Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a weird sort of notes, and now it is time for you to post until the weird cows come home.

The missing Indiana investment banker - Mark Schrenker - was found in a campground in Florida with one wrist cut.  Even though his wife just filed for divorce, police think she may have been involved in his securities schemes.  She denies it....through her attorneys.

Snow......started at 6 a.m. and continuing.

I was watching Fox 59 local news and guess who I saw?  Friend of MR BK, Barry Pearl, who is in town with HAPPY DAYS THE MUSICAL.  He was being interviewed about the show backstage at Clowes Hall.  He looked nice in his coral sweater and put a very nice spin on the show, there were silent clips of some of the musical numbers.

My question for ASK BK day.....what book or short story (other than your own) that has NEVER been filmed, do you think would make a fine film or mini series?

Druxy - Thanks so much for the useful insights about parody; it really got me reading.  Since my lawyering experience is limited to tax (law school was over 25 years ago for me), I didn't know a lot of this stuff about where the parody rules have developed over the past decade(s).

If anyone's interested, some fascinating (even surprising, to me) developments are recounted in this Wikipedia entry:

Jrand - I know, it's a little dry in the reading, LOL, but for example the stuff about Rick Dees - being able to parody a writer's work in order to parody Johnny Mathis' singing style seems like a big step, and surprising to me also.

Good morning, all! The laundry is in the washers and I'm finishing up my oatmeal as I type this. I was unconscious around 9:430 last night and I got up around 7, so that's nearly 10 hours of sleep and plenty for today. When the clothes go into the dryers, I'll take my walk, come back and vacuum, and return to Mr Loesser's score.

Later today, I shall head down to Toyland for some work before I see our office manager Matthew's band perform in SoHo.

I've got to mop the floors with pesticide at some point. When?

Yes, it is cold in the Northeast. Temperatures today are predicited to be in the 20s. It's certainly not as bad as certain Midwestern states (Iowa and Wisconsin and Minnesota come to mind) but it is chilly, even for an old former Minnesota Bachelor Farmer. Anthony is getting a slight taste of life in Wisconsin in February. Later this evening the temperature is scheduled to drop to single digits.

On tv tonight for me:

Another audition night on AMERICAN IDOL (2 hours)

13 Fear Is Real (i did not think i would like this show but the stuff they have them do is scary. Last week for the elimination they buried 2 people alive in coffins. I am claustrophobic and that would have made me panic like crazy!).

TOP CHEF NY!!!

And they are replaying the last 3 episodes of LOST before the premiere. i am definitely going to record this because truthfully without looking it up i have no idea what happened at the end of last season.

Believe me, before I wrote ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, I did a massive amount of research and spent several hundred dollars with a copyright lawyer to research the parody issue.

Parody protection is also the primary reason that I use caricatures of the various stars mentioned in the book, rather than actual photographs.

Incidentally, the artist (Dave Woodman) I used for both the caricatures and the book cover was a protegee of Al Hirschfeld.  You can really see Hirschfeld's influence, which is exactly what I wanted.

Good Stuff Eatery is Spike's new burger joint.  *And I find it very interesting that Richard Blais - who may be familiar to DR Edisaurus - also opened a burger joint, "Flip", in his old stomping grounds of Atlanta post-"Top Chef", and he's currently scouting for a second location.

Shower helped a little, I'm thinking coffee well help a lot.  I'm off this morning to have coffee with a perspective employee.  When I inherited my church job (in 2005), I also inherited a trio of "ringers" or "section leaders" for the "adult choir".  When they were hired, (before my time) they were students at the SF Conservatory of Music.  Anyhow, in November the baritone told me that he was moving to LA the weekend after Christmas to live with his GF and to work at some video game company.  That was great news for me because frankly, he was a handful and myself and the soprano and alto will be glad to be rid of him.  So, I began my search to find someone to replace him.  Anyhow, I did... however, he's STILL HERE!!  He hasn't left yet and his excuse is, "the job hasn't called me yet, but I heard they will - I'll let you know"

So, he hasn't left, I meeting with someone to take his place today - who I REALLY want in as soon as possible, but I'm stuck until he officially leaves.  IF he leaves.   He was SO certain he was going that the choir (who loves him, of course) threw him a going away party at one of the rehearsals before Christmas.  So there you have it.  Happy Wednesday!

