Title: SLOW DOWN
Post by: bk on July 07, 2005, 11:59:32 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you haven't rushed through the notes, you've slowed down and savored the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've slowed down to, so who the HELL knows when they'll get here?

CDs: A triple André Kostelanetz Cd I bought today for a whole $10.
DVD:  Last night's viewing was "The Love Letter" for which I did not care for much at all.
Mr Kostelanetz' orchestra is now playing "Try To Remember".
It's mid winter here and way too cold for Frappe.

I,too, am listening to "Wearing Someone Else's Clothes", the new cd by Jason Robert Brown. I heard him perform it live at a small club in New York last week, and I loved it. Just to watch him play the piano is an incredible experience. My favorites are "I Could Be In Love With Someone Like You" and "Getting Out". We chatted afterwards-he and his wife have bought a house in Silverlake and are expecting a baby girl.

Bruce, the Hollywood Bowl grounds usually open 2 hours prior to the performance.

You are so lucky. Everybody wants to be, I mean SEE, Sondheim!

I must sleep now. I stayed up so that I could call my friends in London before they went off to work for the day. I just needed to hear their voices. It boosted our spirits and made us feel somewhat better. So, good-night!

Good morning, all!  I've heard from most of my London friends by now, and I'm hoping the others are on holiday.  Strangely, I had no word from my friend Mr Raines last night so I'm still a bit worried about Charlotte.

Today's another DARLING OF THE DAY session:  I've got several songs as options, and I need to think about Funeral Music in the first act and an Entr'Acte as well.

BK, I agree with you about Sondheim; I'm fond of the man and a I love a lot of his music, but I'm tired of the cult and its insistance that even his second-rate shows are pieces of gold spun by Rumplestiltskin.  Other writers and better shows are getting lost in the shuffle, and I find that sad.  Anyway, have a good time tonight. I know they're playing one of my charts, so I'm curious as to what the other chart was they asked you to borrow.

TOD:
CD:  Demos from DARLING OF THE DAY, BROADWAY FIRST TAKE (1&2), Victor Herbert, SPAMALOT
DVD:  NIGHT IN VENICE (Danish telecast of Strauss operetta)

Good Morning Larry and Michael.

I'm listening to Elaine Page's weekly program on BBC 2 right now. My listening schedule was upended this week by the Monday holiday.

Don't have anything in the CD player or the VCR or the DVD player.

I must get the house ready for the return of my husband sometime on Monday. Then he goes back out to Long Island to return his car and on Wednesday next (the 13th) I head out to Long Island for rest and relaxation with Anthony.

Nothing in the DVD or VHS machines.

CD:  Julie Andrews sings Alan Jay Lerner.  I really like "Someone On Your Side"-- Does anyone know what it is from?

I'm also listening to parts of DRG's 25th Anniversary album.

I tried posting yesterday, but the server was too slow or something, and I couldn't get on.  It was most traumatic, :'(

Good morning Ben and larry and Michael nd Iris and whoever is else is here now.

DVD:  The Best of The Dudley DoRright Show.

VCR:  I taped the Live 8 broadcast on MTV last Saturday, but I understand that their coverage was so bad that I most probably won't save it (or view it, for that matter.)  I'll wait for the inevitable DVD release twenty years from now.

Well, Jerry Herman did have a gala at the Hollywood Bowl a few years ago that featured a lot of guest stars and was broadcast on cable and was later released to video. I certainly agree that John Kander has more than enough music to his credit to be given a sensational gala.

For those who are interested in that WIZARD OF OZ set coming out this fall, here's an article I'm reprinting from today's VARIETY. I can't just give a link because you have to subscribe to the service to read their articles:

Warner Home Video will release two new special editions of "The Wizard of Oz" on Oct. 25 that include the first new restoration and new bonus features in 12 years.
Restoration utilizes Warner's proprietary digital "Ultra-Resolution" technology process used on recent releases of titles such as last year's "Gone With the Wind."

New restoration has been created with high-def presentation in mind. "Wizard" will not be one of the first batch of high-def DVDs Warner releases this fall, when it plans to introduce the first releases on one of two incompatible high-def disc formats called HD DVD. But Warner Home Video senior VP classic catalog George Feltenstein said it will likely be among the first waves of movies released in high-def.

