Well, you've read the notes, the notes were big and square, and now it is time for you to post until the big square cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: IMMUTABLE!
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
I'm quite tired so I shall shortly get my beauty rest.
-
Oooh--first post-BK post, courtesy of my late night gig.
-
BK:
I know of composer Hugo Montenegro, but never realized that his film work was relatively small about seven films. He tv work seems to be mainly the Partridge Family and Here Comes The Brides.
I think I remembering having some LPs of movie themes that I thought he was the composer for, but now I am not so sure.
So does he have a reputation in Hollywood as a composer, arranger or what?
-
Topic of the Day: the first song that came to mind was "All Those Chrismas Clichés," recorded by Lainie Kazan on the CD, "Cabaret Noel: A Broadway Cares Christmas." I LOVE this song and I especially love her version (which I assume is the very first recording). Christiane Noll and Susan Egan both recorded it later. They have lovely voices and otherwise sing it well, but I think that they're too young. It about Christmases past and I don't think they're old enough to have the feeling of nostalgia that (to me) the song needs. It should be sung by a woman "of a certain age" and they're not there yet...in my humble opinion. Lanie's version is perfection. :)
-
Today, I'll be ushering for an event at The Washington Center for the Performing Arts called City of Olympia Arts and Events Ethnic Celebration (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/calendar/calendar_detail.asp?event_id=859). It's a free event, so mainly we're there for crowd control. ;) The program starts at 10:00 am, but my shift doesn't start until 12:30 pm. I'll be done at 4:00 pm, so after that, my friend Margo and I are going to the movies. I don't know what we're going to see (I can't remember what we decided on), but I'm sure I want to see it.
Good night and have a good day, all! ;D

DR George, I'll have to go listen to Lainie's version again. I've alway been partial to Nancy LaMott's version on her Christmas album, along with "Just In Time For Christmas."
-
DR td: really enjoying those Sara G. tracks - thanks! :)
GREAT mortgage news, DR George! Fantastic!! Congratulations. :)
Oh, and DR td - I do have that Poppins book, but I haven't cracked it open yet. [So what else is new? ;) ]
-
Nice to see DR elmore3003's Playbill.com mention. Thanks for posting it, DR JoseSPiano.
-
Just saying hey Favroite songs layer
-
Favorite songs?
-
Thanks for the photographs of the New York HHW mini gathering last night!! Wonderful to see everyone having a good time!!
-
Good morning, all!
Singdaw got in late and he's already up posting? I feel like a slackard. I may even go back to bed in a moment...
-
We did indeed partake of the fine hospitality of DR Ben and his Ant. I think I could spend several days just looking at all the interesting items that decorate their apartment. They live in a very cool neighborhood; we walked around it a bit before showing up there.
-
Before that, DH and I had parted ways: he went to an audio equipment place and I went to one of my favorite shopping haunts, the American Craft Museum. I also went to the American Craft shop and happened to find something I thought would be a nice Bat Mitzvah present--- at least I hope it will.
-
It was so nice to sit in a cozy apartment with the yule log blazing on the screen! And we were very happy that DR Singdaw was up for joining us!
-
This morning I will be calling DR Larry, perhaps going up to his n'hood because that's very close to the Bat Mitzvah location. I am wondering is this is a skirt (brrrrrr...) affaird or if I can wear pants. (ahhhhhh....)
-
I also have to schlep my editing system up to Peter's apartment and load the egg cream footage at some point. And I also have to meet the son of a friend who lives near Larry.
-
Have fun DR EDISAURUS.
Today is a work day. Oh well.
-
Richard Tyler: Oh, did they have bowling when you were a girl, Mrs. Williams?
Marjorie Lord: Yes. I was on a team with my good friend Martha Washington.
-
Amy, glad to see you made it back to the Edison (Edison, Edisaurus, hmmm a connection?). I realized that I forgot to say that you needed the N or R local to get to 49th Street but you're familiar with the subway so I'm sure you did just fine.
We so enjoyed our little get together last night. Anthony is sleeping and the laundry is in the dryer. The pictures are great and all is right with the world.
-
Saturday morning greetings! Here I am at work, ready for my first information waitressing since January 4. It's a shortened day for me, because I'm leaving at 4pm in order to join Richard for a dinner at the University Club in Cincinnati this evening. Prime rib - yum!
Love the festive pictures from last night's gathering at the home of DR Ben and Anthony.
-
The marching theme/title credit music from VIVA MAX is one of my all-time favorite bits of movie music. Hugo Montenegro is one of the three composers credited on that movie. I wonder if he composed that theme.
-
And the word of the day is: IMMUTABLE!
And The Song Of The Day Is: UNFORGETTABLE
-
TOD:
The soundtrack verion of the "Theme from Picninc"
Jeri Southern "An Occcasional Man" among many others of her songs)
Percy Faith Theme from "A summer Place"
Arthur Fiedler's (via Richard Hayman, I'm sure) version of "Stairway to the Stars"
Nat King Cole "That Sunday, That Summer"
Almost anything that Petula Clark sang
-
BK-- goood luck with your empty hole :o
-
Good morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I guess I should read today's Notes...
-
Oh... And it seems the handyman has picked this morning to start working on the outside of the building again. So, my alarm clock this morning was the sound of scaffolding being put together right outside my window. :-\
-
Good morning, all! I spoke to our DR edisaurus about 8:30 am during one of daily small breakdowns during which I feel overwhellmed and exhausted by the megillah. As Joe Orton observed, with madness as with vomit it's the passerby who receives the inconvenience, so I do apologize, DR edisaurus, for my fraught state. I need a week's break from tyis madness.
The bomb did go off; at least the cannister's empty, so I assume it did. I think on Tuesday, I'll do another one to kill anything that might be thinking about moving in. I had a ton of laundry this morning, and later I'll order a set of plastic under-bed storage tubs from Target so I can unpack some of these plastic bags and try to give my life some normalcy. Last night I watched three hours or so of the BBC adaptation of Dickens' PICKWICK PAPERS. Very funny.
Yesterday, I ordered my new bed, and I expect it to arrive in a couple of weeks. Now I need to order a set of box springs. Oy.
-
BK-- goood luck with your empty hole :o
I have a friend at City Center Encores! who's been complaining about that.
-
Good morning!
Cold again and overcast, too. Supposed to be getting slowly warmer, but it didn't feel so warm this morning.
-
Thanks for the pictures last night with Ben, Ant, Edi, Greg, and Singdaw. Always love seeing "our folks" in homey pictures.
-
BK-
In your notes on HURRY SUNDOWN, you mention "Henry Backus." I'm sure you meant Jim Backus.
-
Today, I will watch the Thursday night's 8 p.m. episode of CHUCK as I cook and eat lunch.
I think I will also watch an episode from the NCIS box set that I went through in October, so I can compare in my own mind JAG and NCIS to see which one I prefer. If I had to pick right now, I'd pick JAG, but it's the freshest in my mind, and I want to give NCIS an equal shot. I find the JAG cast so ingratiating (and, I'll admit, filled with more hotties).
-
TV REMINDER:
The biggest news tonight - the second season premiere of TORCHWOOD on BBC-America.
I cannot WAIT to see this show!
NBC is giving the entire prime time hours to the National Figure Skating Championships (Scott Hamilton doing the commentary), and it's on at 4 as well with the dance finals and the ladies' short program.
-
Notes have been read. And I also put a load of laundry in the dryer too. Not that one thing has anything to do with the other.
-
Of course, at some point today, I'd like to finish THE JEWISH AMERICANS. The DVD doesn't come out until February 5th, so there's no rush to meet street date, but since I have only one more episode to go and three bonus features, I could conceivably finish it today depending on how long those bonus features are.
-
As for the Topic of the Day... Hmm...
I shall have to ponder this while I walk around my 'hood to take care of a few errands. And that walk should be commencing shortly, so...
Laters...
-
Well, I have an errand to run and then must get back to get started on lunch and viewing.
WBBL.
-
Oh, and DR td - I do have that Poppins book, but I haven't cracked it open yet. [So what else is new? ;) ]
My advice to you, DR ColeSlaw is to crack it open and let the rest of us know all about it. ;)
-

