Well, you've read the notes, the notes went bump in the night, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - when will they come home? The shadow knows and the shadow ain't talkin'.

And the word of the day is: LEVANT!

Thanks to Ben for the suggestion of going up the "rock".

TOTD - "The Innocents"
-
Topic of the Day: "Beware! The Blob (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068271/)."
-
No, really! I saw this late at night on TV with my sister and some friends when I was probably seven or eight years old but never saw the end of it because it was (to my seven or eight year old and very innocent mind) actually quite scary. At that time in my life, I used to sleep on my side with my head on my pillow (of course) and my arm under my pillow with my hand sticking out towards the head of my bed. And after I saw the movie (up to the point where I had to leave the room because it was so scary to me), I couldn't sleep with my arm under my pillow with my hand sticking out any more because I thought that the blob might be under my bed and that it might come out and eat my hand! Not eat me...just my hand. Even back then, I knew that it couldn't be there, but I was just afraid that it might be there. Weird, huh?
;)
Anyway, that's the only time that I can remember a movie actually scaring me enough that I changed something in my life.

Levant was a vampire right?

A tale perfect for the day.... it is based on the old Jack tales from the British Islands.
The Jack O Lantern....
This tale happens on a long dark night. Jack was a jolly lad who was a bit of a hellraiser. He drank heartily and liked to live it up. One dark night he was stumbling home down a long narrow lane from a heavy night at the pub. From a distance he could see an apple tree and a man with a long coat and floppy hat standing under it. The leaves and most of the fruit on the tree had fallen off except for one lone apple.
Despite his stupor he realised that something was up and it was the prince of darkness. The devil had an appreciation for Jack for his zest for life and he wanted to take him to hell. Jack watned to strike up a deal with to climb up and get the apple. The Prince of darkness hesitated at Jack's request. He then stated "I will climb up and get the apple." he stated. He did just that. He scampered up and got the apple and then started to climb down. Jack knowing something was up carved a cross in the tree and the devil became stuck in the tree
"What did you do that for?" asked the Devil. But not watning to let Jack go, he wanted to strike a deal. Jack listened to the devil and he stated he had one request and that was to be allowed to live a long life if he let him down and that when he died he would not go to hell. The devil agreed. Jack defaced the cross and the devil scampered down the tree. He handed Jack the apple and it was soon rotten and he threw it away.
Jack lived a long life and when he died he appeared in hell and the devil told him to go away for he honored his promise to Jack. He went to the gates of heaven and St. Peter turned him away. He was a restless soul stuck in between heaven and hell. Jack goes back to hell and pleads with the devil to let him and he feels sorry for him for he cannot take him. He throws Jack and apple and states to Jack he will have to wander the earth. However before he leaves, the devil throws him an ember and it burrows a hole into the apple to light his way. That is why when you see a light in the dark, It is Jack's restless spirit wandering the earth.
Hence forth the story of the Jack O'Lantern

Good morning, all! I woke at 5:11 AM with a charley horse in my left leg. I hope this is not a bad omen for traveling. I am packed and ready to depart, so keep those travel vibes coming!
Last night I watched my new Region 2 DVD of THE CAT AND THE CANARY, with Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard, Douglass Montgomery, George Zucco. Gale Sondergaard, and other good character actors, The picture is poorly framed and this wonderful film needs a better DVD release. Since the film's never been available for sale in this country, I have no idea what the copyright issues may be.
DR FJL, what did you do about the Met?
TOD: The last time I mentioned THE BLAIR WITCH, there were a lot of didn't-scare-me responses. I saw it on opening day with two friends from Barnes and Noble and only knew that it had terrified the audience at Sundance. After the film, the three of went to dinner, had several beers, and parted ways. When I went to bed, frightening images from the film - the handprints all over the walls, the actor standing in the corner of the basement - kept creeping into my mind and playing evil games. I don't know exactly what tapped into my subconscious - Hansel and Gretel, child abuse, fear of the outdoors - but for weeks after the movie I slept with the lights on.
-
Good Morning, Larry.
Good Travel Vibes!!!
I'm not a fan of scary movies, never was, so I don't have a memory of being scared. Oh, wait. I just remembered seeing a scary movie. What was it called? Oh, yeah, A Chorus Line ;)
-
I'm going to call for a car to LaGrdia. I'll be seeing you later from Ohio. Keep those vibes coming!

