Title: OF CABBAGES AND KINGS OR TIME FLIES
Post by: bk on March 24, 2005, 11:58:13 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've timed the notes, you've timed the flies, you've eaten cabbages and your feeling like a king, therefore it is time for you to post until the cabbages and cows come home.

It's 3:06 am in Manhattan and I've been wide awake since 2:20.  Since this usually happens around 5 am, I'm puzzled.  I thought I'd use the time to order a few books onlne before I try to sleep.

OBSTREPEROUS!

All right, I must toddle off to the bedroom environment to get my beauty rest.  I must take care of myself because I must be VERY healthy in April, which is now just around the corner.

I have been up pondering whether I should go vegetarian or not. As one of my lenten sacrifices, I gave up meat and it really wasn't that hard. I realy didn't do much research into what I really should eat, but I think I am going to look into going mostly vegetarian. I'd still have meat every once in a great while, but maybe only every other week or so. I will have to do much more reading up on it before I make a decision though. I know it is very healthy so we'll see. Now if I could only find a book on training for a marathon when you are a vegetarian! :-)

Good morning!

Strangest weather we've been having - 60 degrees and balmy, sunny walking weather one day, sleet and snow the next, then one 42 and cloudy - still okay to walk in- day...

Crowd last night laughed in places I've never gotten a laugh before. Jose was in voice for his encore, and we have 4 shows to go to the end of the run... gosh, THAT sure went fast! Then it's load out Sunday night, truck tthe furniture back to PA, do the accounting, and move on to the next thing...

That's "head back to LA" as quickly as I can... the parents have been failing exponentially and my siblings need a hand... my brother is so burned out. I sure won't miss this WEATHER, I sure won't. But I have had such a lovely time here with old friends, with the show, the energy of Noo Yawk, the great beauty of this greatest city I know...

Still, it is a privilege to be able to join with the family to walk my parents to the edge of the world. I'm so glad they waited for me. And they did get such pleasure from my stories of Showbiz while I've been away. One last gift to them - their daughter in a show in New York. How they missed all that, when I left 20 years ago.

New topic: Jose is going to bring me sinfully delicious Hamentashen tonight! He's staying up in the very Jewish neighborhood of Washington Heights, where the bakeries apparently have all come to know him by name. Mmmmmm.... can't wait! <slurp>

Pogue- I had one of those corollas as my rental car when I was out there, and I never had such fun driving.

Reviews of ALL SHOOK UP are out and, as expected, lean toward the negative. My standards may have been lowered by seeing shows like BROOKLYN which made me want to hang myself before intermission, but I had a good time and thought there were some genuinely buoyant performances and a tongue-in-cheek quality to ALL SHOOK UP that kept things lively and fun, if not taken too seriously.

Here's a question though, I was thinking about: Has there ever been a show that just did songs that a certain artist made famous but did not write, AND did not feature that artist as a character or presence in the show either? In other words, you have shows like the Billy Joel thing that feature his compositions, and you have shows like the Patsy Cline one where someone IS Patsy. But the conceit here is neither the composer nor the artist, really, but the artist's ESSENCE is used as a marketing tool. Seems like an odd precedent. One could, perhaps, do a musical based on songs sung by Jack Jones, which would allow you to do just about anything under the sun. Or the big Three Dog Night musical...

I disagree with bk a bit over ALIAS. True, the show isn't the head-spinning romp it was in its first two seasons, but there are still plenty of reasons to keep tuning in including this latest storyline with Vaughn's father possibly being alive and being connected in some way to Sydney's half-sister. Whatever Jack is doing in the background has yet to be totally revealed; likewise Sloane's motives in heading this black ops division.

Best of all, Lena Olin HAS been signed to act in the season finale, the best reason of all for hanging around until the end of the season.

ALIAS' ratings have been ebbing away slowly but surely during the last month due to AMERICAN IDOL drawing away a segment of its audience. This may very well be the last season for the show.

I think if there was an intermission in Brooklyn-The Musical, there would also be a large number of empty seats as the lights come up at the opening of the second act.

