Well, you've read the notes, you feel Irish, you feel green, and now it is time to post until the Irish cows come home.  Sure and begorrah.

And here's our director, Paul, in front of the newsdesk (shot in front of a green screen so they can key in whatever background they like when they're ready).

Bollocks!

In the DVD:  Sex, Chips, & Rock 'n' Roll.  A very entertaining British mini-series that I bought on a whim in the $4.99 clearout bin at the local video rental place.  Though I checked the DVD's box to make sure it was complete....it was only three episodes, odd for a Brit limited series, usually at least six...there was nothing to indicate it wasn't, so I took a chance.  The Lovely Wife and I immediately got hooked into it, but when I was starting the second episode, The Lovely Wife noticed it said Disc One on the Menu.  We hoped against hope.  No such luck.  We got to the end of episode three and there was obviously more (I later found a small insignia on the spine of the DVD that said Disc One on the outside).

Anyway, I went out on a search mission for Disc Two today.  The original Video Hut down in my neighbourhood where I found Disc One was my first stop.  No Disc Two.  And the clerk was the usual open-mouthed, drooling cretin who knew nothing about his stock.  Next to Amoeba.  They didn't have it.  Next to Video Journeys in Silverlake which has everything to rent...and by this time, I'd have been satisfied just to rent it...But they didn't have it either, BUT...

...there was another Video Hut across the street.  I entered in trepidation (and then exited out of trepidation and went into Video Hut where I had been headed in the first place) and rooted through the clearout bin.  There it was...the title, the same cover. For $5.99, not $4.99 this time...but which Disc was it?  I flipped it over and looked on the back...Episodes 4,5,6!  Eureka!  Hallelujah!  The only one they had (Naturally, they didn't have Disc One...Why are they selling these as seperates?).

Anyway, I snapped it up and Disc Two was as eminently satisfying as Disc One.  It is about Manchester and London in 1965 and young rock 'n' roll hopefuls and great performances by a lot of swell actors.

Tonight the DVD will be Satomi Hakken Den...an interesting sounding  Japanese fantasy that I'm watching because it is work-related, although The Lovely Wife thinks it sounds like Japanese Hagen Daas.

BK, I could see where STONES IN HIS POCKETS could fall flat if the actors aren't top-notch and in sync.

As of now, nothing in the CD player.

From an English-to-American dictionary.

bollocks n. How do I put this delicately... bollocks are testicles. The word is in pretty common use in the UK and works well as a general "surprise" expletive in a similar way to bugger. The phrase "the dog's bollocks" is used to describe something particularly good (yes, good) - something like "see that car - it's the dog's bollocks, so it is." We also describe a big telling-off as a bollocking, and additionally use the word to mean "rubbish" (as in "well, that's a load of bollocks").

And from an Irish site:

me bollocks: my ass.

bollocks!:  bullshit!

I will in me bollocks (polite form: "in me eyeball"): I will not.

Ask me bollocks (or "ask me left one"): Yeah, right.

made a bollocks of it: screwed that one up.

Title: Re:BOLLOCKS
Post by: Ben on June 11, 2004, 06:07:32 AM
Yes, Dan, he is at Goodspeed. He left sometime this week and will return to NYC in mid-July.

Well, Anthony thanks you, his mother thanks you, his father thanks you and I thank you for all the birthday wishes from yesterday and Wednesday. We had a nice, relaxed and quiet day. We did, indeed, go to the Museum of Radio and Television. I had gotten some free passes a while ago and this was a perfect opportunity to use them. Since we're not members we were limited to two hours of viewing time. We chose Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall, the marvelous 1962 show broadcast on CBS. It had all the vintage Lipton tea commercials done by George Feneman. The show was part of CBS Summerama so all the tea commercials were for Iced Tea. Did you know that even with sugar, Lipton Iced Tea is low-calorie. I guess they worried about calories even in 1962. The show, btw, was wonderful. I had heard it many times on vinyl and a cassette tape made years ago. I was suprised to find that the chorus was all men. In my mind I thought it was a mixed chorus of men and women but it was just Julie and Carol with an early version of the Ernie Flatt dancers. After that we watched a very odd Elaine Stritch piece from the early 1950s called Once Upon a Tune-The Three Little Pigs. It was from the Dumont Network. A musical updating of the Three Little Pigs story with Elaine and two other women (there were no performer credits, they must have been lopped off) and three men. It was fascinating to watch but it was also pretty bad. There were some original songs and some pop standards (of the day) interpolated. By the time we got around to the last piece we were running short on time so we didn't get to watch the entire Wonderful Town with Roz Russel. We scanned through and watched her big numbers and some of the other pieces. My, my, my (that's three mys) she was thrown around by those Brazilian sailors in the Conga number, wasn't she?

We also got to see part of a Muppets 30th Anniversary retrospective which was already playing by the time we got to the Museum. Sandra, I saw your namesake, the Swedish Chef. How exciting. The Muppets were funny then and they are still funny now!

Since people are posting Mind Sticking lyrics here every so often, I thought I would grace the site with these little pot stickers (after seeing the Muppets yesterday)

Dance your cares away,
Worry's for another day.
Let the music play,
Down at Fraggle Rock.

Repeat 4 times and then try to get it out of your mind!

We had dinner at a nice little Mexican restaurant. I had a chicken tostada and a soft vegetable taco and Anthony had a chili burrito. Later in the evening, instead of cake, we had lovely chocolate cupcakes and Vanilla Fudge Swirl Ice Cream. A good time was had by all!

