Good morning!
Tummy not feeling so good, probably from having left-over hot dogs and onion relish for dinner that came from the party we went to on the 3rd. Who knows how long they had been sitting out.
TOD: Victor Borge
Tom Lehrer
Vaughn Meader
Bob Newhart
Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner
Milton Berle
The Smothers Brothers
Bill Cosby
I know most of these aren't traditional "stand ups" (especially Lehrer and Borge :-) ) but I loved their records when I was a kid!
Today...hmmm...not too familar with the current crop, but ones who are more recent than those above that I liked:
Jimmy Brogan
George Carlin
Emo Phillips
Judy Tenuta
A. Whitney Brown
Joel Hodgson
Kevin Nealon
Steven Wright

TOD: I would happily second most of the names already mentioned with a special shout-out to Bob Newhart, who has taken minimalism to great heights of hilarity.

Am feeling exhausted from cooking dinner for 11 on Saturday and the cleanup, which continues. But it's off to work.
Hope all of you have a good day.

After watching the fireworks at Lenox last night, I told Greg that I wished I could see how they do the whole setting-off process. Lo and behold, when we got home, PBS was airing a documentary about the history of fireworks, how they're made and the process of putting together a show. It was very interesting and answered a lot of questions I think about every time I see a fireworks show.

Good morning, all! I'm not really taking the day off, I'm working at home on my OZ presentation and Victor Herbert affairs. The Upper West Side has been amazingly quiet this long weekend, and I have really enjoyed it. I think this afternoon my friend Chris is stopping by and it will be nice to see him. Perhaps we'll go over to Artie's or somewhere else for dinner and I can hear all about his current round of dating and what his band is up to. They're performing on July 16 and he's been busy in the recording studio with them for the past couple of weeks.
Last night I had a long dream about working in the Miami University Library and cataloging many large green-bound collections of plays. I couldn't tell in the dream if I were there as a student assistant, a job I held for three years of undergrad and two years of grad school, or if I were on the library staff, a position I held the last year before I left Oxford for good. Anyway, I woke up thinking about a number of wonderful ladies I knew, worked with, and admired during those six years: Helen Ball, one of the best employers I ever worked for, Sarah Barr and her mother Esther Crist, Ruth Hines, who was my supervisor in the periodicals dept for the first three years I was a library assistant, Katy Guckler, a concentration camp survivor, and her sister, whose name I cannot remember, but she looked very much like harpsichordist Wanda Landowska. Katy and her sister both spoke English with a heavy Czech accent and they were opposites: Katy with very wild white hair and her sister with black hair pulled back into a bun, both very funny and sharp as tacks with wicked senses of humor.
I don't know why I'm remembering these women today, and I guess that most of them, if not all, are longer living. Still, I remember and honor them.
-
I was home before fireworks started last night and hadn't intended on watching any fireworks. It turns out that my front yard is the perfect place to see a grand display of fireworks at a City park about a mile away. So, I saw fireworks after all.
I said, "OOOoooohhhh!!," and I said, "AAAAAahhhhhhh!" Because those are in the fireworks viewing rules.

Elmore, have you ever heard one of Percy Faith's earliest big hits, the Azevedo tune "Delicado"? That's Landowska's harpischord featured in that. Percy and Mitch Miller were in the studio getting ready to record the tune and noticed the harpsichord in the corner, locked shut. They managed to gently force the lock open and decided to feature the harpsichord on the tune (I can't remember what Percy's original orchestration called for). I've always loved that story.
-
The funny thing about it is, because "Delicado" was such a huge smash, Faith started using harpsichords in his arrangements all the time, both for his own orchestra and for the tons of Columbia artists he was writing for ("Come on-a My House" by Rosemary Clooney, for example).

And with that semi-fascinating bit o'trivia, we turn off the computer and head east!

Monday morning greetings! We are staying with Mary Linda's grandfather and his wife (step-grandmother to ML). Carol just fed us a fantastic brunch. Also staying here are ML's aunt and almost-4-year-old cousin.

