Well, you've read the notes, the notes had tinsel and glamor, even though I didn't care, and now it is time for you to post until the tinsel and glamor cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: HUSTINGS!
-
I've been home for a while, but last night, I ushered for a concert by The Manhattan Transfer at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, here in Olympia! They were fantastic (as usual)! They performed some songs that they haven't done in a while, a few of their regulars and a couple of their newer songs. It was obvious that the audience loved them. :D
-
After the show was the gala. We ushers got to stay (if we wanted...and I wanted!) and I actually got to meet the members of The Manhattan Transfer!! I'd met Cheryl (the soprano) a few years ago in a solo show that she did in Seattle, but I'd never met any of the others in person before. I got to chat with Tim (the bass) and Cheryl, but not with Janis (the alto) and Paul (the tenor).
-
I also got pictures!! I got a picture taken of me with Janis and I got pictures of Cheryl (by herself) and another of Tim and Alan (who was also the original Teen Angel in Grease! on Broadway) with a woman named Gretchen, who was in The Fleetwoods. I think that she lives in the area. I also saw a couple of friends that I haven't seen in quite a while!
However, I left my memory card reader at work, so I can't post the pictures, yet. :(
-
Overall, I had a great time and it was a wonderful evening! ;D
-
And now, I'm going to bed.
Good night...anyone. 8)
-
just caught up butnow must leave for church
LATERS

BELATED Birthday Greetings to Elmore I am so sorry I missed it!
-
Good morning, all.
Sounds like a fun evening, George. Looking forward to the Manhattan Transfer photos.
Now, to try to catch up.
-
Nice pics from DRs Jose and MBarnum's adventures!
-
Tonight are the Emmys. Anybody here gonna watch?
I am gonna start at 6pm with the E! Red Carpet. I love watching the Red Carpet.
-
Good morning, all.
Coffee!
I will be watching and hopefully enjoying the Emmys in spite of the fact that I know so few of the shows.
-
Good morning, all! I slept really well, and I would have liked tostay in bed longer, but I have arehearsal for tomorrow's reading at 10am, and I must be out of here quite soon. We have the studio for four hours today, so I'm hoping it qoes quickly.
Last night was quite wonderful. I hadn't seen Elena since around 1975, and it was a wonderful reunion. We got caught up on family and friends. Her friend John prepared a wonderful dinner: salad, salmon, corn on the cob, and risotto, and there was far to much wine. I was quite soused by the time I got back to the apartment. I brought the host Godiva truffles, and I gave Elena several recordings I'd worked on.
So, it sounds as though other DR's weekends are going well: DR George, I look forward to your photos. DR Jose seems not to have lost his mind schlepping around with DR MBarnum, who like the Indians selling the Island of Manhattan, can be diverted by shiney trinkets. I noticed the body builder on the magazine in the photo, Mikey! Some things you can set your watch to.
More coffee!
-
And the word of the day is: HUSTINGS!
And The Song Of The Day Is: THE NAME'S LA GUARDIA

DR Elmore -- There's a chance that I will NOT make it into the city tomorrow. Someone who was to step in for me on something might be stepping out, and I can't leave it unattended. I'll know by tonight or first thing in the morning. If necessary, I hope I might take a rain check!
-
Good Morning!

Thanks DR Jose for a very fun day yesterday.

If you can make it, plese do. It will be rough, but we're aiming to hear the new script and see how the additions play. The new song is quite gorgeous. We're very happy with it. The reading's been moved from the 12th floor to Penthouse #1; take the elevtor to 12 and walk up the steps to penthouse.
I'm back from a good rehearsal wth director, producer and MD. Tomorrow will be a little shaky, depending on how much the cast remembers from last year and how well they get the new changes in the opening/

Happy Emmy Sunday to one and all!

Good Afternoon!
Well... Noon-ish!

Well...
I did indeed bike over to Voodoo Doughnut, got in line, bought some doughnuts, then some coffee down the street at Stumptown Coffee Roasters (http://stumptowncoffee.com).
It was a Very Portland breakfast...

In fact, it's surprisingly well known not only for it's donuts, but also for it's coffee (and legal(?) gambling games.

