Well, you've read the notes, you've pondered the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the imponderable cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: STEATOPYGIA!
Something I no longer have a problem with.
-
Oh for the days when we had our late-night denizens and we'd do the Bunny Hop and the Limbo.
-
Topic of the Day: my favorite (but not necessarily the best) James Bond movie is "For Your Eyes Only." I think it was the first that I ever saw in a theater...and I love the theme song. :)
-
I also like the David Niven version of "Casino Royale," although I haven't seen that in a long time.
-
Well, my New Year's Resolution was to try and get more sleep...but it hasn't happened as regularly as I would've hoped. ::)
But there's always tomorrow, so I'm off to bed.
Good night BK and guests. :)

I do tend to have that effect on people. :-\

Monday morning greetings! I'm up early tending to some paperwork and such before picking my mom up for her procedure at the dermatologist's office.

The concert sounds interesting, DR GINNY!
DRJOSE is back where he belongs....

I am glad MR BK found OSS 117 amusing and that he had had a chance to listen to the CD! It is so very rare that I can send him something that he hasn't seen or heard! LOL
Thanks also to DRMBARNUM who sent me the original Nippon recordings.
-
Spy movies......of course Mr Sean Connery as James Bond is still my favorite, especially -
Goldfinger
Thunderball
And the NEW James Bond Daniel Craig in the latest Casino Royale.
I like Jean Dujardin in OSS 117, of course.
Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman in NOTORIOUS.
Lots of others.....I think my favorite, though he is involved in espionage by accident - in FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT.

Good morning, all! It's the Monday morning blues, with too much to accomplish today. We'll see how far I get.
Last night I watched "Prayers for Bobby," which I wanted to like more than I did. Sigourney Weaver is quite wonderful, as is the rest of the cast, but the film left me wishing it had been maybe 30 minutes longer; it's essentially a family drama and I felt I was often at a family reunion having no idea who the hell anybody was. I also felt Ms Weaver's progression from idiocy to enlightenment could have been a bit more transitional. I'm also still wondering how it ended up on Lifetime, the All-Men-Are-Evil Channel: there wasn't a woman in peril of death, torture, rape, stalking, prostitution, embezzlement, or identity theft all evening.

Well, I'm off to start a book I'm pretty sure I first heard about here--THE RED LEATHER DIARY. I hope it's as good as what I've been hearing about it.
Are you sure you didn't hear about the book on Twitter?
And you can also check it out here: http://www.redleatherdiary.com
*It's actually very "cool" book, and a very good read. DRs Jane and Ginny et all may find the "premise" quite fascinating.
D'oh! Yep, it was on Twitter. And yes, I think a lot of people here might like this book. I'm enjoying it much, especially because of the early '30s New York City setting.
-
Off in the cold to do some Monday things.
-
I thought the proper way to address the imponderables was to tip your hat and say, "Hellloooooooo, Imponderables!"
-
I also recall singing at Christmas:

And the word of the day is: STEATOPYGIA!

Ah, 8th Floor. Thank You, Google!

In any case...
It's back to work for me for a few hours this morning. And tomorrow. And the day after that. And so on and so forth.
The perfect way to ease back into the swing of things, although, I think I've already swung. Or something like that.