And the word of the day is: LEVANT!
Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde
While the bandleader went LEVANT with the band's pay.
-
I love Oscar Levant! He's always my favorite character in the movies in which he appears. And he's not too shabby on the ivories, either!
His biography is fascinating---he was a very complex, obsessive character!
-
Great blocking news, MR BK. Congrats.
Today I am working ALL DAY and then attending a seance tonight at The World of Wisdom. Who knows WHAT will happen. Of course, you know that tonight the veil between the physical and spirit world is at its thinnest, so don't be surprised at anything that happens.
Perhaps I can post a photo of my costume tomorrow.
DR CILLA LIZ.....my favorite costume EVER was a photo you posted last year....if you still have it....I will just say APPLE and UMBRELLA to remind you.

Scariest movie:
JAWS and ROSEMARY'S BABY
THE TINGLER and HOMICIDAL!
-
Happy Halloween!! ;D
-
Rainy here today after a day of sunshine and 70 degrees on Monday!
-
Off to work.
Pray for Rosemary's Baby.
-
It would have to be three films.
1) The Exorcist. I saw it went I was 14 years olds when it first came out by myself. It was rated 18 years and older in Montreal and I got in it. What a film that was on the big screen!
2) The Haunting (Robert Wise version) and The Legend of Hell House. Both films took place in big mansions and there were no demons jumping out at you. Just good old fashion camera work, sound and editing to give you the creeps. The adage less is more is really true here.
3) Halloween. The first and the best. The killings were not all that gorey and it gave you real scares.
I have never seen any of the Friday the 13th films. Only one of the Freddy films and none of the other modern day slash and kill the teenager movies. They seem to always try to up the ante in new ways to kill people.

Off I must go to work.
At least I'll be getting off from work while it's still daylight, and won't have to wait for der Brucer to pick me up. (He's always late... by at least thirty minutes. :P :-\)

TOD:
Bill O'Reilly.
::)
-
It's supposed to be 70 degrees here also. Though I don't know what the evening will bring. It will be quite nice for those walking in the Halloween Parade. No winter coats for them!
-
HOMICIDIAL was the movie that made my skin crawl when I first saw it at twelve. It gave me nightmares. I caught it once a few years back. It doesn't have quite the same impact that it did in those formative years.
-
DR Sandra's school costume. Tonight's will be different.
-
Good morning!
It's cloudier here today than the last couple of days, but the temps are again going to be in the low 70s so it should be a pretty day. No rain scheduled until Thursday.
-
I shuddered through NIGHT OF THE DEMON and THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (Hammer version in garish color) and could not sleep for nights after I saw them as a little boy.
As a teenager, I well remember seeing a rerelease of PSYCHO (I didn't see it on initial release), and I shot straight up out of my chair when the second murder happened. I was so shocked and scared I wasn't even aware I had left my seat until many seconds later.
THE EXORCIST sickened me more than it scared me (it was such an ugly picture both in language and in graphics), and frankly, when the bed was flopping around with Linda Blair on it early on, I was laughing rather than feeling scared.
-
Page Two MONSTERS, INC. Dance!!!

Much as I adore Audrey Hepburn, I could never sit through THEY ALL LAUGHED again. It was deadly dull (a Henry Higgins reference) the first time through, and that's that. I wouldn't mind seeing BLOODLINE again with dear Audrey's life in peril, but I passed on THEY ALL LAUGHED when I saw it come up for sale.
-
I have nothing left over from last night's prime time line-up to watch. I still have KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE on the DVR which I suppose I'll get to this afternoon, and I'll continue with another CSI: NY from the boxed set today, too. That should fill out my afternoon.
-
Tonight, we welcome back the superb HOUSE to prime-time.
Liza Minnelli is guest starring on LAW & ORDER: CI tonight.
-
And, surprise-surprise, I cleaned the living room this morning in anticipation of trick-or-treaters tonight. I was afraid I wouldn't hear the doorbell with the vacuum cleaner roaring.
-
Thanks for the NYC pics, DR Tom. Great, as usual.
-
As an adult, the movie that scared the most was probably ALIEN. But I really don't enjoy most scary movies made today. The older ones still have the power to grip me and not let go.

Michael S & JRand-cool Halloween posts. :)

But the movie that scared the living daylights out of me and my buddies when we got together at my house to watch it back in 1977 was the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD!

For 20 years after that movie would give me nightmares! And I still love it!

TOTD: this was on tv when I was a kid (maybe 5 or so), not in a theater, but I remember being at our neighbor's house one Saturday afternoon when I Was a Teenage Frankenstein came on and that scene of his hideous face terrified me--I still remember burying my face in the couch and screaming while the neighbor kid (about 16) laughed and kept saying, "It's only a movie."
TomovOz: sorry I have been so lax--got your message and it was a pleasure having you here (Colin, not so much--JOKE, it's a joke, people). Can't wait to have an excuse for a region-free DVD player. ;D

I don't watch THE UNIT, but I have VERONICA MARS on at the same time. Three shows in one time period makes for some fancy DVR juggling. Thankfully, I have a set-up that allows me not to miss anything if there are three shows in competition for the same timeslot. I can even do four if I have to. Thankfully, though, that hasn't happened yet.

