Title: MARCH TO THE BEAT OF A NEW DRUM
Post by: bk on March 01, 2007, 12:18:03 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very March-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently Marching to the beat of a new drum, only they can't find the beat.

Favourite board games:

Monopoly (I have only played the UK version)
Cluedo. (Is that Clue in the USA?). I have even used it as a teaching aid for Deductive reasoning.

Stockmarket and Squatter were also very popular at times. I suspect the latter was Australian.

Trivial Pursuit at times. (I'm not usually very familiar with anything to do with sport or TV series).

Favorite board games (that I can think of):  Sorry, Aggravation and Monopoly.

Favorite card game (it's pretty much the only game that the family plays):  Phase 10.  It's like Gin Rummy but you have a special deck and for each hand, you have to get specific card patterns and get them in order.  The first person who gets to Phase 10, or with the lowest score if two or more get it on the same hand, wins.

Okay.  Here (finally) is my review of The Brain From Planet X (http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Spirtas-Taylor-Lauren-others/dp/B000N8UZKE/sr=8-1/qid=1172734337/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7422810-3076119?ie=UTF8&s=music).  Let me know if it's too...much ;):

Quote
THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X is the kind of musical that musical theater lovers love. It’s a show with a fun tale to tell and a great score. The story (as synopsized in the booklet) by David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel is not just a spoof but also a loving tribute to the science fiction B movies of the 1950s. You can tell that the authors know and love the genre. What’s unique about the story (at least, these days) is that it’s not specifically based on any previously existing material. It’s an original musical.

The music and lyrics by Bruce Kimmel are melodic, catchy, fun, touching (when appropriate) and just overall well-written. The whole score sounds like it could’ve been written back then and it would’ve been a hit. AND there’s an actual theremin playing in the opening sequence!  It’s perfect!

All of the performers sing their hearts out with great energy and spot-on delivery. You really wouldn’t know that most of them are students at Los Angeles City College. They’re professional caliber.

Kritzerland has put out some wonderful CDs in the short time that it’s been around. Everything’s been top-notch and this new CD is no exception. Highly recommended!

Holy Moley! 25 Pages on a Wednesday Night?

Good morning, all!  DR MissKaren, you've always been a goddess in my book.

Too little sleep and too early morning appointments make Larry a sad boy!  I want to go back to bed, but I have to be out of here in a short time.  I shall accomplish all my errands, and get myself back here to await news on tonight's dinner with our DR Cillaliz and assorted friends and work on Ms Joanna Gleason's orchestration.

Games: Hearts, Monopoly, Bookworm

Good Morning, Dear Larry.

Enjoy your dinner tonight. Miss CillaLiz is coming downtown tomorrow and we shall visit and play and eat.

The Japanese restaurant directly across the street from the theatre is only OK. I've been there a couple of times and the service is adequate (not bad, but not particularly good) and the food is decent. Even though it's close, I'd say no to Japanese. Film Center Cafe on 9th Avenue has spruced up and it's now trendy, trendy, trendy. It's also busy and loud. It's kind of close (9th Avenue and 45th) but not a go unless you can't find another place. The Hourglass Tavern on the corner of 46th and 9th Avenue (one of the last restaurants on Restaurant Row) is fun but small. Zuni on 43rd and 9th is good. Is that close enough?

My, my, all this talk about restaurants and I'm not even going to dinner with you people.

I'm also seeing Curtains later in the month. My theatre buddy wants to go so I promised I would see it with him.

The morning ritual of washing my oatmeal bowl is nigh.

I'm listening AccuRadio and Cole Porter just sang "You're The Top"

AccuRadio is beta testing a Build Your Own Station. I like it! I have chosen Broadway Classic, Broadway Modern, Oldies (60s) and Pop Standards. It's a nice mix and so far no repeats.

I only remember one scene from ANY WEDNESDAY (although I remember I didn't think Mr Jason Robards was right in it) - the people are in a taxi playing some kind of clapping/word game.

It is pretty funny, and I would guess it was very funny onstage....kind of like the word game in YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU ("Everybody got sex?")

Der Brucer and I tried to play Clue with the grandlads once.  William was too young to understand the deduction idea of the game, and Magic Mommy being around didn't help matters any.  It was William's turn, and she told him "You have to guess who the murderer is."  (She really does talk like that.)