The score and soundtrack have also been enhanced and remastered for a new 5.1 channel stereo audio track, creating more separation from the two microphones used to record some of the music, in addition to the option of the original mono track.

Two versions of the DVD will be released with very different sleeve art for the two-disc special edition and the three-disc collector's edition.

Three-disc edition, with 13 hours of bonus features, including more than five hours of new extras, features a new documentary about creator L. Frank Baum and the entire 1925 silent feature film version of "The Wizard of Oz," starring Oliver Hardy as the Tin Man. Earlier pic has been restored from 35mm nitrate and features a new score recorded by Robert Israel.

Warners estimates that about 20 million copies of the movie have been sold collectively in the multiple VHS and Betamax editions, three laserdisc editions and two previous DVD editions since the initial VHS release in 1980 as one of MGM's first group of homevideo titles. That edition used an original theatrical release print. The studio reissued the movie on video in a 50th anniversary edition in 1989 using a transfer from a rare Technicolor print found in the basement of CBS.

In 1993 MGM released "The Ultimate Oz" set that featured the film transferred from a new interpositive from the original negative and hours of bonus features presented in their entirety on a laserdisc set. But that edition has registration problems with colors out of alignment, causing fuzziness and ghosting in some scenes.

That same film element was used for the edition that MGM released in 1997 for one of its first DVDs, which had none of the bonus features from "The Ultimate Oz," and again on the 1999 DVD release from Warner, which had then taken over the MGM library. That current release includes all of the bonus features from the 1993 laserdisc.

MBarnum: Skip "Connie and Carla" and go straight for "The Notebook," if for no other reason than for Ryan Gosling. I want to look like THAT! And it's one of those super-sentimental, over-the-top romances that makes you swoon. Or puke. I prefer to swoon, personally.

I'm mildly curious to hear Jason Robert's new CD. He invited me to come to hear one of his concerts this past week in NYC, but I didn't have the time.

My friend is co-producing the Sondheim shindig at the Hollywood Bowl. He offered to fly me out for it, but the airlines were blocking out all frequent flyer miles this week because of the holiday and I didn't have enough vacation days to take off. :(

Media Check:

DVD: The Golden Girls, Season 2, Disc 3
VCR: I have no idea...whatever my roommate was watching
CD Player (Home): "Immortal Beloved" Soundtrack, THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, ...SPELLING BEE, Tina Turner: The Best Disc 2

I saw the Notebook last week.  It really took me a while to get into it.  The second half is much better than the first. And the ending is so touching. Made me cry!

As for last night's Big Brother, this guy gives the best summaries: http://rapids.canoe.ca/cgi-bin/NewChat/NC-transcript.pl?CHAT_NAME=BigBrother6-01&WATCHER_ID=1687079&ACTION=TRANSCRIPT&LAST=999999 (http://rapids.canoe.ca/cgi-bin/NewChat/NC-transcript.pl?CHAT_NAME=BigBrother6-01&WATCHER_ID=1687079&ACTION=TRANSCRIPT&LAST=999999)

I liked it, and was even trying to figure out who the pairs were.  Does anybody else think rachel and howie (the last 2 on the surfboard) are a pair?

There was the HOH and nom ceremonies and the food challenge. So it was packed with stuff.  Only problem is i don't really know everybody yet. So that makes it a bit hard to follow.

I for one, was totally non-plussed.  (I was also non-subtracted.) It was a little bit fun trying to figure out who went with whom, but I imagine once they actually TELL us next week, it will help clarify things.  BTW (by the way, in internet lingo) I have a sneaking suspicion that those who they implied were the pairs last night won't be.

As for the eye-candy (male division):  Eh.  While many were handsome, their personalities tended to out weigh their pulchritude.

Oh for the days of Hardy (from whatever season he was on) and Josh/"Sloshie" (from season 1).

re: Big Brother 6

Would you believe I "forgot" it was airing until about 8:25 p.m.?

Oh, well.  From the previews, I see no one yet knows about the "secret room."

