Title: PLASTER OF PARIS
Post by: bk on June 27, 2010, 12:15:31 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were plastered, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in Paris getting plastered.

Greetings from the Ft Lauderdale airport.  We got in about 6:30am and our connecting flight to Cancun is at 10:05am.  JetBlue really is the only way to fly these days.  We paid for extra legroom and it was worth it.  I have nothing else to report.

Good Morning
I am not at Ft. Lauderdale Airport.

I'm still in Montreal.

Beautiful weather.

Last night I went to The Fireworks Festival & The Jazz Festival.

One of the great things about Montreal are all the events.
Comedy: Just For Laughs,  Drama: The Montreal Fringe  Film: Montreal International Film Festival
and others

I went ahead and put in a bid yesterday for the Cambus-Kenneth Property....but then dammit I didn't win the Powerball, so I'm not sure if I should withdraw the bid or wait to see what happens in the Wednesday drawing.

Today we get to [finally] build our set for BLITHE SPIRIT, which means tomorrow all of the actors will be completely bewildered by the walls and doors that for the last two weeks I have told them will be there.

It will not be the major trauma that ensued on Friday when we put actual liquid in the glasses and cups - so that Edith the maid could no longer set the coffee pot and tea pitcher down on their sides on her tray - but there will be blood nonetheless.

Good morning, all! It was not a good night for me; no amount of Tylenol and Tylenol PM would kill the pain and render me unconscious. I finally fell asleep after 4 am and awoke in no pain, only a lot of discomfort around 9:30. Tomorrow, first thing, I will call my doctor and see if I can get in to see her ASAP. Part of my problem is that my blood sugar is suddenly out of control and the meds I am on arn't keeping it down. It's even more frustrating because I had next to nothing to eat yesterday. I wish I were aging gracefully and not so disgracefully.

Mikey, I am so sorry to hear about Bosco and his decline. There's nothing I can say that will bring you any comfort, but I agree with the other DRs who've suggested things to make him more comfortable.

This is a bleak post, so I'm going to take my bed apart and wash the linens.

JRand,  THE BLITHE SPIRIT arrived and I immediately watched it.  I actually think it holds up remarkably well and the pace just zips along.  mildred Natwick was an amusing Arcati, Claudette's Ruth was not quite the stick-in-the-mud I've usually found her to be, Lauren was fine, and Noel was...ah...Noel.

Thanks ever so much!

Is there a particular website(s) where one can get some of these all region DVDs?

If so, would you please share it?

It would be nice to get some of these titles that are unavailable here in the USA.

Thanks.

I was reading this very interesting memoir by someone with the initials BK ...
and as I was reading away, it just suddenly stopped and I was like "Where's the rest of the story?" I want to know what happens to this BK guy.

Will there be a Part Deux, so I can read away some more and find out what happens to this fellow?

Anyway, we gave the kids some prompts and let them pick and develop some characters -- then Cason and I got a script together based on their input, Cason wrote the music/songs, and they had a little 15 minute musical called Marie Laveau's Famous Gumbo. My favorite part was the Gumbo Spoon Rag (we had discovered the one little boy could tap dance so he did a dance off with the group we taught to play the spoons).

Thank you for the thoughts, vibes, and hugs for Dog Bosco.

We both had a lovely time at my niece's house yesterday and last night (we spent the night). Great nephew Cole was delightful and very easy to sit with, for a 2 year old. We had only one disagreement and that was when I told him it was time to put on his pajamas. He said "no." But then came over so that he could change into them. LOL!

He spent time brushing Bosco with his mom's hair brush (shhh, don't tell) and playing with his Gumby figure and toy airplanes. I spent my time just watching him play while I was also reading my book...except when I would get down on the floor and play blocks or puzzles with him.

...And thank you for the suggestions for Bosco. Unfortunately, his condition is such that it is just a matter of time until, well, it is time. He has Cushing's Disease (which is basically a tumor) and the only other option is surgery, which I do not plan on doing. Bosco is probably around 11 or 12 years old, so there is no sense in doing anything drastic. I love him with every fiber of my being and he has been the absolute best dog, ever. I could not have ever imagined getting such a well tempered, friendly, easy going, well behaved dog.

He does not seem to be in any pain, and I do not know that he has arthritis, but maybe we will take a trip to the vet this week just to rule it out. He does take a pill that helps him not leak.

His appetite seems OK, although some days he only eats one meal but he does drink a HUGE amount of water and he sleeps a lot and doesn't move around a lot. He is just old and tired and I am sure the tumor is taking it's toll on his body.

