Good morning, all!  Another night of very bizarre dreams, the strangest leaving me with the question of why Stephen Cole, librettist of the musical NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, is visiting me at my family's house in Ohio.  But when it was time to return to New York with my father (!) and DR Rodzinski (what happened to Mr Cole?), it was impossible because my brothers hadn't repaired my car.  This is clearly the result of my turning DR Rodzinski down for dinner last night, but I fear there's another cycle of strange dreams returning.  No Wonderland material here, alas.

I'm off to Toyland this morning.  I need to begin libretto adjustments and edit a few numbers.

TOD:  The ones I want to win never do, so I'm going to sit back and watch the parade.

Hello all!   Yesterday was a LONG day. I worked all day - in part planning a trip to SF for a seminar the last week in May....Will you be around DR RON?

And then I rented a carpet cleaner for a whopping $19 and cleaned the carpets in the old house.   This morning the handyman will work in the basement, I'll clean the bathroom and kitchen - then all I have to do is clean the basement and I will be TOTALLY DONE!!!!!  Hoo and Ray!    I gave myself a month and today is day 31, since I got the house and day 21 since I moved in, so I'm actually on schedule, it just seems like it's take a lot longer.

I'm off to meet the handy man....laters

Well. totally done with that house, I still have Mucho to do in this one, but there's no hurry for that.

BTW_ the plumber sent his bill and charged me for installing something I installed.  He promised to cut me slack on the bill and didn't. He will be receiving a phone call and a strongly worded letter and the bill needs to be fixed.  And his company will never be allowed in my house again.

Hmmm.....well.....here are my hopes....but I expect to see them dashed on the rocks, with a twist.

Actor - David Straitharn OR Joaquin Phoenix
Actress - Dench
Picture - Good Night and Good Luck
S Actor - Matt Dillon
S Actress - Rachel Weisz
Director - Clooney
Original Screenplay - Good Night and Good Luck
Adapted Screenplay - Brokeback Mountain

And Hollywood being the left wing, bleeding heart, pinko Commie town it is, I may get a couple of my wishes.

Having seen almost none of the films in contention this year, I really have no predictions about the Oscars.  But Brokeback Mountain seems to be a front-running fav with most people and if we are to believe the barometer of other award shows.

Speaking of Brokeback, I saw a fun motel sign on Ventura Blvd.  when I was in LA last week.  It said:

"They ain't cowboys; they're sheepherders."

Well, I haven't seen any of the nominated films this year. My sister Rikki has been picking them off, one by one, and only has CRASH left to see - which i think she's gonna try to find today. gotta admire her. She also reads steadily, so she can intelligently discuss most of the books on Best Seller lists with other readers - or at lease, know what the heck they're talking about. I'm still watching TOP HAT and HARVEY  for the fiftieth time. I'm still reading obscure novels of dead authors or the unknown plays of unknown playwrights. Sometimes a decade-old Grisham novel... although within the last year I did read The Da  Vinci Code and A Million Little Pieces. I liked those a lot.

DR CP - now that you are "in the area" - you and the DW might think about a trip up to Greencastle, home of DePauw University and close to many covered bridges....stay a couple of nights at the Walden Inn and see a show at the Putnam County Playhouse....I am directing DEATH BY CHOCOLATE in July....

I do think the CAPOTE guy will win best actor - too early and too little caffeine to dredge his name up yet... seems it's "his turn" and he IS a wonderful actor, admired by his colleagues for his long and steady stream of good character work.

She works full time (nurse) on a research project, and is also On Call 4 nights a week... she has a 45 day escrow, and has to be outa there by March 30. I said I would help out. But, 8 Ayem?!?!?

Anyhow, that's why I'm up at 6, sucking caffeine...

Saturday greetings!  My much-needed 3-day weekend started with a wonderful concert last night at Miami University.  The featured artists were Dave Brubeck (age 85!) and his quartet.  In the first half they performed with the Miami University Jazz Ensemble, concluding with Brubeck hits "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Take Five."  For the second half, those groups were joined by the Miami University Symphony Orchestra and combined choral groups, numbering almost 300.  They did selections from some of Brubeck's sacred compositions and his settings of 2 Langston Hughes poems.

