Ben & Jerry's and any dairy for that matter is not good for clearing up those throat problems!  They just create more phlegm of heavy consistency.  How will you be able to tell Mr. Haines what to do, if you are not in good voice.  You certainly don't want to have to call in Marc Chapeaux to substitute-produce and direct.

Good morning DR Elmore (Good night).

Hello, DRTomovoz!  What a pleasant surprise to find you here.

It's freezing in my apartment this morning and I am not happy about it.  I'm ready to drag out my summer clothes, and I can't.

So, today's back to Rodgers & Hammerstein to get through a bit more of SHOWBOAT.  It should be a good day.

Larry, no more cheap porn???

Tonight I will be attending the opening performance of "A Little of What You Fancy" an "authentic British Music Hall" starring none other than the much mentioned Anthony Morelli (there are other people in it too). I will see the show at least 3 times, perhaps more. I's dedicated, I is.

Larry and Rodz, let me know what show you are attending and I will try to go that day as well.

I'm listening to BBC Radio 3 at the moment but don't know what else I will be listening to the rest of the day. No movies or TV or DVDs or VHS planned either.

Later, gaters,

Dan, I remember the Ruth Buzzi take-off and thought it was riot.  The first time I actually saw Kathryn Kuhlman, I thought it was a joke.  She was ajoke in many ways, actually.  But definitely a lot more fun than all of the ones since her.

Good vibes, xylophones, and a whole orchestra to Messr.s Kimmel and Haines.  And remember-- for the next couple of days---SSSSHHHHHHHH!

CD's--  Tony Perkins (thanks again, Tom), Richard Costa, Anita Ellis, Cinderella Humpmuster (thanks again, Jack)
LP's-- a wonderful Joan Sutherland album that has one of the most gorgeous arrangements of "Falling In Love With Love" on it.  I should put that song on a continuous loop.

Ant-- Break a leg!!!

Today is a big day in our home... its the Vixter's 12th birthday and it is also opening night for her first community theatre show Peter Pan

They actually had their first live audience on Wednesday night, when they had their final dress rehearsal they allowed the local senior citizen groups to come in and watch the show for free.

Last night, DR TCB asked:  "MattH, I know it isn't Ask BK Day, so I will ask you instead.  I am curious about your Cagelles in your production of La Cage.  Are you using all men, a mixture of men and women, and if only men, are they gay or straight men?"

We have a mixture of men and women. The men are all gay. According to the director, he's hopefully adding two more Cagelles to the group to make 8. But I'm not sure that's going to happen. I know the two he wants, and they're not known for following through with promises. (4 men, two women thus far).

DR George, I would double check your check register against your statements, and itself.  Sometimes an 8 can be mistaken for a 3, and vice versa.  That might be what set you off by 50 cents.  (In currency, not the currently popular rap/hip-hop artist.)

I dislike intensely (for I try not to say hate) when my check register does not balance.

I really like this, and several theaters where I have appeared do this for final dress.

However, the theater where I'm doing LA CAGE (and earlier TITANIC and NUNCRACKERS) doesn't do this, and I wish they would.

After seeng snippets of George Bush's press conference last night, I only want to observe that the rest of the world must be feeling pretty smug about the USA right now since it's quite clear that nothing has changed relative to Washington's inability to pronounce the names of heads of state.

I am remiss.

Oh, yes, I am remiss.

I fully intended to comment upon yesterday's word of the day.

"Scuttlebutt" is a great Navy term.  A "scuttlebutt" is a water fountain.  Because of this, and what people do while hanging around water fountains, the Navy terminology for "rumor" or "gossip" is also "scuttlebutt."

All day long, yesterday, I kept reminding myself about the word of the day. I knew I had something to say.  But every time I tried to recall the word, it would first come to me as "Hucklebuck."  As in "Do the..."

And Georgia Gibbs wasn't anywhere in sight.

Terribly odd, that.  Not once in my 23 1/2 years of Navy service did I ever do the hucklebuck.  Nay, I don't think my memory even allowed it to surface...until yesterday.

