I once read, primarily focusing on Feydeau's 3-act farces - as I recall - that the three act structure is basically this:
Act One - get your leading actor up a tree Act Two - throw rocks at him Act Three - get him down |

BK, I agree completely with you about 3-act plays being repositioned to 2-acts and a similar attitude about plays - mostly musicals, it seems - that played originally without intermission getting sliced into two sections.
