Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not a day early, and now it is time for you to post until the day early cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PERSIFLAGE!
-
First post after BK.
-
Now, I will say good night.
Good night.
-
First post after Tom's first two posts.

~~~Excellent Preventative Vibes and Xylophones for BK!!~~~
-
Good night, Tom.
-
And now, I'm off.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all.
-
I must remember to go to the new building today when I get to work.
-
Thunderstorms through the night. Sleep was a little too shallow.
-
TCB, are you feeling any better about the move? Or is it too soon?
I am pleased to announce that the audio edition of my one-person play, CLIFTON WEBB is now available for download via audible.com, Amazon and iTunes.
John Boulanger is magnificent as the late stage and screen actor, who starred in such classic films as LAURA, SITTING PRETTY, TITANIC (1953), STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER and THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN.
The radio show-like audio production is enhanced with music and sound effects.
Good morning, all!
-
This was my first chance this week to catch up on sleep, and I sorta did, but two cats and a kitten don't make it easy.
-
I will spend this morning and tomorrow tidying up the apartment, which needs it badly. This afternoon I will head over to the 92nd Street Y for the dress rehearsal.
-
Tomorrow I hope to start pulling books I no longer need. I've got six cartons waiting for them. Since my last vacuum cleaner died, I've been way too casual making do with the dust buster. When the 92nd Street Y money arrives, I'm getting a new vacuum and a new pair of glasses.
DR JohnG, I haven't seen South Pacific since I was 13 or so. I loved it then, so I should watch it again. I remember weeping profusely through the last half hour of the film.
Now I'm going to hop on my soap box for a minute since the continual sniggering comments about bare-chested men in a Josh Logan film or show on Facebook drive me mad. I have much respect for him as a writer and director, and clearly many did because his prolific career proves it. Reducing his work to undressed men - yes, he was bisexual but his main preference in a closeted period of time was for men - denigrates much of his good work. And I know he made some lousy films, but I sure love his Picnic, Bus Stop, Fanny, and Mr Roberts.
-
No sickness vibes for MR BK.
-
GOOD GRIEF!!!
DR JANE I am sorry I mislabeled the picture.....I was doing several things at once and I should NOT multitask......
-
I watched Morituri a couple of times.....I don't think I saw it all the way through either time....but Marlon Brando is always nice to see....
-
We have a new JUDY in Send Me No Flowers.....our Judy got a paying gig at a theatre in a nearby town.
Unfortunately our old Judy was way too young for our George....and our New Judy is ten years younger than SHE is....
We shall see what happens....I'm just here to sell cemetery plots.
However the director did decide to use Doris singing the title song as the tag of the show going into the bows.
I got teary near the end, too.
I like much of Logan’s work in films (not Camelot), and it was a thrill meeting him at your alma mater, when he came to the area for a speech.
My comment of the beefcake was precisely because of what you said. Everyone talks about it, even harps about it, and so what? The movie was still good. In the next few weeks, I‘ll watch the edited version, which loses the intermission plus.
-
I heard from Rob Berman. Rehearsal at 1:00 so I'll leave here at noon.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Late one for me this time. Just been lazing around enjoying a very slow start to the day.
-
Good morning!
-
This evening I'm dropping by the Bedford Playhouse to hear a musician friend play and sing Elton John songs in conjunction with the ROCKETMAN movie playing afterward. But I'll only be there to hear his music, then I'm off to another town and another theater where a director friend's production of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is opening.
Betwixt now and then, I'll just be relaxing - and brushing up on Disaster! which rehearses on Sunday.
-
Friday morning greetings! After 3 days of car logistics - mine Tuesday and Thursday and Rob's on Wednesday - Richard and I are enjoying a slow start today. Nothing was life-threatening or bad, just things that had to be done that required some mental exertion and a bit of driving. All is settled now and my new car is all mine. Thanks for all the good wishes in that regard!
-
The South Pacific movie was a monumental thing for me in my pre-teen and teen years.
I didn't know from Josh Logan back in those days, but I'm one of the apparent few who always loved his color hues in the film. At one point (way before home video) when I hadn't seen it in many years, and then saw a revival, I felt that I recognized every shading in certain scenes. If they'd ever been successful in removing those, I can only imagine I'd find it quite flat in those moments. But who knows.