Good morning!
Gray today and a 50% chance of rain. We'll see if it happens. It's fairly mild outisde, though. Nice for late January.
-
Thank you, DR der Brucer, for reminding it it was Brandon Mroz who did that wonderful program of jumps with supreme confidence. Not a bobble in sight in his program. Of course, he had very little to lose and no reason for great nerves. His first year in the senior nationals, he has nothing but time on his side. Jeremy Abbott's nerves were getting the best of him, but hopefully he'll have them more under control at the worlds in March.
Every skater ever interviewed about the subject has said that winning a national title is far more nerve-wracking than winning at worlds. I guess skating in front of your countrymen makes it more tension-filled. Of course, the worlds are in LA this year, so the skaters will STILL be skating in front of their countrymen.
-
On TV Tonight!™
ABC - THE BACHELOR (two hours), TRUE BEAUTY
NBC - SUPERSTARS OF DANCE, THE LAST TEMPLAR (conclusion)
FOX - HOUSE, '24'
TNT - THE CLOSER, TRUST ME (series premiere)
-
I'm really looking forward to THE CLOSER tonight. I guess I'm glad that they split last season up so we could have a few more episodes until the next season starts this summer, and it should give the new show TRUST ME a great lead-in audience. I'm really not interested in getting involved in another series right now, especially with HEROES coming back and MEDIUM's premiere just a week away.
-
So is this still season 4 of THE CLOSER?
-
As I mentioned last night, I'll be hunkering down with the second FRIDAY THE 13th this afternoon and evening (must make a run to the post office after I get in from lunch). There are a few bonus features on the disc. Not sure if there's a commentary or not (the first one had one), but there were a few listed bonus items on the press release.
-
CW seems to have mostly repeats this week so no Gossip Girl or One Tree Hill tonight.
I watched the SAGs last night.
-
So is this still season 4 of THE CLOSER?
Yes, Sanchez was taken away in a helicopter when the season was interrupted early last fall. We'll see the rest of that story tonight and Brenda's parents are also slated to be on the show tonight.
-
Well we have just started season 3 of the CLOSER here so i won't read the comments. Hopefully they will start showing Season 4 some time soon!
-
Are CASABLANCA and THE THIRD MAN considered to be spy movies?
If so, they get my vote.
As far as funny spy movies are concerned, I like TOP SECRET!
-
Didja all know that there's another THE AMAZING RACE (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race/) scheduled this season starting on Feb 15? It's about time they went back to twice a year with this show.

Spy movies I love:
THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD
All James Bond movies with Sean Connery
THE LADY VANISHES
NOTORIOUS
TORN CURTAIN
NORTH BY NORTHWEST

on TV - GET SMART (first two seasons, never equaled)

That is of course BK dinner party comrade and Frances Farmer co-star Norman Lloyd dangling from Ms. Liberty.

Thy are definitely on my list of favorite spy movies. Also FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT
-
Charlie Waggenheim, who played the assassin in FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT, was my very first publicity client.

And the word of the day is: STEATOPYGIA!

Not necessarily. Having travelled, and now living elsewhere, I can safely say that LA is not just another country, but often a different planet.

There were people out by the pool tanning the last two days. They obviously weren't natives as natives don't go out to the pool until the air temperature is at least 80 degrees. It couldn't have been more than 78 on Saturday; what were those fools thinking?!?!?!

I'm tempted. My grandnephew is turning one and I would love to see him. The fares are actually decent with the cheapest round trip at around $540. For that "great" fare I can fly through Portland or Seattle, non stop is more expensive & difficult to get.
I bet there are better deals between L.A. & the East Coast.

Dialog exchange in RELATIVE VALUES....
Don Lucas: (William Baldwin, American movie star) Well, yes I am due back in Hollywood on Monday to start a new musical. It's about a bum.
Lady Felicity Marshwood: (Julie Andrews, British Dame) Oh....that seems an unusual subject for a musical picture.
Peter Ingleton (Lady Marshwood's nephew, Colin Firth) The word doesn't have quite the same meaning in America that it does here.
Lady Felicity: Oh...I see.

DR Jane - Keep checking for airfares, but make sure you go through each airline's websites. As others have already mentioned, there are some great deals out there right now, with new specials coming up almost hourly.
I booked my ticket for Memphis last week. Northwest extended their winter fare sale, and I ended up with a better price than the ones that came up in December and at the beginning of this month. In fact, it cost me $50.00 more last year for the same itinerary.

Well, I'm off to start a book I'm pretty sure I first heard about here--THE RED LEATHER DIARY. I hope it's as good as what I've been hearing about it.
Are you sure you didn't hear about the book on Twitter?

D'oh! Yep, it was on Twitter. And yes, I think a lot of people here might like this book. I'm enjoying it much, especially because of the early '30s New York City setting.
I will have to check out both Twitter and the book.