I agree, Rodzinski. ASU (not Arizona State University but All Shook Up) was not great musical theatre but it's also not terrible (how's that for damning with faint praise). There are some good performances and it holds together better than Good Vibrations. As a jukebox musical it's somewhere inbetween. It's not a primer on how not to make a show but neither is it a gleaming example of the new form. I didn't run from the theatre tearing my hair and crying about the demise of Broadway, I just took it for what it was, a decent theme park show transplanted to Broadway. It's allowing some good people to work (Jonathan Hadary for one) and even though many people think bad shows should be squashed out like bugs, when actors get to work, even in a mediocre show I'm happy for them.

Not listening to anything right now. I have a meeting at 11am and I'm finishing up some work before that. I don't know what we will watch or listen to this weekend. Anthony has his first rehearsal/meeting for the British Music Hall show on Sunday (Easter Sunday). Other than that it will be a quiet weekend, a change from one week ago during the H/K whirlwind events.

There has been a lot of sobbing over the elimination of Mikalah Gordon last night on IDOL. So many folks are saying that she was funny and wacky and made the show fun and interesting.

For me, she made the show a joke. It's supposed to be a singing competition, and she couldn't. It was a sham that she had gotten this far on personality alone while sporting one of the most irritating and unfortunate voices I've ever heard.

Now, the remaining 10 are all SINGERS, and that's what I tune in to hear.

Morning all!  Once again, I am enjoying a cup of tea and my 2nd to last (sob!) chocolate cigar/stick.  Seems I might need to dash out and do a quick refill **evil grin**.    Ahh, if only I could.

Mom loves the pastries I brought her.  I don’t remember if I told you that I found that little bakery I was looking for and I stocked up.

I also stopped by Europa Café  and bought a flat beef sandwich, which I shared with Mom the night I got home.  It was very good even though it was cold by that time.

I did some trolling on the web last night and found we do, in fact, have Jet Blue service so whatever trip I take next time I shall give them a try.

Just for kicks and giggles I plugged in a few random dates in October and found it was like $109 to go up to NYC and $89 to come back.  Why it is cheaper to come back then go up, I don’t know but it seems a very reasonable fare.

I love the picture of DR’s Jennifer, TCB and Jed!  I’m glad that you were able to have a mini get together but I really would like it if we could pick a central spot and have everyone fly in.  That would be so nice.

When I was in my late teens, the dentist wanted to break and re align my jaw so I wouldn’t have the under bite.  I told him that since people didn’t seem to have a hard time understanding me when I spoke, I had no trouble eating and no one seemed to run shrieking from the room when I entered it, there was no way I was going to have that done.  My parents would have paid for it but I’m not sorry I didn’t have it done.

My new dentist told me that I am actually missing a tooth.  It’s a genetic thing that pops up every once in awhile.  And I did have all of my wisdom teeth taken out at the same time because I had heard it was to God-awful to go through a second or third time.  I don’t think it was that bad.  Except for the putting me to sleep part.  I hate to be out of control of myself.

DR George, it worked!  Second link was the charm!  Oh my!  He dances pretty good!  When I think of all the times I sang into my hairbrush (when I was growing up) and did my “dance”……..

Dear TCB, Sometimes there just is no justice in this world.  I am so sorry about your Mother and her friend.

Like when I worked for the courts, I heard so many sad stories—one homeless guy just wanted his dog.  They had picked it up because it didn’t have a tag.  Then they kept adding up the boarding costs.  The man had no money and the dog was his only comfort in the world.  Why they just couldn’t give the man his dog, I will never know.  I would have even PAID for the darn shot/tag but by then the boarding costs were over a thousand dollars.

He kept coming in (somehow he would managed to get the money for the filing fee) to petition the court for the dog and thus keep it alive a few more days but was turned down every time.

I left before I found out what happened.  Sometimes, I don’t think I want to know.

Today is Good Friday so that means I can’t eat any meat except Fish.  Ugh.  What that has to do with getting me a shot of getting into Heaven, I have no idea.   But as my Mom has requested (note:  my MOM requested) this one day from me to eat fish, I guess I shall survive.  Barely.  I need another chocolate cigar!!!   ;D

Yes DRMBARNUM that is Bob and Ray - and yes I saw the two WML episodes that were Dorothy's last and the one following.  It is sad to see.  Everyone is very somber, they don't play the music, and at the beginning John Daly talks a bit about her, then at the end each of the panelists says something about her.  VERY SAD.