As for the roadshow version, I believe I only watched that once when the first 2-disc DVD set came out, and I barely remember any of the differences now. Must go back to that. It actually seems a bit strange that I wouldn't have immediately embraced that, but for one thing, unlike the general release version it was never restored to any degree and it isn't even in HD on the Blu-ray. Maybe that's why. Because the theatrical version in HD is one of the glories of home video. It's simply spectacular.
-
TOD - I've been watching THE CROWN on Netflix and have one more episode in season 2. That will be my viewing for today.
-
I admit I enjoy it when it works, but I do think the dramatic line gets crossed when bodies are on the screen when they really don't 100% need to be for the drama or song. I loved "South Pacific," but when John Kerr's tone was so lovingly filmed, even as a kid, it shifted from being about Lt. Cable to what incredible shape the actor John Kerr was in.
When Stephen Spinella stripped down onstage even in "Angels in America," looking emaciated, if you thought only that's Prior Walter naked and emaciated rather than "So that's what Stephen Spinella looks like naked, still kind of sexy, even though so unusually thin" you are a better playgoer than I. I hope even a great actor isn't chosen over other great actors especially for his ability to look emaciated.
Likewise for pecs and abs, and (as Maltby says, I'm not complaining) it does seem that some actors in "South Pacific" were chosen with eye appeal for the camera as part of the thought process.
But really, I'm not complaining - yer it's worth noticing even when geniuses are at work why certain choices were made.
(I hope we're not there as a society yet, but worry we may already have been in the 1990s even with some award-winning plays, that equally excellent actors may be quietly chosen with unspoken regard to how well their private parts "read" on the stage, all talent and correctness for the role being equal.)
-
Haven't the physical attributes always been inherent in choices of actors and actresses?
I personally find no issue with a little eye candy here and there and I don't think it takes me out of the show.
As far as having some good looking male bodies on screen I say go for it, I care not for the directors motivation...if someone brings in a box of candy for me to share, I for one shall dive in, no questions asked
-
As that's all I have to say about that
-
I'm up, I'm up - not sure how much sleep I got as I was up a few times, but I was in bed by one and asleep soon thereafter, so maybe I got eight hours overall.
On that site that listed What If for license - I ultimately traced the contact person on Google, found a gmail address and wrote her - she just responded, so now I can ask the question.
Apparently Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon are fully nude at the start of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de la Lune.
-
Big fuss about that in the reviews.
-
Had a lovely lunch of a clam boil with sausage and corn. Then an overpriced boring ice cream sandwich.
-
Apparently Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon are fully nude at the start of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de la Lune.
That's one I'd forgotten about. I saw it at the Mark Taper around, oh, hmm.... late 1980s? I don't even remember who I saw in it! But I believe they were both very good.
Was that Kathy Bates in the original? Stanley Tucci and Edie Falco were in the revival, as I recall.
-
What If mystery solved: Apparently, right after the show closed, I had a meeting with this gal and her then-partner and we talked about them licensing it. She thinks I said go ahead and let's see what happens, which is probably accurate, but we never signed anything. She said she'd get the guy to take it off the site, along with the lyrics. Very nice gal - it was all very pleasant.
Found the program. I saw Kathy Bates and Kenneth Welsh. It was in Nov.-Dec. 1988.
Good pick-up rehearsal and then I picked up no packages nor the important envelope, which should have been here today. If it doesn't arrive tomorrow it's going to be a rather hellish and scary weekend.
We had a wonderful day in Versailles. Years ago we did a boring bus tour from Paris and were only given 20 minutes to explore the beautiful town in the rain. Today we took the train there and walked around on this beautiful sunny day. We then met up with a toyr and our excellent tour guide. What hasn't changed are the crowds. We could barely move at times. Getting out to the gardens was a relief.
-
Another walk around the town with a stop for pizza and drinks which included a delicious French wine Blanc Sauvignon for me.
-
A bit more walking and yummy gelato before returning to the train back to Paris.
-
We were not ready for the day to end and stopped at the first outdoor tables with room for all 4 of us. It turned out to be an Armenian restaurant. Apitizers and beer for the guys, wine for me, which I did not finish, and soda water for the 4th person in our group.
Bad wine or not enough time?
While not as good as the wine earlier it was ok. I just didn't think I should drink anymore.
