Someone on youtube made one of those really nice fan videos to "Hollywood Town," an old favorite song from the late 1970's.  I remember "Hollywood Town" with great affection in a different version (the version that's best known was sung by Manfred Mann, this version is sung by its wonderful songwriter Harriet Schock, whom i've met cyber-ly and telephonically as a result of my doing a youtube parody of what i guess is her biggest hit, the Helen reddy hit "Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady")

Here is Harriet doing "Hollywood Town," with a video assembled by one of her dear fans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT51L-R71Wk

The youtube user who made the video seems to have a fascination with David Boreanaz; i don't think Mr. Boreanaz had anything to do with the song, as far as I know, but it is a lovely video tribute to a catchy-as-hell song.

In my parody lyric of "Ain't No Way to treat a Lady," entitled "Ain't No Way to Treat Ed Liddy" - a/ka/a The AIG CEO Song, I oh-so-subtly :) paid tribute to Ms. Schock by starting with "I guess that I'm in shock about Ed Liddy."  (She did say she enjoyed the parody, thought it was very funny and well-done, praised Skip's work on the way the music sounded, but didn't mention the use of the word "shock" in the first line as a tribute to her - perhaps it was too subtle! )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Csk7kBuBbsA

One of the main joys of doing the Helen-Reddy-oeuvre parodies on youtube has been being in touch with a few of the original songwriters, which started as a matter of being appropriate, just letting the writers know -sometimes through their representatives or publishers - that their work was being parodied.  In addition to Harriet Schock, I've heard back from Paul Williams about the parody of "You And Me Against the World" and from Ray Burton, who wrote the music for "I Am Woman" - Ray Burton even shared with me a very funny parody he wrote.

What would I like to have done (professionally) that I haven't done?

Since the operative phrase here is "have done," my answer would have to be: nothing.

I've written and directed for both stage and film, which is all I ever wanted to do.  I've also done some teaching, which I enjoy.

On the other hand, it would be nice to be involved in some projects where I had more control (e.g. better budgets, final cut).

There are also certain scripts that I've written that I would like to see in production, and it would be nice to see a full staging of my musical.  There are also some books that I want to start and/or finish.

But, as far as "doing the professional jobs I've always wanted to do," I've been very lucky.

Good morning, all! After I got in last night, I took care of a few emails and watched Anderson Cooper. I am allcaught up on the Obamas' European jaunt. I dragged out my score for THE BEGGAR'S OPERA and looked through it for a bit before turning out the lights.

This morning I have a jaunt to Toyland to pick up two books on the Iroquois Theatre Fire and to use the office piano. At 11, I'm meeting a John Vogel who is now the executor for Mr John McGlinn. Mr Vogel initially, before McGlinn's death, contacted me about working for his foundation in musical theatre restoration, and I was reticent for two reasons: I'm was way too busy with BABES IN TOYLAND and I get a lot of peculiar letters about my work, and this man was writing me about working with or contacting two living men I wasn't fond of: the late McGlinn and a slimeball conductor who's a rather evil, amoral bisexual pig. So, suddenly, McGlinn's relatives contacted me because Mr Vogel had approached them about being John's executor and he claimed to know me. I gave them my thoughts on his communications with me and advised them that, since Paige O'Hara wanted to sign off as executor and I'd turned down the executor offer twice, I would be happy to work closely with Mr Vogel to protect the family's and John's wishes. So, today I meet Mr Vogel, and I look forward to discovering what makes this man tick.

I'm listening to Sigmubd Romberg's THE GIRL IN PINK TIGHTS. Oy!

Last night I was telling my niece about Passover coming up. And I was telling her about the sedar and asking her if she'd like to hide some matzah. I told her the kids hide it and then the bubbie and the zaida give you money (or a treat).

I believe I'm going to go ahead and make my way downtown in a few minutes.  I don't have to be there until 1:00, but with the inevitable traffic from this morning's bridge run, I'd rather get down there early and have some time to walk around rather than sitting in a traffic minutes before I'm supposed to start playing.

DR DAW - As for your Twitter question from yesterday...  If you have protected your updates, the person who has requested to follow you will just simply not get any sort of notification from you.  However, if you are "Blocking" someone, then the next time that that person tries to Follow you, they will see a small pop-up - more like a "slide-down" - telling them that they have been blocked.

*If it makes it "easier" - You can put something in your Twitter bio about only Following people you already know, and that if anyone new wants to Follow you, then they must have an actual bio and/or website link in their Twitter profile.  You do not Auto-Follow, or Follow Blindly.  -I've seen some people do that, and if I come across one of those, I can forward their username to you.