The Manhattan Transfer is one group that I've always wanted to see live and in person, but somehow, I'm either busy when they're in town or something else comes up. However, I have seen almost all of them on solo outings, including original member, Laurel Massé - as DR George knows. ;)

Oh....
And while I was in line at Voodoo Doughnut this morning, an 8-year old boy asked, “Mom, what’s Cock-n-Balls?” -That was followed by a stunned and knowing silence from the Mom, and giggles from everyone else in line.
:D
-
Great pics, DR Doug R!
-
Oh...
And after I left Voodoo Doughnut, I ended up biking around(?) the Willamette River. Due to some of the wonderful public art along the Esplanades, I ended up zig-zagging quite a bit. Consequently, what should have only been a 1.3 mile ride back to my hotel, took 14 miles. :)

Sunday afternoon greetings! Richard drove all the way home from Lima, because I was too dozey to drive while he napped. I had some lunch and finally (I hope) solved the sign in problem I was having on my iPhone. All is well in the App Store and the iTunes Store.

Just got the Blu-ray of AIRPORT and what a great picture! Such a huge improvement over the DVD which really makes it worthwhile. It's not exactly a great movie - it seemed dated even in 1970 - but it's extremely entertaining. And as I love travelling I enjoy films set in airports. The UK disc has no less than 20 different sub-title options!

Well, one of us has been to Vienna, one of us is touring the west coast, and tomorrow I'm going to - wait for it - Fort Wayne, Indiana! My sister is going to be there working on family history and I'm going to spend some time with her. It's just a little getaway - I'll be back on Wednesday.
-
All vocals have been comped and I'm now waiting for Juliana to arrive for rehearsal.

For DR Ginny!

This was the guacamole that the kitchen served up yesterday during the book signing, which went fairly well. I guess. I've never done one from behind the table. We sold more than 20 copies. And the guacamole was pretty terrific.
-
Um, thanks, DR John G, but I'll pass. DR Vixmom can have my portion...
-
DR Jose congratulations on the birth of your new cousin!

From DR Jose:

What about a white forest cake?
-
I got laden with swag yesterday. It was almost embarrassing. The first event, which I did not have to judge, came with a basket that featured an enamel cast-iron Dutch oven that must weigh more than 20 pounds. Wrapped up in it were a large bottle of Italian EVOO, Hatch green chile salsa, a bottle of wine, snickerdoodles and a jar of bacon jam.
The evening basket was from the margarita pour off. After eliminating four of the six finalists because they all tasted like bad margarita mix, they gave us each a bottle of margarita mix. Go figure. But the plastic bowl (not a Dutch oven) had caps, a T-shirt, a beer koozie, a pen, some Bud Light memorabilia, etc.

That was kind of the version my mom makes. Hers is a three-layer white cake. You cut the layers in half and alternate fillings of whipped cream frosting and chopped brandy-soaked cherries. The whole cake is frosted on the outside with whipped cream frosting and a crown of whole brandy-soaked cherries on top. Chocolate shavings are then around the outside of the cake.
It has long been a favorite of mine and one I would request frequently for my birthday.

Well, today is Day Three of Kiimchigate. After they snaked my kitchen drain on Friday, the manager found that instead of my sink filling up, it was now leaking into his bedroom ceiling. He spent yesterday laboring down in his own apartment. This morning he was back and tearing out my dishwasher. And now, if he can't locate the leaking pipe, he will have to tear out all of my kitchen cabinets.
And I can't take a shower or run any water in the apartment.

I would suggest a cake with an almond paste topping. Unfortunately I don't have a recipe for one. I do have a German friend I could ask for some kind of cake recipe if you like.

It looks like my cousin Kristine's baby, Ariston, will have a birthday of September 22,
And...
Both my niece, Alyssa, and my soon-to-be-arriving niece, Grace, will have the same birthday, September 23!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALYSSA!!
Congrats! My sister's birthday is September 27...you know what they say about late September/early October birthdays, don't you??
They're New Year's Eve babies.

Tonight are the Emmys. Anybody here gonna watch?
I am gonna start at 6pm with the E! Red Carpet. I love watching the Red Carpet.
I have to record it...and I won't be here this afternoon. My cousin and his wife from Oregon are coming today up for a couple of days and I'm going to visit them at my sister's house. I'm sure that we'll play Qwirkle or Phase 10. We may watch the Emmys there, but I won't be able to be on-line here.