Yes, of course Jim Backus - I was probably thinking of Henny, his wife's name.
-
Only got about six hours of sleep, and she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon.
-
Regarding the Monte Carlo blaze: Fred Phelps says that it just proves that homosexuals are gamblers. ;)
-
Amy and Greg are staying at the Edison? Why, was the Hotel Carter full?
-
DR Tomovoz - I am SO proud of you!!!!! 20 pounds in 2 months is quite remarkable.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! :) :) :)
-
Amy and Greg are staying at the Edison? Why, was the Hotel Carter full?
Well, their room at the Monte Carlo was a bit singed...
-
Hello, everyone.
I, too, have stuff in the dryer.
-
Nice photos from Ben and Ant's. Flattering pics of everyone, I thought.
-
Lunchtime!
During my 3 morning hours at the Information Services Desk, we answered many questions about the boarded-up window on the front of the building. Seems there was a fight on the sidewalk Thursday evening and one of the participants was shoved into the glass. It will cost the taxpayers (well, probably our insurance company) $4,000 to replace the window.
-
Congrats to GEORGE on his refi! Don't spend your $130K all in one place. ;)
Congrats to TOMOVOZ on his 20 lbs (or should I say "off" his 20 lbs?)
Congrats to LARRY on his PLAYBILL mention. Nice bed, too.
-
And the word of the day is: IMMUTABLE!
Bonnie and Buster spend every day with each other, always and forever together, not just brother and sister but pals. You could say that they are IMMUTTABLE.
-
GEORGE mentioned LAINIE KAZAN. She was a big favorite of mine in college. It's been years since I've heard her name. Does she have a niche following? Vegas?
-
Bonnie and Buster spend every day with each other, always and forever together, not just brother and sister but pals. You could say that they are IMMUTTABLE.
LOL. Good one, DR Woody.
-
Just a reminder to anyone and everyone who has stuff in the dryer -
It works better if you turn the dryer on.
Just saying.
-
Many years ago when I was living in Venice Beach (LA), cockroaches were often a problem. Many people said, "It's the beach. You can't get rid of them." Two of the places I rented had cockroaches. In both cases I was able to get rid of them--for good--using just boric acid powder, which is relatively non-toxic--to humans, anyway--but deadly to the roaches. I'm wondering if once Larry's problem is under control a less toxic approach can be used for maintenance, thus not subjecting our beloved DR to any more pesticide. I don't know if boric acid powder works on bedbugs, but it sure did the trick for the roaches.

Oh, REALLY?? My, my, the things one learns at HHW. ;)

Today's moment of political (religious?) incorrectness, courtesy of my sister department:
-
Must go tend to the dryer--and other Saturday chores.
(All those people who claim that "chores" is an antiquated word haven't been to my house!)
-
And, speaking of turn-ons, Frank Bruni writes about one of DR Jose's favorite turn-ons in his blog today (http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/25/head-scratchers-levain-bakery/#more-367).
-
Yesterday, Matt wrote:
No sir, I meant what I said. For example, I had never heard of Judah Benjamin, second to Jefferson Davis in the Confederacy hierarchy
I read long ago, that Lew Wallace, the Union general and novelist, used the name of the Confederate plitician Judah Benjamin as the basis for the name of his most famous ficitonal character - Judah Ben-Hur.

Is anyone else reading the new John Barrowman autobiography?
Of course, the idea that anyone this young feels compelled to write their autobiography is a bit strange...
-
I read BEN-HUR when I was in high school (which I believe was the same year it was published). Since during the time I was growing up, I hated to read books; I imagine that I obtained that bit of trivia from the Cliff Notes that I purchased for my book report. I can think of no other reason that I would still even remember the name of Judah Benjamin.
-
I wonder if DR elmore3003 has time to look at the new Letters of Noel Coward:
It got a great write-up (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2007/11/25/books/review/Simon-t.html?scp=3&sq=Noel+Coward&st=nyt) in The New York Times.

