I'm glad those gentlemen have finally jumped on the too dark bandwagon, all these years later. I've been complaining about digital projection and its dim image for years and years. I simply will not go to any theater projecting digitally unless they lie about it and I'm tricked. When I saw the third to last Harry Potter film projected digitally at the Chinese Theater that was it - it was hideous looking and a travesty and, of course, digital. For me, it has little to do with the 3D lens problem. And, as Ebert points out (better late than never), even 35mm equipment is not a guarantee of proper brightness. Frankly, I miss the old carbon arc light source for projectors, which provided a very bright blu-ish image and for anyone who'd ever seen IB Technicolor projected with carbon arcs that's what we all grew up with and fell in love with. The switch to Xenon also provided a bright picture if the lamps were at full capacity, albeit with a yellower tinge.