Jennifer:  I gave those two you mentioned careful consideration.  However, given that they were alone on the surfboard in the pool at the end of HOH, they were talking as if they were forming a pact...something a "couple" wouldn't have to do.

I think the fireman -- Eric, is it? -- is going to hang himself early.  For one thing, he can't shut up when he's rallying the guys, and for another, the guy who went  to Rachel to discuss who to nominate for eviction flat-out revealed to her that Eric had power with the guys.  That was either very stupid of him, or it was a very intentional "plant" to work on the ladies for future evictions.

I've formed no opinions about anyone (and how could I with only 35 minutes of exposure, including commercials???).

TOD:

Yesterday, whilst driving hither and yon around the DelMarVa peninsula, der Brucer and I listened to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Light in the Piazza.

Spelling Bee is fun.  Unfortunately, due to one song ("My Unfortunate Erection") we may not be able to play it for the grandlads at any time soon.  Or we might play it for them, but we'll have to tell them not to tell Mommy that we played it for them.   :-\ ::) ;D

Piazza is definately not for anyone who thinks Italian food is the red sauce stuff.  Some of the writing is very good, I think, and the Fabrizio has a very winning voice.  I enjoy it, to a degree, but so far I prefer Guettel's other works over this one.

I have mucho catching up to do.  I've been busy working, sure, but I'm also guilty of soldiering over at another board, deflating the bigots and encouringing others.   The attaboys I've been getting have far outweighed the outrage (from the bigots, who don't like being punctured).

We'll see about that.

Say, while I was out of town, it seems like some people disappeared. Elmore told me Pogue was in his Old Kentucky Home, but I haven't seen WFO posting. Vixmom has been a rarity, though she did explain.

Don't waste all your knowledge on other boards, SWoody!

If  you have a CD burner, you could make a copy of the Spelling Bee CD and just leave off the offending song, if you wouldn't feel like too much of a censor doing so.

DR Ron, if you think missing the beginning of Big Brother was bad, imagine my delight when my tape ran out of space on Wednesday night at 8:50pm (missing the last 10 minutes of Dancing with the stars).  It's actually sort of funny to watch the entire season and then miss the end!

Oh well i read about it online (and was very happy). And luckily my tape included their freedance and judges opinions (just missed the actual scores).

Good Afternoon!

...Well, once I got back to my dorm room last night... I sat down on the bed for a just a bit... and the next thing I knew it was 3:00am...  I guess yesterday really was a long day... So... I did not end up going to Griff's last night as originally "planned"...  Well, you've seen one "special interest place", you've seen them all...

;)

...And I think that's enough ellipsisses - ellipsi (?) - for now.

I've spent most of this morning walking in the rain.  I woke up around 8:00, and finally got out bed around 9:15.  I headed over to Julie's for breakfast.  A very good breakfast, and some wonderful hosts/owners - a very hospitable Greek couple.  After breakfast, I walked around umbrella in hand just checking out the various storefronts near campus.  Nothing major, but some kitschy stuff.  -I would have taken pics, but my rechargeable batteries in my digital camera finally bit the dust.  Ah, well.

Then once I returned to my dorm room, I organized some stuff, and checked my voice mail back home.

I had some good calls - more bookings for gigs - and I had a couple of call from my bank asking me to contact them as soon as possibe.  Uh-oh...

It turns out that my check card number was one of those numbers that was "stolen" a few weeks ago.  So, they closed my account LAST week, and have been trying to mail me notices regarding the change in status of my account.  But since I've been having my mail forwarded, and official bank mail cannot be forwarded...  Once their central office got my mail back, they called me personally.  Pretty good customer service.

Now, the truly weird thing - and lucky thing - is that I've been weaning myself away from that account since it's based in Richmond.  I've had no checks floating, no auto-payments in process, etc., in over the past two weeks, and I've been using my check card and checks for my new "New York" account.  Whew!  And once I head back to Richmond on Monday, I'll take care of any necessary paperwork in person.

Again - Whew!

BK - I still remember some of those trips over to the rehearsal studio last summer...  People line up early to get into the Hollywood Bowl.  I have a feeling you'll be dealing with some sort of traffic regardless.  However, they do offer a shuttle service from various lots, so that may be an option.