I've always believed -- and had my suspicions borne out, as it were -- that when the National Football League began going for parity as it authorized new franchises and attempted to even the "playing field", as such, by restricting what teams can pay their players, that the end result would be parody.

Given that it used to take 2 1/2 hours to watch a 60-minute game and that it now takes 4-plus hours to watch a 60-minute game, I think "parody" is the direct result of "parity."

DR Matt H - do you know when the Lost episodes with the pop-up factoids began appearing as bonus extras on the box sets?  I don't think we have them going back all the way to the first episode, correct?

And even in the more recent seasons, pop-ups were not created for ALL episodes, correct?

The pop-ups have not been included on the DVD or Blu-ray sets (foolishly, I think). I don't think they've done pop-ups for every network broadcast episode either, but I'm not sure about that.

Well, to each his own. Sure EAGLE EYE has an outrageous premise, but as a stop-your-brain, popcorn movie guilty pleasure, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Sorry bk and DR Druxy didn't.

When I saw "Disturbia", I don't believe I had any idea it had, as an inspiration, "Rear Window."  Had I known, I doubt I'd have gone into it expecting anything remotely like what Hitchcock had wrought.  On its own, it has a great deal of tension and some captivating performances by young stars-in-the-making, which was obviously the intent.  Is it "a patch" on Hitchock?  No, of course not.  But then why should anyone expect it to be?

I haven't yet seen "Eagle Eye", but I will as soon as it hits pay cable.  I will not, for one moment, ever think, nor will I have ever thought, that anyone involved believed himself or herself to be "remaking" Hitchcock's "North By Northwest."    I would be setting myself up for HUGE disappointment, otherwise, and I know that.

"Disturbia" and "Eagle Eye" are pop cultural cotton candy.  The classics remain exactly as Hitchcock left them...unsurpassed and unsurpassable.

They'll probably only be included in the entire series box set, requiring us to buy the whole thing over again.   :-\

Here's my outre Ask BK question:

I started watching the 1953 (1952?) Prisoner of Zenda last night and was amazed to see the "two" Stewart Grangers actually touching each other, something I would have assumed the SFX capabilities of the early 50s would have precluded.  For example, when they meet, they shake hands.  Later, in the drinking scene, the King pats the commoner on the arm.  Now on the second one I guess they could have used a prosthetic arm, but I am really curious how, with the technology available in the 1950s, they got the handshaking scene.  Both versions of Granger are clearly seen, it's a medium close-up, and they quite clearly shake hands--I replayed it several times.  Do you know how that was accomplished?

ASK BK

What current group of Broadway performers would you use for one of your concept albums? (Peter Pan, Unsung ________, Lost In Boston etc)

I'd have to get to know their voices better, frankly.  No one, other than Julie Reiber, actually pops out at me, in terms of people I haven't used before.

My question for ASK BK day.....what book or short story (other than your own) that has NEVER been filmed, do you think would make a fine film or mini series?

If they could figure out how to do it, Richard Neely's The Walter Syndrome - quite a good little psychological thriller.  Same with Steven Millhauser's Edwin Mullhouse, a wonderful book about childhood.

I only mentioned the Disturbia/Rear Window and Eagle Eye/North By Northwest because people seem to always mention those things in their reviews.  For me, both films fail on every level imaginable - but that's just me and I'm glad others get some enjoyment out of them.  With Eagle Eye, I can surrender to any premise as long as the filmmakers then obey the rules of the universe they create and don't make them so outrageous and stupid that I keep being pulled out of the film, which is exactly what happens with Eagle Eye.  I never accept "it's just a popcorn flick" - I love those kinds of films when, for me, they work - these two and especially Eagle Eye, didn't.