And the word of the day is: STEATOPYGIA!
Something I no longer have a problem with.
And The Song Of The Day Is: TOO FAT POLKA
Odd, I'd have thought it would have been HALLELUJAH, I'M A BUM!
Or BABY GOT BACK.
for some reason that reminds me of a clip from youtube link that Edi put on the board some time ago of that song being done to a clip from Pirates of Penzance.

SNAKE:
(wood)
and...
Celebrities include:
Mendelssohn - Jacqueline Onassis - Picasso - Audrey Hepburn
The person born in the year of the snake often make their way to the top of success. Unlike the Dragon however, they are more restrained and refined. They are in no means, pushy, and have a knack for being at the right place at the right time. They make decisions quickly and firmly.
Intelligent and careful, snake-people make good research scientists, philosophers, detectives, or professors. They have a very analytical mind, yet seem to have an ability to "sense" a good thing when they see it.
They lean toward elegance and expensiveness. It is unlikely to find a snake person wearing bold colors and gaudy dress. In money matters, the Snake has good fortune, but is often considered "tight", except with close friends and loved ones.
The Snake and its complementary sign, the Dragon, form the "House of Mystery" in Chinese mythology. The Dragon is the gaudy magician, the Snake is the contemplative mystic. The snake is closely associated with plots and counter-plots, scandal and corruption. The expression "long snake" in Chinese means "intrigue". Unlike in America, the traditional Chinese believe it unlucky to kill a snake which enters the house because it could be the bearer of good fortune.

There were people out by the pool tanning the last two days. They obviously weren't natives as natives don't go out to the pool until the air temperature is at least 80 degrees. It couldn't have been more than 78 on Saturday; what were those fools thinking?!?!?!
Bring the warm!
An acquaintance of mine was in FL at Disney World and the guy looked at them oddly when they came to the rides in short sleeved shirts and he was wearing a parka.
Still my favorite memory is when I was on a trip to DC with other youth and it was April. DC was having a cold April and we proceeded to play game of Volleyball outside at the 4H center in Chevy Chase, MD. It was about 45 degrees out and we soundly defeated the southerners where wearing having winter gear. We were dressed in sweatpants and shorts. There was a gal from Mississippi who had on snow boots, a heavy parka, earmuffs and thick gloves. We shook our heads. THe gal from New Mexico thought it was nice out.

I'm up, I'm up. Last night, the weather person reported that we would have the rains back this morning making commutes horrible. Naturally, the sky is bright blue, no clouds and, wait for it, no rain.
Well, "LA" is more than just Studio City:
LATIMES (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2009/01/scattered-showe.html)
Scattered showers that cooled temperatures in Southern California over the weekend turned into pea-sized hail Sunday night and early this morning in foothill communities lining the San Gabriel Mountains.
About 11:30 p.m. Sunday, officials started receiving reports of the hail, which blanketed streets and accrued up to half an inch in some areas, said Stuart Seto of the National Weather Service. The hailstorm appears to have moved east, starting in Altadena and passing through Sierra Madre and Duarte, with the last reports coming about 12:40 this morning from Glendora.
Some lightning and brief, heavy downpours accompanied the light hail (hail isn’t considered severe until it reaches three-quarters of an inch, Seto said). Freezing levels had dropped to 4,000 feet, which helped make the hail.

Anybody watch The Last Templar?
Some really sloppy editing (quick scene jumps, no doubt to save time) and at least one egregious scripting error (We see Heroine, disguised as a Doctor, enter a hospital room, and after her exit, the killer enters and does his deed; when the detective recounts the security videos he says that a man entered first, followed by the disguised Doctor - which would have made the heroine the obvious murderer).
It's so hokey it's funny.
Men disguised as medieval knights come roaring out of Central Park and up the stairs into the Art Museum (decapitating a cop en route) to rob an exhibit; Miro Sorvino grabs a papal crosier, "borrows a cop's horse, and pursues the Knights back into the park - and unhorses one in a joust. Meanwhile, the police at the Museum have a discussion about the desirability of rejoining the slain cop's head with his body before moving him to the morgue. A key plot point - the horses must have been borrowed from a police stable, because only cop horses can climb steps).
Stay tuned - the finale is tonight (thank God TNT re-runs the Closer and ABCFam reruns Kyle XY or I'd miss 24)

Is that why you do not include THE BIG BANG THEORY and/or WORST WEEK on your Monday viewing?
Do you mean today or at all?
They're not on the list today because they're reruns, and unless a rerun is of something notable, I usually don't include it in my daily listings.
I dropped HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER last year. It just didn't live up to its second season which I thought was far better than the first year. BIG BANG THEORY I can only take in small doses, maybe a couple of episodes a year.

