Well, you've read the notes, the notes solved the mystery of the big sleep, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just trying to figure out why it's the big sleep rather than farewell, my lovely, computer-wise.
-
And the word of the day is: UXORIOUS!
-
I did type out a post, then lost it when the topic was locked..
-
Ah well, to repeat myself..
So sorry that Jed and I have been so E&T recently. We both deserve bitchslapping, I'm sure. Sadly, we won't be able to attend the HHW gathering this Sunday. The location being a block and a half from our apartment, it couldn't be more ideal...but we promised a dear friend of ours that we would come and see him play the lead in Anything Goes, and the Sunday matinee is the only performace we'd be able to make, given Jed's work schedule. We expect many pictures, of course.
Elmore, SO glad to hear that your father's situation has improved. I will continue to send vibes to him, as well as blanket vibes for anyone else around here who needs them.
Wedding plans are slowly progressing! We have the church reserved, so May 12th of 2007 is now our official date. Whee!
-
It is 2:15 a.m. and nice and cool and breezy outside at 91F. I can't sleep, so I've been applying stain to some cabinet doors. It's much nicer on the patio now than it usually is in the afternoon at 107F.
-
Re the word of the day: I remember that when Anthony Minghella in his ENGLISH PATIENT Oscar speech thanked " My wife, who has taught me the meaning of the word 'uxoriousness'." - Skip and I turned to each other and one of us (I forget which one) said, "I wish she'd teach us the meaning of that word. I have no idea what it means." :)
-
Good morning, all! Sidney Poitier, c'est moi. Tonight I have dinner with DR Ginny and Richard. Before then, I have a morning errand at the US Post Office, and a trip to the oncologist with my dad.
My sister-in-law called me to congratulate me on the bitchslapping I gave him last evening over his carelessness in wasting our day. I'm curious to see what happens with his lady friend today, so if I am run off the road or shot . . .
DR Ann, welcome back! Ive missed you and DR Jed. I hope our BK will get to work on our first real HHW wedding. After the debacle when DR Jose was turned down by DR MBarnum, we've had no chance to have our own reality show.
TOD: Did I miss it again?
-
Ta da! Comcast has finally decided to work after nearly 12 hours!
Uxurious indeed....someone must have been told to get the L out.
-
Ah DRMATTH - if DRMBARNUM no longer has the tape I made for him, a copy of YOUNGBLOOD would be most appreciated. We shall see what we shall see.
My guess is that Bosco and Freddy will have to watch it first, although Freddy may have seen it already.
-
And I would especially recommend SUSAN SLADE and ROME ADVENTURE, if you haven't seen them....and care for that sort of thing.
-
I have blocked the worst jobs I had....although working in a factory making class rings was about the WORST 30 days of my life....including the drive and the fellow employees.
-
Hello DR ELMORE. Keep your eyeball on the highball in your hand.
-
DR TPUNK eventually you will be able to download the audtion form for HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING on the website, in about 8 months, that is.
-
DR Cillaliz, I loved the book THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, and I look forward to the movie.
TOD: Worst job: driving a delivery truck for Office Outfitters, but to be fair to them, I was unhappy, unfocused in my life, and unable to find a career that paid anything in my hometown while I did community arts: theatre and symphony. It was still a terrible job, I was a terrible driver, and I should be glad I didn't wreck the van more than I did. I guess I'm lucky I wasn't fired.
Worst bosses: William Kingsley, Shippensburg State College
Deadley Inwood, Office Outfitters
Donald L. Rosenberg, Miami University
I can say nothing good about any of them, and I'm sure the feeling's mutual.
-
Hello DR ELMORE. Keep your eyeball on the highball in your hand.
If I had a glass eye, I could keep the highball on the eyeball.
-
The boss from hell was the manager before my current manager. People were asking for store transfers or being forced out. It got to the point where I was ready to quit or ask for a store transfer when she "resigned". He/She and the assistant manager (who was a nice person before he/she was hired) "resigned" after it was found out that they made a questionable move. They were gone and I was still there. I rode it out and six years later I am still here (SS reference) and they are homeless and unemployed. (Not really but as Peter Pan said, "Think Lovely Thoughts".
-
Hi, just checking in to say good morning. It's SOOOOO humid here. My AC froze up yesterday so I just had the fan on last night and the AC portion off. It seems to be ok now, but it's 30 years old and I fear it is nearly dead.
The cats insisted on seeing each other at 5:00 AM. Bootsie wanted to roam the house and Callie wanted to hunt her down, corner her and do God only knows what to her. So I stayed between them and when Bootsie realized she was about to be cornered again she looked at me like "You are going to get me out of this right?" So I picked her up and she went to her room for breakfast and a nap. Callie then had breakfast and some treats. They are both separated and purring....meanwhile, I've gotten the litter boxes cleaned out, done the dishes left from yesterday, checked the AC and found it's working and not frozen and am about to go get coffee. And it's only 7:22 AM on a day off....Yikes!
