I think I'm gonna get Jersey Mike's tomorrow.  Why not?  One sandwich for lunch, one for dinner and both together will be around 1200 calories, which is fine.

I was in hospital preparing for my surgery: wrist band, hospital gown, gurney, a shot of some tranquilizer to relax me while we waited for surgeon and the operating room to be cleared and sanitized.  The area for the surgery was shaved and a nurse put a mask over my face and told me to breathe deep.  It was another tranquilizing drug that rendered me drowsily conscious but unable to feel anything or speak.  Some nurse prepared a catheter but I could not see its insertion.  Then we waited.  And then I woke.

I watched IN MY MIND'S EYE and A CAROL CHRISTMAS yesterday both of which I enjoyed very much.

Many good BK touches in both....and some terrific acting especially in MIND'S EYE, but of course after listening to the CD I was anxiously awaiting each song as it came up.

After watching them both, I fell asleep, and when I woke up it was time for TARGETS.

So last night we enjoyed TARGETS, which we’d all seen, and I was pleasantly surprised when the two 49-year-old young’uns here listened to THE LAST PICTURE SHOW being introduced and wanted to watch that, too. Kristi in particular really got into it and wants to get back to it via my Criterion Blu-ray because she nodded off in a couple of places.

BUT...  What in the name of all that’s holy has happened to Peter Bogdanovich???

We were all shocked, shocked. I hadn’t heard anything about him in a while, and he’s obviously been devastated by health issues. He’s as good an interviewee and communicator as ever, and how brave of him to put himself out there. Or maybe he just needed the money. But at least he’s still around and has things to say.

Neither of these kids has seen WHAT’S UP, DOC? so maybe I can introduce them to that next week.

Is it true the frontal nudity when the boy steps out of the swimming pool has been cut?  That was such a shocking surprise when I first saw the movie in 1972(?).  My memory is that I saw it at Easter in Pittsburgh, but sometimes my memory fails me.  The two things I remember from the film beyond the brilliant cast are the swimming pool scene and Cloris Leachman hurling the coffee pot.

Last year by choreographer friend Chase Brock collaborated with my friend Eric Dietz on a dance theatre piece, The Girl With The Alkaline Eyes, set in the future.  The piece was amazing and I thought the score perfect for the piece.  I also was amazed at Eric's talent.  I had heard some of his songs and orchestra pieces, which were good, but I would have never known how to compose a score for tape and chamber group, much less orchestrate it.

It's just been released for download on mp3 on Amazon and you might check out the samples and see it grabs you.

I also saw the movie around 1972, probably in Ann Arbor.  Haven't rewatched it, but one of my book groups read the book recently and I was impressed with the writing.  It made me want to read some more Larry McMurtry.

When my family operated 5 gasoline stations in five different small towns in the 80's.....it worked like this.

Every Tuesday & Thursday the manager would drive around town and call in the prices from all of the other stations in town.  Now and then we would get a stealth call from corporate to do the survey.....

IF the neighboring stations suddenly went UP or DOWN in price, we were to call in immediately.

If someone went down.....we went down.....if someone went up....we went up.  AND sometimes we were the trendsetter in the up or down.....

It was interesting.  But I always changed the price on the pump before I changed the price on the sign if the price went down....if it went up, I changed the sign first.

What surprised me was my memory being faulty as to how Cybill sheds her last garments before jumping in. I was sure I remembered her standing on the diving board throughout that, but she sits down for the big finish and then it's an easy slide-in to the water.

DR Ginny, this book was part of my real introduction to Larry McMurtry. But it wasn't until around 1999 or 2000 when I was actively visiting secondhand bookstores, and reading more *about* books, that I was inspired to check out his writings. It would also have been watching the earlier Criterion releases of THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and learning about Bogdanovich's experiences with the story and with McMurtry and Archer City in general, that helped.

I didn't have any of his books yet, but I found a paperback edition of that one in a secondhand store and devoured it in August 2001 (yes, I remember exactly where I was). That led me to investigating what his other books were about, and it wasn't long before I was hooked. I was immediately interested in TEXASVILLE for obvious reasons, and read that book then watched the movie on a friend's copy of (I think) the laserdisc release which was the only one containing a longer cut.