Toyota Corolla!  I have only heard good things about these vehicles.  RED!!!  Congratulations, DR CP.  New cars are so exciting!

Nice pic DRANN!

I am listening to the Swingle Singers doing Bach as I catch up on various work items at the computer.

Last night, I watched the last of the MGM/UA titles I am returning (which, strangely, is a Miramax title), Chocolat.  I did the commentary and bonuses last night, which I had not gotten around to on my first viewing.  What a sweet little film that is.  Does anyone else think Juliette Binoche and Julia Roberts look like sisters?  I think they should do a film together.

There has been a lot of sobbing over the elimination of Mikalah Gordon last night on IDOL. So many folks are saying that she was funny and wacky and made the show fun and interesting.

There has been far more high-fiving among fans who hated her.

The Idol on Fox chat room was full of joy over her ouster.  Sure, she has fans, but you have to ask those who wail so loudly how many votes they cast for her night before last.

Obviously nowhere NEAR enough.

And that's as it should have been.

I see TV and movies in her future...but no musicals...

"Time Flies"

Hmmmm....so many images...all buzzing and diving in my mind.....

How about "Time Traveling Flies" or "Time, Inc., Flies"....or maybe "Tempus Fugits Flies" (but that's redundant, yes?).

I see flies on a clockface forming numbers....

I have a sinus headache and am trying to get my mind off it...to get it out of my head, so to speak.

You, know Jose mentioned that car accident, and just the day before yesterday I found out the woman who ran the summer camp I worked at in South Carolina died when some woman drove across the center of the road and hit her head on. It's amazing how fast someone's mistake or recklessness can end it all for someone on the roads.

What a bizarrre day!  I was wide awake at 2:20 am, went back to bed at 5:30 after doing some work on my BABES IN TOYLAND record booklet notes, called Barnes & Noble around 7:30 to ask Patty if I could stay home, went back to bed and finally slept.

I had bizarre dreams:  I was in a rehearsal at Symphony Space with Marin Alsop conducting the chorus in "Don't Cry, Bo-Peep" from BABES and telling her there are no men singing in this number.

I was wandering about asking everyone if they'd seen my wallet and terrified my pocket had been picked.  Since I've had my wallet stolen three times in the past 25 years, this is a very frightening reality for me.

So, I'm home today, and I'll work on two things:  an orchestration of "Bring Him Home" for George Dvorsky and my music report for the booklet on BABES IN TOYLAND.  I think we're getting close to a release date.

TOD:
DVD:  Scotland, PA; On Guard, which I still haven't watched after BK's recommendation
CD:  BABES IN TOYLAND, Bryn Terfel, LOOK MA, I'M DANCING!
VCR:  cheap porn

DR Larry Elmore (that is my new dream-like name for you :)):   I have performed under Marin's baton (so to speak).  I was the featured pianist at an Oregon Symphony Gospel Christmas concert many years ago.  Marin was singing along as she conducted.  I found her a bit hard to follow, but that's probably just me, as I am not a trained symphony musician.

Today's anecdote about an eccentric millionaire department:  I accompany one of Portland's wealthiest real estate magnates in his frequent recording sessions of showtunes (he actually has a great voice and does a lot of theater here).  He always mails me the scores in re-used envellopes, but with this interesting twist:  all of the stamps on the envellope are like something out of the denouement to Charade--stamps from the 20s, 30s and 40s with 1-3 cent face values, rare stamps like the Oregon centennials from 1959.  Betsy wants me to start saving the envellopes.

Jose lets add the Kosher bakery to our walking tour.  :) Please find some good bakeries with treats for MBarnum before he visits you in NY.

DRLaura your walk yesterday and the photos, especially the horses are beautiful.  Is that a pond o lake?

Joey yes, do all the teeth at once,  Be sure you have someone to take care of you for a couple of days?

You had to ask about nightmares yesterday!  I was hardly here, yet it must have had an effect on me because I woke Keith up when I yelled-woke me up too thankfully. ;D

Charles I’m also getting a new Toyota soon.

Ann the photo looks like a negative. It is better than no photo at all.