Gosh is it Halloween already! It would be fun to go into town to see the children in their costumes, instead I’ll be home playing with Sherlock. I’ll wait until he is bigger to take him into large crowds. It has been years since we have seen trick-or-treaters.

I have been reading the same book for 8 weeks now. :o No wonder I’m amazed it is already the end of October. Puppies and company are very demanding. I miss walking, hiking, exercising & reading fpr pleasure ;D

On a completely unrelated subject (well--if you go back a few days, it's semi-related), I am enjoying the OCR of Grey Gardens more than any other show I've listened to in a long, long time. A lot of it is cut from the same tonal cloth as Follies (IMHO, anyhoo), but it's brilliantly written, sung and recorded.

Halloween greetings! It was oddly warm outside when I went out for the newspapers early this morning. Trick or treat in our community will just be winding down when I arrive home from work. DH Richard has a nice basket of treats to hand out to the brave kids who decide it's worth it to climb our steep driveway.
TOD - Yesterday was a time I thought I was going to have to leave the theatre. The battle scenes in Flags of Our Fathers are pretty graphic and I looked away a lot.

I'm up, I'm up - I've BEEN up since eight, but had to answer lots of e-mails. It looks nippy out again, but I cannot let that deter me from jogging.
In the meantime, here are some photographs from The Brain photo shoot. First up, Cason Murphy and Alet Taylor as the aliens.

Kevin and Lauren as our happy little marrieds.

TWILIGHT ZONE movie spoiler ahead:
The wrap-around stuff with Albert Brooks and Dan Ackroyd from the TWILIGHT ZONE movie really had me jumping out of my seat. ("You wanna see something really scary?")
-
I don't like scary movies. I have to leave the room when my son watches one of his movies. He doesn't like monster movies; he likes mob movies with killings and tortures.

I posted my scary movies a few weeks ago and don't want to be redundant. So here are the Cliff Notes:
Movies that scared me as a child:
Homicidal
Two on a Guillotine
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Midnight Lace
Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte/Baby Jane
Them!
Movies that scared me when I was older:
See No Evil
Don't Look Now
The Tenant
Movies That Scare Me Now:
An Inconvenient Truth
Who Killed the Electric Car
Bush's Brain

WOMAN OF THE DAY AWARD

Proud Witch (http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_a/salem-woman-says-witches-have-rights/20061030150209990001?cid=2194)
At 73, Laurie Cabot is a proud witch and she's fighting for her civil rights. She's shown here in an undated photo.
Reuters
Laurie Cabot is a proud witch , and she's fighting for her civil rights.
At age 73, the official witch of Salem says her craft is stronger than ever, as she sits in an overstuffed chair behind a pink table where she does psychic readings -- and where, she says, spirits of the dead often "pop through."
…
In between psychic readings and running a shop that sells everything a witch needs to get started, Cabot is mailing letters to civic leaders across Massachusetts warning them of the legal perils of portraying witches as grisly old hags.
Posters hung on government property of witches as haggard women on broomsticks or as green-faced outcasts with an evil glint in their eye could lead to defamation lawsuits by witches protesting what they see as violations of their civil rights.
"If they don't protect us and take care of us like everyone else, then they could be sued," said Cabot, who in 1986 founded the Witches League for Self-Awareness after the filming of "The Witches of Eastwick," a movie witches said made them look "stupid."

I have landed. A nice surprise at the Dayton airport was finding my dad and his girlfriend Lucille waiting for me. He looks good, too thin, but his energy is up and he seems to be doing fine. I am now at my brother's, visiting with my brother Randy, sister-in-law Jo, and my niece Allison who drove up from Tennessee with her adorable baby Chase to see me.
BK, break a leg with rehearsals. I love the photos!

TOPIC OF THE DAY: Not my "cup of tea" really.
I do, however, remember covering my eyes at Dressed to Kill and The Eyes of Laura Mars. Yow!
-
Was it too early to start eating some of the Halloween candy at 10am? :)
I know i have enough and i cannot resist the chocolate! My favorites that i have are: reese's peanut butter cups, crunchie, and wunderbar.
-
Tonight i have on tv: Dancing With The stars, veronica mars and boston legal. I think Gilmore Girls is a repeat.
-
My little niece is a bit sick. But my sister decided that she would bring her over for Halloween (since they do not get that many kids at their house).
I don't think she will go out (she is only 13 months old). But we do have 2 costumes here (little red riding hood and a unicorn snuggly costume i got last year).
I don't think it will be that cold here (maybe 50F tonight). But it will rain. It's weird but some years it is really cold. And then some years it's been really warm!