Today, I'm puttering at home and tomorrow we'll see the touring Thoroughly Modern Millie in our Dayton Broadway series.

TOD - I will be here, of course, for the HHW Oscar bash, but have seen none of the Best Picture nominees and only a smattering of nominees in other categories.  There's a lot of buzz in the Cincinnati media over native son George Clooney's nominations.

I'm up, I'm up... I think...

I seem to have a work hangover today.  Yesterday was so intense, I feel kind of zonked today.  But for all the madness, I can't wait for Monday.

This weekend, I have to get out the invites to my sister's bachelorette party, do my laundry (desperate situation, esp. considering most of my clothes don't fit me anymore, so the "bottom of the barrel" clothes are really not cool), do my taxes, and maybe go in to work for a couple hours just to get organized and re-arrange Nikole's (the former assistant) desk.  I didn't touch it on Friday because I didn't want to be a usurper and make her feel resentful; but I want to be ready for next week and I just don't feel ready at this point.

I have seen four of the five Best Picture nominees (have not seen MUNICH), and I could live with BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, or CAPOTE as Best Picture.

News speculations have BROKEBACK as the favorite with CRASH as the dark horse and one most able to pull off an upset. I don't think it's nearly as good as the other three, but being an LA picture, it might resonate more with Academy voters than BROKEBACK does.
Title: Re:VAMPING
Post by: Matt H. on March 04, 2006, 07:49:17 AM
As for the performance awards, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Reese Witherspoon seem to have the momentum for Best Actor and Best Actress though I suppose Heath Ledger and Felicity Huffman might surprise and pull off upsets.

Hoffman's is an astonishing impersonation of Capote, but I honestly thought Ledger's creating a character from scratch was pretty astounding, too. If I had a vote, I'd pick Ledger, but I think Hoffman will win.

Just went to www.oscars.com (http://www.oscars.com) for the printable list of nominees.  Here are the ones I've seen:

The Constant Gardener
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
March of the Penguins
Memoirs of a Geisha
Star Wars:  Episode III...

DH Richard saw a couple of the others and we have several on our Netflix list, but this has not been much of a movie-going year for us.
Title: Re:VAMPING
Post by: Matt H. on March 04, 2006, 07:57:25 AM
In the supporting races, momentum seems to be with George Clooney and Rachel Weitz. Both have larger roles than their fellow nominees, so that sometimes helps. I do think Weitz is the most deserving; she makes an indelible impression early in THE CONSTANT GARDENER and then once she's gone, you continue to think about her throughout the movie.

Clooney isn't going to win for Best Director or Best Screenplay, so this may be his consolation prize plus he's gotten very good reviews for his SYRIANA work.

However, I'm thinking Paul Giamatti might sneak in here for CINDERELLA MAN. Giamatti failed to get nominated the previous two years for either AMERICAN SPLENDOR or SIDEWAYS, both of which shocked much of Hollywood, so this may be payback time for him, and we all know the Oscars quite often work that way (witness the undeserved wins for Elizabeth Taylor in BUTTERFIELD 8 or Al Pacino in SCENT OF A WOMAN to name just two examples).

Best Actor - Philip Seymour Hoffman
Best Actress - Reese Witherspoon
Best Supporting Actor - Paul Giamatti
Best Supporting Actress - Rachel Weitz
Best Director - Ang Lee

My own personal choices:

Best Picture - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Best Actor - Heath Ledger
Best Actress - Felicity Huffman
Best Supporting Actor - Jake Gyllanhaal
Best Supporting Actress - Rachel Weitz
Best Director - Ang Lee

It Is sort of interesting from a lawsuit strategy perspective that the producers of CRASH who felt wronged by the other producers seemed to have waited until after all the Oscar voters ballots were in to officially file their complaints.  (Or did I misread the news on that? In any event, the NY Times didn't carry the big story about it until after the ballot deadline.)

DR JRand, I read this morning something that will interest you and something that you asked about a few weeks ago.

