Title: THE PLANETS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in alignment, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're in retrograde right now.

I've never had my fortune told and the only time anyone has read tarot cards for me was a friend in college who had to refer to her tarot card book.  Nothing she said about what would happen to me came true. ::)

I did have my fortune read once.  Right after I left, I got a traffic ticket for driving too fast through a school zone.  Somehow, the old gal whose palm I had crossed with silver (or greenbacks, as was the case) hadn't seen that imminent future for me in the cards.

I have a lot of posts from yesterday to catch up on.

But i wanted to ask a question.

BK, the other day you mentioned that you spoke to juliana's mother. And that she told you some stuff about what was going on with the show.

Could you give us some details. I'm very curious about what they are allowed to do and the actual goings on with the show.

If you are not allowed to say could you PM privately some details.

Thanks.

Good morning, all!  First of all, thank you for the vibes, good wishes, and sympathy.  Please keep them coming!  I've also received kind offers of plane fare, mileage, and financial aid since yesterday morning, and I cannot tell you DRs enough how dear to me you are.  Selfishly, I will be glad when this is finished because this period of anxiety, fear and mourning has been occupying too much of everyone's time for the past nine months, and I want peace for my father and my family.

The payment landed in my account this morning, but my bank deducted $10.00 for the wire transfer, which means this was not the usual direct deposit and that gives me pause since I don't know what it means in terms of the next one.  Clearly something is now screwed up and needs to be resolved,

At any rate, the new plane rservation is made for tomorrow at 1:30 pm, and I most likely will not return to New York until it's over.  Hospice came to my brother's house yesterday to set up everything and I suspect he's waiting for me to arrive before he crosses over.

Today, I have work planned, laundry, and packing.  Thank God I can be busy.

TOD:  I have had weird experiences with a fortune cookie, an astrological reading, and a ouija board.  I don't know if I'm psychic or psycho most of the time.

In May(?) 1985, my father called me around 7:30 AM telling me I had t fly home for my mother's quadruple bypass.  I booked a flight for that evening around 6 PM and spent the day doing errands before leaving.  My lunch was Chinese food, and my fortune cookie said "You will receive good news today."  Around 3 PM, Steve Sondheim's assistant Patricia Sinnott called me to tell me that my nomination of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE had just won the Pulitzer.

In 1978 or so, my stoner friend Greg and his psycho girlfriend invited me to Dayton, OH, to drop acid for a weekend.  His lady friend wanted her friend Rom to read my horoscope as well.  I went for the weekend, didn't drop acid although everyone else did, and had my astological chart read.  In 1978, I was planning a theatrical career as an actor/director/designer, and even though I'd had offers to move to NYC, I was happy directing a community theatre but unhappy about making a living.  Rom told me, among many fascinating things that still amaze me, that I would live on a coast near the ocean and I would make recordings.

I grew up in a haunted house, all my mother's siblings have had paranormal experiences, as have my brother Tom and I.  I have had strange ouijaboard events in my parents' house as well as in the old theatre at Fisher Hall on the Miami University campus, where everyone had a story about hauntings.

I had my palm read once at a state fair (an R&H reference), and all I can remember the lady telling me was that I was to have a long life. She didn't define long, so I don't know if surviving past your mid-50s counts as long or if I can still count on another 30 years or so. I hope it's the latter.

I did record LAW & ORDER last night. It has a gay storyline, so I'll be interested to see it. Otherwise, though, I'll be DVDing it this weekend. Certainly there's nothing on TV tonight of interest to me.

I also have those movies on the DVR that I'd love to get watched and erased. Should be able to make a dent in them today.

Venus cannot be IN Uranus - however it does conjunct Uranus this week, so perhaps that is what MR BK meant.

The Sun opposes Neptune today, too.

So get out of those relationship ruts.  Enjoy a dreamy Saturday, but be prepared for a reality check on Monday.

I use the Londa Tarot in my readings for others.  I have several regular clients.

I do a bit of palmistry, but am not proficient.  I also do past life readings, which are always interesting - though I have never met anyone famous!  ;D

Your tarot experience is interesting, DR JRand.

The week before I took my final exams for my M.A., I bought a deck of tarot cards, followed the directions, and laid out a reading for myself. It was quite fun, and the cards seemed to predict what happened with my degree, but those cards and book got put away in a drawer and I've never used them again.

I don't usually find myself with time on my hands, but one of these days, I must drag them out again and play with them.