Welcome to my home state, DR Elmoooooore!

A Ganch:
-
DON'T LOOK NOW is a good choice. That movie has such a creepy vibe.
MichaelS mentioned LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE. I can remember watching that as a kid, my older siblings were babysitting me, and they let me watch it. It got to my bedtime and I refused to go to bed, so the compromise was they would let me stay in the TV room, but they held a blanket in front of my face so I couldn't actually watch the last half hour. When the ending revelation happened, I still remember their frightened reactions and that scared me more than if I had actually seen the movie!
-
DR Laura- TPunk too is Li'l Red Riding Hood today.
-
DR Sandra reports that there was an underpants issue at preschool today.
-
Apparently, Superman doesn't have bowels of steel.

Ganch=Skunk
Hmmm, even with child mispronunciation I wouldn't have guessed that one.
-
I had absinthe once at someone's holiday party. You have to burn a sugar cube over it to carmelize it or something. It was vicious going down the ol' gullet, but I had no wild hallucinations or bouts with madness. At least other than ones I've always had.
-
Ben, your Playbills are in ze mail.
-
I think John Carpenter's THE THING is a pretty solid scary film.
-
DR DERBRUCER,
Been over to my neighborhood, have you?
Personally, I think dogs are entitled to some self-respect!
-
I have yet to see the Exorcist...I just don't think I would enjoy it!
I do recall TV ads for some horror films that used to scare the bejesus out of me...
The Ad for "It's Alive" ...I would have to leave the room or change the channel when it would come on..."There's only ONE thing wrong with the Davis baby... It's Alive." ....and then it would show that baby crib with the gruesome monster hand.
-
And the TV commercial for BEYOND THE DOOR really creeped me out too....I was shocked when I learned that Juliet Mills, who at that time in my childhood was on reruns of NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR was the star!
-
And...my brother Allen and one of his girlfriends took me and my little brother to the theater to see FEAR IS THE KEY back around 1972...the poster scared me to begin with, but when the movie started and that guy set those people on fire...well, I don't remember any more then that so either we left the film or I closed my eyes for the remainder...or maybe the rest of the film just didin't impact me the way the opening scene did.
It wasn't a horror film, just some action thriller...but that skull on the poster made it look so scary to a 7 year old.

Thanks, Rod! My nephew will be very excited.
And now, a question, even though it's not Wednesday.
I haven't seen the new production and it's been a LONG time since I saw Chorus Line. Where does "And" fall in the song sequence? I think it goes after I Can Do That and before At the Ballet. Am I correct?

Yes, John Carpenter's THE THING had me squirming in my seat for most of the movie. It runs third to ALIEN and ALIENS in the creep-out derby for me.
-
I watched three things on TV this afternoon.
I began with another CSI: NY episode from the first season boxed set. This second episode involved a death by lye in Grand Central Station. This was also the episode where series regular Vanessa Ferlito left the show.

Next came KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE. Sumptuous sets and costumes, but a very banal telling of the King Arthur story. And Robert Taylor was all wrong as Lancelot. He might have made a better Arthur than Mel Ferrer, but I'm sure he would never have attepted a British accent. But then, Ava Gardner as Gueneviere didn't try one either.
-
Staying in a Robert Taylor mood, I next began watching UNDERCURRENT with Taylor as a psychotic married to Katharine Hepburn. Only watched about 30 minutes of it (I've seen it before but not in quite awhile), but will probably not finish it until tomorrow.
-
I'm assuming the Astaire-Rogers box will come tomorrow since it didn't arrive today. Bah!
-
WE are all waiting for Amazon orders, aren't we...I am hoping my box set of 1960s German westerns will arrive soon!
-
Boo!

I shall now be on my way to LACC and rehearsal, after which I shall be on my way to see Sister Act.

I can't wait to hear what you think about it...unless you don't like it. :-\ I have always loved Alan Menken's music. :)

