bk, Diane Krall's new album, Quiet Nights, is being released next week. It is produced and arranged by Claus Ogerman. I've heard very good things about it.

Today's notes - beautiful and sentimental. In a good way. :) Hope you can eventually re-release the program.

This picture was taken at fondly remembered restaurant called Piazza Tomaso. It was torn down over 20 years ago or so and nothing was ever built in its place.
You might recognize Ted Zeigler as Johnny. He went on to be a regular on the Sonny & Cher Show (both versions
And also the show was called "Jellybean Comedy Clubhouse" but I never knew it as that.
There was the Squawk Box and Toomey the duck. I remember meeting him at one of the personal appearances and me and the rest of the kids were disappointed that Toomey couldn't come too.
-
Where I saw Tom Terrific and Manfred the Wonder Dog
Captain Kangaroo (http://www.gocek.net/captaink/)
I too remember the Captain. His theme music would play until he hung up his keys on the wall. I remember one time they revamp the set and when he entered there was no place to hang the keys and the theme music kept on playing and playing. He finally found a nail and put it in the wall and he finally was able to hang up his keys. He then followed a rope to the new revamped set. He was opening the doors to the Treasure House.
I also remember that I think that once a year they would show an animate short to the song Puff the Magic Dragon.
Let's see how many characters I can remember
Mr. Greenjeans
Bunny Rabbit
Mr. Moose and his ping pong balls
Town Clown
Banana Man/Clown ??

Good morning, all! Back to the Raines' concert. That's the story of my life these days.
-
And the word of the day is: DIPTYCH!
And The Song Of The Day Is: LOVE LETTERS
-
I was 8-9 years old before we got a TV in our house, so my early years were spent listening to radio.
The first TV show I watched when we did get our set was THE LONE RANGER. In fact it was the opening episode of the series.
I was also a big fan of Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers and, for a time, even Howdy Doody.
Back then, there was only one television station in Seattle, thus choices were limited.
-
TOD:
Philadelphia TV was a treasure trove of kiddie shows when I was a youngen. We had:
Sally Starr (hotstess of Popeye Theatre)
Pixanne (on whom I probably had my first crush)
Gene London (and his Cartoon Corners General Store)
Ranger Rex
Chief Halftown
Lorenzo
Dickory Doc
Wee Willie Weber
Captain Noah (who was actually for a much younger audience than me when I started watching him before I left for school, but he had Barry the Barometer to tell the weather and Barry the Barometer was NEVER WRONG!)

I leave on Friday for Wisconsin

re: last night's DANCING WITH THE STARS
*
*
I was very impressed with chuck this week. I had been so disappointed in how little preparation julianne gave him the first 2 weeks. But last night he was actually really good!
Gilles (and cheryl) were excellent. And of course so was melissa (and tony). I also thought lil kim and derek were very good.
Ty and chelsie also did so much better than i expected. And my heart went out to Steve O. Steve Wozniak was not great. But i thought the judges were way too hard on him. Obviously even if he was healthy he would not be great. But the fact that he was injured and still tried so hard to be on the show ... well i thought they should have at least respected that!
Lawrence (edyta) was also better to me than the marks they gave him. Yet david allan grier was worse than the good marks he got. I thought shawn was good. But not as good as the marks she got.
-
More TOD:
I also liked Captain Kangaroo. I also remember a short lived spin-off that was on early Saturday mornings, Mr Mayor (who I think was also played by Bob Keeshan.)
On Saturday mornings there was also The Storybook Squares, which had most of the regulars from The Hollywood Squares sort of behaving themselves and dressing up like fairy tale or historical characters (except for Charlie Weaver.)
And on PBS (or NET as it was called back then), there was Hodgepodge Lodge, a nature educational show for kids. The hostess was Miss Jean, a woman who was as dowdy and stern as your least favorite grade school teacher. My friends and I would watch and laugh our butts off because she seemed intent on making sure that the children on the show had as little fun as possible. It was just funny to watch--you had to be there.
-
I also really liked last night's MEDIUM.
Because her dreams are constantly changing, there is always so much we don't know and so much unpredictability. I love it!
-
No IDOL tonight. But I guess DWTS results will go on at 9pm (they might be delayed by a few minutes???).
But yeah, new MENTALIST and 10pm!
-
Not surprisingly, I was able to find a clip of Hodgepodge Lodge on YouTube. Here's a segment of a show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT4KtEPjDAo) which captured Miss Jean on one of her "up" days.

One local station WTTV Channel 4 Bloomington/Indianapolis always had afternoon cartoons. There were several hosts.....Sailor Herb, John Bee, and Janie. My sister's favorite was Cowboy Bob who did the Noontime Cartoon show.
A couple of late night movie hosts - Sammy Terry for Horror/Sci Fi and Selwyn who did Tarzan and Bomba movies.
-
Ah, yes, the MMC (Mickey Mouse Club)
-
Sammy Terry - followed by a LOT of local Indiana commercials from the 1970's....scary!!!
http://www.youtube.com/sammyterrywttv4
-
WTTV is now a CW station - used to be a WB station. Most of the local shows now on all of the Indy affiliates are News, Political, or Business oriented, and I don't think there are any local Children's hosts. This is the ad for a 50th anniversary WTTV DVD....Sammy is on the left, Cowboy Bob at the top left....and Janie and her puppets on the right second from the bottom.

Cowboy Bob was super sexy.