DR Elmore - the last I heard, Sarah was still living and her daughter Belinda is now working for MU libraries. Third generation!
-
BK, I had the privilege to work with Shelley Berman twice in dinner theatre, doing the water plays -- DON'T DRINK THE WATER & YOU KNOW I CAN'T HEAR YOU WHEN THE WATER'S RUNNING. A lot of actors did not think it a privilege to work with Shelley, because of what they perceived as his difficult temperment. I enjoyed both of my times working with him very much. What people didn't understand about him, that they thought made him difficult, was that he was very precise about comedy. They were sloppy actors. He hated actors who cluttered up a punchline by doing overwrought reactions and business. He firmly believed (which is something I believe in) "one joke at a time"; "keep the comedy clean (as in uncluttered)".
He taught me invaluable lessons about timing and comedy and I enjoyed working with him both times. We got along; I like to think because I "got" it. He was a very good actor and very smart. You could discuss Shakespeare with him. Off-stage time with him was a treat...some of the funniest moments I ever had were spent in his company. I'm delighted that he's had a late in life success with Larry David's show.
I remember once he and I were sitting in the house watching the director direct an actor in a big, overwrought, unfunny piece of shtick, Shelley glanced over at me dourly and murmured out of the corner of his mouth, "I like my comedy subtle." I nodded in agreement.
-
I'm home, I'm awake, and back to work. More later...
-
Thanks for the travel vibes - that's a whole other post completely!
-
DR Elmore - the last I heard, Sarah was still living and her daughter Belinda is now working for MU libraries. Third generation!
Belinda is about two years younger than I. Esther Crist was born in Middletown, in the same South Main Street area my grandmother lived in. I always liked Belinda, and I loved loved loved Sarah. I hope she is well. She's a beautiful, funny lady. Her kids were great. She had a son about a year older than I who came back from Viet Nam with a ton of problems. I hope he's okay.

He will give me an update later. Evidently Kyle and Sugar (the police dog) were returning from a search and rescue situation when they were hit.

Well, I think I will watch and burn some episodes of SEA HUNT onto DVR. I did the same with episodes of HIGHWAY PATROL yesterday.

From Ginny:
By the way, Michigan doesn't "feel like Michigan." I expected when we crossed the state like that the temperature would drop 20 degrees and the humidity would dissipate. No such luck - today Michigan feels like SW Ohio.

LOL Derbrucer. We only needed to hide Sherlock from the dog police. Keith also wanted a place to sit and the rock under the trees worked well.
Why did you need to hide him from the dog police? Weren't dogs allowed on the street?
-
Feels like Arizona here.
-
I'd do an Arizona dance, but it's too hot.
-
The street yes, the park no.
-
Ok, I get it then. BTW, they are amending our vicious animal ordinance so you have the option to take the dog somewhere 50 miles out of the city. There has to be verification of who adopted the dog or what rescue it went to so dogs won't be abandoned in the country, but it's a little better. They did keep the pit bull ban, though.
-
I went to the office for a 10 minute thing I should have done last week, but will be ok if it's done before tomorrow. I couldn't believe the building door was locked! I have a key so it's no big deal for me, but there are lots of people in the building who I've seen working on Monday holidays in the past. I was surprised that you couldn't get in today. A woman was standing outside with an envelope almost in a panic. She said it had to get to her lawyers office. So, i took it for her and slid it under their door. Wonder how many other people will try to get in today
-
DR Cillaliz, I can't believe your family is so mad at you and your mom. I'm sure you spent hours cleaning the mess for them. Tell them next time someone gets sick you will just leave the vomit for them to clean up.
I could see maybe if it was a new car that it would be upsetting. But the fact that you cleaned it ...
It just seems crazy that they wouldn't just say "next time please tell us" and let it go. I can't believe their reactions. I hope your mom isn't still that upset.

DR Jane I finally got my mom to read THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. She didn't think that she would like it (she reads a lot). I told her she would like it. And she did. I think she is next at the library for the second book. And there were only like 11 people (with 6 copies) for book 3.

Very warm today here as well....and tickets go on sale for BLITHE SPIRIT. Tomorrow is our invited guests/photo opportunity performance....and then we open Thursday.
I may take some photos tonight....our set is DONE.
Hopefully Charles has calmed down - he didn't get the PLACES call on Friday evening and was late on his first entrance - so I will be sure he gets the call from now on, perhaps accompanied by a bop on the head with a frying pan....as they say in EATING RAOUL.

I went back to sleep for a couple of hours, and now I am up and have printed out a few orders. Nothing earth-shattering but a fair amount. I knew today wouldn't be that busy, order-wise, but since another label that was supposed to release their two titles last week but didn't because they didn't want to bump up against the Varese release of Spartacus (in fact two labels pushed their releases - normally my releases don't conflict with anyone), I had no choice but to release today. I suspect when people return from their vacations the orders will pick up - our last Ken Thorne CD was a pretty quick sellout.
-

This is good your sister agrees. :) Your father seems very quiet through all of this. Does he wisely stay out of it? Send your mother a big hug from me, if you dare to say you talk about such things on a public site.