It sounds like you do more than play, of course. Very interesting.

I guess I'd never seen a totally top-level-professional FOLLIES during my adult lifetime before seeing the Encores presentation last night.  I still feel better that we live in a day where you can be late-40's and can completely start over, and I felt that the characters of Phyllis and Buddy will be just fine in their lives even within the period the show is set, the early 1970's.  But somehow, I wasn't ready for the power of Sally's thorough emotional devastation, which was just harrowing in this presentation, and the last time I felt so overwhelmed by a character's disintegration in a play or musical was in the Dennehy-Redgrave revival of Long Day's Journey a few years back.  Powerhouse stuff, this FOLLIES.

OMIGOD YOU GUYS

Legally Blonde at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre turned out to be quite the show.  It's fun, it flows, the music is really good and the book is quite good also.  It flows nicely and most of all it doesn't try and take itself seriously.  All that said I beleive it could be the new Wicked for our  teeney-bopper friends out there (with the music MUCH more accessable).  The show is just a bundle of fun.  There are many references to the film and some new things as well.  The music was in the style of the show and didn't "stop" the show as both the book and the music worked hand in hand in telling the story.  The sets were great and not corny, although, very pink.  There were a few things that could be fixed, like a dance number in Act Two (towards the end of the show) that seemed really out of place.  I hope it's tightened a bit before Broadway.

IMHO, Legally Blonde is something the theatre community needs right now.  With all these "serious" shows opening this season, some good old fashioned musical comedy is in order.  This show would definately fit the bill.  It's quite family friends, and there were a LOT of teens in the audience last night that seemed to really enjoy it.  I wish it well!  :)

Oh, and the DP really liked it, and he's hard to please especially when they take a familiar movie and try to musicalize it.

DR RLP, if you like comedy, SEE THIS SHOW!

Of course heartfelt vibes to our dearest elmore.

"Tarot " - yeah, DR PennyO does, indeed, read. every day - it is my morning meditation for, lo, these 40+ years. I have had extremely accurate readings come up for complete strangers - one guy on a plane from NY to LA... he asked about one rather superficial issue, and what came up was his imminent visit to his lawyer to cut his daughter out of his will!! I warned him, for the dire consequences predicted. he was so glad to have "accidentally" run into me in so unlikely a place.

I have also seen a potentially life-threatening liver ailment in an acquaintance's husband - she warned him, they went to a doctor about it, and caught the problem in time to save his life - he was hospitalized for weeks.

Mostly, though, I use Tarot for life-counseling - helping people see potential conflicts in coming business meetings or other types of interactions, and read for "best-case scenario" strategies; I have used Tarot to counsel people looking to change professions, stuff like that.

Is any DR familiar with the musical "Gambler" by Eric Woolfson? He also wrote "Freudiana". DR Rodzinski is probably quite familiar with the Alan Parsons Project albums.  DR George - I guess the musicals would be in your collection.

This morning I feel like a weight has been lifted.  Actually it was when I picked up my Russian Blue, Nicholas, who weighs more than most barbells.

However the metaphorical weight that was lifted was actually the opening of DIARY OF ANNE FRANK.  It is one thing to jump into a musical or a comedy with only three weeks to go before opening; but it is an entirely different experience when the project is a production as powerful and moving as ANNE FRANK.  This production has totally consumed me for the last few weeks as I fought to find my character, learn my lines, deal with my uneasiness about the new adaptation of the diary, and to try and find my Jewishness (not always easy for a old Norwegian like myself).  Granted the play deals with universal truths; but, at the same time, these were real people (despite what some people are insist) and there is a certain obligation not only to Hermann VanDaan (van Pels), but to the six million other Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis.

Anyway, the response from the audience last night, and the individual comments I received have convinced me that our efforts have paid off.

TOD:
I had a ouija board as a kid, but nothing extraordinary came of it.

I visited a fortune teller many years ago with some friends. the "character" reading she gave me told me nothing beyond what any observant person could deduce from how I was dressed. She then added that someone had put a spell on me when I was a child and for $200 she'd look into it. I said, "uh, no."

I have spoken to a couple psychics since who told me things that NO ONE would have known, things even close friends often don't pick up on. There's no question in my mind that these women have some psychic abilities. They weren't telling my future as much as explaining certain things in the present.

My impression--and please, JRAND and PENNYO or others--chime in here--it isn't so much a matter of being psychic or not psychic, it's a matter of degree, much like musical talent.