A little cooler today with highs not expected much past 60. It's overcast, too, though the rain isn't supposed to arrive until Thursday.

TOD - Detroit had a lot of local kids' programming (http://www.detroitkidshow.com) in the '50s. Of the ones linked on this page, I especially remember Sagebrush Shorty, Poopdeck Paul, Wixie, Milky the Clown, Jingles, Captain Jolly, and, of course, Soupy Sales.
I also fondly remember Romper Room, Ding-Dong School, and Kukla, Fran, and Ollie. The Mickey Mouse Club was, in part, responsible for my father finally allowing a TV in our house in the first place. He'd come home from work to find my sister at one neighbor's house watching American Bandstand and me at another watching MMC. He decided to buy a TV to keep us home. Guess who became the biggest television watcher of all?
-
Not surprisingly, I was able to find a clip of Hodgepodge Lodge on YouTube. Here's a segment of a show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT4KtEPjDAo) which captured Miss Jean on one of her "up" days.
I remember that show. The theme always drove me crazy, and i would try to turn it off before the show started. We must have watched whatever came on before that (Mister Rogers or Sesame Street or Electric Company which all started when my younger siblings were born, and so I'd watch the shows while taking care of them.
You could imagine this whole dark side to Miss Jean!
-
DR Druxy - very nice house!
-
TOD:
PINKY LEE and HOWDY DOODY were my favorites in my youngest days. Later, THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB was #1; I would never miss it.
Yes, I liked CAPTAIN KANGAROO during the summer, during holidays, and when I was home sick. Never watched it during the school year because we left for school before he came on.
There were a number of afternoon kid's shows produced by local stations, but I won't mention them here since they'd have no meaning for anyone other than me.

On TV Tonight!™
President's Obama's speech will air from 8-9 on all broadcast networks except the CW. Other programming has thus been affected by this event.

CBS - NCIS, THE MENTALIST
ABC - DANCING WITH THE STARS, PRIMETIME
CW - REAPER

Once again, I have nothing to review, so I'll be watching THE DIRTY DOZEN on Blu-ray unless something arrives. I am still expecting the review copies of BEDTIME STORIES and DOUBT on Blu-ray, but they didn't arrive yesterday. Their release is still weeks away.

I also have last night's CASTLE to watch while I eat lunch, and I should be able to find time for HEROES today, and if not, tomorrow while I eat lunch.

Oh, and Mr. Wizard! That's what I'd call my DH Richard when he put on his "Terrific Science" apron to teach science to gifted 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

HodgePodge Lodge looks like the kind of show that could make a kid into a manic depressive.
-
How could I forget THIS show, which, because of my last name, inspired ENDLESS teasing? ::)

A lot of that "Detroit" programming actually came from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, which is south (yes, south) of Detroit. CKLW TV and radio were huge media presences in the Motor City. When I was cast in The Bad Seed in high school, our drama teacher took us on a field trip to the CKLW studio for a screening of the movie (this was long before home video). He took us to lunch and we felt very much like celebrities.
-
This is the show that urged children to write with crayons on their television screen! Of course, you were supposed to use the special film that you had to send away for, but I always wondered if that distinction was lost in the minds of some viewing children. :P

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I really wish I could have just stayed in bed for a few more hours this morning. I did not sleep well at all last night.

We had the Winky Dink screen.....it was a pain and would never stay taped to the television set!

Well, in Tulsa we had Chief Blue Eagle, who would explain to us all about the Indian traditions and then introduce Chufa, I think it was, which he said was Chocktaw for Crusader Rabbit.
The local gas stations had sets of Blue Eagle glasses, decorated with his paintings of members of different tribes, and you got one free with a fill-up. The Five Civilized Tribes, as we learned they were called in school--civilized meaning that they had allowed themselves to be rounded up and fenced in on reservations while the Sooners and Boomers took all the good land.
For those unfamiliar with Oklahoma history, the State was originally total Indian territory, but in 1900 it was opened up for settlement. People lined up on the border and at gun-shot signal they all dashed in and laid claim to a plot of land. This scene was recreated quite vividly at the end of Far and Away with Tom Cruise and Michelle Kidman. As you might recall, they spent the whole movie coyly flirting with each other from Ireland to America. And the closest they finally got was a brief kiss right at the end of the film. Whether it progressed further than that is anyone's guess. ;)
To continue your history lesson, the Boomers were the folks on the line who took advantage of the land boom. The Sooners were the cheats who crossed the line too soon, sneaking in the night before to claim a piece of land. Oklahoma is officially called The Sooner State. No, not The Boomer State. The Sooner State. Sort of like calling Illinois The Mafia State.

