I did manage to see TOP HAT tonight in between visits from one friend who stopped by for a drink (he had two) and another friend who came over to watch MONTY PYTHON/HOLY GRAIL with me. More about those later.

Serge Gainsbourg (who??) loved to steal from Rachmaninoff and other classic composers too!

To know that "waffles" sounds like "woffles" in Oz baffles me!

I wish I could wolf down some waffles now!

I just never found SUNSET BLVD. a movie that required a song score added to it. I didn't find that the story was enhanced in any way by the songs, and the score certainly didn't contain enough variety to hold my interest even with superb performers.

I'd rather see the movie any day.

So, TOP HAT was a treat. The image looks for the most part superb. I noticed a couple of faint scratches (didn't last very long), three definite signs of print damage, and two weird instances of a scene starting with this grainy, out of focus shot that then a second later became smooth and clear. I've never seen that happen before.

At any rate, every song in the movie is a classic, helpful since the mistaken identity plot gets a bit tiresome after you've seen the movie a few dozen times. I love Ginger's dress for "The Piccolino."

I was watching the documentary on the disc when my friend arrived for MONTY PYTHON so I will re-watch and finish it tomorrow.

Sorry for no page 9 dance. Again, I'm not at a scanner to be able to put one on-line. I'll post two tomorrow.

This was the first time I had viewed the 25th Anniversary HOLY GRAIL set, and those Pythons have been fiddling with the movie. There's a new pre-credit sequence, and I noticed a couple of bits I had no memory of whatsoever during the film. SOme of the outdoor shots are as crisp and clean as I've ever seen them. HOLY GRAIL has always looked rather muddy and soft on video, but this is by far the best video presentation it's ever had. I chose the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack iinstead of the original mono. There wasn't a tremendous amount they could do to beef up that original mono, but the surround effects and music that were added fit just fine for me. I'm sure the commentaries would be fun, too, but we watched just the movie and none of the special features on the second disc.

And with all the visitors tonight, I didn't get around to the kitchen floor either, so that's another fun job I get to use my Saturday to accomplish.

Has anyone brought up "Hail Knight of the Waffle Countenance" from MAN OF LA MUNCHA?

I know, no groaners allowed on HHW.  Sorry.

Speaking of Serge, I just watched Charlotte Gainsbourg in a film.

George, run do not walk to eBay or amazon, and pick up Rachmaninov's Second Symphony.  Tell them Bruce-O sent you - you'll be glad you did.  The third movement is one of the most glorious pieces of music you will ever hear.   It's been swiped by Mr. Carmen, by Don Sebesky, and by Mr. Manilow.

Oh to be able to Groan.
I'll have to groan and bear it I guess.
I'd bare it but that's altogether another site.

Hail night at the waffle counter - Nance!

BK - Any advance tip on whether this weekend's trivia contest is going to be a straighforward one or a treacherous one?  I'm trying to plan my weekend, and of course HHW Trivia takes precedence.  :)

Quite a busy day, and now I'm exhausted. Better jump off the internet now and head for bed.

Good night, all.

Charlotte is very talented and is maturing very well as an actress!

A few months ago, she came to the hotel and asked me for cigarettes, something we don't carry here!

Hello td. Mr Campbell gave Joe some humour and light. Not just the acidic "wit" of the Hollywood wannabes.  He really delivered lines with a complete freshness. IMHO - a great talent. I just wish he'd leave the pop stuff alone!!

Thanks for the mini review, tom. . .david HAS to be talented, we share the same birthday.  ;)

So do ALW and SS! Does that prove or disprove that theory?
Of course there is the JRand and Jose birthdate too!!

I'm not sure where this is leading.
Dinah Washington died on my my birthday. Patty Duke, Jane Birkin and I share a birthday.

Yes,... and... -- we've talked about that some time ago here -- who was Miss Birkin's first husband????

-- BK should NOT answer that one! ;)

Not to beat a dead horse, but I just checked rottentomatoes.com, and THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN has an 89% favorable-review rating, according to their analysis.   Haven't seen it yet, and the waxing hair-removal scene in the commercial makes me cringe, but I can't wait for the musical virgin.
