Title: GOODBYE JULY/HELLO AUGUST
Post by: bk on July 31, 2006, 12:10:03 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes bid adieu to July and bon jour to August, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they took Spanish in cow school and are thus trying to figure out what adieu and bon jour mean.

My favorite amusement park rides are mostly at Disneyland.  I don't really have any favorite rides from travelling fairs and places like that.  I loved Space Mountain, The Matterhorn, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the Haunted House and Pirates of the Caribbean.  I vaguely remember enjoying the Mission To the Moon (or was it Mars or did it change to Mars?).  Otherwise, I've never been on a rollercoaster that has gone upside down, so I have no idea if I'd like it or not.

My all-time favorite (and really only) arcade game was one that my friend Andrew and I played in high school.  It was a video game called Jungle Hunt.  They actually had it at a Shakey's Pizza Parlour (long gone, now) and we would play for hours...well, maybe not hours, but every time we'd go for pizza, we'd have to play.  And we both got fairly good at it, although Andrew was much better than I was.  Anyway, it was pretty simple.  Just jump over alligators and swing from vines and avoid other enemies and obstacles.  What was unusal (to me, now that I think about it) was that you travelled from right to left.  Most games that I have ever played, for the most part, have the action move from the left to the right.  I miss Jungle Hunt. ;)

You can get the Atari game cartridge on eBay, but I don't have an Atari system, and I'm not going to get a whole vintage home game system just for one game...probably. ::)

I like all the rides at Disneyland, though I have to go on them by myself because my family is afraid of them. We haven't been there in years.

Only DR Kerry will remember Legend City, a local amusement park that closed many many years ago.

I have never played an arcade game, that I can recall.

There is an amusement park on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk.  The grandlads love the place, of course.  I'd rather stay away.  Too much noise, too much crowding.

Good morning, all!  I am going to head into the office this morning and pack some work for an Ohio trip if my family feels I should head to Ohio.  I am hoping this setback is temporary, but I fear these constant and violent shifts in health cannot be good for an 85 year-old system.  Ther fact that he's begging to be readmitted to hospital disturbs me.

I've got work for Klea Blackhurst, a small bit of BABES IN TOYLAND remaining, and I hope that Tom Murray can send me from London some files on THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER piano-vocals to edit.

I realized that, since I won't know anything about my dad's status until later in the afternoon, that the flight tomorrow morning may be filled.  If so, I'll go on Wednesday.   I need to check flights now.

TOD:

Favorite ride has to be this thing that's called Music Express on Wonderland Pier in Ocean City, NJ.  It's a ring of cars that goes around a track with hills at incredible speeds, forwards then backwards.  It's not exactly Space Mountain, but I can appreciate it as a thrill that's not overly thrilling.

I also like water park slides, but only after I've gone down them a few times and get accustomed to the route (learning when to slow down and when to let myself speed through the chutes.)

TOD2:

My absolute favorite arcade game is Space Invaders, which I can play for hours.  I also like modern pinball machines, the kind that have the steel ramps and hidden doors and traps.  Classic Pac-Man is fun, too--I know the paths to use and can really run up the score on that one.

Good Morning, Ben!  Good Morning, All.

It's still July, and as much as I'm tired of the heat we've had and want the summer to be over, it is still only July. So no, Hello, August" yet.

One day closer to going to Hollywood USA to see Bruce and Jason and Laura and Sandra.  Yippee.

Arcade games are not realy my thing.  But rollercoasters and "thrill rides" can make me lose contol  (Just like hot dogs make Patty Lane lose contorl)

Off for breakfast-- toast or cereal?  Toast, I guess.  Hey, Bruce-- pancakes at DuPar's later this week, perhaps?

Good vibes to everyone's families.

I loved the roller coaster at P.O.P. and the skytram that took out over the pier ( I think-- all I really remember about it was that you got to be suspended over the ocean).

Magic Mountain has great coasters.  I've heard Knott's Berry Farm has great coasters too, but I haven't been to Knott's Berry Farm since it was, well, a berry farm.  There was a western town where you could pan for gold and what not and get the famous chicken dineer, but there really weren't rides to speak of.  And yet, I speak of them.