Favorite Bonds:
You Only Live Twice
The Spy Who Loved Me
Licence to Kill
Goldeneye
Casino Royale (the Craig list version)
(The World Is Not Enough comes close, but Danise Richards is so very wrong)
For me, Danise Richards ruins every SECOND of the movie she's in. If someone else had been cast who could act a brilliant scientist, it might have been my favorite Brosnan Bond film. Like you, I prefer GOLDENEYE of the four he did.

The temperature has steadily dropped throughout the day. When I went out to get my second UPS package of the day, it was FRIGID feeling outside. It was not all that cold at lunch and definitely not that cold when I got the newspaper this morning.

I spent most of the afternoon watching FRIDAY THE 13th - Part 2. Gag. Any freshness or uniqueness from the first film is thoroughly gone in the second one which is basically a copycat film with lazy writing and so formulaic in construction as to make one despair. More of the murders were shown close up in this one, and two adults get killed along with many in the camp.
One more to go, but it's several discs down in the stack.

Right, BIG BANG is a rerun tonight. WORST WEEK is not. Have you seen the show? We dropped MOTHER the year before. We caught a couple of them last year & were disappointed.
-
I also had time to watch two of the bonus features on the disc. One was a Q&A with Peter Bracke about his book CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES with some good information about how the second film came about and why it was such a slavish copy of the first instead of something different.
The second was a little documentary about a horror convention where several participants in the FRIDAY movies were attending as celebrity lures.
There's a 30 minute documentary on the character of Jason which I'll watch when I go back down. The trailer and one other bonus (part 2 of a little horror short that was on the first FIRDAY disc) are the remaining features I'll get to later.

Actually, I'm surprised it isn't new because CBS has RULES OF ENGAGEMENT waiting to come back to that spot, and I figured they'd go ahead and run out their order of WORST WEEK as soon as they could so they could get to RULES OF ENGAGMENT which garners much higher ratings than WORST WEEK ever has. I'd be very surprised if WORST WEEK gets renewed for a second season.

Somewhat dire news for fans of UGLY BETTY. Here's a story I just cut and pasted from VARIETY:
ABC is shuffling its comedy deck, adding a Thursday night laffer block to the mix.
Alphabet net will bow new comedy "In the Motherhood" on Thursdays at 8 p.m. starting March 26, pairing the half-hour with sophomore comedy "Samantha Who."
Net also plans to move "Scrubs" to Wednesdays at 8 p.m. starting March 18, and pair it with new laffer "Better off Ted."
The Thursday block will displace "Ugly Betty," which the net said will return after "Motherhood" and "Samantha" complete their runs.

Ah, but which Doctor? William Hartnell? David Troughton? Tom Baker? And did he/she have the Sonic Screwdriver? Try SW. They're always running deals. Sandy and I are going to Austin again the first week in march for about $438.00 round trip.
It helps that they fly to Austin. They do not stop in Medford.
Come on, Jane. It's only a 2 day drive.
::)
;D I wish I enjoyed driving.

I ran across menus for local drug store soda fountains and one from Farrell's circa 1970 when I went there a lot. A Coke went for $.15 and a banana split at Farrell's was expensive at a whole dollar!!!!!
Burgers were between $.60 and $.85. A side of Fries was $.50; an ice cream soda or Milk Shake was $.50 (A nickel extra for malt). Prices had gone up a lot since I was a little kid.
No wonder I don't know how to live in this world. ;) :-[ :P ::)

Too bad you can't fly out of Portland DR Jane...a flight from PDX to LA is just $93 each way...$100 each way to Burbank.
I should book my April flight now, I think.

