Well, you've read the notes, and now there is no time to tarry or dally nor dally or tarry, now it is time to post until the 80,000 cows come home.  Let's achieve our new plateau, shall we?

Happy Day to Michael Barnum

Wow, only 8 right now. A number I can manage. I have been so busy that I have not read posts since, I think, Tuesday. I did get to wish BK happy day, but otherwise I'm outta the loop. I'll catch up on Sunday.

Nuttin' in or on nuttin'

Gotta go. Bags to pack and gifts to prepare.

Happy birthday MBarnum .  I am currently listening to a  instrumental  CD called "A Celtic Christmas"  Trying to get into the spirit on this gray gray rainy  foggy miserable morning after slogging through the 30 mile commute with a bunch of trucks and SUVs and others monstrosities that make my Taurus wagon (the momoblile) look like like a tiny circus clown car.

In my DVD we have "West Side Story"  and "Into the Woods"  (we're raising the Vixter to be a Sondheimite ) and probably still that dang Barbie Princess & the Pauper DVD (The pauper is extremely well dressed and groomed for a pauper, and she has a barking cat...Mr. Samuel Clemens must be spinning in his grave .... (its a 5 disc DVD player, I think the other two slots are empty although Mr. David Hasselhoff in '"Jeykll & Hyde" may still be lurking there.

The  VCR is empty I think.

My Christmas birthday brother has been making noises about as TIVO, since we are generally several years behind the fancified electronics curve can anyone give me advice on said TIVO?

Are there different kinds like a VCR or is it just one brand? Can I afford it? Is it hard to install? Do you need to sign up for some special TIVO service? And why oh why is Bush's popularity still rising?  Where are these pollsters polling ? Kennebunkport?

Wonderful radio show last night.  How exciting to get my question answered on the radio!  And I got a question answered back.  The host - asked me - "Are you listening to us on the internet?"  I had told him I was from Indiana.  Well, I didn't know quite how to answer that, I thought of saying:  "No, I am getting you on shortwave through the fillings in my teeth - or some such....but I just said, 'Yes.'"

Happy Birthday to DRMBarnum!

Media report:  Like DRvixmom, I'm trying to listen myself into the Christmas spirit.  My car CD player alternates between A Broadway Christmas (produced by our very own BK, with some help from our very own elmore) and Merry Christmasby the New Christy Minstrels (NOT Christmas with the Christies, their second attempt at a holiday album, which is devoid of all the originality and unique NCM sound of the first.  Both are on the CD release and I always skip the second.  The first contains one of my favorite holiday songs, "Sing Hosannah, Hallelujah!")

I haven't been home enough this week to know what's in the DVD player, but I'll have it all to myself this weekend.  Now, what should I watch?

I had not heard of this CD.  Is it generally available or must I seek it out via the net? Actually, looking out my window, I decided to try the web first!! Too yucky out there.

Any TIVO advice y'all?

Things I am learning from Interrupted Journey on TCM.

There are NO fat opera singers.

All men who come to see the opera are straight and fall in love with the singers.

Eleanor Parker is beautiful - but is least sexy when she tries to be sexy.

DRvixmom - I had found both A Broadway Christmas and A Broadway Valentine in the library where I work, but was able to order them from amazon.com earlier this fall.

BK also recorded a CD called "A Hollywood Christmas."  It has "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," with two reprises of it!

In my CD player at work (when I get there):  last night's radio interview with our very own BK!  I had to break it up into sections, so songs are missing (let me clarify...I stopped the recording so that I wouldn't have just one big giant 2 gigabyte file and I chose to stop when they played songs that I own, so that I can just add them back in from my CDs.  Make sense?).  Actually, I almost lost two chunks of the entire show (one with the What If? stuff!! :o) but FORTUNATELY my computer didn't crash.  Whew!

In my VCR:  last night's "The Apprentice" and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" (since I was taping BK's interview)

In my DVD player:  something yet to be chosen.  Maybe the 3rd Harry Potter movie.  I never got to see this at a movie theater.

