Monday morning greetings! On what should be a workday for me, I have day of medical leave to take my mother to Cincinnati for an appointment with an eye specialist. We have a couple of other errands, so I will probably be E & T most of the day.

Good morning all. I'm at work, but not too awake, hopefully my coffee will kick in soon.
The cats have decided to have a fight every night as soon as I turn off my light to go to sleep. Last night I had it. I put Boo - who has become the instigator and attacker - in her room and shut the door. You'd think I chopped off her leg. They were both extremely upset about that. As soon as she was calm and quiet for awhile I let her out....right back at it.
I had to do that three times, but finally she just came into my room, jumped on the bed and went to sleep.

The weather here today is beautiful! It's been soooo humid and today the air is much drier. It feels great. The weather forecast is highs in the 80s all week. The weatherman said you have to go back 3 months to find a week where we didn't hit the 90s. That's really unusual for here.

We're inching back toward near-90 today, so I guess our little fall preview is now at an end. I did enjoy it supremely!
I got to luxuriate one more night with cool outside air and no need for a ceiling fan or central A/C spoiling the fresh air.
Beautiful outside right now, but it is going to get hot. Blah!

Put me down as another HUGE Calvin & Hobbes fan. Really loved it and bought some C&H collections just so I could continue to enjoy them after the talented creator decided to walk away from it after only 10 years.

Other than a new episode of THE CLOSER tonight, I still have no definite plans for viewing today.
I do have MR. AND MRS. SMITH recorded last night, but I'm not ready for another MR. MOTO quite yet. I've got CITY FOR CONQUEST readied for viewing, too, but may hold off on it a few days as well. It's such a downer.

SPeaking of CITY FOR CONQUEST, I was quite surprised watching one of the special features on THINK FAST MR. MOTO to learn about Harvey Parry. He was Peter Lorre's stunt man during the MOTO series and also did stunts for James Cagney in many films as well as serving as his boxing opponents in the four fight films Cagney did. He was even his stand in for RAGTIME. An interesting little featurette though, of course, these mini-documentaries about the unknown talents behind-the-scenes are never long enough for me.

The documentary I watched last night on the THANK YOU, MR. MOTO DVD was about producer Sol Wurtzel, another name I wasn't familiar with but learned some really fascinating information about him in the featurette. Who knew he was head of Fox's West Coast operations for many years? Can't believe I hadn't glimpsed his name in the credits of some of his films, but I hadn't.
The little film also gave some facts about Fox founder William Fox which I didn't know. Very interesting man. A more complete documentary on him is obviously needed.

A RECIPE FOR ZUCCHINI FRITTERS
Serves 4
1 pound zucchini (about 2 medium)
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon freshly grated lemon zest (1 lemon), plus 1 lemon for garnish, cut into 8 wedges (optional)
10 sprigs fresh flat-leaf parsley, stems removed and leaves finely chopped, plus more sprigs for garnish (optional)
1medium clove garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 to 4 tablespoons olive oil
1. Using the large holes of a box grater, grate zucchini into a medium bowl. Add salt, lemon zest, chopped parsley, garlic, pepper, and eggs. Mix well to combine. Slowly add flour, stirring so no lumps form.
2. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat until oil sizzles when you drop a small amount of zucchini mixture into the pan. Carefully drop about 2 tablespoons zucchini mixture into pan; repeat, spacing fritters a few inches apart.
3. Cook fritters until golden, 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce heat to medium. Turn fritters, and continue cooking until golden, 2 to 3 minutes more. Transfer fritters to a plate; set aside in a warm place. Cook remaining zucchini mixture, adding more oil to pan if necessary. Garnish with parsley sprigs and lemon wedges, if desired; serve.