William got this sly look on his face, and replied "They all did it!"

It's going to be fun later on, when he's old enough to read and enjoy Agatha Christie's books.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...

Alas, I'm up since I had two very disturbing dreams, back to back, I believe...  The first one involved the death of a friend... The second one seemed like a scene from one of those "trendy" Japanese horror movies (like "The Grudge").

Needless to say, the dream about my friend's death is not sitting well with me.  And, since in my dream, I found about his death via a headline on Playbill.com - he's an actor - I was a bit hesitant to open my internet browser this morning.

-I'll be making a phone call in a few hours.
Title: Re:MARCH TO THE BEAT OF A NEW DRUM

...And the horror movie dream... A basement of a warehouse... It was raining outside... Lots of running water inside too (faucets turned on)... Workers continuously scrubbing down the walls... Dirty water coming out of the faucets - Is it just rusty water?  Or is it something else... The the walls started to bleed... Then a small door started to open...  Then...

:-\

Well... Again, another vivid dream.  And I'm only spooked by it since I seem to remember so much of it.

On to happier topics... Like the Topic of the Day...

Board Games: Scrabble, Life, Parcheesi, Monopoly (although I don't think I've ever played Monopoly according to the real rules).  And sometimes there's nothing like a basic game of Checkers, and if I'm feeling particularly brainy that day, Chess.

Card Games:  Blackjack ;), War, Go Fish, Crazy 8's, Old Maid, Spit, and whatever that game is where you place one card on your forehead.  ;)

Other Card Games: Killer Bunnies, Skip-Bo, Uno

Other Games: Battleship, Operation, Ice Breakers, Connect Four

I remember playing Red Rover, Red Rover in the front yard with neighbor kids as dusk settled on our little cul de sac. It's not a board game but we were more inventive in Coon Rapids in the 1960s. We didn't need no stinkin' board games. We played outside in the fresh early evening air  ;)

Of course we did play Sorry and Parcheesi and Monopoly, too.

Title: Re:MARCH TO THE BEAT OF A NEW DRUM

Does Scrabble count as a board game?  I kind of enjoy that, as long as you play with people who allow you to check words and don't go in for the hardcore challenging and losing turns aspect.  If there's challenging, it just gets too intense and doesn't seem like fun at that point.

One of the made up rules we always played with in Monopoly was putting all paid tax money and fines onto the middle of the board.  Whoever landed on Free Parking would get to pick up the current pile.

We also had a "baby rule" (used if you were playing with someone very young):  once you bought a property, no one else could buy the other properties in the same color group.  It would make the game go so much faster.

I play Scrabble for blood.  I also liked Boggle.  The early Trivial Pursuit editions I liked a lot...the Genus version, the Silver Screen, the Vintage years (1920's-50's), the Boomer edition.  Had 'em all.   I somehow suspect I would not enjoy many of the later editions that would include stuff from the eighties, nineties, and up till now.

I also like Yahtzee, Wise and Otherwise ( a variation of Dictionary where players finish some obscure "wise saying" and everyone tries to guess the real one), and Cranium has been fun the few times I've played it.

I used to like some military re-enactment board games of the Avalon-Hill variation like Gettysburg and one about the War of the Roses called Kingmaker, but I haven't played them for years.

There was also a baseball game called Strat-o-matic Baseball which was very detailed and based on actual percentages of actual players.  Every year, you ordered new cards of all the players on all the teams with their latest stats.  You managed, made up your line-up, pulled your pitchers, picked pinch-hitters...all very complicated based on statistics and odds and rolling the dice.  Larry Drake and I used to play all the time.

There was also a Sherlock Holmes game that had a booklet of mystery scenarios which you had to figure out.  It could take all afternoon.

As a kid I liked Clue.

I used to like Poker until it became all about one game...Texas Hold'em.

No one answered my question yesterday about Finale so I'll ask again:  is it a good software package to create midi files by copying notes from sheet music to a staff view?  Is it overkill--I see there's a skinny-down version called Finale SongWriter, but according to reviews for that product, it's limited to eight staves, which wouldn't have worked for something like the FOLLIES overture.  What can you Finale users tell me?