-
Monday morning greetings! The good news is that my dentist's office is open today and I was able to get an appointment. The even-better news is that said appointment is right in the middle of the day, so I will have to take the whole day as sick leave. Didn't really want to go to work today anyway, but wouldn't have purposely broken a tooth just to avoid it.
Ah, well, now I have the day to putter at home and get a fiesta supper ready for Sidney DR Elmore!
-
GOOD TRIP TO DENTIST VIBES TO DR GINNY
-
TOD - Worst job- probably being the cleaning person for my dad's office when I was in high school. I hate cleaning toilets. I haven't really had a nightmare type boss. The most boring job I had was being a bank teller.
-
Well, off to Coffee Works. laters
-
GOOD TRIP TO DENTIST VIBES TO DR GINNY
Thanks, DR Cillaliz!
TOD - The summer between my freshman and sophomore years in college, I worked for Burroughs Corp., in Plymouth, MI, filing computer schematics. All day, filing by 8-digit numbers - it was mind-numbingly boring, hot, and not challenging in the least. Great motivation for returning to school in the fall!
-
Actually, I take that back, I did have a really bad boss. He was the county attorney in a small town where I was his assistant for about 9 months. There was a huge controversy over the Sheriff's race. He was the sheriff's boy, so to speak, and I was an outsider AND was considered to be on the side of his opponent. I was threatened by the sheriff, followed around etc. My boss did nothing. When my guy won, my boss came to me in tears and said "They told me I have to do something about you" so it was quit or get fired. I quit. It turned out to be a blessing. People knew what happened and I was helped by a number of them to establish my private practice. My boss wasn't mean, he was just a total wuss - which at times can be worse.
-
Twice in my career I've had what everybody considered bad bosses. We all wondered when DGB would leave the university and when KH would retire from the public library. Well, eventually DGB moved on to bigger and better things and KH did retire and they were both replaced by people who, before long, made each institution long for the good old days when DGB and KH were around!
-
Good morning!
Our hot spell continues with no end in sight (well, perhaps fall arriving may end it), and other than running out for some items at the grocery store today, I plan to stay inside.
-
I believe during the early morning hours, TCM did a Vitaphone tribute featuring DON JUAN (which I had no interest in seeing again) and the Vitaphone shorts that were presented the night DON JUAN premiered. I can't wait to see these shorts. They were included in one of the laserdisc DAWN OF SOUND packages many years ago that I couldn't afford at the time ($100) so I've never seen them, and I feared I never would.
I'm looking forward to seeing them now.
For those who don't know, THE JAZZ SINGER was not the first Vitaphone sound feature; DON JUAN was although there was no sound dialogue with the movie. The Vitaphone had sound effects and a music score, and I've seen it before; not a great movie.
-
I saw the DVR recording something this morning after I got up, and I don't remember what I set it for. It might have been LISTEN, DARLING, one of Judy Garland's early MGM movies. I think TOM THUMB and THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T are perhaps tomorrow morning rather than today.
-
Isn't tonight's MEDIUM the repeat of the 3-D episode (probably minus the 3-D effects)? Seems like ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY said it was tonight.
-
Thanks for the heads up on PSYCHE, DR George. I'm looking forward to seeing it on Friday night at 10. MONK has been moved back to 9 p.m. now.
-
And a reminder that THE CLOSER does have a new episode tonight at 9 p.m. on TNT.
-
Success!!! I just spent about an hour searching for some pictures of a project DR Elmore and I were working on 30 years ago today. After almost giving up, I found them and can hardly wait to share them tonight! Maybe we could scan a couple...
-
Success!!! I just spent about an hour searching for some pictures of a project DR Elmore and I were working on 30 years ago today. After almost giving up, I found them and can hardly wait to share them tonight! Maybe we could scan a couple...
Should I be afraid?
-
Should I be afraid?
No-o-o-o, but you'll be surprised!
-
Going to get cleaned up for my outing in a bit.
WBBL.
-
Good morning.
That is all.
-
Oh, wait that is not all...where in Tarnation are Jose and Maria...did they both leave their respective towns for awhile?
-
I've been very fortunate to have had great bosses. Of course, I've only worked in two places in my life (Western Washington University Music Library and Timberland Regional Library Service Center). A couple of my friends at work have new bosses and are having very hard times with them. Not good. They're both looking for new jobs. :-\ They're my two best friends here at work and they both want to leave! What am I gonna do?
???
-
Nice and overcast this morning - so it has cooled off a bit.
TOD - hmmmm.... only really had one "civilian" job in my life - 5 months in the accounting department of Gulf Oil Company in Century City, CA when I was 19. That sort of iced my cake - never had another regular job. It got so bad that I resisted going to sleep at night, cuz it meant that when I woke up I would have to go there. Just hammer away at an adding machine for 8 hours a day, counting minutes to coffee breaks, and treasuring the half hour of NOT IN THE OFFICE for lunch... I realized that if I knew I would have to do work like that, 40 hours a week, for twenty or thirty years, I would cheerfully kill myself.
