Good morning, all! I shall be E&T most of the day. DR FJL and I are taking the bus to Hartford for a performance of L'Homme de musique and I am very much looking forward to the trek. Footage at 11.

DR MBarnum, last night I caught a bit of "48 HOURS" and they were reporting on the 1978 death of actress(???) Christa Helm, who was a Hollywood pop tart moving in a very fast lane, keeping sex diaries, tapes, and lots of admirers of both sexes. She was stabbed to death in front of her agent's home. The case has been cold until this past year when her daughter convinced the LAPD to reexamine the evidence. The DNA under her nails says the attacker was a woman, so one of the questions is, was the attacker one of her girlfriends or the girlfriend of one of her boyfriends.
Marc Acito will be at the 82nd Street Barnes & Noble, my alma mater, on May 12. I'm hoping I can get over to have him sign my books, but I've got a band rehearsal that evening for the Ellington charts. Oy!

Sunday morning greetings! It's sunny and cool here in SW Ohio, a perfect day for church in Cincinnati and our planned visit with Rob and Mary Linda. The four of us are going for lunch and looking and shopping(?) at Ohio's first and only IKEA store, which opened about a month ago about halfway between our house and Cincinnati.

I was expecting DR Laura to ask about the cake! :)
Actually this restaurant is snooty and does not let you bring cake in (unless you pay some huge fee to do so). But they do give a big brownie with ice cream as a freebie. And it looks very good! And my aunt treated the rest of the table to the desserts of their choice.
The funny thing is my aunt said that when she came a group of 16 had brought their own cake. And the lady at the front asked if they had been told their was a per/person cutting fee (which would probably have been $35++ extra).
Anyhow my aunt almost died when the group told the lady that it was okay they didn't need it cut and were just going to put it on the table and have everyone help themselves. :)
The front said they would have to check about this. But i would have loved love to hear what happened and how that was resolved. Because somehow i feel like annoying 16 people would not be good business. Nor do i think they would be happy to hear about an extra $35 charge (my aunt thought it was $2/person). Somehow i thought it was more. But maybe that is right.

I answer to your question of last night about the Bette Davis box.
Actually, two Bette Davis box sets came out this month: one from Warners and one from Fox.
The Warner box contains THE OLD MAID, ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO, IN THIS OUR LIFE, THE GREAT LIE, and DECEPTION (which answers your question).
The box I opened last night was the Fox box which offers new remasters and a second disc of bonus features for both ALL ABOUT EVE and HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE along with PHONE CALL FROM A STRANGER, THE VIRGIN QUEEN, and THE NANNY.

Andrea Marcovicci was interviewed on a local TV morning show this morning. "Coco" appears to be a huge hit in San Francisco. Sold out, in fact. She's quite the personality! :)

When my parents were on their way home from AZ they stopped in Greensburg, KS, a town that was wiped out by a tornado a year ago and is now rebuilding as the most eco-friendly town in America. (They stopped because they find towns were disasters, murders etc happened to be fascinating - I have a unique family) Anyway, while my dad was there the camera from The Discovery Channel filmed him chatting with the mayor at a diner. The same town is going to be featured all this week on The Early Show.
The Discovery Channel 13 part series on the town doesn't start until June 15th. They've been filming there for a year, so the chances of dad making the final cut are pretty remote, but you never know. My parents in a documentary about a disaster... LOL, that would just be too appropriate...I mean because they are fascinated by disasters..
I still remember when I was about 7 years old and we were in a tornado at the lake. Dad stood outside watching it across the lake. I ran outside from the basement with my Mrs. Beasley in hand to save him and saw it. It's something you never forget.

Today's inter-cultural rant department: The minister at the church where I work is a very learned, very nice man, but he likes to go back to Hebrew words and roots a lot in his sermons. Unfortunately his pronunciation is simply wrong most of the time. I have tried to gently nudge him toward the correct pronunciation, but somehow he thinks some 19th century concordance is going to be more correct than those who have been pronouncing these words their whole lives.

I began my afternoon with another PSYCH episode. This was the one where Shawn and Gus helped Lasseter regain some confidence in his ability by helping to solve a case of a murdered astronomer. Richard Kind was the prinicipal guest star.

I spent the rest of the afternoon by watching all eight episodes of THE BIG GAY SKETCH SHOW, Season 2.
They added two male cast members for this season: the drop dead gorgeous Paolo Andino and the hilarious Colman Domingo. Each of them brought brand new hilarious characters that amounted to highlights of the entire season, and I'm sure we'll see more of them in the seasons to come.

All four of the women from season 1 were back, all as wonderful as ever and also two of the men from the first season continued as well.
Nice to see recurring characters Stritchy (hilarious parody of Elaine Stritch), Fitzwilliam (little British boy who wants a vigina in the worst way), Svetlana (gymnast and former KGB hitwoman).