Quote
A starry, likely once-in-a-lifetime cast assembled for what turned out to be a thrilling, unforgettable benefit reading of this Sondheim masterpiece, yet to be revived on Broadway. Some were revisiting roles played elsewhere before (Victor Garber, Marc Kudisch), but most were coming fresh: all showed up, despite the limited rehearsal time, with fully realized performances. Natasha Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave, the benefit's greatest casting coup, would have been more than enough on their own to make the evening special - Richardson's beguiling performance as Desiree capped with her nakedly emotional rendition of "Send In The Clowns", Redgrave's expert line readings bringing comic zing and fresh vitality to Madame Armfeldt - but all the casting was inspired. With her rare talent for barbing a one-liner, Christine Baranski has long seemed like she'd be a sensational Charlotte, and she was: the comic chemsitry between her and Kudisch, an absolutely ideal Carl-Magnus, was musical theatre heaven. I wasn't surprised that Stephen Pasquale aced young idealistic Henrik, but I was stunned that Jill Paice, an eleventh hour replacement for Laura Benanti, proved to be a revelation as child-bride Anne. Many have stumbled in the role, condascending to it rather than playing the girlishness with conviction, but Paice got it exactly right. As Petra, otherwise known as the servant who gets to sing "The Miller's Son" in the second act, Kendra Kassebaum was in the same league as Natascia Diaz, who brought down the house a few years back in the role at the Kennedy Center: high praise indeed. Because the full orchestra was center stage, and the actors seated to the sides except when needed at the row of stools at music stands, I sometimes found myself looking over at Vanessa Redgrave as she watched her fellow actors. Emotionally engaged, curious, highly attentive and ready with applause: she's not only the greatest living actress, she's probably the world's greatest audience member.

I think MR BK is correct and a traveling matte was used so that for those moments, the double's arm was in the frame, while the rest of Granger was still there.....sounds complicated to me.....but I haven't seen it for awhile.

It's kind of like Bette Davis in A STOLEN LIFE when in many scenes the body of the double stayed in the shot, but Bette's head was matted in......

Ever since the New York Times article this past weekend, I've been browsing the movie and TV show listings on Hulu.com    (http://www.hulu.com/).  I'm not too impressed with the offerings so far, but I did come across some episodes of THE DAVID SUSSKIND SHOW.  A show from the 60s, with guest Mary Tyler Moore (http://www.hulu.com/watch/46485/the-david-susskind-show-mary-tyler-moore?c=Talk-and-Interview), is so typical of talk shows of the day with a host even as supposedly high-minded as Susskind resorting to anyone or anything for entertainment.

Poor Mary...

We have been replacing them almost everyday - sometimes it works again if we just take the batteries out and put them in again - I think we need a new remote - the problem is its the one Cablevision supplies so I donlt know what is involved in getting a new one

If anyone is a fan of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens..this year is the 50th Anniversary of the plane crash.  The Des Moines Register has a really good tribute at their site and the Surf Ballroom (yup it's still there) is having a bit Winter party.

I was able to arrange to have dinner with a dear, dear friend from high school tonight - I am soooo excited about that.  And then after that, I shall be heading to Good Stuff Eatery in DC for a "Top Chef" viewing and Twittering session with Spike from Season 4 of "Top Chef".

That's very close to us! We will have to put it on our agenda!

And they are replaying the last 3 episodes of LOST before the premiere. i am definitely going to record this because truthfully without looking it up i have no idea what happened at the end of last season.

Since I reviewed the Blu-ray edition of Season 4 last month, I won't need to watch this, but if I hadn't, I would definitely have needed a refresher on all of the events squeezed into those last three hours of last season. When I watched it for review purposes, I couldn't believe how much I had forgotten.

I will watch it although televisionwithoutpity has really detailed recaps. So i could have done that too.

The question that is begged here is whether this re-airing will also feature the wonderful pop-up factoids that tie all the seasons together.

That's a good question.

The other reruns always had pop-ups. But i have not seen any promos saying they would do the pop-ups this time. But i hope they do.

I remember reading somewhere exactly how that scene was shot, but I don't recall the details.  Try a Google search and I'll bet you'll find it.

I just tried a plethora (a PLETHORA, do you hear me?) of search queries and got nada.

For what it's worth:

STOP MOTION (http://www.stopmotionanimation.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=23&topic_id=1270&mesg_id=1359&page=)

Quote
The complex 'twinning' opticals in the MGM Stewart Granger version are amazing and are the work of Irving Ries, with Warren Newcombe overseeing the matte paintings.

There are excellent examples where one 'twin' passes behind the other, holds hands with the other, passes a glass of wine to the other and so on. Alot of freeze framing and reverse playback on my part was carried out to 'dissect' the tricks, which as far as I could tell, weren't travelling mattes, but seemed to be more clever splits and body doubles with Granger's head matted on in one scene. I have lots of images of these if anyone wants to see them....