Today's clutter story:
I had set aside some old, paint-encrusted hinges from one of my many renovation projects. Thinking "What am I saving these for?" I was about to toss them. Fortunately, my gem of a handyman/painter Matt was here today. I offered them to him for any old-house project (or sale on eBay), only to learn that they are my old window hinges from the 3rd floor and we may yet need them. Sigh. I thought I'd finally found something I could easily toss.

(Moral of the story: don't throw anything out!)

(Moral #2: Owners of old houses need extensive inventory of all sorts of odds and ends, because the new parts NEVER fit right.)

I have almost a whole house inside my 100 year old house---remnants of all the old houses that have been torn down around me. I couldn't bear to think of them in a landfill. I should start my own ebay store...

TCB - How are you finding the audience's reactions to the added aspects of the play, dealing with the personal aspects of Anne Frank, that were not part of the original play?  Any audible murmurs in the audience about the (so to speak) frankness of these issues?

So far, FJL, during the preview and the opening night performances, I haven't heard any murmurs from the audience during the (pardon the pun) frank moments.  Several audience members questioned me about the changes during the reception last night, but no one seemed shocked.  The only shocking thing, so far, seems to be the fact that the cast strips down before going to bed (long underwear, slips, etc) during the course of the play.

In fact, Matt just finished restoring an old door on the 3rd floor. The thing was in REALLY bad shape--layers and layers of old paint, a 3" diameter hole where the door knob should be, and, of course, it's not a standard size. He did a fabulous job with it. He sanded it down to bare wood, filled all the seams and filled in the hole. It looks like a new door, but without the "new" look; he kept enough character (read "dents") to keep it charming. And he also found an old rimlock to use for a door knob. I'm thrilled. I always prefer to restore than replace, but this door, well, I wasn't sure how much could be done.

A carpenter friend, who works primarily on old houses, used to keep many of the doors and such that his clients were tossing. Brian installed many of them in his house. I never saw the house, but every piece had a story--whose house it came from, what they replaced it with (good or bad), etc. I imagine there was quite an array of styles, too. Must have been interesting!

May you live in interesting times.
My version: May you live in an interesting house.

I certainly feel like babyfatso in my dress.  Rehearsal was dismal, one more this afternoon and then the show this evening.

If nothing else...it will be OVER!

I have been a part of the entertainment personnel for several awards night presentations during the years, and I often felt this way. Good or bad, it least it will be OVER! I haven't done one of those for about ten years, and it's no accident that I haven't. I really loathe to be a part of something thrown together without proper rehearsal or thoughtful staging.

Very interesting LAW & ORDER episode from last night. With preacher Ted Haggard in the news this week proclaiming to now be 100% completely heterosexual, this week's "ripped from the headlines" story could have been based a bit on him: a gay actor who had an affair with a married minister of an "electronic church" is found dead, and the minister is arrested for the murder.

The murderer was very easy to spot in the story, but there did remain at the conclusion some questions about redemption, phoniness, and commercialism.

Pretty good episode.

I watched another forty minutes or so of SERENITY, but with a little less than an hour to go, and knowing how sad the movie ends, I think I may pass on finishing it and simply move on to MATCH POINT tonight. That's definitely first on the agenda.

Back from the seminar thing, which was fun, I guess.  Certainly the panel was an interesting cross section: Me, cult filmmaker Monte Hellman, and fellow directors Michael Dinner, Arthur Alan Seidelman, Penelope Spheeris, Mel Stuart, and a couple of others whose names escape me.  Mr. Seidelman and Mr. Stuart spoke quite a bit, but I got a few comments in and the crowd seemed to like what I had to say - the crowd being aspiring screenwriters.  I, of course, was the only panel member who was a writer/director, so I had something to say that they didn't.

Well, the laundry is in the dryers, I've had some dinner, and all I have to do is pack, print out some computer lists, and pack.  My brother called around 10:30 to say that dad was being released around 11:45 am and would be coming back to his house.  He said that dad was looking better, but my mother rallied four days before she died.

The day has been good: we edited 3 numbers, I packed up edits to be shipped to me, and I was glad to be away from the personal angst.  After the TOD, it was interesting to see that one horoscope for the day told me that family matters were a priority and the forecast for Monday was an emphasis on inheritance.

Thank you all again for the vibes, good wishes and sympathy, dear friends, and to the four DRs who offered mileage, air fare, and financial support, I can only tell you how much it was appreciated and how grateful I am for such generosity.  Perhaps someday I will take you up on those offers!