There is no poverty or lack or rejection or humiliation that makes Showbiz Not Worth It; and no steady paycheck or benefits or "normal life" that makes any other kind of work remotely attractive.
-
I did have an endless Dinner Theater run of Man of La Mancha in Orlando, Florida about twenty-five years ago... read about it in Jewish Thighs... but, as bad as it got, it still involved a costume and make-up and an audience. And it WAS Man of La Mancha, after all...
-
Yup...you can't beat La Mancha! ;D
-
Good Afternoon!
Happy July 3rd!
;)
So... Let's see... Since last Thursday, I've been in Poughkeepsise, NY... New York, NY... Richmond, VA... Durham, NC... Charlotte, NC... and now I'm back in Richmond, VA... And I will be heading up to Fairfax, VA/Washington, DC tonight (once the sun and the temps go down)...
In an word.... WHEW!!!
-
Oh, wait that is not all...where in Tarnation are Jose and Maria...did they both leave their respective towns for awhile?
Here I am!
-And, yes, I did end up leaving my respective town - and a few others - over the past couple of days. (See above post.)
-
And, once again, I'd like to the Thank the Ford Motor Company for making such a fine vehicle, my 1993 Ford Escort Wagon. Yes, the cooling system may need a tune-up, but it averaged 38 miles per gallon (highway) over the first part of this holiday weekend. Yes, the gas prices are ridiculous, but at least the great mileage helped to ease that financial pain.
227,000 Miles and Still Going!!!
:)
-
Otherwise, it seems things are starting to pick up again work-wise - which is making things pick-up morale-wise too. Details to come...
Well, I'm going to attempt to catch up...
Laters...
-
...And since they're saying that today will most likely be the hottest day of the year (so far) here in Richmond, it sounds like a good "excuse" to stay inside in the A/C and surf the web for a while.
;)
-
Jose, did you get to see MAME at Kennedy Center while you were in the general area?
-
Or ASSASSINS at Signature?
-
Got a loaner computer. Mine goes back to apple on Wednesday, and hopefully they can turn it around in short order.
This is the older version of my laptop, and while a bit slower, seems to work fine, and once again I'm using my backup drive, so it's basically my computer in different clothing.
-
No posts in over an hour?
-
Speaking of short order, Skip is making a feast using some of the cooking school recipes. It already smells great.
-
We finally gave in and ordered a new scanner, which should arrive Thursday (that's what next day delivery gets you when you order on a holiday weekend :) ). Finally threw out the piece of decorative furniture that was the old broken scanner.
-
New York 1 is forecasting dangerous weather for late afternoon to very early evening on July 4th in NYC. But they say it should pretty much clear up for the fireworks.
-
Where in tarnation IS everyone? I didn't have a chance to jog this morning, and I'm not sure if it's too darn hot to jog now, which means I may have to wait until this evening. We shall see.
-
I will post just so nobody gets mad at me!
-
Tonight I am going to a birthday party. It's my mom's best friend's 60th birthday.
Hopefully since many people are off today there will not be any traffic.
One good thing about going to said birthday party is that her two little grandchildren will be there. The little boy is about 4 and VERY cute!
-
Tonight while I am gone I will record Canadian Idol and Treasure Hunters (new episode at 9pm).
I'm curious, will anyone here be watching ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA when it starts on Wed?
I'm gathering that a bunch of you will be watching BIG BROTHER (can't remember if it starts on wed or thurs). Can't wait to see who was selected. I wonder if there are any spoilers about that one.
-
I just got back from lunch (Subway) and was going to get my hair cut (so that I'll look smashing for Sunday's PNW HHW get-together), but the place that I go (only $10!) was closed. I'll try again on Wednesday or I may have to wait until next week.
-
Back from the jog - did a little less today, but not much.
-
Back from my dental appointment, where I had the prep for a crown on the tooth that I broke on Friday. Also got the news that the tooth right in front of today's problem needs a root canal :P
So, three weeks from tomorrow, the day of my regularly-scheduled 6-month check-up, I will have that, the root canal, and the permanent crown to replace the temporary I'm now wearing. Yay, another day off!
-
It is into the 90s here and miserably hot. Other than an errand I ran around 11:30, I've been inside all day and will remain here. Far too hot and humid to be doing anything outside.
-
I watched three items of interest this afternoon.
First up was the program of Vitaphone shorts which I mentioned in a post earlier today. I am SO glad I got to see these, the first sound short subjects produced by the Vitaphone Corporation for viewing by the public.
Since these were to be prestege items, there was a definite emphasis on classical music. The NY Philharmonic playing Wagner, stars from the Metropolitan Opera performing (Marion Talley, Giovanni Martinelli, and Anna Case) in separate numbers, violinists Mischa Elman and Efram Zimbalist in separate numbers, and one novelty act: Roy Smeck playing a variety of stringed instruments and harmonica.
