Title: YOU KNOW THE MANTRA
Post by: bk on August 19, 2005, 12:17:48 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know the mantra, the mantra knows you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently learning their mantra and then they'll be on their way.

THE DUCK FOLLIES

I roasted the duck last night.  The results were better than I expected, but I need to think things over before I can really write about the experience.

But der B was happy, which is the important part.

MEDIA REPORT:

Der Brucer gave me the newest nine discs of Good Eats episodes, with Alton answering cards and emails after each ep as bonus footage.  It'll take me a little while to work through all that.

Dear Der Brucer:

Today we're ladsitting again, just William since Alex is off at some camp all week.  William deserves a treat, so we're taking him to lunch and a movie, and he'll get to decide what plays in the car CD player.  This probably means a lot of Tarzan again.  We'll survive.

Good morning, all!  This week has been a frustrating one and I'm glad it's over.  One step forward and two backward, that's what it's been like, and I feel I've accomplished nothing remotely worth mentioning.

I have to get this cruiseline singer's work done ASAP, so that will be the main goal of the weekend.  I think I'm also fighting a bit of depression and an urge to hibernate for several months.

TOD:
CD:  Songs for a New World, Last 5 Years
DVD:  Le Nozze di Figaro (Ponnelle film)
  VHS:  cheap porn

DRBen, safe trip!  Have a good time.

DR Jose, plaese send Skip and my love and congratulations to Curtis and Tom.  We lost track of the days and didn't realize their actual opening night was last night in time to send good wishes.

What's in the Cd player - same as last week, so i won't bother enumerating.  But the word of the day had special meaning to me.  Waffles were a key part of my youth, the best summer job I had during my teen years, possibly the most enjoyable job I ever had.  I worked at a cotton candy stand in Coney Island, just two blocks from my home, and couldn't quite get the handle on making the cotton candy look pretty, so they put me on the Belgian waffle station, making waffles from scratch.  We made up all kinds of stories to tell customers about the origin of the Belgian waffle as we made a fresh, almost from scratch waffle for the customer.  The one thing that we had to hide was that we were making them with lard, so we were taught how to artfully keep the lard under the counter, wipe a brush along the lard, and then brush the waffle iron with the lard before pouring the batter into the waffle iron.  If anyone asked, we had to say it was made with lard rather than butter, but maybe three people actually asked what that fatty substance was.  I wish I could remember some of the stories we told about the origins of waffles, since it is the word of the day, but I somehow felt like a little bit of a street entertainer when I told them (think Mayer Rothschild doing "He Tossed a Coin") - I'd even get tips form time to time if the waffle came out particularly well.  I actually got applause twice for deftly flipping over the waffle iron.

If anyone actually read that whole long treatise, thanks for listening.  Summers of '76 and '77 - a very good time.

DVD - the bonus features on the Vanity Fair that I watched last night with my book group.  We agreed that this version was being very kind to Becky, who reminded many of us of Scarlet O'Hara.  Also, Iron Jawed Angels, HBO film about 19th century suffragists.

TOnight, one of the fellows that I went to NYC with is coming over to watch MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. We both so enjoyed SPAMALOT that we decided we'd relive the madness by watching this wonderful film again.

Neither he nor I have seen it in a couple of years, though as we were watching SPAMALOT, we knew certain things from the film were changed and other things moved around. I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

On the John Schlesinger front, I've just gotten to the midway point in the book when DARLING became the darling of international film circles.

That's another film I haven't seen in years.

Speaking of SIX FEET UNDER, I am literally dreading this Sunday's episode. As I mentioned last week, many of the characters are in such tumultuous places right now, and even though the episode is 75 minutes long, I just can't see how the show will come to a satisfying conclusion with just a single episode yet to go.

I also dread it ending because I'm going to miss it so much. These characters more than most on episodic TV have for me seemed SO real.

I'm going to have to pull out SPORTS NIGHT to get some happy images of the gorgeous Peter Krause back on my TV screen.

Believe it or don't department:  When I first moved to Portland decades ago (oy, I was still a teenager, oy), I was in a country-rock band called The Waffles.  I kid you not.