I know it was all done by CGI (or whatever passed for CGI during the 80's), but I was stunned by the "twinning" effects done to Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin in BIG BUSINESS.  The scene where they all first meet and we get this shot of Bette and Lily and Lily and Bette walking down a hallway towards the camera was one of those "Wha-wha-wha-wha?" moments for me.  I haven't seen it in years and it might even look primitive to me nowadays, but at the time I first saw it--Wow!

In MOTHER GODDAM, Bette Davis explained how she was able to touch/interact with her "twin" in both DEAD RINGER and A STOLEN LIFE. It's almost like a jigsaw puzzle the way pieces of film are seamed together to make the frame.

Then, I got down to business with EL NORTE on regular DVD. Great film, of course, and the transfer is really beautiful. Very warm colors in the Guatemala section, a little more neutral in the Mexico section, and neutral once they get to LA. No dirt specks or scratches at all; looks like a brand new film, to be honest. And the mono track is one of the most effective I've heard.

When the lights are down low,

Then go,

Youre out of luck,
Push your partner out,
Then you hunch your back,
Have a little movement in your sacroiliac,
Wiggle like a snake,
Wobble like a duck,

We are to leave work early today.

This is because of an organized protest march that will be leaving City Hall at 4 p.m. and will be heading to the Superior Court which is on the next block over from my building.  The march will come down our street and then make a turn toward the Courthouse.

We've been strongly encouraged to be out of the vicinity before the march begins as streets along the route will be blocked off, etc.

This is a continuation of the protests that resulted in a riot one week ago here in Oakland.

All is tied to a shooting on New Year's Day in which an officer assigned to the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system was part of a group of said officers breaking up a fight among several young men.  One of the young men -- all of whom were unarmed -- was pinned to the floor of the BART station when said officer pulled his gun and shot him.  The young man died.

Speculation is that the officer thought he was deploying his taser.  Several folks took videos of the police action that day and one of them clearly shows the victim subdued on his stomach with two officers holding him.  One officer then pulls his gun and shoots him.  This has really created a storm of protests, primarily because no arrests had been made until last night.  The officer's attorney kept him from making any statements and actually moved him to Nevada to "protect him" from several death threats he had received.  The officer surrendered himself last night to Nevada law enforcement and extradition has begun.

The DA has filed a 2nd degree murder charge against the officer.  But...lots of folks feel that if they hadn't "expressed themselves" last week, there would still be no arrest.  With that in mind, today's protest march is not considered "safe" for the general public.

From David,  Barber of Seville.

I guess for people of my generation. "Witch Doctor" is always paired with "Purple People Eater"

-and both Ross Bagdasarian and Sheb Wooley enjoyed long careers as singers and actors.

and of course Parodies are almost topic of the day.

Sheb Wooley (as Ben Colder) wrote and performed some classics.

"Ballad of a Mean Old Queen" (Ballad of a Teenage Queen)  is one of my favourites.

"Harper Valley (Later that same day)" and "Son don't Go Near the Eskimos" were probably his most successful.

I am not certain this recording is from 2003, however. I hope it's good; it can't be worse than the Chenowith-Lupone travesty. Or can it?

Team Mercer has been trying to find out what Henry Fonda film inspired the song Jeepers Creepers. As the story goes, Johnny and his wife Ginger went to see a movie where Fonda played a farmer and somewhere in the movie he uttered that famous line, kind of a toned down version of "Jesus Christ".

I had some fun viewing experiences tonight.

I began by watching partof a Bud Greenspan documentary on the 1998 Winter Olympics. I'd watched b its and pieces multiple times but had always managed to miss the part about the women's figure skating drama: Kwan-Lipinski and Chen=Butyrskya. Anyway I finally got the DVR to record it tonight and I skimmed through it until I got to what I wanted to see. It was about 20 minutes into the film. Very enjoyable.

Next, I watched GHOST RIDER recorded from Starz-HD which was just added to our cable system a few days ago (after I've been begging for it for years.) Now I want USA-HD, FX-HD and Bravo-HD.

GHOST RIDER was just OK. Never quite figured out the mythology of the character or how his powers quite worked. In the Marvel Universe, I would not put this near the top.

When I finished that, I took out my 1998 Olympics Skating DVD to watch the entire performances of Lu Chen, Tara Lipinski, and Michelle Kwan. Irina Slutskya (who finshed fifth) wasn't included on this commercial DVD, but I believe I did record her free skate on an old videotape. If I get some time this weekend, I might try to drag that out.