Reading about the premiere, it was these shorts rather than Barrymore's DON JUAN that were the real sensation of the evening and pretty much made Warner Bros.' mind up about making a feature film which would incorporate a musical score, singing, and talking. (There was another set of shorts paired with Sydney Chaplin's THE BETTER OLE which cinched the deal since Al Jolson sang three numbers in one of those shorts that proved his on-camera charisma to the Warner brothers.)
-
Page Three Chicken Little Dance!!!
-
Next, I watched SWEET ROSIE O'GRADY, a Betty Grable movie I recorded this morning off one of the HBO channels. Obviously, this movie is ready for a DVD transfer as the picture was very sharp and extremely rich in color. I'm guessing this will be included in the next Grable package, provided the last one sold well. I haven't read anything about how that last boxed set of her films sold.
It's a typical Fox 40s musical (1943, to be exact) with Betty in plenty of outfits that show off her figure and legs. Odd that Robert Young was borrowed from MGM to be her leading man. I guess by this time, her usual leading men must have been in the service. She also does one dance with Hermes Pan (who was the choreographer of the film, too).
The best thing in its favor is how short it is: only about 75 minutes.
-
I finished the afternoon with another film recorded from cable this morning - WHISTLING IN BROOKLYN, the last of Red Skelton's WHISTLING movies. I'm not sure I had ever seen this one before. Lots of MGM contract players in support(Henry O'Neill, William Frawley, Sam Levene, Rags Ragland) and even Leo Durocher and other Brooklyn Dodgers also figuring into the slapstick antics.
-
I noticed that the DVR was recording LEMONY SNICKET'S from Showtime-HD, so I'll probably watch it this evening, another movie I never got around to seeing in the theater.
-
Back from errands. I finally bought a bathroom scale and have now weighed my bathroom - my bathroom has lost several pounds.
I did weigh myself and I must say I was within two pounds of what I presumed I'd lost, weight-wise - pretty good. I definitely want to lose another ten to fifteen pounds, but I know that's the hard part. Plus, I have definitely put on some muscle weight in my legs.
-
Very good BK, you have certainly been doing a fine job of excercising! You should be quite pleased with yourself!
And of course the extra muscle weighs more then the fat, so if you adjust things, you may be at what you had thought you were at.
-
I didn't even really need the scale, just thought it would be fun to see how close I was in my guesstimate. I base everything on how my clothes fit, and I can calculate based on how many inches of waistline I've lost (close to two-and-a-half now).
-
BK:
Has any place like Amazon or Footlight records announced the sale of DECEIT (or will they)?
-
I'm back from the trip to Dr V with my dad; I honestly feel the doctor's been weighing my dad's poor reaction to the first two chemo treatments and thinking it ain't gonna work. I hope I am wrong, but I've always felt the cancer was found too late for much to inhibit it.
Next Monday, at 10:20 AM, Dr V will determine the next step in the process. I'll get to leave for New York on Tuesday with a lot of concerns. Oy!
And now, I am the Man Who Came to Dinner.
-
We haven't done the listing for Deceit yet, but will soon. I don't like to do it too far in advance of street date.
-
Heading down now to start on cleaning chores for the week and then back to TV and LEMONY SNICKET'S SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS.
-
Jose, did you get to see MAME at Kennedy Center while you were in the general area?
No.
-
Or ASSASSINS at Signature?
No.
-
Good Afternoon!
Well, I went ahead and took a nap. And, about two hours later - guess it was more than just a nap - I'm feeling a bit more rested... And also feel like I could just go back to bed again. A puzzlement! (Ah, a The King & I reference[/i].
Steve and I are starting to ponder the dinner options, and I'm pondering whether to head up to Fairfax tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm leaning towards the morning right now, but that could change as the evening progresses. There are some storms moving through, too, so that's something to factor in in my decision making.
-
Long time DRs will know of my dislike of Caged Animals etc. Some rationalisation has had to take place. Fortunately I am cognisant of the need for zoos in terms of public education and especially for the world wide breeding programmes attempting to widen gene pools etc.
As a gift - I have now adopted one of the residents of Melbourne's Royal Zoological Gardens.
The lucky resident is a Cotton-Top Tamarin.
His name is Gary Junior Junior.
-
Where in tarnation IS everyone? May I remind one and all and also all and one that today is NOT a holiday? I, for one, even got an overseas shipment of one DVD today. Hence, let's get some postin' goin' on because if we don't get some postin' goin' on then we're definitely going to get some bitch slappin' goin' on and I don't mean maybe, you hainsies/kimlet people.
-
I am still refinishing my kitchen cabinets.
-
A few months ago, I (mistakenly) loaned to a friend of mine my DVD copy of "Star Wars, episode IV: A New Hope" from the 4-disc set. She (or more likely, her kids) lost the disc and the case isn't in too good a shape...it was practically mint condition when I loaned it. Anyway, I bought a near-mint condition copy on eBay and my friend has paid me for it, so at last my set will be complete again! (almost a Sweeney Todd reference). It hasn't arrived, but the seller has 99% positive feedback. And that's my post...for now.