...And I think you're big "problem" will be leaving the Hollywood Bowl...  However, if there's some sort of backstage reception afterwards, then maybe most of the "public" traffic will have died down by then.

DR LAURA - I meant to ask you yesterday....what exactly does one do with 16 tons of rock?  And any photos of your office as it gets into shape?

One places the boulders around the landscaping just so, so as to make the raked gravel look natural.

Today we are raking the first delivery of 100 tons of gravel around the property. There are 600 tons more to go.

We have spent weeks removing all things natural from the land and hauling in tons of gravel and boulders and planting many non-native plants to make it look "natural."

There's nothing in my office except window blinds right now.

We'll see about that.

Say, while I was out of town, it seems like some people disappeared. Elmore told me Pogue was in his Old Kentucky Home, but I haven't seen WFO posting. Vixmom has been a rarity, though she did explain.

Note: I originally said TCB, but Mr. Orr is who I meant.

I have been very busy at work and getting ready for our vacation so I apologize for my E & T. behavior.  I spoke to WFO last night and the video card has gone on his computer, and since college is over for the summer he has no access to his work computer.  My Mr. conferred with WFO over video board replacements and will attempt to get  WFO's computer  up and running before we take off for Canada

REMINDER I shall be gone the 15 - 30th of July and computerless for that time period. :D

DRGinny, I was drunk.

DRJane, Charlotte is fine, I'm ecstatic to report.  Ron emailed me this morning the message from the director of the program.  Much relief in Manhattan today.  I'm still waiting to hear from my friend Charlie Harmon, who used to be Leonard Bernstein's assistant.  He's housesitting in London this summer after doing the music prep for the Royal Opera House premiere of Maazel's new opera 1984.  I heard from Robert Kimball today that he'd heard from several mutual friends who are also fine.

Charlie just emailed me from London:

Except that it was too rainy to take the dogs out to the heath in the morning, yesterday wasn't exceptional here in Hampstead. I had the TV on all day - hadn't planned on going anywhere, and tried to spend the time extracting parts for the Chris Rouse ballet I'm working on. Fat chance! Neighbors came by to make sure I was here - they were actually more concerned about the dogs. But the spooky thing was that I had gone into the city on a bus Wednesday night to have dinner with a Boosey & Hawkes colleague, and had gotten off the bus at Tavistock Square, right where the bus had blown up yesterday morning. Hard to imagine the blood and guts splattered on the building there.

So today I went in for a librarians' lunch at the Opera House - they are determined to go on with life as normal. It was a delightful social afternoon. The Opera House staff is salt of the earth.

Well, after much (MUCH) consternation, I ahve decided to attend the 30th anniversary "Celebration" of my former summer camp, Stagedoor Manor.

I realize that I will probably know nobody there, but I had been toying with the idea of driving down there to see a show this summer.  But this seems a better reason.

The "gala" is being held at Kutsher's, one of the last of the old time "borscht belt" hotels.  Ironically, the deciding factor for me to attend had little to do with camp, but with the fact that my friend Julie Budd is actually appearing, at Kutsher's, that same weekend.  So it was "bashert" as they say in the mountains of Catskill.  ("Meant to be/fate/kismet," for non-Yiddish speakers.)

I was listening to Follies recently (I think it was part of last Friday's media check) which, ironically -- and inexplicably -- was the final show of my first summer at Stagedoor.  So, this little visit in a couple of weeks will truly be "one last look where it all began."

I am looking forward to it. With trepadation.

Thanks Jane- I was going to ask if you had any advice for introducing two cats. Killbot is super-friendly and at the shelter we got her from, she befriended dogs and other cats very easily, but that has been three years ago now. Walty, the new cat, was a loner, then had to adjust to the introduction of a pug-like dog into his world. It took awhile, but Walty came around. How will the two do tomorrow put together? Stay tuned...

I have one piece of advice:

When giving Walty some exclusive time, do not (repeat NOT) do it in a chair or on any furniture that you give the same attention to Killbot upon.

Cat's get confused about things -- and right now you and Antonia belong to Killbot.  Either of you giving Walty exclusive attention on Killbot's turf sends a message to Walty that he might need to mark his territory.