It's so clever the way they've arranged it so you kind of have to see the whole place. We were going to take one of the "shortcuts" to bail early, but realized that it would be too far to go back to it. Rob and Mary Linda each bought a small item, but Richard and I bought nothing (well, I bought lunch...).

I forgot to mention that I watched the Met's production of Hansel & Gretl on PBS a few weeks ago. It was okay, the guy who played the Witch wasn't very good - and the whole production made a complete FOOD mess of the stage....it was rather embarrassing to behold such a spectacle....at least on television.

Back from another two runs. Morning was pretty excellent, afternoon was pretty sloppy and not excellent, a shame since the artistic director of the theater was there - but that's what happens when you do two runs back to back with only an hour break between.

We finished at four-fifteen and I decided to go home, what with how I've been feeling (I'm a little better today). So, they'll do the band rehearsal and then I'll hear the result tomorrow night.

Here is a frightening photo from my youth. Okay, I was 24, it was the summer of 1974. The Jewish guy on the right was my roommate in Seattle. The Carrot Top look-alike (and the man responsible for this photo surfacing) is my old friend Bill, who is currently living outside of Atlanta in Dallas, Georgia.

JR, not sure if you were joking or not, but, yes, an enhanced 16:9 DVD (which works out to an aspect ratio of 1.78:1) will fill up the entire screen on your HDTV. The slightly wider 1.83:1 and 1.85:1 ratios will have small bands of black, but not much. However, 'Scope features (2.35:1) still will have quite a bit of black at the top and bottom.

I've an early morn tomorrow. Lots of early morns this week, in fact, as opposed to last week's late nights.

But first ---
Tonight we had pork ribs, very thick and meaty, which I basted with barbeque sauce and cooked slowly in the oven for a couple of hours.
As sides, some refried beans and zucchini fritters.
The fritters themselves are fairly easy, but I keep playing around with the recipe. Essentially, they contain roughly grated zucchini, finely chopped onion, grated cheese, a little salt, flour, and a couple of eggs. The whole is mixed together, let to rest for a few minutes, and then formed into quenelles and fried in oil in a pan until nicely golden.
The first few that I fried didn't turn out right, so I added a bit more flour to the mix, tried again, and they were exactly right.
One of these days I'll try to get more on the proportions of the mix, but it's still a recipe in development.
The nice thing is that, after der B and I have had our fill, the lads (and lassie) can have the leftovers, hush puppy style, and I know I've given them something that's fairly good for them.

The Vixter and the Vixdad have had various work and school projects which required that they have use of our one and only computer evenings and weekends which kept me away
so the highlights and lowlights of the past few weeks it the life of Vixmom
Taxes were done and paid (perhaps we should speak to FJL to see how we could be in the refund rather than the paying end of things)
We went to our annual ICON and spent much time being entertained by Mr. Harlan Ellison
Mr Dad has had an operation from which he seems to be recovering nicely

I am now 35 lbs lighter than I was on New Year's Day

Finished watching a motion picture on DVD and shall now type up notes from today's run-through.

Back from the wilds of Hartford and the lovely Bushnell Center. THE MUSIC MAN was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, a beautiful production of a nearly flawless musical. Much as I love Rebecca Luker, this production, which was staged in 8 days, left Strohman's revival in the dust. The entire show was performed, including the entire score and all crossovers and all dialogue. The dances were all there, perhaps more polished with more rehearsal time, but all smartly staged and wittily performed. I love the "Marian the Librarian" Dance, which is like a whiff of libido wafting through Victorian halls. Harold Hill is the great god Pan stirring up trouble among the upright uptight citizens and bringing on the vapors.
Seeing the show agan, I'm reminded how apropos the title is: "sing 'ice cream.'" "Iiiiiiice creeeeeeeam." The show's not just about a con man using musical instruments but about the music we often pass up daily in our lives and how that music can heal, repair, laugh and dance through our day. The cast was quite wonderful, Jason Graae, the fierce Mary Stout, a wonderful Mayor Shinn and Charlie Cowell played by David Coffee and Bob Freschi, an adorable Winthrop and Amaryllis, every youthful and beautful Shirley Jones, brogue and all, and Patrick Cassidy as a smooth Harold Hill who reminded me a bit of his father Jack.
Lisa Vroman was wonderful as Marian but I think I prefer my beloved Ms Luker, who can do no wrong. The school board barbershop quartet was wonderful and, after their a cappella refrain, when they and the orchestra landed on the same key for Marian's part of "Lida Rose" I wanted to dance in the aisle and weep at how wonderful it was. It was great to hear the whole score played by a wonderful orchestra.
As a bonus, I got to spend a day with the wonderful FJL, see several friends I hadn't seen in some time: I hadn't seen Ric Ryder since he played Tom the Piper's Son in BABES IN TOYLAND at the Houston Grand Opera in 1991 or Buddy Crutchfield since he recorded "Italy In Technicolor" for LOST IN BOSTON 2. Mary Stout had dinner with DR FJL and me, and I got to see Jason briefly, as well as Patrick and Miss Jones, who signed my CDs of BRIGADOON and her duets with Jack Cassidy.
Nursie Jane, I already communicated about meeting Marc Acito before the reading. He thought he'd be tied up with family and friends.