But learning even more about McMurtry -- his love of books and his bookselling life, his expertise on the actual "Western" history of this country, etc. -- was a joy, and I'm sure I posted this before but in 2008 on one of my business trips to my company headquarters in Dallas, I took a day to drive to Archer City and explored the town, all four of his bookstores, and of course the Dairy Queen!  :)

I think DR John G. has been there as well.

Didn't see the man, though, even though of course one always hopes that the day you're there, he'll be in there doing something or other. Luck of the draw. But I knew he shuns celebrity (he didn't even permit any of his own books in the stores), and I would have done nothing more than say hi, and thanks, but it would have been great to see him.

Looks like the movie was released in October 1971.

I know I saw it right then, in Cleveland Heights, along with my friends at school who had been swept up in the "new Hollywood" since our first year there 1967-68.

And that scene... talk about history making! Frankly, I think it still has an impact today. Especially when seen on TV of all things, in the company of others seeing the movie for their first time.

There was a huge line at Costco. I had to wait 20 minutes to be allowed in. I was able to find only 75 percent of what I needed, not including the extras that somehow flew into my cart and refused to leave until I had paid for them. These included a bad of limoncello-white chocolate dipped almonds. they won't last until Easter.

the grocery store was actually worse than Costco. there were people who just didn't care. They didn't have gloves or mask on. They didn't practice social distancing. You just had to keep your distance from them. I was surprised I found the last bag of all-purpose flour. And somehow,  six-pack of wine just appeared in my cart as if by magic.

I would say that a good 50%-60% of people did not have their hands or faces covered. Most, though, did keep their distance.

Gas at the grocery store was $1.41. I don't know what it cost at Costco, usually a few cents less.

I love those Lemoncello white chocolate dipped almonds! :D

In a little while I have to lay everything out for tonight - it's a bit complicated because the time it would take to write a little thing about each song and then go grab the YouTube link, well...  So, I'm gonna write it now and cut and paste the link in the document then all I have to do is cut and paste from there right into Facebook and here.  That should work fine.  I'm also thinking about doing a Facebook Live intro.  I don't know what the problem is with doing that on my computer but I keep getting a message saying my browser doesn't support a camera or something.  I checked my settings and it's supposed to "ask" if I want to allow it but it doesn't.  It's fine on the Facebook APP on the phone so I'd have to put the phone on some books and lean it up against the computer screen or something, which is a pain.  I find it very irritating not to be able to do it on the computer.  I also, for Facebook only, clicked "allow" for the mic and camera.  They both work fine because I can certainly FaceTime.

Thank you for that link, DR Elmore. I don't remember knowing that Eric Dietz (my occasional table partner, right?) was a composer. Will check it out.

I can't remember if you've met Eric or not, DR ChasSmith!  Here he is with Chase Brock and one of the Alkaline dancers.

Yes, isn't he the one who was usually monitoring/recording the rehearsals for you guys? That's him, right?

Yep!

This was very interesting :)

My brother and his friend Rick went into the neighboring theatre to see THE GODFATHER and I saw PICTURE SHOW......then waiting a LONG time for them to come out.....

Hmmmmm....THE GODFATHER was released in 1972.....that's weird....  Maybe since it was released in March, 1972, PICTURE SHOW was being run again after the nominations....

We drove to Fred Meyer and parked.  Then we did our walk over to Fort Vancouver which was relaxing and not stressful like walking here.  Most of the people were polite and practiced proper social distancing.  The few that didn't were easy to avoid by walking on the lawn.  The fort spread out with large grass areas, large enough to host 4th of July partying and fireworks.  Hmm, I wonder if that will be cancelled this year.  I hope so.

I’ve read just about everything of the McMurtry’s. Some are better than others. I loved Texasville, the sequel to Last Picture Show, though the movie was nowhere near as brilliant as the book. I also loved Lonesome Dove and its sequel, Streets of Laredo.