One DR (was it you, DR Jose) mentioned watching GREY'S ANATOMY tonight. You do know it's a rerun (it's the episode where the men go camping). My favorite card games are hearts and gin. We played hearts in seemingly endless weekend marathons back in college. I really loved it then, and my first partner and I used to have another couple over to play hearts every Tuesday night back in the 1980s. Really haven't played it much since then.

One of the times that we had this topic before, I was thrilled to learn that several DRs here also played CAREERS as kids. It was by far my favorite board game when I was growing up, but I couldn't find people who'd want to play it much. They always wanted Clue or Monopoly.

I love Clue as well, and bought the computer version so I could play it alone.

I guess I don't have the right friends because none of them would think of playing board games now.

I think I also mentioned before that as a teenager, I was introduced to Candy Land. A friend had a very much younger brother who loved playing Candy Land, and I'd go to my friend's house and end up playing Candy Land with his little brother. I loved it.

As far as current computer games, I play two all the time that come with Windows: Space Cadet 3-D Pinball and Spider Solitaire. Love both of these.

I have the CSI computer game sitting on my desk, and it's been here for years, and I've never cracked it open. (It was a Christmas gift.) I keep waiting for a lull in TV and DVDs so I can open this game and check it out, but that lull never seems to come. There's always something new to watch.

Ah yes, I remember this...nothing fostered hatred between players more than landing on Free Parking.  And what was worse is if you hit Free Parking right after someone had just raked in the cash, and you got nothing, or if best, a pittance of maybe $5 at most...

I have not read any comments about last night's IDOL. But here are my thoughts:

The only woman i really love is lakisha. I really enjoyed her again last night.

I do like melinda. But even though i think her timidity can be charming, there is something about it that sometimes puts me off a bit.  But she was very good last night.

I really cannot stand antonella at all.

Although i think haley, leslie or alaina will be the ones to go. I actually agree with the judge who liked the beginning acapella part of leslie's song. I wish so much the rest had been like that.

For some reason i do not like gina. And while jordan has a nice voice, i just don't really gel with her personality.

I think stephanie is so polished and always comes across so mature.

And i do like sabrina's power.

Again i have not read any comments here yet.

I did like the show. Although probably not as much as most episodes.

I thought some of hurley's backstory was predictable and not that interesting. And the car stuff on the island, while slightly amusing really was not all that interesting.

For me the show only really got interesting in the last 5 minutes. Seeing kate and locke and sayid and then meeting the french woman. Now that was interesting. I wish that had been the focus of the show.

Thursday morning greetings!

TOD - As a librarian, How can I never have heard of Bookopoly?

Now that I have that out of my system...

Board Games:  I also loved Careers (which I still have) and Barbie:  Queen of the Prom (which I'm thinking of trying to sell, along with all my other Barbie stuff).

Card Games:  My family played a form of rummy called Liverpool, which sounds kind of like the game DR George described.  Also, Spite & Malice, which I've totally forgotten how to play.

The worst of last night's Idol performances, to me, were:

Antonella, Alaina, Haley and Sabrina.

Melinda, Lakisha and Gina were the three best, in that order.

Jordin, Leslie and Stephanie were in the middle for me.  I like Stephanie but I HATED her song choice and delivery.  I couldn't understand most of the lyrics, so thrown away and off-kilter did they seem to me.

Antonella and Alaina would be GREAT choices to leave tonight.

My cousins, Molly and Bobby, and I and my little brother would often play Monopoly on Saturday nights while watching the evening monster movies while our parents were playing cards.

Aggravation, Sorry, Operation, Parcheesi, Battleship, Chinese Checkers, 21, Password, and Connect 4 were other favorites as a kid.

As as teen I would often play Uno with my best friend Dave and his parents.

As an adult I have enjoyed many card games...however, I forget how to play them and end up needing instruction each and every time.

Bookworm is the only computer game I have played....and as we all know, it is most addicting!

Remember it's not the end of the world.

I like to invite questions DURING the presentation, not just at the end, whenever feasible.