What I thought was weird about this episode was that it was the first time I can remember that Sydney (Jennifer Garner) did not go out on a case.  But i was surprised at the identity of Sophia (I wasn't surprised that she wasn't who we thought she was, but I was surprised she was Irina's sister, if that makes any sense).

Good Morning!

Whew!  I somehow slept slept through my radio-alarm this morning - well, just the radio, none of that pesky alarm buzzer for me, No! - and when I opened my eyes for the first time this morning, it was already 9:50.  I usually open my eyes sometime around 7:30 and/or 8:00 - yes, I do stay in bed after opening my eyes, but I do open them.  In any case, I am feeling a bit tired this morning.  I guess it was all the lifting and shifting and moving of the boxes yesterday.  -Right before I went to bed last night, I looked around my bedroom and realized just how stuff I moved over last night.  I have floor space!!!

Today's plan - after I finish waking up - is to get the kitchen packed up, all my knick-knacks wrapped and boxed, and wrap my CD towers up in the green plastic wrap stuff I love so much.  And then I shall by 90% ready for the moving van on Sunday.  I was thinking of heading to see a play tonight in today, but I really want to get as much as possible done today so that I can take tomorrow off.  -Since I was "given" the extra day due to the U-Haul availability, I might as well take it as a gift of sorts.

There are a bunch of "very Richmond" events going on tomorrow, and I'd like to attend a couple of them.  If I happen to make great progress this afternoon, I may go ahead and see the play tonight, but I have the feeling that once I'm sitting in a dark theatre for about 15 minutes, I may come down with a case of the "nods".  The "nods", not "nodes" which are entirely different things.  Although I guess one could have the "nods" and the "nodes" at the same time.

What the !@#$%&!!!???

In any case...

Good morning!

BERSERK! is one of my favorite words.....and the movie has Joan AND Ty Hardin.  Whew!  It also has the SAME circus as the one in CIRCUS OF HORRORS!  Oh, and Judy Geeson as well....  Remember all those English birds from the mid-60's?

DRMBARNUM I watched two of the Dressler-Moran films this morning, and I laughed OUT LOUD MANY MANY TIMES.  Both of those women are hilarious - Dressler has the edge, but Polly Moran gives her a run for the money.

"Who is that?"
"That's my husband.  Why?"
"Well he just had a peculiar expression on his face."
"Where did you expect him to have it?"

And then of course there is the little boy who gets his foot stuck in a cuspidor in Grand Central Station......

I too first became aware of Kathryn Kuhlman through Ruth Buzzi's spot on mimicry of her.

Now very late at night on TBN you can see Kathryn in a couple of her large crusades - and on other nights you can watch Bishop Fulton J. Sheen.  Whew!  Kathryn is unique and sincere and so self-effacing that it is difficult NOT to respond to her on some level.

And I think that must be the SAME Dino....

Peggy woke me up this morning by jumping on my bed...with a bag in her mouth.  It was a very large bag of Uncle Ben's Original Converted Rice, and it was very empty.  Peggy seemed proud of herself.

There was uncooked converted rice all over the kitchen floor...and the hall floor...and even on the carpet in my room.

Normally it's Fletcher who causes all the trouble, but this time it was Peggy...or maybe they were working in tandem.  In any case, she seemed very proud of herself.

Some trivia for today: on this day, ninety-two years ago in 1913, Gideon Sundback patented the zipper.

Friday media report:

CD (car) - The Producers OCR, in preparation for seeing the matinee Sunday (more on this later)

Here are some excerpts from the review in this week's Dayton City Paper, the alternative (free) publication:

"Bob Amaral (as Max) is an astute comedian that knows how to sell a joke.  But he can't seem to find a proper place in the sluggish opening scenes or maintain enough energy to command all of his musical numbers.  Andy Taylor fares better with his well-rounded performance as Leo Bloom, Max's mousey accountant and partner-in-crime."

Russell Florence, Jr. describes the company as "...an off-kilter group of performers..." and concludes his review with the snarky description of The Producers as "...a musical that only deserved four of its record-setting 12 Tony Awards in 2001."  He doesn't specify which 4 were deserved and which 8 were not.

I'll let you know Sunday evening whether or not we (DH Richard, my mother, and I) agree.

DR Jennifer - Oh, you're right.. Montreal, Quebec...  It's all "north" to me.

