Good morning, all! A year ago today at this time, I was probably on a bus heading to LACC to finish the band parts for the opening of "The Brain From Planet X," cursing BK all the way for dragging me into it and praying to God that DRs Adrianna and PennyO would show up and help me finish. I recall that on our Dec 8 opening night I was spending the day in the green room putting cuts into the Curtain Calls and I was relying on the wonderful and beautiful DRs Adrianna and PennyO to help me assemble all the small band cues and to keep up my spirits with their intelligence, wit and charm. There's nothing like a good laugh to get over the hurdle. Yep, another mess I had been pulled into because it's hard to say no to BK.
And you know what? Every time I did say no (the CINDERELLA album, Liz Callaway's 70's recording for two nays), I wished later I'd said yes and been to the party. And what a great party my nine days in LA last year were! I miss it a lot, I miss "The Brain" enormously, and I'm sorry I'll miss the bash tonight. I send warm hugs and affection to everyone there.

We checked into our swanky, beautiful hotel in West Hollywood. It has a huge tv and DVD player, etc. It also has an amazing view of LA. And on top of the hotel there's a pool with a stunning 360 degree view of LA. It's really magical. And in a quiet neighborhood, to boot! (Well, they probaby will boot you if you park in the neighborhood.)
We are getting a special rate through KCET, and would never spend this much on a hotel otherwise, so we have decided to splurge and stay at this hotel another night, instead of going to our regular cheapo one.
We had a great dinner at Chan Dara with DF Susan and another friend and his cousin. Jacques is French and loves to debate, so it always makes for lively discussion. I just usually sit back and listen while everyone gets wound up. He is so loveable and big-hearted that even if you disagree with him, you end up liking him anyway.
Today we're taking the producer and cameraman to the airport, then brunch with Susan at the beach, and then a long walk on the boardwalk. I hope we'll have time to shower off all the ocean before the book signing.

The best birthday I can remember as an adult was a surprise party arranged by my then-partner Frank. I was in rehearsals for MAN OF LA MANCHA and the call that night for me was 7:30. Frank and I went out to eat at a local restaurant I had never been to but he said was fantastic. We walked in, and there was this HUGE table with half the cast of LA MANCHA and a dozen or so close friends from other shows, and I was totally blown away.
Turns out, I had been excused from rehearsal that night for this party, and I can't remember ever having a better time at a birthday party.

Dear BK, Happy Birthday! I don't know if you're 'up' on the RC Calender, but Dec 8th is, in addition to being your birthday, is also the Feast of the Immaculate Conception; Yesterdays CD was Vol 2 of PS Classics Sondheim Sings, today's Cd is Pet Clark's Christmas album, and last night's DVD was CONFETTI, a mockumentary about a wedding competion in UK, with Martin Freeman(of the OFFICE) Has anyone else seen CONFETTI? But lots of confettit to Bk for his B day, and many thanks for the wonderful cds I've benefitted from over the years.

We had an interesting, if somewhat smallish, audience last night for Cinderella (Miss Oregon was out and her understudy played the part, which might have had something to do with it). One of the grand old men of Portland theater (who has quite a few film/tv credits, you can look him up), Tobias Andersen, came and asked to meet me during intermission (he had forgotten we had met many years ago, LOL). He asked if I'd be interested in working with him on some kind of musical adaptation of a 17th century Italian farce, or something like that. He asked me what I'd been up to and since we had mentioned Susannah Mars, I told him about my Frances/Judy show. :) At which point, some guy who had been standing there said "Wow! Indianapolis in 1967?" And I asked him if he had grown up there--it turned out he had, remembered Frances (not well, having been born in 1960), but that his older brother remembered her very well and had gone on to be a successful screenwriter who had just moved back to Portland after years in L.A. It turns out his brother is Angelo Pizzo, who wrote Hoosiers and Rudy!

I'll have WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB and MONK from last night to watch. Those should get seen while I'm cooking and eating lunch.

I agree; it can be irritating now rather than funny. I guess I'm just in a habit with it. It still draws very high ratings so USA will stick with it as long as the star wants to do it. Monk and Disher have been written so broadly now that they don't resemble any living beings.

