Well, you've read the notes, the notes were easy notes, and now it is time for you to post until the easy cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: UMAMI!
-
Congrats to new homeowner TCB!
-
First post after BK.
-
Congrats to new homeowner TCB!
Thank you, BK.
-
Darn, I am still awake ;D
-
Darn, I am still awake ;D
Me, too.
-
Tom, I'm not at all surprised you're still up. It's so exciting!
-
I agree with Jan.
-
Ditto!
-
Probably true, but considering how little sleep I have gotten in the past two nights...
-
But, I am going to try. Good night, all.
-
'night. Sleep well.
-
Good night, Tom.
-
I'm still awake.
-
As much as I love the von Karajan Verklarte Nacht in beautiful stereo, I first heard the piece the other day in a historic recording by Vladimir Golschmann and I must say it's almost like listening to a differennt piece of music. Mono archival sound, of course, but a stunning performance done, I think, in 1942. Maybe I'll do a historic recordings CD for Kritzerland with a few things like that that I love.
-
Yes, maybe I just will.
-
Must be in bed soon.
-
Am I first in the morning?
-
In a sample of days I missed, it looks like HHW actually winds up with more postings in days when I am E&T completely!!!!
-
Congrats TCB on your new condo!
-
It's always a good time to recall
Donny Osmond's "condominium" blooper
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-bt-xK_7OI
It's probably a planted joke, because if you look online, he seems to make lots of risqué bloopers! But sometimes scripted can be finny, too! :)

-
What exciting news, Tommy, I am so happy for you!!!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Congratulations, TCB!
-
A friend of mine, with whom I worked in Sarasota, picked up his second Pulitzer yesterday. He lives in Louisiana. His first was for post Katrina coverage. Yesterday he won for his work on a tram that helped overturn Louisiana’s non unanimous jury law.
-
I wanna go back to bed.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Big congrats to TCB on his new condo!!!
When is the housewarming partay?
-
Yes, the Schoenberg Chamber Symphony (s).
I also love the Five Pieces for Orchestra, and this Mercury is a stunner for that piece.
-
I'd thought of suggesting Pierrot Lunaire for its atonal (but not serial) music and for the drama itself, though you'd have to follow along with a translation to get an appreciation for it. (It's a lovely little morbid tale.) :)
I like it, myself, but I suspect it's a little too far out there -- both atonally, and for the sprechstimme style of singing/narration throughout. (I think one climactic note is sung.) It probably crosses the line BK wouldn't care to cross.
-
Good morning!
-
Congrats to TCB! I'm very happy for you!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I am alive. I slept in until 8:45, and Annabelle wants to patrol, so I will return.
-
First, though, big congratulations to our new homeowner, DR TCB! I hope you have a lovely guest room (asking for a friend).
-
Good morning.
-
Congratulations, TCB! Is there a small patio in the back for Nicky?
-
And to Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, and those 12-tone jokesters. I too love "Verklärte Nacht" but I find "Pierrot Lunaire" interesting, although the vocalist's sprechtstimme is almost hilarious in its hoots and vocal slides. I also find Schonberg's Big Opera, Moses und Aron, a hard listen.
However, I love Alban Berg's two 12-tone operas, Wozzeck and Lulu, and recommend them highly. I cannot put on the CDs and follow a score because I get caught up completely in "how do they know if they played a wrong note?" and the music gets on my nerves. Watching them is a whole different experience, and it's the only way to experience them, IMO.
-
BK, here's a curiosity you might find fun. Schonberg, Berg, and Webern arranged Viennese waltzes for chamber groups and orchestration studies for their pupils. I discovered this in college, with an album of these arrangements from the Boston Symphony, as I recall. I have this CD.
-
Off to patrol! A happy Annabelle means a happy Thatch and elmore!
-
Congrats to DR TCB on his purchase!
Congrats to DR FJL on the show production....that should be a fun summer show for everyone!
-
TOD:
I have one Lester Lanin LP.....two tracks on each side.....long medleys of songs for dancing....

I liked the Billy Vaughn Lp's on DOT - that label had nice stereo.