The next release of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN will pair the episodes from Season 3 AND Season 4. This release is slated for June. There were 13 episodes filmed for each of those two seasons (all in color).

Even though the color shows are more juvenile than the earlier black and white years, there are still some very entertaiuning shows in this set including "Geat Caesar's Ghost," "The Lucky Cat," "The Seven Souvenirs," "Jimmy the Kid," "The Girl Who Hired Superman," the Joi Lansing-starring "The Wedding of SUperman," and my favorite "Dagger Island."

There has been so much talk of CRASH coming from behind and winning the award (BROKEBACK has won far and away more Best Pic awards from various groups than CRASH) that I think the "wronged" producers simply now think the picture might win and want a piece of the pie.

CRASH winning the SAG award for Best Ensemble acting is what started all this talk of an upset. However, SIDEWAYS won the Best Ensemble last year over MILLION DOLLAR BABY, yet BABY went on to win the Oscar.

Of course he did; I didn't mean to imply that the mimickry is all there is to his performance. But he did have the original as a jumping off point. That's all I meant.

Well, I don't know many actors aside from Rich Little who would take "impersonation" as a compliment. But what's interesting is the question of whether it is easier to play a role based on a known historical entity or create the character "from scratch."

In a way, Hoffman had more work cut out because he had to overcome people's preconceived notions of Capote to build his performance. He had to worry about taking it beyond the realm of imitation into something more. Higher risk, if you ask me. People can easily say, "That's not how Capote was," or "That's an imitation." Ledger didn't have that particular challenge.

Since most people never had a chance to know the real Capote, I don't think that's a viable argument. We remember him now from MURDER BY DEATH mostly (made more than 15 years after the events of CAPOTE) in which he's "supposedly" acting someone not himself. Otherwise, it's vague recollections of a half-drugged writer on talk shows that don't get repeated much. In fact, I had younger friends who didn't even know who Capote was at all, so to them, his acting choices including looks, mannerisms, and vocal pitch were as much an acting choice as Ledger's.

Now I'm not sure what you're saying, MattH, because originally you called it an astonishing impersonation, vs. Ledger's astonishing creating something from scratch. Now you're saying that Capote is not well-known enough for that to matter. (Despite the fact there was a long-running Broadway and touring play that gave renewed life to his persona and mannerisms).

The Capote persona is well-known to many, his mannerisms are so strong, there is every chance they could overwhelm any attempt to create a character.

For those of you who get the Independent Film Channel - The Independent Spirit Awards are on live and unedited today at two. Worth TIVO-ing. Much better than the Oscars, IMHO. Totally casual and crazy and quite unscripted. And this year, with most of the same players as the Oscars. The nightime rerun on AMC (or one of the other movie channels - can't remember) is edited and not as much fun. Will return to lurk later today. Thanks again for the wishes!

TOD - I've seen all of movies nominated for best picture and best director
I haven't seen Hustle and Flow, so I didn't see Terrence Howard's performance for best actor, but I've seen the rest
I"m planning to see Transamerica today or tomorrow, but I haven't seen Mrs. Henderson Presents or Pride and Prejudice so I'm a little lacking in the best actress category
I've seen all the best supporting actor and all the best supporting actress except June Bug with Amy Adams

And only because my name has been mangled more times than I care to remember in playbills and programs...

It's "Rachel Weisz" - no "t" in the last name.  -Although the pronunciation of "Weitz" is basically the "translation" of "Weisz".  ;)

And "Jake Gyllenhaal" - And I wonder how much pressure he had early on in his career to change his last name to something "simpler".

*And I keep wanting to add extra "n's" to both Hoffman(n) and Huffman(n).

What are they rockin' out to on the headphones?

I'm not sure.  Maybe it was the demos for Lestat?  ;)

However, my sister-in-law sent that pic to me with the caption, "How I get my peace and quiet at home now."

:)

They both love music, and I'm sure the headphones have cut down on the usual cacophony in that household.  -Which is a very good thing right now since Veronica, my sister-in-law, is expecting her third child in a few months.  -Yeah, another niece or nephew on the way!

