Title: ARTHUR MURRAY TAUGHT ME DANCING IN A HURRY

Well, you've read the notes, you've danced in a hurry (thanks to Arthur Murray), and now it is time for you to post until the dancing cows come home.

I just watched the new Babs promo video. You know it's Barry Gibb from the first few seconds!! Babs still wants to be a pop star.  If you like "Guilty" you'll like this one too. At least it's not David Foster!!
Of course I've pre-ordered it!

I watched Swimming Pool last night and I realized I’m still a fan of Charlotte Rampling. She was elegant as usual and good at performing  a role who lives stoically and rationally and obsessively in the film.

Good Morning to my A.M. friends, although it's not A.M. where some of you reside (what a convoluted sentence).

Jose said:

...And I'm due back in at Penn Station at 2:25 Sunday afternoon.  I at least want to see balloons when I get up to the Concourse Level.  ;D

Sorry, no can do, even though we close to your arrival point. We will be on a plane coming back from the Detroit Airport as you arrive in Penn Station. Next time!

So much to think about regarding dances. I will have to answer later.

We've just been watching the PBS "Broadway - the American Musical".  I did not know of the 1999 film "The Cradle will Rock". Any comments out there? Should I check it out?

I'm trying to imagine an episode of The Muppet Show with both Valerie Harper and Ethyl Merman guesting, together.

If any group could pull off such a pairing, the Muppets could, but my mind is still boggleing.

Good morning, all!  DRTomovoz, the story of the musical's getting seen by the public is a great story, which John Houseman told everyone and everywhere, and it's worth seeing if only for the politics alone.  That said, I have to admit that THE CRADLE WILL ROCK has always sounded to me like second-rate THREEPENNY OPERA, and I much prefer Blitzstein as a translator than as the composer of REGINA and THE CRADLE WILL ROCK.  However, I love his score to JUNO.

I'm still nursing my wounds over the DARLING OF THE DAY affair, but I did spend  a lovely "personal" day yesterday puttering about the apartment.  I proofread a couple of scores for the Jeff Harnar-Shauna Hicks "Mickey-Judy" show, which is being done in concert in September, talked to DRs Jose and MBarnum, and generally kept to myself.  Today I'm back to 14th Street, and tonight goddaughter Charlotte and I are seeing THE DUKES OF HAZZARD.

TOD:
Gower Champion:  "Put on a Happy Face" (BYE BYE BIRDIE)
                            "Dancing" (HELLO, DOLLY!)
Bob Fosse:  "Rich Man's Frug" (SWEET CHARITY)
                   "Steam Heat" (PAJAMA GAME)
"Who's Got the Pain?" (DAMN YANKEES)
                   All of PIPPIN
Onna White:  Dance in the Library (THE MUSIC MAN)
                     "Open a New Window" (MAME)
                     "Shipoopi" (THE MUSIC MAN)
Jerome Robbins:  "Mack Sennett Ballet" (HIGH BUTTON SHOES)
                          "America" (WEST SIDE STORY)
"The Small House of Uncle Thomas" (KING & I)
All of GYPSY and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
Michael Bennett:  "Turkey Lurkey Time" (PROMISES, PROMISES)

My favorite Robbins dance?  DANCES AT A GATHERING for New York City Ballet:  I don't know what happens in it, but the beauty and sense of humor throughout suddenly lead to a quiet ending of great emotional depth and pain.  Amazing!

Two omitted masters:
Agnes deMille:  "Come to Me, Bend to Me" (BRIGADOON)
                        "Hornpipe" (CAROUSEL)
                        "Many A New Day" (OKLAHOMA!)

George Balanchine:  "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" (ON YOUR TOES)

I have heard mixed things about the film version of Cradle. I have never gotten around to seeing the film but I am a fan of the stage show. I should check it out. I know it's pedantic and hits you over the head, as I've been told, with the political message but it moves me and there are some wonderful songs like Nickel Under the Foot and Joe Worker.

I've mixed feelings about the TOD.  My parents were never ones to go to the theater, and since we were LA based, rather than NYC, seeing much of the work of these masters becomes problematic at best.  I did get to see A Chorus Line way back when it played at the now demolished Shubert Theater, and loved it.

And, of course, there are the attempts to recreate the work, such as Fosse.

So, for much of the time my knowledge of Fosse, Champion, White, Robbins, and Bennett is reduced to what has been preserved on film.  At least we have that, and it's a good thing film was invented in time for some of their work to be frozen for everyone to enjoy.