And even spayed/neutered cats "mark" their territories...and as Li'l Abner Yokum might say, it ain't purty and it don't smell good, neither.

For a while -- until such time as the two cats are playing, grooming one another AND sharing food dishes -- do everything simultaneously...Killbot and Walty TOGETHER...and pay extra special attention to Killbot whenever possible so that he knows you still love him.

.  He plans to bring one cat home with him and I fear if he doesn’t find this puppy a home soon she will also be returning with him.  From Bucharest to the States is a long & expensive way to travel with pets.

I brought two cats home with me from Naples, Italy, in 1992.  It wasn't nearly as expensive as I feared.

Travel regulations have changed since then, of course.  There are certain times of the year that pets, in domestic travel, are not permitted to fly because of extreme temperatures.

Last time I traveled with Vickie, it cost $50 each way.  Far cheaper than leaving her at a veteranarian's office.  But Vickie, and my late cat Dickens, traveled very well.

I think they cost me less than $300 to fly from Italy to North Carolina, and that included the Italian certificates I had to obtain for them to fly.

Speaking of John Vernon and good movies. CHARLEY VARRICK was on last night on TCM. Has Joe Don Baker ever been as good in anything since? And I don't wanna hear from the EISCHEID cult.

His character is so funny and mean, if the movie were made today, they would definitely  have spun him off into his own movie series. Vernon also shines in his scenes. The movie is very satisfying, though I did notice some logic holes this time that could not quite be explained. And Walter Matthau is great, but I question his ability to seduce a couple of the beauties in this movie. And, if you really think about the film, you are rooting for a guy who is basically responsible for the deaths of 3-4 innocent people. Ah well.

In my CD player here at work:  the original Broadway cast recording of Little Women, written by Jason Howland and Mindi Dickstein and after that (to compare), a London concept album recording of Little Women with music and lyrics by Lionel Segal.

That's it for the media check...so far.

A little more to watch of X2, and then at long last I will be able to watch the film musical verion of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. There have been SO many opinions about it here, and I look forward finally to making up my own mind after I have seen the entire thing. The little preview I had at my friend's house at Easter was not overly enthusiastic, but then, my mostly negative feelings about the original material are well known.

However, I will be able to give it my undivided attention (hopefully without interruption) and should have some valid opinion on it later tonight.

POINT BLANK is one of my favorite movies as well.  Saw it on some long-forgotten double bill with something I thought I wanted to see.

Angie Dickinson is so very good at being cool and duplicitous - of course her Pepper Anderson was also a weekly fixture at my house....  Angie doesn't have a conventional beauty, but I think she is greater the sum of her parts, so to speak.  She and Lee Marvin make a great COOL team.

All of this talk and cats and dogs and Sondheim is very interesting....but I fear I must leave.

Thanks for the rock update DR LAURA.

To the theatre.

Oh, and Angie lent some sex appeal to Mr BK's neighbor Earl Holliman for many years on television.  They never struck any romantic sparks as co-stars, but I think they had a friendly work place camaraderie that was fun to watch....and their characters always seemed to genuinely care for each other.

BK mentioned the second Warners Noir DVD boxed set. Some of these seem to be stretching the definition of noir in my mind (CROSSFIRE, DILLINGER), but I can't wait to read his thoughts of THE NARROW MARGIN.

I was going to do my laundry, but, instead I will be going to the Broadhurst Theatre to see Miss Suzanne Somers in The Blonde in the Thunderbird. It's her autobiographical show scheduled for a limited run this summer. It began previews last night and I thought there would be free tickets at some point and Equity came through. I am going with no expectations.

All of our London friends are taken care of and noted as being OK.

I have forgotten my manners. Break a Leg vibes to the one and only TCB, the man who puts the double in double entendre.

Thanks Ron. Killbot is actually a girl, if that helps.

I can't believe I'm gonna be in a two-cat house. It's like the difference between having a cat and becoming a "cat person". And Scotty is cute. But NO WAY!!!!

LOL.  Sorry about the gender confusion, but "helps" isn't a word I'd bandy about in this case.

My male, Dickens, was a one-man cat, and I introduced Vickie into the house.  Dickens was not a happy fella....and the Vickie was ticked, too, even though she had come from a three-cat household (in which she had been at the bottom of the pecking order).