As for the Topic of the Day...
I think it was either my 16th or 17th birthday... Although, I'm leaning toward my 16th. In any case... I wanted to throw a nice birthday party for myself. Of course, I made the decision just a few days before my birthday, but I still managed to Letraset (remember Letraset?!?!?) an invitation. I copied it onto parchment paper. Then Letraset'd each person's name on each invitation. Addressed the envelopes in calligraphy - yes, I used to do calligraphy too, and I still have all my nibs somewhere as well. Then raced to the post office to get them in the mail ASAP. Well, imagine my surprise when people started RSVP'ing the next day! I didn't think the mail would work that fast!
On the day of my party a few days later, I started cooking various treats, and my parents ended up pitching in too. We ended up with quite the spread - flank steak, shrimp cocktail, make-your-own-pizzas, pancit, lumpia, etc., etc., etc. And a nice cake, of course - Carvel Ice Cream Cake with Extra Crunchies. And once my friends started arriving...
It really was a wonderful party. Besides being my birthday party, since my birthday is August 26, it was also a chance for a bunch of us to see each other before some of my friends were heading off to college the next week. And since some of those "seniors" were able to go to Georgetown for the night, some of them did. However, a couple of them came back after they had crossed over the Roosevelt Bridge to see if the party was still going on, and, sure enough it still was. I still remember a group of us pulling up the chairs to the dining room table, and basically having a second dinner around 1:00am.
And to make it even "cooler", a really good friend of mine who was not able to attend my party since he was working that night, dropped by the next morning to wish me a Happy Birthday and to drop off my gift - two records: Steve Reich's "Music For Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ", and George Crumb's "Makrokosmos, Vol. 1". And since we still had some leftovers, we were also able to have a nice brunch too.
-God, I haven't thought about that party in years until just now! That really was a wonderful birthday. And now I think I may have to make some phone calls today...

eBay trials and tribulations department: Why oh why do I get so many flakes bidding on my items? Some Nirvana-head won the Nirvana DVD I had up, then emails me back, "Sorry dude I just found out I'm getting it for Christmas." Sorry, dude, I'll still file a non-paying bidder complaint. ;)
I also took a chance and bid (and won) the complete Man from UNCLE set from someone with no feedback who it turns out has (and I mean this in the nicest way possible) a ratio of approximately 17 consonants for every 1 vowel in his name. I paid with a credit card, so if he turns out to be a scammer, at least I can get my money back.

Posted yesterdays Q by mistake. Best B-day I had was , at age 7, as a reward for being brave while they set my broken collerbone(as I recall I cried and screamed the whole time) I was given a whole dollar bill to spend entirely on comic books(this is when they were 10 cents).Other than Disney's BAMBI I don't remember what they were, but I was in hog heaven.

Jason, we had the “pleasure” of living in Michigan not once, but twice.
Actually there are some very nice areas & we were fortunate to live in them. There were also fantastic restaurants of great ethnic variety. Of all the places we have lived it was the easiest to make friends thanks to a fantastic newcomers club.

Even though I'm on vacation menial tasks must still be done. We didn't do laundry last night because we got back so late (4:30) from bag packing and we were too tired so I arose early to meet a friend at the Greenmarket to hand deliver his Hanukkah presents (he has been out of town since before Tuesday) and then we did the laundry.
Anthony is getting ready to go to dance class and I will walk with him to the studio. It's a nice December day in New York (not as cold as the last few days) so the walk will be nice. We will have a hearty tuna cassarole for dinner tonight (DR Ginny's famous recipe) and then perhaps we will watch a movie. PBS is in full fundraising mode so there is nothing "educationa" to watch. We will find some way to amuse our selves on this day of Bruce's birth!

DR Laura, we have a little ice out there and I’m ready to go South for the winter. When we first moved to the East Coast we loved the winters. I still remember the year Bryan made a snow bunny on Easter. The neighbors didn’t appreciate our excitement and said just wait a few years. It took more than a few years to dampen my pleasure over the winters. I think it was those last few years in Michigan that finally did me in.