Perhaps Mr. Barrowman is lobbying to take over the lead on Broadway when Miss LuPone leaves the show?
-
It is time, alas, for me to get ready for work.
I have no idea what I'll be cooking for dinner tonight. I just know it had better be simple and quick, because between din-din, Torchwood, and an early start time on Sunday there simply will not be enough hours in the day, no, not enough hours in the day at all.
-
I can't for the life of me remember why I know this, but there was a big photo spread on Hurry, Sundown in either The Saturday Evening Post or Look at the time of its release. Since I collected SEPs in those days (I have them back into the 19th century), my gut is it was a SEP photo essay.
-
Hugo Montenegro is of course best known for his arrangement of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. It was his version which charted in the U.S. In fact, I remember how shocked I was when I got the OST of the film and the theme was different than the one I had been hearing on the radio. I'll have to raid the memory cells, but I know Montenegro was discussed on an old listserve I belonged to dealing with arrangers and I want to say one of his children is very active in music right now, but I just can't remember.
-
Speaking of children of entertainers, here's last night's gig strange audience member report: there was a very attractive woman sitting in front of me who was obviously doing some sort of sales presentation with the theater/restaurant owner. As we were nearing the end of a set, I announced we'd be doing "Girl from Ipanema," and she turned to me and said, "Oh, that's from Junior's favorite album of his dad's." I, of course, said, "Huh?" And she said, "Frank Sinatra, Jr.--his favorite album of his father's is Jobim & Sinatra." So of course I then asked her if she knew about Sinatra & Company, the second album of Sinatra doing Brasilian material (this time with Deodato arrangements) that never received a real U.S. release, or his never released single of Jobim's "Sabia." Well, in the weird but true department, it turns out she's the Sinatra family's licensing guru and she presented me with a huge folder of images she licenses, and then during our break regaled me with some pretty funny stories of the Sinatra kids. I asked her if she had heard the commentary track of "You Only Live Twice" where Nancy's singing is not exactly discussed in glowing terms by John Barry and the director (27 or 28 takes to get a finished product, IIRC). It was all kind of surreal--Frank, Jr. has a DVD of his Carnegie Hall remembrance concert that he's having trouble finding a distributor for, and I told her she should pitch it to PBS as it seems like a perfect thing for one of their pledge weeks, so if it pops up there, you can blame me, not Jose.
-
Oh, and she was wearing a full length mink coat and the biggest frigging diamond ring I have ever seen (and that includes Betsy's grandmother's several carat monster which resides in our safety deposit box).

I believe you are thinking of Britney Montenegro.
-
...Or perhaps "Britney Montenegro"?
But that could just be her stage-spelling. ;)
-
Good Afternoon!
I'm back from running my errands, and as well as from putting another load of laundry in the dryer. Again, just so you know. ;)
-
And speaking of Levain...
Oh, nevermind... :)

(Alas, it might be sitting in a plastic bag right now. :-\)
-
We just got back to the hotel to drop off some stuff, after walking from 46th to 66th and over and back and forth between 7th and 9th, seaching for a necktie for Mr. Linton.
I underestimated how dressy a Bat Mitzvah would be, based on past experiences of events in NY and elsewhere, where I was very over-dressed. Weddings, film premieres, Broadway shows...I always thought people got dressed up for things more than they do.
Oy!

I wonder if he mentions his preferred method for cutting his birthday cakes?
:o
::)
:-X
;D
-
I did speak to DR edisaurus earlier, as well as DR elmore, and, hopefully, we'll all be able to meet up tomorrow for breakfast/brunch.
-And I really do hope DR elmore's bedbug woes soon come to an end. Or, at the very least, he's able to get a good night's sleep sometime soon. Sleep is good. Anyone have any spare Ambien? ;)
-
I wonder if he mentions his preferred method for cutting his birthday cakes?

;D
I have been wondering if he addresses his exhibitionistic tendencies and inability to stay clothed.
-
Greg couldn't beleive that neckties could cost 40 bucks. (This says a lot about how often he has bought ties!) I told him that I thought that was pretty reasonable, especially for NY, and when we went in Pink and Hugo Boss and he saw ties that were from $85 to over $100, he realized he may have been living in the past. But he couldn't find anything he liked, from $100 ties to $4 ties.
I sent him off on his own while I take a shower. I hope he finds something he likes.
DR Jose mentioned Daffy's, so maybe he'll give that a try!
-
I did speak to DR edisaurus earlier, as well as DR elmore, and, hopefully, we'll all be able to meet up tomorrow for breakfast/brunch.
If we figure out where we're going, might FJL/Skip like to join us?
-
We had lunch at Le Pan Quotidien...best quiche I've ever had in my life---crust was made fresh. Yum!
-
DR Elmore, I love the new bed!
-
And you can always feel free to vent, as well as taking a long weekend of R&R in Atlanta! We have a spare room. No bugs, just cats...
-
Toyland time is over for the day. I need either to find a site for the historic Philadelphia Inquirer and other Philly newspapers online or to make another trek to the NYPL microfilm division.
For now, I will head for home, stopping to pick up various cleaning supplies, and I will clean off all possible surfaces that might be contaminated from yesterday's bomb. I think I may put some of this morning's laundry into drawers and closet before I fall over this evening.
Back tomorrow!
-
We had lunch at Le Pan Quotidien...best quiche I've ever had in my life---crust was made fresh. Yum!
OH! You found Le Pain Quotidien! Guess that's one place you can cross off your list! :) *And Petrossian is basically across the street from there, isn't it?
-
I think if I had gone through what DR Elmore has, I would be a basket case.
-
As far as being underdressed, it has also been my experience that after people have had a glass of wine or two, it really doesn't matter...
Hope that hold true tonight!
Egg creams will be made at the after party, as well.
-
I think if I had gone through what DR Elmore has, I would be a basket case.
I am a basket case!
Okay, now I'm out.