Oh, yes, WINKY DINK AND YOU was a definite favorite. You could buy standard or deluxe models of that filmy screen to put over your TV. Funny, I never remember having any trouble keeping it on the screen, and it resisted being pulled off as I recall (I guess static electricity.)
-
I am heading downstairs now a bit earlier than usual because I'm going to head to the grocery store and pick up a few items I stupidly left off my list last Friday. Then, I'll come back, check the mail, cook lunch, and watch some stuff in the afternoon.
WBBL.
-
And the word of the day is: DIPTYCH!
He was always calling the bigger kids that. He thought it was funny, but his inability to sound an "s" inevitably left them confused rather than pissed. When someone says, "Hey, Diptych!" Are you offended?
-
The Romper Room hostess in Philly was Miss Connie. I remember she was nice and I always hoped she would say hello to me in her magic (broken) hand mirror.
I liked a lot of the toys that were marketed, er, featured on Romper Room. I had a pair of Romper Stompers and the Mr. Do Bee game that was a variation of Concentration.
-
I was cast in The Bad Seed in high school
Typecast? ;)
LOL, DR DAW!
No, I was originally cast as Miss Fern, the teacher, and then promoted to Monica Breedlove, the neighbor, when the person cast in that part missed enough rehearsals for Mr. Moldovan to "fire" her. Then, I had to wear a fat suit to make the line, "Anyway, I'm large!" ring true. Today, I could probably get away without the suit.
But, the girl who played Rhoda Penmark was really, really creepy - and I mean that in the kindest way possible. She was brilliant.
-
DR JoseSPiano - you have your own washer/dryer in your unit? That's a nice perk! :)
Yes, it is. -And I have a W/D in my apartment in NYC too. :)
-
By the time I came across Winky Dink, he was just cartoon segments that were on Captain Noah. I thought the writing on the TV screen was sort of nifty but not really used to full potential.

Detroit = Miss Ardis (aka Ardis Kenealy)
My dad made me a set of rhythm blocks, which I never used properly and which my sister still teases me about (along with my singing).

This gets better and and better. The site linked above has a great bio of Acee [pr. A.C.] Blue Eagle. It appears he was an accomplished artist, an authority on Native American Culture, and a college professor. He studied at Oxford and performed Native American Dances at Buckingham Palace. No mention of his children's show, though. And he died the year after we moved from Tulsa to Denver.
This big international data base has really become a time machine. How long would it have taken me to find this out through library research?
-
SLC had two long running kids' shows, Fireman Frank (in the mornings) and Captain Scotty (in the afternoons). Frank was a buddy of my father's, and somehow my Dad also knew Scotty, though I don't think well. I got on Capt. Scotty's show for maybe my 8th birthday or so. I didn't know it at the time, but the Captain evidently had quite the drinking problem and he was a bit on the cranky side that day. I had never been to a studio before, but knew some of the simple "lingo" like "set" and "lights," LOL, which Scotty did not take kindly to. When it was my moment on the show, he handed me my chocolate bar, slurred "Happy Birthday," and pushed me off the stage. :)
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
The PBS Block:
"Sesame Street"
"The Electric Company"
"Villa Alegre" - I guess that was the kid's equivalent of telenovellas. I never understood all of the Spanish, but I could make sense of what was going on. ;)
"3-2-1 Contact"
"Captain Kangaroo" usually started shortly after my parents dropped me and my brothers off at Mrs. Fischer, our babysitter.
"New Zoo Revue"
And then there was "Zoobilee Zoo" - which started during my senior year in high school - and only ran for one season. I watched it since it starred Ben Vereen.
-
"Heroes" -- SPOILAGE!!
SPOILAGE
Dlkjfkj d j;klj fkjlajka;lkj kjadf;lkja f j"Heroes" has been hit-or-miss for me this season, mostly "miss", I'm sorry to say. I haven't given up on it by any means, and I'm delighted to say that last night's episode is one of the most enjoyable I've seen since Season One. One of the main delights is HRG -- horned-rim glasses (aka Noah Bennett): Does anyone really KNOW just whose side he's on? Is he working for or against those with abilities? And after many, many episodes in which Hiro and Ando were very, very tiresome, last night had them absolutely delighting me. One scene was laugh-out-loud funny. I relished the entire, all-too-short, hour. And it was great to discover who "Rebel" is. That character has been too-long absent from the show. I even found myself feeling sorry for Angela Petrelli! :D Dlkdkjfkj ;lkaklj;l jafjka;lkja ds;lfkj ;lkjsfad;lkjasd;lfkj;lsjf;laskj; lkjas;dflkj ;lj sdf.

Topic of the Day - Part Deux...
And since I grew up in the D.C. area, I also remember Willard Scott's "Bozo, the Clown" on the NBC affiliate there, which was followed up by his stint as the original Ronald McDonald.
-
We had a local guy in Seattle back in the early 1950s named "Texas Jim Lewis". He had played supporting roles in some B-westerns during the 1940s.
He had an hour show 5 days a week, in which he would host an old Johnny Mac Brown western (or some other "B" western), then also sing. I recall he had this unusual "musical" contraption called a "hoot-en-anny".
He was a big hit with the kids. In fact, his kid went to the same elementary school that I did.

Hello, everyone.
TOD:
Captain Kangaroo
Howdy Doody
and, of course, Pamela Mason.
-
I didn't watch a lot of "children's" shows shows per se; mostly cartoons and, like Druxy, cowboy shows. The local kiddie host in the Cincinnati area, Uncle Al, just passed away a couple of weeks ago. He was something of an icon with his straw boater, red and white striped coat, and accordian. He was part of the WLW/Taft Broadcasting that went beyond local to regional and, I believe, Uncle Al went national for a year or so.
My other favourite kiddie host was Bob Shreve, who used to bring us Popeye cartoons and Three Stooges shorts, but didn't really come into his iconic loopy crazy genius until he started hosting the Schoenling Beer All-Nite Theatre. It was a wild and funny show. He was sort of our local Soupy Sales.
Elmore, do you remember any of these characters?
-
Good Afternoon!
The new dryer seems to be working like a dryer is supposed to work. :)
-
Oh, yes, I used to enjoy Soupy Sales, too.
-
In other news...
I don't have rehearsal until 2:00, but I need to get out of here for a bit just to clear my head. Just a bit "annoyed" right now, so...
Laters...
-
When we got to Denver, Spanky McFarland was hosting a daytime kids' show there, showing Our Gang comedies and telling stories about them. He was always promising to have Alfalfa on the show... but then Alfalfa got shot and I don't know what happened to Spanky's show.