I posted about Darling here a month or two ago, which I had never seen until quite recently.  I'm very sorry for those who consider it a masterpiece, but I couldn't stand it.  Overwrought and way too self-aware.  Schlesinger is just not a new wave quasi-verite director, in my not so humble opinion.

Good Morning!

I'm up... after another sort of not-so-good night of sleep.  Not really restless... Just not feeling comfortable...???  I'm guessing it was my post-opening night adrenaline just working it's way through my system.  Although, now that I think of it, I was also kept up by the sometimes not-so-faint "noises" of one "happy", sometimes "very happy" girl last night... If you get my drift.

In any case, I'm up.  I'm feeling OK.  And now...

Summer of '76 - I remember it well. I was going into my sixth and seventh months in the womb.

The summer of '76 was the last year that my family lived in Colorado (my dad was to retire from the army the next year).  It was not only the Bicentennial Celebration of the USA, it was also the Centennial Celebration of Colorado becoming a state.  They had huge events everywhere and this one particular place that we went to had a big gigantic scroll where everyone who was there could sign.  It (and other stuff, too, I asume) would be put into a time capsule on top of Pike's Peak and opened in 2076.  I was 10 and my sister was 12.  She decided that she wants to live to be 112 so that she can be there when they open it up.  I don't think either of us will make it, but with medical technology advancing all the time, you never know. ;)

Marge Champion!!!  I still enjoy her dance with Gower to the song "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" - so lovely.  The last time I saw her was on the syndicated FAME playing a bigoted dance teacher who was put in her place by Debbie Allen (written by Debbie Allen and Directed by Debbie Allen with choreography by Debbie Allen) - and as Judy Garland once said about Ray Bolger:  "Different music - same goddamn dance."

Good morning, all.

Am taking today off.  I busted butt Wednesday and yesterday finishing a project at work.  I worked late Wednesday to ensure I'd be able to finish yesterday.

One final thank you to everyone for the kind expressions of solace over the parting of my feline companion.  The hardest thing I've had to endure, thus far, was getting up yesterday morning and not having Vickie sitting by my bedroom door waiting impatiently for me to put out her fresh food.

I've had myself a few good bouts of total grief and am moving on.

Loved the waffle story, DRFJL.

DR GEORGE where is the Japanese Gaston?

Wow - Mifune would have made a great Gaston back in the 7 SAMURAI days.

DARLING - well DR JMK thinks it is NOT a masterpiece, I remember when he posted that.  I can't go as far as to say it IS.....but I love the performances of Laurence Harvey, Dirk Bogarde, and Julie (AA winner) Christie.  AND I love some of the lines....especially Bogarde to Christie: "I don't send whores home in taxis."  And Christie to Harvey: "You do your best work in the bedroom, don't you?"  Harvey's reply: "You underestimate me, darling.  I'm also very good on the telephone." :)

"Big Brother 6" Spoilage:

Last night's twist was neat.  I loved everything that happened.  The MAIN thing is for either Rachel or Howie to win the next HOH competition.  If they don't, it's over...except for the shouting.

One thought:  If either Rachel or Howie represents Janelle in veto competition and wins, they should consider saving Jennifer and replacing her with James.  That way, they force "the disciples" to finally vote James off.  I know it's tempting to ignore James, but he must go.  Remember Will Kirby!!!  Everyone thought Will was insurance and that no one would vote for him if he was standing at the end.  But he won.

I pray Rachel or Howie wins the next HOH and puts up April and Ivette (unless Jennifer is still there...I'd substitute Jenn for April...make April suffer in the house as long as possible, I would).

DR Jennifer:  I'd vote out Maggie.  She's the glue that holds "the friendship" together.  Without her level-headed attitude -- which is being more and more tested by the stupidity of her alliance -- they will totally disintegrate into squabbling idiots.

Recall Jenn's "suggestion" last night...that if it came to voting off someone who was "brought" into the competition (like April, Maggie or Beau) or for someone who "wanted" to compete (like her, and Ivette), Jenn suggested they vote off the former.  Wasn't Jenn "clever" to suggest something that targeted her for backstabbing.

Ah - I sympathize, DRELMORE.  I once had to change my PayPal password, and their site is NOT user friendly.  You have to spend hours trying to find the right link to click to contact ANYBODY.