I didn't know about these! Definitely interested.
I also forgot to add an enthusiastic endorsement last night for his orchestral setting of the Brahms Piano Quartet. Great piece!
Also in that mode, his "Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra After Handel" is less well known but likewise recommended.
-
On a slightly amusing personal note, here's an antiquated photocopy of a piano reduction of the orchestral score made by a friend of mine in the early 1970s. Apparently one didn't exist then (maybe still doesn't?). The conductor wanted to be able to rehearse at the piano with a string quartet without fumbling with the full score. It was a quick and dirty project, and my job was to make sure that what he put down was reasonably playable. Don't know if the original cut-and-paste still exists. I should ask, and at least make a clear copy.
-
I have these four DVDs of the Berg operas. Lulu is based on Wedekind's play Pandora's Box, which was made into the great silent film with Louise Brooks as Lulu. It's the only opera I know ti end with Jack the Ripper.
-
I have that Levine one, but I also want that other Met Lulu if it's the production I saw in the movie theater. Holy cow, that was stunning, and probably the single best use of projections I've ever seen. I loved everything about that.
-
Our patrol was short-lived. We got to the lobby, and Annabelle was reveling in the bright sunshine outside, when the crazy man on the fifth floor who caused the police to break down his door last year came in from outside. Annabelle always runs from strangers and loonies - I'm the only loony she tolerates - so she ran to the stairs, but the neighbor always walks up to the fifth floor, so when he reached the steps where she was hiding, she ran back down. I carried her home. Still, she was happy: her tail was all fluffed out and she chirped and trilled all the way home.
-

I checked amazon and there are three Met performances on DVD! I was wrong, though; the photo I posted is not one I own. I have the John Dexter production from the 1980s, which was supposed to be Teresa Stratas. She cancelled the broadcast and Julia Migenes played the role.

Congratulations to him.
-
Thatch wants to go out lately. He goes to the apartment door, sits there, and chatters at me. I would love to let him go with us, but I fear he's not going to stick close to me as Annabelle does.
-
I wanna go back to bed.
So do I. At least I slept late, 7:30, managing about 5 1/2 hours of sleep.
-
Damn it to hell. If asked, I would also have said I had Stratas on some format or other. She's on the Mahagonny and Ghosts of Versailles, but not on either of the Berg operas unless there's one from another opera company. But yes, that is the John Dexter and I have it.
Edit: (Fixed that.) (Never mind.) :) This is getting confusing.

TOD:
What is "easy listening"? I immediately came up with my own examples, but since no one else has answered yet, I felt like I needed to look it up to see if I was on the right track. Apparently, I wasn't. Wikipedia says that easy listening is Frank Sinatra, The Carpenters and Dionne Warwick.
The artists that I liked, and considered to be easy listening were:
Simon & Garfunkel
Bread
Seals and Crofts
Enya

In Autumn 1972, I returned to my parents' home thinking I would be in Middletown for a brief time before I headed to London. Two things stopped that European itinerary: things were economically slow and I could not find a job. My anticipated stay of maybe six months turned into seven years.
During my job search I was constantly rejected for being over-educated since I had a Masters Degree, and no one took my application seriously. I applied to every company in my hometown and got nothing. I went to my bank and applied to be a teller. The lady in charge of employment was a Rosemary Something, an older woman who was very quite chilly and oozing responsibility. As soon as she saw my application, she told me there was nothing for me at the bank and I should go see Arthur Wolman, director of the Middletown Public Library. So I did.
-
Arthur was a very kind, older man, who told me he had no job openings and that he felt sorry for my being passed off to other possible employers. So, a week later I returned to the First National Bank employment office. As soon as I walked in, Rosemary rose from her desk and said angrily, "What are you doing here? I sent you to the library."
It took me a second to regain my composure before I said. "There were no job openings at the library. I came back to tell you I was still available in hopes that one of your tellers had dropped dead in the past week." And I turned around and left. That Rosemary bitch died long ago and I'm happy to convey the news.
-
I brought all this up because of a blind 3-year-old dog named Austin, who is on a Dept. of Health hold at the NYC ACC for biting a person who approached him unaware. The only thing missing from Austin's essentials is his weight, which I want to know. So, I sent the ACC an email asking about it. The response was Thank you for your interest in Austin. He is currently not available for adoption. We encourage you to come into one of our care centers to meet our available animals.
I immediately thought of Rosemary when I sent this response: I am certainly aware of Austin's current situation, but once he is off the DOH hold, if he's not a silent ACC kill, he will need an adopter and I am interested.
-
My neighbor just called me, whining about missing Val, who was a much better super than the current one, and there being no heat in the building. She's a good neighbor but she has this knack of calling or stopping in without asking if I'm busy and chattering on and on. I suggested she call the landlord and complain, putting more blankets on the bed, layering more clothes, but no; it's whine, whine, whine.
-
All this culture on HHW today.....yup....when it comes to culture we're the first hogs to the trough.