I do! I could not for the life of me think of Bob Shreve's name this morning. I always wanted to be on the "Uncle Al" show, but my mother had some dislike for him, and she and her sisters were much more interested in getting on the Ruth Lyons Show.

Report on the Alphabetic Musicals Project:
Finished City of Angels on the way home yesterday. Started A Class Act this morning, and that's a ball game of a different color. I can believe Lonny Price as Ed Kleban, but from the CD Jonathan Freeman just doesn't make me think of Lehman Engel, even though the dialogue reflects some of his verbal quirks--such as calling us "kiddies" in class.
It is unfortunate that they didn't use one of Ed's songs that he wrote for no particular show. A bit off color, perhaps. It's about how to deal with life when your lover has gone. It was called "Do It Yourself".
-
Here's a little bio with pics about my childhood crush, Pixanne (http://www.cheesesteaktown.com/pixanne.html).
-
Does anyone here remember radio?
"Big Jon and Sparky" That was my first introduction to electronic media, even before we got our first TV.
And when we got our TV, our parents had friends over for bridge in the living room while my brother and I got to stay up and watch the one channel Tulsa had. We saw the Schlitz Playhouse of Stars, a live production, and as I remembered for years it was about a lady who got something in her eye at the train station.
It took a few decades before I realized it was Noel Coward's Brief Encounter, and it was about extra-marital adultery, and our parents would have had a hissy fit if they had known that was my introduction to television at.. what, seven?
-
And then of course on Sunday mornings there was Davey & Goliath:

Finally, ANYA had made its way to my office!
Loading it up on my iPod and taking a lingering look at the red booklet cover (I always loved a solid red album/cd cover for musicals.) before reading the notes.
I wonder if iTunes will find the track info and cover art?

I don't know about iTunes but I got Shrek, The Musical at lunch and put it into my computer CD player. Real Player opened and presented me with two options, neither one related to Shrek The Musical which is playing on Broadway. Both are the various movie soundtracks. I entered the information manually in Real Player and then used to option to send it to AMG (I believe that's All Media Guide). I made sure to put Musical Theatre in the Genre field. I wonder if it will do any good?
-
Good morning, good day, how are you this beautiful day? I am up. Finally. I didn't go to bed until two, so I guess I needed to sleep in this morning - now I'll have to catch up. Lovely posts this morning. And now I'll dive into the fifty-four e-mails that await, then I'll jog.

The show ran Monday thru Friday. You need two more pics.
-
My mother raised me up right. She didn't use the television as a babysitter. She sent me and my sister outside to play...
...and then she'd use the television the way it was supposed to be used, so that she could watch old movies and game shows while she did the ironing.
Which may be why I remember Concentration and Jeopardy better than I do Sheriff John and Engineer Bill.

When I was growing up there was not a lot for childrens shows...
I do recall Romper Room via CTV out of Winnepeg
CAptain Kangaroo
Electric Company (Always got a kick out of FArgo North Decoder....)
Sesame street (French and English)
Mister Rogers was more in the 1970s.
I very vaguely remember Kukla Fran and Olie. I seem to recall one of them was a puppet that looked like a bucked tooth lion with brown fuzzies. I think Ollie was the lion.
AFter we got cable, my sisters would watch Bozo the Clown on WGN out of Chicago.
A local WEather guy used to have magic show that ran periodically on the telly and we had SAnta's toyland that aired at Christmas time. We really did nto have much for local chilren's telly.
I do recal soem of the after school specials that were on TV in the late 1970s and early 1980s
However there have been some more recent shows I have seen due to baby sitting neices, nephews and helping out a few freinds in the last 20 years
Zooboomafoo
Zoobilee Zoo
Zoom 1-2-3
Read Between the Lions
REading Rainbow
-
Hmmmmm...
One of those people bears a passing resemblance to former DR Rodzinski!
Which one?? :D
-
I also recall something referring to a magic schoolbus
Big Blue Marble
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego
I also recall that there was a variation of the Crocodile Files with STeve and Terry Irwin that would be aired for a while on Saturdays. I did nto mind that show. It was a neat way to learn about animals and I do like them.
-
I also recall something referring to a magic schoolbus
Could it have been The Magic Schoolbus, per chance? ;D
-
I am finding today's post and notes rather intriguing since I have not seen most of these shows you are mentioning.
-
Damn! The New York Pops just called me about a job for next weekend's Charles Strouse concert and I had to turn them down. It was an orchestration for the great "Children of the Wind" from RAGS and I've got too much work at the moment.
On a more positive note, I just met my new doctor anf she's quite lovely, right out of her internship, I think. She's a vast improvement over my last care provider. I still wonder if he retired or was asked to retire.
-
Topic of the Day:
The Banana Splits
The New Zoo Revue
Captain Kangaroo
Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood
In Seattle, they had a local show, J.P. Patches, who was a clown. I never watched this show. I think TCB has mentioned being a fan.
-
Here's a little bio with pics about my childhood crush, Pixanne (http://www.cheesesteaktown.com/pixanne.html).
Dan (the Man), when I went to Pixanne's website, I had a flashback (and not the good kind ;)) and remembered THIS (http://pixyland.org/peterpan/) site that I came across several years ago. ::)
-
Noi review items arrived today, so I had another day off. I began, however, by watching last night's CASTLE while I ate my lunch.
Those cold-blooded kids! They gave me the creeps.
-
And it was cool enough when I went to the grocry store that I was wearing a sweatshirt and a jacket. Seems a bit warmer now, however.
-
Anyway, back to the afternoon viewing. I watched two episodes from Season Three of DANTE'S COVE. The show is basically softcore porn, but I find it funny that the gay men are so much more attractive than the lesbians. No need to try to follow the ridiculous supernatural plots. Just a pleasure seeing all of the man candy on view, though the fact that almost all of them are shaved to within an inch of their lives is a little off-putting. It would be so much more interesting if there were more a variety of body types and some variations in how much or how little body hair the guys have.
-
Then I opened the second season box set of NCIS and watched the first episode of it. The hunky David Keith was the primary guest star. William Mapother was another, and there was tiny Abigail Breslin playing a blind child prodigy. Very good mystery.
-
I concluded my afternoon with today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. The boys were on beginning their new story arc about discimination, and they're in the previews for tomorrow, too, with ominous sights to behold.
-
Aw, geez....someone has sent me a friend request and written a funny note.
And I don't for the life of me know who this guy is.
Face is familiar. Name is familiar.
But nothing's clicking.
So...I had to write and tell him so. I asked him to please refresh my memory if he wasn't mad at me for not immediately recognizing our past association.
I like surprises....but I hate not remembering things I should.
-
And it was cool enough when I went to the grocry store that I was wearing a sweatshirt and a jacket. Seems a bit warmer now, however.
Now, Matt, be nice and try to keep at least some of your clothes on. This is a family-friendly site, after all.