My favorite is the circle you get sent around in that ends:  Does this answer your question?  Was this page helpful?  Nearly as bad as its partner in crime EBAY.

Well, DR elmore, do you want me to send your purchases or just hold them here until your visit next month?

Good question, DRGinny.  I'm having a hell of a shipping week.  I sent some things DRJoey purchased and couldn't carry back with him via Fed Ex to Indiana:  Fed Ex has tried twice to deliver them and no one's there to accept them.  Joey isn't returning calls to me or to Fed Ex so I'm thoroughly out of joint on shipments this week.  Add to that, the DARLING OF THE DAY debacle and today's disastrous eBay/Paypal situation, I can't think and my head hurts.  I guess you should hold onto them.  Oy!

Another "Big Brother 6" tidbit (not a spoiler):

Among the disciples, Maggie is the ONLY one who has won a competition (excluding James who isn't a member of either side).

April, Jennifer, Ivette and Beau are all no-shows in terms of actually winning a competition.

Jennifer was "given" the HOH comp.  It counts as a win, but she had to lie and swear on her life (which, by my reckoning, is now "forfeit" to Kaysar) for him to withdraw.  I refuse to consider it a "win" because of that.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

: )

Rachel, Howie and Janelle have each been HOH.  Rachel has also won a Veto competition.  I still believe they're smarter/abler than the entire "friendship".

MORE BB6 SPOILAGE

I don't think they should put James up.  He isn't really part of the 5 that have stuck together. I would make sure it's one of them that leaves. Their alliance must lose someone for Howie Janelle and Rachelle to have a chance at all

SEVEN BRIDES is still running at Discoveryland. They tend to pay a year late, but they pay, so we don't say much.

Technically, it is the job of the theatre that is renting the materials to erase the materials before they ship them back to us.  As you can see, that doesn't happen very often, and our materials get turned around and shipped out almost immediately to the next group, so sometimes they become a tad neglected. Next time it happens, please call me and let me know so I can make a note of it in your account to ensure you won't be billed for the damages.

But who would you vote off between maggie and jen?

MORE SPOILAGE

I would vote off Maggie.  She is such a strong part of their alliance, she needs to go.  Jen won't last the distance. Although, it would separate another pair to take her out and April would be lost without her

Yes, ça va, Jason, but business is real slow at hotel and, at this time, Paris should be called Rome since Italian seems to be the only language spoken around here! NOT that there's something wrong about it, mind you!
(I don't speak Italian :()

I should not mention that here, but some Italian guests were having some good time last night around 2:00 am; they were speaking some "international" language, if you get my hint, and were VERY loud about it!
A slight embarassing situation, even though the hotel is hardly filled....

About Marge Champion. I just loved her in the MGM musicals. She had a fetching personality, sang rather well, and I always wondered how far she could have gone on her own. I've always loved "Derry Down Dilly."

That said, she was, bar none, the absolute worst thing about that revival of FOLLIES a few years ago. Even with a body mic, you could barely hear her, and her dancing was rather leaden, kind of holding DOnald Saddler from being able to cut loose. I know she was a trouper just being up there at her age, but I wish someone else had been used, even if she wasn't a big name.

That really makes me smile. Last summer, when we came to NYC, one of my friends chose to go to cAROLINE OR CHANGE instead of AVENUE Q. Of course, we all came raving back to the room about AVENUE Q, and he felt obligated to talk about what a masterpiece CAROLINE was, much more so than any puppet show could possibly be. One listen to the cast recording of CAROLINE convinced me I made the right decision.

I would think CAROLINE would be a difficult show to mount and a difficult show to sell to the public.

Good Afternoon!

Back from Mass MoCA - The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.  Quite an interesting museum, and a bunch of the current exhibitions tended to run toward the bizarre and disturbing.  The type of stuff you really take your time looking at and absorbing, or just make a cursory glance or two at.  For most of the works currently on display, I chose the "glance" approach, but there were some other pieces I did linger over/at for a while.

There is one set of installations by the artist, Cai Guo-Quiang, called "Inopportune".  It's sort of play on Chinese scroll painting, but done on a much larger and actually non-abstract scale.  The main piece is called "Stage 1" and it's built around nine white Ford Tauruses with "fireworks" coming out of them.  Quite a sizable installation.  I believer there's a picture of it on the museum's website.