I believe this coming week's episode is the last produced for this season. LIFE has neither been canceled or renewed but is on the bubble and waiting for a decision by NBC (its chances are no better than fair). The fate of the show will be announced in May if not before.

I'm home safe and sound and want to say thank you for the good travel wishes that were sent out yesterday. We had a pleasant, uneventful trip. The days yesterday and today or pretty, but the mornings were cold and I didn't take a jacket with me. I'm sitting here now feeling chilly as I type, and I didn't bring a sweater or jacket into my office, but I wish I had. When I mow the grass in a few minutes, I'll not need anything to feel warm, I'm sure.

For those who were interested SPIDER'S WEB is an Agatha Christie mystery play that is much more light-hearted than her big three stage hits: MOUSETRAP, TEN LITTLE INDIANS, and WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION. There is a murder, and the second act does have, as her plays usually do, some surprise revelations and the revelation of the murderer's true identity (it isn't who the audience is led to believe it is throughout the play). The play ends with the areest of the guilty party but then there is an additional scene with the husband and wife that is completely unnecessary and irritating, accomplishing nothing but dragging the play out about 10 minutes longer. That would be the first thing that needs to go.

The theater group had Americanized the play, resetting it in Washington, DC, I guess so the actors wouldn't have to deal with pesky British accents, though I thought maybe a bit of flavor was lost doing this. It was well cast, and I was proud of myself for guessing the murderer's true identity though the direction of the particular actor made his actions more obviously suspicious than they needed to be.

Still, it's a typical one set Christie mystery with no great demands on wardrobe and only a couple of stage props nececssary for the story (a desk with a hidden compartment; a wall treatment that reveals a secret alcove behind it).

Last night I was telling my niece about Passover coming up. And I was telling her about the sedar and asking her if she'd like to hide some matzah. I told her the kids hide it and then the bubbie and the zaida give you money (or a treat).

So she turned to me and said, "can i hide two pieces of matzah?"

Hmmm… tradition for us is a bit different as an adult hides the matzoa (Afikomen) & a child finds it.  In our family only one child received the prize.

“At every seder table, three pieces of matzah on a plate are covered with a special cloth, called a matzah cover. Early in the seder, before the retelling of the Passover story, the middle piece is taken out, held up for all to see, and then broken in half. The larger piece - the afikomen - is wrapped in a napkin, or placed in its own special bag, and hidden."

At the end of the Passover meal, all the children run to look for the afikomen. The winner gets a prize”
I always wondered how my father managed to hide the Afikomen without our seeing.  I remember the year I was the only child left to find it.  At one point during the Seder, during my first year of telling the story of Passover, everyone began chuckling.  I felt hurt until later when they explained what my father had been doing.

TOD  a meteorologist - and/or be on The Weather Channel.  I did fulfill this in a mini way by buying the "Weather person for a day" at a local NBC station in a fundraising auction.  It was fun.

I'd also love to do historical research - like the tv show where they research the history of objects for people.  History fascinates me and I may have gone that direction if I hadn't been discouraged by one of my history professors in college.  He had me teach the class for him one day when I was just a sophomore in college - he said I would be very good at being an historian but thought I'd be bored with history. Don't know why I listened to him.

anyway, I have done geneology research and do lots of research for my cases, so it isn't what I dreamed about, but it is an aspect of what I do. I've also volunteered at museums both the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.  I also took clases on Sioux City history and the Lewis and Clark expedition (they came through here twice).

Our museum here is moving to a new location that will be huge compared to what it is now. I'm thinking about seeing if I can volunteer there from time to time

BK, re:  new helpers--I know how loathe you are sometimes to try "new" technologies, but as I (and several other DRs) have mentioned repeatedly, PayPal has a built in shipping label program that will do 95% of the work for you.  You don't need to do delivery confirmation, though with their electronic metering system it's a lot cheaper than if you get DC at the PO.  I use it all the time for stuff and it's easy, painless and you only pay for the cost of shipping (and paper to print out the shipping labels on).

Greetings all.

It's a windy day in Manhattan. I ran some errands, got the laundry together for tomorrow and I will listen to Beverley at 5pm.

BTW, Hello Back to Michael!

The one thing I would still love to do is have my own radio program. It's wonderful being a part of Showtime when it airs but I would love to have my own program, like Prairie Home Companion or one of the NPR/PRI kind of shows.