I came home from my first work day after Vickie's first weekend in my house, and Vickie approached me as friendly cats will, rubbing up against my leg.  I sat  in my favorite chair, and she hopped onto my lap.  I petted and cooed over her for a couple of minutes.  Dickens walked into the room and glared at us.  I got up and went to my bedroom to change clothes, went back to the living room and watched Dickens hop out of my chair and up onto the window sill.  I sat down...and within seconds, I felt a wet warmth spread through the seat of my pants.  And it wasn't ME.

Dickens had hopped up on the chair and "marked" it by peeing on it.  (Fortunately, the cushion was something I could remove and soak in water).

It took MONTHS before I found out their animosity was just over "me"...that they were, in fact, playing together and grooming one another and sharing food.

Just NOT around ME.

But they finally came around.

TPunk aka The Gal,   WELCOME! [/size]I look forward to meeting you in October. :)

MBarnum I just adored Kim Richards, however I didn’t find her name.  I see Pamela Ferdin will be there.  She was such a talented young actress I was surprised when she disappeared.

I get an update of the guest via e-mail and Kim was listed...maybe she isn't listed on the website just yet...I met Pamela Ferndyn one time when I went to that show and she was very nice and still looked the same! She gave me her card and asked me to e-mail her...I don't know why, and I never did...maybe she wanted me to go with her to chain myself to a tree or a deer or something (which she recently got arrested for).

Good Evening!

Whew!

My eyes and my mind are literally spinning... We got a bunch of "last minute" changes this afternoon that affected some of the music sequences, so...  I've been Finale-ing, and cutting and pasting up a storm the past few hours.  -And I think I'm currently missing the dinner with the conductor, the contractor and the musicians...  Hmm...

...And since I'm leaving tomorrow morning, I won't have to worry about any more last minute changes tomorrow...  As we keep saying around here:

As for my bank stuff - Once I'm back in Richmond Monday morning, I'll know exactly where things are.  There are some forms I need to sign in person in order to officially close the "old" account and "open" the new one.  However... Ron, not bad prices to fly the cat.  I fear the costs have gone up since then.  Did you put your cats in cargo?  I'm hoping Craig can carry his cat on the plane.  He will also have more than one country to travel through.

People keep telling me the pets have to go into quarantine now.  I’m confused if that is a definite.  From what I tell that is only if they don't pass the medical exam.  Quarantine would also be in the city he arrives in, not his final destination.

Before I begin I must apologize to the Broadhurst Theatre. Suzanne Somers and The Blonde in the Thunderbird is not playing at that esteemed theatre. Lennon (the musical) is at the Broadhurst. The Blonde in the Thunderbird is playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Mr. Atkinson is spinning, spinning, spinning and will be for quite some time.

Part of me wants to be bitchy and nasty and part of me just sits here with my jaw still on the floor. There is no other show on Broadway like The Blonde in the Thunderbird. It is Moose Murders. It is Dance of the Vampires. Oh, Jason, you have to see this one.

Miss Somers rendition of "If I Only Had a Brain" is almost indescribable.

The scene where she portrayed the the birth of her son with a chenille throw over her legs is burned into my brain.

I don't know what to say. It is the kind of show you only see once or twice in your life. Those of us who saw it will surely remember for a long, long time.

The sad thing is, and I'm being serious now, even though I went with absolutely no expectations, I did (and I think I still do) have respect for Miss Somers because she has overcome many obstacles in her life. I, too, am the child of an alcoholic and I could relate to many of the things of which she spoke. I have made the same kind of life discoveries she made. She has triumphed over difficult problems and come up successful, but this show is SO BAD that I can't believe that someone, anyone in her entourage doesn't know it.

Enough of this. It's 10:46 and I'm going to retire. I must do laundry tomorrow before my jolly time with ElRodmooreZinski3003.

Goodnight all.

I would NEVER have thought that Joel Shumacher (a director I've never been crazy about) had a movie in him like THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. The direction was much better than I was expecting. Oh, sure, all that flashy editing totally ruined the grandeur of "Masquerade," and he didn't get much out of the performers. He certainly allowed about the worst lip synching I've ever seen in a musical, especially from the two partners.