Hmm... So...
When I stepped outside earlier, I found out the handyman was working on the place next door - which also happens to be where our property manager lives. It looks like he's pretty-ing up the stoop - which entails sanding down the concrete steps, which, of course, means that there is a big cloud of concrete dust hovering in the air outside our apartment.
And after thinking that I had smelled something funny in the apartment a few minutes ago, I realized that one of the burners on the stove was still "on" - with no flame... So, now I have the french doors to the backyard cracked a little to let in some fresh air, and to let out the bad stuff. Alas, the culprit has a (bad) habit of doing this from time to time. However, the culprit is not that roomie, so...
Ah, well... Every day a little death.
???
-
If we figure out where we're going, might FJL/Skip like to join us?
Hmm... Maybe we could all meet at the Little Pie Shop... Each order a different pie (small or medium)... Then just set them down in the middle of the table, and dig in... Silverware could be optional.
-
OH! You found Le Pain Quotidien! Guess that's one place you can cross off your list! :) *And Petrossian is basically across the street from there, isn't it?
They are all over the place---we went to the one by Lincoln Center. I remembered that we had been to one of these places a few years ago, probably north of this one but I hadn't remembered the name of it.
The one in LA does have a much larger brunch menu--omlettes and such, and the wait staff seemed friendlier, but this still was certainly yummy.
And I think the one in LA is cheaper---our bill for breakfast was over $40 dollars for 2 quiches, 2 lattes and a croissant. But it was mmmmm mmmm good!
-
My DH has a new tie! Two actually! One was "Ralph Lauren" and the other was a silk "Mizrahi"--$4! Doubt if they're the genuine article, but they look nice, so...
-
Mmmmm...little pies...
-
DR Tomovoz, kudos on losing 20 pounds. Usually when I've bragged about that, I was in England.
And a lovely new avatar, too!
-
DR Jose, don't breathe in the concrete dust!
-
The movie last night was just ok, but Sherlock & Keith were very entertaining.
-
Just got today's mail and something wicked this way came!
Thank you DR George! :-*
-
td, I enjoyed Sara’s site….http://www.myspace.com/saragazarekband
George, congrats on your new mortgage.
Singdaw & Ben, thank you for the news and photos.
Jose, thank you for the Larry link.
-

There's actually another one or two up in DR elmore's neck of the woods.
Some of the locations here in the City are bigger (or smaller) than others, and offer more (or less) menu items. There's a huge one a few blocks below Union Square that even switches to Table Service in the afternoon.
As for your $40 lunch tab... Are you sure they didn't spike your lattes with something? *Although, I still sometimes have to get used to the restaurant tax here in NYC, so...
-
Back from some errands. She of the Evil Eye has left and now I shall start writing, and also wait for Mr. Handy Man to come plug this big square hole that's giving me the willies.
-
But first, might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone? You'd think it was a Saturday or something.
-
You'd never know we've been having rainy, gloomy weather - it's like a summer day today - thus Los Angeles, California, USA.
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
Will we never get to page five?
-
No postings in over an hour and I'm the only one in the jernt. That's just great. I see that a proper bitch-slapping is in order and it's going to be a powerful one.
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
Does he never get a break? I thought he only played around the midnight hour, PST!
-
As for the questions about the Barrowman autobiography. None of the issues raised by our DRs appear to be in the index or the timeline. I guess time will tell! [And time ain't talkin' yet!]
-
wait for Mr. Handy Man to come plug this big square hole
We've already gone there! :P
-
Singdaw was here and gone. I'm here and the only one in the jernt - it's ever so nauseating.
-
Mr. Handy Man won't be here till three. I've written a little more than half the pages I wish to do today. Perhaps I'll just bang out the other three or so right now and be done with it.
-
We did indeed partake of the fine hospitality of DR Ben and his Ant. I think I could spend several days just looking at all the interesting items that decorate their apartment. They live in a very cool neighborhood; we walked around it a bit before showing up there.
:)
-
The purging has begun! Well, at least I finally placed two ads on craigslist in order to start freeing up some shelf-space in my room. My roommate just sold his spare keyboard last week - and the post had only been up for a day. And he got $900 for it! So I'm hoping that his selling karma will help me move some of the cookware (still in boxes and never used) that I've accumulated over the past couple of years.
-
And as my W-2s start to come in...
Hmm, I guess I did play some of the auditions for the current revival of Grease... I really had forgotten about those. :-\ ;)
-
We just got back to the hotel to drop off some stuff, after walking from 46th to 66th and over and back and forth between 7th and 9th, seaching for a necktie for Mr. Linton.

Oy!
I'm sorry I'm just now paying attention to your Bat Mitzvah woes. Yes, they can be rather dressy.
-
it's ever so nauseating.
Speaking of nauseating: The hot chocolate last night at DR Ben and Ant's put "hot chocolate" back on my radar screen. So this morning I went to Dunkin' Donuts and let them talk me into a "Milky Way Hot Chocolate(TM)."
Big mistake.
It was truly nauseating! :P
-
Hmm, I guess I did play some of the auditions for the current revival of Grease...
Are you now a close, personal friend of Max? ;)
-
Congratulations Tom on your new svelte self.
Elmore good shipping vibes on your attractive new bed.
-
I wonder if he mentions his preferred method for cutting his birthday cakes?
The mind boggles...
:)
-
Also on tonight on TLC is the Miss America Pageant.
I normally probably would not watch. But i have been watching the Miss America Reality show with the guy from Ugly Betty. So i am curious how that will play into things if at all.
-
More vibes for DR Elmore. ~~~~~~~~~~~
I feel so bad for you reading about your woes.
Hope things improve.
-
I have the opposite situation to DR MattH. I have the 10pm Thursday's CHUCK to watch.
DR MattH, i'm curious why you watched the 10pm show first (i'm guessing maybe you were watching something else at 8pm and found yourself free at 10pm). The reason i ask is from what it said in the blurb in the tv it sounded like the 10pm show was in response to things that happend at 8pm!
-
No TORCHWOOD premiere here yet. Although i am curious to know when it will start. We were a number of weeks behind you last season.
-
I am going to watch thursday night's BIG SHOTS, and then probably the MISS AMERICA REALITY from last night.
-
We are supposed to get the remains of the latest California rainstorm. They expect it to hit around 8 p.m. I hope so. The rain last week was very brief, indeed.
-
If Mr. Barrowman likes to show himself off so much, then why did he wear a shirt while in bed with April during "Barcelona" in the Kennedy Center COMPANY? Did he have a cold or something at the performance I saw?
-
I wish I'd known about plans for a spontaneous get-together tomorrow. We've got a brunch at a neighbor's and then I'm rushing off to see SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (the painter George, not DR George :) )
-
Maybe it's in earlier posts...... I"m catching up.
Mr Montengro wrote for The Ambushers, Lady In Cement, Charro, the Undefeated, Viva Max - and of course The Man from U N C L E.
He was the conductor/arranger for Harry Belafonte.
(From Movie Classics CD - the music of Ennio Morricone and Hugo Montenegro)
-
Planning for a spontaneous get-together - is that an oxymoron?
-
Tomovoz - And David McCallum of MAN FROM UNCLE fame was one of the leads in Skip's show TIME AND AGAIN at Manhattan Theatre Club. That's only two degrees of separation between Skip and Mr. Montenegro.
-
Also on tonight on TLC is the Miss America Pageant.
I don't know what, exactly, but apparently DR Edisaurus's work will be on display during this broadcast. :)
-
LOL DR FJL.
Re Degrees of Separation: DP Colin has been researching his family tree (convicts transported to Van Dieman's Land of course), and has discovered a touching of outer twigs with my own family tree. I will now have to check to see if we should indeed be sharing the same household.
-