I have been going to the gym every morning fro 30 - 60 minutes (as my schedule will allow) before work and on Saturday I took the offer of a free 2 hour meeting with a personal trainer.
Byron an extensivly tatooed, 6'3" black man in his mid thirties, with shoulders as wide as I am tall had me throwing medicine balls and lifting weights and do "squats' and "lunges" and using weight machines. nealry 48 hours later and my thighs and upper arms still feel as if someone had taken a baseball bat to them
I must have become really and truly addicted to this idea of a "healthy lifestyle" (or perhaps I have become a masochist in my dotage) since I plan to get to the gym again tomorrow morning to inflict some more pain on myself. I have also decided to try the Saturday morning "body sculpting " classes to see if they can sculpt me into something that will a less resemble a lump of clay

IF I am watching a 16:9 enhanced DVD and using the 16:9 setting on my up convert DVD - is that why the picture fills up the screen on my HDTV and I don't have to look at the black widescreen bars?
It will fill up the screen and not have letterbox bars if the movie was shot in any aspect ratio from 1.66:1-1.85:1. If it's shot in a scope process, you'll still see letterbox bars because scope aspect ratios are still wider than the aspect ratio of modern widescreen TVs.

After cleaning my bathroom tonight and putting away the folded laundry, I settled in for an evening of viewing.
I began by watching the second disc in BIG GAY SKETCH SHOW set. Interviews, deleted sketches, some backstage stuff, and a bunch of previews of other Logo series available on DVD. Not as much content as I was expecting.

Next, I put in the DVD of THE VIRGIN QUEEN. I didn't start with the movie, however. I began with the documentary THE MAKING OF THE VIRGIN QUEEN. Much longer than the usual featurettes on Fox DVDs, and interesting.

I then watched about 30 minutes of THE VIRGIN QUEEN. The transfer looks very nice. Not stunning like SOUTH PACIFIC or THE KING AND I, but very nice indeed.
The directionalized dialog is fairly irritating, however. Doesn't make for a natural front soundstage when someone is standing only a few inches to the right or left of another person, but their voices are coming from the left or right front speaker which seems miles away from the center channel speaker.

I adore THE MUSIC MAN's score. I saw the Stroman revival with Eric McCormack and Rebecca Luker, and I found it simply wonderful. It was so entertaining and directed so fluidly that I truly didn't notice the cuts, etc.
But that score! There's really nothing like it anywhere else in musical theater.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had some monumental events occur tonight.
Can't say I was surprised at all about who set the fire. We saw them eavesdropping when Tom and Lynette were arguing. Glad Edie finally got Gaby to think with a little sense. Loved the speech Susan had with Bree near the end of the episode. Very touching. Gary Cole will make an interesting addition to the cast, at least for the time being. (No one can replace Nathan Fillion, of course. He's filming a pilot for a new series, so I doubt he'll ever be back as a regular again).

In other news...
I think I'm going to hang out here in Fairfax until Tuesday evening, maybe even Wednesday morning. There are just a bunch of people I want to catch up with up here. Even if I head down to Richmond on Wednesday, that will give me a good day and night to catch up with everyone down there. -I booked my flight back out of Richmond, so... I also want to spend a little more time with my nieces and nephew tomorrow night. :)

Yes I do, and I get slivers of black on the sides for 1.66:1. But why confuse him with a lot of techno stuff?
Lots of people have TVs with 3%-5% overscan and don't see bars with any of the flat widescreen ratios. Luckily, I have a TV that can do 1 to 1 pixel mapping with 0% overscan.

Got a call from our set designer - she's going to be adjusting the big unit and making it a little smaller, taking a little off each side. This very large unit sits all the way upstage and is white, and includes several doors that do different sorts of things, and some panels that swivel. The set for whatever scene is projected onto it - she's been using two projectors with a Cinerama-like "join" line in the middle. It's been problematic, so she's going to one projector and that won't fill the entirety of the unit, so she's taking some off the sides.

I've eaten two Tums and hopefully they'll help - I'm really feeling queasy right now. Of course, the best thing to do when eating Tums is to watch some smut, but then again, smut is Tums spelled backwards.