Lines we wish we'd have said (sometimes brain's don't work fast enough - I came up with this line about a half-hour ago as I was telling Cason about the seminar).

At our lunch table was Mr. Seidelman.  They were bringing the sandwiches out and offered him a chicken salad sandwich.  He said in a certain tone, "Do you have something else?  I'm a VEGETARIAN."  If only I'd been quick enough, I would have replied, "Oh, Arthur, you've eaten more meat than anyone in this room."  I'm sure some here will get the humor.

DR Matthew - Thanks for your review of Legally Blonde.  I'm really looking forward to it - well, moreso now.  I had talked with Michael Rupert a bit about it before they headed out to San Francisco, and he commented that the whole production and artistic team was being very 'smart' about how they were approaching the material.  He seemed very optimistic.  I also have the demos and those sound great too - "Ohmigod You Guys" seems like a perfect opening number even just listening to it.

Of course, I think what some "critics" will find to dislike about it will be the fact that it may seem "old-fashioned", that the show is not necessarily breaking any new ground.  Why can't something just be "good" nowadays? and leave it at that.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I remember my cousins and my brothers making our own ouija board one time at a party, and we set it up and spooked ourselves out for a while.  I don't recall anything truly spooky happening, but you have a bunch of nine and ten-year olds with wild imaginations thinking they're conjuring up spirits and ghosts, well...  That can just be spooky enough.

I've never had my fortune told, and, frankly, I'm actually scared to have it done.  I guess I don't mind keeping the unknown unknown.  However, a friend of mine did do a basic astrological chart for me once, and he was pretty dead on about my general psychological makeup.  -I'm VERY Virgo.  He then told me that he reads palms, tea leaves and Tarot cards...  And I passed on those options.  -Mainly because I didn't want to have a friend of mine knowing more about me than I knew about myself.  ;)

OH!  I wish I could.  I don't even think I can make it to The Cupboard this year.  With the current schedule, I get an hour break for lunch, and then about an hour and a half for dinner, so any BBQ excursion would have to be quick.  -Which is not the way to enjoy BBQ.  But we shall see what happens over the next two days.  *However, people have been commenting that the BBQ they serve in the hotel restaurant is pretty good.  Alas, like most hotel restaurants, it's overpriced.

I planted three small ones (one gallon container) in October. The butterflies found them, all right. The caterpillars ate every leaf. They are nothing but strings now, trying mightily to grow tiny leaves.

While I have never had any kind of real card reading of any sort, I must give off vibes of an absolute mark.  I can't count the number of times I've walked past a storefront fortune teller only to have these people rush to the door or pound on their window urgently calling me over.  I always give a friendly "no thanks" wave and walk away, but it is spooky how many times this has happened to me.

When I was a youngen, my sister got a ouija board for Christmas and we pretty much took it as seriously as we did the Kreskin's ESP game.  Some people look ready to faint when I tell them how I used to play with the heart-shaped ouija platter all the time as a space ship for my little Lost In Space figures, but then I used to play with mercury, too.

I don't know - the character that Penny Peyser plays is someone who lost their parents in a concentration camp - doesn't sound like a laugh riot, but then you never know.

Oh dear. I would be fidgety at that one. I would have to take off my shoes for sure!

Dear Dear Reader Der Brucer,

If your grandlad likes A Series of Unfortunate Events, I would also recommend the Eddie Dickens Trilogy by Philip Ardagh. And if he likes Harry Potter, he might also like the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo and the Children of the Lamp series by P.B. Kerr.

Back onto eerie experiences...
Not long before my father passed away, I flew out to California to visit him in the hospital. He kept asking me where I was going to stay. I was staying at his house, but the conversation kept going around in circles. Then it came out that he'd had a dream that my house had burned down. At the time I thought it was just a dream--after all, he was on drugs and dreams can be strange, anyway. Just about a year later I was having the outside of the house painted when the house did indeed catch on fire inside a wall--the painter didn't realize it--and the fire damaged one corner of the house, all three floors. Had I not been home and smelled the smoke, and had the Fire Department not arrived quickly, I could have indeed lost the house. How did my dad know?

I finally got around to Woody Allen's MATCH POINT tonight. What a disspiriting and repetitive movie it was! The serious half of CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS without the (much needed) comic relief of the Allen/Alda storyline. What's more, I didn't care about a single leading person in the movie; found them all rather self-involved and brittle, so I ultimately didn't care what happened to any of them.