;)

But isn't part of Fete de Neige held in other parts of Montreal?  Or is the big Spring Festival held in Montreal?  Or do I just have too much dust in my head right now.

???

It's not really that north. Montreal is only a 6 hour drive from New York City.

The annual Fete de Neige is held in Quebec City.  I'm not sure which Spring Festival you mean.  There are many festivals in Montreal (including the Comedy Festival and the Jazz Festival).

Today is a big day in our home... its the Vixter's 12th birthday and it is also opening night for her first community theatre show Peter Pan

They actually had their first live audience on Wednesday night, when they had their final dress rehearsal they allowed the local senior citizen groups to come in and watch the show for free.

I've done this once, already...but only once.  And I only checked the amounts against what's showing on-line.  I haven't compared it all to the "official" paper statements that I get in the mail.  We'll see after that.

Is the Dino who played for Kathryn Kuhlman, the same Dino that still plays piano (a mirrored one) on TBN all the time?

Yes! That's the very same Dino at the piano!  He didn't dress quite like that during the seventies on Kuhlman's show.

I'm with bk - where do these weeks go?  Excelelnt vibes and marimbas to bk to keep that voice in top shape - you'll need it to bark at Guy Haines when he refuses to take your direction.

I've been reading the notes, but haven't had a chance to post in quite a long time.  I guess that makes me only half e&t.  "Zombie Prom" opens tonight, it's a tight show, it's sad it doesn't get produced enough, it's such a cute, fun thing.  I have an interesting ZP story regarding the composer and missing pages, check it out on my   online journal  (http://www.livejournal.com/users/maestromatthew/)

It's so wonderful to be back, and now... I'm ready for my close-up

Whenever I hear "Dino st the piano", all I can envision is Fred Flinstone's pet dinosaur perched at the baby Grand, tickling the ivories.

CD:  Buddy Clark & Vic Damone
DVD: I'm watching all the Errol Flynn extras from my new boxed set.
TELLY: Just finished watching the delightful DAMSEL IN DISTRESS, one of my favourite Fred Astaire movies, despite Ginger's absence...made up for by the amusing Burns and Allen and the great Gershwin score.  It' also fun to watch how they hide as much as they can Joan Fontaine's execrable dancing and have Astaire dance around her.

In my CD player at work:  Robin Hood:  First complete CD recording, in James Stuart's new edition, of the popular romantic-comic operetta (1891)

After that will be...something to be determined later.

In my VCR:  "Children Will Listen:  When Kids and the Arts Come Together."  The documentary of when a whole bunch of kids put on Into the Woods, Jr.

In my other VCR:  a tape to tape tonight's "Star Trek:  Enterprise."  I am going to miss this show when it ends. :'(

In my DVD player:  "The Incredibles."  I watched this a couple of weeks ago, but it was a full-screen copy from the library.  I bought the widescreen edition yesterday and want to watch it again and look through all the bonus material. ;D

VCR - The Joan Hickson version of Miss Marple's Murder at the Vicarage - DH Richard and I are SO disappointed in the new MM series showing now on PBS and we wanted to see this version of the story just completed.  We'll watch it tomorrow evening while we eat pizza.

One of the local PBS stations reran both installments of the new MURDER AT THE VICARAGE from 2-4 a.m. this morning, so I recorded it to watch at some point this weekend.

I had all the Joan Hickson Miss Marple films on videotape, and when they were released on DVD, I bought them all over again even though they used the video masters they already had for the DVDs. Sadly, some look better than others on DVD, but they're still terrific, and I'm glad to have them.

(Anyone want the videotapes for a cheap price?  :) )

Report on Joe's Birthday:

I made a Word file here at work and copied all your lovely wishes, with avatars and all, into it.  The cheap freebie HP Printer I brought to work a couple of years ago to print color hasn't been printing color since they upgraded to Windows XP, so I thought the driver was wrong.  Wrong!  I just realized it needed a cartridge.   :-\

So I printed out all your lovely comments and avatars (Except DR DearReaderLaura's, which I printed out today.)  (And except the scrolling text, which prints as "Scrolling Text".)