While reading Page 2, I came across the following exchange:

I just ate some cereal that MBarnum introduced me to when he was out here: FiberOne. I mix it with cinnamon Life.

That FiberOne is very good for you DR Rodzinski! LOL!

When are they coming out with the sequel? FiberTwo?

Which was immediately followed by:

It's out on DVD already if that makes a difference to you.

Who I would like to win.....

Best Picture - Capote or Good Night and Good Luck - Brokeback Mountain was ok,  but it wasn't my favorite, and they were sheepherders - there isn't a cow in the movie

Best Director - hmmm not sure.

Best Actress - I want to say Felicity Huffman, but I haven't seen it yet. Reece Witherspoon was good and I can see why she's nominated but not having seen all the others, I was a little surprised she's been winning everything.

Best Actor - Philip (only one "l" I missed that before) Seymour Hoffman - I thought he was incredible - he absolutely became Truman Capote.  When I heard he was playing Capote and having seen a lot of his other work, I just couldn't imagine it, but he blew my socks off.

Best Supporting Actor - I would pick David Strathairn - I loved his Murrow

Best Supporting Actress - I think there were some great performances here. I loved Frances McDormand in North Country, but I always love Frances McDormand, Rachael Weisz, however kept me intrigued and interested in wanting to know why her character was murdered,  and she had that something that I can't describe - I would give it to her.

Well. totally done with that house, I still have Mucho to do in this one, but there's no hurry for that.

BTW_ the plumber sent his bill and charged me for installing something I installed.  He promised to cut me slack on the bill and didn't. He will be receiving a phone call and a strongly worded letter and the bill needs to be fixed.  And his company will never be allowed in my house again.

I would give him a big earful...

Sending courage and patience vibes to DR Joy!!

I hope all goes well next week! .... and with your sister's shower!

As for my Oscar Picks...

Out of the major contenders, I saw "Brokeback Mountain" first, and then caught up on the rest of them.  -And most of them I've seen in the past couple of weeks.  Seeing the so-called front-runner first and then the so-called underdogs has been very interesting in regards to the awards race and speculations.  It really does seem like their could be a lot of surprises tomorrow night, at least in regards to a "Brokeback Sweep".  -Remember what happened with "The Color Purple"?

Interesting about what you saw first. I saw CRASH first, then GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, then SYRIANA, then BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, then CAPOTE, then MUNICH.  To me, saying that you really like MUNICH feels like cheering when the answer is the Hindenberg and you get it right.

All the best picture nominees are pretty depressing this year, actually

DR JRand - I meant to respond to you about this yesterday...

Sunday In the Park with George is truly a wonderful work of art.  Not just musical theatre, but Art.  And I can honestly say, it was very pivotal in my choosing to pursue a career in the arts.  Seeing that show during my final year in high school, when it seemed like the weight of the world - and my family(!) - was on my shoulders to do the right thing, to go down the right path, the set the right example...  There is a great comfort knowing that if my efforts make just a small contribution to the whole, that it is still a contribution.  That it was and is still worth it.  Worth all the disappointment, frustration, sorrow... and happiness, joy and beauty.

Profound and life-changing.  I'm so glad you're e-Bay investment has had such a wonderful return.

*DR elmore also mentioned "Yoo-Hoo"...  When I was working on the Arena Stage production, we had access to the archived materials at the Library of Congress, as well as some materials that Mr. Sondheim shared with us.  Truly fascinating stuff.  And the page of sketches for the opening motif... all the various trial and error permutations before, "White.  A blank page or canvas." found it's musical cue.