You're close enough that you could actually drop by for some of the chocolate cake I promised BK a few days ago!  Any excuse for Betsy to make it is OK in my book.  :)

Media:  Like Vixmom, I'm currently listening to a Celtic compilation CD that Betsy gave me for Channukah.  I love Celtic music on gray, stormy days--don't know why.  I, like BK, have spent a lot of the last week listening to Mutiny on the Bounty, one of my all-time favorite scores.  I have also been listening to the latest batch of Percy Faith reissues--it turns out the bonus tracks on I Think I Love You are not just single versions of album tracks, they're all non-album single releases, so they are quite rare.  One of them, Anytime of the Year, sounds so familiar to me (it starts with the female chorus singing "I can hear the music...").  Was it theme music for the old Beautiful Music format that used to dominate MOR radio back in the early 70s?  Does anyone else remember this tune?

DVD:  I had been watching (listening to?) the commentary on Powell and Pressburger's I Know Where I'm Going, but then Betsy gave me a MST3K DVD last night, so we opted for that.

Media Report:

Books: Finished The DaVinci Code.  Yeah, I can see Tom Hanks in the male lead.

DVD Player: Nothing, really.

CD Player: Monday was very busy in the car, of course.  On the way north from Rehoboth Beach to NYC (once we got off the ferry), we listened to the OCR of Bells Are Ringing (I think I prefer BK's recording on the whole, but he didn't get to record with Judy Holiday ever, drat), followed by the OCR of Bounce (still as disappointing as when we saw it a year ago in DC).  Then we turned on the radio for traffic broadcasts.

On the way back, we first listened to the new Christmas CD Elmore burned for several of us, and enjoyed it very much.  This was followed by Lucky Me (the BK cast recording), and then a Greatest Hits collection from the Mamas and the Papas.  We got a start on Stephen Schwartz' Reluctant Pilgrim, and then we were home again!

Time for me to pretend I'm the Food Channel again, because last night's Chicken Chile Verde was nummy!

Start with 1/2 pound boneless chicken (I used thigh meat), cut into thin strips.  Heat a couple T veg oil over high heat in a frying pan, add the chicken, stirring, until the chicken has just turned golden, about 90 second.

Turn the heat down to medium, sprinkle the bird with 1 1/2 t ground cumin and 2 T yellow cornmeal, and cook, still stirring, for another minute, toasting the spices a little.  Add 2 cups chopped scallions (that's about 2 bunches), and keep stirring for another 30 seconds.  Then add a can of chicken broth (or two-cups if you've made your own) and a 4-oz. can of chopped green chiles, and let the mixture simmer for five minutes or so, until it's thickened a little.  Garnish with some chopped cilantro and serve.

Ah, what to serve it with?  Rice would do, as would egg noodles.  I made some grits, to which I added chopped olives and pickled jalapenos, which made a mighty tasty combination.

And I can't see why this wouldn't work with pork loin instead of chicken.

And, on a grumpier note, is there anyone else out there who gets asked to do the Christmas shopping for relatives who are "too busy"?

Last year, der Brucer's family was constantly asking us to dash all over Delaware to find the gifts they couldn't (or wouldn't) travel to get themselves.  This year, it's happening again, twice so far as the son-in-law has asked der B to find something for the son-in-law's wife (der B'd daughter) without really knowing what it is the wife was requesting (which doesn't exist in any case), and the daughter has asked for a clothing purchase for the grandlads (which der B is afraid is already sold out, in any case).

Bleh.

Meanwhile, does anyone remember DR Charles Pogue writing earlier this week about seeing the stage adaptation of His Dark Materials while in London?

Well, a film version of the trilogy is being made, and according to an article in the London Times (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1393306,00.html), said film version has hit a major snag.

Quote
Chris Weitz, the director, has horrified fans by announcing that references to the church are likely to be banished in his film. Meanwhile the “Authority”, the weak God figure, will become “any arbitrary establishment that curtails the freedom of the individual”.

The studio wants alterations because of fears of a backlash from the Christian Right in the United States.

And, because of this, the article further states, they've shelved a script by Tom Stoppard!  Yipes!

Anyone read the books yet?  They sound interesting to me.  (I should have picked up the playscript while we were at the Drama Book Store in NYC, but the original books should be pretty good from what I hear.)

EEEE, I am vexed!  I had every intention of listening to BK amuse us on radio last night, but took a little nap at seven and didn't get up till eleven fifteen that night.  But the rest was good; it along with the best cold remedy substance around, Lemsip, has pretty much chased this cold off that has been dogging me the last few days.

Happy B'day, MBarnum!

