Well, you've read the notes, the notes know no vacation, and now it is time for you to post until the semi-vacationing cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: GANGREL!
-
good morn to all
-
Good morning, all! I slept well, I think, and I'm up early so I can be one of the first folk to hit the 68th Street Post Office when they open. I have a few packages to put into priority mail and a package of photocopies of the Herbert lieder to send to Cologne. I will be finished, hopefully, by 10am.
At 1pm I'm having lunch in midtown with an old friend from my hometown whom I rarely see, primarily because his wife drives me insane. When I last saw them, I would ask him a question and she would answer it; in fact, I would guess that in the two or so hours, I spoke maybe thirty minutes and my friend spoke fifteen. That gives her a talking time of an hour and fifteen minutes, and she's not all that interesting!
After that, it's back to ROBERTA and its endless fashion show. I have to print out several lists of the McGlinnventory libretti and plays so that tomorrow morning I can go to the office and collect further information, like publisher, translator - 6 different editions of PEER GYNT, for instance! - and condition for the auction lists. Our paralegal is wnderful but literature and music were never ywo of her prime subjects.
TOD: HALLOWEEN II

Good Monday Morning.

Off to work.

Hope everyone has a stress free week before the holidays are here.

DR CILLA LIZ - kudos to your fast-thinking and fast-acting parents! Wow! A happy ending to the story!
-
I am intrigued by MR BK's description of the January release, although I know I should be able to figure it out.
DR ELMORE and DR JMK - I don't know what you will think of SF's THE LITTLE MERMAID.....she left me cold. Like DR GINNY, I didn't stick around for much of it, although I did make it to the beginning of Act Two where she was dancing in a box.

TOD:
Dr Kildare

Today is my last shopping expedition before Christmas....we shall see what I find.
-
Enjoy your day off DR JOSE.

TOD:
THE HOSPITAL w/George C. Scott
-
Monday morning greetings! Today I will take my mile-long grocery list and do what I hope is my last shopping trip before Christmas.
-
TOD - on TV, I loved ST. ELSEWHERE and I wish they'd release it on DVD.
-
JR, I have so many higher priority titles I must get to first, it may well be months before I get to THE LITTLE MERMAID.
-
Today for instance I must at least get out a rather good VH1 Storytellers on The Dixie Chicks and then if I can muster the energy the Lady Gaga Madison Square Garden concert.
-
I'm up, have announced, and am going back to bed for a bit.
-
The trip to the 68th Street post office took an hour out of my life, but it's so much a more efficient postal service than my Planetarium Station, where I would probably still be in line. The auomated priority mail service ran through my 6 packages in no time at all, and I stood in a rather long line for only 15 or so minutes to mail the package to Cologne; those clerks are moving at top efficiency, let me tell ya!
After that I stoped at magnolia Bakery for a pumpkin-pecan muffin, which I will have in about an hour with some tea.
For reading in line, I took Cecil Smith's MUSICAL COMEDY IN AMERICA, which remains to me still the best book written on American Musical Theatre. The book is now 61 years old, and no one writing since then has captured for me his grace, wit and perceptions.
-
It sounds like BK had a first "vacation" day kind of like my entire "vacation" is going to be.
-
I am listening to Anonymous 4's wonderful On Yoolis Night, one of their exquisite Christmas recordings.
-
I just called the Telephone Reference Center at the library where I used to work to order my January book group book and the Cecil Smith book that DR Elmore just mentioned. The person who answered the phone was the gentleman whose place I took when he retired 8 and a half years ago. Wow, I hope I don't have to go back to doing that when I've been retired more than 5 years! It was good to talk to him, though, and hear about his plans to spend Christmas in NYC.
-
What are these "books" of which you speak?
-
Betsy and I saw a really funny comedian a few weeks ago who based some of his routine on questions he asked audience members and he had a great riff on some poor young woman in the front row whose nascent career was in "publishing." :)
-
What are these "books" of which you speak?
THE NATURE PRINCIPLE by Richard Louv and MUSICAL COMEDY IN AMERICA by Cecil Smith. They will be waiting for me at the library's drive-up window tomorrow when Richard and I go downtown to purchase my Mother's Christmas present (tickets to JERSEY BOYS for the 3 of us).