Look at the tail lights, DR TCB.....you would be completely useless in a police investigation.

I walked down Main Street this morning to get coffee. Looks like almost all the stores will be open today. I hope the employees get holiday pay. I've never worked in a retail store, so I'm spoiled in having 5 (or 7?) holidays off each year.

I appreciated DR CP's story about Mr Shelley Berman.

Looking forward to rehearsal this evening....hopefully the cast members have looked at their scripts at least once over the last two days.....I have every confidence in them....they are a pretty good bunch.
But we don't have to worry about peaking too early.....to be sure.

I guess MR BK forgot to ask Mr Larson about Miss Hayes yesterday.

Maybe I will take my other camera and get some video this evening......we shall see......

Ok, I need to go to the basement and continue the project I started yesterday. I made a lot of progress on the organizing and realized it's not nearly as bad as I thought it was. This is good news.

-
Well, I think I will watch and burn some episodes of SEA HUNT onto DVR. I did the same with episodes of HIGHWAY PATROL yesterday.
Mike, have you come across the episode involving the hydroplane race? They used the actual footage of the Miss Thriftway hitting the Coast Guard cutter on Lake Washington back in, I believe 1959.
-
I took 5 hours to walk the street fair yesterday, I hope everyone in the retail business did well. I'm starting to get to know some of the long time store owners (40 or more years on Main St.) and they all say the same thing. That the new landlords are raising the rents by 2 or 3 times on new leases and forcing the long time stores to relocate, so the flavor of Ventura Main Street is changing. People used to come here from all over the country to go to the book stores etc., and now the new stores are just any city chain stores no one cares about.
The same thing happened on Hollywood Blvd., during the 4 years I lived there. The landlords didn't live in Hollywood and were clueless about what made the tourist come to Hollywood. Now it's just supergraphics advertising covering all the buildings. Yuck.
-
VIBES, VIBES, AND MORE VIBES FOR EVERYONE TODAY. :)

Need to wash dishes, take out the trash, do some yard work, watch a movie.
Take a walk down to the pier and beach. Have not put my toes in the sand yet.

I just saw on Facebook (pardon my French) that DR Ann spent the Fourth of July in the hospital getting major doses of morphine. And she is apparently still there.
-
DR ELMORE.....that will suffice.
-
Vibes for DR ANN....oh my!
-
I just spoke to son, Jed, and apparently yesterday morning Ann was doubled over in pain, and they took her to the hospital They think it is some sort of abnominal problem. She is feeling better (on morphine) and may be able to go home tomorrow.
-
Thanks for the report, DR TCB.
-
Afternoon all.
That is all.
-
I hope they know what caused the pain, or else she'll be back as soon as the morphine wears off.
Vibes to Ann!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DR TCB, thanks for the update!

I shall now be off to the theatre to change out the zebra stripe curtains to some lovely seafoam green chiffon sheer curtains....and add the final special effects.
We will also block the curtain call tonight....always a cause for tears with some thinking they should be taking their bows LATER....

I'm sorry to read that.

Vibes for DR Jeanne. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DR Jane that New Yorker thing was funny.
DITTO!!
Glad you enjoyed it. :)

MEGA VIBES FOR DR ANN!!!

I can finally return for a PT session today. Wish me luck I retained my mobility and strength and that the therapist can do something to reduce the pain.

My favorites were Lily Tomlin and Flip Wilson.

Hugs to MBarnum and vibes to his friends...that is indeed tragic.

Back from a nice lunch with dear reader Jeanne - we went to Louise's in Westwood. I ate too much, but that's life.
-
BUDDY HACKETT
I saw Buddy perform in Vegas once. He was very funny...and very R-rated.
I remember him performing on HBO a couple of comedy specials. He was hysterical and VERY R-rated!
-
That sounds like a disco song, DR JENNIFER
It's 95F. It rarely gets that hot here.

Vibes for DR Ann. Hope they find out what was wrong and i hope she is feeling better.

DR George VIBES to your sister. I'm sorry her position didn't have just a once a month closure.
Jane, I didn't write my post correctly...my sister didn't actually lose her job. She DID just get the one-day-a-month furlough, but she said that she got her "layoff papers" (they were for the furlough), so that's what I posted. She does still have her job and is very happy to have it.
But thanks for the vibes, anyway. :)

Yes they found out that "furlough" is not a word that is found in any of the State Labor Contracts. So each and every one of the state employees who are affected got a letter of temporary layoff on July 12, with a rehire of July 13. The state is required to give us each one of those letters for all ten layoff days.
-
Did you like it in Sweet River?
Yes, I liked it it was fine.
Just having a Schmidt and Jones moment.
-
I'd like to swim in a clear blue stream where the water is icy cold.
(Especially on a day as hot, humid and hazy as today).