A shirt? Really? Hmm... All I seem to remember during that scene was him in a black Dolce & Gabbana brief (which I think was actually a swimsuit) that had black "buckles" on the side. I'll have to check my production shots. Hmm... ???
-
I wish I'd known about plans for a spontaneous get-together tomorrow. We've got a brunch at a neighbor's and then I'm rushing off to see SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (the painter George, not DR George :) )
Hmm... I may see you at the Roundabout tomorrow afternoon, DR FJL. Although, I may be going to the evening performance. A friend of mine who just started working for Roundabout "has" to see the shows, and since he gets two passes for each show, well... We'll see.
-
The mind boggles...
:)
Well, I'm sure if you do a Google search, you'll come up with the details. He's actually mentioned it a few times in some of his interviews for "special interest" magazines.
-
Are you now a close, personal friend of Max? ;)
Well...
No.
-
Speaking of nauseating: The hot chocolate last night at DR Ben and Ant's put "hot chocolate" back on my radar screen. So this morning I went to Dunkin' Donuts and let them talk me into a "Milky Way Hot Chocolate(TM)."
Big mistake.
It was truly nauseating! :P
Well, the next time you're in the city, I'll have to take you to Grom for their Hot Chocolate. It's basically their gelato base heated up. Sooooooo good. Soooooooooo rich.
-
LOL DR FJL.

well as long as you don't plan to have kids you should be fine

Is anyone else reading the new John Barrowman autobiography?
Of course, the idea that anyone this young feels compelled to write their autobiography is a bit strange...
I think Kenneth Branagh wrote his autobiography at age 28 or 29.
-
((((((((((((((((((LARRY))))))))))))))))))))))))
-
Speakin of Kenneth Bragnah I just watched him play Iago in Othella (another Christmas DVD)
-
DR vixmom - So.... Did the vixter like "Sweeny Todd"? Even though she had to cover her eyes a few times? Is she having any "after effects" (nightmares)? And, yes, the final moments are actually the most shocking to me too.
-
DR George, I was very fortunate to have a real estate agent who talked me into going for a 15 year mortgage when I bought my house with the result that I had the house paid off several years before I retired and was able to use the money I wasn't paying for the mortgage over the course of years to save up a nice little nestegg to live on now.
It was among the best decisions I ever made.
-
Today I took the Vixter out to the hairdresser and paid for her to have purple hair extensions put in. The salon is running a promotion where all the money ($10 per extension) goes to the Leukemia Society. The Vixter had six put it on one side of her head. It looks vey nice actually!!

That's exactly what happened. I watched UGLY BETTY "live" and by the time 10 p.m. arrived, there was nothing else but CHUCK on.
The two episodes really don't have anything to do with one another as far as a story arc.
-
She also asked me once again to thank all those HHWers for their cookir orders, withyour help she was able to surpass (by a couple of boxes) her goal of 100 boxes sold.
-
And speaking of CHUCK, as much as I liked the 10 p.m. episode, I think the 8 p.m. episode was stupendous! Absolutely hilarious (Adam Baldwin had a fabulous showcase) and loads of fun. The wrap-up happened too quickly (all too often on CHUCK), but otherwise, the episode was a real winner.
-
. Oh she loved it, and not a single nightmare.
Whew!
-
I also watched the "Witch Hunt" episode of NCIS while I was eating lunch. Yes, I did enjoy the episode very much and the camaraderie between the team members, but I do think I prefer JAG to NCIS.
-
Speaking of Kenneth Branagh I just watched him play Iago in Othella
Tell us about Othello's sex change! What an innovative production... ;)
-
Also on the Vixter front, we received a letter today from the Director of Fine Arts for the School District advising us that she was chosen to be part of an Honors Choir. On February 2 at 7 AM She and 9 others will be bused to St Paul's Church up on 116th Street where they will meet with kids from other schools in the tristate area , spend the day learning music and then at at 8 PM that night they will give a concert
-
This afternoon I also watched the two hours of figure skating which featured the pair finals and the ladies short programs. (I assume tonight will be the dance finals and the ladies final). I was hoping they'd show the men's short program at some point today. The long is tomorrow night 7-9.
-
Well, the next time you're in the city, I'll have to take you to Grom for their Hot Chocolate.
It's a deal! :)
-
She also asked me once again to thank all those HHWers for their cookir orders, withyour help she was able to surpass (by a couple of boxes) her goal of 100 boxes sold.
I meant to ask before... I noticed some Girl Scouts selling nuts this year? "Plain" and chocolate-covered. Do those fall under a different program?
-
We are supposed to get the remains of the latest California rainstorm. They expect it to hit around 8 p.m. I hope so. The rain last week was very brief, indeed.
The snow & ice melted so we had a nice walk on the trails today. We fear a snow storm is headed our way tonight-hope the reports are wrong.
Rain vibes!

Dat's how we say in on Lawn Eyelund, ya wannna make sumpin of it?