Before heading over to the Mass MoCA, I stopped for lunch at the Water Street Grill where I had a surprisingly good lunch of fried oysters.  The oysters were very fresh, just the right amount of breading, just the right amount of crisp, and still juicy on the inside.  And eight nice-sized oysters for only $6.00.  Not bad at all.  Truly a very pleasant surprise.

Another surprise was that Curtis, the composer, let me use his car to get to Mass MoCA, and I also happened to pick up my director, Carlos, on the way.  We had a very good time at the museum, and since he had not had lunch yet, we sat for a while in their Cafe Latino.  Lots of finger foods: empanaditas, wedges of queso blanco, tostones, etc.  Oh, and I had a very, very, very smooth mojito.

:)

-Now, I just need my ice cream fix, and that will complete my culinary adventures for the day.

WAFFLE, baby, WAFFLE.

I had a turkey sub.  It was oke.  Also a cup of clam chowder, which was good.  Nothing yummilicious, I'm afraid.  I've saved room (calorie-wise) for some sort of dessert later.

As I approach senior membership, I'm starting to consider what to use as an avatar.  Do people generally use current pictures?  Or is it OK to use a photo from days gone by, even if it's not entirely recognizable as oneself?

Hee hee, I used a picture that is a few pounds and years lighter than a current one might be....I suspect I may not be the only one! ;D

I believe this'll be the next cd I buy!

Betty Garrett was an established musical actress on Broadway (starring in the 1946 hit show “Call Me Mister” where she introduced “South America, Take It Away”) when MGM beckoned. Fans of Hollywood musicals will remember her in films such as “Words And Music”, “Take Me Out To The Ball Game”, “Neptune’s Daughter” and the classic “On The Town” where she played Brunhilde Esterhazy, the man-chasing taxi driver.

Married to actor Larry Parks (star of “The Jolson Story”), the late 1940s were good for Betty and Larry. They were popular and made many films but in 1951 Larry Parks admitted he had been a Communist. From that day onwards the couple were shunned and blacklisted. The film offers dried up so the couple toured Britain with their act and headlined The London Palladium where they scored a great success with the British public. They toured Britain 4 times.

It took Betty Garrett 20 years to recover from this setback. In 1973 she joined the cast of TV’s “All in the Family”, the American version of the British “Till Death Do Us Apart”, where she remained for 3 years before moving to another TV hit show, “Laverne and Shirley” in 1976. In 1989 Betty returned to Broadway starring in the stage musical of “Meet Me In St. Louis” and was recently seen in the 2001 Broadway production of “Follies”.

The 28 tracks on this CD were recorded between 1947 and 1953. We have included standards and novelty numbers; songs from her films; her only US Top Ten hit - Buttons and Bows; and the duets with Larry Parks, Gene Kelly and Jimmy Durante. This is the first Betty Garrett solo CD and almost all of the tracks are appearing on CD for the first time.

Am I the only one who finds the "40 Year Old Virgin" movie commercials crass?

I mean I don't think I would be considered a "prude" but it drives me crazy that we try to keep only appropriate shows on the TV when the Vixter is watching (and she normally goes to bed at 9 so she's not watching late) and in between the shows you get inundated with that kind of garbage.

Bless her soul she said," Well if he's not married of course he's a virgin" but it drives me crazy that material like that is shoved in your face

Or am I being a curmudgeon again?

I'm afraid this is the kind of "cultural" world we live in!
It's the same in movie theaters and trailers when one attends a family fare!

On the other end (hand?!) some stuff goes over children's head and don't affect them the way we, adults, think they do!
We are more "pervert" than children can be! ;)

Yes, this is definitely not a Disney world, full of princes and princesses!
(I found that out only last year.... and I'm over 50! :-[ :D)

A quiet day on the home front.

BB6 Live Feeds have been all fish tank the past four-plus hours.  They're exhausting themselves, I'm sure with veto competition, veto ceremony, eviction ceremony and new HOH competition all being done today for airing tomorrow night.

I have watched "Top Hat" today on DVD.  Funny that DR Matt H, who was SO antsy about getting the boxed set, STILL hasn't managed to ignore other diversions so that he can start watching.

Good Evening!