Today's TOD brought back a fun memory:  About this time of year in 1991, 1992, and 1993 we were a host family in a church-related program that brought a group of Japanese college students to our community for about a month.  With each of our girls (Kaori, Mayumi, and Yuko) we played a game of DS Rob's called Pizza Party.  It didn't involve any reading and was a great way to break the ice at the beginning of their stay, when they were very shy about trying to speak English.

Here, in full, is the review of the Brain CD that just appeared on talkinbroadway's All That Chat:

Is the science fiction musical about beings from beyond landing on our planet, The Brain from Planet X, earth-shaking? Don't be silly. On second thought, please do. This good-spirited goofiness is very entertaining if you're willing to let yourself be swept up in it. The zest of the cast makes that easy. They seize their many comic moments in this broad parody but rarely oversell it. There is good stuff to work with here, and most of it works.

The new show affectionately sends up not only the excesses and clichés of stories about visitors from beyond but also musical styles. It's an off-kilter love letter to the old school musical comedy genre, and it sometimes winkingly does some self-referencing. The orchestrations by Larry Moore are a major source of enjoyment, very much on the same page as the material itself, having sparkle and splash. The delicious instrumental accents, flourishes and undercurrents dress things up and scream a love for the style of traditional, perky show tunes. Listen to a singer hold a note on a big finish while the band kicks and builds; the five-person band led by keyboardist Richard Berent is bright and spunky.

The song about tapping your brain becomes a cheery big company tap dance number called - what else? - "The Brain Tap." The plan for "The Plan" is to give us a number that works as a plot song and has spoken and sung lines (the giant free-floating Brain says, "You're giving me a headache and I don't even have a head"). Playing the actual Brain, Egbert Bernard nails the smug attitude and daffiness needed for the character.

The brains behind The Brain are Bruce Kimmel and David Wechter. They collaborated on the script (bits of cutely cornball dialogue are sprinkled throughout) and the two songs mentioned above. The rest of the score is the sole work of the comical Kimmel, who has produced many satisfying albums chock full of show tunes. He produced this one as well and directed the show in its premiere last December with students from the Theatre Academy at Los Angeles City College and guest professional artists.

"The World of Tomorrow" is a peppy pick-me-up that Kevin Spirtas knocks out of the ballpark, playing the wannabe inventor imagining the far off future year of 2007. Set in 1958, the piece is full of that era's sensibilities as well as the nonsense of the cheesiest old movies about flying saucers. Those UFO sightings allow the chorus to comment with straight-faced simplicity: "There are saucers in the sky/ And we really don't know why/ All we really know is that it can't be good." What is good is that when the spacecrafts land, so do the jokes.

The aliens have a strong desire to take over the world as we know it - but wouldn't you know it, they also have strong desires of a sexual nature. The female and male aliens (Alet Taylor and Cason Murphy) both find more than a passing attraction to the males they encounter while visiting our planet, resulting in two well-done showstoppers. "I Need an Earthman" (her solo) and "All About Men" (his) are both boisterously bawdy, providing some vamping amidst the camping. There are other references to various characters' sex lives (or, mostly, the lack thereof) that are endearing more than leering, so The Brain from Planet X is only rated "X" for X-tremely funny.

As for last night's LOST:

SPOILERS.

*
*

Again i have not read any comments here yet.

I did like the show. Although probably not as much as most episodes.

I thought some of hurley's backstory was predictable and not that interesting. And the car stuff on the island, while slightly amusing really was not all that interesting.

For me the show only really got interesting in the last 5 minutes. Seeing kate and locke and sayid and then meeting the french woman. Now that was interesting. I wish that had been the focus of the show.

I kind of thought the show was a stop gap episode--a breather with some comic relief needed after the intensity of the past few episodes, so I didn't mind it that much.  What is getting on my nerves is that new, good-looking couple who have suddenly been interacting with the other characters as if they had been there all along.  The producers are saying that this couple will be playing a big part in upcoming events and will even have their own flashbacks.  But I keep expecting the others to look at them and say, "Who are you?"

I remember seeing an interview with the guys who invented Trivial Pursuit.  They explained that they know the questions so well that when they played with each other, instead of asking the question, they would give each other the answer and they would have to come up with the question!  The real problem was when the answer was something like "three" and they had to come up with the question on that specific card!

