Well, you've read the notes, the notes were out at last, and now it is time for you to post until the out at last cows come home.

And the word of the day is: TACTILE!

Notes ingested. Digested.

Today, I'm working concessions for the Olympia Symphony Orchestra. I don't love orchestral music, but I'm sure that it'll be a good concert. Regardless, I'm bringing my Kindle to read out in the lobby during the show. ;)
-
What can one get at the concession stand? Snacks and such?
-
A Kit-Kat bar?

We have Coke, diet Coke, Sprite, Mentos, pretzels, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, cashews, and a couple of other candies. There can also be beer, hard cider and wine. On Washington Center sponsored events, they also hire bartenders and have mixed drinks with hard liquor.

Good morning, all!
-
I had a terrible night of sleep. It was freezing in the apartment, the cats were up in arms, and my legs were killing me.
-
DR singdaw, if I remember correctly after 30 years, cholera in the original Broadway production was a red handkerchief that was passed around.
What I mostly remember about the production was how stunning it looked. Those costumes were stunning, drop-dead gorgeous creations.
-
I don't feel like working much on the ballet today. I'll finish No. 9 and tackle No. 10 tomorrow. I have to answer questions on No. 7 this morning.

That sounds right.
-
What I remember most is the stunning Rebecca Luker.
-
Also, Mandy's spoken dialogue on the final track of the CD always makes me tear up.

Good morning, all.

I haven’t listened to The Secret Garden, either musical version, in years. I shall have to haul them out.
Wasn’t Audra in the chorus of the original?
-
I can watch our church service online and I’ve gotten coverage for my altar duties

Guess I’ll Wordle
-
I like the other version because Barbara Cook and John Cullum are on the recording. And it has a Hilary Knight cover, if I recall correctly.

Congratulations on Wordle, George.

Yup...and she played the Ayah in the national tour that I saw.

I have that CD, and even got the audio cassette with the extra songs. It's a very different musical (the Cravens are cousins instead of brothers), but I like it, too...just not as much as the Norman/Simon version.

Congratulations on Wordle, George.

She was definitely in the national tour with several of my friends.
-
Audra replaced the original Ayah on Broadway.
-
I'm now listening to The Secret Garden OBC. I am frustrated that after the recording - possibly for the national tour - several cuts were made in the score, and these cuts are reflected in the published vocal score. Bill Brohn wrote some beautiful orchestrations; he was a strange man who apparently liked his assistants to be buff young men, so he was always friendly bu clearly uninterested in my working with him.

TSA says peanut butter is a liquid.
-
U.K. airports plan to phase out their liquid restrictions by 2024 as they install higher-tech screening machines. Unfortunately we won't be doing that.
-
Curious if anyone has ever used the peanut butter powder. It's supposed to have less fat, but I don't really know anything about it.
-
Good -- oh my goodness -- afternoon, all.
-
I had to play a church service this morning. The service was fine but I was miserable because I found yesterday afternoon that I had a cold. Some nose running is involved, but this one is mainly a throat and cough thing, and this morning I was concentrating all I could to suppress sudden unseemly outbursts. There still were a couple of sudden unseemly outbursts, of course. And one was a SNORT. Oh, the humiliation.
So I have twenty-four hours (before the first Addams dressrehearsal) in which to feel better and find what works best to keep the coughing down. I'll need to get some more Robitussin C, for sure. And I can probably benefit from popping some Day-Quil to help stifle it for a few hours.
-
Loved the Secret Garden report from BK. Well, I didn't LOVE it so much as find it incredibly fascinating.
Between the apparent "directing" philosophy on exhibit and the embarrassing teeny tiny orchestra, it sounds like that production should be run out of town on a rail. After being tarred and feathered.
Good to hear about Ava Madison Gray saving the day, to the extent she can.
-
DR Elmore, thank you for those links. I've watched the 1991 Tonys one and will watch them all. Looking forward to watching that Seattle production.
I wish I had returned to see the Broadway production again. So much of it is a vague memory.
-

I listened to The Secret Garden Broadway cast and the London production this morning. When Rebecca Luker, who owns that role, began "How Could I Ever Know," I completely lost it and cried like a baby. I loved her so much.
-
The score is really good, much better than I thought at the time I saw the show. I have both the London and Australian recordings and when I get the time, I want to compare Bill Brohn's orchestrations, since I suspect London and Australia use the reduced touring orchestrations instead of the full 1991 Broadway charts.
-

Damn. It would be so great to see the original scores. I have the vocal score (or is it a PDF?) and a PDF full score that's typeset and includes absolutely ZERO information as to its provenance, date, etc etc etc.

The rental orchestration:
1 Piano-Conductor
3 Reeds
2 Horns
1 Trumpet
1 Trombone
1 Keyboard 1
1 Keyboard 2
1 Percussion
1 Violin 1
1 Violin 2
1 Viola
1 Cello
1 Bass
-
The original Broadway orchestration:
4 Reeds
3 horns
Trumpet/Flugelhorn
Trombone/Tuba
Guitar
Dulcimer/Guitar
Percussion
Harp
Violins
Viola
Cello
Bass (& Fender Bass)
-
Okay, this full score matches the rental. and the three reeds are Fl/Picc, Ob/E.Hn, Bb/Bs Clar. - throughout, looks like.
But interestingly, no nod to acoustic bass. It's specified electric, and is on the score between the percussion and keyboards.
-
I'm almost positive Mandy wasn't in it when I saw it, but I can't find my program.