I'm glad Fosse's "Hernando's Hideaway" was preserved on The Pajama Game, for example.  Shirley MacLaine prancing through the streets of NYC with the "Brass Band" from Sweet Charity is wonderful (and can be compared with Gwen Verdon doing the same number on The Best of Broadway Musicals, culled from Ed Sullivan's broadcasts).  Almost everything from All That Jazz thrills me, but particularly the pas de deux between Roy Scheider and Erzsebet Foldi.  I can't think of a more intimate portrait in dance of a father and daughter.

For Onna White, yes indeed to the library dance from Music Man and to "Sincere" from Bye Bye Birdie.  I'm not sure; didn't both films use the same set for the downtown area?

Robbins was part of my growing up, of course, because of the annual broadcast of Peter Pan.  And West Side Story gives us "Cool," along with a lot of other numbers.

But Champion's work wasn't really preserved on film (although Gene Kelly copied it for Hello Dolly).  And Bennett wasn't part of the film musical era, came along too late.

Drat.

One last group of words on the dinner der B and I had at Abstractions (http://www.rehoboth.com/abstractions/) last night: this was probably not what purists would consider true sushi.  Too bad, we loved it.

The various maki were:

Tsunami: Crab meat, cucumber, with scallion on the outside.

Dragon: Eel, avocado, eel sauce, with sesame seeds on the outside.

Scorpion: Shrimp, avocado, cucumber, mayonnaise, with scallion outside.

Spicy Yellowtail: Yellowtail, avocado and cucumber (again), spicy mayo, with tobiko outside.

Dynamite: Tuna and salmon, which was broiled and topped with spicy mayo and lump crab meat.

Mexican: Tuna, jalapeno peppers, spicy mayo and tempura bits.

And, ordered special, Spider: Soft shell crab, avocado and cucumber, with tobiko and sesame seeds outside.  (Love the crunch of the soft shell crab!)

I'm up, I'm up.  I don't know why, but I'm up.

Gene Kelly didn't choreograph the film of Hello, Dolly!, Michael Kidd did.  And while there may be a shadow or echo of Gower's work, Kidd's is crass and bombastic, whereas Gower's work in Dolly is elegant and unforgettable (especially in I Put My Hand In, Dancing, The Waiter's Gallop, the title song - but also his direction, which is all choreography, too).

Love the other choices I'm seeing.  I wish I'd seen Bennett's Ballroom which, despite its faults as a show, I hear had breathtaking dance sequences.  And I'd add to Fosse the brilliant Everything Old Is New Again, with Reinking and Foldi, which is so perfect that it makes me tear up every time I watch it.  In fact, I'm going to watch it today.  In fact, I may just watch all my favorite dances today - sad that all that we have of Dolly is what's been on the Ed Sullivan show (well, I have a "reviewer's reel" of the eighties Channing tour that has most of the Dolly number on it).

It is also Bad Poetry Day.

I am inspired to compose me some poetry:

Oh, dark gunk under my fingernails,
Whence forth did you come?
Potato peeling?
Nose picking?
Dorito snacking?
Neither task have I done in a day.

Oh, dark gunk under my fingernails,
Not easily removed
With the tip of the pen--
In fact, made worse!
Dark gunk with inky overtones.

Now resembling a freighter
On the ocean horizon at night
Smuggling tanker car loads
Of expired Rice-Krispie Bars
To be sold to in some far off land.

Please excuse the scratch-outs.  But this is a work in progress and I like to emulate the "at work" style of my favorite motion picture poetess, Diane Keaton in Interiors.  Every time I scratch out a word, I get to emit a soul stirring sigh.

Sigh!

Let me know if y'all would like to read more of my poetry!

Just caught up on last nights posts....thanks for the links to those jeans artivcles Jjose... It boggles this little mind... I was raised by a Scottish mother to never spend $1.00 when you could spend 25 cents... I grew up wearing Wrangler jeans when all around me wore Levi's. My mother never met a generic brand  she didn't like "its the same as Rice Krsipies only half the price".  I think I am genetically incapable of spending $100 - $670 for a pair of jeans  even if I felt I had the financial means to do so.

Oh, brother all those choreographers to discuss. Harad to know where to start, and bk has managed to name many that I would have included.

Let's see, Gower Champion.

"The Grand Imperial Cirque d'Paris" and also the opening and closing of CARNIVAL!

"Put on Your Sunday Clothes," "The Waiters' Gallop," and "Hello, Dolly" from HELLO DOLLY.

"Without You" and "The Life of the Party" in THE HAPPY TIME.

the title number from 42nd STREET.