I have nothing in the CD player at work. I just took out some CDs from the Library so at home I have Scrambled Feet, the soundtrack from For the Boys (Midler's homage to Martha Raye), Sunday in the Park w/George, Jerry Herman's Miss Spectacular, the Disney soundtrack for Pinocchico (one of my favorite animated films), the Disney soundtrack for Lady and the Tramp, the London cast recording of My Fair Lady and Do I Hear a Waltz (OBC). I also found the 1982 London Cast Recording of Camelot with Richard Harris at another Library last week. Did I mention that last week? I forget.

Oh, well. Enough of this. I will go to work now and pop in later.

I am in a mood most foul. Don't ask why...I might bite your head off. I don't know why I'm in a mood most foul, but I am. It might be because of Dragon Lady at work. She's been much more amiable in the last few weeks, but she still bothers me. When I came in this morning, she was already on the phone with her boyfriend. At 9:00 in the morning. This, from a girl who gets on average 15 personal calls a day. Why do we need so many personal calls? And why do we need to be on the phone at 9:00?  And why do most of the personal calls come from her mother? Shouldn't she know better and set a better example for her daughter?

The director of business affairs has called a messenger to pick something up. Thing is--the messenger's here and the D.B.A. is on the phone and doesn't have his package ready to go. Why would you call a messenger if you don't have your package ready to be messengered? It's stupid things like that that really stick in my craw. What the hell is a craw, anyway, and why do things stick in it?

I think part of the reason I'm so grumpy is because I went to the gym last night and pretty much killed myself. I haven't been working out like I should, and I did nearly forty-five minutes on the elliptical. I managed over four miles and 600 calories. Normally that wouldn't have been so bad, but last night was my first night in the gym in five days, I guess. I should have eased back into it, but I just went for it and I think maybe now I'm dehydrated, which always makes me bitchy. I'm filling up on water now, and I'm waiting for some orange juice to be delivered with my bagel (blueberry...toasted w/butter), so hopefully that will raise my blood sugar a bit and perk me up.

Media Check:
DVD: Oz, Season One Disc One
VHS: Still not working
CD: VIOLET, PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES and OIL CITY SYMPHONY. What a strange grouping, huh?

'Avenue Q': The Fallout
By JASON ZINOMAN

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/11/theater/newsandfeatures/11BROA.html

I've been thinking about this whole Avenue Q idea of them skipping the tour and just doing Vegas.  I wonder why they couldn't do BOTH.

I do think that the road producers have a right to be mad, since it seems they were assured that the show would tour.  But is anybody else ANNOYED that these people don't simply vote for the best show.

It makes the Best Musical prize seem like a joke, when the road producers say they would have changed their vote if they had known Q had no chance to tour.  Why are these people even allowed to vote if getting the show at their venue is their only motivation?

Jennifer: They can't do both because they made an exclusive agreement with the presenter in Vegas. New York and Vegas only. That's the deal and now they have to stick to it.

Re. voting for the best show. Well, unfortunately, the Tonys (especially in the Best Musical and Best Revival categories) have become more of a marketing device than a reward for outstanding work. In this case, I suppose AVENUE Q did deserve the award--it's a wonderful production--but so is WICKED. I was very happy for AVE. Q when it won, but I won't lie--something seems fishy to me about their "campaign" promises, and it's left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. They knew they could garner more votes if they announced a tour, so they did. And now they're un-announcing it. I think that's incredibly shady, but I'm also not so naive that I can't see that this was a very smart campaign move.

I feel badly for the show's authors--it sounds like they had very little or no say in what is going on. Even if they did know, they did stellar work and they deserved their Tonys. The authors have done their jobs...now it's up to the producers to maintain some integrity. While technically doing their job (making the show a financial success), the producers have tainted the win for their show. I'm not sure that they expected so many people to be up in arms about this, but they've made their piddle. Now they have to clean it up.

I think  JULIE AND CAROL AT CARNEGIE HALL is my favorite one hour TV special, and I've watched it at the Museum many times. WONDERFUL TOWN is also a fantastic production, and I've watched it quite a bit there, too. Sadly, I don't happen to have a video of either production.

One thing that surprised me the most the first time I saw JULIE AND CAROL there was that the Columbia recording of the show is not a soundtrack but rather a studio recording of the music they did that night. I guess to get real stereo separation, they had to record the musical numbers in the studio. The stereo separation is VERY distinct on the JULIE AND CAROL LP/CD.

Jason, well said! I was very happy for Avenue Q on Sunday night but as the week goes on I just feel a bit let down. As you said, I don't think the creative team or the cast had any knowledge or say in the deal but they will feel the sting of the brouhaha also.

Wow, we have much more to go to get to PAGE TWO!

Maybe this will help.

From a Long Beach Press Telegram (http://u.presstelegram.com/Stories/0,1413,218~24207~2204392,00.html) review of "The Stepford Wives":

Wit, but not profit

The actual show-up numbers are much more minuscule (and the interest in lucrative offshore markets is, for all practical purposes, nonexistent). Recent political satires such as Warren Beatty's "Bulworth," Tim Robbins' "Bob Roberts," Alexander Payne's "Citizen Ruth" and "Election," Mike Nichols' "Primary Colors" and documentarian Michael Moore's lone fictional feature, "Canadian Bacon," have met with a collective multiplex yawn despite mostly rapturous critical reactions. Only "Wag the Dog" really connected at the box office, and that might have been because it was as much a satire of Hollywood as it was of geo- and sexual politics.
Which also connected it, in however tertiary a manner, to the one satire subset that has proven a fairly sure commercial bet in the last quarter century. Moviegoers will laugh at just about anything that parodies movies, a subject that they are, by nature, familiar with.