That was yet another joke on my part, Ginny, as in what are "books"? I'll just start including explanations for my hilarious humor. :)
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
I just received an email with the subject: Meet Big Beautiful Women Online.
Why would I need to do that when I can simply drive to the Wal-mart? :)
-
I was out and about early running errands. I'm now listening to Songs from the Shows on BBC Radio Tees with the lovely Alex (a woman) Hall.
I have just placed a request for Musical Comedy in America from my library. It will be sent from the Lincoln Center Library to Jefferson Market so I can walk over and pick it up.
Mr. Moore, you're quite an influence on those of us who read.
-
Oh wow DR Cillaliz, just reading about your parents now. That was lucky that your dad was there and that he knew what to do. Your parents should be proud that they were able to handle things so well. I'm sure many people their age would panic and not know what to do. Hope they will get back home for Xmas. Glad they are okay.

I got my copy of Musical Comedy in America.....way back in the 20th Century.....at a library sale. Yes, it is a most excellent read.

Que es un vacacion?
-
People in the Picture arrived at my house today.l
-
Good morning, all. Still a few minutes of morning left.
-
Breathing a sigh of relief because I have finally turned in the last two papers of the semester. They are in God's hands now -- and the hands of the professorial review committee.
-
Thanks, Elmore, for tip. Will look for Cecil Smith's work. Another mind led astray, though my mind has strayed for a long time.

TOD:
Movies: The Hospital
House Calls
TV:
St. Elsewhere.
(And Ginny, I believe the first season is on DVD. I seem to recall seeing it at Costco a year or two ago.)
-
Seems as if Paul McCartney is joining Rod Stewart in the lineup of pop stars doing an album of standards. The short AP story said he was backed by Diana Krall and band, but didn't mention any of the songs. The album is to be called "My Valentine."
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And I slept about 12 hours! :)
-
By the way, there's a very deranged video of Barbara Eden singing "Don't Tell Mama" on www.BlueGobo.com. It's a six-minute striptease from a Bob Hope variety show and her voice sounds surprisingly good. I remember she toured in "Woman on the Year,' but I don't remember her singing being that good. Maybe because the score didn't call for as good of a range as she has.
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And I slept about 12 hours! :)
I got all of seven hours and I thought I was doing well. Am jealous.

Just as long as he doesn't write another ballet (for his daughter to design the costumes for). -I seriously doubt City Ballet will be reprising "Ocean Kingdom" after it's debut earlier this season. Alas, Peter Martins' choreography was more "responsible" for the general lackluster-ness of the evening.

Well, I think I'm still dealing with a little bit of a "sleep deficit" after last week's coast-to-coast and city-to-city travels. *And I still find myself trying to compute the three-hour difference in time zones for the east coast... even though I've been back on the east coast for a full week now. OY!

And...
Now I'm going to attempt to straighten up the various pieces of luggage and boxes I have here at my parents' hour, and then head out for some lunch as well as some Christmas shopping. My brothers sent out their kids' Wish Lists this morning, so the timing is perfect.
Laters...

Got another couple of hours sleep - not quite enough but good. Helper is on her way and we'll do Costco run - I'll either jog after that or later today, although the weather outside looks frightful.

DR John G, many professors think of themselves as gods. In fact, at Miami's graduation ceremony the music for the marching in and out of the faculty is "For All the Saints," which I find hysterically funny.

I do, too. Especially given the next lyric of "Who from their labors rest ..."
By the way, that was the song I fixated on the last time I had to go to the hospital for a kidney stone. I could only remember the lyrics to six and half of the eight verses and, man, in between deep breaths to deal with the pain, I crafted some strange lyrics to make up for what I couldn't remember.

Yes Good Grade Vibes for DR JOHN G.
I used to have a Barbara Eden CD......she did some nice songs on it......not sure if it's still around.
-
Hello, everyone.
Belated birthday wishes to DR PENNYO!
Belated birthday wishes to DR DAN(theMan)!
-
Kudos to CILLA's parents and vibes to CILLA! Ugh! Fires are definitely frightening.
-
Good grades to JOHNG!
-
Back from the office reunion Christmas lunch. Lots of turkey and other things to eat and drink. I now feel bloated.
-
I could really relate to DR JMK's remarks about having two weeks off except for A, B, C, D, and E. I would dearly LOVE to have two FULL weeks off at the end of each year. The week before Christmas is often taken up with pre-Christmas stuff--cards, gifts, etc, so it doesn't really count. And there's always far more that I want to do than I can squeeze into one week.
As for BK, working is like breathing; he'll never NOT do it. He'd be completely miserable!! Wouldn't ya, Bruce?
-
One thing I really SHOULD do soon is throw more out! I can't believe how things pile up! Much easier to clean with less clutter.

I, too, am looking for Cecil Smith's book.

I keep thinking the same. I've got stuff piled high in the attic and I must start clearing it all out in the New Year.