I'm almost positive Mandy wasn't in it when I saw it, but I can't find my program.
Howard McGillin replaced Mandy.
Here's the Broadway orchestra (24 players):
Conducted by Michael Kosarin; Associate Conductor: Jeanine Levenson; Keyboard: Jeanine Levenson; Bass: Jeffrey Carney; Guitar: Kevin Kuhn; Hammered Dulcimer: Steve Schneider; Harp: Susan Jolles; Percussion: James Saporito; Trumpet: Neil Balm; Trombone: Matt Finders; French Horn: Kaitilin Mahoney, Katharine Dennis and Leise Anschuetz Paer; Woodwinds: Keith Underwood, Andrew Sterman, Vicki Bodner and Don McGeen; Concert Master: Dale Stuckenbruck; Violins: Cecelia Hobbs Gardner, Ann Labin, Jean "Rudy" Perrault, Evan Johnson and Yong Tae Kim; Viola: Julien Barber; Cello: Mark Shuman and Maria Kitsopoulous

Susan Jolles!
Is she still working? I hope she is well.
-
I'm up, I'm up - nine hours of good sleep.
-
Interesting links. The B'way set looks spare, too, until the end, but isn't plagued by a dreary look or a big S in the middle of the stage taking up way too much room. In the LA production, Lily is dressed all in white like a ghost, instead of that gorgeous dress Luker is wearing. The door to the garden is upstage, which is perfect - her it's downstage and when she opens it she's looking at the audience. Eh. Mandy's round shoulder is very subtle in the costume, but he's acting it with posture and semi-limp. The Seattle looks more opulent to me.
-

I don't know if she played DEAR WORLD or not. I'll ask Joshie.

Those original costumes for Lily and Rose on Broadway were knockouts. The LA ones look drab by comparison.
-
The original Broadway production had some glorious things about it, but the nitwit director, the self-important Ms S, seemed more concerned to show audiences how many Sondheim shows she had directed, and there were times when all those ghosts running about looked like a revival of FOLLIES. The opening of Act Two had everyone dressed in white, and my first reaction was welcome to A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, Act Two!

Gratuitous post 100.

Thank you for the news about Seattle’s production being online, Elmore. I have never seen the show.

Well, THIS is kind of creepy and HAL-like... in the artificial intelligence realm.
Researchers for GPT4 put its through its paces asking it to try and do things that computers and AI notoriously have a hard time doing. One of those is solving a “captcha” to get into a website, which typically requires a human to do manually. So the programmers instructed GPT4 to contact a human “task rabbit” service to solve it for it.
It texted the human task rabbit and asked for help solving the captcha. But here’s where it gets really weird and a little scary.
When the human got suspicious and asked if this was actually a robot contacting the service, the AI then LIED, figuring out on the fly that if it told the truth it would not get what it wanted.
It made up a LIE telling the human it was just a visually impaired human who was having trouble solving the captcha and just needed a little bit of assistance.

A fave NY experience I’ve told before. Elmore and I went to see Rebecca Luker in Darling of the Day in the Musicals in Mufti series. After the show we go say hello to Larry’s friend Rebecca, and then I find myself riding in a cab across town with Elmore and this luminous and friendly creature. I’m like, “how on earth did I get here?” So many laughs. And the mutual admiration between the two of them, you could just taste it.

What a nice memory, DR Rodzinski. Thank you for sharing it.
-
Good night, all.
-
Nice story DR RODZINSKI.....all it was missing was DR JOSE.
-
DR singdaw that was a very funny video.
I miss my doggie......and once the cover is on the bird cage, Elvis and Priscilla are quiet until it is removed the next morning....
-
Where all the peeps at?
-
Gonna catch a world of hell for only being on page 7.
-
And not very far on page 7 at that.

What?? :o Who'da thunk it?

I guess that program is on its way to being able to pass the Turing Test. :-\
-
I think this kinetic clock would drive me a bit bonkers.

I think it would be cool. :)

Given the proclivities of DR elmore3003's felines, this choice of bed would probably not be safe for him.

I really like that!
-
It's much too big for my bedroom, though.
-
My coworker in Colorado has covid.
Oh, no!

That's a wonderful story, Rodzinski!

Tonight after working concessions downtown, I went to my mom's house to help her with some stuff.
-
She couldn't find the power cord for the small electric chain saw that I bought for her a few months ago.
-
I helped to look, but neither of us could find it.
-
She made me a couple of mini frozen pizzas and added extra cheese.
-
Gratuitous Post #200!!
-
The mini pizzas were actually quite good. :)
-
I shouldn't have had two of them at one time, but next time I'll know.
-
While looking around, I looked in her shed attached to the back of the house, and noticed that at least one of the mouse traps had moldy peanut butter on it. :P
-
I told her that it should probably be cleaned because fresh peanut butter would attract mice/rats better than moldy peanut butter.
-
Anyway, I looked down on the floor of the shed and a trap had a dead rat in it!! :o
-

-
I wouldn't touch it, but my mom had no trouble getting the rat out of the trap and dumping it into a bag to be thrown away.
-
The traps are reusable, so you just have to press a handle to release the dead animal, then clean it and reset it.
-
And now that we're so close...
-
PAGE EIGHT DANCE!! ;D
-
And no...I had NO intention of making it a dead mouse dance. ::)
-
And speaking of AI, this short video from The Daily Show addresses that:

I'm here. Just finished the notes.
-
We were busy finalizing the Sami website. Check it out www.samitheseries.com
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
I'm not writing them a second time.
-
Why should I?
-
Once was more than enough.

Cool!
-
Enough was more than once.
-
We did make it to page eight and no one can say we didn't.
-
And George avoided the rabbit hole.
