Well, you've read the notes, the notes were august, and now it is time for you to post until the august cows come home, which won't be in August.
-
And the word of the day is: AFORTIORI!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.
-
I can say that we BARELY beat out last July's poor showing in number of posts, but we actually lost to last July (I didn't think that would be possible) in number of hits. We'll have to make up for it in August.
-
I forgot to mention in my frenzy at the end of yesterday that I received my sparkling prize for last week's Unseemly Trivia Contest! Thank you very much, BK!
-
And NOW I must go to sleep. Good night, BK.
-
Good morning, all! I am not looking forward to this trip today. I will be happy to see my father, and I hope that this week will get his health back on track, On the sibling front, I am not looking forward to whatever tensions and angst are still brewing from the early July visit.
My sister-in-law Jo ann told me on the phone last night that my father, unbeknownst to me, had decided to make his own decisions on medications he was taking, which has his oncologist thoroughly angry. On top of that, since he was feeling better, he's been out and about too much every day with his lady friend, his immune system's already a mess, and he's picked up something. It will be an interesting week, As I said, I am not looking forward to it.

Vibes to you, Elmore, and your father.

August is...
Get Ready for Kindergarten Month
Family Meal Month
Children's Eye Health and Safety Month
and
Cataract Awareness Month
-
August is also
Black Business Month
and
National Inventor's Month
-
And, because food always seems to get into these things
August is also
National Peach Month
National Catfish Month
National Harvest Month
and
National Water Quality Month!
-
And the word of the day is: AFORTIORI!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.
Do you mean A FORTIORI, technically a phrase, not a single word? Because if you do, I agree, even more so!
-
A very good morning to one and all! I had that conference I had to go to last week and I forgot to charge my laptop for the bus trip yesterday so that is why I was E & T all last week.
I'm sorry for the problems you are going though, DR Elmore. My very best vibes to both you and your father and also to your family. It sounds like everyone could use them.
Thank you DR Ben for the lovely CD. I haven't gotten the change to listen to it yet but I promise I will. In fact, had I thought, I could have been listening to it as I type this. I will bring it with me tomorrow.
-
The conference was enjoyable. All Human Resource stuff. I had to listen to a lot of speakers on different topics, some more interesting then others.
I won a couple of prizes but what I really liked was the case they gave out to everyone who attended. It would make a nice carry on for a plane trip with tons of room fpr the computer and other stuff. :)
-
I very lightly skimmed some of the posts I missed. I caught someone asking about ForTran--what did it mean. Thats Formula Translation.
At one time in my life I took some computer programing and was told I am quite good at it. I wish I had stuck with it. Oh, well.
-
Drat--we're almost to my bus stop so I have to go. School starts at the end of the week so traffic will start to back up giving me more time here. Ever hear of anyone who enjoyed a slow interstate? I might be a first! :)
Have a wonderful day all!

Good Morning!
Continued Vibes to DR elmore and his family.

Well... The temp in Central Park just hit 80 on it's way on up to 100... And the National Weather Service just extended the High Heat Warning through Thursday... Of course, I'm supposed to head down to DC Wednesday night, and I was hoping to drive... But I'm not too keen on driving my car in all that heat, so... We'll see... :-\
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
Holden Caulfied ("The Catcher In The Rye") - It's just such a cool name.
-I'm sure others will come to me throughout the day.
-
Well, time for me to get ready to head out to run my errands for the day.
Laters...
-
Sending vibes for DR ELMORE....which don't have to go as far east as usual.
Good news about the kitties, DR CILLA LIZ.
MR BK - it sounds like yesterday was full of wonderful moments!
-
Very hot here, too.
Congrats on the Sara Shane interview, DR MBARNUM! That is a great photo! Most HHW'ers will probably remember her as the young girl Rock Hudson has in the speedboat with him in MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION.
And she was a friend of Miss Allison Hayes.
-
Clark Kent is one of my favorite fictional names.
I also like Judith Traherne.
Of course Miss Ayn Rand came up with my favorites:
Dagny Taggart and Dominique Francon.
Howard Roark and Francisco D'Anconia and Hank Reardon.
And John Galt.