I never got to see BYE BYE BIRDIE or MACK & MABEL in their original productions, so I don't feel I can comment on them.

Michael Bennett:

"Turkey Lurky Time" from PROMISES, PROMISES

"It's Not Where You Start" in SEESAW

"Company," "Side by Side by Side," "Tick Tock" "It's the Little Things You Do Together" in COMPANY

"Who's That Woman" and "The Story of Lucy and Jessie" in FOLLIES

Every musical number in A CHORUS LINE but especially that exciting opening number, "Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen," "One," "The Tap Combination," "One finale."

The ertirety of DREAMGIRLS seemed to be moving, not just the people but those towers, so the whole show seemed like a musical number.

I never saw BALLROOM either, so I can't comment.

AH, The Shubert theatre, the location of my most favorite theatrical experience - the west coast premeire of "Sunset Blvd." with Glenn Close, on of the best evenings of my life.  Also, the home of one of my least favorite evening of theatre, the west coast premiere of "Ragtime" - a show I really wanted to like, but found it WAY too big and I was very overwhelmed. The people who I were with loved it and couldn't understand why I didn't love it.

There was a time when some friends of mine used to trek down to LA for west coast "premieres" of musicals.  Those were good times.  We always would do something "fun" in the area - like the tourist things or maybe Universal Studios or Magic Mountain (on the way there or the way back) - we saw such shows as "The Phantom of the Opera", "Sunset Blvd", "Miss Saigon", "By Jeeves", "Titanic" and "The Lion King" - those were great weekends and really good times.  I also trekked down there for "Martin Guerre" but I didn't bring anyone with me!!  Oh - I also saw "Beauty and the Beast" with the Original Broadway Cast at the Shubert - that trip was just another story, nevermind :)

Lately, there has been much to travel to the LA area for theatre, SF seems to be getting all the new shows or west coast premieres.

That said, I'll miss the Shubert, I know it was a "barn" of a space, but it held some great memories.

Mornin', y'all... You should see the sombre faces moping about the office this morning. None of us are any too happy about those lousy bonuses for which we worked our butts off. Feh!

TOD:

Fosse: "Rich Man's Frug" is brilliant. "Steam Heat," "Hot Honey Rag," "Too Darn Hot," "Big Spender," "Something Better Than This," "Mein Herr," "Take Off With Us," "Sing, Sing, Sing!," "Shoeless Joe From Hannibal, MO" and the Baseball Ballet.

Bennett: "Steppin' to the Bad Side," "Goodbye, Twelve, Hello, Thirteen," the Audition for CHORUS LINE, "Turkey Lurkey Time."

Champion: "Waiter's Gallop," "We're In the Money," "42nd Street."

White: "Marion the Librarian," "Shipoopi"

Robbins: "Small House of Uncle Thomas" just blows me away, "Prologue," "America," "Dance at the Gym," "The Newsboys," "Ya Gotta Have a Gimmick," "To Life (L'Chaim)," "The Bottle Dance," "Tevye's Dream"

Others:

Stroman: "I Got Rhythm," "Slap That Bass," "Little Old Ladyland (Along Came Bialy)"

DeMille: The Carousel Ballet, "Out of My Dreams/Ballet"

Title: Re:ARTHUR MURRAY TAUGHT ME DANCING IN A HURRY
Post by: Matt H. on August 18, 2005, 07:54:03 AM
Fosse: Geez, where to start. From the movies or THE PAJAMA GAME and DAMN YANKEES:

""I'll Never Be Jealous Again," "Once a Year Day," "Steam Heat," "Hernando's Hideaway."

"Who's Got the Pain," "Shoeless Joe," "Two Lost Souls."

Yes, the challenge dance in MY SISTER EILEEN and his section of "From This Moment On" in KISS ME KATE are wonderful, but was it all Fosse or did Tommy Rall assist in the first and Hermes Pan in the second? "From This Moment On" doesn't look much like Hermes Pan in any of the segments, well, possibly the Bobby Van segment. Hard to know who did what since it all seems to have been collaborative.

SWEET CHARITY: "If My Friends Could See Me Now," "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This," "I'm a Brass Band."

PIPPIN: "Magic to Do" "War Is a Science," "Ordinary Woman."

CHICAGO: well, everything but my favorite is the "Hot Honey Rag."

DANCIN': well, of course all of the dancing is brilliant, but as I think I've mentioned before, I wearied of the concept halfway through, so all the dancing has kind of blurred in my mind and nothing stands out, not even things like "Swing, Swing, Swing" that was re-mounted for FOSSE.