???
-
I've written about seven and a half pages now, and will probably finish the eighth page before I leave. That's enough for today, I think. I have about five more pages in this chapter.
-
DR MattH i just read the news about UGLY BETTY going on hiatus in march.
I think ABC keeps making one disastrous decision after another!

You can discover your CHINESE animal by the year you were born here.
http://www.qi-journal.com/culture.asp?-token.SearchID=Astrology%20and%20Zodiac (http://www.qi-journal.com/culture.asp?-token.SearchID=Astrology%20and%20Zodiac)
I'm a horse (fire).
The Horse personality often varies radically. In Asia, it is believed that those born in the years of the Horse may be tyrants, revolutionaries, or thieves. On the other hand, they have great capacity to excel. Others are often in awe of them, worship them, but seldom really understand them.
Horses are good at handling money, but often lose interest in their goals. Chinese believe that horses are born to race or travel, therefore Horse people leave home at a young age, and remain restless throughout their life. They are impatient, yet quick-witted with a huge ego. They have a hard time belonging anywhere for long.
Horse people do well in groups and is never short on conversation. Social contact is important to the Horse and they often form close relationships with others and will give up anything for a good romance....
This is so NOT me...not one single bit...except for the last part...sort of:
The Horse represents desires and wishes they are usually associated with males. The ancients deemed the Year of the Horse to have masculine attributes. The hour of the Horse falls at high noon and the month of the Horse includes the Summer Solstice, which are both strong "yang" forces.
Well... ;)

I've just returned from a blood test. Scoring 0 would be good! I didn't do my homework or study so I hope that helped. Another 9 days before I see my surgeon for the last cancer cell count. Would I worry? YOU BET.
I will probably have a tooth pulled out on Thursday - cheaper than a root canal!
It's a great week.
We are expecting four days in a row of 40 degrees C here. If it happens it will be the hottest week in Melbourne since 1903. (I don't remember that one that well)
-
I found a Kindle compatible light & watched the drop test video. At the rate I drop my cell phone it was good to see this doesn’t break easily. I have become fascinated with this. DR DAW I wish you lived closer so I could experience reading on it.
I’m wondering how many of the books on my wish list can be downloaded. I’ve been searching for a list of books available with Kindle & so far have not found one.

Once you buy a book for Kindle, can you later trasfer that file to a CD or your computer?
No, I don't think so. But I wouldn't want to read a novel off a computer screen, anyway.
-
DR George is correct; the Kindle is really for text, not pictures or illustrations. The daily NY Times does include some photos.

DR Tomovoz, HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY, or what is left of it.

DH Richard seemed quite enthralled when he was visiting NYC last year!!
You are quite right to check out the list of available books. Their inventory is much more vast than any comparable product and growing, but still far short of all that is in print. You should also know that there are many more books available elsewhere on the net, not just on Amazon, that are compatible with the Kindle, including most of the classics. But you may not find, at present, many of the books that you might read for, say, your book club. So that's definitely a factor.

I don't want to read it off the computer screen. I just wanto have it in case I should ever want to read it again.
-
DAW I'm reading people find deals on books they download (very time consuming all this finding of reading material). What is the price range you usually pay for books?
I still haven't found a link to the book list. It would be interesting to compare my list to theirs. I do read a large variety of books so even finding half of those on my list would be good. I spend a lot of time in used book stores & sometimes it takes years before I find a book on my list.

Stop & Shop and Giant Food supermarkets are offering a free two-week course of antibiotics to anyone with a valid prescription from a doctor. This program, which continues through March 21, covers many of the most commonly prescribed generic antibiotics—including amoxicillin, penicillin and ciprofloxacin in varying doses—at all supermarkets with an in-store pharmacy. Both chains are managed by the same parent company.
Anyone live near these markets?

