrow...
And since I'm actually liking having a somewhat leisurely morning before heading out for the day...
Goodnight.
-
I finished YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE when I went back into the den. An enjoyable Bond adventure. In fact, I actually enjoy watching it more than THUNDERBALL which was a much bigger hit.
-
It was Diana Ross night on IDOL, and a few folks did well with Ms. Ross's songs:
Melinda, of course, was the standout again with a shortened version of "Home." Since it's from a Broadway show, naturally I loved it and her. I wish I could have heard her sing the entire song. The build to the end is much more impressive when you have the whole song. Otherwise, it kind of jumps to that end from nowhere.
Jordin, whose praises I've been siniging for weeks, did fine though I thought her head voice was much weaker than her chest voice and the break between the two was too noticeable.
LaKisha's "God Bless the Child" was well sung but had a flat arrangement that did nothing to give the song interest.
I thought Phil was the best of the men with "Make You Love Me." Chris Sligh has a very powerful voice, but he wasted it on a strange arrangement of "Endless Love." They are the two best male singers by far, but that doesn't guarantee them anything in this weird competition this year.
As for the hopeless ones: Brandon forgot the words to "You Can't Hurry Love" (my favorite Supremes song) and stumbled on the melody, too. Haley forgot her words on "Missing You" and she too let her voice wobble off the notes in her panic. And Sanjaya was as hopeless and useless as ever on "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."
Put this kid out of his misery! And I totally blame the judges. He should NEVER have been put in the top 24 in the first place. I refuse to believe there weren't other male singers in the running who had more to offer than this kid. Good lord, he's ridiculous up there.
-
DIRT had a much tamer episode this week and one with some excitement with a group of thugs following Don to keep him from getting the photographs he needs. And we got some background of abuse concerning DOn and his mother, too, this week which also made him the most interesting character on the show.
-
Will we never get to page twelve? SLACKERS!
-
Finished one motion picture on DVD, will now rewrite a bit of what I did today (a little over three pages), then watch another motion picture on DVD.
-
Mr. Kitt?
-
I watched the Marx Bros in A Night At The Opera. What a funny film.
-
I'm a posting slacker and I'm proud of it.
-
Actually, I just have nothing to say tonight, though that's never stopped me before.
-
When i grow up, i wanna be just like Max on GREASE.
:)
-
Interesting how GREASE has become the shorthand for the name of the TV show, and no longer refers to the musical.
-
Will we never get to page twelve? SLACKERS!
Maybe.
-
Can anyone really make out what Frankie Valli is singing in the title song to the GREASE movie?
-
"This is a life of illusion
Wrapped up in trouble laced with confusion
What are we doing here?"
-
What that has to do with the script of GREASE the musical, I'll never know. :)
-
The title song in the GREASE movie is anachronistic anyway: a disco title song in a movie about the rock 'n roll 1950s? Absurd.
-
Off to bed now.
Good night!
-
Good night, Matt!
-
I can't sleep until the page strikes twelve.
-
Did anyone hear, BTW, that Page Davis (sp?) will be taking over the sweet Charity tour?
-
I don't like Trading Spaces as much without her.
-
But since page 12 is nigh
-
Might as well get there
-
I don't care how we got there, but get there we did (almost an Oleta Adams reference)
-
I rewrote a little, added a really fun touch, and wrote another page (four total today). I'm leaving off where I am because I know exactly how the chapter ends and how the next begins.
-
Another synonym for proboscis is a brody.
Really? I'll tell Brody that tomorrow. He'll think it's hilarious.
-
I made it a point to ask the counter girl at SaladWorks to add some feta to my Spensa salad. In fact, I said it twice, because she asked me to repeat my order. In double fact, she then asked, "With feta?" to which I replied, "Yes, with feta."
Now ask me if there was any feta in my Spensa salad.
Was there any feta in your Spensa salad?

Today was not such a good day. The Bucket Chase Gang spent the whole day misbehaving. It was very stressful. Dominick bit Trevor. That is not a good thing.