Dampfnudeln (http://germanfood.about.com/od/flourbasedrecipes/r/Dampfnudeln.htm) with vanilla sauce (http://germanfood.about.com/od/saucessweetandsavory/r/vanillasauce.htm).
My mom makes it (she's from Germany) and it's delicious!! I would make a batch as a practice run before serving it to others, just so that you know what it's supposed to end up like. The recipe that I linked to says to serve with a tart fruit compote, but we've never done that. I don't think that I would want that...just the vanilla sauce, thanks. :D
-
I also got pictures!!

One picture with three people does not count as three pictures.

You would not know that she'd had any illness. She was incredible last night. She's always been the most energetic of them all:

Instead of waiting to get my memory card reader from work, I just bought a new one and won't have to worry about it anymore.
:)

And finally, here's Janis...and I got to be in the picture with her!

Oh!!
So...
They're New Year's Eve babies.
;)
I just noticed the last part of your post. I can assure you Craig was NOT a New Year's Eve baby ;D
Actually I noticed this immediately after my last post only I couldn't get my post to work until now.
Jane, it is nothing to be ashamed of. Lots of people drink too much during the holidays!
-
DR George that is a very nice pic of you.

She does look great...she did mention to someone after the show that she's still wearing wigs. I wondered about that, but from the stage, it didn't look like a wig at all.

LOL-He said a specific night & I remember that night well. I did not get pregnant on it though I accidentally had too much to drink. It wasn't that I had too much it is that they didn't serve food until midnight. Had I known this I would not have had anything to drink when we arrived at the party, many hours before midnight. When we returned home from an unfun evening we crashed.
-
I have felt puny all day. I'm sure it was all of the wine last night, but I am very tired and lethargic, I just had some matzoh ball soup for dinner, and I will most likely be in bed by 8pm.
Tomorrow morning, first thing, I'll run to the post office and send two priority mail packages, come back here and prepare for the reading. I have to be at the studio by 11:30.
-
Watching the E! Red Carpet now.
-
Good afternoon.

Where's Dan (the Man) been? Is he ok?
-
DR George that is a very nice pic of you.
Thanks! I really like it, too. Someone else kindly took the picture, so that's how dark it was. I was able to lighten it a bit:

FYI: the blonde woman in the center behind us is Tim Hauser's new wife. They just got married a couple of weeks ago and she's from Everett, Washington...and is obviously quite a few years younger than he is. ;)

That's a good question. And Danise has been gone all weekend, too, hasn't she?

LOL Very sure. At one time I knew the exact day both our boys were conceived. Knowing this was very helpful before ultrasounds could track the growth of the baby.

Today our Carnegie library is 100 years old.

George, you do know that they are telecasting The Emmy's twice tonight?

Congratulations to Uncle Jojo! Are the birthday twins sisters, or are they cousins?

George, you do know that they are telecasting The Emmy's twice tonight?
I do...I'm going to record the first broadcast so that if we don't watch them at my sister's, I can watch them when I get home. I'm also recording "Die Walkure" on PBS right now. I've never seen any of the Ring cycle, and I'm enjoying it.

Did you know that today is Mickey Rooney (http://xfinity.comcast.net/slideshow/entertainment-celebbday0923/2/)'s 92nd birthday?

My friend, Clark, who I did INHERIT THE WIND with is now living in Martha's Vineyard. He just sent me this true story!
Vineyard folks will appreciate this 'August People' story: I was on the bus to Edgartown the last week in August and it was packed. I had the first seat just inside the door with one seat left beside me. A couple in their 40's got on and the guy took the seat next to me then turned to me and said, 'Would you mind giving up your seat so my wife can sit down?' I stared at him in disbelief and he said, 'So is that a no?' I said 'I've got an idea. It's your wife, so why don't you stand and give her *your* seat?' They both glared at me like it was the rudest thing they had ever heard and he continued to sit while his wife stood all the way to Edgartown. BUT.... SUMMER IS OVER AND THE AUGUST PEOPLE ARE GONE!!! mostly.
-
And I forgot INHERIT THE WIND on my list yesterday.
-
Congratulations to Uncle Jojo! Are the birthday twins sisters, or are they cousins?
Congrats from me too.
I was wondering this as well. I'm guessing cousins?
-
I am enjoying seeing the dresses tonight.
There are a lot of prints. Not sure they photograph that well.
Some highlights for me. I really liked Heidi Klum's seafoam dress. I really liked Sophia Vargaras (sp?) from Modern Family in that teal/blue dress. She is so stunning. I also really liked Emily Van Camp (sp?) from Revenge. She looked really pretty.
There are so many nice ones to choose from!