TOD
Percy Faith’s albums of Kismet, Subways Are for Sleeping and Do I Hear a Waltz?

Well, that's why Wikipedia is a joke - any moron can write entries. Easy listening is all the people I mentioned in the notes.
-
I'm up, I'm up - maybe seven hours of sleep.
-
I shall now be on my way to a lunch meeting.

That's so cool! Congrats to your friend, John!

I think my family’s main brush with easy listening records would have been when my mom and dad joined the Columbia Record Club around 1961, concurrent with buying their first stereo console. It was a large walnut floor standing one from Sears. I would eventually realize that the Sears ones left a lot to be desired in the quality department, but it got me through my formidable junior high and high school music listening years in good stead and I will never forget it.
However, I wasn’t so attracted then to the easy listening music they acquired. My thing was the cast albums and classical, and it would be years before I learned to appreciate some of the Percy Faith and other stuff. But by then I was coming to it from the opposite direction — looking back on it, not riding the initial wave. I also discovered the ping-pong stereo fun of “Space Age Bachelor Pad Music” (cf. BK’s reference to Dick Schory, Esquivel, etc.) through my then-bachelor uncle who really was into it during its time. I never had any of these albums myself back in the day, but in my record collecting years I acquired good representative examples of a number of them.

That's interesting. Teresa Stratas didn't do the recording for Rags, but Julia Migenes also recorded that show for her.
-
Well there was an Anna and the King tv series.....but it was not a musical....it too was unnecessary.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
A GREAT BIG CONGRATS to TCB on his new home purchase!
I'm really glad you got it! Vibes the inspection and closing go smoothly, ditto the move, and you're happy as a clam! Snug as a bug in rug! <supply appropriate cliche>
-
Congrats to John G's prize-winning friend!
-
Congrats to FJL and Skip on the upcoming Maryland production.
-
Lots and lots of excitement today here at HHW.
-
I am home today, trying to get rid of this sore throat and the last of this bug. Naturally, they've begun the renovation of the Noisy Neighbors' former apartment (next door), so it is anything but quiet. I'll survive. (I think.)
-
I'm looking forward to the Magic Castle.
-
No other news.
TTFN.

IF Oklahoma for TV (imagined for a new audience - heaven help us all - and with non-R&H music to boot) actually happens, which I doubt, it will die a very fast death. History teaches these morons nothing.

Back from a wonderful lunch with Julie Kirgo, then a brief meeting back in the Valley, then picking up some packages, and now I'm home.

Yawn.

Ushering for Joan Baez tonight.
-
Back in the day, we knew Gordon was going places in journalism. He was covering the Katherine Harris election and she would complain about him because he bothered to report on what she said and was doing. How dare he! Then the hanging chad crap happened and we saw her for what she really was.

Oh I just saw Joan Baez in a French documentary about Nuremberg and the parallels with the Vietnam War.....Marcel Ophuls....it was very interesting.

No other Billy Vaughn fans here?

I liked the synopsis "the story of farm girl Laurey Williams and her courtship by two rival suitors," except they left out the fact that one's a sociopathic antisocial brute.

Which one - Rodgers or Hammerstein?
My money is on Rodgers, whose daughter actually sued him for plagiarism. I'd love to see Yorkey and Kitt take on a Freaky Friday where Richard Rodgers and Mary Rodgers switched bodies!
Oh wait, that said two suitors, not two authors. :)
-
These days, everyone seems to be saying Curly's full name Curly McLain.
I can't read that full name without thinking of Shirley MacLaine.
-
This was in the blurb for the pilot of the :"Anna and the King" sitcom in the 1970s: "With Anna's assistance, the King hosts a dinner party to impress the visiting British."
Can't you read that as "With Ethel's assistance, Lucy hosts a dinner party to impress the owner of the Tropicana."

Each week, Curly and Jud will fight to the death. Jud will die a different way every single week.
-
Joan Baez was excellent. She sang several songs from Tom Waits, several Dylan numbers, John Lennon, Paul Simon. She also sang a wonderful song about Obama singing Amazing Grace at the funeral for the victims of Dylan Roof's massacre. She had some great stories about Martin Luther King Jr.
In all, a fine evening.