When I was just a bit bigger than a tater tot -- circa 1954-55 -- we had a local TV show (originated out of Augusta GA) called, I believe, "Hippity Hop."
The show was about a rabbit named "Hippity Hop" (a hand puppet) who had lived in a valley that had been covered with water by the building of a dam. The dam was at the Clark Hill Reservoir and formed a lake called Clark Hill. This lake is partially in South Carolina and partially in Georgia. The South Carolina portion is now named "Lake Thurmond", but everyone still calls it Clark Hill. (It was originally called Clarks Hill Dam Project in the late 1940s, but a clerical error dropped the "s" and all the signs were printed "Clark Hill"...so..that's what we call it).
Hippity Hop would regale us with stories of his kin and friends and how they were faring after relocation. The theme song was particularly wonderful I thought and I still remember a bit of it. Of course, I can't share the tune with you, but part of the lyric goes:
Heigh ho Hippity Hop
Come along and flippity flop
With Hipppity Hop

I am expecting UPS to deliver some Bond today....James Bond....in the form of Blu-ray discs of "Quantum of Solace" and "Goldfinger."
-
I had meatball soup for lunch.
I ate a bowl of it.
Afterward, I enjoyed some steamed veggies and chicken Dijon.
-
Three people are out today.
That is a good thing.
It makes for a good Tuesday.
It's quiet, but busy.
-
OK, afternoon internet surf completed, and now I'll do some computer chores and then head back down for more viewing.
WBBL.
-
Good Afternoon!
I'm back at my apartment between rehearsals. I just started another load of laundry, and now I have to take care of a few emails. And then, I believe, I shall nap.
-
Topic of the Day - Part Trois...
How could I have forgotten "ZOOM" - the original series.

As a kid in Medford, The "local" kids shows were....
.... RAMBLIN ROD, which was piped down from Portland and played weekday mornings showing old Merry Melody, Looney Toons, Popey, and Hanna Barbara cartoons.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_WriF8m2mVt0/R0CNIJB3fXI/AAAAAAAAAhc/pZUaGMJN7V8/s320/ramblin60s-01.jpg)
....and on Sunday mornings we had BUMPITY which was a green blob puppet and his friend Fred, who was a worm. It was more of an educational show.

...and piped up from KATU in San Francisco was CHARLIE AND HUMPREY, who would sometimes host movies or tv shows.

Are you watching 'em tonight? :)

I am caught up - what wonderful childhood memories! I am so glad DR WFO has rejoined our little band - he has been missed!!!
I worked until 4;30 today - I am exhausted
-
Now I have to drive the Vixter to a Girl Scout meeting...LATERS!!
-
Oh! A local show (from Seattle) that I just remembered was "Boomerang" with Marni Nixon! I don't remember much about it other than I knew about her from this show long before I ever learned about her connection to the "West Side Story" movie. :)
You can click HERE (http://www.seattlehistory.org/col_av.cfm) and scroll down to find a link to the theme song. It starts out with kids singing the song and then Marni comes in about half-way through. :D