We sell those in October.... the chocolate mint trefoils in the tin we gave you last year were part of that program
-

We also went to Walmart's eyecare location and bought the Vixter a new pair of trendy eyeglasses. When she gets them next week I will post a picture of her with her new look
-

Ah.... So, was that display I saw last week "old goods"?
-
Welcome Home Tomovoz!! Happy Australia Day!!!!
Congratuations on your slimfest!!
-
Well, I'm sure if you do a Google search, you'll come up with the details.
Found it! :o
-
Ah.... So, was that display I saw last week "old goods"?
I know that different countiesd sell at different tiem. Here in Suffolk County we sellour cookies ans candy about a month to 6 weeks behind the Girl Scouts in Nassau County, so perhaps in New York they sell their nuts now...
Of course it is all sealed in cans so I expect it must have a reasonably long shelf life
-
I've never seen girl scouts selling nuts. I wonder if they do it everywhere.
Congratulations to the Vixter and her Honors Choir spot.
-

Gotcha.
The funny thing is is that on the table where the items were on display was a large sign saying, "Girl Scout Cookie Time"... But there were no cookies?!?!?

***RAIN-NOT-SNOW VIBES***
for DR Jane!
-
Great news for chorister Vixter! :)
-
Heading down now to finish THE JEWISH AMERICANS on DVD. Then some skating and TORCHWOOD!
WBBL.
-
DR Jane - Is it one of those scenarios where you could get just a "little" bit of rain, but if it's cold enough, a lot of snow?
Whatever you end up getting, I hope it doesn't cause any travel issues - for cars or pedestrians.
-
Found it! :o
And you're NOT sharing?!?!?!?!
BK is correct, bitch-slapping is in order!
-
OK - Time for me to head out for dinner. I will be venturing north into the depths of "El Alto" for some rotisserie chicken, Peruvian and/or Dominican style.
Laters...
-
Found it! :o
So, of course, every time the line "Blow out the candles, Robert," came up in rehearsals....
-
And you're NOT sharing?!?!?!?!
Well, this IS a family site. :)
But, if you must...
Go here (http://www.johnbarrowman.com/outabout/press/2006/attitude122006.html) and then search on "birthday cake."
-
Thank you Singdaw & Jose.
The "weather alert" says a cold front is coming & we could get 4" of snow. We don't have any travel plans to California which is good. Not good is that we didn't buy any milk today, or stock up on basics and there is a chance we will be snowed in. I know it doesn't seem like much snow, if you live on flat roads. We don't, we have a semi steep drive half way up a hill, all of which can get very icy.
I suppose one of us could rush to the store now & stock up but we are both to lazy to do so-LOL.
-
I went supermarket shopping today and had the rudest teenage boy as a cashier...
I carefully check all teh cans before I biuy them to be sure they are free of dents and dings. he was throwing them down the belt so they wer smashing into one another despite the fact that I was bagging as quickly as I could . Finally I said, "Please, could you be more gentle? You are going to dent the cans"
He replied by picking up a can of corn and hurling it down the belt so hard that it dented a can of potatoes (I was purchasing about 40 different cans of veggies, soup, potatoes etc as our church food pantry is running very low on those items)
At that point I said." OK. Stop. Look waht you just did to this can"
his answer? " I can't help it if they bump up against each other, it's not my fault"
The he picked up a bag of apples held them a foot above the plastic bag and let it drop so it smashed against the metal counter and with the other hand grabbed a loaf of bread in the middle giving in a nice hourglass shape before hurling it at the cans.
I did something I never did before, I said "That's it, I'm done here" and walked away from 30 minutes of shopping
I went to the manager and reported this 15 year old punk kid who was going to teach me that I had no business criticizing his work performance
I had that job intehat very store for two years, many years ago, back in those prehistoric days when we needed to ring up each item by pressing little buttons and count and figure the change, and pack those brown paper bags so they were "squared" and not likely to burst.
I have also been shopping in that store several times a week for the past 30 years and have been known over the years to stop at the managers office to praise particularly helpful employees so the manager knew me and knew I had never complained about an employee before.
I hope they made him put every item back on the shelves himself.
I just feel badly for the customers behind me whom I inconvienced by walking away.
-
We also went to Walmart's eyecare location and bought the Vixter a new pair of trendy eyeglasses. When she gets them next week I will post a picture of her with her new look
I seem to recall seeing the Vixter with lavender frames - and when I suggested she should get matching lavender streaks in her hair you both laughed!
der Brucer
-
And now I have to go shopping again in the morning
-
I will carefully check to see who is scanning before getting on line!
-
Vixmom, how frustrating. Good for you walking away. I'm rather surprised the management didn't offer to assist you & get things straightened out. Were they at least nice?
-
No self scan lines at our Waldbaums
-
I seem to recall seeing the Vixter with lavender frames - and when I suggested she should get matching lavender streaks in her hair you both laughed!
der Brucer
Yes, she is wearing the lavender frames now, and the streaks do match and look very nice, so thank you for the fashion advice!
-
I must go dry my hair. Isn't that exciting.
-
Continued TOD:
Peggy Lee "Is That All There Is?" (and almost anything she sings
Spike Jones "Cocktails for Two" and "Laura"
Eileen Barton" If I Knew You Were Coming, I'd have Baked a Cake"
Bette Midler "Friends"
Frank Sinatra-- so many but especially "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "I Get a Kick Out of You"
-
Another:
DRMusic Guy "When Day is Done"

Good for you, Vixmom. Follow up with a written letter.
-
Vixmom, how frustrating. Good for you walking away. I'm rather surprised the management didn't offer to assist you & get things straightened out. Were they at least nice?
The manager was very apologetic. I left as he went to speak to the cashier, I had no interest in redoing my shopping at that moment as I was too angry (and the Vixter had elected to remain behind in the car and read her book and I didn't want her to have to wait another 1/2 hour for me to refill my cart
-
Mr. Handy Man was here, but the job is not finished - he didn't like one of the copper connectors, which somehow got bent, so he's gone to a hardware store to get a replacement. He should hopefully be back by five, at which point I can leave, and he'll leave via the back door and lock up.
-
Good for you, Vixmom. Follow up with a written letter.
I just may. I will wait to calm down a little more. I just wanted to slap his smug, nasty face and send him to his room
-
I've written seven pages and am ready to start a new chapter tomorrow, although I may write a line or two of this evening. I also know there will be some stuff to clean up from today's pages.
-
DR Sandra has a orange milano cookie and orange juice club?
-
Well off to cook dinner. Vixdad is suffering from a horrible cold and sore throat so I am sure it will include some soup
-
DR Vixmom - How unfortunate! Some of today's youth need more than just a good bitch-slapping! :(
-
That sounds really bad, doesn't it?
-
***FEEL BETTER VIBES*** to the Vixdad!
-
That sounds really bad, doesn't it?
We're used to it....
;)

HEALING VIBES TO VIXDAD!