Meanwhile, our neighbor had invited Joe out to lunch.  This is the Good Witch of the North, not the Wiched Witch of the South.  She took him out for lobster and was ever so nice.  At one point, he spasmed and dropped his lobster in his lap.  To make him feel better, Helen said, "Oh, I do that all the time."  Then she proceeded to drop her lobster twice during the meal.  What a gal!

I got home and Joe read through your lovely comments.  No dinner for him after that big lunch, so I made myself a sandwich.  The only cake was the one DR vixmom posted, and that was filling enough.

I gave him Todd Rundgren's "Liars", and so we had a Hot Toddy evening, beginning with that, and then going through a lot of Todd's earlier recordings (made BACK BEFORE JOEY WAS BORN), at full blast, with the windows open.  Until 12:00.  And if the Wicked Witch of the South called the police, we couldn't hear them at the door.

All in all, a delightful birthday, due mainly to hhw, because this is where I learned about Todd's new album, which I must say I like very much.

And today Joe phoned and said a package had arrived from the Wonderful Land of Oz, with which he was also delighted.

Sorry I didn't post earlier today.  Busy at work, and oh...

CD Player at work:  Our very own Grant Geissman's "In with the Out Crowd".  I'm bringing it home to play for Joe this weekend.  It's his kind of jazz, it is.

And that's the SCUTTLEBUTT.

The best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry. . . .

Here I had planned to watch DVDs all day long, and I haven't even gotten to the first one! Argh!

A friend called this morning to help him set up for a margarita party he's having this weekend (had to go pick up some tables from his church, set up, have lunch, etc.) And just now got back. Yes, he invited me to the party, but I already had other plans.

I guess tomorrow will be my DVD marathon day (and Sunday, too).

For those who are fans of DEADWOOD, the actress Robin Weigart who plays Calamity Jane on DEADWOOD was a guest star on CSI last night playing a psychiatrist. The voice was unmistakable, but it was such a pleasing shock seeing her all cleaned up, with very attractive makeup and something coming out of her mouth besides that infamous ten letter word she has done wonders with in two seasons of the show.

DR George - The theme from Star Trek: Enterprise became our son Rob's theme song as he was finishing high school.  He burned a CD of his favorite music to be played before and after his Eagle Scout Court of Honor and "It's been a long road, getting from there to here..." was the first thing we heard at the conclusion of the ceremony.  Gives me chills, still.

On the second year of AMERICAN IDOL, one of their theme nights revolved around the music of Diane Warren. I didn't like any of her songs that night, but I was SO hoping Clay Aiken would have picked the ENTERPRISE theme song (written by her) to sing. I'd love to hear his rendition of it even today. It's the one songs of hers that I know which I really like.

You can't really judge how many Tony Awards an original production deserved if you're looking at a touring production, and you must always consider the competition in toto. So many things go into determining who and what wins those Tonys. (Remember the campaign for AVENUE Q last year that seemed to charm folks into voting for it over the mammoth favorite WICKED which had won most of the other Best Musical awards prior to the Tonys.)

I agree with DR Elmore. I saw the two favorites that year THE PRODUCERS and THE FULL MONTY on successive evenings and both were marvelous shows, but I thought overall THE PRODUCERS was the more deseerving of its honors. If I had one quibble, it was with Kady Huffman winning the featured actress Tony. I probably would have gone with Kathleen Freeman.

And my quibble is that Best Score Tony.  As fun as THE PRODUCERS' score is, the score for MONTY was, IMHO, better.  And I wasn't even crazy about the show....

Break an arm, leg, what ever it takes but don’t get really hurt vibes to the Vixter and Anthony!  I wish I could be there to attend both shows, I know they are going to be wonderful!

Happy B-day to the Vixter as well!  Here is a cake and balloons for you!

Get well vibes to BK as well.  Let’s get those pipes back in good working order sooner than soon.

DR Elmore—I dreamed about you last night!  I was somewhere in NYC.  I think I was somewhere near the library because it looked something like that area.  Anyway, I had my laptop with me and thought to send you an e-mail to ask if we could meet for lunch.  There really isn’t that much more to the dream that I can remember but if you dream tonight, be sure to check your ”dream computer” for a message from me!