Back from the final full company meeting.   Michael Coglin, the Company Manager, opened up with some witty remarks and Thank You's, then Roger Rees did the same thing.  It was a very nice send-off.  However, before wrapping things up, they presented some awards to some of the Outstanding Apprenti who have been here this summer.  And they also started/instituted a new award this year which will be distributed to five people every season for "special" reasons.  The award is called "The Willy"... And it's shaped like one too.  -Sorry, DR vixmom.

-This was one award I was happy not to receive - Who knows how I'd have to explain that thing to security?!?!?

In all fairness, however, the award simply looked like one of those travel toothbrush holders mounted on a small pedestal, then painted gold...  Well... I guess what else would a Willy look like?

;D

And I also found out that we're technically Sold Out for tomorrow.  Which will undoubtedly cause some problems for some of the cast members who were just planning on putting "Reserved" signs on the chairs in Goodrich for their family members.  We shall see...

re:  Betty Garrett -- there are tons of outtakes from the pre-recordings for MGM's "Words and Music."  Garrett played the thankless role of the fictional girl who broke Larry Hart's heart and spirit (a neat trick THAT would have been for any female, his mother excluded [perhaps], since he was by all accounts a repressed gay man).  Among them (and they are on an alternate track on the laser disc of the film that is part of the MGM boxed set called the "MGM Composer Series" (along with "Till the Clouds Roll By" and  "Deep in My Heart") is an extraordinary rendition of "My Funny Valentine" by Ms. Garrett that I love more than any other I've heard.

Interestingly, the New York Times has given THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN the full rollout of a major film.  Not only is it a great review (the critic calls the movie a "charmingly bent comedy" and gives the movie a very thoughtful analysis), but it's given pretty close to the best placement a film review could ask for, above the fold in the Friday Weekend section.

I never would have guessed it from the ads.  Wonder if this is a case where a studio has a better film that they knew they had.

BK,

Could you let Mr Haines (Guy for the ladies!) know that his new cd is very much enjoyed and appreciated this side of the ocean and that, for me, the two tracks that stand out are:

MILLIONS OF MEN: oh, the mellow voice and perfect phrasing and Mr Schmidt's music and...

COWBOY WALTZ: I don't care for... cowboys, really, but do I care for that song!

Also, tell Mr Haines that, next time, he should do a duet with Mr Manilow... or with himself... which might be the same, come to think of it!! ;-)

I don't expect to have much time for movie watching this weekend, so only one Bollywood movie of the week..

AVALUKUENDRU ORU MANAM (1965)

This one is a bit different in that it is in the Tamil language rather then in Hindi. All of my Bollywood movies up to this point have been in Hindi. You can also find Bollywood films in Mayalam, Telugu, and a few other regional languages.

The Tamil films have a totally different set of film stars, of which I am not familiar with yet. I have listened to a few soundtracks of Tamil films and I almost prefer the music from Tamil and Telugu films as compared to the Hindi ones...unfortunately Tamil and Telugu films and CDs are not as easy to come by and are much more expensive.

Despite the B&W DVD cover, this movie is in color.

I took a good, long look at THE NAME OF THE ROSE last night. Fine dvd presentation from Warner. Overall, the film doesn't quite gel, it comes damned close, though. Sean Connery adds another multi-layered performance to his resume, as the Sherlockian William of Baskerville, a Franciscan monk investigating a series of deaths in a remote abbey in 13th or 14th Century Italy. I believe the number of deaths is taken down from the number of deaths in Umberto Eco's novel (it's been a while since I read the book). Fine support from Fellini-esque faces, including William Hickey and Ron Perlman. Christian Slater is very young, wow, is he young! Slater hadn't garnered the Nicholson urge which he would rely on in later performances. F. Murray Abraham has virtually a walk-on as a villainous Grand Inquisitor, but, differences with director Jean-Jacques Annaud might have had something to do with that. It took four writers to adapt Eco's novel into a straightforward film.