I just finished blubbering my way through the last episode of THE TUDORS, which was a very moving episode. I liked the fact that Henry's death never happened on camera, although it was apparent that it was imminent. All in all, I thought it was an elegiac tie-up to a good series.

I still feel like garbage; the discomfort is mighty grand. I think I will step out for a gallon of water and think about dinner, which will most likely be soup of some sort, maybe Artie's mushroom barley.

I know, I know, who is this Miss Karen person and why is she interloping on this here site...well, a long time ago in a place called HHW, she was known to do some gratuitous posting, but of the E and T kind, and, well,  the E and T behavior just started to grow ... and grow ... til there were no more postings of any kind ... but she's trying to change her E and T ways.

Welcome to our newcomer, Miss Karen!

Good morning!  Just wanted to say good-bye.  I'm leaving for Ireland, England and Scotland shortly.  One thing I know for sure--it will be a lot cooler than the DC area!

If I have access to a computer I'll check-in and report!

Have a wonderful trip, Kevin!

Safe travel vibes.

This is a great, great film!

Do any of you New Yorkers know a fellow named Neil Cooper?

He's probably close to 70 now.

He was also at the UW Drama Department.

Last I spoke to him, which was in the early 1970s, he was in NY, working for a costume company.

The humidity made it's way to New York. It's been very hot and humid here but it's supposed to get better by Tuesday.

Pride happened. I watched some of the March and then went to the "PrideFest" I saw some friends but it was too hot to stay outside. I've been inside just watching some television and playing games on the computer.

There is a little house, directly accross the street from me.  It is probably about 500 square feet of house, but has a huge yard.  The owner I believe rents it out every year to a different young man. Each one of these gentlemen have used the weekend of The Taste as a chance to sit around with all their friends, drink lots of beer, and check out every young woman who walks by.

This year the young man renting the house, or perhaps the owner, has used the house and yard more producively.  At $10.00 to park, and a turnover of cars every few hours, I think they made some serious money thus weekend.

Oh, my Lord.  The "person" who runs the Home Theatre Forum, you know, the place that has reviewers who don't really know what they're talking about, well, it's not bad enough that a person who runs a place like this admitted early on that he had never seen a classic film before the advent of DVD, but his admission last week that he'd never seen A Star is Born with Judy Garland was, I suppose, understandable.  Well, he's watched the film.  He liked it but thought it too long.  But here is what this "person" this man who runs the Home Theatre Forum had to say about the restoration:

"Thank Goodness the restoration of this film was
done through Warner Bros.  It was very interesting
to see the attempt to reconstruct destroyed scenes
using photography stills.  It worked out very, very well.
Had most any other studio attempted to restore this film
it would most likely have been a half-hearted effort."

Now, just in case you're not getting it, what he's saying here is that Warner Bros did this restoration - the implication clearly is that he thinks they JUST did this restoration and this reconstructing of destroyed scenes.  Well, note to "person":  This restoration of A Star is Born was done by Ronald Haver many, many years ago.  It was not done for THIS Blu-Ray release.  This is so typical of that jernt - a bunch of people writing about transfers when they know nothing about what film actually looks like - no, they read what some experts say, then use that as a barometer for every film ever made.  Sorry, doesn't work like that.  This endless tripe about DNR and grain removal - when I saw Grease the other night, I specifically asked Randal Kleiser, you know, the man who MADE THE FILM, what we were seeing.  And what we were seeing was a beautiful new digital version of the film - and he was so happy that he got to remove a lot of the really UGLY grain that always plagued the film due to opticals and the film stock of the time.  Point being, grain is not something that was always desired - not overt, ugly grain.  It was a byproduct of opticals, and begin generations away from the camera negative.  Yes, film has a natural grain, but these "reviewers" don't have a clew as to what it looks like.  They use phrases like "a nice, healthy layer of natural film grain" because they read it somewhere - read that phrase, usually spoken by people like Robert Harris - only they're not Robert Harris and no amount of reading Mr. Harris' comments (some of which I definitely agree with and some of which I definitely don't) is going to make them understand exactly what he's talking about.

End of rant.  And just to be very clear - note to "person": The restoration of A Star is Born would never have happened without Mr. Haver.  It was his idea, he spearheaded it, found the material, and while it was indeed done through the auspices of Warner Bros., Warner Bros. would not have done it sans Mr. Haver.  Other note to "person":  It's not really hard to find this information - Google is your friend, and I assume it's mentioned in many of the extras included on the disc - a little research and knowledge is always helpful in stopping someone from looking like an unknowledgeable fool.