I have finally caught up with yesterday’s post but I’m ignoring our company.

One must always ignore one's company - it's simply the thing to do.

The very first car I ever purchased was a yellow Toyota Corolla back in, oh, 1972 or so, when I was with the ex-wife and baby daughter.  It was more than we could afford but we did it.  The total cost of the automobile was $1750, and our payments were around forty a month for three years.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

Yes, yes, yes...  I slept in again today...  -I guess I really have fallen back into my "show mode" sleep schedule.

All I have to do today is: (A) Walk up to Gruenbaum's to pick up some hamantaschen for DR PennyO, and (B) Get another hour or two of practice and review on the Mamma Mia! book.  That's all.  All very accomplishable before I have to head down to Theatre Row later this afternoon.

I'm actually getting a little sad that the show is ending, and that this "visit" to New York is coming to an end.  And time really has flown - I've been in NYC for three weeks!  I don't think I've ever stayed up here for that long a time before.  But I'm also excited since I know that I'll be coming back here, and I have a sense that this whole Jewish Thighs thing ain't over yet.

I just checked the weather forecast...  It seems the rain and drizzle that was supposed to hang around this weekend here in The Big Apple has decided not to. Mid-40s, cloudy, and (hopefully) non-rainy.

And it's supposed to be in the upper 60's and mid-70's when I get to Memphis next week.

:)

Hmm... I was just reading an e-mail I got from a friend.  She noted that this weekend is a sort of strange convergence of "things":

Good Friday, The Annunciation, Purim, AND a Full Moon

Could be VERY interesting in Times Square tonight.  VERY!

DR Danise - You got out just in time! Whew!

;D

-And Easter really is early this year.  WOW!

Was this week's "Alias" that one that was primarily in Spanish with subtitles?  There was a interesting blurb in the Sunday Times about it.  Originally, it was going to be a sort of flashback episode, but then the writers kept writing and writing... And it became a full-episode's worth of material.  -And, consequently, a way for ABC to draw in more Latino viewers.

I was attending Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, during the time they were looking for a new Conductor/Music Director.  Marin Alsop was one of the candidates.  They held a few open rehearsals and concerts in our school's concert hall.  It was fascinating watching the whole process.

She was - and still is - very passionate about what she does, about music.  And her connection to Bernstein is invaluable.  -Although sometimes I think she treats some of his music a little too reverentially, imho.

If I recall, she was one of the final two.  But she lost out to George Manahan. Who left a couple of years later to come back to NYC, and take his position at City Opera.

Last week during the Hainsie Kimlet celebrations while we had a good time and expressed ourselves, sometimes loudly, we were never obstreperous.

Definition: Obstreperous - noisily and stubbornly defiant; " those obstreperous boys"

Definition 2: Obstreperous - boisterously and noisily aggressive; "those boys kept up an obstreperous clamor"

Twas Patrick O'Neal, rather than Dave Niven in WHERE WERE YOU...LIGHTS WENT OUT.  Though earlier last night, I caught thte end of OH MEN, OH WOMEN with The Niv, and that looked pretty bad indeed.  Doris Day gives one of her more restrained performances in LIGHTS, though that might be because she spends a good chunk of the film passed out. LIGHTS also has Steve Allen and Lola Albright.

Last episode of MEDICAL INVESTIGATION tonight. They're calling it a season finale, but I suspect the show is not going to be renewed. Its only hope is that NBC canceled THIRD WATCH the other day, and possibly MI could inherit its 9 p.m. slot (where it's being broadcast tonight) next season. The ratings tonight will tell a BIG part of the story. Unfortunately, this last episode is actually part II or a two-part story, so I suspect it's not going to draw in many new viewers once they realize the story actually started last week.

Bizarro is one of our favorites.  The Oregonian just started running it a few weeks ago (we've had the books for years).  There was a hilarious one last week, which will probably not translate well into words.  There's a guy sitting at the kitchen table with another person wrapped up like a Mummy standing behind him.  The Mummy guy is saying "You're not going to get out of it that easily."  Underneath the caption says "At home with Christo and Jean-Claude."  I laughed and laughed.  Whenever Betsy and I see huge debris anywhere, we immediately say, "Look!!  It's a Christo installation."