Just heard from Mr. Geissman - he and Vinnie completed their work earlier, and the horns are indeed set to record tomorrow morning at ten - I shall be attending, unless the room is too cold, in which case I shall leave the premises, as I must protect the voice box.  But, as long as those vibes and xylophones keep a'coming this entire weekend and Monday and Tuesday, then all should be well.  I have been very quiet today, only taking one necessary phone call, and singing one of Mr. Haines' songs in a low key - it seemed to be okay.

Perhaps Mrs Darling played Captain Hook in that production.
Mr Darling may have been out tinkling bells.

Well in this particular production....Mr and Mrs Darling were played by ADULTS and all other parts were played by children.

So am I, and last week's parallel world scenario (I guess that's what is going on) was sensational; can't wait to see the conclusion tonight.

At least you and George could watch the series.  It was very annoying we didn't even get the station.  We would have enjoyed the last fcouple of shows at least.

Ben, good show vibes to Anthony!!

Vixmom-hope the Vixter had a happy birthday and a great show!

Matt H we watched EYES last night-yep, it was a good episode.  Tim Daley’s deliveries make me laugh.  He has some great one liners and expressions to go with them.

SWW I think you will be finding uncooked rice for a long time.  ;D

We started out so well today, and now it's crawled to a complete standstill in the last couple of hours.  Most unseemly.

Oh that was a Twilight Zone episode with MR BK's neighbor, Earl Holliman.

DR ELMORE - i enjoyed REEFER MADNESS - obviously done by people who originated the material onstge and knew what they wanted.  Everyone was on the same page and doing the same movie.  It was a lot of fun.  I couldn't understand ALL the lyrics, but I think if I watch it a couple of more times, I will catch most of them.

ONLY ONE THING BOTHERED ME:  a big-band sound and referenced dance routine at the Five And Dime taking place in 1936!  Most of the choreography was a few years out of place.

Neve Campbell - good dancer, not even challenged by the steps, I like her a lot.....ever since I saw THE COMPANY.

Calamity Jane's DEADWOOD word: "co**su**er."

I must hastily add that she is not the only character on the show who utters that particular epithet, but her delivery of it is particularly inimitable.

Really enjoyed LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME today. No, it's not super sharp, but I didn't notice any print damage, and the EastmanColor looks about as good as it's possible to look. Sound was rechanneled as Dolby Digital 5.1, and it's just fine.

I really like Doris' look in this movie. Her hair is short in the back but puffy on top, very becoming on her. She's not wearing ten pounds of pancake makeup to hide her freckles as she does in her Warners films, so her look is more natural, too, and the clothes fit her beautifully in this. Helen Rose doesn't get much press, but she designed wonderful clothes for MGM stars for quite a few years.

And Cagney is never anything less than galvanizing. Talk about a one-of-a-kind actor.

He has a suavity that is very appealing. I can't believe this wonderful show is dying on the vine.

I loved that his best friend made a date with the FBI agent. I also liked that Harlan now knows who the mole in the office is.

This is just a wee bit shocking, this lack of traffic, don't you think?

What's more shocking is that after having gone to the doctor on Monday and Thursday, after having taken it easy vocally all week, especially the last two days, is that Ye Olde Voice Box is still bugging me and perfectly up to snuff.  I don't get it, really, other than to say that I am creating the problem and the drama and I think that sucks potatoes, frankly.  I'm trying to get this junk out of my head - I cannot possibly have any problems with the voice box by now.  The doctor said I'd be fine, I've had two shots to insure I'd be fine, I've had a lot of EmergenC, I've been quiet, and I'm sick of the whole thing.  Enough is enough, as my sisters Barbra S. and Donna M. said.

Good Evening!

WHEW!  I've been a-boxing things up and a-packing things up for the past couple of hours.  I ended up getting a little late start since I ended up meeting Steve for lunch - BBQ - and then a trips to Target and Lowe's for some supplies.  But once I made it back here...

Whew!!!!