MY HANDY MAN (Andy Razaf / Eubie Blake)
Ethel Waters - 1928

Whoever said a good man is hard to find
Positively, absolutely sure was blind
I've found the best man there ever was
Here's just some of the things that my man does

Why he shakes my ashes, greases my griddle
Churns my butter and he strokes my fiddle
My man is such a handy man (oh yes he is)

He threads my needle, creams my wheat
Heats my heater and he chops my meat
My man is such a handy man

Now I don't care if you believe it or not
He's so good to have around
And when my furnace gets too hot
He's right there and turns my damper down

Why for everything he's got a scheme
You oughta see that new stuff he uses on my machine
That man is such a handy man (he's God's gift girls)

Why he flaps my flapjacks, cleans off my table
Feeds my horses out in my stable
That man is such a handy man, mmm yeah

Sometimes he's up long before the dawn
Busy trimmin' the rough edges off my front lawn
Yeah that man is such a handy man

Why you know he never has a single word to say
No, not while he's working hard
And I wished that you could see the way
He handles my front yard

eah you know my ice don't get a chance to melt away
Cause he sees that I get that fresh piece every day
My man, my man is such a handy man And I ain't kiddin'!

...And "Finishing the Hat" and "Lesson No. 8" are my favorite songs from the show.  Dramatically and lyrically, they are devastating.  Georges and George want to connect, but can't.  We all want to "finish the hat".  And we all have those times when we find ourselves missing... ourselves.

My Handy Man Ain't Handy No More

Once I used to brag about my handy man,
but I ain't braggin' no more
Somethin' strange has happened to my handy man,
he's not the man he was before
Wish somebody could explain to me,
about this dual personality

He don't perform his duties like he used to do,
he never hauls the ashes 'less I tell him to
Before he hardly gets to work he says he's through,
my handy man ain't handy no more

He's forgotten his domestic science,
and he's lost of his self-reliance
He won't make a single move unless he's told,
he says he isn't lazy, claims he isn't old
But still he sits around and lets my stove get cold,
my handy man ain't handy no more

Time after time, if I'm not right there at his heels,
he lets that poor horse in my stable miss his meals
There's got to be some changes 'cause each day reveals,
my handy man ain't handy no more

He used to turn in early and get up at dawn,
and full of new ambitions, he would trim the lawn
Now, when he isn't sleeping all he does is yawn,
my handy man ain't handy no more

Once he used to have so much endurance,
now, it looks like he needs life insurance
I used to brag about my handy man's technique,
around the house he was a perfect indoor sheik
But now the spirit's willing but the flesh is weak,
my handy man ain't handy no more

And here's why I hate reality TV.

I heard the following conversation on a show:

"Shut up."
"Why don't YOU shut up?"
"Hey, I am the only one who told you to your face that I don't like you."
"Well, that's really sad.  If you don't like me then just pretend like I don't exist and stay out of my face."
"Why don't you just shut up and then I CAN pretend like you don't exist."
"No, YOU shut up."
"Alcoholic bitch."

How is this entertainment, especially when the exact same conversation is repeated ad nauseum on most of these shows?  I wish this phase would go away and we could get back to paying writers who know how to write interesting dialogue, instead of unintelligent, shallow people saying inane and nasty things to each other.

I won't even name the reality show, because it could apply to almost any of them.

Oh, that's right, we were discussing Oscar Picks, so...

I really do think the major awards are up for grabs, and my picks are about 50/50 who I think and who I hope will win:

Writing (Original Screenplay) - "Good Night, And Good Luck"
Writing (Adapted Screenplay) - "Brokeback Mountain"
Actress in a Supporting Role - Rachel Weisz ("The Constant Gardener")
Actor in a Supporting Role - Paul Giamatti ("Cinderella Man")
Actress in a Leading Role - Felicity Huffman ("Transamerica")
Actor in a Leading Role - Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Capote")
Directing - "Brokeback Mountain"
Best Picture - "Good Night, And Good Luck"

And the following are more or less educated guesses.  The technical and music (song and score) awards could really go any way at this point, imho.

Animated Feature Film - "Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit"
Short Film - Animated - "The Moon and the Son: And Imagined Conversation"
Short Film - Live Action - "Our Time Is Up"
Documentary Feature - "March of the Penguins"
Documentary Short Subject    - "God Sleeps in Rwanda"
Foreign Language Film - "Joyeux Noel"

Art Direction - "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"
Cinematography - "Brokeback Mountain"
Costume Design - "Pride & Prejudice"
Film Editing - "The Constant Gardener"
Makeup - "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith"*
Sound - "War of the Worlds"*
Sound Editing    - "War of the Worlds"
Visual Effects   - "King Kong"*
Music (Score) - "Munich"
Music (Song)   "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" ("Hustle & Flow")**

*I wouldn't mind seeing "Narnia" take one of these awards.
**There were only three nominees for Best Song this year.  Hmm...