Kindle might be nice for some people, but I like books.
I like the feel of them, their texture, their heft. (Sorry, Jane, but yes, heft.) I like the smell of them, that subtle blend of paper and ink. I like turning pages.
One of the statements I keep running across online is that no one needs cookbooks any more, that you can find any recipe you want on the internet. This is clearly a statement repeated ad nauseum by people who do not like books, or reading for that matter. Cookbooks, and books in general, are more than collections of recipes - they collect knowledge about cultures, places, techniques, ideas.
Books are philosophical. Books encourage the imagination. Books spark the need to linger over one's thoughts.
Books are the enemy of repressive societies - how many oppressive regimes have included burning books as part of how they take power?
Hmmmm.... Kindle. Like kindling. Like a "Let's start burning the books" kind of kindling.
I won't be getting a Kindle any time soon.

And, yes, we've a great pharmacy in the store. Der B switched his prescriptions from Sam's Club to our pharmacy over a year ago, not just because the store is so much closer to home but also because he likes the staff.
-
DR S.W.W. I feel the same way about books that you do. There was a time when I groaned just to read a paperback instead of a hardcover. The simple fact is, it is very painful for me to hold a heavy book. Aside from my wrist problems I now have to read with my glasses off & the book up in my face. If I could read in bed with the lights on, sitting in a comfortable position, it wouldn't be so bad. That's ok, I'll take having Keith home any day over lights on at night. I had years & years of Keith not home & the lights on.

Not only are employees included, so are their families.
Last summer, Giant issued employee bonus cards, which basically function like the our regular bonus cards but also include a percentage off the bill at the register.
"Family" in this case includes anyone living under the same roof as an employee. This means der B gets a percentage ticked off from his pharm bills.
His daughter was not pleased to learn that she is not considered family. But then, she's never really treated me like family in return, so...

I can see how a Kindle would be very handy for someone who travels a lot and doesn't want to drag several books with them to read.
-
I thought about that. Usually I buy paperbacks & leave them along the way. The difficult part is guessing how many I need to take.
Keith was thinking the Kindle would be good at the gym while he is on the cross trainer. He decided to stick with his magazines, at least until they improve the Kindle.
-
For me, the Kindle doesn't replace books. I view it more as an adjunct/enhancement to my reading experience. More of a convenience, really. DR Druxy, new releases can be $9.99. On the other hand, I got the complete works of Jane Austen and Shakespeare for $2.99 apiece. And Amazon backs up your purchases so that you can always re-download them if you wish or need to.
-
A Kindle can hold about 200 books. You can store much more on a memory card, but they're locked to your Kindle - you can't trade memory cards with others.

Tomorrow I have to cancel my appointment to have the oil changed on my car. For the 2nd day in a row Sherlock picked up a tick. We want to give him a bath before putting Frontline on him. We usually don't need to use it in the winter.

Good Evening!
There were a lot of firetrucks in midtown earlier tonight. There was one fire in the garment district, a block or two north of Macy's. And it turns out the fire trucks I saw heading toward 54th Street, were heading to a fire where a friend was supposed to do a benefit concert tonight. :-\
I hope everyone stayed out of harm's way.

What is a usual summertime high there, Tomovoz?
February is usually our hottest month Laura. Most days are in the mid thirties with the occasional day at 40 /41. We usually only have a 37+ temperature for I'd say about 10 days in a normal summer. (ie 100 degrees F). All the other state capitals except Hobart would have more such days. Adelaide and Perth have had a very hot January this year.
-
Otherwise, I had a pretty good first day back in New York City after my "exile" to Virginia. Work, friends and food. :)
*And I heartily recommend the Pomegranate Frozen Yogurt from Red Mango. That's some truly tasty cold, creamy goodness!

For those who remember Leo Sayer!
He is now an Australian Citizen.
I wonder if that makes him feel like dancing?