I never saw BIG DEAL and the excerpts in FOSSE  or on the TOnys ("Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar") didn't impress me.

Robbins: WEST SIDE STORY: "The Dance at the Gym" and the "Somewhere Ballet" stick in my mind the most. Bernstein's music is so exciting that the dancing just lifts you out of your seat.

PETER PAN: "I'm Flying"

HIGH BUTTON SHOES: "Keystone Kops Ballet"

GYPSY: "All I Need Is the Girl," "You Gotta Have a Gimmick"

THE KING & I: "Small House of Uncle Thomas" "Shall We Dance?"

FIDDLER: "The Bottle Dance," "Tradition."

Onna White: Well, in the movies of THE MUSIC MAN and OLIVER, I loved "Marian the Librarian," "Shipoopi," "Who Will Buy," and "Om-Pa-Pa."

MAME: "It's Today," "Open a New Window," "Mame," "That's How Young I Feel."

1776: "Sit Down, John," "He Plays the Violin," "Cool, Conservative Men."

DR George, glad you're enjoying THE MUPPET SHOW, Season 1. Don't some of the Muppets look different to their "finished" versions that we're now familiar with. Miss Piggy, for example. Seems like she looked much less the diva in that first year, or is my memory simply playing tricks on me?

DR Jason - If it makes you feel any better, the place where I've worked for close to fourteen years doesn't give bonuses at all, just a small token Christmas gift.  And only one out of the six places I've worked in my working life ever gave a substantial bonus.  I can't say anyhting about the world in general, but on the basis of what I've personally experienced, bonuses are not the norm.  I know that might not make you feel better financially if you've come to rely on the bonus, but I've gotten so used to a "no bonus" world out there.  That doesn't put any more money in your pocket, but maybe it'll make you feel a little better about your company vs. the world out there, I hope?

Thanks for the links DR Jennifer...I am looking very forward to this next Amazing Race....this should be a fun one (well, all the seasons have been fun!).

I wonder how the challenges will work since there are 4 players. Will all players have to stick together? Can they split up?  Will 1, 2, 3 or 4 players have to do the challenges where before only 1 of the 2 had to?

Since some are kids as little as 8, i'm guessing there won't make it so EVERY competitor has to do challenges alone.

I also wonder if the little kids will make it easier or harder.  I mean they will get tired and cranky.  And they won't be able to help think.  But they may be able to see the markers that the others don't.  And kids can run fast. So i guess they won't slow the team down.

So looking at the group, which team would you think would do the best?

And CBS.com has the new list of players for the upcoming SURVIVOR.

Yes i saw that last week. They have one former NFL player.  But an interesting rumor (not sure if it is still a rumor) is that steph and bobby jon are the 2 additional tribemembers who have yet to be named.

Apparently they announced there would be 18 on the show, but only have pics of 16.

That is a difficult question. I will have to wait and see the personalities of the contestants...I think having some little kids on the teams will certainly be a challenge at times, but will be very educational for those kids, and will make it even more enjoyable for families at home who like to watch this show together.

Interesting and cool, BK, that Buñuel would admit to that act of caprice and whim. I have a feeling that sort of thing happens all the time, and when the critics take something as "genius," the Directors just go along with that rather than admit that something just happened for no particular reason.

I never did find out who sang for Gloria Grahame in SONG OF THE THIN MAN. The IMDB was no help, saying she sang the song "It's Not So Easy to Forget," but that is clearly not her voice.

Actually, it sounds a lot like Gloria DeHaven, but I can't find any information saying she ever dubbed for anyone (She was an MGM contract player at the time and could have done it).

The Muppet Show was cool that way. Great guest hosts who weren't necessarily the hottest young actors on the scene like they would do today.

I know a lot of folks who only know who Ethel Merman is because of that show. I don't think I ever saw Harry Nilsson any other place. And some off-the-wall British comedians and such, as the show was taped there and they sometimes had to get people from nearby.

DR FJL: I've never worked for a business that gave bonuses. I've never worked anywhere where I had paid vacations. The bonus we got yesterday was based directly on the amount of "extra" stuff we sold over the year. At the end of August last year, the bonus was $2500 after taxes. The spring incentive bonus was $750, which is the lowest that anyone could recall receiving. Yesterday's was $225. I was counting on that money as a cushion so I could quit this job and go back to temping so I could have some free time to get back to auditions so I could actually do what I moved here to do. I can barely afford to walk to the subway with $225. So now I'm stuck here even longer.

At least I didn't go out and buy round trip air tickets to Paris like one of the other guys in the office did. I feel really badly for him...