Yes and no!
Call me prejudiced but I think Juliette is prettier -- not as SKINNY and gaunt! -- than Julia!

Elmore- :D

Kerry we have 8 Cadbury eggs to send to Craig in Romania.  I initially purchased 4 but he asked for more.  Considering we have two boxes of Girl Scout cookies along with other junk to send I figured 8 was enough.

DR T-o-O:  Do you know an Aussie film that has a plot about a man with gills who lives next door to two women.  One he loves, but she won't have him, and the other loves him, but he won't have her.   Ultimately, he becomes a fish and begins living in water....or something like that.

Ring any Aussie bells????
No belles or bells here RLP.

I'll ask OzDerek (more of a film buff).  He is off visiting his home in the penal colony of Tasmania.  That was PENAL.

Hello DR Jane. I find it hard to believe that in a country so influenced by the Christian Right that Good Friday is not a holiday in the USA.  Good Friday and Easter Sunday are absolute non-trading days in Australia. No sporting fixtures on Good Friday either.
Sunday is of course Easter Bunny and Hot Cross Bun day.

I wonder if any DRs Remember the 1960 song by The Singing Reindeer - "I Want To Be an Easter Rabbit".
It should be everyone's collection.

Hiya Folks!
I may have to go to the store and get me some Cadbury Chocolate and Caramel Eggs.  I should stock up, because they're only available at Easter, and I love those things.  On second thought, maybe I shouldn't stock up.

I always wait until AFTER Easter/Halloween/Christmas to do the bulk of my bulk candy shopping. A LOT of money is saved by waiting that one day. ;)

Back from a wonderfully wonderful lunch with Miss Tammy Minoff.  We went to the Cheesecake Factory.  I had the deliciously delicious Spicy Cashew Chicken and we split a dinner salad.  Tammy didn't love what she ordered so I shared my Cashew Chicken with her, which was good as I only ate half the portion, which was plenty.

After I dropped Tammy off at her car, on a whim I went to my DVD place - they haven't had anything that interesting all week, but today I arrived just in time - I got Lady in a Cage and Islands in the Stream - very exciting.  Also, picked up Ocean's Twelve, which I know nothing about, the new SE of Apollo 13, which I've never seen, and a really interesting Billie Holiday item - two CDs and a DVD in a beautiful package - the DVD contains rare TV performances, and since I only have one Billie album on CD, I thought I'd take a chance.

Photo of the bear coming shortly.

I always found LADY IN A CAGE, a rather sordid, awful movie.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILER COMING UP!

Isn't it the one with Olivia DeHaviland and a rather nasty incident involving knitting needles and a very young Jimmy Caan?

Well, I had a lovely little jaunt in my brand new red Toyota Corolla Sport into Silverlake where I picked up some interesting books on the Norman Conquest and Troy.  And also visited a little wine shop that specializes in small little vineyards.  Got a Chardonnay and a Shiraz from an Australian vineyard called Woop-Woop and another Australian Shiraz under the label of Piping Shrike.

When anyone else comes to the site for the first time after being somewhere else, do you have to wait for it to load in?  I've been having this problem lately...only when I come to the posts though   Everything else downloads in perfectly fast.

There's an article on Playbill.com (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/91962.html) announcing that Sweet Charity is closing after the Boston performances.  It's not coming to New York at all!

"The Sweet Charity company is one of the most gifted and talented group of individuals I've ever had the privilege of working with. I know I speak on behalf of my partners when I say how deeply proud we are of everyone who worked on this production. However, our weak sales on the road and in New York have left us with little choice other than to make the painful but fiscally responsible decision [my emphasis] to close the production in Boston," said producer Barry Weissler in a statement.

Finally, someone is taking BK's advice!

Aaaahhhh!

Lena Olin!
The BEST "thing" in CHOCOLAT, imho!

She played Joséphine Muscat!!! Why not!
Could have been Jacqueline Morgon or Joceline Pineau...

Leslie Caron sounded terribly british, as usual, and looked like she did not know what to do with her part, and poor Fred Molina had the most predictable and silly and ridiculously ridiculous part I've ever seen!
Aaahhh the scene where he's stuffing himself silly with chocolate in the store window!!!