These films, almost all of which follow a format established by "Airplane!" in 1980, are more technically spoofs ("a lighthearted imitation of someone or something" - Webster's College). But ever since Mad magazine, the guiding consciousness behind the entire genre, started calling its movie lampoons satires in the 1950s, the expanded interpretation has stuck.

Unlike satires of more serious subjects, movie spoofs don't have to be smart. "Austin Powers" and "`Scary Movie" entries, which often do little more than just reference pop-culture imagery, can do as well or better than the "Naked Guns" or "Screams" of the world, which actually strive to be clever.

Of course, satire is not just about popularity. It wasn't in Kaufman's day either, nor, likely, back when Aristophanes and Lucian or Voltaire and Swift were practicing the snarky art.

Their works will live forever, as most likely will such classic satirical films as "Being There," "Dr. Strangelove," "The Great Dictator," "Sullivan's Travels" and "Young Frankenstein." It would be a shame if the demand of the current corporatized media marketplace prevented future such entries in that hard-to-love but noble field.

Of course, successful satires would have to be funny, too. And that may be the biggest stumbling block of all on the new "Stepford" path.

der Brucer (Hmmm..."...the demand of the current corporatized media marketplace prevented future such entries in that hard-to-love but noble field... - is WEL ghost writing?)

RE: Avenue Q

I don't know if the producers knew that they weren't going to tour when they made those promises.  It does seem possible that they were merely looking at Vegas as an option (and like one of the producers said, these things fall through all the time).

But I don't believe they should have made the promises if they weren't sure they could deliver.

Does anyone else find it interesting though that the Vegas deal was completed BEFORE the Tony win?  I mean why would the Vegas guy have been as anxious to build a $40M theatre if the show had not won Best Musical.  It seems MUCH more appealing now.

According to sources here at MTI, the Vegas deal has been in the works for a very, very long time. They only informed Jeff and Robert last week, but they have been planning this from the get-go. Again, that's second-hand information, but it comes from a very, VERY reliable source. I have no problem with them opening a sit-down production in Vegas. I have no problem with them not touring. I DO have a problem with the producers saying at their pizza party for out-of-town voters, "AVENUE Q is coming to America." Their posters read, "America Needs Q." Now, last time I checked, America is much larger than Las Vegas. It's even bigger than New York! Now the producers are back-peddling, saying that AVENUE Q is coming to America because America comes to Vegas. Bollucks, I say.

The producers aren't stupid...they know a show like AVENUE Q won't play well in Peoria or Oklahoma City. They know that they'll all make a killing off their Vegas production. I just find it ironic that such a big deal was made about WICKED being the big, bad money making machine...and now Q is going to the money capitol of the U.S.--in a $40 million handbasket.

Very sad news here. The best man at my neices wedding this last April was killed in a car accident yesterday. He was only 23 years old and was on his way back to from taking his finals at Oregon State University in Corvallis...he was to graduate this weekend. I remember him at the wedding ...he was just the life of the party...quite a comedian. Such a tragedy. ...I hate the idea of them purposely misrepresenting the facts (if that is what happened).  But I'm beginning to despise how these road producers vote.  And it's actually sort of funny if they only voted for Avenue Q because of its touring potential.

Like I said before, it's not always about rewarding quality...it's about filling seats. Presenters across the country knew that WICKED would tour well with or without the Tony. Ultimately, AVENUE Q is a "better" show than WICKED...the score is catchy, the lyrics clever...but it's also "edgy" (they use the 'F' word a lot and have naked puppets having sex on stage). That makes the show difficult to sell in the Midwest. I think the presenters felt that if AVENUE Q got the extra push to make it win Best Musical it would be a much more viable product for them. People are much more willing to see a show with 'F' words and internet porn if it's the Best Musical of 2004. Now the producers have turned the tables on the presenters, already having their votes, and have used the Best Musical award to their greater advantage by booking an open-ended run in a high profile location. None of us here knows the full story, but as I said, I have a very reliable source here at the office and I know a lot more than I'm allowed to share with you. Trust me, there are shady dealings going on here on the part of the producers of the show. You are right, though, to think that it's a crappy thing for Tony voters to cast ballots based on what show will tour the best. It just so happens that this year it's come back to bite the presenters in the ass. But that, I suppose, is why this is called Show BUSINESS.

Seriously, though, I am very sorry to hear about what happened. That is so very sad.

Sandra, you're a mess! :-)

Why thank you.

Some of my neighbors were sitting outside watching us as we took those pictures. I think I heard them laughing at me.

By the by, Jason, you have no idea how much fattening junk I put in those cookies (and this pudding, as a matter of fact) and you did promise an extra hour on your elliptical machine... Maybe I should teach you how to do The Tap-Dancing Gazelle. It's a real workout. Although people tend to laugh at you if you do it where anyone can see you...

Thanks Jrand53...

Did you listen to the Thunderbirds soundtrack? It is a lot of fun! There are a couple of new Thunderbirds DVDs coming out soon. One has the two Thunderbird's movies (I saw one of them on TV recently, Thunderbirds are Go and it was a stinkeroo, let me tell you...very dull), and a best of Thunderbirds TV episodes. There are like 6 episodes (including one episdoe that has that fun pop-up thing that TechTV had) and it retails for only about $16.00, which is a very good price if you happened to see how much they were asking for the previous DVD releases of those episodes!

And as I am about done with my Stingray episodes it will be a good time to see some more Thunderbird shows!!

My question is will AVENUE Q do business in a 1,200 seat theatre 10 times a week?  I read that CHICAGO was booked there a few years ago and had to cut its engagement short due to lack of business... and CHICAGO is much more the type of entertainment that people who go to Vegas seem to like.

Good Afternoon!