Nope, I do think that as the show progressed Henson refined the puppets with the exception of Kermit.  Miss Piggy got a snout job and had more luxurious hair.  Fozzy Bear and Ralph the dog got more expressive eyes.  But even as primitive as Henson's Muppets were back during the Ed Sullivan days, they were still the most lively of performers.

Fosse:
"A Secretary is Not a Toy"

"Take Off With Us" from ALL THAT JAZZ. The way he takes what looks to the layman like a perfectly good musical number and just rips it apart and recreates it as a transcendental piece. That's just Fosse showing us why he's Fosse and we're not.

I may be alone, but I LOVE the psychedelic Sammy Davis Jr. number in SWEET CHARITY. It is absolutely nuts.

I don't mean to sound whiny or bitchy about money that I normally wouldn't have anyway. I'm just HORRIBLY disappointed and the prospects of working here any longer than I have to makes me feel even worse. We asked if raises were a possiblity this year - even enough just to allow for inflation - and they told us that they wouldn't consider raises until at least next fall. I'd like to know how they think someone can survive on $1400/mo in New York City...

No one is alone, DR Rodz.  "Rhythm of Life" is a favorite of mine, as well.

A Fosse number I like in Dancin' was the "Crunchy Granola Suite".  It's a shame it was so badly done on the Fosse video.  In fact, everything was badly done in the Fosse video.

Another favorite of Onna White:  "I'll Do Anything" from Oliver.

As I don't seem to know from these choreographers (I know who most of them are, just am not familiar enough with their work...particularly on the stage) I will name my favorite choreographers instead.

Olga Suarez: she choreographed the frantic dance of the Wongo women in THE WILD WOMEN OF WONGO.

K. H. Kapadia: choreographed with wild, masked, shaking head dance in GUMNAAM.

Whoever choreographed the Zombie Stomp number in HORROR OF PARTY BEACH is a genius!

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

Well, I got my eight hours of sleep...plus a little extra.  Unfortunately, some of that "extra" was just trying to sleep with all the noise from the street early this morning.   my dorm room basically looks out onto the main "intersection" here in Williamstown - where Routes 2 and 7 cross.  -And it's more like a rotary.  Well, I guess since all the truckers were making their deliveries in time for the weekend, there was just a lot of traffic noise starting around 5:00am.  I think I just tossed and turned for about two hours - and I was just too tired to go ahead and close my windows to see if that would help muffle the noise.  -And, and apparently, there were a bunch of people running the stoplight this morning too - I heard that police siren way too many times.

Heck, it's quieter in New York City!!!!

;)

...But I'm up.

DR Jason - Your story reminds me of my first and only "Christmas bonus" at the music store I was working at in Richmond.  I had started there in March of that year as their new buyer and manager for their print/sheet music room.  By the time Christmas came along, I had doubled the inventory, more than doubled the business, and I had doubled the profit for that room from the previous year - which had more or less been doing "steady" business for the past 15.  So...

When I used to work at the store up in Falls Church, the owner was always generous when it came time for bonuses - Christmas or otherwise.  Jim always took good care of his employees.  -So I had some sort of precedent in my head now that I was down in Richmond.  Well... After being shown the new spreadsheets outlining my accomplishments in Richmond, the manager hesitantly informed me that the owner there did not believe in bonuses.  However, he did.  And he gave me a personal check for $75.00.  Yes, I was disappointed that I was not receiving more - especially after being just shown the "proof", but his generosity helped to ease the sting.  In fact, it turned out my manager and his assistant provided the bonuses for everyone in the store out of their own salaries.

...Which made it very hard for me to leave the store a few weeks later when my road work started to come in...  In any case...

Amidst all the gloom and doom, I hope there's at least one or two bright spots in your office - even if one of those bright spots is just a window with a view of the street.  ;)

Group Wants to Bring African Animals to North America
By JOSEPH B. VERRENGIA, AP
DENVER (Aug. 17) - If a group of prominent ecologists have their way, lions and elephants could someday be roaming the Great Plains of North America.

The rapid extinction of dozens of large mammal species in North America - perhaps due to a combination of climate change and overhunting - triggered a landslide of changes to the environmental landscape. Relocating large animals to vast ecological parks and private reserves would begin to repair the damage, proponents say, while offering new ecotourism opportunities to a withering region.

"We are not saying this is going to be easy," said Cornell University ecologist Josh Donlan, the lead author of the proposal. "There are huge and substantial risks and obstacles."

Did you see me and DP Woody on the front row, far left?

