Lord.....DRJOSE....now I remember why I don't go see shows like Spring Awakening....I liked the CD....but I don't want to sit next to people like the girl in that video....

And I actually don't think GWB has anything more to do with the closing of SA than God did to get DREAMGIRLS the Tony Award.

But, of course, DREAMGIRLS didn't get the Tony Award, at least, not for Best Musical. NINE won that year.

You are correct.....God just let them win six Tony Awards, but NOT Best Musical.

That's right. He let NINE win five just to keep things kind of equal.

And now DR MATTH reminds me that I saw Miss Judy Garland in Cincinnati in the mid 60's.....she was VERY VERY late, and her opening act, I think it was Alan King was not very good.....but it was fun to see her when she finally came on....it was an outdoor venue, like a baseball stadium or something....and this tiny little person came out.....and did a great show.

Judy also loved the audience.....

I have to say that of the handful of musical films I have on Blu-ray (CHICAGO, ENCHANTED, HAIRSPRAY, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2), DREAMGIRLS gets by far the most play. I guess it's because I loved the stage show so much.

I choreographed a production of DREAMGIRLS and I really love the music.  I guess my major problem with it - and it's with the book - EVERY step up the ladder anyone takes, every time someone gets what they want - it's because of a dirty deal or a personal betrayal or a lie.   But I guess that's Show Biz!

Didn't "Follies" win 7 Tony awards, only to lose Best Musical to "Two Gentlemen of Verona"?

And then there was "Cabaret" winning 8 Oscars, but losing Best Picture to "The Godfather" (which won Picture, Actor and Screenplay).

I couldn't believe it when "TrueBlood" ended last night.

That's because it seemed to have been on only abut 30 minutes.  Man that show goes by quickly.

I got a very nice thank you card from John's father today.  He thanked me for my part in the service last weekend.  It makes me very glad that I took one day out of my life to think of someone else.

I watched two TCM movies in my DVR cache yesterday afternoon.

The first was "Gabriel Over the White House" which struck me as quite socialist/propagandish.  Then I Googled it and learned that it was a William Randolph Hearst project filmed at the time Franklin D. Roosevelt was running for his first term as President.  It was intended to be a blueprint for FDR to follow.  Very unusual doctrine that Mr. Hearst had.  The president in the film, played by Walter Huston (I wouldn't call it a "superb" performance as others have in print, but it was true to the story), closes Congress and imposes martial law.  He also fires his cabinet which was, for the most part, "party-appointed" rather than "president-appointed", and then he goes about trying to make improvements (some of which FDR did follow very closely) and intimidating the rest of the world into paying the U.S. their WWI debts.  I don't see how the film could have ended any other way than it did.  Lots of alluding to Lincoln from time to time.  Hearst was a very odd man.  His "Cosmopolitan Pictures" unit at MGM produced the film.

The other film was much more fun, although it, too, had a political message at the end (it being a WWII comedy from 1952) -- a nice screen turn for Jack Benny and Ann Sheridan  ( never more beautiful) in "George Washington Slept Here" with Charles Coburn, Hattie McDaniel and Percy Kilbride.  The political message was Benny reading a "draft" of Washington's address to his troops in 1775 urging them to fight for right despite desperate odds.  This draft was found in an old boot that turned up during Kilbride's digging of a well.  ("Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" seems to have borrowed much of the plotting six years later).  It's lots of fun and only stalls during the speechifying.

Best live shows/concerts I've seen:   "An Evening With Dame Edna" which left the muscles in my face sore for about a week; and "Mostly Sondheim", Barbara Cook's sublime 90-minute concert.

I went by a little less quickly for me last night because I paused the show in progress to look more closely at Jason who looked very alluring in his post V-sex position in bed.

"George Washington Slept Here" is based on a Kaufman and Hart play about the invasion of celebrities to Bucks County and the movement that Cole Porter made fun of in the song "Farming." I don't remember liking the film much, and I don't believe I ever read th play.

I believe it was published in that Modern Library collection SIX PLAYS BY KAUFMAN & HART, which I once owned. Wish I still had it.

And now, I'm off to physical therapy. Gurjeet mentioned his wife last week, so I guess he's not free for our DR MBarnum. I guess I won't break his neck when hecomes to visit.

Does anyone here remember a 1989 NBC cop show called "Hardball" with John Ashton and Richard Tyson.  It aired only 17 episodes (or so).  My parents watched it and my mom recorded several episodes onto VHS and sent it to me in Italy.