Anyone else interested in "joining" this:

It's Entertainment Weekly's "World's Largest Oscar Pool".  You can win a pass to the Red Carpet area for next year's Oscars.  However, you can also Create and Join a group, this way you and your friends can keep track of each other's predictions.

So...  I've started a "private" group called "HainesHisWay".  And the password is what our beloved leader, BK, calls all of us who get to bed before he does and don't post until the wee hours of the morning.  (all lower-case).

Well, to be fair, Jake's Jack Twist character was a rodeo cowboy. I can't remember if it was bulls or bronchos that he rode, but he WAS a cowboy.

David is in the Best Actor category.

I thought I had made my way through all of THE GREEN HORNET episodes that Encores plays on Friday and Saturday mornings (they only made a couple dozen of them during its one season), but since I hadn't seen them in awhile, I set the DVR to pick up this morning's entry, and lo and behold, I had NOT seen it. Peter Haskell was the villain, and it was such a treat to get to see a "new" episode of the show.

I got a new Critics' Choice DVD catalog (and a CD catalog, too) in the mail today, so I'll be perusing it a little later to see upcoming DVDs. Always a lot of fun to flip through these catalogs seeing what's new and what they're putting on sale.

Anyone else interested in "joining" this:

http://predict.oscar.go.com/predict/frontpage

It's Entertainment Weekly's "World's Largest Oscar Pool".  You can win a pass to the Red Carpet area for next year's Oscars.  However, you can also Create and Join a group, this way you and your friends can keep track of each other's predictions.

So...  I've started a "private" group called "HainesHisWay".  And the password is what our beloved leader, BK, calls all of us who get to bed before he does and don't post until the wee hours of the morning.  (all lower-case).

:)

I joined the group too. It was very easy. So far it's Jose and I....

You are right on both counts, I stand corrected.  Make that George Clooney for Best Supporting. Jack may have been a rodeo cowboy, but he also herded sheep

Catching up after a day at the office.  All this talk of handymen and repairmen reminds me of a favorite song from my childhood:

You got someone who loves you
You got someone who cares
You got someone to fix you up
If ever you need repairs

You got someone to take the time
To listen to your prayers
I got, you got, everybody do got
Someone who cares

I forget the rest of the song, though...  :)

Four banana, three banana, two banana, one

Two banana, four banana, one banana, three
Swingin' like a bunch on monkeys, hangin' from a tree

Back from CAPOTE.  The theatre was packed and very attentive.  I loved the cast, and I thought Dan Futterman's screenplay quite wonderful.  I now believe Hoffman will win the Oscar over Heath Ledger, still my first choice, because the performance is insightful and much more flamboyant than Ledger's, whose character is so repressed he can't verbalize a flamboyant scene.  Oscars usually go the the scenery chewer, I think, because a lot of the voters don't know what acting is: they're movie performers whose roles are patched together from takes - I saw Cher onstage - oy! - and a lot of the tv actors I see can really be considered "sincere"  actors. I think that when someone really "acts" in a classy movie with some style and flamboyance, well, they can appreciate that.  Subtlety is not in the Oscar vocabulary.

OK, not to be picky, but this was the description from a story about the Independent Spirit Awards

“Brokeback Mountain” is the story of two sheepherders who carry on a torrid gay love affair that they conceal from their families for years.

It would be the first explicit gay theme film to win the best-picture Oscar.

“Mostly ’Brokeback Mountain’ is about sheep,” said one of the film’s producers, Diana Ossana.

“So we want to thank our shepherd, Ang Lee,” said the film’s other producer, James Schamus.

Good evening!

I didn't have much chance to flip through the DVD catalog. I was busy setting up the laptop tomorrow so I can watch the Oscars and comment without leaving the room. Should be fun.