Peter Bogdanovich has had a most uneven track record. I would say his first handful of movies were brilliant and then it all evaporated. There were rumors cocaine was everywhere on the set of At Long Last Love, which he denies. There other rumors that his genius friends who helped him in the early years, like Orson Welles, died off, leaving him to his own dubious talents. Whatever the reason, he stopped making good movies somewhere around the time of Nickelodeon.

Bogdanovich was way to uppity for his own good.  I will say that I saw The Last Picture Show (didn't see Targets until the 1980s) on the day it opened, or maybe even at a preview - and I was not as in love with it as most.  I found it paced oddly and a couple of performances annoyed me.  I did like Cybill, though, and Jeff Bridges was very good.  In subsequent years my feelings haven't really changed.  I thought What's Up, Doc worked well then and it works well now, and both films are fine without scores.  But it's everything after those - he willfully doesn't use actual scores and it's mostly to the detriment of the films.  His Noises Off is horrible, I can't stand They All Laughed, Nickelodeon is awful, Mask is okay, and the rest are terrible.  And I cannot listen to him speak or watch him - he always sounds like he's sucking food out of his teeth.

So, here's the commentary and link to video one:

Hi, everybody, and welcome to the first Kritzerland on Facebook show.  We’ve been doing a monthly cabaret show since 2010, and so tonight should have been show 105, but obviously that isn’t happening.  No, we’re all in our homes, self-isolating, wearing masks – I’m wearing my mask right now – it looks just like my actual face.  Anyway, I think I’m live here on Facebook Live and we’ve pulled together a fun retrospective of videos from our shows.  We couldn’t obviously feature all the great singers who’ve done our shows – we were limited to what videos we had and what would make a good program for tonight.  Our shows have always been structured, so do try to watch the videos in order.  As always with Kritzerland shows, you’ll hear some very rare songs, you’ll hear some classics, and you’ll hear some originals.  So, here’s how this will work.  After I introduce the song live, I’ll post the video link, you click on it, you’ll be whisked to YouTube.  You watch, then come back here and I’ll live introduce the next number and I’ll post that link.  Now, you may to refresh the page, but even I, a complete luddite can do that.  I hope that will work for everyone.  So, let’s get this show on the road.  To open our Kritzerland on Facebook retrospective, here’s an Anthony Newley/Leslie Bricusse song sung by one of my favorite people – Kay Cole. https://youtu.be/ddsGn3KHGTI

Now we have a song called Three Friends – we’ve done it a couple of times at Kritzerland.  When I was searching for a song I’d written for a show called Yearbook, a show written specifically for high schools to do back in the early 1990s, I couldn’t find the one I wrote on YouTube, and the only thing from the show on YouTube was a snippet from some song called Three Friends.  I was very taken with it, called the company that licenses the show so I could get a script and score to see how my song, which was called Nerd, was ultimately used.  They sent it to me with a recording of the show.  I looked in the back of the script at the song credits and saw my credit for Nerd and found Three Friends to see who’d written it.  Me.  I had no idea, no memory of it at all.  It’s in my book of lyrics that’s coming out soon, and I actually found my hand-written lyric sheet for it and that’s in the book, too.  So, story over and here’s Alexa Giraudon, Mackenzie Wrap, and Carly Shukiar. https://youtu.be/_k-QzunKBT4

All right, this is from the show we did just one month ago, our tribute to the late, great Jerry Herman.  We had the irrepressible Jason Graae with us and the day before our stumble-through, two days before the show, I just threw out there that maybe he and I should do Bosom Buddies together.  He thought it was a great idea but we both thought it wouldn’t really work unless we personalized the lyrics.  I wrote some specialty lyrics that night, sent them to him, he wrote a few things, we did it sans rehearsal at our stumble-through and then without any further runs of it we performed it at the show.  Here it is.