TOD. Like many I remember Romper Room, Captain Kangaroo, then there were the locals Betty Lou and the Magic Window, and Kids Korner
-
And then of course on Sunday mornings there was Davey & Goliath:
(http://www.metroactive.com/metro-santa-cruz/12.14.05/gifs/davey-0550-family.jpg)
DA-A-A-A-VEY.... I think that's how Goliath said it
-
DR Cilla, please give Edith & her husband my condolences on their loss.
Thanks Jane, I will. She is being buried in a small country family cemetery. The bad part of that is apparently the family members have to dig the grave. Yikes! I don't think I could do that
-
After David and Goliath, we had Gumby! How can anyone forget Gumby and Pokey?
-
Gumby and Pokey
-
And since we may have snow tonight
-
Since I ended up spending 6 hours of my day off at the office working on books and other admin junk I hate to do, and since I worked through lunch....I'm going to go eat food!!!!
It wasn't all bad to be at the office today. It was wonderful to have a day with no one there. I didn't answer the phone (I did check messages and returned a couple calls), but mostly got work done that I hate to do but really needed to get done. I still have a lot of it left, but have gotten a system going.
-

"Educational." Suddenly a lot about MB has come into clearer focus. :)

I was just perusing PLAYBILL.COM'S CUE & A: Will Swenson (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/127617.html) and one of the questions was this:
Worst onstage mishap: During previews for Lestat (yes, Lestat) we changed a scene to include the revelation of a crucifix around which the entire following scene would play out and reveal important vampire truths. Well, one night I forgot to bring on the crucifix. Nice job, Will. Douche.
;D
Jose, did you see/hear about this?
-
DR Kerry, Wallace lived for a time right across the street from the church. And Sandra had Ladmo's granddaughter as a classmate in elementary school.
My sister was on Romper Room. Her teacher was later fired for being unfit to be around children. She had an out-of-country abortion because she had taken thalidomide.
-
They're HERE!
Are you watching 'em tonight? :)
Not tonight...too much GREAT TV on tap. Biggest Loser, NCIS and The Mentalist, dontchaknow!
But soon....I promise....
-
When I was in junior high school -- 8th and 9th grades -- a locally produced TV show, sponsored by Furman University and starring, I think, one of the university's speech teachers, was mandatory viewing twice a week in class.
It was called "How Do You Say It". The teacher had a (more) drawn-out (than usual) drawl, and she would intone of the handpicked kids on her show, "How do you SAY it?"
And the kids would intone: "How do you say WHAT"?
And the teacher would then choose one of many words regionally mispronounced on which to dwell.
It was all too much for most of us.
-
...And the kids would intone: "How do you say WHAT"?...
This reminds me of the entire driving test bit on Taxi:
What does a yellow light mean?
Slow down.
What does a yellow light mean?
-
I spoke to DR Danise. She sounds more relaxed, happier & hopeful. The people she is living with love Sheena & the arrangement is working well. Channel 28 said they might do some investigating. Consumer affairs said she has a case if it has to go to court. First they are going to work on him & see what they can accomplish.
She thanks everyone for their concern & support.
-
DR Cilla, please give Edith & her husband my condolences on their loss.
Thanks Jane, I will. She is being buried in a small country family cemetery. The bad part of that is apparently the family members have to dig the grave. Yikes! I don't think I could do that
I found this interesting & mentioned it to Keith. He looked at me and sarcastically said "Thanks for telling me" His expression made me laugh.
-
My sister was on Romper Room. Her teacher was later fired for being unfit to be around children. She had an out-of-country abortion because she had taken thalidomide.
That is very sad. I hope she found a good job elsewhere. My father had doctor friends who would do abortions. I suspect my father also would have done it.
-
I hope the news for Danise continues to improve. He truly is a chinchy bassa.
-
Jane, there's information on the Romper Room teacher on Wikipedia: her fetus had no legs and one arm.
-
Their story was also made into a movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105176/
It seems her husband was fired from his job as a high school teacher.
-
Boy it's been slow around these here parts for days and days - it's getting a little annoying, frankly.
-
And since it's been guessed at another site, I'll let the cat out of the bag and say that the new Kritzerland Limited Edition soundtrack, my holiest of grails, is Andre Previn's Two For The Seesaw - for me, one of my all-time favorite scores ever and one I'm completely addicted to and have been since it came out in the early 60s. The history behind this first-ever CD release is really interesting. The score features one of the best main themes ever, the gorgeous and sublime Second Chance. Mr. Previn's scoring of this film is nothing short of brilliant.
-

Who's Frankly? Is that a new DR?
;)

Listening to The Cowsills - it's amazing that the Beatles never sued them - a couple of these songs are almost note-for-note rip-offs.

Lunch with David was back on - we went to the Hamlet and I ate a large plate of nachos - I do love them there - no beans, no real heavy stuff at all - just a couple of ounces of ground meat, a little melted cheese, a little guacamole, and a reasonable amount of chips. No sour cream. I had a little dinner salad with it. I'm very full, but it's my only meal o' the day. We did the last of our Nudie fixes and came up with a great new joke for my character.
-
In the sad news department - my friend Richard Jones came over to get some DVDs and gave me the very surprising news that they had to put their beautiful and wacky dog Quinn down - very sudden - Quinn was ten, but the most energetic, wild, and wacky dog ever - he just suddenly developed a tumor that started bleeding and a few days later the doctor said it was hopeless and to put him down. I'll miss the Quinnster.
-
I guess I should finish packing up orders and get them over to the post office.
-
Bruce I'm sorry about Quinn.