Topic of the Day:

DVD: "Camp" - And I've started organizing the pile of other DVDs that I will be watching in the coming weeks.  The one "problem" I'm having is deciding how I should "prioritize" the DVDs of movies that I have already seen in the theatre vs. ones I've never seen before.  I didn't think that would be a problem, but it is.  Decisions, decisions...

CD: Various vocalists: Janis Siegel, Cheryl Bentyne, Jessica Molaskey, etc.; Avenue Q; Bill Charlap Trio CDs - I really want to play like this guy!  Soo good!

VCR: Nothing, but I'm getting ready to tape the new "Trading Spaces: Unglued" special this weekend for a certain DR who's VCR is not working right now, but, what the heck?  ;)

Let me explain something: The producers of Avenue Q hope the Vegas run will be successful.  However, it doesn't really matter one way or another since they received an advance of millions of dollars from Mr. Wynn.  That's what it's about.  They were offered a huge amount of money and they took it.  If the show plays three weeks and loses Mr. Wynn all that money plus the 40mil for his theater, they producers of Avenue Q will not care an iota.  At that point, they'll simply try to tour it.

As for Avenue Q in Vegas...

Possible "shady dealings" aside, I feel it is a good move for the show.  For the "integrity of the show" - notice, I said the "show" not the "producers".  As has been stated in some of the recent articles, Avenue Q would most likely get lost in most of the large touring houses on the road.  The show works because of it's "smallness".  It works because you can see the actors faces.  It works because you can see the video monitors on the sides of the stage.  It works because it's a show about a couple of puppets and a couple of humans.  It is not a "big chorus" show.  It's not even a "big ensemble" show.

If the producers were able to book the show into smaller venues on the road, there would be most likely no way for it make any money on the road - unless it played extended runs in each city.  But having the show play "caverns" would most definitely work against Avenue Q.  -Heck, I'd say the tour of Urinetown has experienced the same thing.  *And even Urinetown cancelled some of it's earlier bookings - including Washington, DC(!) due to low advance ticket sales.  ???

As for Avenue Q being able to succeed in Vegas...  We'll have to see how it gets marketed or "campaigned" out there. ;)  If I remember correctly, Chicago played a large house, and it also had Chita Rivera in the cast for a while.  So it had a high weekly running cost.  And even though Chicago may seem the right type of show for Vegas, it was/is still a "show", not a revue.  I could easily see some audience members who were coming in expecting to see lots and lots of dancing done by men and women in sexy black costumes getting a bit restless between dance numbers.  Avenue Q doesn't claim to be an extravaganza of any sort, so, again, we shall see what happens.

-In the meantime, if people in Vegas want to see a "Broadway" show, they can catch Mamma Mia!, and the Frankie Avalon tour of Grease is scheduled to make the move there soon - although I'm not sure if Mr. Avalon will be staying with the show, but I don't see how the show could be a draw without him.  -And didn't Footloose run in Vegas for a while?  42nd Street? Is Startlight Express back there already too?

Oh - and on related fronts:

I remember seeing the announcement of Mr. Wynn's new "complex" a few weeks ago.  It will be the largest "hotel" in Vegas by the time it is completed.  And I also believe that Cirque du Soleil will be coming up with a new show for the new theatre that it will be getting in that complex.  And I believe an "entertainer" (can't recall which one right now), is slated for another venue there - like Celine Dion.

And who's to say that the whole complex will be completed and up and running by the Fall of 2005?

And if the out-of-town block of voters comprises only about 15% of the Tony vote, would Avenue Q still have taken home the Best Musical Tony had none of the out-of-town voters voted for the show. Could it have?  Should it have?

As we've stated here on this board many times in regards to many different situations, it is called "Show Business".  And as they say in Dreamgirls,

Showbiz is just showbiz.

And who's to say that the whole complex will be completed and up and running by the Fall of 2005?

Wouldn't that be a coup if the thing wasn't ready to open by then? Yikes!

I agree with everything Jose said...and over my last four hundred posts I think I've said just about everything he said. The producers will make/have already made their money...I think people are just disappointed now. It'll blow over soon enough.

And now...lunch!

As for chocolate pudding for breakfast - hey, it has milk in it doesn't it?  If it was a real pudding it would also have eggs too!  Well, at least egg yolks!  Next time, just add some granola on top!  Or some strawberries!  Or some whipped cream!  (just more dairy)

And as for Wicked on tour...  I'm just wondering how much of the physical production will remain intact for the tour.  Besides some of the obvious set pieces, the amount of other special effects and lighting(!!!) is quite sizable.  Of course, people were saying The Lion King and The Producers would never tour, so...

OK - I've dawdled enough.  Time for me to make some more headway in my bedroom.  -Which, thankfully, mainly consists of switching out my "winter" bedding, and folding the rest of the laundry I did yesterday.

Annoyed, yes.  Surprised, no.

The show's producers went for the money.

The road producers voted because of where they thought they'd get the money.

Next to what part of the anatomy do most men keep their wallets?

(I, on the other hand, have kept my wallet in my front pants pocket for years.)

Actually a 1,200 seat theatre is even a little big for Q.  And does Vegas have a special Equity contract allowing ten shows a week instead of eight or will this be a non-union production?  I know that Equity does allow more performances if the show is under 90 minutes, but that would mean cutting and/or eliminating the intermission... oh wait... that was what shows used to do in vegas.

According to the female producer of the show (I can't remember her name...something Goodman), the show will be presented in it's entirety with no cuts. I'm sure that they will not be cutting the intermission, nor will they do 10 shows a week.

Dear Sandra (and others):

Clearly, you are in need of some recipes, to break you of your pre-packaged food habits.  I therefor suggest the following, all from the Good Eats episode, "Oat Cuisine."