O Fearless Leader ~ I let amazon.com browbeat me into buying something -- (what a racket!) so I can now finally post my review (well, after the 24 hour check-into-my-background period...) BUT the good news is what I purchased:  I bought another copy of The Brain! ... so my review will have lead to the purchase of at least one Brain CD....so my entire review will be posted on amazon "within 24 hours" and my CDBaby one, a slightly condensed version, was posted yesterday so when the powers that be at CDBaby deem it worthy, it will go up (guess they have a 24-hour waiting period, too).

...and I'm happy to see that I'm a smart reviewer because kudos go out to you and DR Lar in mine...
I will keep you posted when they are both finally approved and up for public viewing...

Back from a breakfast meeting at Hugo's.  And who should I run into but ASCAP's Michael Kerker (always a delight), who's telling me he is loving his Brain CD, and also Stephen Schwartz, who tells me he'll listen to it when he gets back to NY tomorrow.  He had planned on listening to it in his rental car last week, but a CD got stuck in its player and he couldn't get it out to put the Brain in.

I know exactly what he's talking about - certain CDRs are made thicker than normal CDs and they simply don't come out of car or computer players easily.  I had one get stuck in the car player and I had to jimmy it out with scissors - and it has happened way too often on the laptop.

Oh, sorry... I actually did mean to answer your question yesterday, but since I didn't, I shall answer it now.

Finale is primarily a music layout/engraving program.  Yes, you could use it for creating MIDI files, but if that's your primary reason for getting Finale, I'd suggest looking at another program.  Cakewalk does have a staff view and note-entry mode - although the easiest way to create a note-by-note, staff-by-staff MIDI file, would be to play/record the notes into the program.  And there are other sequencer programs out there too.  *If you're a Mac person, you could also use Band-In-A-Box if you have the orchestral instrument sound packs.

As I've explained to other people before - and even to myself - Finale works best if you treat it as a graphics program and not necessarily a music program.  But if you don't have a keyboard/MIDI set-up, and will be 'step entering' all the notes, Finale may serve your needs (too).

I'd suggest going to www.finalemusic.com, and downloading the free NotePad software.  It's a very basic, stripped down version of Finale.  However, it will give you an idea of the user interface and the process involved in getting the notes from the page to the computer.  Then you can decide from there if you want the full-blown program.  However...

You mentioned SongWriter.... I'd look into the next step up, PrintMusic.  More staves, more voices.  However...

*If you understand the whole "voices" function, you can place more than one musical line on one staff (like a countermelody).  And I believe you can place from 4-6 voices on one staff, so... That may be a workaround.

So... I think that answered your question, and it may have confused you too.  But it's a start.  Hopefully.

:)

Free today only for you.  And really concentrate on the New Moon Full Eclipse on Saturday....the moon is in VIRGO....so we can really get some stuff done...if we set our minds to it.

Yes, I did, DR JRand.  And Thank You.

I really was thrown for a loop this morning.  I woke up feeling very tentative, and actually a bit scared.  And it's been a long time since I've any sort of dream like the ones I had last night.

The worst part about the one where I found about my friend's death, was that it followed through to his funeral, or at least some gathering... And someone was bad-mouthing him.  Again, most unsettling.

And then when all the little children came out of the wall, covered in mud and blood(?) and started screaming and running around...

I spent a good amount of time right after I woke up trying to figure out exactly what would have triggered such dreams.  Was it the Mexican food I had last night?  In any case...

Thank you for the dream interpretation.  And the "warning" for this weekend.

OH!

DR Dan (the Man) - One of the really nice thing about the Finale family of notation products, is that they all the file formats are compatible - backwards and forwards - with each other.  Meaning files created in Finale, can be read and edited in PrintMusic - even NotePad! - and vice versa.  -Of course, if you start to edit a piece in a "lower" program then your editing power may be "reduced".  So...  If you find you like working with SongWriter or PrintMusic, you can then upgrade to Finale later (or Allegro) with no compatibility issues.

LOST spoilers

I kind of thought the show was a stop gap episode--a breather with some comic relief needed after the intensity of the past few episodes, so I didn't mind it that much.  What is getting on my nerves is that new, good-looking couple who have suddenly been interacting with the other characters as if they had been there all along.  The producers are saying that this couple will be playing a big part in upcoming events and will even have their own flashbacks.  But I keep expecting the others to look at them and say, "Who are you?"