I must say that the staff at the land of Kritzer are far more efficient than Amazon!
-
I don't know about that -- Amazon ships one day, and I usually get it the next!
I have no problems with Kritzerland shipments, though...just that they're not 2nd-day service, which I get from Amazon all year long (special fee that pays for itself within a month!!!)
-
THat skunk costume is adoreable Laura....
-
Maybe it will still be running when you go West to get your Oscar for S&V :)
der Brucer
Nahhhh....I think I was as close as I'll ever get when our last film made it to the Oscar short list. If only it hadn't been for that damned IMAX dolphin film, narrated by Sting, which wasn't even a *real* documentary because every shot was staged...I could have been there when Randy Newman won his Oscar.
I'm going to go eat a non-dolphin-safe tuna sandwich RIGHT NOW!
With S&V...we didn't even have the funds to jump through the necessary hoops so it could qualify. :'(
-
I also do not like mobster movies...
I dont mind mysteries and stuff if they are well written and hold your attention. I hate movies that use murder as a plot gimmick and that is how I feel about a lot of the gangster movies and many of the horror films
-
I wish I could get NBC in well enought to see this Heroes program that everyone is chatting about.
-
A Ganch:
I was thinking maybe he was going for a guanche, as mentioned in song by Randy Newman. Guanches were the indigenous population of the Canary Islands, until they were slaughtered by the "Great Nations of Europe".
-
I wish I could get NBC in well enought to see this Heroes program that everyone is chatting about.
And up against some feeble competition last night (reruns on CBS and THE BACHELOR on ABC and JUSTICE on Fox), HEROES gained audience making it now the biggest new show of the season in terms of audience. (UGLY BETTY is now second).
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS did well enough in the time slot - 8.3 million, about two million more than have been watching it on Tuesday nights at 8, but not doing any better than STUDIO 60 was doing in the slot.
-
Off to get ready for trick-or-treaters and then to settle in for prime time TV at 9.
WBBL.

And how do you feel now that you are 8?
-
hi everybody. Just wanted to say Happy Halloween. Can't say I have anything exciting planned. Spent the morning in bed watching this movie I never heard of called "Hard Candy" I really liked it, but I can't really think of anyone I'd recommend it to. Anyway, hope everyone is having a good day and a fun night!
-
I just carved a pumpkin. It is a pumpkin we had leftover from last Halloween. I didn't think it would make it another year.
-
Great blocking news, MR BK.
Yes, I have it. It's either in my other computer or on the disk I made before reformating this one. I'll see if I can find it. It was a wonderful costume. He won the contest
-
On a completely unrelated subject (well--if you go back a few days, it's semi-related), I am enjoying the OCR of Grey Gardens more than any other show I've listened to in a long, long time. A lot of it is cut from the same tonal cloth as Follies (IMHO, anyhoo), but it's brilliantly written, sung and recorded.
Isn't it amazing how they tie so much of the documentary into the music? I think I appreciated the music a lot more having seen the documentary, especially Jerry Likes My Corn.
-
Jeeze, my friend just sent me a pic on the phone of her halloween costume, sylvia plath....she is dressed up with her head in an oven. I wish I could put it up here, she did a good job. I guess she's already pissed off a few people with it. Mabye I'll have to go to this halloween costume party after all.

I'm ordering juvenile books right now and I just put in the CD. I really enjoy it, also. I have the DVD for the documentary from the library, but I haven't watched it, yet...maybe tonight. The only thing that I want to watch is "Boston Legal." It'll depend on when I get home and what else I have to watch on tape. :)
-
Hey Jon! Good to see you.
-
Trick or treaters start in one minute. I'm not expecting much this year. In my old neighborhood we had TONS! I think I had 80 last year or something like that. There aren't as many kids in this neighborhood, but you never know. I have whoppers, snickers, dots, and m&ms. Lots of goodies for me if the kids don't show.
-
My Roomba arrived at work from eBay today, but I had to go directly to my car from the courthouse, so I didn't bring it home yet. This weekend I shall have a robot to clean my floors
-
My neighbor girls just came to the door. A witch and a princess. It is very cold here, low tonight is going to be 14 degrees, it's only 30 right now. Their mom told me not to count on very many kids here. Gotta check the cats. They are doing major fighting tonight. Probably because Boo was at the vet. She's been puking a lot so I took her in. Don't think it's anything serious, but she got a shot and dewormed and she can't eat for 8-12 hours. So she's wound up about that. I have a feeling I will be filling cat dishes at midnight - when she can eat again
-
DR DERBRUCER,
Been over to my neighborhood, have you?
Personally, I think dogs are entitled to some self-respect!
They lick themselves. And each other.
Of course, maybe they use a different definition for "self-respect."
:o
-
In today's UPS delivery:
The new Tarzan set with the 6 RKO "Tarzan" movies.
The new Criterion DVD of "Le Samourai" with Alain Delon as a hit man.
The new SNL "The Best of Saturday TV Funhouse"...featuring a lot of the cartoons they produced and aired on the show.
-
They lick themselves. And each other.
Of course, maybe they use a different definition for "self-respect."

Cats do this, too.
And they're a VERY sociable lot.