First, here is a recipe for Steel Cut Oatmeal. (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_17140,00.html)

If you have more time, or are better prepared, here is a recipe for Overnight Oatmeal. (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_17138,00.html)

And, if you're up for a real challenge, I suggest trying this link. (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_17236,00.html)

Equity has special contracts all over the country.  Even Ford's Theatre has it's own special "Historical Theatre" contract.

A show can run more than 8, full-length, performances a week if the producers are willing to ante up the money.  They also would have the option of having two casts with a bunch of swings.  *Going back to Ford's - when they run their version of A Christmas Carol, they have some 9, 10 and 11 shows weeks - they even had a 12-show week once.  And that show is definitely not 90 minutes of less.

If the theatre is configured correctly, 1200 seats could work out very well.

In other words, anything is possible.

I'm just hoping that the Vegas run will have the same accessibility options that they provide in New York.

Reading about all the machinations behind the wooing of out of town producers for the Tony reminds me once again that NO show business awards are based solely on merit, and we all probably put too much importance on them.

Not even critics' awards are arrived at on merit alone. I'll never forget reading about the conference room war that erupted in 1972 between members of the New York Film Critics Circle who couldn't decide between Marlon Brando, Al Pacino (both for THE GODFATHER), and Peter O'Toole (for THE RULING CLASS). The critics went back and forth arguing the merits of the three fine performances but after rounds and rounds of balloting, none of the three men could poll a majority. So, who got Best Actor of 1972 from the august New York Film Critics? Laurence Olivier for SLEUTH, a choice who wasn't first pick on a single critics' ballot but who all of them could live with if their own first choice wasn't going to be selected.

The infamous Times article that started all the discussion said there would be ten shows a week but didn't say if there would be alternate casts.  It's not that easy of a show to cast... you need four people who can sing, act and operate puppets, an Asian woman and a short Black woman who looks a little like Gary Coleman.  In New York, they cast four people who used to work for Jim Henson, although I'm sure that most future casting will be actors who are taught puppetry rather than puppeteers.

The ninety-minute rule I know of is what is in effect for the Theatre at Madison Square Garden; in order to do two or three performances a day of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, WIZARD OF OZ, etc. with the same cast, each show can last no more than ninety minutes.

I'm sorry Jane. This is in a Paint document. "Image" is one of the menus at the top. Then you attach the Paint document on the Reply page.

And if "10" is too small, just put in a bigger number.

DR MattH, I suppose if you have a satellite or live near the border you too could watch Canadian tv.

I get your point.  But in Canada we watch a lot of American tv.  I mean that is basically all I watch.  The big shows here (Survivor, Friends ...) are mostly American.  And we get all the same buzz about finales and new shows that you get.

DRJANE I didn't have to resize your photo at all.

Right click on a photo you want to use and then click on "properties" as long as both of those numbers in "dimensions" are in the 400's, you are pretty safe in posting it as is.

It is only when one of the numbers or both are in the 500's or 600's that we go into w i d e s c r e e n!  So just check the properties!
Title: Re:BOLLOCKS

For example, if you right click on your photo above and then click Properties you will see that the dimensions are 360x480 pixels, a perfect size for HHW!

The young pros ought to learn something from the old pros.  I find it entirely nauseating with this new generation of Broadway leading player - leaving because they have concert dates occasionally, or a TV show to film, or because they have a headache - old pros don't miss performances unless there's an emergency of the highest order.

BK, I do agree that a number of younger performers miss a lot of shows.  But I don't think Idina Menzel is one of them.  She has been doing the show 8 days a week (I believe she's only missed a few shows).  IF she wants to do a film and then come back (instead of leaving the show), I don't really have a problem with that.

Somehow I ended up on page 5 without seeing my own photo.  Then I saw Jennifer's post and went back a page.  I guess that is what happens when I have too many interuptions.

Jennifer I tried posting in the attach box and it didn't work.  I waited for almost five minutes then had to close the site and re-enter.

I took that photo at the top of a new driveway where a new house will be built.  I will miss the walk up the hill once they begin building.

I think I caught up on everything but if I miss something, I'm sorry.

I've seen lots of pictures!  Jane, that one is just lovely!  I wish I could vist with my dogs and have all of our babies go for walk down that trail. Wow!

Speaking of photos, I promised pictures of the parade for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

All were taken from the 22nd floor of County Center which is where I work.

Here is the first one:

The #1 is the car with the Stanley Cup in it.

#2 is the team mascot, Lightning Bug

#3 is the tank(!) that followed the car holding the cup.

I didn't know it meant that much or needed that much protection.

George I hit the refresh button.  Everything disappeared but at least I didn’t have to leave the site altogether and start over.

JRand, when I did properties on your post it was different than when I do it on my computer.   Following is what I get (for the one I’m trying to post now)

Size:  55.4 KB (56,756 bytes)

Size on disk:  56.0 KB (57,344 bytes)

I’m trying to learn how to do this without Keith’s help.  The thing is even when he does it he can’t consistently post a picture.  Sometimes he makes the photo as small as possible and it still doesn’t work.  I am putting the jpeg into the attach box.  If it won’t post shouldn’t it at least tell me the photo is too big?

Sorry if I’m getting annoying now.  I will try one more time and give it a rest.

Jane, I use Adobe PhotoShop when I do photos for the board.  It has a "Save for Web" feature and I created a "HHW Board photos" folder that I save them to when I size them.  I never knew what the ideal size was until I saw the 360 X 480 post.    I think I do 300 X 250, one way or the other.

I wrote that down in my little tip book so the next time I do some photos for here, I'll try that size and we'll see how it looks.