-
Another friend sent me an e-mail of a 2006 Prom Dress (a.k.a. The Safe Sex Dress):
-
After a day to reflect upon Leslie Jordan's "one-man" show of "Like A Dog on Linoleum," I have to say it's one of the more engaging, intense and thought-provoking performance pieces I've seen.
It's not that it's full of wisdom or has something to say about coping with life. Rather, it's one man's quest for some meaning to his life based upon his life experiences and all the elements that made him what he is today.
Leslie Jordan is extremely funny. He has no delusions about his height, his appearance or his ability to "play it straight." It is his sincere goofiness and a hard edge brought on by a lifetime of drug and alcohol abuse -- punishing himself for being gay, as he is wont to say -- that has made him who he is, and he's all the more endearing for it.
What I truly admire about this man, aside from the many pleasures I've derived from his apppearances on a myriad of TV comedies -- the first time I saw him was on "Murphy Brown" -- including "Will and Grace" and his recurring role as Karen's rich, repressed/closeted gay nemesis Beverley Leslie, is that he's able to reveal/laugh/revel in the tawdry side of his behavior through his life.
As he said about his youth, he was never attracted to the "good kids" his mother always told him he should cultivate. He'd much rather run with the trashy kids...they weren't boring and they were good for a thrill.
There's much laughter in the show...and a few moments of intense introspection...and a finale that is emotionally raw for Jordan (although it was a tad uncomfortable for me to watch).
His one nod to "Will and Grace", the show most people will know him from, is a memorable line from one of the shows: "Well, well...Karen Walker. I thought I caught a whiff of gin and regret!"
The performance I saw was scheduled to be the final performance, but the show has been extended to July 30.
The show was 10 minutes shy of 2 hours. It seemed like 20 minutes.
-
I've been up and about since 10 a.m. on this, my fourth day off in a row.
I've got a pot of spaghetti sauce on the stove. I've packed up two boxes of DVDs I'm placing in storage.
I'm also worrying other ideas of things to try to accomplish before the five days are up.
And I want to see "Superman Returns", as well.
Sigh.
-
I have finished my Bollywood King Kong / Tarzan films (which I really, really enjoyed) and find that my Egyptian films have arrived in the mail!
-
I'm also worrying other ideas of things to try to accomplish before the five days are up.
Ron, why don't you refinish your kitchen cabinets? It's LOADS of fun!
-
DR Tomovoz, your Cotton-Top Tamarin is very handsome.
-

They were included in one of the laserdisc DAWN OF SOUND packages many years ago that I couldn't afford at the time ($100) so I've never seen them, and I feared I never would.

Isn't this Saturday?
-
I just got back from lunch (Subway) and was going to get my hair cut (so that I'll look smashing for Sunday's PNW HHW get-together), but the place that I go (only $10!) was closed. I'll try again on Wednesday or I may have to wait until next week.
George, we have to look nice on Sunday? I need more than six days notice for that.
-
I'm leaving work early. It's not that I don't have work to do, but the building is practically empty! I'm off to dinner. :)
-
George, we have to look nice on Sunday? I need more than six days notice for that.
;D I haven't had a hair cut (any of them, actually) in several months and I think it's time. So, don't fell like you have to get all prettyfied just for me. ;)
-
I didn't even really need the scale, just thought it would be fun to see how close I was in my guesstimate. I base everything on how my clothes fit, and I can calculate based on how many inches of waistline I've lost (close to two-and-a-half now).
What's a waistline?
-
What's a waistline?
Don't ask me...I've never had one. ::)
-
Time for dinner. Quoth Jose: "Laters!"
-
Oh my! This could be a long evening!
-
Ben, did Ant come home today?
-
Come on boys (Jose and Ben), let's get posting.
-
DearReaderLaura, did you finish the cabinets?
-
I have nothing much to say, but we must make it to 100.
-
Maybe talk about 98 Degrees
-
Or 99 Luftballoons
-
Or 100 bottles of beer on the wall
-
Or 101 Dalmations
-
Maybe eventually work our way up to 110 In the Shade
-
Sorry, I forgot to log out earlier and have been having a delightful visit with DR Elmore. We had a fun fiesta and reminisced over some photos that I found of the float our community theater group entered in the Middletown Bicentennial Parade. Elmore and I agreed that we remembered staying up all night on July 3, 1976, to "finish" the jesters' costumes.
-
Or a hundred and ten cornets
-
DearReaderLaura, did you finish the cabinets?
Half of them are almost done. A few doors still need a second coat before they go back on. The self-closing hinges I bought won't fit, so I need to get other hinges before I can put any of the doors on.
-
Did Matt say he couldn't wait to see Don Juan's shorts?
Didn't you see them centuries ago?
-
106 posts? At seven-thirty? Well new all-time low, thank you very much.
I just finished a tough three hours of going over all the music from the show so that darling elmore has proper charts to orchestrate from. You know, we had to fix pitches and rhythms and lots of mis-heard wrong lyrics, but it's done and he'll go put the changes in and we'll be able to ship out by the end of the week.