I don't know too many actors who would have accepted to do that!(I guess the pay was good!)
He reminded me of Ray Bolger in Disney's Babes In Toyland!

BUT Lena Olin was fantastic!

Francois, the commentary on Chocolat actually goes into quite a bit of detail about the English cast doing a French story.  Juliette Binoche evidently wanted an international cast attached, which is one of the reasons so many other nationalities are in the film.

Pogue, the only time the page loads are slow for me is when there are pictures.  That can take several minutes, especially if someone went walking and saw things.  :)

I WISH they were taking my advice, but given the Weissler's history of NOT doing fiscally responsible things, I think they simply realized they were going to get creamed by the NY crix, and that Christina was really making noises about enforcing her contract so that she could open the show.

I've also heard that the production was truly bad.  They had all this revisionism going on, and all these "fixes" they put in, including a couple of new songs, cutting the entire first scene and song, and deleting I Love to Cry at Weddings, and turning Rhythm of Life into some kind of hip hop number.  In the last couple of weeks they'd realized that these "fixes" were not fixing anything because the original show was not broke.  So, one by one they were putting the show back the way it was - a good deal of the opening scene was restored, the replacement for I Love to Cry at Weddings was replaced with I Love to Cry at Weddings, and on and on.  These people need to stop hiring people who have no respect for the vehicle their reviving.  They need to hire people who understand the show they're doing, and who don't think they're better or smarter than the better and smarter people who originally put the show together.

French story? The book on which it's based is not French.

Francois--by "French story," I meant a story taking place in France.   ::)

And yes, though they never go into detail about it, evidently Binoche had a say in who was cast.  She had also evidently lived with the author of the book for quite a while before David Brown and the other producers had optioned the book.  The commentary says it was kind of a synchronicity--they (the producers) had thought of Binoche right off the bat and it turned out she had loved the book for a long time.

Hello all~!  Sorry for being E & T but this has been a very busy week for me.  I close mortgageloans for a living, and when  Mr. Greenspan decided to hike the intrest rate it caused all sort s of havoc.  People who were planning on extending their interest rate locks and close after the Easter holidays suddenly found out that they could not do so.  Plus beig that a lot of the schools were off this week this was a popular week for the terachers to close on their loans so we were overscheduled even before the emergency closings we had to fit in.  Then Vixter had her Peter Pan rehearsals from 7:30 - 9:30 M & W, which meant I had to drive her there as soonas I got home from work (I usually get in between 6:30 & 7)  and by time all the goodbyes are said and the clean up done and we drive home it's past 10, and I get to start my laundry and housework.  Tuesday we had Girl Scouts and Thursday she had choir rehearsal and ab art workshop at the library so DH & I stole an hour and had dinner  at a diner

Today I was actually off but caught up on the housework, and grocery shopping and then we had clothes shopping because the Vixter is growing  by the second (taller) while I seem to be doing the same (wider)

Then she had her singing lesson and then there was dinner (meatless pizza for Good Friday)  we never made it to church....

The we had Easter egg dying  and finally she is in bed the dishes are done and her I am.

Its rather a boring life although hectic....

Good Evening!

DR Pogue - Woop Woop is one of my favorites!  When it first started appearing two summers ago, it immediately became very popular.  The demand was so high that individual buyers/stores were trying to buy it right off the ship - instead of through a distributor.  There was even one shipment that got a little too jostled in shipment, and was a little "off" by the time it reached the store shelves.  However, it still sold very well.

Of course, since the demand was so high, the price started going up.  Good ole supply and demand.  I remember buying it for about $8.00 a bottle.  And my roommate was able to get a case for about $5.50 a bottle.  Now, I can't seem to find it for less than $12.00, and on restaurant menus I've seen it marked up as much as $30.00 per bottle!

Woop Woop.  Good stuff!

I don't think I ever did post my connection... Basically I assisted in casting their Chicago "company".  Meaning I was the audition pianist for them.  So, they send me passes from time to time.... Yes, that's LADY IN A CAGE. It is sordid and quite violent for 1964.

I adored APOLLO 13. I bought the original Collector's Edition release (had it on laserdisc, too) on DVD, but it's another sitting on the shelf waiting to be watched where it's been a couple of years.