A cat guardian's work is NEVER done.
-
A woman came up to my cash register today, buying several packages of rice crackers.
I asked her, "You're giving out those for Halloween? You do like living dangerously, don't you!"
Much laughter.
-
I can't believe it was 73 degrees on Sunday and now it's going to be 14 degrees tonight....that's scary
-
I found a cat toy under a cabinet last night.
Sigh.
I spent a few moments "missing" my Vickie.
-
Cats do this, too.
And they're a VERY sociable lot.
But I've never seen a dog lick a cat, or vice versa.
Not that it couldn't happen.
-
Well, all the kids I'm expecting have been here. I wasn't sure my interpreter would bring her kids, we haven't really been getting along, but she lives a block away and I told her I'd have candy tonight, so they came. I'm glad, actually. Guess I'll start my diet after I eat the whoppers, dots, m&ms and snickers
-
But I've never seen a dog lick a cat, or vice versa.
Not that it couldn't happen.
I've seen dogs and cats lick each other on the head or back of the neck, but not anywhere unmentionable on a family site
-
Oh the last one's were the little mermaid, a pirate and pooh bear was in the stroller
-
DELETE THE CHEERLEADER.... DELETE THE WORLD!!!
Hey, I think those glasses make Jack Coleman woofy!
-
TOD - my parents never paid any attention to what I watched. When I was little, The Birds really scared me, In Cold Blood kept me up for lots of nights because our house was at the end of a long driveway and I kept thinking people were going to come and kill us. Actually what scared me as much as anything were the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz, I used to cover my eyes until that part was over.
-
I'm trying to think if I've seen scary movie lately....hmmm don't remember.
Blair Witch may have been scary to me if I hadn't heard all the hype before I saw it
-
But I've never seen a dog lick a cat, or vice versa.
Not that it couldn't happen.
My sister had a dog (Murphy) and a cat (Casper) and they were "brothers" for 11 years before Murphy had to be put to sleep earlier this year...kidney disease. :( They did lick each other every once in a while, but they only sniffed each other's "unmentionables," though.
-
By the time I arrived home from work, the appointed hours for trick or treating were over and DH Richard said we'd had all of 2, count 'em 2, visitors. That means we have a lot of mini Twix, Three Musketeers, Milky Way, and Milky Way Midnights left over. Well, not so many Milky Way Midnights, because I took out about a dozen of those to take to work today :-X
We're looking forward to watching the Halloween episode of NCIS in a few minutes.
-
I bought three bags of KitKat Bars for der Brucer to share with any youthfuls that show up tonight. So far, no takers. He'll just have to struggle through them all by himself.
;D
-
But I've never seen a dog lick a cat, or vice versa.
Not that it couldn't happen.
Actually, I have....I saw it on one of the America's Funniest Videos segments about dogs and cats. Some socialize and groom...although I'm sure the cats are the ones who do all/most of the grooming.

DELETE THE CHEERLEADER.... DELETE THE WORLD!!!
Hey, I think those glasses make Jack Coleman woofy!
Sorry if that catchphrase irritates you, S. Woody.
Perhaps if it was Casey waltzing with the cheerleader, saving the world, you'd be a bit less upset by it....
Nevertheless, I shall continue posting it. It's my "And one for Mahler"....
-
In the ten years I lived here the doorbell has never rung once at Halloween. But the postman has rung twice.
-
"Casey" incorporates our esteemed BK's word for the day. It's not just a repetition of a phrase.
Come to think of it, though, it's a little sad that I'm generally the only one who seems to care about the word for the day.
Although I find it's a great way to kick-start my brain every morning.
-
...But the postman has rung twice.
Special delivery??? :D :D :D

My two little Viet Namese-Jewish Princesses from next door:

"Casey" incorporates our esteemed BK's word for the day. It's not just a repetition of a phrase.
But why criticize what I post? What I don't understand is why you feel compelled to be ugly about it.
-
it's a great way to kick-start my brain every morning.
Which in turn kick-starts *my* brain!
-
All of our trick-or-treaters so far have been Mexican. I guess the Mayor hasn't completly succeeded in his campaign of ethnic cleansing. Good.
-
But why criticize what I post? That's what I don't understand...why you feel compelled to be ugly about it.
At least you didn't use poor grammar!
-
At least you didn't use poor grammar!
There's a mercy. Imagine the overblown pedantic hysteria that might have ensued over some little nothing or other.
-
Well, I had TONS of trick or treaters last year...of course that was in my old neighborhood...here...4 plus one in a stroller who didn't take any candy. I have SO much candy to eat
-
Go Emmit go.....I could use that cheerleader to cheer on Emmit in Dancing With the Stars.....
-
Skip has baked chocolate chip cookies. Not that we intended to give them to trick or treaters, though.
-
My Roomba arrived at work from eBay today, but I had to go directly to my car from the courthouse, so I didn't bring it home yet. This weekend I shall have a robot to clean my floors
A Roomba figured into the plot of tonight's NCIS and I wouldn't have gotten the reference if I hadn't just read your post!
-
Skip and I are now officially booked for our L.A. visit to see BRAIN FROM PLANET X. At least we paid for both our plane tickets, and that's as official as you can get, assuming nothing goes wrong.
-
I had a bit of a laugh on my dinner break. Every year people drive in from other neighborhoods around 7:30 and hit our neighborhood. My dad finds this kind of offensive so he starts slipping the kids packets of ketchup and tarter sauce. Then we left the front door manning to my little brother and set off fireworks.
-
I found a cat toy under a cabinet last night.
Sigh.
I spent a few moments "missing" my Vickie.
Bogie loved munching on plastic bags & I have a long bag from the cleaners hanging in the closet filled with teeth marks…..sigh.
Keep posting the cheerleader quote, it makes me smile.
-