Okay, here’s a real rarity.  This song was on Stephen Sondheim’s famous list of songs he wished he’d written.  I was the first to record it, way back in 1994 on the first Unsung Musicals album.  It’s from a big flop musical from 1962 called We Take the Town.  Sadly, the show didn’t take the town and it closed in Philadelphia without reaching Broadway. Robert Preston starred as Mexican revolutionary, Pancho Villa.  Yes, this was a gay, lighthearted musical about the exploits of that madcap and wacky Pancho Villa, based on the MGM film Viva Villa..  It’s by Matt Dubey and Harold Karr and it’s called Silverware.  Doing it is Robert Yacko and Will Collyer. https://youtu.be/FNKelJYKA08

That is one wonderful song. Sick, twisted and hilarious. No wonder Sondheim wishes he'd written it. And a really good performance.

Another favorite Kritzerland performer is Kim Huber.  Here she is doing a song by Adryan Russ and Doug Haverty from their musical Inside Out, which I directed a few years ago in the Burbank. https://youtu.be/uNsFtlVMfa0

How can you say that? Writing a brief has got to be barrels of fun! (Insert smart-alecky face here.)

I don't envy you that.

One of our all-time favorite Kritzerland shows was a tribute to the great Rupert Holmes.  We’ve been good friends since meeting in the 1990s, and he came out here for the show and not only attended but sang a few of his songs at the end.  And you know he sang his big hit. https://youtu.be/EmqPEysX5pw

Ah, but at least I have work to do.  This isn't a brief brief, I'm already on about page 27.  I'll finish it tomorrow.   I'm glad I have several to do because they are easy at home work.  All state trials have been put off until at least July.  So, it's good to have this sort of case to work on. Fed trials I think are still June at the moment

Back in 2011, we used an eleven-year-old girl in two of our shows that year and she was just stellar.  We’ve continued using her ever since and watched her grow up before our very eyes, and while she had an incredible voice as a kid, it’s just gotten better and better over the years.  I think she’s old enough to drink now.  I did the arrangement for this put-together of two Sondheim songs for an album called The Stephen Sondheim Album – You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow and Not a Day Goes By – and here’s Jenna Lea Rosen. https://youtu.be/aO1gfE3V6t4

And now, before we do our final song, let me just thank our loyal and wonderful audiences who’ve been coming to our shows every month since September of 2010.  And let me thank our three venues – the Gardenia, the Federal, and Vitello’s, which is our current home and we hope to be back in May or June with show 105.  I’d like to thank our first Kritzerland co-producer, Adryan Russ, and our current co-producer, Doug Haverty.  We’ve had great musical directors over the years, and tonight you’ve seen and heard some of our best: Richard Allen, John Boswell, Alby Potts, Tom Griep, and Lloyd Cooper.  So, back in 2012, I met a kid named Sami Staitman.  Her first show with us was our second anniversary show that September.  I used her in a musical revue called Pure Imagination, then in my production of Li’l Abner, and then I wrote a one-girl musical for her, which we did when she was fifteen and for which she was nominated as Best Actress for a Robby Award.  While she didn’t win that award, she did win a Kritzie.  She’s done more Kritzerlands than anyone so we thought we’d close with one of the songs from that one-girl musical, which was called Welcome to My World – the song is called Annie and here she is doing it at Kritzerland.  Thanks everyone for being here and stay safe. https://youtu.be/xzRBl_L2xvE

I once saw a summer stock production of A Chorus Line where they used "this and that" because they were afraid of their geriatric audience. And they cut almost all of the profanity. It was a very strange experience.

I saw a high school production that used "This and That."  They also cut most (if not all) of the profanity, too...which makes sense for a high school production.

Back from a fifteen minute drive to keep the motor car in shape.  At the Shell station, the price went UP six cents.  I don't get it, at ALL.  And not one other station I passed was under 3.80.  Something is screwy somewhere in if our governor or mayor would just shut up with their doom and gloom pronouncements and DO something to these companies, like penalize them or fine them until they lower their prices like the rest of the country, maybe something would actually happen that was positive.

Here it is.

That video is like Viagra for old gay theater fans.

I mean, that's very entertaining.

I love those Lemoncello white chocolate dipped almonds! :D

They are evilly delicious.

They would be fine, if you can spit out the almonds.