We, too, had a great time. Frankly, I think Sunset is much better than Phantom.

I agree!  Because they started with a well written story, it all worked.  The only problem is all the reusing of themes.  Can't ALW write a new tune for each different song??  How difficult can that be? :P

LOL Bennett's choreography for the STAGE - not Jeffrey Hornaday's pale and dumb re-staging for the movie.  LOL   ;D

No, you are absolutely correct.  And two different people voiced her in the first season, too.  One of the options on the DVDs is a second set of subtitles that offer tidbits of information about the shows and episodes.  I had that selected a found out a lot about the history of the characters and the changes in the looks.  I highly recommend turning that on and reading the info while you watch the shows. ;D

I've always said that ALW writes some truly wonderful melodies... about sixteen measures per show, which he then uses approximately 2,734 times!

And now I believe I'm going to do some laundry.

It's actually sort of traditional for me to do housework on opening nights - just something sort of brainless and not too taxing, but still enough activity to keep me from being totally lazy before call time.

Off to the machines...

Rodzinski, when you order a whole album off iTunes, do you get to download the cover art, too?

There is a way to get the cover art when you purchase from iTunes.  In fact, it should automatically download with the album.

Try this - pull up the album and right click on one of the songs and use the "get info" option, and check under the "summary" tab, the cover art should be there.

Fun Photo, DR JRand.  When we did Pippin, we had a cast of only 9 or 10 (I don't remember exactly, it was a long time ago) and all the characters except Pippin and the Leading player came out of the players. For example I was a player in all the scenes that there were players, except for Berthe's scene, when I donned the Berthe costume and became Berthe.  It was a fun way to do it and was really the only way we could in the small space we had. We also did it in the round,  (well perhaps oblong is a better word) which was fun.

If there is one thing I cannot stand it's to hear people chewing their food and the girl that sits across from me is smacking her lips on a salmon and spinach salad and it's driving me crazy!! I guess it's better than the two bananas she  squishes through her teeth everyday as a snack, or the oatmeal and (whole!) almonds she tears through each morning, but still...STOP THE MADNESS!!

We did BABY with 8 people in the cast: the three couples and then 2 people who played the other roles. In numbers where other chorus people were needed (like "Two People in Love" which we called our "Love American Style" number), everyone came on stage when ensemble was needed. It worked wonderfully well.

I watched the episode from THE THIN MAN TV show which is on the special features disc, too. I remember liking the show as a kid (probably because of Asta). Not the greatest show in the world, had none of the "feel" of the THIN MAN films, but for a half hour mystery series, probably not the worst ever made.

Then I put in SECONDS and watched the first hour. Such wonderful direction, great moody cinematography by James Wong Howe, and easily Rock Hudson's best performance ever.

After the run of bedroom comedies and action dramas he had done, however, it's not hard to see how the public just would not like him in this. I liked it then, and I like it now.

Dear Ron P.,

We share your grief!
Everytime I read about Charlie Chaplin I think of Miss Vickie... and I know you'll know why I'm saying that!

When my Mimi cat disappeared from my parents' house, I was living in Florida, and we never found her body and that thought  still hurts!
It might seem foolish to some but losing a pet is like losing a dear relative or friend.

It's next Friday, August 26.  In fact, that is also DR Jrand's natal anniversary too.  -As I'm sure BK will be sure to post in the notes for that day.

In any case...

I was actually thinking of holding some sort of "party" - especially since I'll be in New York City.  Once I'm back Sunday, I'll start planning, although, I just want something informal.  I'll probably just pick a place, pick a time span, and get the word out.  As long as I'm among friends, I know it will be a good birthday.

There is nothing wrong with that at all.  And since they just recently did another round of sprucing up and house-cleaning, you may notice some new things since the last time you saw it.

You'll also be seeing Hugh Panaro as the Phantom - love him - just wish he wasn't all covered up in that show - what a face!  what a body!  ;)   And if he indeed is going to join the cast of Lestat, well, then you may be catching one of his final performances as The Phantom.

Enjoy!

*I'd actually be interested in meeting you at the show, but I'm heading down to Charlotte that weekend for fall SETCs.  -Timing is everything.

very nice indeed!

The reviewer didn't mention the best song on the CD "Getting Away With You" and valiant efforts of the new, up and coming composer, Jonathan Goldman - either that or he's still trying to figure out who it is!!!

Hugh is definitely leaving POTO October 1 for Lestat - which begins rehearsals at the end of that month.   Hmmm... Now that would a nice "closing night" to be at.