It's supposed to be beautiful tomorrow, getting into the high 60s with lots of sun. I will do the laundry and I may go out to Target in New Jersey to look at jeans. I need a new pair and the crap, excuse me, the jeans they have at Old Navy and the Gap look like they were taken out of a rag barrel. It makes me feel old. I don't want to wear jeans that have been artificially distressed (Old Navy shouldn't treat jeans as they would in a costume shop) and look dirty. I'm an old codger, I admit it. Also, I'm not going to pay $25 to $30 for the same dirty, distressed, ugly jeans. I can take the PATH Train to New Jersey and walk to Target and get nice, brand name jeans for $15.99. Of course I have to buy the wrong size because nobody sells inseams of 28 anymore, except on line, and I'm not going to buy jeans on-line because I want to try them on before I purchase them. Call me old-fashioned. Hey, I've been called worse  ;)

That's it for now. Didn't mean to rant but that stuff just comes out sometimes.

DR Matt H, I'm glad you had a pleasant time.  Sometimes it is nice to take a short trip & relax.

Thanks, DR Jane. Yes, you're right that it's good not to get in a rut and to change up the routine every now and then. My problem is that I LIKE ruts and love routine. It's there that I feel most relaxed and comfortable, believe it or not! It's when I leave my comfort zone that I tend to tense up at the unexpected.

However, this was a most pleasant night away from home without work pressures weighing down my good time. (I did not enjoy sleeping in a bed that wasn't mine, however.)

So, I still have about 10 episodes to go. I doubt I'll get them all done tonight, but I should get more than half of them done before the end of the evening.

If I find I have some free time tonight, I may try to get last night's FLASHPOINT watched.

Yesterday in the car, Evening Primrose.  What a joy to hear the entire schore in the original verses with all the dance music.  It is a crime against gazelles wearing earphones that this has been unavailable all these years.  On the way home, I started Anya.  Very different from Aherns and Flaherty's score to the animated film, and Constance Towers' interpretation is a bit different from Liz Calloway's.

Anastasia, tell me who you are.

Today In Theatre History: APRIL 4

(courtesy of Playbill On-Line)

1964 Anyone Can Whistle opens on Broadway but this tune carries just nine performances at Broadway's Majestic Theatre. Stephen Sondheim composes the songs and Arthur Laurents the story of this mayoress who tries to revive her town with a fake miracle.

Also, I don't think this was linked yet. It's the first of the month and time for

Leading Men (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/127919.html)

our own Mr. Nondorf's monthly column for PBO

and here is some "sad" news

Guinness Book of World Records (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/127942.html)

Sad in the fact that Perfect Crime is one of the worst pieces of crap I have ever seen in my entire theatre going history. I think I would rank it as possibly THE worst thing I have ever seen, and I've seen many things over the years.

I know that some Equity actors are kept employed but this dog should have been buried long, long, long ago. The only reason it's still running is because someone has very, very, very, very, very, very (that's six verys) deep pockets.

Hello, from Fort Stockton, TX.

We only did a 4-hour drive today and will do about the same tomorrow to Fredrecksburg.  Then, Monday morning, it will only be about an hour or so drive into Austin.  If we didn't have the animals with us, we would drive all the way tomorrow, but the place we're going to board them is not open on Sundays.

We'll probably be staying for a couple of weeks in our Austin hotel, waiting for opur furniture to arrive, shelves to be built, etc.

We've had a household chore day, too.  This past week we had the remodelers here (yet again) to finish off the once rat-infested crawlspace.  It's now a handy dandy storage room and boy do we have room for even more CRAP now.  :)  Then Zach and I stained the new pieces that were cut into our deck, and I did 2/3 of the backyard lawn (as those who have been Chez Moi know, we have an enormous backyard, almost an acre, and sometimes I just don't have the stamina to mow it all in one run).

This week has been an up in a few ways.  Since Fall, Joe has been down physically and therefore down mentally too.  His ongoing disease EMS has been joined by high blood pressure, borderline diabetes, diverticulosis, and other polysyllables.  Then he injured himself in December doing his stretching exercises and has two slipped disks (which is why I was so please with Jose's link to Jerry Colker's website, since Jerry had two slipped disks and has evidently overcome the problem quite well--I am going to write to him).

About a month ago he got back into the daily stretching exercises with hopes of adding the half-hour walk once the weather clears up a bit.  He has tried to exercise in the morning when I'm at work--so my ears don't burn with all the cursing--and do housework before I get home.  It's a push, and he is aching everywhere and cramping all through the evening, but the sense of accomplishment keeps him smiling through it.