Cillaliz - Hope I didn't seem rude at 10:44 Eastern, 7:44 Pacific time.  I'm pretty sure I wasn't at the computer then???????  It's weird, sometimes it seems like my name is still up as being on the site when I'm not actually on the site.

Or did I leave Internet Explorer open and walk away?

And with this much to say, why am I not spreading this out over several posts?

Many mysteries.

Well, I probably misspoke - Ms. Ruehl won the Tony for LOST IN YONKERS, as did Ms. Worth. Still, most folk don't even know who she is I'll bet...

She also won the Oscar for THE FISHER KING. Miss Ruehl, that is.

I will do my best to pop in from time to time tomorrow evening. I have to work and that comes first.... However, if it is quiet, I can sneak in...

However here are my picks in the main categories

Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman - Capote
Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line
Best supporting actor: George Clooney - Syriana
Best supporting actress: Frances McDormand - North Country
Best Director - Ang Lee for Brokeback Mountain
Best Picture - Brokeback Mountain

I have not decided the others quite yet....

I expect they will be very tired when they return.  Are they downsizing?

Downsizing?  I'm not sure.

When they bought this house, they very much up-sized.  And all four sons were out of college and out of the house by then, so...

However, I do suspect they are looking for something a little smaller, and a bit more manageable.  Right now, there are three vacant bedrooms, and three(!) full baths that are not in active use.  And I believe my Mom has started thinking "smaller" too in regards to her need for furniture and other home decor.  Oh, and I believe my father is actually seriously thinking of retiring.  Finally.  I'm not sure if my Mom is considering giving up her job just yet.

But the big factor are the property taxes.  They got hit big this year.  Their house was valued at just over $500,000 last year.  This year, the tally came to $784,000!  They were happy with the increased assessment, but the accompanying property tax increase was not welcome.  Most of the property assessments in Fairfax County experienced the same seemingly exponential increase.

They're actually looking at some places in suburban Maryland - a good 45 minutes out from DC proper - which seems a bit too far out to me (in many ways).  I think they're going to end up staying in Virginia if they can find an agreeable area.  I heard Manassas mentioned.  And with the grandchildren nearby...  We'll see.

I actually suggested they look down in Richmond, since the property values down there are quite the bargain compared to Northern Virginia.  They could actually buy a nice place in The Fan, and a nice-sized house on the northside or southside of town for what they'll most likely get for this house.  :)

But I also think a two bedroom townhouse would suit their needs just fine right now.  Guess we'll find out soon enough.

I spent three dreary hours in DOGVILLE. I had no idea what this film was about. Just remember reading about it when it first came out as far as being unique.

Well, it's done a la OUR TOWN with minimal sets, all in a studio drawn town. Very allegorical and maddening to watch someone persecuted for almost three hours and take it nobly. I kept thinking I'd just delete it and be done with it, but I was curious if there would EVER be any retribution for the indignities she suffered. I found out, but it was a long, wearying journey to that end point.

Wonderful cast, though: Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Blair Brown, James Caan, Zeljko Ivanek, among others. Too bad they couldn't have been used in something more worthwhile.

I just got back from Playwrights Horizons. I saw Grey Gardens. Those of you in New York City (or coming back to New York City) should try to see it. Christine Ebersole gives a wonderful performance. It's a musical based on the documentary film about an aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy. The title comes from the name of the estate, Grey Gardens. It's funny and sad and touching and a little bit crazy all together. The book is by Doug Wright who wrote I Am My Own Wife. The music is by Scott Frankel and the lyrics are by Michael Korie. The show was sold out and they extended through April 9th. On the strength of Ebersole's performance alone I would say go see it. I don't think it can move to Broadway, at least right now, because there are no houses available, although I think it could move down the block to the Little Shubert, the new Off-Broadway house. That would be a good size theatre for the show. Other than the Helen Hayes, I think the other Broadway houses are too big for the show. It needs a smaller space.

Fred, by the way, when I was at PH, I looked at the alum picture taken in 2003 and there was Dear Skip in all his glory. What a crop of talent in that picture!