I know what you mean.  I hope they actually tell us who they are before they start having flashbacks though.

And besides them last night there were many strangers hugging sawyer and kate when they returned.

Here, in full, is the review of the Brain CD that just appeared on talkinbroadway's All That Chat:

There are other references to various characters' sex lives (or, mostly, the lack thereof) that are endearing more than leering, so The Brain from Planet X is only rated "X" for X-tremely funny.

Very nice review, indeed, Bruce. I especially liked the "X-tremely funny" part; why didn't I think of that? :)

I still don't know what an orchestator does...other then yell at his guests when they arrive at his home environment late.

I will take the serious side of this, DR MBARNUM. Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts, so praised here, deals with orchestration in the third concert/lecture. Frankly, I think that's a bit ambitious for the 7- to 15-year-olds that comprise the audience, but it's all ambitious--and all wonderful. In one hour LB gives you an overview of orchestration. Netflix, disc 1. I'm loving it.

As for the temperament of said orchestrator, well, you two can work that out between yourselves.

THAT...or, you could send parts in advance, have the visitors learn their songs.  Then, you could spend an evening before the tour rehearsing everyone to perform a cappella.

Then...you could lead the tour and every now and again stop and sing an appropriate song at some spot on the tour...something that was sung at that location in a movie or on Broadway.

Allegro?  That's a new one on me.  I'll investigate that as well.

What's up with tonight's prime time TV schedule?

All repeats, except CBS???????

It's the first week of March and they're already pulling this crap?

SURVIVOR is the only thing on CBS that isn't a repeat. As I explained before, ratings sweeps ended last night, so they're not going to waste new episodes every week. We'll get an occasional new episode for our favorites in March and April (I don't think HEROES gets a new episode until April 2nd), but nothing ongoing until the next sweeps - May..

Thank you, DR JRand, for the lovely wishes about the memorial service I attended today.

It was filled with laughter and many, many tears as we remembered all the highlights of 30 years of doing all types of shows.

During my experience with her, she stage managed me, she shared the stage with me, she clothed me, and she directed me. I can't begin to describe all the memories that flashed through my mind during the service. I'm so lucky to have some of the shows we did together on tape so I will never forget special moments.

If I promise to sing very softly (or not at all), may I sign up?  :-X

After I got home, I was able to watch last night's outstanding and very scary and surprising episode of MEDIUM.

Even though I still despise the actress playing the deputy mayor and think she's so hopelessly weak in comparison to everyone she shares the frame with, the episode still was excellent.

DR Jose took me there today. It's 3 floors right across the street from the Hershey's store.  It's really funny. It has a mood thing where you stand there and it scans you and tells you what M & M mood you're in.  It had some shirts that said "I'm so over Kisses" Which is hilarious reading as you look out the window at the Hershey's Kiss.

It's like a chocolate war. There is a lot of animation etc on the outside of the store so now Hershey's is putting more on the outside of the building.  The best thing is this really cool mural. Maybe DR Jose will post the photo we had taken in front of it.

Good afternoon Dear Esteemed and lithe BK --   I haven't really been being
E & T, but I have had some really great construction help for yesterday and today and we've made a ton of progress on the "soon-to-be" theatre wall in my den.

We had to literally open the wall in several places, move the location of several studs, add some new ones, drop in a new dedicated 3-wire grounded circuit all the way from the breaker box, build enclosures to hold the 2 pieces of electronic support equipment, then re-drywall and patch everything.

And all of this got done in 5 hours on Wednesday and 3 hours today, by 2 people.  Huzzah !!  I'll post a few pics of the progress and the changes either later tonight or tomorrow.

In the south, some folks say, in relation to a piece of cake or pie, "Cut it half in two".

And as to the TOD :

It certainly doesn't seem to be in fashion anymore, but I really enjoy playing Gin Rummy.  But I don't seem to run across many other people who are interested in cards.

A friend tried to teach me bridge years ago, but i was hopeless.... it also didn't really grab my interest.