It's 108 in Washington DC. Like Phoenix with humidity

I've been down the basement working on the projects I was going to have help with next weekend. So far I have thrown out one garbage bag full of stuff. Washed 4 loads of blankets and bedding that were down there and smelled a little musty - I'll store them upstairs in the spare bedroom closet. Emptied several boxes of books, sorted other boxes and put together a cabinet to store some of the other stuff that hasnt' had a home. I'm actually getting close to having the big room organized.
-
Thank you Laura, Cilla & George.
The pain didn't interfere with the stretches he does to me. In fact, probably due to the warm weather, he said my flexibility & mobility had improved. Because of the pain he, again, reduced my weights. He was able to reduce the pain some.
Now that I'm home typing the pain is getting worst again. I really must stop typing so much.
-
Callie has been right there helping me. It's really been funny. I was also roasting a chicken and when the timer would go off or the dryer would buzz she'd come and get me and meow. I really think she was telling me there was some strange noise and I better go check it out.

I spent the day finishing the corrections for my galley proofs, which I will send off to the publisher in a day or two, after I've had a chance to review them.
-
Tonight, in anticipation of getting PROMISES. PROMISES tomorrow, we're going to watch THE APARTMENT.
-
I would like rain.
Soon it's gonna rain, I can feel it, soon it's gonna rain, I can tell. . .
-
We watched a terrible movie last night, MARRIAGE ON THE ROCKS with Frank Sinatra, Deborah Kerr and Dean Martin. It was part of a Sinatra DVD box set I had, and I'd never seen this film before.
The basic story premise had potential, but the script was very unfunny and the director knew absolutely nothing about comedy timing.
Where was Billy Wilder when they needed him?
The only bright spot in the movie was Cesar Romero. He was fun, but it was like he was playing in a different movie.
-
The DVD of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be released tomorrow. If we are very, very lucky NetFlix will receive our returned DVD's and will send Girl to us. If we aren't lucky on the first round it could be a long time before we receive it.
-
Speaking of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, I had a customer today who was outraged that we did not have THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST in paperback. . .the book hasn't even been out a whole month yet!
-
Were you able to calm the customer? I wonder if the person has seen other people reading it in paperback. Of course they then would have been reading the Hornets' Nest version as I did. ;)

My mom said she saw a commercial for the first and second movies. And they did what i expected. They did not make it clear that the movie is in Swedish with English subtitles.
I'll bet there will be a lot of people who get the dvd who will have no idea.
I know that maybe a lot of people will not like the idea that it is in Swedish. But I still think that the promos should advertise this.
-
That's funny that someone would be outraged. I mean if a book is not available in paperback why would she think you would miraculously have it??

The idea of a promo is to sell. Maybe not advertising the language is intentional ;D If anyone reads what they are buying/renting they will know it is a foreign film.
-
The dvd has the English dub as well as the original Swedish track.
-
I looked at the NetFlix queue again and the movie, to be released tomorrow, now says "short wait" instead of the release date. Since the post office is closed today I find it hard to imagine Netflix is processing anything. I still have hopes it will be mailed to me tomorrow. I'm wondering if a DVD can be mailed to arrive on the release date.
-

Really? Where did you see that? Have you read if the dubbing is good?
-

No, she was pissed off and threw the other two books back at the table from where she had picked them up.
The haze, the heat and the humidity will do that to a person.
I thought she was better educated: she had her clippings from Entertainment Weekly's special edition on The Millennium Novels, and yet, she was insistent that there was yet another book to the trilogy titled, "Millennium."
-
Did you explain the author died before completing the book?
-
I hope that poor woman feels better and is embarrassed at her behavior. ;D
-
I hope you were laughing, after she left. :)
-