Always glad to be helpful. I was going to run to the office after Dancing with the Stars to get it, but baby it's cold outside.....

Thank you, Jane, for the memory association (sigh) and the encouragement.

LOL! That is too funny..I can see him doing that while smiling and making it seem as if ketchup and tarter sauce were the best candy around

My trip's just going to be a quick one back and forth to and from L.A., just two days in L.A. - but Skip's going to join some business friends in San Francisco for a few days after L.A. and then fly back from San Francisco.
-
Nilla was in love with a shoe string. He used to walk around the house dragging the silly thing. I found it the other day. Callie was dragging it for awhile. Nilla also used to find my socks and decorate the house with them. Whenever I see a sock in the middle of the floor I think of him
-
Jhvw- It’s nice to see you again now you have moved. Have fun at the party tonight.
DRLaura-Your little princesses are too cute!
-
DR RonP, re: halloween weather. Warm is just right!
Actually it wasn't terrible tonight. Although it was colder than expected with a bit of rain. I think it was about 40F.
-
DR Jane, little megan was under the weather and did not dress up. She is too little to eat candy, so no point in going trick or treating anyhow. Next year she will be 2 and my sister told her tonight, "next year we will go trick or treating so you can get some candy for me and daddy" :)
(not that my niece understood what she meant anyhow, but still :) )