I just wanted to slap his smug, nasty face and send him to his room
I know how you feel, Vixmom.
-
Thansk for the vibes and teh support!! BYEEE!!!!
-
Dear Yoni,
I feel your pain.
Sincerely,
Meg
-
Gawds, the double entendre in my last post kills me.
-
DR Vixmom - may you have better shopping days in your future!
-
Well, this IS a family site. :)
But, if you must...
Go here (http://www.johnbarrowman.com/outabout/press/2006/attitude122006.html) and then search on "birthday cake."
Oh my!
That's what I call fun!
-
Speaking of fun. . .I once must again say THANK YOU, DR GEORGE!
I'm spending the evening listening to foreign tongues!
-
Well, the next time you're in the city, I'll have to take you to Grom for their Hot Chocolate. It's basically their gelato base heated up. Sooooooo good. Soooooooooo rich.
I still want to taste the basil infused hot chocolate. That sounds fabulous to me
-
She also asked me once again to thank all those HHWers for their cookir orders, withyour help she was able to surpass (by a couple of boxes) her goal of 100 boxes sold.
Please tell Vixter I would buy from her, but I have a neighbor who I promised to buy from and little old me can only eat so many cookies
-
I went supermarket shopping today and had the rudest teenage boy as a cashier......
You were absolutely right to go to the manager. And I don't blame you for walking away from that disaster of a cashier.
At our store (I'm pretty sure by state law) cashiers must be at least seventeen years old. Baggers can be hired as young as fourteen, but they are not working the registers. They have to be at least fifteen to wrangle carts.
I consider myself lucky to have a good working relationship with our two baggers, Kenny and TJ. I treat them as adults, not as kids, and they appreciate that kind of respect. We have a new cashier, age 17, named Caitlyn, who is similarly responding to the adult treatment. And dang, she's got the smarts!
The young workers who don't show any respect for the customers get weeded out fairly quickly. Your cashier wouldn't last a week at our store.
-
Good for you, Vixmom. Follow up with a written letter.
ABSOLUTELY!
-
I was lucky at work today - only one customer deserved bitchslapping. He was out to gouge as much he could from the store, trying to make me accept two coupons for the same item. Then he tried to blow me off by claiming the store was into "Game Theory." Whatever that was supposed to mean.
The customer behind him thought he was totally disgusting, and told me so.
-
OK, I've wound down from work enough now. Time to get dinner on the table, and then watch Torchwood with der B.
Or is that accompany der B in watching Torchwood, with John Barrowman and James Marsters? Grammaticaly correct, that sort of thing.
-
She also asked me once again to thank all those HHWers for their cookir orders, withyour help she was able to surpass (by a couple of boxes) her goal of 100 boxes sold.
Is it too late to order the cookies?
-
The snow & ice melted so we had a nice walk on the trails today. We fear a snow storm is headed our way tonight-hope the reports are wrong.
Rain vibes!
We were supposed to have snow this morning - we had rain. We are supposed to have snow tomorrow, Monday, and / or Tuesday. I don't think it is going to happen.
-
I know that different countiesd sell at different tiem. Here in Suffolk County we sellour cookies ans candy about a month to 6 weeks behind the Girl Scouts in Nassau County, so perhaps in New York they sell their nuts now...

I never knew that Girl Scouts had nuts. That might have changed my entire high school social life.
-
Good Evening!
Back from dinner....
MMMMMMMmmmmmmm... Malecon (http://www.maleconrestaurants.com/test1/)!!!!!
I blame Baayork for this one. ;)
-
I went supermarket shopping today and had the rudest teenage boy as a cashier...
I just feel badly for the customers behind me whom I inconvienced by walking away.
Bravo for you, vixmom! Maybe next time, Woody will be more careful.
-
DR vixmom - Hmm.... I probably would have one or two of the cans and...
"Oh, I'm sorry that can dented your foot... And I'm sorry that one dented your nose. You can't help that, can you?!?!?!??!"
;D
-
And, now... I bake!
:)
Laters...
-
The link takes too long too load here. I blame Jose.
-
DP Colin and I watched "This Sporting Life" last night. I've avoided it for 45 years because it is about football.
Richard Harris sings in the movie - and it's not "Camelot" and certainly not "How To Handle A Woman'.
-
TOTD:
Dusty Springfield's recordings of "Going Back" and "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today"
Rosemary Clooney's "Tenderly"
Ray Charles - "Georgia"
Eydie Gormé - If He Walked Into My Life" and "Since I Fell For You"
Dinah Washington -"September In The Rain"
-
DR Jeanne do you have any knowledge of BBC series "The Street"? There are two series available.
-