Tuesday morning greetings! I'm so excited to have won the Unseemly Trivia Contest this week! Beginner's Luck, I'm sure.
TOD - Just last night at the dinner table, we had quite a lengthy conversation about the name, Ichabod Crane.
-
Schadenfreude may not be very nice but in the case of Mr. Mel Gibson, it sures feels good ;D
-
Good morning!
Just after 10 a.m. and the temperature is climbing steadily to a high of 98 today. And no rain in the forecast until Saturday.
Argh!
-
I really love the name Scarlett O'Hara. It fits the character so beautifully (and much better than Miss Mitchell's original name Pansy O'Hara would have).
I'd have to go with Atticus Finch for favorite male name, too.
-
I have last night's MEDIUM rerun to watch at some point today, but I don't know if I'll get to PROOF today or wait awhile. I saw the play on stage not too long ago, and the memory of it is still fresh. I may find something else to watch.
-
A reminder for those who get TCM that Robert Osborne's interview with Angela Lansbury is tonight. Looking forward to that very much though I'm guessing it'll trod over much of the same territory that other interviews and the A&E Biography show on her did. Still, it'll be nice to have an up-to-date interview.
-
Hope your flight and subsequent family involvements will go smoothly, DR Elmore.
-
There was no reaction to the news that we're getting the remaining Johnny Weismeuller TARZAN movies on DVD this year. I know the RKO features were much more low budget than the MGM ventures, but in an odd way, I kind of prefer them. I haven't seen them in awhile, so maybe my memory of them is tainted by time, but I really liked them the best when I was seeing them on TV as a kid. Never saw any of those at the movies.

I'm enjoying Scott Berg's book on Katharine Hepburn. In his research for his biography of Samuel Goldwyn, he also came into contact with folks like Irene Selznick who also figure into the Kate Hepburn story. It's really pretty fascinating seeing these people turn up in a story about Kate.
-
Good Morning! -Once again...
Well, my morning errand has been delayed until this afternoon... and possibly until tomorrow morning... So, for now...
-
...And my initial guesses/answers for the Unseemly Trivia Question - which I thought were pretty on track - in no way resembled the real answers.
;)

Going back to my book now and then I'll start thinking about what I'm going to have for lunch.

And I don't know what's up with the mail delivery.
My Shirley Temple boxed set (with CAPTAIN JANUARY and others) shipped last Friday, and I expected it yesterday. Not only did it not come yesterday, it didn't come today either!

Those Tarzans will be nice MattH, but it is the Gordon Scott Tarzan films that will bring much joy to my life ;D as they are my favorites!
In fact I will likely be ordering some grey market DVDs of them today (Shhhhhhhhh, don't tell).

Hiya, Kidz!
Well, what an adventure I have had! I flew to San Antonio last Thursday, after much delay and changing of gates and planes, and arrived well after midnight. Then, very early Friday morning hied me to the 911 Auto Shop - a bunch of goniffs - who, nevertheless HAD repaired the motorhome to the extent that I could get in it and drive it off the lot.
Said vehicle gets a whopping 8 miles to the gallon - or a quarter of a tank an hour. I made it to El Paso by 9:30, and slept quick in a Motel 6. Saturday the slipshod nature of the repair work became all too obvious when I heard a sharp BANG and the dials all went to RED, as I was 40 miles East of Phoenix. During the four hours I waited for the tow truck, I gazed in rapt bliss at the surrounding countryside, watched birds, collected and discarded many treasures at the side of the road. I found cleaning products under the sink in the motorhome, and cleaned the passenger side door. I watched a glorious sunset, watched the moon appear, watched stars materialize in a black sky. I wished on stars and talked to my mother.
The $250 towing bill somehow evaporated, once the driver got me to a seven-day-a-week repair shop, less than twenty minutes from my mother's cousin's house. I don't know what happened, but somehow, his dispatcher said it was all covered by AAA - which I know to be false - but I wasn't going to argue!
My cuz came and picked me up, and I spent the night at her beautiful house in Scottsdale. In the morning another cousin came over, and I read Tarot for both of them. Then back to the shop, to find out that a "new" belt and "new" hose had both quit; and that there were several items loose and banging around under the hood. Belt and hose replaced and loose stuff bolted down, I got on the road again at 3:30 - sucker ran MUCH better - and got to Simi Valley at 11:30.
I had a great time - and would do it again! I am a person who craves adventures, and this satisfied my appetite, I tell ya!

And John Galt.

OKAY. I GIVE UP!
Just HOW do you insert a photo in your message?
Enquiring minds (moi) want to know!!!
Aargh!
Donna
-
In you message is easy. Don't use the quick reply - use "reply" at the end of any message. When you get that form there will be an "add image" toward the bottom with a "browse" button. Click on "browse" find the image on you computer and click on it - it will automatically appear in the box and then just click the reply button.
If it's to put your photo next to your name, to to edit profile at the top or bottom of any page.
-
Had a nice jog (it's still cool out), now must run to rehearsal with Kevin - it got moved from two to eleven. So, I'll have to do my errands afterwards, and then I shall return.