At least you do not have to go home with them at the end of the day...
-
I dislike it when I begin typing and then realize I am in caps lock mode and have to rewrite the entire paragraph.
I will have to go to bed early tonight so I can get to class ontime and do math problems on the board for extra credit.
-
Can anyone really make out what Frankie Valli is singing in the title song to the GREASE movie?
When did a Barry Gibb lyric ever really make sense? (Robin Gibb's are worse)
-
Well I'm totally frustrated by my wireless router. When I first set it up, I couldn't get it to work as a security enabled system, so I just said heck with it and left it unsecured. Now with new neighbors etc, I decided to make it secure. I'll be damned if I can get it to work. I follow the wizards...but they are about as effective as the Wizard of Oz. So I just reset the router and it's unsecure again. I did notice that I'm picking up 2 security enabled networks, so if everyone else has a wireless network, no one will be using mine....
I did start unplugging it at various times during the day or night just in case someone is using it regularly. It was unplugged during the entire blizzard. If anyone was relying on stealing it, they were in a bad way, lol
-
So if anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it. Maybe I need to download new firmware or something.
-
I guess I could check out the linksys website, it may have the answer to all life's little problems. But they shall wait until tomorrow...
-
I have had a meeting scheduled for Friday in a town very near the lakes, where I used to live for about a week now. Today I got an email from a friend up there asking if there was any way I could possibly go up there for dinner. It's a birthday surprise for another friend. LOL, this is the second time in about 2-3 years I've had a meeting up there and it just happened to be the night of a dinner party.
So I've been invited to spend the night so that wine can be consumed and we can laugh and laugh. I'm really looking forward to it. These are my long time best friends and we haven't spent time together in at least a year or so. What a coincidence, though. I also have a birthday party on Thursday night at the restaurant in the Art Museum. My social life seems to be taking off in leaps and bounds!
-
Now I must sleep. The network is unsecured. Maybe I should say it's open to what may come. I do have a firewall and virus software etc. I'm really not to worried about it in this neighborhood.
-
I don't know what kind of computer you're using. For my Apple Airport Extreme router, I just go into preferences and set a password protection thing and then I'm completely secure.
-
Sleep? We don't need no stinking sleep.
-
Will we never get to page thirteen?
-
Welcome four GUESTS. Who are you people?
-
I finished math homework and am now going to read until I fall asleep.
-
hopefully it will not take me too long to get sleepy.
-
sorry I am not doing more to help move the count along
-
perhaps before bed I will be in a posting mood.
-
Well, unless we get a forty-nine post frenzy in the next fifty-something minutes, this will be our first March day without 400 postings. Not that it really matters, but I blame it on the early time change - it's been a struggle every day since it happened.
-
How can we STILL be on page twelve?
-
People are just sitting there like so much fish.
-
I don't think I have anything to say.
-
wow, still page 12
-
I am not sleepy yet...
-
The book I am reading is getting boring though
-
Too much description, theres a limit on how much you can describe surroundings, and chapter after chapter of environment is not good....I want action!
-
TaDA~
page 13
-
My job here is done
-
Well, I suppose gratuitous post 790 couldn't hurt
-
back to reading, see you folks at the note's posting ceremony- the only place to be at midnight
-
Good luck getting to four hundred posts, you guys. I'm going to sleep.
Good night!
-
Thanks to the recently incessant WUSSBURGERING, no one will be getting to four hundred postings this fine evening. I blame it on the time change. All these people saying, "I like the time change, I feel energy" etc. Well, WHERE'S THE ENERGY? There was more energy pre-time change.
-
heh that was post 365...like days in the year...makes me giggle
-
but then again what doesn't make me giggle
-
Really? Back in those days, weren't the classics really just the current bestsellers?
Indeed not!
We had the Greeks (We know what they were into: self-multilation, denying husbands sex, frogs, eating one's children, pluralizing with "ises", etc.), and the Romans (We know what they were into: fiddling, "M-F"ing, Vestal Virgins, lion feeding, etc.).