I saw CRADLE WILL ROCK (the movie did not use "The" in the title). I liked it, and it seemed a very sincere attempt to capture that important moment in theater history. I can't say that I adored the movie, but I certainly thought it was worth seeing.

Today has been such a relief from the past week. That early morning rain was a blessing, and it's remained "relatively" cool (for August) the rest of the day. Supposedly we were going to get more rain, but so far, nothing.

Speaking of The Woman In White it looks like Micahel Ball will be part of the Broadway cast.  If that's the case, I'm be making a trip to NYC somewhere around the time between Christmas and New Years.

One other thing I've been meaning to bring up since I got back from NYC:

Remember we talking about Leonard Maltin's movie guide book not having certain movies listed in it, and I mentioned that this year there were going to be two volumes, one of classic films and one of more recent vintage.

Well, while I was in NYC at the Barnes & Noble I went to on my way down 5th Avenue, I saw that both books are now available. The classic volume contains movies pre-1960. The 2006 Guide contains some classics but a lot more recent features and is not as thick as the last few year's guides.

Note to DR Rodzinski: THE BOATNICKS is still not in the new edition. Sorry.

Hello, All - It's been a killer few days, both at work and not at work.  The person who usually hosts our August book group (covered dish dinner and movie) had a family emergency in CA this week, so I'm hosting tonight.  That meant a lot of housecleaning (DH Richard and DS Rob were very helpful) and some food preparation.

Opening night vibes for DR Jose and - at long last - a photo of the Kite Cookies!

Title: Re:ARTHUR MURRAY TAUGHT ME DANCING IN A HURRY
Post by: Matthew on August 18, 2005, 02:23:21 PM
By Jeeves was an exception, it was rather low budget really.  As for Aspects, it ran ALMOST a year, I want to say something like 323 performances.
Title: Re:ARTHUR MURRAY TAUGHT ME DANCING IN A HURRY
Post by: Jason on August 18, 2005, 02:23:42 PM
ASPECTS ran from April 1990 to March, '91.  22 previews and 377 performances.

WOMAN IN WHITE is doing quite well in the U.K. Of course, that doesn't mean it'll be a hit here, but I've heard it's pretty decent.

What do I know? I think "Ragtime" is one of the best musicals of the last two decades. And I think "The Beautiful Game" is better than tWiW - despite the dreadful Ben Elton lyrics.  TBG at least did not rely on any gimmicks for its staging. You may well be at the movies with the amount of projected images in tWiW.

DR TomOfOz can answer that completely, but the CD suggests there are bits of dialogue and it's supposidly a complete recording of opening night.  Mostly sung, I would say.

I think RAGTIME is definitely one of the GREAT musicals of the last two decades. I found it a stunning achievement, and it was easily my favorite musical of the 1990s, even more than ASSASSINS or KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN which would probably rank as my second and third favorites.

I found By Jeeves really REALLY funny.  It's too bad it didn't run longer.  It's a good example that the ALW is not always a draw.  The video is a filmed version of what was actually on stage on Broadway, though shot in Canada with the Bway cast.  It's just fun, british humor, but fun... and very anti-ALW style.

I truly cannot imagine that in eight months or so when I'm planning my next NYC trip that I'll have the slighest interest in seeing the show. However, it would probably depend on what else opens this year and what's still running next summer.

A cleaned up affair, DRGinny.  The A&E/BBC version on 2 DVDs is much better.  The Witherspoon is trying too hard to make Becky Sharp a modern woman; she's smart, sassy, unscrupulous, and a villain in the book.  Talk about the things Margaret Mitchell stole from it for GWTW.

I like Woman in White so far (based only on the recording, of course), but I don't love it.  I need to listen to it more times to get to know it.  It seems to me that there is more spoken dialogue than previous ALW shows...I don't know how much compared to Sunset Blvd., though, but more in general.

$1400.00 a month in New York?  Honey, I made more than that twenty years ago at Home Liquors in South Hackensack, New Jersey!  Jason, we need to find you a new job......... or a rich boyfriend!

BB6 - SPOILERS

Well, only spoilers if you didn't see the live show and are going to watch later.

One thing I'm wondering if anyone else caught this. Janelle had 300 written on her board for the answer in the tiebreaker, with time called for giving an answer. She was holding it upside down, when Julie Chen said "Janelle you are upside down" she turned it around and it now read 275.   If she had kept 300 she wouldn't have been HOH.  Hmmm makes you wonder.

I think she did a good thing nominating Jenn and Maggie.  April will really go crazy now.

Yes I saw that it said 300 when it was upside down.  So either she changed it, or she had another number written on the other side.

