Netflix delivered two documentaries to me today (Elmore, are you proud?!)....THE BLOOD OF MY BROTHER and BALLETS RUSSES. I will now watch one or the other.

And it's soooooo easy to see that none of these people have ever been to an audition of any sort before they went before Randy, Paula and Simon. -And the pre-screeners. None of them have ever been objectively - or subjectively - judged before. And none of them have ever ASKED for someone to give them their thoughts on their supposed talent.

It boggles the mind. It still boggles the mind.

I've never watched American Idol, but I've certainly seen this happen elsewhere. There seems to be little understand of how skills and expertise are developed. And, no, college does NOT teach you everything! (I feel a rant coming on...)

Got home from work in time just for the tail end of Idol. It looked like another freakshow. I can understand the entertainment value, but it gets old pretty quickly for me.

Pretty bad episode if you ask me. It all came so easy for her, for the most part. She just dreamt every bit of the thing. And still all the doubts from the DA, her husband, Scanlon. And none of the kids to brighten things up.

One of the biggest award night shocks I ever had.

The 1966 Emmys. THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW had won the Best Comedy Series Emmy for four years in a row and had gone off the air. The heir apparent was universally proclaimed to be GET SMART. Everyone was expecting GET SMART to win that year. Don Adams won Best COmedy Actor, so it seemed a foregone conclusion.

The winner - THE MONKEES.

The next year, THE MONKEES in its second year on the air wasn't even nominated and was canceled at the end of its second year. GET SMART won the 1967 and 1968 awards for Best Comedy Series.

I watched last night's SVU to begin my evening of viewing. It was an Ice-T-focused episode, which I generally don't like. However, a detective from Brooklyn worked the case with him, and I liked that detective a lot. I wouldn't mind seeing him become a regular on the show, and if NBC doesn't sign Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay for another season, I could see him being brought in as a replacement.

I watched more of TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT, but I didn't quite get to the end of it (about 15 more minutes remain).

Katharine Hepburn was originally signed to play the leading role. She could have played it, but I wonder who they would have gotten to play the younger version of the aunt in the flashbacks. Hepburn could certainly not have played.

One of the great things about hiring Maggie Smith was that she could be made up to play the old eccentric lady but also take the make-up off and play her as a younger woman.

I love Maggie Smith, but it is a VERY stagy performance.

AMERICAN IDOL: well, there were fewer decent singers, but for some reason, I had a better time tonight watching than last night. Some of the backstory pieces last night went on too long. Not so tonight.

For once, I was ahead of Allison and her figuring it out. I even figured out the proof she could use before she dreamed about it. (Noticed it from a previous flashback.)

When I'm able to piece together the dreams before they do it for me, I know it's only an average episode.

I do not watch American Idol, but I have seen clips on tv. I believe some of the bad singers are encouraged and are told they have talent -- so that they can film them and the world can laugh at them. Honestly, most of those folks have to know they are not singers.

We're supposed to get a winter mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain before dawn tomorrow. When I was working, a weather forecast like that would cause me a very sleepless night since I commuted 37 miles to work each day. Would school be called on account of weather? If not, would the roads be passable for ME to get there, and if so, how much extra time would I need to give myself to get there?

Now, I can sleep and not worry about such things. Sheer bliss!

You sir, rule. The good news is, because I was on the lookout for it, I found ADVANCE TO THE REAR, which was on way early one morning, and I never would have known that otherwise.

RIO RITA will put me one step closer to my goal of seeing every Wheeler and Woolsey film. The film that followed it, THE CUCKOOS is quite good, and similarly has some technicolor bits thrown in there.
