1. Saint Patrick
Saint Patrick, known as the Apostle of Ireland, was a high-ranking Christian clergyman. His legendary use of the shamrock as an illustration of the Trinity led to its adoption as Ireland's national symbol.
2. Ireland
Ireland was Christianized by Saint Patrick in the 5th century. He and his successors founded churches and monasteries that became centers of Christian art and refinement. Saint Patrick's Day is the most important national holiday in Ireland.
3. Feast Day
Saint Patrick's Day, March 17, is the traditional feast day of Ireland's patron saint. In the United States, Saint Patrick's Day has evolved into a celebration of Irish American heritage. Many Irish American communities hold parades, with celebrants dressed in green to symbolize the lush Irish landscape. Some people take it a bit further and dye their hair and food green, and some communities (such as Chicago) go so far as to pour green dye into rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water.
4. Shamrocks
Shamrocks have been considered good-luck symbols by the Irish since early times, and shamrocks or various representations of the plant are frequently worn on Saint Patrick's Day. The hop clover is widely accepted as the original shamrock picked by Saint Patrick. The name shamrock comes from the Irish Seamrog, which means "little clover."
5. Leprechauns
In Irish folklore, leprechauns (Old Irish for "small bodies") are mischievous little old men. These elves, who work as cobblers, are believed to know where gold is hidden.
6. Rainbows
Does tracking down a leprechaun and his hidden pot of gold sound improbable at best? Many people believe that the leprechaun keeps his gold at the end of a rainbow. Have you ever seen the end of a rainbow? Interestingly, one of the definitions of rainbow is "a goal, hope, or ideal that is unlikely to be achieved or realized."

Der B watched The Wedding Crashers yesterday. He is now doing the commentary track.
He has been warned: he'd better have Doctor Who recorded for when I get off work tonight, or I shall be quite angry with him. He managed to bollox up recording Good Eats for me on Wednesday, and I was not at all pleased.
Some of the reviews are in for Entertaining Mr. Sloane, the Roundabout's next entry (Off-Broadway) in their season. The reviews are decidedly mixed. Oh, well. Not surprised. Every so often Roundabout hits a home run but 9 times out of 10 stuck their productions are stuckin the middle, ranging from truly embarrassing (The Women) to just plain mediocre (not walk out at intermission bad, just kind of tedious).
DR Dan: I read somewhere that the DVD of THE QUIET MAN is a very disappointing transfer. Please give us your impressions of the color quality and sharpness after you've watched. Thanks.

I'll will review my opinion after tonight's viewing. You have to understand that after watching this film through shoddy, cropped and faded prints on broadcast TV over the years, anything would have been a significant improvement. The first time I watched the DVD, I found the color and crispness mesmerizingly eye catching.
The DVD I have is the initial release from a few years back and not the more recent collector's edition.

I've been listening to Irish tenor Frank Patterson, who was a dear friend, and I still mourn his passing. I met him in the late 1980s after he'd been in John Houston's beautiful film THE DEAD (why isn't that on DVD?). He, his lovely wife Eile, and their son had a house in Bronxville, and every year Frank produced a St Patrick's Day show at Radio City on the Saturday before March 17. I think I scored, over all, around 5 of them. There were clog dancers, harpists, pipers, Eile's brother-in-law was a Dublin comedian who hosted, performers came from all over the east coast. Frank had a couple of sets, accompanied by Eile on harp or piano and the band. They were gloriously tacky and a lot of fun.
I still get an ASCAP royalty every year from Frank's "America the Beautiful," which is on one of his television programs they still play on PBS. Here's to Frank! I still miss you.
Sorry to say that both Quiet Man DVDs are appallingly bad, image-wise - soft, verging on out-of-focus and looking nothing like that gloriously photographed film should look. One hears rumors of a new DVD coming from Paramount, who now owns the Republic library.
I shall write TPunk's paper. In fact, I've already started it. I have no idea what subject she's supposed to write about, but it's quite good so far.
When we got there, we found that they had a sneak preview of The Playboy of the Western World with Siobhan McKenna before the Peter Sellers.
My friends found it boring. As for me, after the first half hour it took before I could understand a word of the dialogue (real Irish dialect, as opposed to movie dialect), I thought it was a lovely film, a lovely film.
So in college I checked out a recording from the library of Siobhan doing the play, and I taped it on my old Wollensack. Ah, for recordings of plays! I used to drift to sleep listening to them.

eBay has a slew of "Song of the South" DVD's for auction. I just purchased one (using the "Buy it Now" thing) It's sad that Disney won't re-release it - legally that is.
I got one a couple of years ago from www.efilmic.com, but you had to have a specific link, you couldn't (and still can't) find it by doing a search on the site. I no longer have that specific link, though. :-\ The copy that I got looks darn good enough for me. :)

Derek's Bears went to visit friends (of theirs and Derek's) in the Spa town of Daylesford, (About three hours drive away). At one stage we thought our plans were being derailed. The trains only run on Sundays there we had to settle for ice-cream instead of a train ride.

Single strap of fabric flowers, gathered at the waist, a pleated balloon skirt with fitted hem....dress is green and blue chiffons criss-crossed at the bodice, matching green low heeled shoes and evening bag. Opera length gloves and rainbow earrings complete the ensemble. 8)
I am not sure where they are going since the gentleman is NOT wearing evening dress, or perhaps they are going to his flat so that he can change and he is picking her up on the way. ;D

In honor of the holiday, for dinner tonight, I had Corned Pork. No, I am serious. My friend made it from scratch using pork tenderloin. It was wonderful, and it had far less fat than corned beef.

We're supposed to get a bunch of snow this weekend. If you watch one channel it's 12 inches. If you watch another it's 4-6 through Monday AM and then snow all day Monday. So I'm hoping we get enough to get snowed in on Monday. The timing is pretty good. All the carpentry work was done on the new house and it looks great. The termite man did his thing at both houses, so all I have left to do is go to the grocery store and get settled in my house. I may paint my home office, but not sure about that yet

IN JUSTICE did something a little bit different tonight to get the case going, but the resulting show was just as entertaining.
A sad note. I read on the internet today that Jason O'Mara has been cast in an ABC drama pilot for next season, so it looks like he's been released from any obligations to IN JUSTICE. I take this to mean the show is not being renewed for next season. I'm unhappy about that. I've really grown to love it.
I have a SONG OF THE SOUTH VHS tape made from the Japanese laserdisc and that DVD imported from, where was it, Thailand or the Phillippines? In any event, the DVD looks better than the tape, but neither looks as good as an official Disney DVD would look.
There was talk last year that Disney was at long last going to release SONG OF THE SOUTH on an official DVD. I guess the new Disney head man has vetoed that proposal. They will be fresh out of vault classics by the time THE LITTLE MERMAID is released in a 2-DVD enhanced set in the fall. I know they can go back and start double dipping on them, but I think SONG OF THE SOUTH would be one of the biggest sellers of all time if they'd only show some sense.
On eBay a couple of years ago, someone had a Japanese laserdisc copy of this movie that was a former rental (it didn't have the Japanese subtitles during the songs that all of the other laserdiscs had). Anyway, there was a Buy It Now price of $1,350!! The bidding got up to about $800 when someone actually bid $1,350 and bought it! I couldn't believe that someone would pay that much. All I kept thinking was that that's $1,350 that the Disney company isn't getting...from just one person...and that there were other people willing to pay at least $800!!