Every few days there is a down day, like today, when he cannot push beyond it and lies down most of the day, but they are few any more.  Wednesday, my day off, we put the den back together:

In September we replaced the sliding glass door in the back with a really nifty one by Pella.  We rolled up the rugs, moved the furniture, and all that stuff before the guy did the installation.  And we had never put the room back together.  Wednesday we did.  And Joe is a neat freak, remember.  He vacuumed several times, mopped the floor with the Swiffer three times, and then we marked the floor for the rug.  We had decided to move it closer to the fireplace, which involves, for him, triple measuring, putting down masking tape to mark the rug and couch placement, rolling out the pad, getting the bumps out, rolling out the rug, getting the bumps out, and vacuuming of the rug.  No small task with an 11"5x 16' Karastan oriental.

Of course, once we got done and were exhausted, Joe decided it would be better to move the couches closer to the fireplace.  Oy!  [Or as we say in Esperanto: Oj!]

But the good news is that the den looks like a den again, and Joe is smiling, and I am smiling.  It is really becoming rough, because even with the disease, he refinished our floors in the other house and painted all the rooms among other things, and now he just doesn't have the energy that he did.

I agree with a lot of what you said. It seemed so out of the blue when his partner left. Although i will give them credit. You can barely tell she's pregnant (although she has not been seen very much from the waist down). I thought that whole storyline was so-so. I am okay with his new partner. Although she has taken a while to get used to. But she is not as good as the original.  That said, this week's "abduction" or whatever happened to reese has been quite interesting.
I am very curious to see what happens.

Back from the LACCTAA event which was great.  Unfortunately, our sold out audience was only two-thirds full - the reason, I think, is because some stupid sickening Hollywood crew was shooting some stupid sickening movie on the campus - they'd "dressed" the outside of the theater department as a "library" and since we had a bunch of people signed up for today who'd never been to the campus, I'm sure they just gave up on trying to find us and went home.

I think it's a little late for that.  Way too much school would be needed to get to that point.  It's a nice thing to think about every once in awhile though.  The  bathyscaphe, Trieste, toured the country when I was a wee bairn after it had measured the depths of the Mariana trench in the Pacific.  My mother took me to see the Trieste (I was about 5, I think), and my memory tells me that one could actually get in it.  And I did.  And I had Rachel Carson's "The Sea Around Us" and learned about so many things.  I still have the book too.

Fantastic news!

About an hour ago, my power blew out. The apartment was plunged into complete darkness and I thought, oh, no, another blackout. Only the power was on outside the window, and once I realized it wasn't the whole building in darkness and only my apartment, my super had to go to the basement and restore it. I have a bad lamp ceiling fixture in my kitchen and it's been short-circuiting. So next week, the electrician comes.

And that is not a movie in my VCR!

Otherwise, the show will be about this time, next year (the specific dates have not been set).  In the past, TAO's musical of the season was in December, but there have always been weather issues that cancelled shows and some money was lost...especially this last year.  We had to cancel three of our last four performances. :P That's not good for a small and fairly new theater company.  So from now on, the musical spot will be in the spring. :D

Maybe it is a Canadian Passover custom ;)  Who would search for the hidden motzos & did they receive a prize for finding it?

Or maybe a way to keep the kids busy ;)

DR Kerry, how long do you have DD Sugar for?

Have you thought about returning to school to pursue your dream of becoming oceanographer?

I think it's a little late for that.  Way too much school would be needed to get to that point.  It's a nice thing to think about every once in awhile though.  The  bathyscaphe, Trieste, toured the country when I was a wee bairn after it had measured the depths of the Mariana trench in the Pacific.  My mother took me to see the Trieste (I was about 5, I think), and my memory tells me that one could actually get in it.  And I did.  And I had Rachel Carson's "The Sea Around Us" and learned about so many things.  I still have the book too.

I thought you once dated Captain Nemo!

Today's Theatre Charleston Unified Auditions went well.  They were paced slower than some of the other group auditions I've played - they had a group of 15 people each half hour - so, what would have usually been a two-hour day for me, ended up lasting three and a half hours.  But it was a nice day, a nice theatre, and during the breaks I was able to look out on a beautiful alley/walkway from the stage door.

All ages and "levels" of talent were represented today.  Like any other audition session, there were some good people, some bad people, and some "questionable" people.  One young gentleman almost made me laugh out loud with his rendition of a modern musical theatre classic, and one woman made sure to inform me right after she completed her monologue that she was going to sing a cappella.

However, I think one of my "favorite" moments of the day was when a young woman pointed to a few measures of her music.  She was letting me know that she was going to slow down in that particular section.  In her own words, "I'm going to get retarded right there."  ;)

Jose, how was your special dinner?

AH!!!

