I shall now be on my way to do some errands and then sup with Brent Barrett, after which I shall return.

Jane, did you look at this:

http://thekindle.wordpress.com/2008/01/19/free-books-for-the-amazon-kindle/

I'll save this site.  So far it only gave me a headache & I didn't find anything.  I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.  It also demonstrates a difficulty I might find if I get the Kindler, doing the search for books is going to bother my eyes.

DR Matt missed one, in his daily television listings:

Stop & Shop and Giant Food supermarkets are offering a free two-week course of antibiotics to anyone with a valid prescription from a doctor. This program, which continues through March 21, covers many of the most commonly prescribed generic antibiotics—including amoxicillin, penicillin and ciprofloxacin in varying doses—at all supermarkets with an in-store pharmacy. Both chains are managed by the same parent company.

Anyone live near these markets?

Jane, I WORK FOR GIANT!

And, yes, we've a great pharmacy in the store.  Der B switched his prescriptions from Sam's Club to our pharmacy over a year ago, not just because the store is so much closer to home but also because he likes the staff.

I hope employees are not disqualified from the free offer.  If anyone I would think they would want their staff well & working.
Not only are employees included, so are their families.

Last summer, Giant issued employee bonus cards, which basically function like the our regular bonus cards but also include a percentage off the bill at the register.

"Family" in this case includes anyone living under the same roof as an employee.  This means der B gets a percentage ticked off from his pharm bills.

His daughter was not pleased to learn that she is not considered family.  But then, she's never really treated me like family in return, so...

I've just returned from a blood test.  Scoring 0 would be good!  I didn't do my homework or study so I hope that helped.  Another 9 days before I see my surgeon for the last cancer cell count.  Would I worry?  YOU BET.

I will probably have a tooth pulled out on Thursday - cheaper than a root canal!

It's a great week.

We are expecting four days in a row of 40 degrees C here.  If it happens it will be the hottest week in Melbourne since 1903. (I don't remember that one that well)

~~~More Vibes for DR Tomovoz!!~~~
Kindle might be nice for some people, but I like books.
I like the feel of them, their texture, their heft.  (Sorry, Jane, but yes, heft.)  I like the smell of them, that subtle blend of paper and ink.  I like turning pages.
One of the statements I keep running across online is that no one needs cookbooks any more, that you can find any recipe you want on the internet.  This is clearly a statement repeated ad nauseum by people who do not like books, or reading for that matter.  Cookbooks, and books in general, are more than collections of recipes - they collect knowledge about cultures, places, techniques, ideas.
Books are philosophical.  Books encourage the imagination.  Books spark the need to linger over one's thoughts.
Books are the enemy of repressive societies - how many oppressive regimes have included burning books as part of how they take power?
Hmmmm.... Kindle.  Like kindling.  Like a "Let's start burning the books" kind of kindling.
I won't be getting a Kindle any time soon.
(Bows kindly to his audience, and steps down from his soapbox)
And don't forget what's available at your local libraries...for FREE!! ;D
After my visit to the library I was able to remove 2 books from my LONG list. :)  Neither book is very thick or too heavy.
I can see how a Kindle would be very handy for someone who travels a lot and doesn't want to drag several books with them to read.
I thought about that.  Usually I buy paperbacks & leave them along the way.  The difficult part is guessing how many I need to take.
Keith was thinking the Kindle would be good at the gym while he is on the cross trainer.  He decided to stick with his magazines, at least until they improve the Kindle.
For me, the Kindle doesn't replace books.  I view it more as an adjunct/enhancement to my reading experience.  More of a convenience, really.  DR Druxy, new releases can be $9.99.  On the other hand, I got the complete works of Jane Austen and Shakespeare for $2.99 apiece.  And Amazon backs up your purchases so that you can always re-download them if you wish or need to.
A Kindle can hold about 200 books.  You can store much more on a memory card, but they're locked to your Kindle - you can't trade memory cards with others.
"Octuplets born 'screaming and kicking'"
Six boys and two girls weighing between 1.8 pounds and 3.4 pounds
Doctors estimated the delivery of the babies lasted five minutes.  No wonder it says doctors, not doctor.  I can’t imagine one doctor working fast enough to deliver so many babies in such a short amount of time.
Tomorrow I have to cancel my appointment to have the oil changed on my car.  For the 2nd day in a row Sherlock picked up a tick.  We want to give him a bath before putting Frontline on him.  We usually don't need to use it in the winter.
Good Evening!
There were a lot of firetrucks in midtown earlier tonight.  There was one fire in the garment district, a block or two north of Macy's.  And it turns out the fire trucks I saw heading toward 54th Street, were heading to a fire where a friend was supposed to do a benefit concert tonight. :-\
I hope everyone stayed out of harm's way.
February is usually our hottest month Laura.  Most days are in the mid thirties with the occasional day at 40 /41.    We usually only have a 37+ temperature  for I'd say about 10 days in a normal summer. (ie 100 degrees F).   All the other state capitals except Hobart would have more such days.  Adelaide and Perth have had a very hot January this year.
Otherwise, I had a pretty good first day back in New York City after my "exile" to Virginia.  Work, friends and food.  :)
*And I heartily recommend the Pomegranate Frozen Yogurt from Red Mango.  That's some truly tasty cold, creamy goodness!