Yes, it was lovely to see the always special Margaret Tyzack in a brief role, and I love to hear Colin Salmon's voice in any movie or TV show. But that's slim pickings in a movie that's otherwise a tedious melodrama. And using those scratchy, tinny-sounding Enrico Caruso recordings for the soundtrack really grated on my nerves after awhile, too.

Post by: Matt H. on February 10, 2007, 08:25:58 PM
After the bitter taste of MATCH POINT, I wanted something gay-themed, so I put in ADAM & STEVE. I watched it about six months ago and knew it wasn't a great movie, but it does have that kicky two-step dance sequence and Malcolm Gets' lovely rendition of "Something Good." So I watched the whole thing again.

Post by: Matt H. on February 10, 2007, 08:27:39 PM
And staying with the gay theme, I then put in THIRD MAN OUT and watched the first third of it. I'll finish it tomorrow.

After I finish it tomorrow, I'll watch BREAKFAST ON PLUTO which is on the DVR. I honestly didn't know whether it was going to be depressing or not, and after MATCH POINT, I just wasn't up for anything that was a downer.

TOD, I have had my cards read, my palm read, my charts done you name it. I used to read cards for awhile, but I never really got past looking in the book, so I'm not sure that counts.

I have had some really good readings, especially a palm reader in New Orleans. He was fascinating. It was a very positive reading, but the things he said about me were so right on that I told a couple friends about it. One went to him and walked back totally amazed at the things he had been told.

I do get an individual horoscope from Jonathan Cainer's website.  It is uncannily accurate.

I have had some very bad readings as well.  One woman kept telling me about my children and my husband. Having neither, I just smiled and realized I'd kissed that money good bye.

I had my palm read while I was in Japan some years ago. I recall something about heart trouble in my 40s and if that didn't kill me I would live to be in my 70s.

He also said I was too gentle for women. I wonder what he meant by that.

Of course it was all be translated by a Japanese friend of the old school chum I was staying with.

No, no ghost.  At least none that I've met in the past year.

For the first few years that I lived here there were a number of times when I'd be alone in the house, on the second floor, and SWEAR that there was someone above me on the third floor. I'd go upstairs and check--no one. Then one day a painter was in the house by himself. When I got home he asked me if I had a ghost; he'd had the same experience. I had never mentioned the "ghost" to anyone. Then I learned that many people in my neighborhood, and many people in other old houses--some who never believed in ghosts--have similar stories to tell. I've since decided that many of those sounds were actually coming from the house my house abuts. Noises do carry in some funny ways. The jury's still out about the ghost. I wouldn't mind--as long as he/she doesn't throw things!

Well, this totally depends on whether or not you understand the ramifications of belief in multi-dimensional personality.  She may very well have been giving you an accurate reading...but the "you" in an alternate plane of existence.

:D

The multi-dimensional personality is one "being" living different lives on multiple planes of existence simultaneously.  This is often why folks dream about themselves or those they know in different jobs, situations, etc.  These dreams are simply tapping into the core of the multi-dimensional personality and giving you images of what other lives your personality is experiencing.

It's more complicated than I can (or care to) go into here, but look up books by Jane Roberts...especially those with "Seth" in the title.

:D

Cogitating, as it were, over HDTV and the joys of widescreen EVERYthing.

If only it weren't so daunting....and if only "accessories" and "necessities", etc., weren't being thrown at me as "must-haves", all of which, when totaled, cost more than the costly plasma set itself.

I watched "The Da Vinci Code" this afternoon.

I had not read the book.

I had no preconceived notions.

I found "the movie" entertaining, if not particularly suspenseful.  Ian McKellen was wonderful

Tom Hanks was bloated.

Audrey Tautou was pretty.

Zimmer's score was unmemorable and typically ostentatious.

While reading the site, I realized I hadn't seen "Arthur" in a while, so I put the DVD in and enjoyed every second.  The I decided to watch another DVD so I finally opened the 2-disc "State Fair" DVD and decided on the 1960 version.  I haven't seen either movie before and I have a feeling I watched the "wrong" one.  It was quite boring.  I started to watch the 1976 TV pilot, but found it very strange from the first two minutes.  I might give it another chance sometime.  I will definatly watch the 1945 movie soon, though.

Tomorrow is more Pippin tech.  The first four hours got us not very far today, and I don't know how much was covered after I left.  Hopefully they made it to Act Two.