Really? Where did you see that? Have you read if the dubbing is good?
I'm going through the reviews of the disc online, and I'm only finding English tracks (stereo and 5.1 DD) on the blu-ray. . .but, there are not a lot of reviews out there yet. . .
-
Ah, Amazon says that the dvd is dubbed. . .
-
Netflix also lists the English track.
-
I still have a DVD to watch and send back before I'm due to get Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I'll wait.
-
Did you explain the author died before completing the book?
Yes, but she was very put out about the third book NOT being in paperback. That was the major bee in her bonnet. She would have bought all three, so she said, IF the final book were in paperback. It was when I explained to her that since it was a new release, the paperback edition would probably not appear for ten months to a year that she got into her hissy fit.
-
She acted as if she has never purchased a book before. It is so ridiculous it is laughable, but then I wasn't the one dealing with her.
-
So was there something going on with the stars and planets to make people so insane over the weekend?
-
I still have a DVD to watch and send back before I'm due to get Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I'll wait.
You just finished reading the books. I didn't want to watch while I was still reading them and enjoyed a little space between the last book and the DVD.
-
Netflix also lists the English track.
I never look at that. I usually wait until we watch the DVD and see what the options are. Thanks.
-
Well, I think I will watch and burn some episodes of SEA HUNT onto DVR. I did the same with episodes of HIGHWAY PATROL yesterday.
Mike, have you come across the episode involving the hydroplane race? They used the actual footage of the Miss Thriftway hitting the Coast Guard cutter on Lake Washington back in, I believe 1959.
Nothing like that so far. but one episode does have Robert Conrad in tight pants. Just as dramatic, I imagine.

We've had a delightful day celebrating Rob and Mary Linda's engagement with lots of relatives (mostly hers) and friends. My sister and her husband came from Grand Blanc, MI, and I was very pleased that they made the trip. It was nice to visit with them. The prospective maid of honor and 3 of the bridesmaids were also there.
Mary Linda's mom had hoped for most of the party to be out in their beautiful yard, but it's so hot and humid that they moved in all inside to the air conditioning. That meant my spending about 6 hours in the company of their 5 cats :P I did start taking Zyrtec Saturday and, so far, my allergies haven't flared up too bad.
When I read about things like Kyle's accident, DR Ann's discomfort, and DR Cillaliz's family angst, I realize that itchy eyes and a scratchy throat are pretty minor. Vibes to all!
-
.....
A friend of mine and DR Ginny was crazy for Huey Lewis.
Um, can you give me a hint, DR Elmore?
-
After the engagement party broke up, we took 2 vehicles out to see Grand Ledge Opera House (http://www.gloperahouse.com/), the venue that has been selected for Rob and Mary Linda's reception. It wasn't open, but we walked all around the outside and peeked in the windows. Everybody else went back to ML's parents' house for the night, and Richard and I took a drive through Lansing to see the State Capitol and East Lansing to see Michigan State University. Our route back to our hosts' home took us past the church where the ceremony will take place.
-
Ginny regarding your wonderful day.... :D :D
-
Thanks, Jane. Tomorrow, we'll pick up Rob about 9:30 or so and head back to Ohio. Our route home takes us past Ann Arbor and we may swing through town, just to have a look.
'night!
-
Doing some late catchup. Vibes for DR Ann and for DR MBarnum's friend, Mark.
-
The behavior of the woman in the bookstore is all too common. I faced it a lot last Christmas with the last "Twilight" book, which was not in paperback, except in Spanish. And the argument, of course, was, "If it's in paperback in Spanish, then ..."
Hard to explain to people who won't listen that the Spanish paperback cost more than the hardback English.
-
Loved the story, DR CP, about Shelley Berman. I know of him largely through "A Family Affair" and would have liked to see more of him.
-
I'd never ... heard of Brother Dave Garner.

Today, all that I've been doing is watching some TV, burning a couple of DVDs and not much else. I also have a bit of a headache. :P
I haven't left my house at all...but I did take a shower. :)
-
I was busy plotzing.
-
I'm quite tired, but everything is ready for shipping tomorrow.
-
Took a break from HIGHWAY PATROL and SEA HUNT and instead began watching some ROUTE 66. George Maharis and Martin Milner are both fantastic actors, but so far the stories haven't really done much for me. I skipped to the last episode on the set, which co-starred Whitney Blake and Carol Ohmart, and that one I enjoyed.
-
In fact, George Maharis is a much better actor then I was expecting him to be. I need to see more of his stuff.
-
Actually, I guess I did see more of his stuff when he did that layout for PLAYGIRL magazine back in the 1970s...but that wasn't really what I had meant.
-
Home after a long day, but things need to be done. Did get to listen to disc two of Promises Promises and what fun that was. I probably should have listened to disc one first as I don't remember the out of tune parts as well as I thought I did. Also, the hidden track was awesome.
I know, I know -- Amazon review now....
-
How about a page 8 George Maharis dance.
My siste Sue had a big crush on him back in the 60s.