Fortunately, no pledge breaks, but there was an intermission. I haven't been watching the whole thing, so there may actually be additional intermissions.

A number of mentions on the EMMYS Red Carpet about the heat. Who do these people think they are? BK?
-
I don't believe it. I received another Collection Letter from the home company that owns the hospital where I had my surgery. My insurance company, Regences, has called the company twice telling them that I don't owe them $35,000. They proceeded to tell Regence that they didn't know what they were talking about.

And now, I'm off to my sister's.
Be back later!

Worst opening of an awards show in a long time, in my opinion!

Congrats to Uncle JoJo!

My lower back isn't doing well & it hurts to sit. I'm going to try a different position on the heating pad.

Our wireless is getting wiggy - 'night!

Travel vibes for Ginny!!!!

For DR Ginny!
This was the guacamole that the kitchen served up yesterday during the book signing, which went fairly well. I guess. I've never done one from behind the table. We sold more than 20 copies. And the guacamole was pretty terrific.
that looks yummy!!

Go figure. But the plastic bowl (not a Dutch oven) had caps, a T-shirt, a beer koozie, a pen, some Bud Light memorabilia, etc.
oooh post a picture of the dutch oven --- I am jealous! Enjoy!!

Our church is a having an Oktoberfest next Saturday - there will be a German dessert contest - can any one suggest a German dessert I can make (other than Black forest cake? There are already about 12 black forest cake entries)
Thanks!
What about a white forest cake?
That was kind of the version my mom makes. Hers is a three-layer white cake. You cut the layers in half and alternate fillings of whipped cream frosting and chopped brandy-soaked cherries. The whole cake is frosted on the outside with whipped cream frosting and a crown of whole brandy-soaked cherries on top. Chocolate shavings are then around the outside of the cake.
It has long been a favorite of mine and one I would request frequently for my birthday.
I thought TCB was joking! I never heard of this before
-
Well, today is Day Three of Kiimchigate.
Oh no!

Do you really have time for baking?
I would suggest a cake with an almond paste topping. Unfortunately I don't have a recipe for one. I do have a German friend I could ask for some kind of cake recipe if you like.
I figured I would make it Saturday- the event starts at 6

I love this story. People are horribly rude everywhere these days. And if given half a chance, I'd show them rude that they'd never forget. ;D

Both Dan (the Man) and Danise have posted in the last couple of days, so I would assume they were doing OK. Dan wa the one who offered us Judi Dench "A Little Night Music" recordings.

Seven!

When I make the Chipotle Pot Roast Tacos recipe that came with the Dutch oven, then I'll post the photo, Vixmom.

In the last couple of days, I managed to watch in two parts the PBS Reba McIntire-Brian Stokes Mitchell "South Pacific." Best sung version of that score I may have ever heard. Really got to me.

I will have to thaw the roast first. So, probably not for a few days. And I might try it with that Hatch green chile salsa that was in the gifty bag, instead of chipotle. And of course I use lettuce or cabbage leaves instead of tortillas for the tacos since they are lower carb. So, don't expect the original recipe, but any means. But do except good.

Watching "In Which We Serve" tonight. Still very effective piece of propaganda.
-
Damn it.
DR Elmore -- I'm stuck here tomorrow. Sorry to miss the reading!! VIBES for a great day!

These little cups were filled with chorizo, black beans, corn and cheese. They were also served at the book signing and were outrageously good. Need to get the recipe from the chef. Don't look hard and would good for a holiday party.
-
I'm glad that Tom Berenger won an Emmy. He definitely deserved it.
But, the show was a total bore.
-
Since DR Jose has now run out of photos, here are the few that I remembered to take.
This was taken outside of HABIBI, where we had lunch. HABIBI is a popular Lebanese restaurant in downtown Portland at 3rd and Pine which I have long wanted to try out.