My special dinner.  :)  I headed back to FIG (http://www.eatatfig.com).  FIG stands for Food Is Good, and I have to say that the Food at FIG is good. Very good.

I ordered a couple of small plates tonight:
Spicy Lamb Bolognese, Ricotta Gnocchi, Pecorino (again)
Crispy Caw Caw Creek Pork Trotters, Beluga Lentils, Roasted Beets
Pan Roasted Cauliflower with Mustard Butter

And for dessert:
Greek Yogurt Panna Cotta with Strawberries

All in all, another wonderful meal, and another great dining experience.  "Andrew" took care of me at the bar tonight, and he even offered me a sample of the restaurant's house-infused pear brandy.  That was tasty too: brandy, pears, vanilla, star anise.

:) :) :) :) :)

While I was dining at the bar, a couple from Atlanta came in and sat next to me.  They were in town for the Cooper River Bridge Run, and were at FIG for a post-run celebratory dinner.  They were having some trouble deciding what to eat and drink, and after Mark - the other bartender on duty tonight - had indicated that I was currently eating what he was suggesting, well...

It turned out they have an apartment-share in New York City, so we started talking about favorite New York restaurants.  Well... :) When the husband admitted to having a sweet-tooth, I asked him if he had ever been to Levain.  When he answered, "No," I gave him the address and the website.  ;)

*And they thoroughly enjoyed my food and wine suggestions too.

Remember the angel collection I told you about a while ago?  Well, it's all packed away now and I'm decorating the piano and shadow box for Easter.

Let me guess: nails and thorns everywhere?

Bunnies!

I have to say that since I was a kid, Easter has been my least favorite holiday!

When I was in grade school and singing in the church's Junior Choir, Easter Week was my favorite time of the year.  There was just a nice range of music and "emotions" from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday.  And since we went to a Catholic grade school (and high school), our "Easter Break" started on Good Friday.  :)

*I'm just trying to figure out why retail stores choose to close on Easter now.

The other shows in their season will be "Misery" (based on the Stephen King book and the movie) at Halloween, "Poona the F*ckdog" (yes, this is a real play about a f*ckdog named Poona) will be their December alternative holiday fare and "Othello," which will be in the summer after "The Brain."

Theatre Charlotte is also doing MISERY next season. I had no idea that there had been a play version of that book.

DR Ben - I like the jeans at Uniqlo (http://www.uniqlo.com/us/) in SoHo.  They carry some very basic styles, as well as some more modern "distressed" ones.  Plus, they offer free in-house alterations.

My favorite of the episodes I watched tonight had the gorgeous  and young Perry King and Nicholas Hammond as brothers shooting a surfing movie. Nicholas was the expert surfer and Perry was the photographer who lifted a man's wallet to pay for some expensive camera lenses he needed. Unfortunately, he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and saw a murder, so the hit man began searching for them. Taut episode that I really enjoyed.

You're welcome, DR Ben.  They cost a little more than $15.99, but they're still cheaper than what Levi's are going for lately.  However, they also regularly put their denim on sale.  Worth checking out.  And the in-store "scenery" also tends to be worth checking out too.  ;)

As I was saying, I started off with the Spicy Lamb Bolognese, with Ricotta Gnocchi and Pecorino:

I was a little "worried" that this dish had been rotated off the menu already. FIG has a seasonal - almost daily - menu, and Sam had told me earlier in the week that the gnocchi was "almost gone".  Thankfully, it wasn't. ;)

For my main course, I combined another one of their appetizers, the "Trotters", with a serving of their Pan-Roasted Cauliflower:

The "trotters", as you can see in the pic, were not served "on the hoof".  Instead, they braise some pig's feet (actually from the foot to the shank), and then pull the meat off of them.  The meat is then combined with a couple of other ingredients, rolled into a cylinder, and chilled.  Before serving, a piece is sliced off, and then heated up and crisped in a pan. I guess it's like a high-end version of pulled-pork and scrapple. ;)

And I'm pretty sure that their Pan-Roasted Cauliflower would convert any cauliflower-no-liker.

Today was the first day that the restaurant had started serving strawberries this season.  To "celebrate" that fact, they were also serving special champagne cocktails made with freshly muddled strawberries.

Back from the Gardenia and a list show.  I'm not going to write about it too much in the notes but suffice it to say it was a textbook in what not to do in an act - everything, in fact, I used as illustrations in my Cabaret Workshop.  There was one fantastic arrangement - a ragtime version of The Man I Love - I gave major props for that (John Boswell on piano) until I found out they'd "borrowed" the arrangement from Sharon McNight.