As we walked into the vet’s office to pick Sherlock from his teeth cleaning two emergencies arrived. One was a teenage girl holding her little Ragdoll kitten. Her parents were out of town & she needed to find a ride before she could get the kitten to the vet. Fortunately the distraught mother could be reached to speak with the vet.
Needless to say we didn’t have much time to discuss the vet’s attempts to save one of his back teeth, in fact we left before she could write up the bill. Keith thanked her for the free care ;)
Our vet just called to see how Sherlock is doing. Of course we asked about the kitten. She had him on her lap as she was driving home & will be turning her bathtub into a hospital bed. He is being treated for a toxin, & just to be safe an infection.
Vibes this sweet little kitten will be ok.
-
~~~Vibes for the kitten!!~~~
Well, it's time to head home.
Until later.
Hi everyone - catching up on today's posts while sitting in rehearsal for The King and I - the schoolroom scene to be exact. Too, too fun.
I think this may have been several DR's favorite kiddie show.
-
Good Evening!
Well, we all survived "Little Old Lady Land - Part 1". I think. ;)
-
I had an interesting and very varied menu of viewing offerings tonight.
I began with THE DIRTY DOZEN on Blu-ray. I only had the old non-anamorphic DVD which was a weak, debris-filled transfer and which I hadn't watched in years.
The Blu-ray, while not perfect, was a tremendous leap in quality from that original DVD issue. A few scenes/shots seemed to be from a generation or two away from the rest of the transfer, but many scenes were just glorious to look at.
-
When I was perusing the list of Warner Archive titles the other day, I bough several Joan Crawford titles, but I noticed several others that I wanted to research a bit before I bit the bullet. One was MANNEQUIN, her only co-starring film with Spencer Tracy. I'd never seen it, but I did remember that I had it in the Joan Crawford laserdisc box set and had never watched it.
So, tonight I took it out of the box and watched it. An interesting melodrama with Joan's usual rags to riches to losing everything and starting over with pluck and verve story. (She was still making this kind of movie late into her Warners Bros. career, too, only there she was 20 years too old to be playing it.)
I enjoyed seeing her act opposite one of the greats, and she holds her own with him, surprisingly enough.
I also thought Alan Curtis was a dreamboat (though he was playing an utter cad.)
-
I was just perusing PLAYBILL.COM'S CUE & A: Will Swenson (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/127617.html) and one of the questions was this:
;D
Jose, did you see/hear about this?
I think I remember that.
I also remember getting the signal from the conductor to keep repeating a couple of measures. Over and over and over again. It turned out that the wigs on Lestat and Marius got caught "in each" other. I believe Marius' wig won. Of course since Lestat's mic was pinned into his wig, well...
And then we had that one performance where we wanted to try out a new opening - one of many opening sequences the show went through. We had spent the whole day of tech putting it together, and hoping that it would work. Since everything - lights, set, special effects, automation - had to happen at once and then in sequence, it was all coordinated with the "click-track" that the orchestra was playing with. We would hear a count-off of "1, 2, 3, 4" in our headphones, and then the conductor would bring us in. Well...
We get to the show that night, and we're all excited to see how the new opening looks. We hear the pre-show announcement in the house, the cue light goes off in the pit, and the conductor gives the downbeat. Then we hear "1, 2, 3, 4" in our headsets. SPOO!!!! I was up on the 7th floor with the other keyboard player - who was also the associate conductor - and when we saw the conductor start to give his prep, we just started waving our hands wildly hoping that he would see us. Needless to say, he didn't see us. So, we just kept playing. And started laughing.
A few measures into the brief overture/prologue, we could tell that the stage manager was blinking her light - signal for the conductor to pick up the phone. A couple more measures in, the flashing stops. We're still laughing and shaking our heads. That's when the conductor catches us in his monitor. He just smiles back at us thinking that we were trying to cause some trouble. Well...
A few measures later, we can tell that the conductor is hearing the click-track. And he notices that it is off by a measure. Ohhh...
After the prologue is done, the stage manager's light starts blinking again... The conductor picks up the phone, and, well... Ah, well.
And I don't think we ever ended up trying that particular version of the opening in front of an audience. Something new was tech'd the following day.
-
Next up was ICE FOLLIES OF 1939, but I only watched about 20 minutes of it. Joan got her movie contract, and then I had to stop it. I may finish it tomorrow since I didn't get any review items today. Looks like I may have another day off.
-
I was just perusing PLAYBILL.COM'S CUE & A: Will Swenson (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/127617.html) and one of the questions was this:
I also like what Will lists under "Special Skills". ;)
-
NCIS had a pretty good mystery tonight, and I wanted to kick myself for not solving it.
I guessed the wrong family member.
-
THE MENTALIST had another good episode, too, and another mystery where I guessed the wrong murderer. The British actress who was one of the primary suspects was the same one who played the loony stalker Lila on season two of DEXTER.
-
Evening internet surf is now completed, so I think I'll head downstairs and go to bed.
Good night!
-
I think I'm finished with my viewing and now I'll write the notes.
I also recall something referring to a magic schoolbus
Could it have been The Magic Schoolbus, per chance? ;D
possible...
Continued vibes to Danise....
DR Dakota, how's it going in Fargo?
-
Always sad when a canine moves on.....
-
DR JOSE did you get "un-annoyed"?
-
The wind is picking up and thunderstorms are predicted for the next couple of hours.
-