I did love the movie, but I watched the laserdisc several times in addition to seeing the film in the theater, so I guess that's why the shrink wrap is still on the DVD.

It lost Best Picture to BRAVEHEART, a terrible injustice to my mind.

We had a lovely dinner out.  Our company, a local gal that now lives in Portland, stayed in town to enjoy the night life with friends.

TCB, Keith would love to open a Jewish Deli here, but we won’t. ;D

Baxter has a new home!!! :D  A look forward to the story when you are rested.

My eyes still burn.  Lights bother them more, including the light on the computer.  I had a difficult time driving to the vet today.  Oh, the test results were okay but we have to increase his fluids a little bit (the fluids we give him by an IV bag).

Goodnight.

As for American vs. Australian vs. European Chocolate - namely Cadbury...

I actually did sort of a side-by-side taste test when I got back from Australia two summers ago.  -Remember my one 17-pound carry-on that only held chocolate?!?!?  ;)  Well...

I think it just comes down to the base ingredients - mainly the sugar and milk.  I could sense the general formulas were adjusted according to local tastes.  However, I could also sense that the Australian products used better milk.  And better sugar.  Things tasted purer, less processed.  Environmental conditions, I guess;less pollution.

Australian and English Cadbury are definitely less sweet than American Cadbury - and almost any American mass-produced chocolate.  And since there's less sugar in their recipes, the chocolate is creamier, has a better mouth feel.  -Of course, there's the Crunchy and Violet Crumble which are chocolate covered "honeycomb" candy bars, and the whole point of those is "sweetness"...  But I digress...

And after reading labels, the English and Australian chocolates use less - if any - preservatives and stabilizers.

So, that's my very unscientific analysis...

Hmmm... Wonder if I can make a run to the corner store...

Enjoyed DEADWOOD. The actor playing Mr. W is, of course, the same actor who played Jack McCall last season. My goodness, doesn't he look spectacular all cleaned up! Can't wait to see lots more of him.

Yep, the kidney stone sequence was squirm-inducing to be sure. Having passed kidney stones several times in my life, I could certainly identity with the excruciating pain. (I quickly add I never had the procedure done to me that poor Al Swearingen had to endure.)

...I'm wondering if Mr. Simon - Neil Simon - that is, will be making any sort of public statement regarding the shuttering of the production.  Especially in light of some of the crap that was supposedly going on during the rehearsal process...

On a personal note, I know two of the woman in the show.  I hope they get cast in another show sooner rather than later.

The English and Australian Cadbury were VERY close.

Oh.. Cadbury Eggs.... Maybe I should venture over to Brooklyn tomorrow to head to the Chip Shop.  A great veddy-veddy English Fish n' Chips place.  They even do the the fried Mars Bars.. and fried Snickers... And friend Twinkies (with a raspberry coulis!)...  Well...  *And they give you the option of using American or British versions of the candy bars when they differ.

I think they also do deep-fried Cadbury Eggs this time of year... hmmm....

I can already feel the sugar coursing through my veins....

Ooohh...  Lunch?  Dinner between shows?

;)

Oh I would love to , and I really appreciate the offer, but I don't think it will work this trip.  We expect to get in about noon and then the  aforementioned AGP tour, a quick slice of pizza and then a 2:OO o'clock curtain.  After the show I had offered Mom dinner in the city and she said no because she still has all her Easter pie baking to do so we will be zooming out right after the show.

Definitely when you are back in May we  must make a point of meeting up...if not at Anthony's show then sometime.  I need to get the bakery walking tour too!!! Maybe when Jane is in , ifwe can get a group...we'll get you a whistle and a tour guide shirt  "We're walking,  we're walking , we're eating....."

Well... I'm kind of tired tonight... which is good since I really do want to get up earlier tomorrow.  There are a couple of things I want to get done before the matinee.

One of these things is a proper sit-down breakfast - be it a greasy spoon or something more along the line of Sarabeth's or Popover.

DR Rodzinksi - Know any good breakfast joints in this neck of the woods?

DR elmore - Do you have any plans for tomorrow morning?

