Topic of the Day...going through Billy Wilder's IMDb listing (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000697/), I think that these are most (if not all) of the Billy Wilder movies that I've seen (not that many, I know), but I like them all:

The Apartment
The Front Page
Irma la Douce
The Lost Weekend
The Seven Year Itch
Some Like It Hot
Sunset Blvd.

Good morning, all! I got about two hours worth of sleep before the oaf above me came trampng home at 12:33am; I checked the clock. Sometime after that, i fell back to sleep ad slept very well. I did hae one peculiar dream: my cousin Elaine, whom I've not seen in at least 35 years, and I were at some airport getting ready to fly somewhere. At least she wasn't Jackie Gleason.

So, today is another McGlinnventory day. Yesterday, we finished unpacking all of the plays - anybody want a complete set of the plays of Carlo Goldoni in the original Italian? -  and the books and began the process of alphabetizing them by author and sortign them by category. The executor and I are butting heads over pricing the scores: he says 10% off and I think h's so far off the mark it's ridiculous. The 30-volume Richard Strauss Edition of the entire works in Full Score sells for $2750; McGlinn's written in some of them, and the executor thinks the markings of a "famous conductor like John McGlinn" might be worth something so we should sell them at 10% off the price. I believe anyone buying the entire set of Richard Strauss scores isn't buying them for the notes of a fraud like McGlinn but most likely a conducting student or young conductor out to get an inexpensive used set of scores, and I think we should sell them at 50% discount, going higher on something in better condition.

http://www.tfront.com/p-117922-orchestral-works-richard-strauss-edition-vols-19-30.aspx

This will be an interestng period debating the pros and cons of pricing this collection.

TOD: I'm split on the works of Billy Wilder. I love some of his films ("The Apartment," "Some Like It Hot"), thought he was a great screenwriter ("Ninotchka") and truly awful at times ("Fedora," "A Foreign Affair"). But my fave is "Double Indemnity" and favorite line comes from that one: "She was a tramp from a long line of tramps."

Another line comes from the flawed but still swell PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (with a great score by the great Miklos Rozsa.  The doorbell rings at 22b Baker St.  Late at night, neither Holmes or Watson are expecting a visitor.  Watson suggests:  "Perhaps Mrs. Hudson is entertaining."  Holmes replies:  "I've never found her so."

Hey everybody.  Nothing to report.  One of my camp shows opens tonight.  It's ready and rather good.  Personally, I'm still battling some sort of "revenge" (as in not Montazuma) this has been going on since last Friday.  If it doesn't clear up, the Dr suggests some tests.  I have no other flu symptoms or anything, so I'm ruling out infection.  Some people are guessing it's stress.  I wish I could slow down a bit, but I really can't until Monday, August 9 when the whole camp thing is over.  In the meantime, it's bland food...

Greetings from Toyland! I walked over from the McGlinnventory to drop off some music and to pick up some things I need to work on. The air is cooler and the breezes are cool to the skin but there's a sharp, very warm stream of air floating under the surface. I will head to the pharmacy next for some prescription refills.

I guess Young Fella -4 Years Translates to 28

 A Most Happy Fella!Sherlock

A Most Happy Birthday To You

Cute. :D

I never think in people years so I'll have to trust you he is 28 ;)

7 people years for every dog year.  Next year at this time, he will be the equivalent of 35 people years.

I am pleased to report that I actually slept through the night for the first time since June.  Yup, I can't remember sleeping all night without waking up coughing or just waking up since June.  8 1/2 hours.  Woo and hoo..  The inhaler has gotten rid of my cough completely.  I can't believe the difference.

Best birthday present I can think of.

RE: THE NEIGHBOR. It is the first book listed as a DD Warren (detective) novel. However I believe that she is a character in HIDE. So I may get that from my library.

One thing that i noticed about the book (which i found different) was that usually when you have a detective series they are the star of the book (the book is from their point of view and about them solving a case). But in THE NEIGHBOR, it is told from various points of view. And interestingly there is so much we did not learn about the detective. Although maybe we learn some things in the book HIDE where she is friends with the lead cop of that book.

By total chance (or was it--CUE OMINOUS MUSIC), I clicked on the story of the Virginia woman who's about to be executed.  I was stunned to see one of the gunmen who killed her husband and stepson (at her behest) shares the same surname as my mother's maiden name.  It's a rather rare name, so methinks I'm distantly related.  Oy.

I don't think the books relate to each other. So you can read them out of order.

I'm pretty sure that DD Warren is in ALONE and HIDE.  But THE NEIGHBOR and LIVE TO TELL are shown as DD Warren series.  She is in the first two. But this cop Bobby Dodge (who is a friend of hers) is the lead guy in ALONE and HIDE. I'm curious how much she is in those first two books.

Jerry: I'm engaged.

Joe: Congratulations. Who's the lucky girl?
Shakes the maracas Humming the tango
Jerry: I am!
Shakes the maracas Humming the tango
Joe: What?
Jerry: Osgood proposed to me. We're planning a June wedding.
Shakes the maracas Humming the tango
Joe: What are you talking? You can't marry Osgood!
Jerry: You think he's too old for me?
Joe: Jerry you can't be serious!
Jerry: Why not? He keeps on marrying girls all the time!
Joe: But you're not a girl, you're a guy! And why would a guy want to marry a guy?
Jerry:SECURITY!

The reason for the maraca/humming the tango is that people were laughing so much that they were laughing so hard they were missing the other lines. So Wilder reshot the scene with the interlude so that the audience would here the other lines.

Osgood: Why not?
Jerry: Well, in the first place, I'm not a natural blonde.
Osgood: Doesn't matter.
Jerry: I smoke! I smoke all the time!
Osgood: I don't care.
Jerry: Well, I have a terrible past. For three years now, I've been living with a saxophone player.
Osgood: I forgive you.
Jerry: [tragically] I can never have children!
Osgood: We can adopt some.
Jerry: But you don't understand, Osgood!

Jerry: I'm a man!
Osgood: Well, nobody's perfect!

Sheriff shuts down biker party in Cartersville
StoryDiscussionPosted: Wednesday, July 28, 2010 5:09 pm | 1 Comment
Cartersville, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say they shut down a wild party at a private pond in Cartersville on the RAGBRAI bike tour route after swimmers started taking off their clothes.

Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals says "one out of every 10" of the thousands of people estimated to be at the pond Wednesday were either not wearing shorts or were topless.

Pals says many partyers were "alcohol-impaired," but there were no arrests.

Deputies and the State Patrol RAGBRAI alcohol team shut the party down about 2:30 p.m.

The RAGBRAI alcohol team is a special group of officers who follow the ride across Iowa, making sure that riders leave each community early enough so they're not on the route in the dark.

Just another Wednesday afternoon in Iowa

Yeah, but what's the big deal if they weren't wearing shorts?   A nice pair of slacks and a dinner jacket would do nicely, whether or not shorts were worn.

Or maybe some knickerbockers.

They've been doing that for years. But I think they take it to the extreme nowadays. Filmmakers don't trust themselves, but let preview audience dictate how a film should come out.

No periods at the end of these thoughts just for fun