Last year or the year before when Barbara was playing in SOUTH PACIFIC somewhere, the reviewer noted her age by remarking that the show was about Nellie and her nurses NOT Nellie and her nieces.......

Oh my......I may be talking myself right into an episode of HOARDERS.

Just caught up with the rest of yesterday's posts. Sorry to hear about the fire, Cillaliz. Vibes for you and your parents. I can imagine how scary that must have been.

Well, I was ready to give up the theater books and was glad I didn't. I have needed dozens over the last few classes. And will need many more to come in the next year of classes. Maybe I'll throw out the unused things like pots, pans and plates.

It looks like there's only one review of Cecil Smith's book on Amazon. Perhaps Larry--or one of us hoping to soon read it--could write a brief review.

Actually not as bad as Loretta Swit, but not natural either.

Seth Rudetsky has written up a report on Ann Harada's Christmas Eve with Christmas Eve show in which she plays her Avenue Q character. This part about her duet with Norm Lewis had me in fits:
... they then sang "Wheels of a Dream," the Coalhouse and Sarah duet from Ragtime. Norm sounded so fantastic and Ann pushed Christmas Eve's Japanese accent to new heights. When Coalhouse sings "We'll go down South and see your people…," Sarah responds, "See my folks!" Of course, when Christmas Eve heard that Coalhouse would take her down South to see her people, her Japanese accent made her enthusiastically respond, "See my forks!"

The most horrifying thing is the marijuana necklace she's wearing. :)

Back from Kroger, which wasn't nearly as crazy as I expected. A lot of the people shopping seemed to be very indecisive or seemed to be people who don't shop very much. And there was someone standing in front of almost every item on my list ::)

Anything to get by DR JMK....anything to get by......

OH.....tonight on TCM is Dirk Bogarde's version of A Tale of Two Cities.
It really is my favorite version of the book.....Bogarde is so good....and Dorothy Tutin and Christopher Lee....
Not the stellar supporting cast of the Ronald Colman version.....but very satisfying....

Back from Costco - not too much of a madhouse. I was surprised to see them selling some really high-end clothing, a brand I've only seen at Nordstom's. They had sportcoats and this really nice heavier coat that kind of looks like a pea-coat but much nicer and is made of Marino wool, which is right up there with cashmere. I purchased it - not cheap - but I really needed a warmer jacket and the only jacket I have is really ugly-looking - this one will get lots of wear and will be great for the NY sojourns. And since I buy a coat once every four or five years, it was worth it.

That version of the film cried out for color. I saw the film when it opened in 1958 and was disappointed that it was in black and white. Bogarde himself later said that it should have been made in color

I find the Costco here has really nice quality clothes. You'd think they would have more junk (like Walmart). But every piece of clothing i've ever gotten at Costco has been extremely good quality. I just got a pair of pajamas there. Only thing I hate is the sizing. I always have to wear stretch pants and try the pj pants over them!

Today's moment of hilarity from the kids (yes, they got it off the internet, but it's still funny): Kim Jong Il's only mistake was not being Kim Jong Healthy.

I've seen Penny wear nice clothes from Costco. I don't like buying anything without trying it on, and there aren't any mirrors there.
-
Because this subject came up yesterday I'm curious how others feel. Keith & I said if we are on vacation & there is nothing we can do about it, please don't tell us our pet died until we return home. Craig said he would want to know. How would you feel about it? Of course I would want to talk to my vet if any care or treatment were done before hand.
The next thing that came up, so I guess the people did need to know, is that they want an autopsy to know what happened. I think I could leave instructions for that ahead of time.

I still haven't packed. Laters as DR Jose would say.
-
They actually had mirrors, and I did try on the coat and the gal there was very helpful. They actually brought her in just to sell this line of sportcoats and this coat I got.
-
Picked up one little package and an important envelope - really happy that got here so quickly - now if this week's can get here equally quickly that would enable me to actually finish paying all these damnable bills.
-
We've had more views on Outside The Box episode four than ever this quickly, but You Tube has been frozen at the 579 number for hours and hours - it's so not fair - you lose all the views it's getting and I know it's getting a LOT because a LOT of people have shared this one.

My first Christmas tree was more of a Charley Brown tree. Every day while I was away my cat climbed it knocked it down breaking a few of the ornaments. The following year I got a sturdier tree & put the soft ornaments at the bottom. I never had a tree climber, in the house, again. Oh, we also got a cat tree, the kind with carpeting.