In the CD:  some CDs I got at the Dress Circle in London:

RON RAINES: So In Love with Broadway

CLIVE ROWE: Live at the Donmar

RAY NOBLE and His Orchestra:  The Touch of Your Lips featuring Al Bowlly as vocalist.

I also acquired a Derek & Clive album with Peter Cook & Dudley Moore.  It is not the original one, but it is very intermittently funny.  So of it is gut-bustingly funny, other bits just miss or go on too long. It sounds like both of them are totally pissed and just riffiing off the top of their heads through most of it.

S. Woody, I'm sure you mean Lucky Stiff, not Lucky Me.  Lucky Me is a song by Benjamin Kritzer.  If you make this sort of mistake too often I think you know that der Brucer will be merciless about it and go on and on and on about it. :-)

S. Woody, I'm sure you mean Lucky Stiff, not Lucky Me.  Lucky Me is a song by Benjamin Kritzer.  If you make this sort of mistake too often I think you know that der Brucer will be merciless about it and go on and on and on about it. :-)
Oops, we're both wrong.  Let's try LITTLE Me.  (Which is still a damn good recording, btw.)

Hmmm, re: SWW's question about being asked to shop for relatives - the answer is yes.

Mostly I like it though.  I bought all the Christmas gifts for my sister's niece and nephew cause they have no stores up north.

I picked all my own holiday gifts and everyone is buying them off my mom.

I went with my uncle to buy some of his gifts.  And I got a gift for my aunt to give (although it's quite hard for her to shop a lot).

I'm sure when my aunt gives my mom the list for my uncle that I will have to go around town buying stuff to give from my sis.

Hmmm, tomorrow night is my dad's 60th birthday party.  Since his brother's family is driving from out of town, I'm hoping the snow that is forecast will not be too bad. :(

I wish to thank Pogue for bringing us all to London with him and the LW--vicariously, that is.

And catching up on Brando, I haven't been a huge fan, and I haven't seen lots of his major performances.  However Streetcar is one film I absolutely love, his performance in particular.

A guilty pleasure, I suppose, is the remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau, which we caught on cable a few months ago.  With Ron Perlman as the First Speaker, Fairuza Balk as Aisa, Val Kilmer as Montgomery, Brando has all he can do to out-ham the rest of the cast.  In particular, Kilmer seems to be in a contest with him for Quirkiest Performance from an Actor.  Brando camps it up delightfully, even in the death-of-Quilty-ripoff scene where he plays the piano for the attacking animals.

And then there was the Lucy episode in Hollywood when she had a cake for Ricky reading, "To My Darlin', Another Marlon".  "Marlon who?" asked Fred.  "Brando, of course," she replies.  "Oh.  I thought you meant Monroe."

The problems we're having with doing other people's shopping for them is that they either aren't really happy with what we find, and grouse later, or we call them to tell them what we've found and their response is "I've got to think about it," which means that what they want will be gone by the time they've decided.  It would be great if they'd trust our judgement, but they don't.

Phooey.  (That's Yeoohp, for those who like their words backwards.)

Things I am learning from Interrupted Journey on TCM.

There are NO fat opera singers.

All men who come to see the opera are straight and fall in love with the singers.

Eleanor Parker is beautiful - but is least sexy when she tries to be sexy.

Is it worth watching?  It just happened to be recording when I was checking the TIVO in our bedroom in the hopes it had recorded the Betty Hutton interview.  She is on my wish list in there.  I got three movies but not the interview.  Last night we watched ANNIE GET YOUR GUN.  I don't believe I had ever seen it, even when I was very young.

Yes, DRJANE, I would definitely recommend it, specifically for the music.  There are some nice opera performances, and Eleanor is indeed one of the overlooked screen beauties of the fifties...overlooked by some, that is.

And I will send you a tape of the interview if you like.

Mention of LUCKY ME earlier reminded me of the (mediocre) 1954 Doris Day musical by that name. Some references cite it as the first Cinemascope musical. (THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT III says the remake of ROSE MARIE was the first one. I suspect it was MGM's first but not the first in history.) Anyone know for sure?

How's this for some news:  According to Playbill.com, Nicole Kidman Withdraws from "Producers" Film (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/90053.html)!  A quote:  "Variety reports that Kidman's representatives said the actress felt she would not have enough time to rehearse the movie musical before she heads off to her next movie "Eucalyptus."