Today, I picked up used copies of SIN CITY, BEYOND THE SEA and the first two Austin Powers' movies.
Took a quick peek at SIN CITY, and I must say it looks very interesting. . .
Also ready to be fired up in the dvd player are:
Dario Argento's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
SHANE MACGOWAN AND THE POPES LIVE AT MONTREAUX
and so the DR elmoore doesn't feel totally alone, the dvd player also holds Kristen Bjorn's CARNIVAL IN RIO.  :-X

CD PLAYER holds:
Shane MacGowan Duets with Nick Cave and Sinead O'Connor
ALEXANDER by Vangelis
RUM, SODOMY & THE LASH by THE POGUES.

Hello one and all!  Yes, I have been E&T this past week.  It seems a lot longer.  I can totally understand DR Elmore and Vixmom’s feelings.

To all those I missed having Birthdays and were in need of vibes, I do apologize.  I sincerely hope that you had a very happy day and that all problems are on their way to being resolved.

A special “I’m sorry” to DR Ron Pulliam that I didn’t get to give you my condolences about Miss Vicky.  There are no words to take the pain away from losing a beloved pet, I’ll only say that someday you WILL see her again.

Let me tell you all some of my good news.

I am now the proud owner of Tivo!  I already LOVE it and don’t know how I lived without it.  Best Buy had a sale for the receiver.  It was a hundred dollars WITH a hundred dollar rebate! You can’t beat that price!

I have it set to get a season pass of “Battlestar: Galactica” (I don’t like that show but I can’t stop wanting to know what’s happening), “The 4400” and “Lost”.  I’m excited about getting to see “Lost” again.  I really like that show and was crushed when it was moved to the ten o’clock slot.

I feel like I will finely be able to see the shows that everyone is talking about but I can’t stay awake for!

DR Jennifer, Thank you for telling me about Michael Ball and WIW.  I very much doubt I will be able to see him or the show unless he and it runs through next year.

I received the sweetest card today from DR OzDerick.  I’m truly touched that he would take the time to write me.  I  wish him all the best and want him to save his strength to get well soon.   :)

FJL: Or maybe, just maybe, the NY Times has gone as downhill as the rest of the country, which I believe is true.

vixmom: No, you are not being a curmudgeon - television is shameful in the regard you speak of.  The media and television is responsible in a major way for the downfall of civilization as we know it - you can thank TV for every obnoxious trend we have to suffer through, especially with young girls.  I read today a review of the new musical Princesses.  They've been sending their little shills all over the Internet to try and tell everyone this is the next thing - I would hate to tell you what some of Mr. Zippel's quoted lyrics are - and if that's what little girls are talking about then the world is over.  And you can thank TV and Paris Hilton and every fifteen minutes of fame TV icon for it all.
Title: Re:YOU KNOW THE MANTRA
Post by: bk on August 19, 2005, 04:46:19 PM
Oh, and Princesses would like to think of itself as a family musical.  I guess it's wonderful to have young girls talk about waxing the inside of their rear end.  That's just the height of wit and sophistication - I have no doubt it's true for many young girls, and for that, as I've said, we can thank their "role models" and their parents for allowing them to have said role models.

This bit of news seems to be following too closely on the heels of rumors at the end of season 1 that actress Cross was gay.

And I just got my car out of my local garage...where they did only 3/4ths of what I hoped they'd do.

I got the essentials, but they said I'll need new brakes and a new timing belt in the next couple of months.  I was very specific about replacing brakes and belts if they looked worn enough to be replaced in next few months.

I took the day off in order to get preventive maintenance done...told them to replace everything that needs replacing or will need replacing in near future.

The mechanic said he didn't want my bill to be too high.

I thanked him for that...and for the call to AAA I'd have to make when the timing belt goes south on me on a freeway in the next few weeks.

sigh.

Sunset Boulevard

What do you get when you strip away all those top heavy sets and gimmicks?
You get an opportunity for a great performances.  Judi Connelli is without doubt the best Norma I have seen or heard.
David Campbell is wonderful on stage. He has presence and retains his own voice. He is not at all interchangeable with all those "leading men" out there. He makes the role of Joe his own. Last year I saw his Billy Bigalow and was somewhat apprehensive about him tackling that one.  He added a new vulnerability to Billy and was totally convincing. As Joe he also had the ability to show some other aspects of what I've always found to be an unlikeable and opportunistic character.

Ms Connelli is a treasure. Absolutely the right voice for the role and the acting talent to go with it. Standing ovations for the stars. and that is not really usual here.