That and the fact I think it's a poor play will keep me away. The movie is much better.
Interesting article DR FJL.
I saw the replacement cast after Bates left. Carol Kane, I think.
-
I remember when OKLAHOMA! first came out in a "collection" version on VHS and it was taken from the TODD AO print that had been the first run version for those theatres that could project the process....other theatres and television and early video versions were the "regular" version that was shot.....and the same time but NOT simultaneously with the T-AO version.....those scenes were shot first, then they changed cameras and did another shot for the other version.
It was interesting seeing the "fresh" takes as opposed to the second takes of the scenes....there really IS a difference.
-
I am home from a long work rehearsal. I think it will be a good show. I also think someone needs to record an Ana Gasteyer album. She's really wonderful.
ChasSmith, any idea when the Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble is happening? I wanna get the upcoming Hedwig release.
Symphony is playing Ravel’s Tzigane tonight. Love that piece.
Work was harder today than yesterday. And one little missy thinks she’s the boss and she ain’t.
But it was a better day.
Well, I need to be going. I got all my time in for this week. Who'da thunk it?? ;) I'm going to my sister's to help her set up for a PFLAG garage sale tomorrow. I'll be helping there tomorrow, also, AND helping move a desk to my parents' house at some point during the sale. It'll be a busy couple of days.
Be back later.
-
But...
-
...before I go...
-
PAGE FOUR DANCE!! ;D
-
Apparently Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon are fully nude at the start of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de la Lune.
That and the fact I think it's a poor play will keep me away. The movie is much better.
As much as I've liked the play all the years, I do think his screenplay is better, pretty remarkable that it's a different experience beyond just the usual opening the play up.
-
Where has everyone been for the past 6 hours?
-
I was at the symphony. The theme was Nomadic Journey, and they played several pieces with Romanian or Hungarian influences, including Brahams' Hungarian Dances and the Hary Janos Suite from Kodaly, which I loved.
But my favorite piece of the evening was new to me, Enescu's Romanian Rhapsody.
-
And what have you been up to, Vixmom? Painting anything lately?
-
I'm started a movie called Becoming Astrid, about the woman who wrote the Pippi Longstocking stories. I have no idea if it's a truthful biopic or not, but it's fairly enjoyable.
-
Horrible story, Vixmom, on a Lutheran minister who was deported with her husband to Colombia.
-
I think I need to retire for the night.
-
Good night, all.
-
Stay well vibes for DR JANE and MR BK.
Thank you, I am trying.
Thank you for posting the photo,
-
Thanks George.
Back from the Group Rep's opening night for Avenue Q. I've never actually seen the show - I saw the cut-down presentation they did of this about five months ago. It's hard to tell if I would have liked it better on Broadway with that cast and staging - here it just went on too long and seemed very repetitious. I understand the producers insisted on giving it "heart" but it's so shoehorned in - obviously it worked, given the show's six and a half year run. Better pacing would help and certainly better sound - they use tracks as we did for A Carol Christmas and they tried to copy what we did in terms of miking, with the difference being we had a professional designer. They have three foot mics (the flat kind) and two hanging mics - but they only seem to pick up certain cast members while leaving a couple out in the cold. The cast was mostly fine, and the audience was all friends and family so the reaction was what you'd expect.
-
I stopped at Rite-Aid and got Airborne and their equivalent of Coldeez - same exact ingredients - and now I'm home resting. I really should not have gone out and the theater was a bit cold, but I had my overcoat.
-
After work, I went to my sister's to help her set up her carport for the PFLAG garage sale.
-
I brought over a few things to contribute to the cause.
-
My sister had some roofing shingles in her shed that had been there for years.
-
We brought them out front and hopefully someone will want them.
-
Hi, jan.
-
Page 4?
-
After all that organizing, I went to Fred Meyer and did a little shopping.
-
Seriously?
-
I got some kitty litter...
-
...and some cheese.
-
The last few days have been killers.
-
Where has everyone been lately?
-
I also got some balsamic vinegar and olive oil...they were both on sale.
-
Hi, Tom.
-
We were really soaring again for a few weeks.
-
Tomorrow, I'll go help at the actual garage sale.
-
Now stupid Tom has to offer up dumb posts, just to turn the page.
I did PRESENT LAUGHTER, the season before. That was one of my favorite roles I have ever done.