I spent a few hours this weekend with the recent Criterion Collection release of Emeric Pressburger's and Michael Powell's "A Canterbury Tale."
It was a very satisfying film, I must say. The story is by Powell and it was filmed in Kent where he was a boy and where his father was a (gentleman) farmer who grew hops.
It's a bit unusual as a mystery in that it revolves around an investigation by a trio of military people (one British female, one British male and one American male) into the exploits/identity of "the glueman" who, at night only, and sporadically, attacks women by putting glue in their hair.
The motive behind these attacks is kind of funny, but the investigation is sincere and takes the trio across some interesting and beautiful topography in Kent. Another key player is the local magistrate who gives "lantern" lectures on local history and has a keen interest in the 600-year-old tales by Chaucer.
They are intended to be, ultimately, three more pilgrims who wind up in nearby Canterbury to do penance or seek miracles.
American non-actor (but real Army sergeant) is John Sweet who has an interesting interview on the supplemental disc. The female star was Sheila Sim who is married to Richard Attenborough, actor/director -- or, rather, Lord and Lady Attenborough, as they are now known.
There are some extraordinary moments in this leisurely film...and it captures a time/place that is eminently nostalgic. The production values are extremely high, as befits an Archers production. The black-and-white DVD transfer was immaculate to my eyes. The film score by Allan Gray was a revelation. Camerawork was gorgeous.
The supplementals include a couple of documentaries, one recent (and based on moments in the film) and one from the early 1940s -- "Listen to Britan" that is mesmerizing.
I highly recommend it all.

No, it's the Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt MR. AND MRS. SMITH. I didn't have time this afternoon to watch it since lunch ran long. I checked the DVR, and it's exactly two hours, so I'll watch it tomorrow.
I think tonight before THE CLOSER comes on, I'll watch NBC's telecast of PSYCH from two weeks ago. I've seen it, of course, but this should be in high definition, and I'll get to see how cute James Roday is in high def. He's adorable in the standard defintion that USA broadcasts the show in.

Instead, this afternoon, I dubbed TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE onto a DVD-R. It's as deeply saturated as the laserdisc color-wise, and the image is somewhat sharper, so this will be the version I'll watch of this film from now on until Warners sees fit to offer us a commercial DVD of this charming film.

Yes, you heard that right - didn't get to jog until 1:15 because of dealing with some annoyances this morning, then a Terry Trotter meeting and a ton of telephonic calls, one of which seems interesting. Must now go pick up mail at the mail place and maybe get something to eat, then I must spend the rest of the afternoon writing.

Back from transporting my mother to the eye specialist in Cincinnati. On the way, we stopped at Bed, Bath, & Beyond to exchange the bedspread I took her there to buy 3 weeks ago, spent an hour or so at Border's, and had lunch at the Honey Baked Ham store/cafe. Her exam revealed nothing to worry about and the new bedspread is much more to her liking.

Well, today I went to lunch with my friend Margo (as usual) and she was talking about how her daughter is in Portland and has an audition today. It's a group audition for about 50 different theater groups (so she says) and Alexis (Margo's daughter) is singing a song from JRB's The Last Five Years and that she's met an accompanist who knows JRB, has two kids and whose name is Jeffrey! This must be our very own JMK!! Of course, I've met, chatted and dined with JMK in person and now my co-worker's daughter just happened to meet him, too! What a small world!! ;D
I have the song that JMK needed, but sadly, my scanner isn't working, so I couldn't help him with the audition. :(

Der Brucer and I had an update on how Angie is doing.
Remember Angie, the black Lab/retriever mix we fostered for a while?
We hadn't delivered her papers to her new family, with all her shots information and such, and there had been a mix-up on phone numbers. The rescue society finally got around to connecting us with her family, and yesterday we drove over for the delivery.
Well, Angie is doing just great! She is clearly happy with her home and family, and is having a great time being trained by them. They all love her, too.
That's the good news. The bad news is that when the rescue society called Angie's new dad, they gave him a horrible rant about how he hadn't paid them enough for the dog, that he wasn't fit to be an owner, just on and on for about twenty minutes or so. Mind, these people had never met the new dad, wouldn't know him from Adam. I don't know how he managed to put up with that rant for that long.
But the odds are that we won't be hearing from the society again. They're royally p*$$ed at der Brucer for handing over Angie without getting the extra fifty bucks, for one thing. Also, their website hasn't added any doggie profiles since der B ticked them off, which makes it seem very much like they're out of the business. Which is just as well, given their attitudes.
Thus ends another chapter in our lives. At least we found five good homes for five wonderful dogs.

He founded a religion called "Religious Science," and it has many similar ideas and tenets as found in "Unity" and "Christian Science."

Has a picture been taken with all the different generations? Shortly after my niece was born, they got a picture with five generations of my niece's father's family...my niece, her mother (my sister), her father and aunt (her father's sister), her grandmother (father's mother), great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother (who died a couple of years later).

Not as yet DR George. Logistics and distance don't make it easy but I hope it will happen. Even if it is a compromise with just members of each generation. My father has not met any of his great great grandchildren.