Having lunch with best friend John who went to the national tour of BOMBAY DREAMS last night (its last night here in Charlotte). I'll be interested to see what he thought of it.

My friend Gregg who I often travel to NYC with went to see it on Thursday night and was not especially impressed. He felt the same way about it as he did about AIDA which was adequate but not sensational. (BTW, he thought CAROLINE OR CHANGE was the best musical he had seen in NYC in the last decade if that gives you any basis for comparison.)

Monday morning greetings!  Came into work 30 minutes early to get ready for a group that's now 20 minutes late.

TOD - not a big fan of amusement park rides, but our family did have a great time at Disneyland 10 years ago and our fav was "Star Tours," which we rode twice.  When I was growing up in Detroit, the best part of a trip to Bob-Lo for me was the boat ride there and back.

As for arcade games, we have an old pinball machine in our basement that we inherited from the previous residents.

I am really tired this morning, but am here at work. The cats were extremely glad to see me last night.  Callie has a new purr.  It's like she's purring and singing at the same time.  It was really incredible to hear it.  She's been acting like she was mad at me, I knew it was an act, lol

Boo has been in her room and is going stir crazy. She was also purring, playing etc. I let her out and Callie chased her up the stairs and under the bed.  But there was no fight. Tonight we're going to try again. Maybe days of being home together but not being able to be together helped the situation a little

As for the Topic of the Day...

I go through phases will rollercoasters.  I will go a few years without riding any of them, and then a summer will come along where I find myself going to an amusement almost every weekend and riding to my heart's content - well, more like to my stomach's comfort.  ;)

The Hypersonic XLT (?) at Kings Dominion in Virginia is a great ride.  It's one of those deals where you go up a few hundred feet in a matter of seconds, and then come right back down in even less time.  However, The Volcano is my favorite ride at KD.  It's one of those suspended coasters.  Very cool.

And even though it has been plagued with problems in recent years, I do like Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyworld.

As for arcade games...  Strangely enough, I've never been able to master any of those joystick and button types.   For some reason, my hand-eye coordination only applies to music and not to video games.  But I always had fun attempting to play Space Invaders, Galaga, Asteroids, QBert, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Centipede, Dig-Doug, etc., etc., etc...

However, the thrill of watching those tickets come out of the Skee-Ball machine each time you score.... :)

Really love the rides at all of the various Disney parks. Space Mountain and Splash Mountain are loads of fun, the things like PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and THE HAUNTED MANSION are also so creative and beautifully done. Amazing imagination on every square inch of the place.

And, of course, my favorite thrill ride at Disney-MGM is Tower of Terror.

Watched three movies on DVD yesterday:

"Starship Troopers" -- in DTS Stereo.

"Lured" -- a curious little mystery directed by Hunt Stromberg starring Lucille Ball and George Sanders.  Boris Karloff gets top-billed, too, but he plays a mad fashion designer with homicidal tendencies.  A rather short interval, his segment, in the grand scheme of the movie.  It's interesting, worth seeing, but no lost classic.

"Windrunner" -- a genuinely wonderful story of a boy (Jason Wiles, in his teens) whose life gets disrupted time after time as his mother moves the family from state to state following the father, who gets moved from prison to prison.  The final stop before the father's release is Kanab, Utah, where the boy tries to fit into a school and its athletic program but is thwarted by the influence on the town/school of the prison's warden.  He meets, however, the ghost of Jim Thorpe -- and it's Thorpe who trains the boy to become a man.  Russell Means as Thorpe and Wiles as the boy turn in terrific performances.

When I went to the FC Cleveland office in November of 2003 I flew into and out of Dayton. Flights to Cleveland at that time were outrageously expensive so I flew to Dayton and hired a car service for the trip to Cleveland. Even with the car service it was still cheaper than flying into Cleveland. I flew AirTran.

Ambient temperature is a factor in computing the maximum allowable passenger loading: (http://avstop.com/AC/weightbalance/ch7.html)

The actual takeoff weight limit is calculated by the use of various performance charts, taking into account such factors as: Runway length, temperature, density altitude, runway slope, and wind conditions.

It was a regional jet. They were under weight restrictions because of the 100 degree heat.  That was the announced reason.  We were on standby for Frontier for awhile because they had weight restrictions due to heat as well.