Congratulations to DR Ginny on her Unseemly Trivia Contest win!
-
George, our resident tech expert can explain better perhaps, but I'll give it a try.
First of all, the picture should be on the hard drive on your computer, that makes it much easier. Figure out where the picture is (it can be anywhere on the hard drive, in My Documents, on the Desktop, etc.) because you need to know when you go to insert the picture.
Click the "reply" button at the top or bottom of the screen and you get to the Post Reply area with the Subject Line, Message Icon, Add YABBC tags, etc.
Near the bottom is:
Attach:
and there is a long field which ends with a grey box that says "Browse" Click on Browse and a new window will open. Remember where you have your picture, move to that area, find your picture and highlight it. Click Open and the "location" of the picture is inserted in the Attach field. Under the Attach field is more dialogue (Allowed file types: txt, jpg, gif
Maximum attachment size allowed: 200 KB)
At the bottom is Post Preview Reset Form. Don't click Preview or Reset Form. Just click Post (it may take a minute or two) and your post and photo should appear. One reason it may not appear is the size. If you're getting an error message about size then the photo has to be reduced. You need a photo editing program to do that. It tells you at the bottom of the screen that the maximum attachment size for a picture is 200 KB (or kilobytes). Anything bigger will generate an error message.
I hope this helps.
-
Oops, Donna is gone. I took too long to try and explain. She may read it when she returns.

Warning! Don't Inhale (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,206515,00.html)
On Tuesday, heat and humidity were expected to reach unsafe levels. New York City residents braced for blistering temperatures and officials warned that inhaling the city's heavy summer air could become dangerously difficult.
"It's going to be very difficult to breathe. The air is going to be very thick," said Nancy Figueroa, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Good Afternoon!
Yes, indeedy it's HOT!!!!![/b]
-
It wasn't too bad when I left the apartment around 1:30, but as I was walking around midtown taking care of my errands, I could palpably feel the heat and humidity rise. And by the time I boarded the A train back uptown at Columbus Circle... WHOA! However, I found the air to be bearable if not exactly comfortable.
Thankfully, years of living in Richmond without an A/C taught me how to dress during high heat and humidity - light, light-colored clothing. I was sort of amazed at some of the people walking around cursing the air... I would be cursing too if I had decided to put on a pair of heavy jeans, a t-shirt, a team jersey AND a team jacket - WHAT?!?!?! Yes, I know some people had to "dress up" today due to work, but there were too many others obviously choosing style/fad over comfort and sensibility.
*I also managed to miss the major heat-related delay on the trains that happened earlier. Whew!

I forgot to mention best friend John's critique of BOMBAY DREAMS. He loathed it. His exact words were, "My impression is contained within the title itself. Well, the first word of the title minus the last two letters."
-
I watched the MEDIUM rerun from last night. This one was an extension of a first season episode (which I just rewatched a few days ago) featuring an insane 19th century doctor whose spirit inhabited present-day doctors making them butcher female patients.
Now, the doctor's spirit was back seeking new victims. Quite an effective episode, one of the best of the season.
-
Next, I put in the DVD of SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY. I hadn't watched this marvelous film in many, many years (had the laserdisc). The DVD transfer is one of MGM's ridiculous 1.66:1 non-anamorphic efforts, but despite that, it was sharp, excellent color (by Deluxe) for a 1970s movie, and pretty much free of damage, too. Can't complain if this is all we're going to get for this title. I can easily and happily live with it.
-
I have a headache today.
Don't know why. Guess it's sinus-related, although I believe myself to be breathing freely.
Perhaps it's just something in the air....

Finished my afternoon viewing with another WILD WILD WEST episode, this time with an impossibly young looking Sam Wanamaker as guest villain. Entertaining episode about mind control, and we got some choice shots of Robert Conrad's bare upper torso, always worth the price of admission.

Since our esteemed BK daily gives us words, I have one he may find interesting:
CRAPAUDINE
It refers to a method of preparing a bird (chicken or duck, for example) for roasting. The backbone is removed with either scissors or knife, and then opened up and turned over. The breast is flattened by pressing hard on the breast bone. The result is a flattened bird, which is easier to roast than it would have been when left whole.
The English term is Spatchcock, but the French is, as nearly always, deliciously evocative, n'est pas?