Just wanted to add to the Kindle discussion: it is not totally text-only. I've purchased/uploaded a couple of books that included the original illustrations. Plus, I've browsed through a book on a friend's Kindle that included photographs. They are in monochrome and are not at high-resolution, but they are clearly visible.
Also, one of the lesser-known features is that it includes a web browser that can access the internet just about anywhere through its connection to the Sprint G3 network. It's not the easiest to use but it works in a pinch. I've been able to access this here site (though I've yet been able to post.) There is no monthly charge for the use of this internet service, either.
The battery take very little time to charge fully and lasts a good long time (though it helps to turn off the network connection when it's not in use.) The unit itself is very light--probably lighter than most paperback books. And the view screen is amazingly readable in just about any light. I've used it on the beach in full sunlight--the print appears extremely clear.
If I have one complaint, it's the extra "Next Page" button on the left hand side--it's located right where it would be the perfect place to hold my thumb and the button gets hit a lot unintentionally. They really need to get rid of it.
From what I've been reading, the next model will have a backlight, handle color, and will feature some kind of built-in e-mail reader, so at this point I guess I would wait for that one.
And finally, I love books--real books--too. I still love to go into book store and browse, I still love to hold and read books in my hand. But I only have space for so many and there's a lot of books that I want to read that I don't see the need to own physically. With the Kindle I can still indulge on picking up a book or two that I may not get around to reading right away and not have to worry about squeezing into my already tight library. This toy hasn't replaced books in my life at all. It's an extension of my reading life.
-

So, after hearing the annoying count down to digital for months and months they are going to delay it. Great. now we'll get to hear the countdown all over again. Months and months of it. good grief, if there is anyone on the planet that didn't know you'll need a digital converter, they don't watch enough TV to care
-
I had a busy night of viewing. First, I had to finish the bonus features on FRIDAY THE 13th Part 2.
I have to admit, the 30 minute fan convention roundtable discussion with four actors who played Jason in variosu films was pretty interesting. They had some fun stories to tell, and I thought of DR MBarnum because the third one of the guys (I believe he was Jason in FRIDAY VI) was a gorgeous man with a spectacular build.
-
Next I watched last Thursday's SMALLVILLE. Glad Lana Lang is leaving soon. (I think she had one more episode to go in her story arc). I don't like the character or the actress.
-
Page Eleven Dance!!!
-
Next I finished THE STARTER WIFE episode that I still had abouot 15-20 minutes on. I also set the DVR to catch the next two episodes this coming weekend on Universal-HD.
-
Next, I watched the Ernest Borgnine interview on TCM's Private Screenings. He had a few interesting stories to tell about his years in the business, but he had no dirt to dish really about anyone. Not even Ethel Merman who he said divorced him because she was jealous of his celebrity due to the popularity of McHALE'S NAVY at the time of their marriage.
-
Next, I watched the LOST recap show. Glad I saw it just to make sure of what I remembered about the history of the island and its inhabitants. Very good primer for anyone who's a fan of the show.
-
I continued with tonight's THE CLOSER, a delightful episode with a good mystery and a surprising murderer.
-
And I concluded my evening of entertainment with tonight's '24,' another riveting episode with some great (but smaller) action sequences.
-

There are still a lot of elderly out there who have no clue, they just don't understand it all and hopefully this extra time will give relatives or caregivers extra notice to assist those who are not as technologically savvy as we may be. And really, they are the ones who are going to be most affected by this change. I would think this delay would be a pretty minor inconvenience for most, and a complete non-issue for me.
-
In today's notes, our esteemed BK mentioned
...a show called Stormy Weather about Lena Horne, starring Miss Leslie Uggams.
All I can say is that this sounds like going from the sublime to the ridiculous.
But Leslie's incomparable rendering of Stormy Weather's lyric is not to be missed:
Don't know why
There's no friml zigger shy
Blorm together
Snits memento fly a pimento
It's June! June! June!
LOL!
-
Thank you for the DeeVeeDee, George! Greg didn't get to watch because he was taking care of his mom, so he also sends his thanks!

Back from a lovelier than lovely dinner with our very own Mr. Brent Barrett, and am happy to announce that we'll be going into the studio come summer to record a Christmas album.

I understand your argument, but really, they've had a long, long time already to take care of this. It's hardly been kept a secret. It's been in the works for several years. And those converter boxes are available in just about every drug store in my area. You don't even have to go to an electronics store to get them.

And, yes, I am a Monkey (Earth).
And after reading the description of a "Monkey", well... Seems pretty dead on for/to me.

For many who are in their 80s and 90s none of that sort of things makes any sense DR Matth. My mom lives in an old age place and many of those little old ladies and gents haven't a clue. They watch their episodes of MASH or PERRY MASON and when technology rears it's ugly head it goes in one ear and out the other.