Having a surprise supper with Miss Barbara Deutsch. Marie Callendar's here we come.
-
I've just returned from a delightful evening with DR Ginny, DH Richard, and DS Rob. Between the three dogs in these two houses and my sister-in-law's smoking, my lungs are a nightmare and I coughed through the entire dinner, which was Mexican and festive.
-
Let's have an Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy, shall we? And we've only had two guesses for the trivia contest, both correct I'm happy to say. Shame on those who don't even make an attempt.
-
And now, 30 years later, I'm involved in another 4th of July parade - walking with the Miami Valley Association of Volunteer Administrators in Centerville, OH. All I can say is that in 1976, I wore a much more stunning costume.
-
Thankfully, DR Ginny's margaritas were not too strong or I could never have navigated the treacherous curves of Elk Creek Road tonight. This was the first time I've driven to my brother's after sunset. In the past I was driving the opposite direction to my father's house. Does any of that make sense?
-
Tonight, I shall be watching either Stanley Kubrick's Killer's Kiss or Don Siegel's Madigan, probably the latter rather than the former although it could be the former rather than the latter, depending on how contrary I'm feeling upon my return from supping.
-
DR Ginny and I have a date to catch THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA this weekend. DR Cillaliz, did you see it today?
-
I want the names of the errant and truant. I want them writ large, baby.
-
Writ large, do you hear?
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
I'm starving - haven't eaten one item of food yet.
-
I may have to have some onion rings this evening. Maybe.
-
I didn't mention DR Ginny's salsas: bloody Mary pineapple. I preferred the spicy blody Mary, but both were quite tasty.
And so the frenzy ends!
-
DR Elmore - I'm glad you made it back to your brother's safely.
'night!
-
Writ those names large.
-
Well, no one can say we didn't make it to page five. Well, they can say it but they'd be LYING!
-
Why is dear reader Laura just sitting there like so much fish. And where in tarnation is Pogue all the time? Sitting in his T-shirt and underpants taking in the Kentucky heat?
-
I am my own Frenzy.
elmore, do you mind if all the tempo markings say "tempo a la elmore"?
-
I don't need anyone else here - I'll plant my own tree, baby, and I'll watch it grow.
I'm NEELY O'HARAAAAAAAAAAA!
-
Perhaps I'll be the lone poster on page five.
-
No, the frenzy continues. DR Ginny's photos of the 1976 July 4 parade were a hoot, and she looked beautiful in a Victorian gown from ariound 1880. I looked like a thinner unmade bed in my shorts and CANDIDE (1973 revival) T-shirt. I loved that shirt so much, I had three or four of them and wore them with any tasteful ensemble. Oh, I had hair then as well. Brown hair.
I look like a HAIR reject.
-
But for now I must away to sup with Miss Barbara Deutsch. Surprise me - let's have four hundred postings by the time I return, or, by the time I get to Phoenix.
-
DR Elmore - I'm glad you made it back to your brother's safely.
'night!
Thanks again for the great evening! Now the frenzy ends.
-
Dear reader Laura has seen fit to partake of the entertainment but not CONTRIBUTE!
And no one comments on our brilliant word of the day? Can anyone tell me what motion picture advertising campaign used a form of the word UXORIOUS?
-
Now the frenzy ends? Not on your tintype, mister.
-
I am my own Frenzy.
elmore, do you mind if all the tempo markings say "tempo a la elmore"?
As long as I can read it and it isn't Tempo di-sturb de neighbors!
Am I getting any tape of Guy Haines singing the score for a feeling of mood and style? And a script?
-
This is my final performance.
-
This is my absolutely final, farewell performance.
-
This is my final USA performance before my probably final European tour!
-
Color me Barbra!
-
Or Madonna!
-
Ohmigod, I feel like I'm channeling DR Francois.
-
Pogue in a t-shirt and shorts? From the photos I've seen on HHW, I thought all he could afford was a loincloth. (Kidding, really! I really am channeling Francois now.)
-
Wsa the film to promote itself using UXORIOUS indeed THE ENGLISH PATIENT, per its director's Oscar acceptance speech noted way above?
-
So, three weeks from tomorrow, the day of my regularly-scheduled 6-month check-up, I will have that, the root canal, and the permanent crown to replace the temporary I'm now wearing. Yay!
I've never quite seen this sentiment expressed before ;D
-
Why is dear reader Laura just sitting there like so much fish.
I didn't logout while I was proofreading a story.
-
Dear reader Laura has seen fit to partake of the entertainment but not CONTRIBUTE!
I've been posting between the exciting happenings of my day.
-
This is the dawning of the age of uxorious
-
But uxoriously, folks...take my wife, please!
-
Uxorious-grateful, regretful-happy
-
DR Ginny and I have a date to catch THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA this weekend. DR Cillaliz, did you see it today?
No, Paul couldn't make up his mind which show he wanted to go to, and I don't see the point in paying full price to go at night when we can go during the day. So, maybe tomorrow. I also want to see AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH. I may do that tomorrow. I have a feeling it won't be here as long as THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
-
The heartbreak of uxorious
-
Is Anthony Minghella still married to the wife who taught him the meaning of uxoriousness?