Aww, heck, I couldn't wait--here we have:

Ok, here are some of the things I didn’t get to say in the past couple of days, thanks to the weather.

First about the superstitions with the shoes.  I was wondering if anyone here had any others that they follow.

For example, if you ever speak with me on the phone, Jane and Elmore may or may not have noticed this, when I hang up, I NEVER say “Goodbye”.  I’ll say, “By and By” or maybe that’s “Bye and Bye”, anyway, either way you won’t catch me saying “Goodbye” unless I never intend to speak with you again.  That was another thing my Dad taught me.

I don’t know the why of it but he was very, very particular about that.

The next thing I wanted to say was about the roller coasters.  If any of you come to Tampa and you want someone to ride the coasters with at Bush Gardens, give me a call.  I’ll go with you and ride them with you as many times as you like.

That was one sad thing about growing up an only child.  I never had anyone my age (unless my parents allowed me to bring a friend–which wasn’t often) when we went to a park.

I have a Space Mountain story to share.  I first rode it before they slowed it down.  This was when I was around 16 and contacts were out of the question for me.  I had to wear my coke bottle thick glasses.  I had to go on that ride by myself (as always) and they put me in the car by myself.  Now I don’t know if any of you remember this but you were supposed to sit with someone behind you or in front of you.  I was in the car with a seatbelt that was made for two and it was NOT tightened enough.  Top that off with them making me take my glasses off so they wouldn’t fly off and I was both blind and basically unstrapped in that seat.

I think my nail prints are STILL embedded in the sides of that car, where ever in the world it is.  I was never so scared in my entire life!  I was bouncing from one side to the other and when there was a dip, I thought I was going to go flying out of it for sure,

I remember my Mom asking me if I was ok when they met me at the exit of the ride.  She said I was very pale and shaking.  I never forgot it.

I’ve only gotten sick on one ride–the Flying Camel at Bush Gardens but I had eaten a LOT of junk food before going on it.  My fault and I will never do that again.  Lesson learned.

I LOVE the Tilt-A-Whirl.  I could ride that all day.  Hey, anyone want to go a park and go on some rides?!  I'm in the mood!

Get ready because I am going to tell about my trip in SLC .  I hope you enjoy it.  I did!   :D

Well get ready because it up and coming.  I want you to know before I post it that these are the notes I typed on my PDA during the trip.  I'm going to edit them a little bit but didn't add anything to them.  The thoughts about NYC were what I was thinking at the time.

Also, Elmore, if you reading this (and I'm going to e-mail it to you as well) I promised I would send you the address of the Cyber Cafe that I was able to get on line at while I was in NYC.

It was directly across the street from the Milford Plaza in with the Nathan’s Hotdog place was.  Remind me to tell you a story about Nathan’s hotdog.  Well, Nathan’s shrimp really.

CyberCafe

I did find another place but much further away from the hotel.  It was $2.00 for 15 minutes but it would have been to far to walk everyday.  It was down from the Police Station in Times Square.  Down towards the post office (sorry I don’t remember the street name!)

Lord, I'm in Chatty Cathy mode tonight.  I wish we could have chat tonight, I feel like talking.  I don't know why but I can’t seem to type fast enough to keep up with everything that wants to come out of my “mouth”.

I would actually not mind trying Haggis!

Media Check:

CD: Bombay Dreams courtesy of DR Jason

VCR: Assorted Warner Bros. crime shows.

DVD: Strike Me Deadly (1963), and The Madarin Mystery (1936)...both surprisingly good.

And the Bollywood movie this week:

KANYADAAN.
Plot: A pointy nosed man meets a woman with enormous hair. They fall in love, dance a bit, sing a lot, and things happen.

Well, actually this will be a two Bollywood weekend. I happend to start watching this one last night. It is sort of a Gods vs. Demons, fantasy, action, Matrix sort of thing with lots of computer special effects...I really don't know how to describe it. I loved the soundtrack so took a chance on the movie. It isn't too bad although it isn't the sort of thing I would normally choose to watch. But it has a couple of actors in it that I really like so that helps.

As to this week's media check:

In the CD player: Avenue Q, Lawrence Rosenthal's score for The Return of a Man Called Horse (which asks the musical question "Why isn't this man one of the busiest composers in the around?"), and the re-recorded score to Sunset Boulevard by Franz Waxman.

In the deeveedee player: Stargate, The President's Analyst and The Day of the Locust.

The VHS player is still broken.  I'm having trouble caring about it, though.

What I'm reading: I finished off The World's Desire by H. Rider Haggard and Andrew Lang, which was a thunderously good time, and I just started reading Year's Best SF 9, an annual collection of science fiction stories.

SLC TRIP Part 1

Part II tomorrow night.  I don't want to hog all the space.

5/14/04

It's 2:23 AM Mountain time.  I can't sleep so I thought I would write about my day yesterday.  I’ve already ironed all of my clothes.

It started out very early at about 4:00 A. M.

I was very excited about going on the trip but it was very hard saying farewell to Mom.

The van came in a very timely manner but took his time filling out the paperwork.  I fear the school bus driver across the street was a little annoyed that we were in her way when we were sitting there.  I cried a little when the van pulled out.  It was so hard to see Mom standing there as we pulled away.

There was a guy already on the van but he never really spoke-I think he was very tired and just trying to rest the best he could.

The driver was very nice and chatty.  I think his name was Jay.  I guess he knew it is upsetting for some people to leave on a trip so he lightened the mood.

Anyway we went and picked up another lady in south Brandon who was going to NYC!  She was very nice and friendly. We had a nice chat between the three of us while the other guy slept in the back.  She is going to be in NYC for a day or two after I’m there.  Maybe we will run into each other there.