Good news for both Ginny's mom and Edi.
Yes. :)
DR Edi, will you be napping some more? I always do. You didn't need any biopsies? That's great!
No more napping; we walked to dinner and back, 4 miles. I had Wolfgang Puck's pumpkin ravioli, which I have been foregoing, but I figured since I didn't really eat anything yesterday...
No biopsies!

I am a sheep, but what else is new...

I think we have a Giant Food here, but it used to be a Food Giant so I'm not sure if they just swapped the words or it's really part of a chain.
-
Yeah, DR edisaurus! No biopsies! :)
-
Well... I'm already a bit too tired to remember if and what else I wanted to respond to, so...
Goodnight.

Goodnight, DR Jose!

That may be, but why will a 4 month delay help when three years of notice did no good. If the care-givers weren't there to help these past years, why do we suppose they will suddenly appear with a few month delay?

Great news. Edi!

I've had a long day of getting various things done and am now home and ready to climb into bed and read for a short while. I'll have to catch up on posts tomorrow. Hope everyone is doing well. Vibes to those who need them.
Sweet dreams!

I enjoyed TRUST ME, even if I did have to fast-forward through those increaingly annoying TNT trailers.

OH....
Did anyone catch the reviews for the Broadway revival Hedda Gabler with Mary-Louise Parker in the title role? Well... It seems that everyone gave it a "non-rave". Brantley's review in The New York Times more or less reflects the tone of every other review.
Hedda’s Terrible, Horrible, No-Good Very Bad Day (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2009/01/26/theater/reviews/26bran.html?partner=permalink&exprod=permalink)
...And — oh, break, break my heart — the director of this “Hedda” is Ian Rickson, who this season delivered a nigh-perfect “Seagull” on Broadway, one of the best revivals I have ever, ever seen.
That he is now responsible for one of the worst revivals I have ever, ever seen has me flummoxed. Mr. Rickson’s “Seagull” was a fluidly integrated production in which everyone seemed to exist in the same moment and in the same universe. With this “Hedda” it’s not just that everyone is bad. It’s that they’re all bad in their own, different ways. At times you feel that because of some confusing detours in the back alleys of Broadway, actors who were meant to be in — I dunno, anything from “Grease” to “Equus” — showed up at the wrong place....

Evidently, I picked the wrong thing to be compassionate about. Pardon.

You know I still can't figure out why this show never took off?
And Jeff Altman is so cute.

Interesting - I make a lovely announcement here before anywhere else and no one bothers to comment on it?

A sad world if you need to apologise for compassion Michael.
The world changes way too rapidly - because the technology is there - we don't need it.
It's often much easier to accept the status quo where we are comfortable.
No-one has convinced me to even think about blue ray, ipods, MP3 players etc. I don't need them in my life.
People need to be given a real reason to accept change. Seeing a clearer TV image is probably not that important for many. It is also about priorities often - and that can mean $ priorities.
I think your compassion is wonderful.

I wonder if anyone has ever considered a Christmas Album for Brett Barrett?
-
(I'd rather an album of Newley/Bricusse songs).
-
I don't mind technology, in fact I love it. I just thought it would be nice to have some compassion for the oldsters, and I couldn't understand why the delay in switching to digital would make a difference to anyone else. It doesn't to me. But your mileage may vary.
-
... why should it matter so much if they moved the deadline a bit in order for others to catch up. It seems like such a minor inconvenience, or rather for most people, no inconvenience at all.
That "minor inconvenience" means a delay in the government reaping the 10 Billion dollars they'll get for the sale of the freed up frequencies. It also means a delay in providing these needed frequencies to wireless companies to expand networks to service our schools and to our first responders to provide needed improvements to emergency communications. So for those who care about the big picture, it is a major obstacle to progress. I don't mind the government appropriating the added funds to ensure everyone can get a converter box coupon, but other than that, there is no evidence that a delay will help any senior citizen.

I wonder if Kyra knows how much she was upstaged by Kitty throughtout the closing minutes of tonight's opening scene?