In other news...
I made it to Stella's in time for a late lunch of her famous Brunswick Stew* and Grilled Cheese Sandwich - which, I believe, was the first meal I had her location near VCU 25 years ago! I also made it there before Stella, herself, left for the day. :) We shared a nice hug, and very quick catch-up session. It was really great seeing her again. Her daughter, Katrina, was also there. It turns out her son, who is now 22(!?!), is a student at Parsons in NYC, and her daughter is graduating from high school this spring. -I remember giving Katrina shoulder rubs between shifts when she was pregnant with both of them.
The food was just as delicious as I remembered, and I'll be heading back later this week for a loaf of her wonderful holiday bread, Apple-Cinnamon-Black Walnut loaf. The new space is great too.
It was a very wonderful way to spend the afternoon.
-
Sappy movies?
Victim movies.
Well, right now, they're running a marathon of sappy, victim Christmas movies.

*Brunswick Stew was one of the very first American dishes Stella learned to make when she came to the States from Greece. Her traditional Greek dishes are also quite wonderful. ;)

Checking the forecast for Buffalo--no snow for the next several days! It looks like it'll be one of the few non-White Christmases in years.

Make latkes for the first time that I can remember. They were made with buckwheat flour and onions, instead of potatoes, which Joan Nathan said in her cookbook. That's what was used before potatoes made it to the Old World. Delish.

Good Evening!
Well... It appears my mother has found a new favorite TV channel: LMN - the Lifetime Movie Network.
OY! and VEY!
My sister-in-law Jo loves that channel, too! I tell her it's the ALL-MEN-ARE-EVIL channel.
THE CLOSER has a great opening sequence tonight. But heartbreaking.

They look delicious, DR JohnG!

Just so you know, Bon Jovi is NOT dead: http://www.nj.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2011/12/bon_jovi_not_dead_rumor_was_tw.html
Duly noted.
L'il Kim is also not dead.
Pity.

TOD: St. Elsewhere

Still stuck on that same number - I wonder how many hundreds of views just disappear into the ether, and I also wonder how videos I posted of the benefits I've done used to climb to much more extraordinary numbers in the days when the counter didn't freeze.
-
Topic of the Day (not all of these are specifically in "hospital" settings, but they're at least medical):
Body of Proof
Grey's Anatomy
House Calls (the movie, not the TV show)
M*A*S*H
Quincy, M.E.
Royal Pains
Scrubs
Trapper John M.D.
I used to like Private Practice, but it just got too weird for me. :P

One thing I really SHOULD do soon is throw more out! I can't believe how things pile up! Much easier to clean with less clutter.
I keep thinking the same. I've got stuff piled high in the attic and I must start clearing it all out in the New Year.
As soon as you throw it out, you will need it, or someone will ask you if you have it.
Oh my......I may be talking myself right into an episode of HOARDERS.
"I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it...... "
e
this was a sign I had hanging up once I think it s in a box somewhere now

My mom also thinks that I'm heading into Hoarders territory. I keep saying that I should clean up...but I still haven't done it. ::)
The only difference between "Collectors" and "Hoarders" is the size of your house --- if I had a house the size of oh, say Ohio, I would be in good shape!

Thank you. They were.

The most horrifying thing is the marijuana necklace she's wearing. :)
I thought it was a lizard

Because this subject came up yesterday I'm curious how others feel. Keith & I said if we are on vacation & there is nothing we can do about it, please don't tell us our pet died until we return home. Craig said he would want to know. How would you feel about it? Of course I would want to talk to my vet if any care or treatment were done before hand.
The next thing that came up, so I guess the people did need to know, is that they want an autopsy to know what happened. I think I could leave instructions for that ahead of time.
I would not want to know until I came home

Donna Murphy just ordered a People In The Picture - I wonder if she even knows Kritzerland is me.
-
A package from Kritzerland arrived in the mail today. I'm assuming it's People in the Picture, but I won't open it until Christmas. No time to listen to it until then.
-
I haven't had a Christmas Tree climber since The Little Orange Kitten from a few years ago.
-
Why do I never get Kritzerland releases as soon as others, even though I'm one of the closest to BK? It's a plot, I tells ya.
-
Vixmom, LOLing at your lizard comment.
-
I believe it was either MBarnum or JR, those two aficionados of quality film, who may have mentioned the extremely outre K. Gordon Murray SANTA CLAUS. I'm not exactly pleased to say it's out on Blu-ray and I am in the depths of attempting to review it. :)
-
And...
Since I'm actually feeling a bit sleepy already at 11:13pm - and since I also have two "condensed" presentations of MFL tomorrow...
Goodnight.

No posts in four hours - that is hardly the holiday way and is more than a little pathetic, I'm afraid.