We talked about places to see and things to do.  As excited as I am about SLC and MB, I can’t wait for NYC.

We arrived at the airport in good time and said our good-byes.

I was checked in by curbside service and given my boarding pass and baggage claim tickets. I didn't get the chance to tip the baggage guy but I did the van driver.

Going through security was easier than I thought.  I did have to take my shoes off.  I was very glad that Martin (a guy I work with) had told to me to wear shoes that are easy to slip off & back on.

I called Mom from a pay phone to let her know I had made it to the airport.

It was a bit of a wait to get on the plane but once it started it went really fast.  I called Mom once I was seated on the plane & was pleased with how well the phone worked.  I even saw my luggage being loaded onto the plane, which made me feel good.  I knew it would at least make it on the first part of the journey.

There was a deep feeling of fear mixed with excitement once the plane started to move out.  I knew there was no turning back at that point.  I felt tears in my eyes but covered them with a yawn.

My stomach was doing a little dance when the plane started to move faster and faster down the runway then that little “hop” as the plane leaves the ground.

I was sitting next to two elderly women who were going to California.  They both had books so neither spoke very much the entire trip.

I was glad I had picked a window seat.  I can’t imagine sitting anywhere else.  I would have to be able to look out.  The clouds were just lovely.  They looked like castles, floating in the air.  We hit some rough patches but I wasn't afraid.  In fact, they were kind of fun.  Like a roller coaster.

It felt so strange to look down from so high and to think of all the people we were passing over.

My God, just to think how long it took those poor people in the covered wagons to go where it only took us a few hours.  It's really mind blowing.  I wonder if I would have the guts to set out on the same journey a hundred years ago.  Imagine knowing it would take months to get to SLC instead of hours.  I sure wouldn’t be going a whim to see a singer.  That’s for sure!

We were served a cookie & a drink. I had water.  I was surprised that it didn't cost anything.  I expected to have to pay through the nose for it.

I looked out the window for the most part but did manage to read a little myself.  I even fell asleep for about fifteen minutes.  I think I was just exhausted.

We landed in Denver on time.  I was disappointed because they had announced it was in the 30's & they had snow.  I so wanted to see it.  I think the people next to me thought I was nuts because I was bouncing up and down in my seat because I so excited.  Unfortunately, by the time we landed, it had turned to rain.  I guess it just isn't meant to be.  Sigh.

I asked the lady at the ticket counter what did you do with the snow and she said if I had only been an hour earlier, I would have seen it.  Missed out again!

I didn't have a long layover time.  I kinda wish I had time to look things over just a bit but by the time I found the gate, it was only about 15 minutes till take off.

I tried to call Mom a number of times.  She just can't seem to hear that phone.  I wish she would go to the hearing doctor.

We left Denver on the connecting flight.  I wasn’t as nervous this time but still felt my heart and stomach do a little leap when I felt the wheels leave the ground.  There was a very nice man with lovely blue eyes sitting next to me.  When I mentioned the MB concert, he said his wife was a big fan  & had wanted to come with him but couldn't get the time off from work.  What a shame!  I would have loved to have met her and maybe we could have had dinner or something.  But it was neat to find someone who knew who Michael Ball is!  We had a pleasant chat on the ride to SLC.

I thought I may have seen a tornado off in the distance as we were taking off but I’m not sure.  The man said it was steam from a power plant but it didn’t look like that to me.  It was going really far up into the sky and had a cone shape.  I could have been wrong but it did look strange.

We were served a bag of mini pretzels & again, I had water.

I can't describe my excitement when we flew over the continental divide.  I saw snow on the mountaintops!  I’ve never seen anything so lovely and couldn’t believe it was real!

We landed in SLC.  I had major problems with my bags.  I over packed big time.  At least I'm learning what I need & what I don't.

I found the free van to the hotel.  The driver was very nice.   I told him all about Michael Ball and the concert.  He didn’t know anything.  Poor man.  I’m sure he knows more than he ever cared to know now.

The city is so clean & really beautiful.  The mountains are something to see!  I wish I could have drove up to them.  Maybe it was a mistake not to get a rental car.  I’m sorry I won’t be able to go see the Salt Lake but after speaking with some of the locals that may not be so bad.  I was told it stinks to high heaven.

My room at the Best Western is very nice.  I have 2 double beds.  The room has an iron, a blow drier, a safe & a little coffeemaker.  The bathroom is HUGE!  I think I may have made a mistake by not staying at the BW in NYC.  I don't know how the Milford Plaza will compare.

I called Mom to let her know I was here and safe.  The phone worked GREAT!

I found out that Michael Ball is going to do a signing on Saturday at the local Boarders.   It was posted on the net.  I was lucky to see it, just before I had to sign off the computer before I left for the trip.  I looked it up in the phone book and found they are just down the street.  I took a walk down & bought a CD of MB to get myself a spot in VP line for Saturday.

I found I was in a mall so I walked around a bit.  I found a cyber café.  I tried to send e-mails from there but couldn't make the computer work.  The kid who was in the place didn’t know how to fix it so I wasn't charged.  It's 10 dollars an hour.  I did manage to get a message to Jose on BWW.  Silly I know but he seemed so interested in my trip, I just wanted him to know I made it ok.

I had some dinner while at the mall.  Bourbon chicken & veggies.  By then I was so tired, I walked back to the hotel.  I spotted the carriage ride, spoke with the person.  I'm gong back today to have a ride.

I started having a dull pain in my right side with pain also shooting down my right leg.  I hope that doesn’t mean what I think it does.  Of all times!  Please, Lord, not NOW.

I took a good, hot bubble bath, put my nightgown on and went to lay & watch TV in bed.  I was reading some brochures with my reading glasses on and after I went to sleep, I somehow managed to break my glasses in half.  I have to try to find a pair today.