JR knows that Ricardo Montalban made his film debut in a picture that was to have starred Miss Frances Farmer--"Five Were Chosen," a Budd Schulberg script that was filmed in Mexico.  Frances freaked out and started appearing nude in the hotel squiriting people with a seltzer bottle, as Ricardo recounts in a great Television Academy archive video.

Got my replacement copy of Om Shanti Om, which I've been watching for the last three hours.  Other than the fact it would be better twenty minutes shorter, it was quite enjoyable.  If MBarnum or anyone has the soundtrack CD, does it have just the songs or also the background score?

A little bit.  I always bring something home, doesn't mean I touch it, but I bring it home ;)

Frances freaked out and started appearing nude in the hotel squiriting people with a seltzer bottle,...

Clearly a woman ahead of her time. Such activities in today's Portland would not even cause mention.

You can't make this stuff up, folks.

After years of working on political campaigns, I assure you, there is nothing that can not be made up.

Just stopping by for a minute.  I am not attending rehearsal tonight.  I have been sick to my stomach for the last couple of hours, and now I am feeling quite chilled.  I cannot be sick, I have leave time left, plus I have the memorial service on Saturday.

I am going to bed and I am going to pray for a miracle.

I just watched three hours of "Lost."  It's nice to have the refresher for next week's season premier.

*There's a Crumbs Bakeshop just two blocks away from Levain.  Just FYI.  ;)

Is there also one on 42nd St., across from Bryant Park?  Richard and I stopped in there just before closing time and there weren't even any crumbs left!

Yes, there is, DR Ginny.  Yes there is.

Wow - DR JOSE - he must be super talented or have a great agent!  Or maybe he is a HAPPY DAYS fan.

A little bit of both, coupled with the fact that this was, more or less, an "emergency replacement" situation.  He's a very talented actor and singer, and has a good face too.  ;)  If you'd like to see his face: Daniel Robinson (http://danielrobinsononline.com/News.html)

I noticed you are considering LACC as a venue for TFNM.

To much of the public, LACC=My Tax Dollars; have you considered the onslaught of Righteous Indignation from many of the Church Groups at the idea of their educational tax dollars supporting Porn, regardless of how tastefully presented?

Sometimes an over-reach of freedom of artistic expression results in a backlash that results in diminished support for the sponsoring organization.

OK... Time for me to finish getting ready here for my trip up north.

That's very close to us! We will have to put it on our agenda!

And besides featuring some truly gourmet burgers, one of his "gimmicks" are milkshakes made on the spot using liquid nitrogen.  "Flip" actually just received and almost out and out rave in one of the Atlanta papers.

And there are some great five-minute season recaps available on iTunes for FREE!

That's a good question.

The other reruns always had pop-ups. But i have not seen any promos saying they would do the pop-ups this time. But i hope they do.

For some reason, I seem to remember an article in the NY Times when they aired the first "pop-up episodes", that the pop-ups were being put together by a "third party".  ???  -And because of that, the pop-ups were not fully owned by ABC, nor the creators of "Lost" - which would also explain why they don't appear on the DVD versions.  -And, again, my whole memory of this may be faulty, but I do remember that ABC intentionally borrowed the "pop-up" concept from VH-1.

I'm not bk, but...

Have you seen what's a "typical" university/college - public, or otherwise - theater season looks like lately?  I'm pretty sure that in the not-so-larger scheme of things that TFNM is tame.  Heck, works by Charles Mee, Brad Fraser and other could-be-controversial playwrights are presented all the time by college theatre departments.  I mean Equus has become a staple on the college theatre circuit.  Nudity is nothing new on a college theatre stage.  Even at Virginia Commonwealth University - a State School - I not only MD'd a production of Assassins, but I also helmed an original music that had a character with an six-foot long penis!

*Alas, anything that might be construed as "anti-religion" is a different story.  The Laramie Project, anyone?

You lost me at "PORN."  If you don't know the difference between The First Nudie Musical and PORN I'm not sure how to help you understand.  However, that's what we're going through right now - the department, which has done many plays with nudity, is checking to make sure no one is going to have a problem with the nudity in our show - since it's not sexual at all, I'm hoping they won't.  IF they do, then I suppose we won't be doing the show for the LA Festival of New Musicals.

No matter where we do the show, I'm sure some group or other will have something to say about it, just as they did with the film, despite its R rating (not X).  Today, our little film, which has been ripped off so many times, would probably be rated PG13.