Gratuitous post No. 100!
-
Starting to watch an odd little movie called Music for Millions with Margaret O'Brien and Jose Iturbi.

There was also this "lord and master" joke at 0:12 in this "Debbie Reynolds Show" trailer

The theme song for the Debbie Reynolds sitcom "With a Little Love, Just a LIttle Love"

I was thinking a Freaky Friday Mary Rodgers mash-up - maybe Jud and Curly switching bodies, so Curly shoots, but it’s really Jud in Curly’s body shooting Curly in Jud’s body!
-
Thinking more of Mary's immediate offspring are still around than Richard Rodgers anyway.
-
Checked out a few Twilight Time transfers, watching about twenty minutes of each.
-
I'm fading fast.
-
Good night, all.
-
Even though she somehow was responsible for their TV show being cancelled, her co-star Tom Bosley spoke with great compassion for Debbie:

Listening to some great music. What else is new?
-
We have been on page four for HOURS.
-
Did you hear me?
-
Page four for HOURS.
-
Maybe I'm not speaking loudly enough?
-
We have been on page four for HOURS.
-
And it looks like it could be HOURS more.
-
Very unseemly.
-
I ate way too much food today. I didn't mean to, though.
-
The lunch was at a well-thought-of Eyetalian jernt in Westwood, but I didn't care for it much. VERY ordinary Caesar, undressed, which I hate - put the dressing on, toss it, then serve it. Seems basic to me. Then pasta bolognese with almost no flavor at all and very small portion.
-
So, later I got some chopped liver from Gelson's, some egg and onion matzohs, and a small cube steak. Came home and ate ALL of it, save for the matzoh, which smelled like it had been treated with pesticide. I had two bites and almost vomited on the ground.
-
I wonder how many HOURS we'll be on page five, for heaven's sake?
-
Now cut that out.
-
Oh, Don, Don Wilson.

Lovely 😊

Did you say something about wanting to see "Yours Mine and Hours?"

"Save for the Matzoh". - that's the title of a new reality show about being too poor to buy Matzoh, ao you have to -
"Save for the Matzoh".
-
I am hoping my allergies are bothering me and I am not comi g down with a cold.
-
I took half a Benadryl so ......
-
'night
-
Good night!
-
Watching Rider in the Rain the other night made me want to hear the score again. Lots of the soundtracks are in boxes still and we just shoved the ones that aren't onto shelves without ordering them - but I've been lucky in just finding what I want - and I found that one today so I'm listening to it now.
-
Good evening.
-
Closing date is 5/13/19
-
I rescheduled my Wellness appointment.
-
It took me a long time to fall asleep last night.
-
I turned off the lights, but I just felt really strange.
-
It took me a while before I realized that I never took my pain pills or muscle relaxers yesterday.
-
The pills finally kicked in enough, so that I could fall asleep, but I was afraid to look at the clock by then.
-
Page 5? Still?
-
What the heck has BK been doing all evening?
-
So, later I got some chopped liver from Gelson's, some egg and onion matzohs, and a small cube steak. Came home and ate ALL of it, save for the matzoh, which smelled like it had been treated with pesticide. I had two bites and almost vomited on the ground.
So really all you ate was some chopped liver and a small cube steak. A rather strange combination.
-
So, less than a month! how ya gonna handle the move?
-
I didn't eat them at the same time :)
-
Notes are written and you'll love the image that's in them.
-
I think there was something seriously wrong with the matzohs and I'm gonna bring the box back to Gelson's and let them smell it. And my stomach is not feeling well at the moment.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Hi, Kimmel.
-
Hi, jan!
-
Sorry your tummy isn't feeling well. Do you have any club soda or hot tea?
-
So, less than a month! how ya gonna handle the move?
I have no idea.
-
Do you have any companies that will do all the packing, moving, and unpacking for you? I know they exist but I don't know how expensive they are.
-
I'd offer to come help but my back wouldn't allow much help. About the only things I could do is cook food for ya and take care of Nicky.
-
I looked around at all this stuff today and just cried.
-
I am not looking for the forty minute ride with Nick to the new house.
-
He hates car rides.
-
I may ask his doctor for some kitty downers.
-
I know how you feel. I was thinking about moving closer to my brother's family until I looked at all the stuff here. I have move than 200 books here alone.