-
Perhaps if my ex had been more uxorious, we would still be married!
-
Wasn't Uxorious one of the characters in FORUM?
-
Som say he's uxorious, some say he's whipped!
-
The origin of the word is Latin
-
Was uxorious the ad campaign for I AM MY OWN WIFE? :)
-
So is July 3 Independence Eve?
-
In Jersey, the word is pronounced: uck-sorry-ass
:)
-
Of course if we want to be historically correct, yesterday was the day they signed the declaration etc. Adams thought July 2 would be celebrated from thence forward.
-
Was uxorious the ad campaign for I AM MY OWN WIFE? :)
OOOOO that's a good one
-
I'll tell you about Independence Eve, all about Independence Eve.
-
I'll tell you about Independence Eve, all about Independence Eve.
Well.......
-
Watched some entertaining things on TV tonight.
I began with LEMONY SNICKET'S SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS. Certainly the movie was entertaining, but Jim Carrey has a way of wearing out his welcome with me in just about everything he does. He can be so entertaining in small doses and so irritating in large doses (like here) though I will say he seems to be having a ball playing all these characters.
-
Independence Eve met Independence Margo at a tryout in Philadelphia. And the rest is history.
-
THE CLOSER did feature DOuglas Sills as the guest star (you were completely correct DR TPunk), and a subplot involved Brenda's 40th birthday.
Even though it was more than a decade ago, I remember the trauma of my 40th birthday, too.
-
Finished up with a CSI:MIAMI rerun looking as splashily colorful as ever in HD.
-
Speaking of Eve, a friend was working at North Shore Muisc Theater when Dorothy Collins was appearing in APPLAUSE. And he swears people would call asking for tickets to Dorothy Collins in APPLESAUCE.
-
I recorded MEDIUM tonight to watch tomorrow, and I'll be scouring the archives here for just the right movies and/or TV DVDs to watch tomorrow.
-
Hey DR Ginny, don't we get to see some of those photos?? I want to see you in your Victorian gown and to see Larry with hair!
-
Ooooohhhhh! I just watched the spooky Mexican film THE WITCH'S MIRROR (1960)....oOOOOOOH!
It was fun!
-
DR Ron, the Leslie Jordan show sounded very involving. Glad you enjoyed yourself.
-
DR Jose and I walked by the crew setting up or taking down a set from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA whilst during our New York visit last year!
-
I am now going to watch something Egyptian from the 1950s.
-
Independence Eve met Independence Margo at a tryout in Philadelphia. And the rest is history.
OHHH I get it ....All About Independence Eve....I'm a little slow tonight
-
My sister played Margo in APPLAUSE at Iowa State a hundred years ago. She was also Mame in both high school and college productions. Funny they should both come up in todays discussion
-
Ok, let's push this baby past 200....there are enough of us here to do it
-
Who's That Girl with the permanent wave? It's Cilla's sister!
-
Cat update. They were very interested in each other at 5:00AM. Bootsie took a tour later while Callie was behind closed doors. Callie came out ready for battle and Bootsie wasn't here. That was actually very funny. She was all arched up and hissing and then saw it was just me and had this 'Oh, you aren't the one I was planning to attack' look on her face....all dressed up with no place to go
-
Bootsie has been acting pretty sad - sort of like kitty held hostage day 7. So today I noticed she's healed very well from surgery and the ears were good - so we played with cat toys in the living room, the dining room and her room. She has been sleeping ever since
-
Of course I'm not getting a thing done. I guess that's life when you have Margo (Callie) and Eve (Bootsie) living in the same place
-
Ok, what else do I know....hm.....not too much
-
I have been watching Treasure Hunter's and playing along with the challenges online. I have absolutely no time in Aug to be flown to wherever the winner goes to participate in a chance to win $200,000, but somehow, I think I can arrange it if I get the call
-
21 to go....surely we can do that
-
I'm in heaven, it's page seven... let's all do a cheek to cheek
-
Dance that is
-
FJL, MBarnum, MattH Help me here...
-
I'm told it's time to go to sleep. Good night, all.
-
Maybe it was just a dream
-
That wasn't intersting, but it WAS a post.
-
to make it to 200 posts on Independence Eve
-
Meaning my last post, that is.
-
But I think not.
-
For tomorrow is the day we must be kind to our web footed friends, for a duck may be somebody's mother
-
Oh you can stay for 10 more
-
And remember to be kind to your friends in the swamp, where the weather is cool and damp
-
It's almost America's 230th birthday. Does anyone know the words to "Fireworks?"
-
I forget the rest....something about you may think that this is the end....
-
I was always too busy playing the piccolo to sing along
-
Light the sparklers (or shparklers, as Ms. Lansbury seems to say on the Mame cast album)...
-
I did a search... there are lots of "fireworks lyrics" out there
-
Crash the symbols...