OH!  And do you New Yorkers happen to know if everything shuts down on Easter Sunday here in the Big Apple?  In DC and Virginia, it's one of the few holidays where all the stores do close.  Just trying to figure out if I can make a Macy's run before Sunday's matinee.  ;)

DH a/k/a The Brit, says the reason the chocolate tastes different is that the English milk is not pasturized or homogenized, and that those processes change the flavour of the milk.

Did Bryan bring you any Cadbury "Flake" ?  One of my favorites that DH introduced me to...

Cadbury Flake always reminds me of the time I robbed the ice cream man in front of Madamme Tussand's inLondon...

Yep, pasteurized milk is the "culprit".  ;)

Reading various cooking texts, it always amazes me how "clean" the American kitchen is - and probably shouldn't be.  I've read about the towels that French bakers use to cover their loaves while they rise.  They are practically black since they are "filled" with the natural airborne "stuff' - yeast.  Good "germs".  I don't think those would ever make it past the health inspector this side of the Atlantic.  And I've sampled butter made from non-pasteurized milk/cream.. WOW!!

And Flake....Hmmm...

I've seen some ice cream places here in the States that have started offering Flake (Regular, Dark and White) as a mix-in.  Great texture!

I totally get that...

I used to have MAJOR pollen and mold allergies.  A few years ago, my doctor was actually brave enough to suggest that I not take any antihistamines or other allergy meds during "high season".  He wanted to give my body a chance to build up it's own natural immunity.  Sure, I was a bit miserable for about two weeks, but afterwards, my allergies seemed to be in check.  I still have some allergy issues every now and then, but they're not as bad as they used to be.

To add to yesterday's worst fear scenarios, mine now is that some lunatic will creep into our house in the dead of night and steal the Vixter out of her bed

There are no unlocked windows  or doors in our house ever anymore, and the alarm system goes on as soon as we are in.  I alternate between feeling like a crazy paranoid and that I am just being reasonably cautious.   We have received several flyers in the past year about 'released convicted sex offenders" moving into town.  Another reason that the children do not have the freedom and childhood we did.....

Well between doing the city thing tomorrow and the Easter Sunday festivities..church, Sunday School, egg hunt, calls to the DH's family in England and Canada and then drive to my brother & SIL's house, more  egg hunts with the cousins, dinner, cleanup and drive home... I suspect I will not be on again until Monday... and I have several closings scheduled, so that may even be an optomistic estimate

So, a happy, Blessed and Joyful  Easter to all who celebrate it

Not only is the English chocolate better, but their sausages is also better.  Probably because they don't have all the regulations we have as to what goes into them.

Jose- There is good breakfast at a greasy spoon on Dyckman and Broadway. Dyckman is the next "A" stop after 190. I think it's called the Dyckman Cafe or Diner, but it is NOT the horrific Cloister Cafe. There actually is a diner next door to that place 107 West up there, and it is only open for breakfast, but it is small and hard to get into.

My guess is Macy's is open on Easter. But I could be wrong.

Watched DVD with Elmore, SCOTLAND, PA. A modernist MACBETH that involves a fast-food restaurant. Quite well done. Maura Tierney looking as good as I've ever seen her. The underutilized James LeGros acquitting himself well in the lead and Walken doing his thing. The one quibble was the lack of the prophecy aspect of the story. The "witches" appear, but impart only one prophecy early on. This made some of MacBeth's motivations ill-defined.

I'm partial to the simple joys of a Yorkie bar.

And, yes! Rodzinski, I love Scotch eggs!   Producer Sy Weintraub introduced them to me in the canteen of Shepperton Studios and I have loved them ever since.  I finally culled a recipe for them off the internet and The Lovely Wife knows how to make a mean Scotch Egg now.  They now can be found in the frozen food section of any good English Supermarket like Tesco's or Sainsbury...even Marks & Spencer!  The Cat and the Fiddle Pub here in Hollywood makes a darn nice one too.

Did you ever experience in your Kentucky days, the phenomenon I experienced in Georgia, where you go to a bar and, on the bar, there is a jar filled with hard-boiled eggs in red or green liquid? You pay a buck and fish an egg out to eat.  I'm not sure if this is a Southern regional thing or not, but I have not seen this in other places I've lived.