There was another problem with the stripping away of the majestic sets with which we were familiar. Focus is on the music!!  There is just so much repetition. Is this ALW's worst show for this.  You just keep thinking "on not that theme again".
Lyrics - how any time do we really need to hear someone say "new ways to dream" and "surrender".  Now I know why I don't play the Cast recordings!

At least I can say I saw some wonderful performances. The actress playing Betty was a little shrill at times (I love Judy Kuhn's versions of the songs). The ensemble was great. Excellent diction on all those dialogue/patter songs. the actor/singing playing Max was also great.

Damn! Damn! Damn!  Several weeks ago I sent DRGinny as a lark the CD of the dreadful MARIE CHRISTINE, and now Paypal think her address is my primary one.  As a result, I believe everything I purchased around 4 hours ago is being sent to her home in Ohio!

This day has been such crap and it's not nearly over.  I want to kick ass and kill.  I want to throw things and break windows.  I am not happy.

First, I thank you for "repeating" the information and for giving out so much detail.

Second, I LOVE David Hobson...I have the DVD of the Aussie producton of Baz Luhrmann's "La Boheme" in which he sang Rodolfo and a separate CD recording that came out a year or so back.

Third, sometimes I need a break from the internet.  Sometimes it lasts a day, and sometimes it lasts several days.  As inconceivable as it seems, I am not always good about "catching up" on everything that has been posted while "in absentia."  My bad.

Oh, and Princesses would like to think of itself as a family musical.  I guess it's wonderful to have young girls talk about waxing the inside of their rear end.  That's just the height of wit and sophistication.

I must have somehow missed that lyric last week!  In my opinion, the "questionable" lines (for ages 13 and up) could be counted on one hand, and I didn't think it too far out there to call it a family musical.  Not for the little little ones, perhaps, but...

Question for the musicians out there.

The opening themes of "Sunset Boulevard" always seem to be going to morph into Rachminoff's Piano Concerto #2.

I know ALW is prone to steal from composers but I usually just have the "familiar" link and don't know the source. Is it just my "ear" that hears the Rachmaninoff connection.

I just never found SUNSET BLVD. a movie that required a song score added to it. I didn't find that the story was enhanced in any way by the songs, and the score certainly didn't contain enough variety to hold my interest even with superb performers.

So, TOP HAT was a treat. The image looks for the most part superb. I noticed a couple of faint scratches (didn't last very long), three definite signs of print damage, and two weird instances of a scene starting with this grainy, out of focus shot that then a second later became smooth and clear. I've never seen that happen before.

At any rate, every song in the movie is a classic, helpful since the mistaken identity plot gets a bit tiresome after you've seen the movie a few dozen times. I love Ginger's dress for "The Piccolino."

This was the first time I had viewed the 25th Anniversary HOLY GRAIL set, and those Pythons have been fiddling with the movie. There's a new pre-credit sequence, and I noticed a couple of bits I had no memory of whatsoever during the film. SOme of the outdoor shots are as crisp and clean as I've ever seen them. HOLY GRAIL has always looked rather muddy and soft on video, but this is by far the best video presentation it's ever had. I chose the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack iinstead of the original mono. There wasn't a tremendous amount they could do to beef up that original mono, but the surround effects and music that were added fit just fine for me. I'm sure the commentaries would be fun, too, but we watched just the movie and none of the special features on the second disc.

Not too bad today thanks DTM.  Had a great night at SUNSET BLVD with DR Tomovoz (et. partner Colin) last night.  Looking forward to catching a concert version of RAGTIME in 2 weeks and then a fully staged produciton of PARADE after that.

BTW - did I ever tell anyone I hate show tunes?   ;D

Yes. And when my dvd set of THE MUPPETS arrives I'll be able to understand exactly what Mr Swedish Chef has to say.

Oh and for the record (and if anyone is remotely intersted in what is happening in musical theatre in Australia) ....

DIRTY DANCING: LIVE ON STAGE has broken box office records.  During the Sydney season a total of 20 tickets were not sold.  So far in Melbourne, only 1 performance has had 12 vacant seats.  Apart from that the HOUSE FULL sign is up every show.  (controversy .. it was not nominated for any of the Helpmann << similar to Tonys >> awards!!!!!!!!!!!!)

dreary old THE LION KING is playing to full houses as well.  I saw it in Sydney and was not at all moved or involved in any of the character's plights.  Absolutely no focus on the emotions of characters.  Just a lot of visual flair.  Same here in Melbourne.