And when I was about 19 or 20, I knew a couple of real die-hard card players;  one was a friend of mine's mother, and the other one was her sister.  Their name were Myrt and Frieda, and they taught me "Hearts."  It was fun to play with them, and I even got fairly good at it.  When things weren't going well for Frieda, she would start mumbling "oy!" softly under her breath.  They were a great pair !!

OH, I forgot Hearts. My buddy Mark loves that game and whenever his family or friends from Wyoming would visit him here in Oregon we would always play a game or five...of course I had to be taught all over again each time they visited...but it is a fun game.

Another board game from my childhood:  Go to the Head of the Class.

When I was in my 20s I picked up an early version of Go to the Head of the Class at a yardsale.  One night my friends and I tried to play it.  Those questions were incredibly hard!  I'm talking about the 1st grade questions!  We eventually quit and put it away in frustration.

One game I am a complete flop at playing--Othello.  I just can't seem to figure out the strategy behind it.

And as I've mentioned here before, I never learned how to properly play Chess.

But I can play a mean game of Feely Meely.  And I'm a master of the fake-out in Hands Down.

I see "Scrubs" and "30 Rock" are new tonight, though.

I love board games! Except Monopoly. I can't stand Monopoly.

There's a game somebody at church taught a bunch of us, but she didn't know what it was called. We named it Switch 100, but maybe somebody here knows its official name. It involves a pencil, a die, and several pieces of paper. Anybody know it?

My favorite card game is Scum, the official card game of our family reunions.

We invented a new game at preschool today called Brody, Put Your Jacket On. It came about when Brody wouldn't put on his jacket. It requires a jacket, a swingset, and a three-year-old who is ticklish.

DR FJL, we ran into everyone backstage except for John Bolton!  It was a lovely time.  Yes, I'm back from CURTAINS, and I liked a great deal of it.  They've got three weeks of work before opening, and I wish it well.  Curiously, I think Act Two is in better shape than Act One, but I like the cast a lot, and there are wonderful things about the show.  I think some musical numbers coud use trimming, and I'll be curious to see it after it opens.

I've had a very busy evening. I started out watching the rest of THE GANG'S ALL HERE featurette on Busby Berkeley which I hadn't completed last night before IDOL started.

Then, in honor of bk's adoration of him, I turned on the commentary to listen to Dr. Drew Casper wax poetic on the film. I only listened to maybe ten minutes of it and cut it off. It didn't sound as if he was going to reveal anything extraordinary about the movie, so I put it aside.

Next, I watched THE BURMESE HARP, one of the most beautiful antiwar films ever made. Such striking images, haunting music (and choral singing) used throughout, and very expressive performances.

I also watched the two interviews on the Criterion disc, one with the director and one with the top billed (but decidedly NOT the leading man) actor in the film. Both offered fascinating facts about the making of the movie.

By this time, the IDOL results show was over and on my DVR, so I selected it to watch.

I wasn't more than ten minutes in when the phone rang, and it was my sick friend Jeff who had not picked up his prescription (if I had known he had a prescription, I would have gotten it filled yesterday when I drove him home). So, I had to drive over to his place, get the prescription and his emplyee health cards, find a pharmacy that was open (thank you, Walgreens), and get his meds.

It's been raining all day, so doing all of this in the POURING rain was not fun, but I hope it eases his discomfort.

I'll be curious to see what Cillaliz has to say about Curtains.  She liked it a lot better than I did, but from everything I've been reading, it doesn't sound like they've done much of anything since LA - and if that's true, I just sit and scratch my head in wonderment.  I thought quite a few of the songs (especially in act one, and especially with Ziemba and Daniely) were third rate Kander and Ebb.  There were some nice things in the show in LA, but overall, for me, it missed more than it hit.  Part of the problem was tone - it kept veering all over the place.  Plus, David Hyde Pierce's character constantly saving the day got really tiresome after about the seventh time.  And hopefully Mr. Ashford has done something to help what was very feeble choreography out here in LA.

Just adding my thoughts on CURTAINS - The second act moves like a house afire (other than a slow spot with a love duet), at least as musicals can go.  I was stunned by how involved I was in watching the detective unravel the mystery in the second half, and was surprised by the turns of events in a gratifying way.  But the first act feels a little padded, including with show-within-a-show numbers, and I wonder if they can cut this 2:35 show down to 2:10 or so.  But funny, funny, funny throughout.