I just have to box the "junk".  I almost finished it tonight, but my mind started to malfunction.  "Oh, OK, so I'll just make separate boxes for the rest of the stuff I have left... And then I'll categorize it... But then maybe I should put all of the things I know I'm going to throw out in one box, and then the stuff I know I won't need to look at for the next couple of years in another box, and then the green things in here, the blue in there, and...@%$#^@%$#@^%"  It was basically a meltdown.  But I did muster enough strength up to straighten up the mess I had made in the living room and kitchen.  All better now.

I am still going to take tomorrow off - at least the morning and afternoon.  And then tomorrow night, Steve and I may be heading to a local production of SEUSSICAL.  Or not.  We shall see.

Well, let me go back at read the rest of today's posts...  I just wanted to post while I was still cognizant.  More or less...

;)

DR Ginny - I'm guessing the reviewer was "saying" that the four Tonys it should not have won would be the Acting Categories - at least if it was this current tour cast -  in his professional opinion.

;)

However, I also know that the tour is also closing soon.  They've been on the road a long time.  Additionally, that current company is a combination of the original Tour 1 (Max Company) and Tour 2 (Leo Company).  Tour 1 closed sometime late last year.  So... Chemistries may be off.  However, Larry Goldberg took over conducting that tour, so, I know that musically speaking, the show is in good hands.

Ah Seussical.. It is a favourite in this house. Colin and I enjoyed "The Producers" on Broadway and saw a production of "The Full Monty" also.  IMHO "Seussical" should have won best score that year. We hope to see a local production next week. (I do wish the Cathy Rigby  performance had been recorded and filmed).

DR MattH - As for Avenue Q "charming" the Tony voters... Well, it's not like the other shows didn't do their own bit of self-promotion last season.  Or any season for that matter.  I was fortunate to see all the Tony-nominated shows last season, and IMHO I thought Avenue Q was the Best Musical.  Yes, it may not have been as big and flashy as Wicked, but it had heart.  And it still has.  I did and do love Wicked, but I was grinning from ear to ear when they read who the winner was.

*And I may actually end up in NYC the week after next for two "parties" being sponsored by some producers... I just hope they have great party favors!

**And obviously, the not winning the Best Musical Tony has not hurt Wicked at all.  There was that astounding statistic released the week that Spamalot had opened.  Spamalot's advance sale at the time was in the $3Million range.  Wicked's advance - going into it's second year - and without any "stars" - was at $17Million!

I think it's time for my steaming shower.  I must say this chomping of gum was a brilliant idea of the doctors.  It keeps the throat moist, and I haven't tried to clear it in hours.  As he put it, "it's swapping one bad habit for another".   As I said earlier, my only problem with it is that I hate the sound of gum chewing, even mine own.

BK - Just be sure to take the EmergenC with at least some food in your stomach.  The acid - Vitamin C - can sometimes cause a little bit of acid reflux.  And since you're already feeling a little anxious about the recording sessions...

Just breathe!

I remember the day in Vocal Pedagogy class when they brough an ENT doctor in.  He equated clearing one's throat to shaking sand out of a beach towel.  -Just imagine how much force and effort it takes to shake all that sand out.  And then just imagine all the force on your vocal cords.  Good analogy.  -He advised it was always better just to take a swallow or two, or to have a small sip of water.

OH!

I didn't watch/listen to whole Presidential news conference last night, but...

Did anyone catch President Bush trying to pronounce "nuclear" correctly when was answering one of the questions.  To me, it sounded like he was trying to correct himself midword and pronounce it correctly instead of as his usual "noo-cue-ler".

I drink my morning EmergenC without food, but my afternoon and evening cups are on full stomachs.

I just have to clear it from my head - that's where this all resides.  When I get up in the morning, I shall not head trip myself anymore - I'll spend a nice weekend and I'll be fine for Monday and Tuesday.  I've done all the right things, so any problems are those I'm creating in my own head.  Tomorrow that ends.

In thinking back, I was in much worse shape for the first Guy Haines album.  I'd had a horrid flu, twice.  But, I did exactly what I'm doing now (doctor, shots) and I got over half the album on my first day.  Since I'm nowhere near as bad as I was then, I'm hopeful we can get half the album or more on Monday, which will definitely make Tuesday easy for finishing and doing whatever fixes.  Plus, during the mix, we'll have a mic there if I hear anything I can't live with.