I still have the tapes she sent and I spent Friday trying to get them onto DVD-R.  Surprisingly, I found five separate episodes in reasonably good condition.  I remember a sixth episode and it must be in a box somewhere.  The show was pretty good, all things considered, although an occasional piece of dialogue is howlingly trite, at least from the perspective of 2008 and many hundreds of cop shows since.

At any rate, the show "has" some interesting attributes.

Good Morning, once again...

Well, things are going a bit quicker here than I thought they would... Or there was actually less to do here than I thought... Or the perceived "mess" in my room wasn't really all that much of a mess... Or I'm just in complete denial.

Pick one. ;)

Wait a minute, hold the phone......the memory is working now.

Best RECENT concert/show I have seen:

Little Miss Dynamite.....Brenda Lee at the Pike Performing Arts Center last year.  If you like her, don't miss a chance to see her live.....she still rocks and has a great time with the audience.

AND - Mr John Astin doing an evening as Mr Edgar Allan Poe....he was GREAT!!!

OH!!  I loved John Astin's Edgar Allen Poe evening!  I worked on a show one semester at Johns Hopkins University where Mr. Astin is on the Acting Faculty.  A very nice man, and much beloved by his students.

"George Washington Slept Here" is based on a Kaufman and Hart play about the invasion of celebrities to Bucks County and the movement that Cole Porter made fun of in the song "Farming."

FARMING
Cole Porter

Here's a bit of news that's quite a shocker
Proving Mother Nature still has charm,
Quoting Mr. Cholly Knickerbocker,
"Get in the swim and buy a farm."
Acres of alfalfa, fields of clover
Suddenly enchant our top "Who's Who,"
So the moment all this row is over
What say if we go hay-seed too?
For

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Kit Cornell is shellin' peas,
Lady Mendl's climbin' trees,
Dear Mae West is at her best in the hay,
Stomping through the thickets,
Romping with the crickets,
Make's 'em feel more glamorous and more gay,
They tell me cows who are feeling milky
All give cream when they're milked by Wilkie,
Farming is so charming they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Monty Woolley, so I heard,
Has boll weevils in his beard,
Michael Strange has got the mange, will it stay?
Mussing up the clover,
Cussing when it's over,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
The natives think it's utterly utter
When Margie Hart start churning her butter,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Fannie Hurst is haulin' logs,
Fannie Brice is feedin' hogs,
Garbo-peep has led her sheep all astray,
Singing while their rakin',
Bringing home the bacon,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
Miss Elsa Maxwell, so the folks tattle,
Got well-goosed while de-horning her cattle,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Don't inquire of Georgie Raft
Why his cow has never calfed,
Georgie's bull is beautiful, but he's gay!
Seeing spring a-coming,
Being minus plumbing,
Make 'em feel informal and degage.
When Cliff Odets found a new tomater
He ploughed under the Group Theyater,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrites of today.
Steinbeck's growing Grapes of Wrath,
Guy Lombardo, rumor hath,
Toots his horn and all the corn starts to sway,
Racing like the dickens,
Chasing after chickens,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay,
Liz Whitney has, on her bin of manure, a
Clip designed by the Duke of Verdura,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

(Rejected lyrics include:)

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrites of today.
Digging in his fertile glen,
Goldwyn dug up Anna Sten,
Fred Astaire has raised a hare and its gray.
Clowning in their mittens,
Drowning extra kittens,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
Paul Whiteman, while he was puttin' up jelly,
Ate so much he recovered his belly,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion
Of our great celebrities of today.
Missus Henry Morganthau
Looks so chic behind a plow,
Mrs. Hearst is at her worst on a dray.
Tearing after possum,
Wearing just a blossom,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay,
Why, Orson Welles, that wonderful actor,
Has Del Rio driving a tractor.
Farming is so charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion,
Of our great celebrities of today.
Just to keep her roosters keen,
Dietrich that great movie queen,
Lifts her leg and lays an egg, what a lay.
Going after rabbits,
Knowing all their habits,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
So Harpo Marx, in a moment of folly,
Had his barn repainted by Dali.
Farming is charming, they all say.

Farming, that's the fashion,
Farming, that's the passion,
Of our great celebrities of today.
Lynn Fontanne is brandin' steer,
Sophie Tucker, so I hear,
Rides en masse upon an ass, hip-hooray.
Hoeing new potatoes,
Throwing all tomatoes,
Makes 'em feel more glamorous and more gay.
So Clifton Webb has parked his Ma, Mabel,
"Way Down East" in a broken-down stable,
Farming is so charming, they all say.

He is also much better looking in person than on television.....

He is of course Gomez Addams to most of us.....but he will also be for me ALWAYS Evil Roy Slade.