Most of the script worked to our satisfaction at the staged reading, but what didn't work was very obvious to both of us - we were on exactly the same page about fixes, most of which had to do with two characters, and strengthening the hero of the show and his family. Even though it's a sendup, I feel you have to believe in the characters who have something to lose, i.e. their humanity.

Had some fun viewing tonight. Started off with THE MUPPET SHOW with Elton John.
Can he ever have been so youthful and fit? (Can I ever have been?) Just scary to see him in this period of his career.
Funny how I see movie stars who had long career like Crawford, Davis, Wayne, etc. and their changes over the years I can take with the blink of an eye. But seeing the young Elton John tonight REALLY made me feel supremely OLD.

PSYCH in high definition was a lot of fun. It was that fun case about the missing $5 million antique engagement ring (I think this was the third episode of the series). NBC probably won't show many more of the episodes on Monday nights, but I certainly enjoyed seeing this one in widescreen.

THE CLOSER had a episode with a wonderful twist in the middle of the show, but apart from that, I guessed this week's murderer pretty easily. (Admittedly, the list of suspects was pretty thin this week.)
And the interrogations of Brenda concerning her past association with Will Pope gave another dimension to the show with brenda feeling vulnerable and in danger of losing what she's fought so hard to achieve at the LAPD - respect.

Tonight's MEDIUM repeat had some scary moments, but I remember commenting during the season that I found the resolution much too quick and too pat. I still feel it was.

Before PSYCH came on, I put in FORBIDDEN PLANET. Since a new remastered special edition disc is coming in a few months, I figured I'd watch this old transfer one last time since I will likely never see this DVD again once I get the new version (unless Warners manages to botch it up.)

I just watched the first episode on my budget DVD of 12 episodes from 1950 THE BUFFALO BILL, JR TV series...it was a lot of fun...that Dick Moore has a whole lot a personality...I don't know how popular this show was, but I hope it did well. I look forward to watching the other 11 episodes on the discs.
Also with this disc were episodes of the 1950s western FRONTIER DOCTOR, which was quite entertaining as well. I watched all 6 episodes a few months back. Had never heard of the show before, but it had some very interesting storylines.
6 episodes of the 1960s comedy/western series PISTOLS AND PETTICOATS filled out the disc...I only got through 2 before giving up. One of my interviewees Dorothy Green appeared in one episode, so at least that was fun. I understand that star Ann Sheridan passed away during the shows run...she looked very ill in the two episodes that I saw.

There is a bumper on TCM right now that has Miss Joanne Woodward dissing Miss Lana Turner's performance in THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE.
I guess miss Woodward's New Yawk/Method/Plain Jane style has always escaped me....but this is too much!!!
Joanne should take another look at her performances in NEW KIND OF LOVE, RALLY ROUND THE FLAG BOYS, and FROM THE TERRACE before she starts throwing around too much criticism. :o

Yes, I remember Ann Sheridan passing away during the run of PISTOLS 'N PETTICOATS. The show's ratings were very poor even before she passed away, and I'm not sure the show made it through an entire season of episodes. I could go look it up. I'm downstairs and the reference books are all upstairs.

Having watched Glenda Jackson in SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY recently and her cameo in THE BOY FRIEND over this past weekend, I got a hankering to see THE MUSIC LOVERS. Came to learn I did not have it on laserdisc, the VHS is pan and scan (it's a Panavision movie), and the DVD is not on the docket for any near future release. (All I had was the soundtrack LP.)

I just watched the first episode on my budget DVD of 12 episodes from 1950 THE BUFFALO BILL, JR TV series...it was a lot of fun...that Dick Moore has a whole lot a personality...I don't know how popular this show was, but I hope it did well. I look forward to watching the other 11 episodes on the discs.

Also with this disc were episodes of the 1950s western FRONTIER DOCTOR, which was quite entertaining as well. I watched all 6 episodes a few months back. Had never heard of the show before, but it had some very interesting storylines.

Plato and Socrates are two of my favorites. The Trial and Death of Socrates is one I'll still pull out and read from time to time.

6 episodes of the 1960s comedy/western series PISTOLS AND PETTICOATS filled out the disc...I only got through 2 before giving up. One of my interviewees Dorothy Green appeared in one episode, so at least that was fun. I understand that star Ann Sheridan passed away during the shows run...she looked very ill in the two episodes that I saw.

We've never adopted the "Native Australian" term for our indigenous people. In some areas they are now referred to as "Koori" people but I think it really only a reference to "Tribes" from S.E. Australia.