I think it was fair, since when we saw the 300 upside down, april had still not even written down her answer.

But it was interesting how that happened.

Anyhow i was so happy!

I had a good feeling when they announced a numbers question, since janelle is very smart, and april and other are not.

I spent the 8-9 hour watching VERONICA MARS off the DVR which I recorded from UPN on Wednesday night.

Yep, CBS' experiment with VERONICA MARS converted me. Got me hooked on the show, so I wondered if I'd be able to follow this week's episode off UPN. Yep, I could, and I greatly enjoyed it. I now have a new mystery show to enjoy. Of course, I am not happy that it's going to be coming on opposite LOST this coming season, but that's the great thing about DVRs, and mine will be getting PLENTY of use.

There are shots in the orgy sequence which were not in the original cut of the film as played in 1968 (I think that's the right year).  Frankenheimer talks about that in his commentary (they did keep his commentary from the laser, didn't they?).

1966. Yes, they did keep the commentary, but I didn't listen to it this first time seeing the DVD. I never had the laserdisc.

The MPAA had lost a lot of power by 1966 (they allowed all the language in VIRGINIA WOOLF that same year), but I can't believe they would have ever approved of those crotch shots. The film carries an R-rating now on the packaging strictly for the nudity (as it says on the packaging).

If TCB bombs out, can I adopt you?

It's a deal, Uncle Larry!

In any musical, I can't imagine Jackman doing any wrong. His performance in THE BOY FROM OZ will live long in my memory.

Well, my heavy eyelids are telling me it's bedtime.

Good evening, all.

TCB: Would you please speak to my employer and tell them about inflation? They seemed to have missed the memo.

I have the Aussie cast recording of BATB w/Mr. Jackman as Gaston. It's fascinating to hear international recordings to listen for the subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) differences. But, I'm a nerd like that.

I ordered a pizza tonight from the Hut of Pizza. I ordered a thin crust. I GOT a handtossed. I was not happy.

There's a Christmas episode of Will & Grace on right now. It makes me excited for winter. And I've decided what I'm getting the Greek for Christmas - surprise tickets to a Broadway show for which the Greek and I share a huge interest. Ah, unrequited romance...

Good Evening!

Back from opening night.

And it was a beautiful opening night.  Everything just seemed to click - the performances, the technical aspects... even the weather agreed with us.  *Goodrich has no A/C, and tonight the temps were in the upper 60s.  Moments that hadn't been working, worked tonight.  Scenes landed.  Songs buttoned.  It really was a very good night.

*Yes, there is a "big sigh" of relief in this post.  The past couple days and nights of rehearsals have been going well, but not well enough.  A lot of work was done in the past three days.  A lot.  It's so nice to know that it all paid off.  And just in time too.

Now we just have to repeat it two more times...

;)

I ended up staying for the second piece, I Have Loved Strangers.  The play was written by Anne Washburn, and like Triangle it was basically written this summer here at Williamstown as part of the leapFROG program.  The Act One Company of actors became the guinea pigs, of sorts, for both pieces - a play and a musical.

I Have Loved Strangers draws some of it's material from the Book of Jeremiah in the Bible.  A truly haunting piece.  I'm still digesting it, thinking it through.  I'm not even sure how to describe it.  I want to say Expressionistic, maybe even with tinges of The Absurd...  I just really don't have the vocabulary right now.

However, what amazed me most about the piece was the fact that the same troupe of actors who are in Triangle are also in I Have Loved Strangers - the Act One Company.  Not only did they rehearse both shows at the same time, but they also presented both shows in the same evening.  Back to back.  Amazing work.  All those lines.  The completely different styles of each piece.  The physical demands of each piece.  WOW!

And one "notable" happened to be in attendance tonight, Marge Champion.  Yes, Gower Champion's widow.  However, she later married the director, Boris Sagal, and and after his death, she established a directing fellowship in his name here at WTF.  (Boris Sagal is also the father of actress/singer, Katey Sagal.)

Johanna McKeon, who directed I Have Loved Strangers is the Boris Sagal Fellow this year.

I have the Hugh Jackman recording...as well as the Japanes cast recording.  I got it in London (the one time that I went).  It's very interesting to hear those songs sung in Japanese.  Very good performers all around, but I know the show, so I know what they're all singing, which helps. :)

OH!  And I received my Williamstown Theatre Festival 2005 T-Shirt today.  On the back is a quote from the play Create Fate which ran earlier this season:

"Sometimes The Job You Think You Want
Is Not The Right Job For You At All."

How true.  How true.