Rumour has it we will get AVENUE Q next year (a co-production between Melbourne Theare Co and The Frost Organisation) and looks like WICKED will open in Sydney mid 2006.  Possible talk of MARY POPPINS here but most likely not till 2007.  And SPAMALOT looks like a strong contender for a spot in the 2006 calendar.

** sigh **

That really makes me smile. Last summer, when we came to NYC, one of my friends chose to go to cAROLINE OR CHANGE instead of AVENUE Q. Of course, we all came raving back to the room about AVENUE Q, and he felt obligated to talk about what a masterpiece CAROLINE was, much more so than any puppet show could possibly be. One listen to the cast recording of CAROLINE convinced me I made the right decision.

I would think CAROLINE would be a difficult show to mount and a difficult show to sell to the public.

CAROLINE OR CHANGE?  Isn't that the one with Malcolm Getz as the gay guy who was the illustrator who became straight in the second season so that he coud date Caroline (because nobody liked Eric Lutz) and .................

Oh, I guess that was CAROLINE IN THE CITY

Yes, I will be chomping at the bit to find out about RED GARTERS!  What a fun movie!

Betty Garrett - just don't get her message.  She irritates me - maybe on a recording, it would be different.  I guess she can blame the blacklist, but I would imagine there weren't a LOT of producers lined up to feature her in anything in particular.

I think anyone would have a right to blame a blacklist -- btw, the reported words were not hers! -- whether they're talented or not!
Anyone!

Know the story about Jerome Robbins???

George, run do not walk to eBay or amazon, and pick up Rachmaninov's Second Symphony.  Tell them Bruce-O sent you - you'll be glad you did.  The third movement is one of the most glorious pieces of music you will ever hear.   It's been swiped by Mr. Carmen, by Don Sebesky, and by Mr. Manilow.

Thanks for the recommendation!  I'll get it, but I'm actually going to request it from the library where I work.  Much cheaper that way. ;)

If someone could just kill me now, I'd be grateful. While I was talking out boy problems with my roommate (her problems with a boy, specifically), I missed a phone call from the Greek who apparently is at a "special interest" bar in Manhattan. At said bar, the Greek heard the theme song to the Golden Girls and just "had to call me."

JUST HAD TO CALL ME BECAUSE THEY HEARD A SONG THAT REMINDED THEM OF ME?? Who does that?!?! No one has ever done that to/for me before. What does it mean? Why am I overanalyzing? I'm so confused and it's the little stuff like this that makes me even moreso. If I were a braver man, I'd approach the subject with the Greek, but I'd like to be the one to be chased for once, which is exactly what my roommate and I hashed out for nearly two hours about HER weird relationship. Am I crazy for thinking that the Greek is somewhat interested and/or thinking about me? I know that I've never just called up a "friend" because I heard a song that reminded me of them.

God, give me the strength to accept the things that I cannot change. There's more to that mantra (or womantra), but I can't remember it.

Perhaps "The Greek" was just thanking you being a friend DR Jason.  Perhaps a "drink" is what he needs for the courage. Perhaps the suggestion that you accompany him to said special interest bar may be fruitful.
There is that Oscar nominated song from 1959 "Strange Are The Ways Of Love". Of course it lost out to "High Hopes". We can read mesages in everything in times of heightened emotion!

Who can explain it? Who can tell you why? Maybe the Greek was just calling to "thank me for being a friend" as the song goes...I don't know. All I know is, I think about the Greek when I wake up and I think about the Greek when I go to bed and I think about the Greek pretty much every moment in between and it's driving me mad.

I was invited to join the Greek and friend at the "special interest" establishment tonight, but I declined so as to allow the Greek and friend to catch up and spend some quality time together. I would have felt weird tagging along.

Jason, as much as I hate that unrequited love crap, I must say I like ... being in love ... having a crush ... whatever.  If nothing else, at least enjoy the possibilities, the potential, and don't worry about if it might not happen.  Until you get a definitive answer, there's always hope! ;D