And I didn't find a single spark of magic or chemistry between Christine and Raoul. No wonder the Phantom was SO upset - his lovely Christine attracted to the blandest aristocrat in Paris! They all sang OK (Butler's voice was very erratic but surprisingly powerful when one least expected it), but I still felt there was just something missing. It all seemed very over-processed and overdone, but then, so was the stage version..

Lloyd Webber had to have been thrilled as the film certainly featured his music LONG and LOUD and as in your face as it could be, and the production values made it look far more expensive than the $75 million it was touted to have cost.

Terrific audience tonight....a couple of missed sound cues.

And Miss I Know Everything decided to bring the stage lights up after ACT TWO while the actors were still moving into place....including the actress playing the dead girl.....  The audience laughed and applauded the error, but it was not a happy moment for me!

Good responses to all the moments that should have had them, and some nice laughs where nice laughs should be.

Of course, when one actor went back to make a quick change, someone had moved his sweatpants, so he came out in running shorts....

Tomorrow will have its own errors, I am sure.  Saturday!

As promised, a report on TCB's production of 42nd Street...

The dance numbers came across quite well, definitely the highlights of the show.  Musically, fairly strong.  Good orchestra, nice sounding chorus, fairly good voices on the leads.  Acting, well... the dance numbers were quite good. :D  Actually, the acting wasn't all that bad, just not particularly good in most instances, though TCB was quite fun, of course.  The sound system was quite problematic, unfortunately, and the board op didn't seem to have a clue how to handle it.  I also wouldn't mind if the spotlight operator were given a bit of a training session before the next performance.  All in all, a decent evening's entertainment.

Post by: TCB on July 09, 2005, 01:07:27 AM
Well, I have returned from opening night of 42nd Street.  I would say that son, Jed’s, assessment of the production is fairly accurate.  Personally, I think the dance numbers in the show are fantastic.  I can’t say enough about the talented group of young (and not so young) hoofers who dance their hearts out and their feet off in this show.  Acting-wise, well, there isn’t a lot of it going on in this show, but, then again, I don’t remember anyone ever mentioning Ruby Keeler and Oscar in the same breath.

Technically, this show has had more problems than most theaters have in a season.  A week ago tonight, our lighting designer was walking a ladder off the stage, fell, and broke five ribs.  They finally managed to find a woman designer to take over the light design, who had, at least, done the show before; but who, unfortunately, had never worked at this theater or with any of their equipment.  She managed to light the show, but not without turning Wednesday night’s full dress rehearsal into a five hour tech rehearsal.  Unfortunately, Wednesday night was the first time the cast and, more importantly, the dancers got all of their costumes for the first time to try and see if they could do all the costume changes.  It wasn’t a problem for most of us, but the dancers had over a dozen costume changes to get through during the show.  Our sound operator was introduced to the cast last evening at 7:00 p.m., as he passed out the body mikes; and he then saw the show for the first time in his young life, exactly one hour later.  By the way, the follow-spot operator that Jed mentioned is the son of our Dorothy Brock, and is, I would guess, twelve years old.

And to top of the tech nightmare of this show, about an hour before the show started tonight, the musical director came running in the back door and announced that Dory had fallen and possibly broken her hip.  All of us in the men’s dressing room were, of course, shocked and concerned; but mostly confused, because none of us had the slightest idea who the Hell Dory was.  We later learned that Dory was our scenic designer and painter and she had literally fallen only a few feet away from the stage door.  So, for the next forty minutes, the theater parking lot was filed with ambulances and fire trucks.  Fortunately, late word was that Dory probably only dislocated her hip, although she also may have broken her ankle (ohhh, a 42nd Street reference).

Whew!  I made it before BK went through the change!

I didn't know that BK ... maybe I shouldn't make that joke! ;) Every time I hear the phrase "the change," I think of the "All In the Family" episode where Edith is going through "the change" and Archie tells her to change...now!

Fortunately, this theater is actually in Tacoma (although only a few blocks from the Narrows Bridges).  We play the next three weekends, we are dark the last weekend of the month, and then we play again the first weekend in August.