Mom was right, I should have packed a spare pair of glasses and that’s one thing I will do on the trip to NYC.

I was asleep by six local time but I needed the rest.  I'm going back to bed in a moment.  All in all it was a very exciting day!

I had to laugh at the part of my notes in SLC when I said the bit about the hotel room.  I swear I didn't add that.  I just must have somehow known.

Danise: You may ask any questions you like.  All record producers do things differently.  Some don't have any hand in the arrangements or song choices, they're basically just around.  Some don't even bother going to the mix - without naming names, one record producer of cast albums doesn't attend his mixes - just lets the engineer do it.  I'm not like that.  I'm hands on from the day I say yes to an album till the day it ships to the stores - every aspect.  Certain vocalists I let alone until late in the game, then I hear what's going on and give my opinions.  Many albums I'm involved very heavily in the arrangements.   I work closely with the singers, very very closely on every aspect of the performance of every song.  Because Vinnie and I worked together on so many albums, he's able to get rough mixes up of everything, and I just finesse them with him.  I comp the vocals personally, no one else touches them.  On cast albums, I sit with the creative team and tell them what I think the routine of the album should be, we discuss it, come to a meeting of the minds, etc.  Again, it is my job to insure that the performances being given in the theater translate to CD, which is sometimes very tricky.

I watched the new Liza Minnelli episode of BIOGRAPHY tonight. There were some factual errors in the writing, and even Liza mistakenly said her special LIZA WITH A Z was the first one woman special in TV history. Um, has she forgotten MY NAME IS BARBRA?

Nothing in the two hour show that I didn't already know about her, but it was nostalgic watching her grow up via film and TV clips.

I remember a day of rides at Pacific Ocean Park and too many trips on the
Tilt-a-whirl.  I had to stop when I couldn’t walk straight after spinning so much.  That was a fun day.  Keith of course did not go on the spinning rides with me.  He has spent many hours over the years watching me on rides.  He goes on the ones that don’t spin, loop or twist.

We were a good team when the boys were little.  He would take them on rides that moved like swings (which make me sick) or on the Ferris Wheel.  Only once have I been on a Ferris Wheel, that was another time at Pacific Ocean Park.  I had this romantic ride in mind and hoped the ride, just like in the movies, would stop at the top where we would kiss.  Well, I got my wish alright but it wasn’t romantic in the sense I had imagined.  I practically hyperventilated and may have been close to tears.  Keith did hold me, but not as I had intended.  It was very humiliating. :D

Not to be confused with Le Schnozze di Figaro, where the famous barber faces his greatest challenge, shaving the upper lip of Cyrano de Bergerac.

It's...um...longer.

It has a better sense of humor about itself, more interesting villians and a fuller complement of heroes.  And I forget how many seasons it's been running, but the first six seasons are on DVD.  That's right, the first six seasons.  And a spin-off series starts in July.

Good Evening!

Well, I got some more cleaning done.  Of course, I could have done more - a lot more - but I'm taking my time, and I have the time to take so...  However, for some strange reason, in the middle of putting things away, I decided to cut my hair.  So, I got out my clippers and clipped away.  It looks pretty good.  And it feels sooo much cooler.

-Other than the haircut and some cleaning, I did make a trip to the grocery store for some supplies.  Otherwise, I've been watching TV all evening.  I caught glimpses of Reagan's funeral, and that was enough for me.  I'm in my post-show "depression" and I just couldn't take all the coverage from start to finish.

Unfortunately, one of the moments I caught was Nancy Reagan's final kiss of the coffin at the internment.  That whole moment was underscored by the practically deafening sound of camera shutters going off.  It was so sad to see such a private moment being so "publicized".

So...

It's been very rainy here in Richmond for the past couple of hours.  It's been a very mellow evening.

Goodnight.

I've been listening to William Finn's song cycle, Elegies, and I've noticed something rather peculiar.

Not in what I've been hearing, but in the reading that goes with the hearing, and well, with the hearing, too.

The disc, for those who haven't encountered it yet, consists of a series of songs, tributes to people Finn has known who are no longer with us, or with him.  The songs are sung by Christian Borle, Betty Buckley, Carolee Carmello, Keith Byron Kirk, and Michael Rupert, singularly and in groupings.  The singers are accompanied, quite well, by a solo pianist.

So I'm hearing this pianist, and I'm looking on the back cover, and the front cover, and all through the CD booklet, and there is no indication of who is playing the piano.

I find this strange.

I mean, I suppose they could have been accompanied by a player piano.  It's possible.  But then, I would have expected some credit given on the back of the cover, or somewhere in the booklet, to whoever it was who programmed the player piano.

Or at least to whoever it was who plugged in the player piano.

But nothing of the sort is to be found anywhere on the back cover.  Or the front cover.  Or anywhere in the booklet.

How sad.

And how sloppy.

We were supposed to head over to watch the grandlads play baseball (or T-ball, or whatever) today, but they were rained out.

We went and watched Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban instead.  We enjoyed.

I particularly enjoyed John Williams' score.  He follows the groundwork he laid in the earlier two films, but shifts gears significantly.  The Knight Bus sequence shows his jazz roots, and he has fun with clock sounds later in the film.  Good work.

Today I was sent a DVD, some Universal anime thirty minute thing called The Chronicles of Riddick: The Dark Fury.  Supposedly this show is meant to bridge the gap between the movie Pitch Black and its sequel The Chronicles of Riddick.  I find it peculiar that a thirty minute animated program (very much in the style of anime) is meant to bridge the gap between two live action features but I'm enjoying it because it looks and sounds very good.