And as for the Topic of the Day (Part Deux)...
My 30th Birthday was pretty darn nice too. Just myself and a few close friends. It was my first summer being back in Richmond full-time, and the "party" sort of came together at the last minute.
I also had a wonderful birthday when I was in Gold Coast (Surfer's Paradise), Australia. Not only did they bring me a big ole Vegemite Sandwich with Sparklers and American Flags in it, but they also brought out a great chocolate cake adorned with Fredo Frogs! -Oh, and the dinner and drinks (Oyster Shooters!) were amazing that night too.
And then there was the birthday party I more or less threw for myself two years ago - my first summer, full-time here in NYC. I had just gotten back from Williamstown that week, and just wanted to see everyone. So, I camped out a La Cocina for a few hours, and people came and went throughout the evening. Lots of margaritas were consumed, and it was great getting to spend time with friends old and new.
I have an idea for my 40th Birthday next summer, but, right now, it's just an idea. We shall see. :)

We have a woodpecker who has been attempting to get into our house for years. In SLC, a woodpecker *did* get into my parents' house and laid her eggs and hatched her hatchlings in the wall! We had to have the Audobon Society come and get them, and the Hogle Zoo sent a guy out to spray some sort of "woodpecker repellent" they had!

Jeanne-LOL, wild animals in the house isn't fun. We have had our share over the years. At least they have all been small. Last summer there were a number of bears roaming the streets of Ashland and a woman did have one walk into her house. The door had been left open for her dog. Fortunately no bodily harm was done & the woman found it an exciting adventure, I'm sure she never wants to repeat.

As for the Topic of the Day...
I think it was either my 16th or 17th birthday... Although, I'm leaning toward my 16th. In any case... I wanted to throw a nice birthday party for myself. Of course, I made the decision just a few days before my birthday, but I still managed to Letraset (remember Letraset?!?!?) an invitation. I copied it onto parchment paper. Then Letraset'd each person's name on each invitation. Addressed the envelopes in calligraphy - yes, I used to do calligraphy too, and I still have all my nibs somewhere as well.
Jose, I don't believe anyone has ever accused you of losing your nibs!

I was only able to read pages one and two and now I have to leave. I need to shower and get dressed, get an ice chest from my sister to bring drinks to the show (we're having a potluck lunch in between our two shows today), get some ice for the ice chest (since I'm bringing some egg nog and sparkling cider), then go to the theater!

Randy just called me with fantastic news. We sold Dad's RV and the certified checks for it and a trailer are now in his hands. When the checks clear in the estate account, I can pay my brothers the last bit of benefits on the death and consider thwe estate work essentially closed.
In the Christmas special of THE CLOSER, the whole RV situation made me laugh a lot, because Brenda's parents' ambitions to pend their retirement on the road was the very same as my dad's. God, I miss him.

Time to get to work.
I wasn't supposed to be working today, but the uncle of one of my co-workers passed away suddenly, so I'm taking her shift while she takes the day to pay her respects. Not my favorite reason to get extra work hours.
And yesterday, I was asked to put in an extra couple of hours wrangling the carts from the parking lot - the kid who was supposed to work the late shift never even bothered to call out. Nice to know I've still got the brawn for the job. ::)
Last night's rains have melted all the snow.

Other than the story and two of the characters, David and I didn't have much to do with The Faculty - Kevin Williamson virtually changed every line of dialogue and a lot of the particulars - but the idea and the lead character and the principal are basically what we wrote, save for their dialogue.