BK, I really do like CURTAINS, maybe even more than I did in L.A.  but I must admit at this point what I'm enjoying the most is watching it change and evolve. I see a lot of changes since L.A. and I saw several changes since last night...ok, I went last night. Many of the changes are subtle, but I noticed them and I think they make a big difference. Since L.A. some lyrics have been changed, scenes have beesn shifted around and a number of things slightly rewritten. The choreography is different in some places as well. If someone thinks it hasn't changed, they weren't paying attention.
It's my understanding there will be a number of even bigger changes in the next couple days.

Is there room for improvement - yes. I think trimming a couple of the numbers would help considerably. But they are making changes and I think it keeps improving.  I'm really tempted to see it one more time before I go, just to see the changes I heard about tonight, but I'm not sure if I will.  I could see it Saturday night....we'll see.

I agree with FJL, the second act is hot and much better than it was in L.A. even though I liked it there.  I don't think the first act is bad, it's very funny. I think they will get it there by opening.

And I didn't hear exactly what the changes will be, just that there will be some changes in the next couple days

So, I do love CURTAINS. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to laugh, who likes show business and who likes a little mystery mixed in.  And I can't wait to someday see it in it's final form.  I think it will be a smash!

I may have been exaggerating hoping they bring CURTAINS down to 2:10 from 2:35.  I'd say 2:20 would be a better goal, refreshing my memory from the song list in the Playbill.

Glad to hear of the changes - are any of the songs different or is it just rewritten lyrics?

So it is written, so it shall be done - page fourteen.  Not too shabby a way to welcome March.

I Miss The Music is quite a bit different if my memory serves me correctly.  Not only the lyrics have been changed, but it seems to have been expanded and the context of the song seems slightly different all in a good way.

There is a slight reprise of Show People that isn't in the playbill and probably isn't long enough to be listed as a song.  I understand there are other changes in the works with at least one song, but I don't know which one. There were a couple songs in the second act that may not have been changed much if at all  but the order was switched and it flows much better this way

I think they fixed some of the "all over the place" issues you were talking about. There is probably a little less exposition, but they've also added a little here and there so some things are clearer.  You have to remember I saw previews in L.A. So some of these changes could have been made there, but I know it's still evolving and it's a fascinating thing for me to watch.

Good Morning!

Well... That was one looooooong ride home on the A-train.  Due to all the track work at Columbus Circle, the train cme into the station very slowly... And left very slowly.  There was another guy waiting next to me on the platform, and we both commented that should just go ahead and open the doors while the train was moving since it would have basically been like stepping on an escalator - or like stepping into one of those revolving restaurants like "The View".  Thankfully, once we were past 72nd Street, the train was back up to speed.  But, man was it slow at 59th.

As for Curtains... I enjoyed it too.  There were some very "in" theatre jokes - some which may end up being too "in" for some people - but they gave me a good laugh.  -While the woman in front of me would lean over to her friend, "Why was that funny?"  In any case...

There are some good numbers, and there are some not so good numbers.  The cast is uniformly excellent, although I think there's one very, very, very slight case of miscasting, but that may even itself out as more changes and refinements get instituted over the next couple of weeks.  The band sounds great, and there was only one point in the show where the orchestration popped out at me (in a not so good way) - but that may have also been a sound balance issue, so...

-And I've always had an issue with choreographed curtain calls...  Let the cast bask in the applause, and not worry about counts and steps, I say.

It was great following the Great DR elmore backstage afterwards to chat with the cast.  -And anyone he didn't know, I seemed to, so that was fun too.

All in all, a lovely evening.

And, yes, the rain has come to NYC.  It's been ebbing and flowing all night.  It sounded like another downpour just came and went.  -Alas, when it rains continuously, I think I'm hearing water drip in the walls here at the apartment.  We used to have a leak in one of the bathrooms here, and I always expect water to start dripping from the kitchen vent.  -But that's probably just the sound coming down from the exhaust pipe on the roof.  I hope.

DR JRand - I believe it was you who asked about the new M&M's World New York.  I thought the store itself had its own website, but I can't seem to track it down.  -Nor an old receipt with the info.  In the meantime...

Goodnight.