Hello, all! I arrived safely in Ohio around 11:15 EDT, and I am now at my brother Randy's house. The dogs Max and Mattie are thrilled I am back. I spent the afternoon in the ICU with my dad, who looks frailer and older than I've ever seen him. The doctor says it isn't so, but Jo Ann and I both believe he's had a stroke: his words are slurred and it's quite hard to understand anything he's saying. I honestly don't know if we are now on deathwatch or he'll pull through this setback.
His doctor believes he's been playing too hard since he's been feeling better: too much playtime with friends during the day, from breakfasts with his cronies to bluegrass music in bars with his lady friend. The doctor believes my dad's lowered immune system has picked up some bug and he's trying to diagnose it and get my dad's health back in line. I hope this succeeds. He's on an IV saline solution for dehydration and, when I left, the nurses were giving him an antibiotic IV. I hope I have better news tomorrow.
I began reading Donna Tartt's THE SECRET HISTORY on the plane. anybody else read it? I always liked Restoration and 18th Century comedy names:
From RAPE UPON RAPE: Mrs Squeezum
Ramble
From THE RELAPSE: Hoyden Tunbelly
From THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL: Lady Sneerwell
Lady Teazle

Maybe it is just the dehydration & stress that is creating the stoke like symptoms. Continued vibes!

Jane, I will always honor your request.
elmore - is your father insane? Can anyone speak to him and tell him to SLOW DOWN. He was lucky enough to be feeling better after his last serious problem, and that is not the way to behave.
Back from many errands, lunch, and a nice rehearsal with Kevin. Fun to work on the act again.
-
elmore - is your father insane? Can anyone speak to him and tell him to SLOW DOWN. He was lucky enough to be feeling better after his last serious problem, and that is not the way to behave.
He's always been a strong person and he refuses to let any of is tie him down. I believe, if he comes through this round, he will finally listen to his doctor and take it much easier.
-
Elmore-at least you are reading an entertaining book, funny names.
DR Nursie, the names, alas, are not from THE SECRET HISTORY, which is a gothic novel set in a college like Bennington, which the author attended. The book could use a Mrs Squeezum, in my opinion.
-
LOL elmore-of course you said that...too much multitasking. ;D
-
In defense of elmore’s father, not that he should have done it, he just wanted to have fun after being sick for so long and over did it. I really can understand. It’s a bit like the last time I skied. After wrapping my knee around a tree I refused Keith’s offer to go down the hill by way of the ski lift. In my heart I knew this was going to be the last time I could ever ski.
One might say if I hadn’t taken the last run down the slopes I would still be skiing today. In that case I doubt it. In elmore’s father’s case taking care of himself was more important-he just didn’t grasp it.
So elmore, I’m sure he gets it now so please be gentle with him.
-
DR Elmore - I'm glad you made it safely back here to Ohio. These parents of ours can be pretty stubborn and independent, can't they?
-
It is obvious he just wanted to have fun, and no one can blame him for that. But reality is reality, and I hope that he will learn a lesson.
Meanwhile, my dear pal David Wechter is going through horrid health issues, dealing with some cancer and chemo and really reacting poorly to the chemo. Difficult times for him so let's send him some excellent vibes and xylophones.

Health Vibes to Bk's friend David and DR Elmore's father

I'm really looking forward to this weekend. In addition to my friend, Steve, who's coming for his class reunion and staying with me at my parents' house, my sister, bro-in-law and one of my nephews will be with my parents at the lake 15 miles away. My nephew, Jon, and I have always really hit it off. He's 23 and a little lost, he's in college and does all the graphics for a local tv station, but he just doesn't know what he wants to be. I think he likes hanging with me because I tell him I'm still not sure what I want to be either, I'm just being a lawyer while I try to figure it out.

You're welcome, DR TCB. I had mentioned that I'd be sending something, then forgot (talk about senile!). The photos were taken by a retired coworker, who had taken his dad to that cemetery to visit ancestors' graves. When I saw that he had quadruple prints of the Annie Oakley sites, I convinced him that he could part with one set!

Yeah, I should go too, I have to read an entire trial transcript and start on a re-sentencing brief that's due tomorrow. I've written about 6 or 7 briefs in the past week and a half and have 2 more to go before my long weekend.

I helped to clean a filthy house for a person who "was unexpectedly called away."
You mean called away... by God?
-
:o ?

Funny, I have worn 6 or 7 briefs in the past week and a half, and will probably wear 2 more before my long weekend.

I had a shrimp and crab salad for luncheon - a bit too much dressing but not nearly as much as usual.
That's it, meal-wise, so I'm fine, as I had a nice brisk jog this morning. But I'm thinkin' I might have to have a piece of pie for dessert, oh, yes, I'm thinkin' I might have to have a piece of pie for dessert.