Had a good rehearsal with Juliana, and then went to The Federal to see a club act done by the winner of LA's Next Great Stage Star or whatever it's called. I was one of the judges and I voted for this gal and then she did a Kritzerland show. This was her first time doing anything like this - she had no director, so considering that she did very well. She could be a lot more comfortable and avoid the traps she fell into with a director or at least a pair of eyes to watch.
-
Giving a final listen to our master - it's pretty great.
-
Good Evening!
And what a Great Evening! And a Great Day this has been!
So...
-
My classmate, Amanda, took me out for sausages and ice cream.
For sausages, we went to Otto's Sausage Kitchen (https://www.ottossausage.com).
For ice cream, we went to Salt & Straw (http://saltandstraw.com). We both ordered "flights" of ice cream, so we were able to try eight(!) different flavors.
And it was great catching up with her!
-
Worst opening of an awards show in a long time, in my opinion!
We didn't watch any TV at my sister's house, so I'll watch it later. When I got home, I watched the third and final episode of PBS's "Broadway or Bust," the documentary about "performers preparing for the National High School Musical Theater Awards," aka The Jimmy Awards. It was a bit emotional and a lot of the kids are VERY talented.
-
Now, I'm going to watch yesterday's episode of "Doctor Who."
-
And then I met up with my friend, Bob, who teaches here in Portland, and also does work for Portland Opera. He walked me around downtown Portland for a bit, and we finished up with a beer at Urban Farmer (http://urbanfarmerrestaurant.com). What a great space! It's part of the Macy's/The Nines Hotel building.
And it was great catching up with him!
-
They're obviously setting it up for Amy and Rory to leave the show...it's already been announced that that's what's going to happen.
-
I stopped at Yum Yum donuts on the way home and got a mini-apple fritter. It was great. I blame Jose, of course.
-
And then I ended up having dinner at the abode of currently E&T DR JMK. He had noticed I was in Portland via my Facebook posts, and invited me over for dinner. So, I also ended up meeting his wife, Betsy; his two boys, Gabe and Zach; and his two dogs, BeeGee and Blanche.
It was great meeting all of them in person for the first time, and Betsy's culinary skills really did impress me - as they have other DRs. She did not make her "famous" chocolate cake tonight, instead she made a very delicious Apple Pie. :)
-

But, of course!

Otherwise...
My brother, Jay, has been texting me pics of Baby Grace every now and then... And each time I get one and look at her, I just start to tear up again. -And, yes, tears of joy.
In fact, it seems that Baby Grace even sent me a text of her very own. She mentioned how much she loves bathing "just like mom does". :)
-

Congratulations to Uncle Jojo! Are the birthday twins sisters, or are they cousins?
Thank You, DR Laura!
Alyssa turned eight today - or maybe she turned nine. ??? (Bad Uncle Jojo)
Ariston is the son of my cousin, Kristine. Grace is my brother's daughter. -Does that make them cousins of some sort? ???
*And I just realized that I did not call Alyssa today to wish her a Happy Birthday. :( (Really Bad Uncle Jojo!).

And now...
I really should pack my luggage. I have to head to the airport around 8:30 tomorrow morning, and I'm already kind of tuckered out after all of today's excitement and activities.
Laters...

Was just nosing around amazon and found a book coming out in November called Hard Times, which is a look at the adult stage musicals of the 1970s - but there's a huge number of pages about Nudie Musical and me, with lots of quotes from my There's Mel book and other interviews. I pre-ordered it, of course.

Oh...
Here are the two "flights" of ice cream my friend, Amanda, and I ordered earlier today at Salt & Straw:
Down the Left: Coffee & Bourbon, Strawberry Honey Balsamic Vinegar with Cracked Black Pepper, Brown Butter Popcorn with Pink Peppercorns, Aquabeet (aquavit and beets).
Down the Right: Horchata Sorbet, Amber Malted Plums, Feast's Oregon Bounty (salted chocolate ice cream with whiskey-candied hazelnuts with a Touvelle cheese buttercream), Chef Series: Ox (Foie Gras S'Mores).

Welcome fifty-two GUESTS!

I'll probably put it on three discs, then. Since I can only record to regular, standard not hi-def DVDs, that'll make it look as good as it can be. I can put it all on one disc, but four+ hours will be degrade the visual quality.

And...
My bags are packed.
My alarms are set.
And I'm sleepy.
Goodnight.