Today I am a Republican Department: we got our "kicker" check today. The Oregon constitution requires excess tax revenue to be refunded, pro rata, to citizens. We're celebrating the day at different parties.
Joy's off to a girls-only party, which I always imagine involves lingerie, somehow.
She wanted to bring a little gift for everybody there, so we wandered into a fancy card shop. "How about dreidels?" Joy asked, and it seemed like a fine idea to me. Wasn't going to cost an arm and a leg. But then she wanted to know how to play, and, having ended my education in all things Jewish with the pre-kindergarten at the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue some years ago, I had no idea.
Elsewhere in the store, I saw they had crackers, and suggested those. "Crackers?" Joy scoffed, "There's already plenty to eat." I then had to explain the tradition of the Christmas cracker, because, apparently, between the two of us, I'M the expert on such things. What DID those nuns teach Joy?
So, she called the hostess, who boasted that she was expecting 28 guests, which meant $50 worth of crackers. And she really wanted to know what's inside them.
And all of this reminded me to wish a happy birthday to the man who's the holiday cracker around here. He cracks a lot of jokes, and if you pull hard on both of his ends, who knows what might come out?

I got several things watched this afternoon. I began with last night's MONK.
DR Elmore was right; a very poor episode. So many plot holes in the scenario I was shouting at the screen through much of the show. Incredibly lame "mystery" as well which doubly disappointed me.
The only fun moment was when Monk went on TV to defend his actions and mentioned that there was no Santa Claus. Randy Disher's face just registered such a crushing disappointment that I did laugh, especially when his boss said, "You did already know that, didn't you?"

Today I am a Republican Department: we got our "kicker" check today. The Oregon constitution requires excess tax revenue to be refunded, pro rata, to citizens. I was expecting a couple hundred and was pleasantly surprised to see almost one thousand. I'm sure my commie pinko leanings will return unabated tomorrow.

I did get three review copies in the mail today: the standard DVDs of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2, LOST - Season 3, and DIRT - Season 1.
I started with HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 since I watched the Blu-ray version a few days ago. How disappointing that the Blu-ray presented the widescreen version of the TV-movie, but the sDVD has only the full frame (TV format) version. It looks much better in widescreen. Of course, the sDVD is also less sharp and the audio is more front oriented than the PCM 5.1 track on the Blu-ray was.

The book signing was fun - I think we had about twenty people there (very good for a book signing these days), and I read the first two chapters. Then we sort of just chatted for a while, then everyone had CAKE, then people had their books signed. We sold more book than we've ever sold, including a bunch of Kritzer books.

Today I am a Republican Department: we got our "kicker" check today. The Oregon constitution requires excess tax revenue to be refunded, pro rata, to citizens. I was expecting a couple hundred and was pleasantly surprised to see almost one thousand. I'm sure my commie pinko leanings will return unabated tomorrow.
I only got $388.00...but still, that is a almost 100 Bollywood movies that I can buy!

I received the latest batch of Varese Sarabande club releases - which includes a rerecording of Herrmann's North By Northwest, thankfully not recorded in the awful washy hall that the previous Herrmann and other rerecordings were done in in Scotland - this was done in a studio in Slovakia. Of what I've heard, some is very good, some is too dry acoustically making for a harsh sound, and some of the playing in the early fast cues is decidedly not up to snuff. But, I'm enjoying it - I do hope that someone puts out the original film tracks at some point. When Rhino put out the CD soundtrack many years ago, it was from inferior sources and sounds quite bad in many cues. They have since found pristine elements on the score (it's what's heard in that Scorsese short film) and they would sound amazing on CD.

Yes, Cil, Singdaw (AKA David) is looking for the Tuna Glop recipe. That's how Ginny refers to it. I was going to make tuna glop but was terribly disappointed to find that we had bugs in the box of elbow macaroni. I forgot to transfer it to a sealed plastic container on purchase and it had little bugs in the box when I opened it. I decided we didn't need the extra protein so we had sliced chicken and baked potatoes for dinner instead of tuna glop.

Tuna Glop
1 pkg Kraft Mac & Cheese (the tall, skinny box) prepared as directed.
Add 1 can cream of mushroom OR celery soup
Add 1 can of tuna, drained (or leftover chicken or ham or turkey - but you have to change the name of the dish!)
Add peas and/or mushrooms as desired.
Add a little more milk, if needed.
Pour in casserole dish and sprinkle with paprika.
Bake at 375 until bubbly hot.