When I lived in AZ there were a couple days that the temps were over 120 and they had to ground the planes because their weight/temp charts didn't go over 120.

There were a lot of times when I traveled from Phoenix to IA in the summer that they wouldn't put any luggage on the plane and then would fly it up on a night flight and deliver it the next day.  That was all heat related as well.

The Racer - the wooden coaster at Paramount's Kings Island is my favorite....although I also like The Beast with its turns and tunnels....but it has been so many years since I was there, they might not even exist anymore.

I have never played an arcade game in my life.

Hmmmmm.....is that Mr John(ny) Williams playing the piano and conducting the orchestra in the Tony Polar-nightclub sequence of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS?

Thank you all for the vibes!  I am now booked on the first flight to Dayton, OH, tomorrow morning.  I will be out of here around 7 AM, so keep those vibes coming!  The older I get, the more I fret about flying.

DR RonPulliam, I had meant to comment about your DVD frustration yesterday.  I feel the same.  I don't know if it's "too-many-DVDs-too-little-time"  panic or simple frustration over making a decision, but I am truly sympathetic.  It took me over a week of procrastination to get to JULIUS CAESAR yesterday, but only 45 minutes to tell myself I never wanted to see the play again.

I also missed THE OPPOSITE SEX on TCM yesterday (damn!).  The older I get, the harder it is to get my life together as well.

A nice afternoon of reading and video/TV watching. I began with ENTOURAGE. A good episode last night. Things looked grim for all of our "heroes" by the halfway point of their various stories, but by the end, at least a couple of them seemed to have turned around their misfortunes. Sure makes next week's episode a don't-miss one!

RENO 911! had its best episode of the season last night. Paul Rubens dropped by as the primary guest star, and several skits were really laugh-out-loud funny. We had the return of my favorite side character - roller-skating Teddy who refused to serve the police free tacos.

Boo was howling to get out, so out she is and Callie is out too.  So far no major battles and only a few chases (which is no biggie at all).   I think maybe 3 days and nights totally away from each other without me here may have been a good thing for their relationship

And the worst may be yet to come:

 NY Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/story/439243p-370084c.html)

Quote
Con Ed had one message for its customers yesterday: Conserve electricity.

"We're anticipating possible record usage Tuesday and Wednesday because we could see record heat, so we're urging people to get in a conservation mode now," Ohlert said. "Turn off any appliances you're not using."

Good Evening!

Harumph!

Well, when I called my friend who came into town last week (and leaves early tomorrow morning) decided that he was "exhausted" after running around the city this weekend, and headed back to his other friend's apartment to take a nap earlier this afternoon.  Of course, I had hoped to grab a late lunch/early dinner with him, but...  And then he was supposed to call me when he got back to the apartment just to check in to see what our possible options were for tonight.  His last night in town... During his first trip to NYC.  So...

Still no phone call, and I'm just a bit put off by the whole situation.  He's been e-mailing me and IMing ever since January when he found out he'd be coming to the city.  And now it looks like I won't get a chance to see him.

Harumph!

As far as next weekend. It will be Corn Days, but I'm actually going up because a friend I haven't seen in years is going to be there from Palm Springs to go to his class reunion.  My mother offered to let him stay in her house there if I stayed there too. So that's what I'm going to do. It will be fun, I haven't seen him in so long.   He was the kid in the neighborhood who organized neighborhood plays.  We did the Wizard of Oz in his driveway - he was the witch and even had a box rigged up so he could melt.  I was the tin man.

When the Zambezi Zinger had its problem, there was no side to walk down.  I think that's one of the reasons I like wooden rollercoasters. They have sides

Hi Cillaliz-fine thanks.  I've been busy looking up great names in literature to name our new dog.  There are very few female names we like.  So far our picks are Austin (as in Jane) and likes Mycroft.

We haven’t really come up with any good ones for a girl.

Bruce, how about making that the question for tomorrow?  Favorite literary names.

That's sad.  My sister and I loved The Banana Splits.  I've had the album of their TV soundtrack for years and bought a CD reissue of it a couple of years ago...although Jeffrey Brock didn't do the voice.  The IMDB listing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062543/) lists Paul Winchell as the voice.

I am glad I checked this post because I was going to say the same thing

Good Evening!