I have never seen/heard SEESAW, so I am not sure of my reaction to the announcement. However, I have never been given a bum steer by those in the know here at HHW! So I trust that it is something I will find interesting....at the very least.
-
I was a bit sorry to not find Claudelle Inglish or Youngblood Hawke among the WB offerings......but we did get THE BIG CIRCUS with Mr David Nelson on the trapeze!
-
Both of my writing assignments passed muster - so I don't have to do any rewriting....and now I can move on to working on Kiss Me Kate and MAN OF LA MANCHA!
-
Did I miss the "Seesaw" announcement?
-
Some of these children's shows look downright scary.
I remember something on Saturday morning about a little girl who had talking furniture....the table had jointed legs and walked around the room....scared me to death.
Sherry Lewis also had a show on NBC on Saturdays for awhile....I do remember Michael J. Pollard being part of her troupe.
I believe I did. I hope. At least for today. However, I have a feeling that I'm not done dealing with this "annoyance" since it involves the lease on my apartment in New York City. Just having to make some decisions in absentia so to speak.
So, tonight I took it out of the box and watched it. An interesting melodrama with Joan's usual rags to riches to losing everything and starting over with pluck and verve story. (She was still making this kind of movie late into her Warners Bros. career, too, only there she was 20 years too old to be playing it.)
I enjoyed seeing her act opposite one of the greats, and she holds her own with him, surprisingly enough.
I also thought Alan Curtis was a dreamboat (though he was playing an utter cad.)
What is the quality of these "burned" WA titles compared to the "pressed" commercial titles?
In the sad news department - my friend Richard Jones came over to get some DVDs and gave me the very surprising news that they had to put their beautiful and wacky dog Quinn down - very sudden - Quinn was ten, but the most energetic, wild, and wacky dog ever - he just suddenly developed a tumor that started bleeding and a few days later the doctor said it was hopeless and to put him down. I'll miss the Quinnster.
That's the problem with pets. You always outlive them.
I had to put down my cat about a year ago. Had her for 14 years. Took me weeks to get over it, and I stilll think about her almost every day.
For anyone who may have missed it, here's Mo Rocca's interview with Arthur Laurents from "CBS Sunday Morning"
UNSCRIPTED (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z43jBcjfbQs)
*There's some good rehearsal/B-roll footage.
I was a bit sorry to not find Claudelle Inglish or Youngblood Hawke among the WB offerings......but we did get THE BIG CIRCUS with Mr David Nelson on the trapeze!
There are a few of the WA titles I'll probably oder once I get settled in Texas:
A LION IS IN THE STREETS
RASPUTIN AND THE EMPRESS
AL CAPONE
ADV. OF MARK TWAIN
IDIOT'S DELIGHT
Will also probably replace my hommade copies of:
BETRAYED
JOHN LOVES MARY
WESTBOUND
-
Vibes for Quinn, the kitten, DR Danise, DR Dakota Celt and all of the Dakotas.
-
Jrand, all I can tell you is Previn's Two For The Seesaw was probably amongst the five most played LPs I've ever owned. And after I'd made a home-grown CD (full of ticks and pops - it was NOT a good vinyl pressing), I played THAT over and over and over again. I'm surprised you've never seen the film but maybe it doesn't show all that much. I have a lovely anamorphic scope region 2 DVD of it.
We're STILL on page eight?
-
Notes are written and I now have two hours of "me" time.
-
I guess I really will start shutting the jernt down at ten now. Reopen at midnight or in the morning. Me no understand. All one has to do is go back about one year and every year prior to that and you'll see lots and lots of late night posts made by late-night denizens. Now we get a few late-night denizens who come, read, and then leave without so much as a hello.
-
I mean, no posts since ten, save for mine.
-
I'm listening to Maggie Flynn - what a wretched score. And some of these RCA albums were really not produced well, with way too much distortion. You'd think that after recording as many as they'd done they'd have figured out how to set levels and avoid the distortion.
-
I'm talkin' about Ron Pulliam and Matthew, who are sitting there like so much fish - what is the word for such non-posting behavior - willful?
-
Hard-headed?
-
Stubborn?
-
Twenty three minutes to notes and then I'm goin' to bed.
-
And no one can say boo about it.
-
Thanks to me no one can say we didn't get to page nine.
-
Well here I am again, right before midnight, I don't have a clue as to what I do with the time between work and sleep, but it's never enough.
The first TV I had in my room would have been at maybe 16, almost never watched it. It was always the telephone. I could be on the phone for hours with Laurie, who knows what we talked about.
-
Goodnight everyone. Have a good Wednesday.
-
P.S. I hope BK does find the Wattles Mansion interview and transfers it to DVD.
DR Dakota, how's it going in Fargo?
Not too bad... STudents and volunteers are bagging sand like demons.... The river is rising... It is now standing at 33 feet.
Ironically, now we have a winter storm.. If the river freezes high we will have some serious issues...
-
They want to place bags before it freezes up too much...
-
ND has been declared a disaster area due to flooding and then the storm in tehcentral part of the state which is exacerbating flooding woes there also...
Fargo will have a second crest after the one this weekend. That crest will come when the snowpack in the Upper Sheyenne river valley melts and makes its way to the Red. I also hear that the Missouri is on the rise...
Um... Cilla, that might be headed your way....
-
Oh... yes, they are sandbagging in a storm aka flizzard....
-
I am not even sure what day it is....
-
Yep, only in this area do we sandbag in a snowstorm..... Go figure!
Oddly the same thing happened in 1997.... I hope this is not an omen
-
I am firmly convinced that the gods are crazy....
-
Parts of rural MN and ND there is not school and some towns are being advised not to use water due to overtaxing the lift stations....
-
Some fields have so much water over a long distance it sort of looks like you are in the bayou country of Louisiana