Does anybody else get annoyed by the previews ABC is showing for sweeps. I am annoyed.
I watch LOST and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES on CTV (canadian station) and the previews they show are very reasonable. BUt i happen to see commercials for both these shows today. And there were ridiculously huge spoilers in them.
Now i know this is sweeps. And i know that they want to get people to watch. But i really did not want to know either of these huge developments that were revealed to me.
MAJOR LOST and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES SPOILERS.
*
*
*
*
Re: LOST the promo i saw on CTV said that something huge was going to happen. On ABC they announce, "one of these castaways is going to die".
Re: DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, they show the woman who will be taking the hostages in the upcoming show. They talk about the hostage situation, and they say someone will get shot (and then show a teaser).
Personally i would rather have been surprised about both of these things. Is there no way to give mild spoilers without ruining it for people who would rather not know.
I was quite happy re: LOST just knowing that something major was going to happen. And re: DH i was happy not knowing anything about the hostage thing.
Maybe most people like to know these things. But to me they gave way too much away.
-
Trick or treating was good. But when it is cool the kids have to wear jackets under their costumes. :(
The last group of kids got a nice treat. I had a lot of candy left (and don't want to eat any after tomorrow). So i gave them handfuls and they were very happy.
At one point i wrapped little megan in a blanket and brought her to the door with me. She was sort of stunned and not sure what to make of things. I"m not sure how much she understand period. But halloween i'm sure was very confusing. All these kids showing up looking scary and getting candy.
-
I"m not sure who to vote for for DANCING WITH THE STARS. Mario is my favorite, so i used all my phone votes on him. But i suspect he and emmitt are safe.
I really don't want joey to go home and he could be in trouble. So i will probably use my internet votes for him. Although i really don't want monique to go home either. :(
I also like the cheerleader posts. I think it depends if you like the show or not (i like it).
The funny thing is that since HEROES is on Global here we don't get the same previews. In fact i don't think we get any previews after the show is over. So DR RonP, the first few times you posted the cheerleader quote i had no idea what you were talking about.
But then when i would tape STUDIO 60 (that comes on after it), it is on NBC, so i would get the previews from NBC and they would always have the cheerleader quote. I almost wonder if people watching the show on GLOBAL here are missing out on a lot!
-
My Roomba arrived at work from eBay today, but I had to go directly to my car from the courthouse, so I didn't bring it home yet. This weekend I shall have a robot to clean my floors
It will be interesting to see how the cats react to the Roomba
-
Laura, your princess visitors are adoreably precious!
-
Thank you, Jane, for the memory association (sigh) and the encouragement.
Ron I also agree with Jane, I have a halter from a horse I used to ride and sadly has passed on.
I also agree with Jane keep on posting the Cheerleader words...
WE need good words of encouragement in this deranged world of ours!
-
It will be interesting to see how the cats react to the Roomba
That's an understatement
-
JRand, found the photo you were talking about
-
Well it's only 17 degrees. Time to cuddle up under the covers with a cat or two. Ok, even if it's a two cat night, Callie won't sleep on the bed. It's just her thing.
They have been pretty good tonight considering I had to put up all their food for the evening. I've snuck a little to Callie a couple times and even offered some to Boo, but she wasn't interested.
-
I only had four rings of the doorbell - about 9 kids total.
-
Love the Magritte halloween costume!
-
While waiting for folks to come get their candy, I watched MON ONCLE.
I've had it for several months (it was the Criterion remaster which looked mostly smashing), but I was just never in the mood to watch it. I saw it years ago in a film appreciation class and not since then.
Terry Jones says in his introduction that he was disappointed when he first saw it but the film is now his favorite Tati. I have suffered a similar change of heart. I don't think it's the equal of M. HULOT'S HOLIDAY though there certainly are some hilarious sey pieces in it. But a lot of it just doesn't register or prolongs a joke past the breaking point.
-
HOUSE had another gripping drama plus the introduction of the fantastic David Morse as House's nemesis. I'm going to look forward to this battle between the two of them very much over the next episodes.
-
nip/tuck
had me squirming with two VERY close calls on Dr. Troy. And surprising developments with Peter DInklege's character and Joley RIchardson's wife. Wow!
-
I'll have four hours of shows from tonight to try to fit in tomorrow. Busy day especially if the Astaire-Rogers box comes tomorrow as I expect.
-
And now, I'm on my way to bed.
Good night!
-
DR CILLALIZ,
Do let us know how you like your Roomba. Such a wonderful concept, but the reviews on Amazon were mixed. I do know it's not useful on stairs--it needs a flat surface.
-
Halloween on my street was really wild this year. It was a warm day and a really pleasant evening, so we had more trick-or-treaters than usual. We do an informal count of attendance by how much candy we give out. A neighbor who made two additional trips to the store told me she guesses we had 1200-1400 people. It's basically a four-block-long block party.
Our local fire department took part by driving a fire truck down the street with the firefighters in costume.
Former Virginia governor and until-recently-presidential-hopeful Mark Warner decorated his patio with low-flying cobwebs (you couldn't help but get caught in them), then he was dressed all in black, plus a mask ("I don't really know who I am," he told me, but he looked scary). The older kids "if you're really brave" (plus me) were invited to reach down into a cooler, past some really SLIMY stuff (pasta?) and pull out an "eyeball" (grape). He also had a monster with HUGE hands in attendance. It was quite fun. I had no idea he was going to do this.
Our canine costumes were a bit difficult to decipher this year. I saw two dogs as hula dancers and one as a convict (he got 2-5 years for jumping up on the table and eating the humans' dinner, I was told). Some of the others were anybody's guess.
One adult, who must be new to us, said, "It's like Bourbon Street--for kids." Lots and lots of smiles and everyone very gracious--not the usual state of affairs here in Washington.
I attended two parties on my block, but believe there were some others as well. Great fun!
-
The evening attire:
-
My princess neighbors came back a second time. I gave them each a lollipop, and then we looked for caterpillars on the vines.
-
They were the only children I recognized. Not many kids on our street. Many of the Trick-or-Treaters I'm sure don't even live in our neighborhood.
-
BK must be at intermission of SISTER ACT just about now. Hope the show is looking really good, though I know BK will tell it like he sees it, either way.
-
That's an understatement
Some years ago, my mom gave me one of those little dog robots that Radio Shack sold. It was cute, did little tricks and yipped.
I brought it back to Oakland and put it on the floor. Vickie was immediately on her guard over this critter that was smaller than she.
When I started it up, she was one unhappy cat. When it began moving she ran and hid. I put the dog away and went to retrieve her from my bedroom.
She hissed at me. Later, she cautiously entered the living room. She sniffed everything she could and caught no scent of another animal. I think she forgave me. She immediately came up to me and jumped in my lap. She looked around a bit longer and then settled into a contented snuggle.
-
Sandra has a lovely costume Laura, did she make it?
-
I see we have jumped right over to page 8!!
-
Sandra has a lovely costume Laura, did she make it?
Umm. Sure. We'll go with that. She made it. Yeah. She made it.
-
(I bought it at WalMart.)
-
I'm finally back after show and dinner and some rather unbelievable traffic. Shall now write Ye Olde Notes.