You didn't ask me, but I read in VARIETY that there had been two casts, so to cut expenses, they've cut it to 8 shows a week with one cast.

I just read the winners of the Independent Spirit Awards. No spoilers, but I'll just say that it was nice that the wealth was spread around to a lot of films. I have a feeling the Oscars are going to go that way tomorrow night, too. There won't be a big winner, I don't think.

A friend of mine went to the show last night, and they had a set malfunction, and ended up taking a four minute "pause" in the middle of the second act to get things working again.  Alas, the Times was there last night too.

What DR MattH - and "Variety" - said.

;)

*Although, some of the ensemble members were originally contracted to play all 10 shows.  -And got paid the appropriate "overtime" bump for the extra two shows.  Otherwise, the "swings" would fill in as needed/scheduled.

Cillaliz - Now I'll never be able to get this one out of my head either.  :)

{Refrain}
Tra la la, la la la la (4X)

One banana, two banana, three banana, four
Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more
Over hill and highway the banana buggies go
Comin' up to bring you the Banana Split show

{Bridge}
Makin' up a mess of fun
Makin' up a mess of fun
Lots of fun for ev'ryone

{Refrain}

Four banana, three banana, two banana, one
All bananas playin' in the bright warm sun
Flippin' like a pancake, popping like a cork
Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper an' Snork

{Refrain}

Two banana, four banana, one banana, three
Swingin' like a bunch on monkeys, hangin' from a tree
Hey there, ev'rybody, won't you come along and see
How much like Banana Splits ev'ryone can be

{Refrain, Bridge, Refrain}

My sister and I loved the Banana Splits!  I've had their album for years, but it's pretty old and not-so-gently used. ::) However, last year (a couple of years ago??), I bought a CD of the TV soundtrack.  I don't know if it's "legitimate" or not, but if it is, it's supposedly a limited (but not numbered) edition.  It does have good sound quality. ;D

Just finished CRASH...another fine contender for the Oscars. I am glad I didn't see it in the theater as I would have embarrassed myself...some of the movie is a bit emotional! LOL!

Well, now I have seem all but two of the Best Film nominations....I enjoyed all of them and will be happy no matter which one wins...that goes for the two that I did not yet see...from what I have heard they are also both quite worthy.

I had a great day hanging out with my friend Andy.  I met him after he finished his volunteer shift and we walked down to the village for brunch- with unlimited mimosas! We toodled around until we got to Soho and popped into a few stores to look for possible job fair outfits.  I didn't find anything that thrilled me but I did get some ideas about what to put together from my own closet.  Then we hopped the train back up to midtown and bought standing room tickets to see Sweeney Todd.  And we had just enough time to enjoy a martini before the show started.

The show was just as great the second time around.  It was my friend's first time seeing it and he seemed to really like it.  He wasn't familiar with the music or any of the plot twists so he was caught by surprise.

Also in attendance tonight were (in order that we spotted them) Kellie Martin, Adam Duritz (he's in some band or another and always seems to show up at broadway events) and Johnny Depp.  He was really tan and rather smaller than I expected.

I am going to give up stressing about an outfit for the job fair.  I used to interview people for a living, I guess I'm anxious about being on the other side for a change.  And also it could be that I'm slightly stressed that they only gave us a week's notice to prepare.  I should probably start channeling this attention into preparing my resume instead...

Pufnstuf was made by Sid and Marty Kroft, but was not part of the Kroft Supershow.
Seals and Crofts were a 70s duo who sang "Summer Breeze" and other pleasant hits.
The Banana Splits were a Hanna-Barbera production.
George that Banana Splits CD is not strictly legal, but it sure has some good tunes on there.

Dee was the good one and Andrea was the bad one.

On Days, she (Andrea's character Samantha) was the trouble maker.. Oddly I was never a fan of Dee's character of Marlena.. .I acutally cheered the day her character was shot! IMHO, Marlena existed...  I actually liked Samantha.

My fave characters from Classic Days is Jack, Steve, Kayla and Jennifer.  Classic Days is anything prior to August 1991...