There is a very interesting never before heard cue on this North By Northwest recording - Herrmann originally wrote music for the scene in which Grant waits on the road - just preceding the crop duster business. That entire scene, including the crop duster, has no music and has been justly praised for it. Hitch was right not to use it - the music is very low-key and Herrmannesque, but it wouldn't have helped the scene and probably would have somehow made it not as special or unique as it is.

I will NEVER get through all these pages of posts before the big birthday dinner, so I will say that the book signing was wonderful. It was in a really coll independent bookstore in Glendale.
The traffic was very congested, (I assumed everyone was coming to the bookstore) so we arrived a bit late, somewhere in the middle of chapter one.
The audience, which included our own Boo-key, Adriana and DR PennyO, were really enjoying the reading and laughing quite a bit.
bk stopped the reading at chapter 3 in order not to give away any of the mystery. The characters were very fun (and there's a kitty, yay!) and I'm looking forward to reading my autographed copy! I also bought one for my niece, who will love it, based on what I heard at the reading.
bk did a Q&A afterwards, and introduced 3 other authors in the audience, including PennyO.
A yummy chocolate mousse cake was served, and after visiting with Cason, Adriana and PennyO, we followed her to her car so I could pick up a copy of her book. I know Singdaw enjoyed it so much, so I was glad to be able to get a copy, autographed as well!
Now I'm back at my swanky hotel, having taken a shower as I promised bk I would, and getting ready to be at Ghengis Cohen at 7PM, and "not one minute later"!

We ended up supping at Spring Street Natural Cafe - which is also a favorite of DR Jason. After enjoying their delicious tomato bread/pound cake, we then both enjoyed their Chicken Burger served with Chipotle Mayo and their delicious homemade ketchup. YUM!
We would have had dessert there, but since we were in the neighborhood...

For dessert, we walked a two blocks east to Rice To Riches (http://ricetoriches.com/) for some Rice Pudding. This was the first time that Michael had been there, and, alas, after he tried his first sample, he now hates me <wink>. The look on his face as he tried that first sample of their Perfectly Legal Pecan Pie Rice Pudding was priceless - true contentment!
Besides that totally yummilicious Pecan Pie flavor, they also had a few other seasonal flavors: Gingerbread Joyride and I'll Take Eggnog for $200 Alex. ;)
I ended up getting an "Epic": 1/2 Eggnog, 1/2 Pecan Pie.
Michael got an Epic: 1/2 Coast To Coast Cheesecake, 1/2 Eggnog
Then we proceeded to zig-zag through the streets of SoHo in an effort to walk off some of the calories we had just consumed. :)

The Argentines, apparently, have a real fondness and affinity for gelato. In fact, one of the other major gelaterias in town, Il Laboratorio del Gelato, is also run by Argentines. In any case...
I got a cup with 1/2 Corn (yes, Corn!) and 1/2 Pumpkin. And after Michael sampled the Corn - "That's a joke, isn't it?" - he ended up getting a small cup of the Corn gelato too.

I finished watching HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 in the standard definition version. I continued to be amazed how the difference between the widescreen Blu-ray and the full frame sDVD was so telling in these releases. All that busy, athletic choreography got reduced in the full frame version. The widescreen made it seem like a real film with higher than usual production values for a made-for-TV feature. The full frame one looked strangely small and limited.

Next, I began the LOST - Season 3 box set. Even though it's going to be released on Blu-ray, I was sent the sDVD version. Looks nice for regular DVD set of transfers, but, of course, I would rather have gotten the Blu-ray version since LOST is one of the most vibrant and breathtaking-looking HD series currently being broadcast. Those Hawaiian locations really pop in HD.

Wow, I left at page 31 & we are now up to page 41. This on a Saturday night!
We met friends in town for dinner & then had a short walk around the plaza on this beautiful clear night.
I was reminded of the year Keith surprised me with a trip to Williamsburg for my birthday. Williamsburg is beautiful at Christmas, especially in the evenings. The lighting ceremony was on the evening of my birthday, how’s that for timing. We missed the moment the lights were turned on as it was the only time we could get reservations to eat at the Williamsburg Inn. Dinner was worth it. Afterwards we walked around the town going from one bonfire to the next. They were little fires to warm the people as it was extremely cold that weekend.