Well, due to an e-mail I just received, it looks like I will have to leave the A/C-cooled environs of my apartment tomorrow to take care of an errand.  Thankfully, it will be a most pleasant errand.  ;)  And I can take care of it early in the morning - well, at least around 9:30 - before the major heat and humidity sets in for the duration.

*I'm just glad that since our apartment is on the ground floor and between two taller buildings, it never really gets that hot in the apartment when there's no A/C running.  We usually just turn the window units on for a couple of minutes to put a chill in the air, and that lasts a good couple of hours.  And since we - all New Yorkers - are supposed to conserve electricity tomorrow - that's a good thing.

RIP Fleagle

One banana, two banana, three banana, four
Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more.
Over hill and highway the banana buggies go
Coming on to bring you the Banana Splits show

Making up a mess of fun
Making up a mess of fun
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra la la, la la la la, Tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la, Tra la la, la la la la

Four banana, three banana, two bananas, one
All bananas playing in the bright warm sun
Flipping like a pancake, popping like a cork,
Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork

Making up a mess of fun
Making up a mess of fun
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra la la, la la la la, Tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la, Tra la la, la la la la

Two Banana, four banana, one banana, three
Swinging like a bunch of monkeys hanging from a tree
Hey there everybody won't you come along and see
How much like Banana Splits everyone can be

Making up a mess of fun,
Making up a mess of fun
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra la la, la la la la, Tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la, Tra la la, la la la la

And did anyone else get Banana Splits Magazine?  -At least I think there was a Banana Splits magazine.  I used to think it was kind of racy.  Well, racy for 10-11 year olds.  ;)

-Or am I thinking of a different magazine?  I know it wasn't Highlights. ;)

Some  interesting sidelights and trivia

It was all too much for America's TV Guide who huffed: "This is a fine program for the one-and-under set, for two and older you might be better off with straight commercials".

Featured segments included The Three Musketeers, Arabian Knights, Micro Ventures, Adventures Of Gulliver, The New Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Danger Island (famous for the cry of "Oh oh Chongo", and because Richard Donner - director of Lethal Weapon - got his start on it!).

TRIVIA NOTE
Fleegle (a dog), Drooper (a lion), Bingo (a gorilla) and Snorky (an elephant) were all instantly recognisable characters. Unfortunately, anyone could wear those furry outfits - A painful truth soon discovered by Dan Owen, Terence Henry, Jeffrey Brock and jay Larrimore (the guys in the suits on the show). When the Splits staged their very own national US concert tour, local actors were hired to save fees and expenses.

I am curently transferring a couple of episodes of LAWMAN that my interviewee Jimmy Baird appeared in...the other guest star, in the first episode, is Skip Homeier...you know there is something about that guy...I just never realized how good looking he was!

And I am also realizing now why DR Jane had such a crush on Peter Brown...wowee! They sure like to show him walking away from the camera a LOT if you know what I mean (he wears very tight jeans).

Speaking of TARZAN, I just read today that Warners is releasing the next boxed set of Tarzan adventures - Johnny Weismeuller's 6 RKO features - on October 31st. I spent many years of my youth watching those Tarzan films on Sunday afternoon TV - Safari Theatre it was called.

When they ran out of Tarzans (including the Lex Barker and Gordon Scott ones), they started running Jungle Jim and then Bomba.

Tonight I had another unusual mix of viewing delights.

I began with Buster Keaton's 1923 OUR HOSPITALITY. Fun movie, maybe a bit longer than the material required, but the high points were high indeed.

I remember watching a Keaton documentary seeing how he did the waterfall stunt, but it's still amazing to see after all these years.

Next, I put in one of Disney's True-Life Adventures - the 1959 JUNGLE CAT which was always one of my favorites (though not as celebrated or award-winning as some of the earlier efforts). Got about 50 minutes in, so I'll have to finish it up tomorrow.

I really liked this moive....

Have you ever seen House made of DAwn?

FInished the evening with the CSI: MIAMI rerun in HD. The HD transmission was a bit problematic at the beginning tonight. Don't know if it was a network feed problem or a local transmission problem, but for the first three or four minutes, I had to switch to the standard definition band, and then the problem recurred about halfway through the show but thankfully it was during commercials and not during the program itself.