DR Cillaliz -- are you a public defender?
-
Oh, sorry! Ben & Jerry are calling my name. I need to go eat.
-
DR Nursie, the names, alas, are not from THE SECRET HISTORY, which is a gothic novel set in a college like Bennington, which the author attended. The book could use a Mrs Squeezum, in my opinion.
DR Elmore, I read THE SECRET HISTORY about ten years ago and I remember loving and hating it, reasons of which I can't go into until you finish the book.

MattH, what was it about BOMBAY DREAMS that your friend did not like?
He said the score was banal and the plot uninteresting.

Here's hoping all who are ailing will feel much better or at least begin on the road to recovery.

The Angela Lansbury interview was very interesting and if I'm not mistaken the longest one in the history of PRIVATE SCREENINGS. Usually they've been from 35-45 minutes. Angela's was almost the entire hour, and there were a few films mentioned that aren't usually mentioned when folks interview her. She was very candid and while she wouldn't say unkind things necessarily, you could tell from facial expression or inflection what she thought about certain people.

Thoroughly enjoyed the BONES rerun tonight. It was one of the more affecting episodes of the season involving a child slowly dying from a cancer she contracted from a bone graft. The show begins its second season at the end of this month (Fox shows start earlier than other networks due to Major League Baseball interrupting their fall schedule), and I can't wait for the new episodes.
-
RESCUE ME was excellent tonight as well as the gang at the firehouse seems to be splintering. SOme new characters introduced into the mix will also be fascinating to see. Alas, only 4 more episodes in its season.

I had a bowlful of Breyers' Vanilla Fudge Twirl. Very good!
Breyers is a strange local brand--some of its varieties are so natural, they are made of little more than cream and sugar. But others can be on the supermarket brand level with guar gum, cellulose gel and red dye #3 in the ingredients.

Heading down to bed now.
Good night!

You're right -- I DO deserve ice cream. But I am too tired to go get it.
-
DR Cillaliz -- are you a public defender?
I'm a Federal Defender. So, yes, but just for Federal Court.
I had a private practice for 10 years before I started doing this, I prosecuted for a very short time before that, I was a Maricopa County Public Defender for 5 years before that and worked for Judge Martone when he was an Az Superior Court Judge before that. I also just finished 6 years on the board of directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Thus endeth the short version my legal resume

I am very tired and have a long day tomorrow...so good night...

Oh cool, page 6....think I'll do a ballroom dance with an imaginary partner....we can sweep down and up the stairs, down the hall and ....

Good Evening!
Back from dinner... I finally gave the Lobster Roll at Joe Allen a try. Quite good, although I wish the "roll" was something more than just toast(ed bread). However, lots of good chunks of lobster and just enough mayonnaise and celery for texture. It was worth the splurge.

MattH, what was it about BOMBAY DREAMS that your friend did not like?
Well, having not seen the current touring version of the show... It was just not that good a show to begin with. And, unfortunately, a watered-down tour - even though it still has the fountain - is really not going to make it any better.
*I also know that when the show came to Broadway, the music arrangements got watered down, simplified. I'm not sure if that was done to make it more "American" or less-Bollywood-more-Broadway, but a lot of the color in the score was lost when it crossed the Atlantic.

As I was reading this, I was saying to myself, "Hmmm... That sounds like spatchcocking to me." And, lo and behold, a few sentences later...
:)
*My only question I have is - No anagram for CRAPAUDINE?
;)
-
DR elmore - Good to know you made it safe and sound to Ohio, and that you got to spend some time with your father already. Continued viBES to your father and you.
*Oh - I passed on your greetings to James tonight... He says HI right back at ya'.

Is Breyer's really a "local brand"? Is it known by another name west of the Rockies? ;)
In any case... I've also found it strange that for a brand that touts itself as "all natural", that it has a whole line of flavors that are definitely not all natural.
-And Breyer's Vanilla and Butter Almond are among my favorites.
:)

Did I mention that I had a jury summons in my mailbox when I came home tonight? And it is on a Tuesday, and on that Friday I MUST go out of town.
-
And thus endeth my mini-frenzy - a frenzette. I have a coaching in the morning, then a lunch meeting, then I have to pack for my trip down to DC tomorrow night. -Oh, and it's supposed to be hot again tomorrow.... :-\ So...
Goodnight.

This is a lame way to start off August, but the postings have been lovely so who gives a flying Wallenda. My tummy is a little sketchy right now - hoping it calms down. Have to jog early tomorrow and then a ten o'clock rehearsal with Miss Linda Purl.