It sounds familiar. The one I recall, which I did not see, sounded a bit like EASTENDERS. Relatively new?
-
TOTD:
Ray Charles - "Georgia"
Absolutely.
-
Really tired.
Good night.
-
It sounds familiar. The one I recall, which I did not see, sounded a bit like EASTENDERS. Relatively new?
Good cast: Jane Horricks,Timothy Spaul and Jim Broadbent
-
and I would hope nothing like "East Enders".
-
Don't blame you one bit for walking away, DR Vixmom, and I'm glad you informed the management of his people skills (or lack thereof). No reason to tolerate that kind of disregard and disrespect.
-
I began my evening finishing THE JEWISH AMERICANS. I watched Episode 3 and the first of three bonus features. I'll have to get the other two done tomorrow afternoon so I can get the review posted tomorrow evening.
Next up, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - SEASON 3.
-
Next, I watched the next-to-late skating group in the ladies long program. These were the skaters in places 10-6. One little girl (aged 14) whose last name was Zhang skated a perfect program. In fact, she had been predicted to win before she fell on her triple lutz in her short program. Anyway, she hit everything in her long program, skated to "Ave Maria," simply brilliant.
-
Shocking story, DR VIXMOM.....good for you.
-
Does anyone have $130,000 that I can borrow?
-
Excellent TORCHWOOD episode tonight - with some fun teasers here and there - particularly at the end.
James Marsters is very good in his role.
-
Time for to go to bed.
Page Nine Bomba Dance.
-
At 10 (with the ladies final group recording), I watched TORCHWOOD which I had recorded at 9. Such a fun episode. James Marsters was a rascally villain, and I suspect we'll be seeing more of him.
I was a bit surprised by Jack and Gwen's conversation. I don't ever remember there being any romantic sparks between them during Season 2 (it was always Gwen and Owen at work, I thought). Now, she was acting as if there had been some big romance that Jack had never followed up with (and Jack's reactions seemed to reinforce the idea.) Either I'm not remembering key plot points from Season 1, or stuff has gone on between seasons 1 and 2 that we weren't privy to.
-
Hmmmm the photo didn't load.
-
I may not start BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Season 3 tomorrow. It isn't due until February 12, and I've got two films coming this week: Criterion's next release WALKER and John Cusak's MARTIAN CHILD. I don't think either one will get here until Tuesday, so I'm not sure exactly what I want to do next waiting for them to arrive.
-
Well so let's have a drunken cat dance.
-
The pussy cats is quick.
-
Does anyone have $130,000 that I can borrow?
Can you have it back to me by Tuesday?
-
Heading down to bed after I write a little bit.
Good night!
-
DR George, I'll have to go listen to Lainie's version again. I've alway been partial to Nancy LaMott's version on her Christmas album, along with "Just In Time For Christmas."
I didn't know about Nancy's version...I'll have to check it out!
-
Does anyone know the play "Almost Maine"? Is it a comedy?
-
I went to iTunes and heard the 30 second sample, but for me to buy the song, I would have to upgrade iTunes and the upgrade only works with Vista or XP, neither of which I have. :P
-
George, if you haven't got a hold of Nancy's version by tomorrow, I'll send it to you. . .
-
Just got today's mail and something wicked this way came!
Thank you DR George! :-*
You're welcome! ;D
-
George, if you haven't got a hold of Nancy's version by tomorrow, I'll send it to you. . .
:-*
iTunes would probably be my only option, I'll just take you up on that offer right now. :D
-
Hello all!
Well, the Bat Mitzvah was wonderful! I was so impressed with Nora---not only did she read and sing so well in Hebrew, but her speech (or lesson or whatever it's called) was fantastic--very thoughtful and delivered with passion. Wow!
And we weren't the most underdressed people there!
The ceremony was long because they basically did two serivces back to back.
Afterwards, the 80 plus attendees all crowded into Peter's apartment to have yummy catered food.
Many of Nora's girlfriends made comments in her honor and it was very touching. Egg creams were made by the rabbi's daughter. Yum!
-
A highlight to me was when Peter's nephew played the piano. He played a very fine rendition of Rhapsody in Blue---the whole piece (30 pages?) and then some Joplin and Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost Rag". (I need me a copy of that!)
He is also learning saxaphone, and told us that he keeps asking his parents to bug him about praciticing because he doesn't do it enough. I never thought I'd hear a kid say those words.
And...he was only 13!
-
So now we're going to pack so we can make a quick get-away tomorrow to see Jose and Larry.
FJL, I'm sorry we weren't able to plan more in advance---we're playing things by ear since this is such a quick trip and we had no time before we left to plan anything.
Next time... which may be soon!
-
As for Miss America, they ran cutdowns of the 2 minute pieces that I cut for SOCCER MOM, and TRADING SPACES. Those cutdowns were what I was doing at the last minute before I left.
-
Also on the Vixter front, we received a letter today from the Director of Fine Arts for the School District advising us that she was chosen to be part of an Honors Choir. On February 2 at 7 AM She and 9 others will be bused to St Paul's Church up on 116th Street where they will meet with kids from other schools in the tristate area , spend the day learning music and then at at 8 PM that night they will give a concert
Congratulations to The Vixter!! :D
-
We left the party at 10 and met up with Spencer, the son of our friend Jim. Spencer is in film school here so we had a good 2 hour sit-down at a coffee shop. Nice kid!
His father is the (Pulitzer Prize winning) political cartoonist for the Miami Herald so he's quite politically savvy for a ttenager, too!
-

GREAT mortgage news, DR George! Fantastic!! Congratulations. :)
Thanks! I just hope I'm not financially over-extending myself. ::)
-
Congrats to GEORGE on his refi! Don't spend your $130K all in one place. ;)
Sadly, I'll never actually see it in one place, all at the same time. :(
;)
-
George, congrats on your new mortgage.
Congrats to Geroge on refi...
Thanks, Jane and Dakota! :)
-
DR George, I was very fortunate to have a real estate agent who talked me into going for a 15 year mortgage when I bought my house with the result that I had the house paid off several years before I retired and was able to use the money I wasn't paying for the mortgage over the course of years to save up a nice little nestegg to live on now.
It was among the best decisions I ever made.
I know! Instead of it being paid off when I'm 70 (and three years after I've retired), I'll be 56! ;)
-
Congrats to Vixter on her new do of purple and Honors Choir!
-
Good for you, Vixmom. Follow up with a written letter.
I just may. I will wait to calm down a little more. I just wanted to slap his smug, nasty face and send him to his room
I think that if someone is old enough to work at the cash register, deal with and be responsible for money that a business takes in, then that person is old enough to deal with the repercussions of having that kind of "attitude." That was completely inappropriate and it should never be tolerated by the management of the store. I say fire the jerk. Just my 2¢.
-
Speaking of fun. . .I once must again say THANK YOU, DR GEORGE!
I'm spending the evening listening to foreign tongues!
Once again, you're welcome! ;D
-
Please tell Vixter I would buy from her, but I have a neighbor who I promised to buy from and little old me can only eat so many cookies
You could always give them as gifts. ;)

DR edisaurus - Ah, Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost Rag". :) There's also a version for violin and piano - which, at times, I sort of prefer. However, Bolcom has written a couple of piano rags, and not only are they published, but they've also been recorded:

Back from a VERY long evening of film watching. The DGA award went to the Coen brothers - my vote went to someone else.

I guess I shall now try to breeze through some notes. From our summery day we ended up with a huge rainstorm, which is supposedly going to continue on Sunday.