-
Personally, I think the national anthem should be "America the Beautiful"
-
Blow the bugle...It's 200!!!!
-
Pull out the stops
-
I think I'll be heading off to bed now.
Good night.
-
Our work is done!
-
We're over 200 hoo and ray
-
Night
-
But now I want to get to page 8 before midnight.
-
Well, time to check on the cats and get some sleep. I'm sure they will want to see each other bright and early and will have no qualms waking me up to tell me that. Happy 4th
-
Oh, the HHW clock is ahead of my computer clock.
-
Oh all right let's go
-
Night, Cilla!
-
It's a head of mine too, I say we still have 2 minutes, it's not too late
-
Page 8....night!
-
Night, all!
-
I guess I might as well get myself to post #2600, too! :)
-
That was quite the frenzy Cillaliz and FJL!
-
15 minutes into my Egyptian musical comedy from 1957 (MODERN GIRLS) and I now have a new favorite actor...Mr. Ahmed Ramzy!
-
I remember the tomb of Ramzy III. (Only from my history books!) Surely this one must be Ramzy The MMIVCLVI
-
I have been truant for much of the day - funeral and wake.
One of the songs played at the funeral was "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today". Even given my distate for the singer it was the worst recording (yes worse than Neil Diamond's) I have yet heard.
Ms Bette Midler.
-
Thank you Dear Reader Laura. I have yet to meet the Cotton-Top. I hope to do so in the next week or so.
-
No one, not even MBarnum, can guess the movie campaign that used a variant of uxorious in their ads? Hint: William Castle.
-
Had a lovelier than lovely meal at Marie Callendar's with Miss Barbara Deutsch. We talked about everything under the sun and a few things under the moon.
-
Now I shall try to watch a DVD.
-
Didn't you see them centuries ago?
Only after you washed them!
-
No, Paul couldn't make up his mind which show he wanted to go to, and I don't see the point in paying full price to go at night when we can go during the day. So, maybe tomorrow. I also want to see AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH. I may do that tomorrow. I have a feeling it won't be here as long as THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Well, if Al Gore and the scientists are correct, neither will we, baby, neither will we.
-
I'm heading off to bed - yorzeit for my dad today, kinda melancholy. The candle is still burning. The next door neighbors are blowing up about a thousand dollars worth of fireworks! Pop! Pop! Pop! Wheeeeeeeee! Za-zoooo! Pop! Pop! I was over there for a little while - yup, fireworks! Always like 'em.
-
So, what'll I sleep to tonight? Hmmmm.... maybe something Indiana Jones-ish... maybe The Freshman. Oh, so many decisions... Anyhow, good night, ol' pals and new.
-
Speaking of The Big Sleep. It should happen to me - I tend toward several small ones. Fingers x'd for a few good solid hours of oblivion.
-
And so, to bed. A letto, a letto... Andiam...
-
(little MacBeth reference, there)
-
I'm sleepy, but am now engrossed in the DVD I'm watching, Mr. Don Siegel's film Madigan.
-
Of course, if we have some peace and quiet in the morning, I'd love to sleep in.
-
It's been pretty loud in my neighborhood. There are a couple of groups in the area that are setting off fireworks. :P It seems that all they do is make noise. Where's the fun in that?
-
No one, not even MBarnum, can guess the movie campaign that used a variant of uxorious in their ads? Hint: William Castle.
I haven't a clue, but I have been trying to figure it out!
-
Rodzinski here, checking in from the West Coast. And I don't mean Kentucky. Currently at my sister's place in Berkeley. She took me to an Oakland A's game this evening after which there were some excellent fireworks. TPunk is in San Jose with her mother. Sis and I shall drive there tomorrow and pick those guys up and go to a 4th parade in Morgan Hill, Cal.
We have been flitting hither and yon, Northwest misplaced TPunk's bag on the flight out here, but it did get delivered by the next morning. Actually they just left it out on her mom's porch, which is odd. I slept most of Saturday due to the redeye flight. We have gone swimming a bit, and I have done some music shopping.
Hope everyone is okay here! TPunk's mom does not have a decent computer with internet, so it is hard to post unless you can get ahold of her laptop.
Reminder to BK that we shall be in your neck of the woods Wednesday!
-
Welcome to the West Coast, Rodzinski! Too bad you won't be up here in the Northwest on Sunday. :)
-
TOD: I have worked for a couple remarkably bad and strange bosses. The worst was a pseudo-literary agent, who, I came to figure out, was basically defrauding people left and right. She would take money from anyone on earth who paid her, and she did absolutely nothing for them. Her paranoia was also incredible.
The other freaky boss was an insane photographer, who somehow talked her way into the houses of very wealthy people in Greenwich, Connecticut, to try and convince various trophy wives to let her shoot portraits of them. She was so nuts, I promise you would think I was making stuff up about her if I told you the full range of her quirks. I was her assistant for two weeks.
-
I know, George! I wish we had just a few more days to head up north. As it is, it is going to be difficult to get on the plane next Monday to head back East. I enjoy the west coast vibe.