I had a piece of See's chocolate. For dinner I had edamame and crisy baked plantains, wine, salmon with strings beans & white rice. The dinner was loaded with flavor and very tasty. I even lost weight which I'm sure I put back on with tonights dinner.

The service was good with a lot of fun stories told and the church was filled to overflowing. it was bittersweet. nice to see people but why is it funerals that always bring out distant cousins you have not seen for ages?
It has been a challenging week. Picking a casket, help plan the funeral, write the obitc, etc. My father was buried in his Legion uniform he loved being a member.
I do worry about my mother though, I have to head back to Fargo tomorrow and she will be alone.

He taught gun safety and many of his past students even attended. It was amazing the number that came. The ones that had him, adored him.
One of my dad's freinds first wife passed away quite suddenly a few years ago. He said in his eulogy that he encourged his wife to lead my dad to Heaven but stand in front of him.... Needless to say taht caused a roar of laughter.

Just finished wrapping fourteen count-'em fourteen presents for a party tomorrow here at Tami's house. Mikey is 55, and the whole clan will assemble to bid a happy birthday to ol' mikey, and to pay some Hanukah gelt... should be fun.
Speaking of fun, I was over in Glendale this afternoon, and we all laughed and laughed for joy as the ever-humorous birthday boy himself read hilarious selections from the new book. It does sound marvelous, and all in attendance just hated it when BK stopped reading after only two chapters and a journal entry. Then Adriana and her mom served cake - I had two pieces.
AND THEN!!! I met the famous Edisaurus and Greg!! Oh, what fun that was! And I forgot to say that right before reading his excerpts, BK introduced the several other writers to the crowd. How classy is that? Extremely!
So, I finally signed on, and see wayyy too many pages to slog through. Maybe I'll just read a bit of this a bit of that. Anyway, what fun today has been.

And yes, BK laughed and then got very emotional at the beautiful DVD you all helped put together and which was beautifully edited by dear reader edisaurus. I was, frankly, overwhelmed - not merely whelmed mind you, but OVERwhelmed. Seeing that eleven minutes was amazingly amazing - what a jernt this is and what people you all are. I really think that there has never been and never will be again a site like this, or, more to the point, a discussion board like this. And to put voices with photos was so much fun. It was the perfect capper to the evening and I will treasure this DVD forever!

I got some wonderful presents, too - I didn't really expect any, but what I got was cherce. A really old and rare book from Joan Ryan and hubby (who's a rare book dealer), said book being from 1893 about California - gorgeous. Several wonderful gift cards (good shoppin' comin' up), the John Ford Box Set (huge thing), a signed photo of Lee Meriweather as Cat Woman with a hilarious inscription, thanks to Andy Taylor, who just worked with her, a lovely brass sculpture of a musical quartet, a framed picture of me as you young boy, and lots of other goodies. But that DVD - whew.

They were standing there in the cold selling their wares when "a guy" came running out of the store carrying some unpaid merchandise and ran past them nearly knockingthem over , he jumped in car and started to take off when a couple of employees came running out after him. The shoplifter (alleged) hit one of the employees with his car/or one of the employees leaped on his hood to try and stop him (we are not clear on this point however the employee did not sustain any serious injuries)
The girls wrote down the license plate number and were interviewed by the police as eyewitnesses.

That was one of the nicest birthday parties I've ever been to. Adriana was the perfect hostess, not only seeing that the food flowed freely (and there was tons of delicious food---I hope perhaps Adriana will list the dishes because I didn't get to see the "menu") but mingling and making everyone feel welcome.

I felt very fortunate to be able to watch the DVD with bk---I had fun putting it together and was lucky that Jeanne was able to find so many DR's to contribute photos. Singdaw and George were huge helps gathering all the photos together. We couldn't have done it without them.
My answering machine got quite a workout---it probably had more phone calls in a week than it had all year!

Regarding combat pumps - I understand that certain pumps are needed to keep the water levels at the reservoir at appropriate, well, levels.