Do you think that they would consider Tony-winner-for-the-part Cady Huffman or would they try to get another "name?"

How did Eleanor escape the indignity of movies like TROG?

I am suddenly reminded of an ABC Movie of the Week that starred Eleanor Parker--Home for the Holidays, a sort of Psycho/Halloween flick, set at Christmas time.  It also starred Sally Field, Julie Harris, Walter Brennen, Jessica Walters and Jill Haworth.  There was a very nice Christmassy waltz as part of the score that I liked a lot.

But it matters not.  I'm afraid that despite the gloomy prospects over the next four years, I cannot help it if my inner joy has taken over.

We may not be getting for Christmas what we hoped for, but it makes me feel like singing:

I know the Depression’s depressing
The carols are stilled, the stores aren’t filled

And windows are minus their dressing
The children don’t grin, the Santas are thin

And I’ve heard a terrible rumor
No good will, no cheer

But we’ll get a New Deal for Christmas this year

The snowflakes are frightened of falling
And oh, what a fix, no peppermint sticks

And all through the land folks are bawling
And filled with despair, ’cause cupboards are bare

But Santa’s got brand new assistants
There’s nothing to fear
They’re bringing a New Deal for Christmas this year

On Farley and Perkins
On Ickes and Wallace
On Morgenthau and Cummings
Fill our pockets with dollars

On Roper and Swanson
Get along Cordell Hull

Get along, giddy up
Call your committee up
Build every city up
Cheer every kiddie up

Fill every stocking with laughter
We haven’t got room for any more gloom

Let’s ring every bell from its rafter
And chime ’cross the land
Tomorrow’s at hand

Those happy days that we were promised are finally here
We’re getting a New Deal for Christmas this year

DRRLP, you are insane!

DR elmore,

Some of us, longtime posters here, have known that for a long time now! :D

We didn't dare to "warn" you,  knowing you'd find out sooner or later!

I'm just wondering what Miss Vickie has to put up with!!! ;)

MBarnum GOOD CAMERA VIBES!

I hope you never shut the dryer door without checking it very carefully.  I have heard horror stories, and there was the time our cat jumped into the frig and I didn't notice.  Don't worry I opened the frig a minute or two later when I couldn't find him.

I have had that happen with Freddy going into the fridge many times!! LOL! He doesn't do it as much as he used to but I always make sure he is NOT in there now before I shut the door!

80.000 posts!

Congrats to one and all!    :) ;D :)

Bad news on the SUV.  It was just not to be.  The motor was very clean--on top but you could see the oil running down the motor.  When I started and drove it just a couple of blocks, you could smell the oil (not to mention the tell tail oil cloud--oy) burning and though it was pretty nice to drive, I just wasn't going to take it.  The guy said he was willing to take a much small amount for it but that made me want it even less.

Sigh.

I would also like a copy of last nights radio show but I like it even more if someone could explain how to save radio shows to my hard drive.  Is it a special computer program?

Not much else to say tonight.  I get to see POTO tomorrow.
I will enjoy that very much and am looking forward to it.

Yes DRDANISE - it is the same POTO company I saw, and enjoyed it....except for Carlotta....

And the souvenir book is BLACK....all the other ones I have are white...but this one has a black cover.

Have fun!  I just don't remember any other Phantom crawling around on the floor as much as this one does.

MBarnum have you figured out your camera yet?  Be sure to take it with you tonight and post your celebration pics tomorrow.  Have a good time.

Is Freddy after food like my cat was?  LOL-my cat never did that again.  Maybe you don’t leave Freddy in long enough.  That cat was also exceptionally smart, opened door and cupboards and found all sorts of clever ways to get into food, until he got too fat.  He even use to try to steal food out of our mouths and bit Craig’s tongue once. ;D

Crawling around on the floor?  Ok.  Sounds-----interesting.  I shall have to watch for it.  Just please tell me he doesn't sing the Phantoms song at least 3  octaves to high!   I'll never forget that first Phantom for that (or forgive him either!)

Thanks Jane, put it was really a win/win situation.  I was either going to have the SUV or I was going to be able to pay some bills off that I originally planned on doing before this "deal" came about.   :D

Sorry about the SUV, Danise! :(

As for the radio show, you can't "save" it to your hard drive or download it.  It's streaming audio, which means that it's being broadcast live and you just pick it up through your computer like a regular radio broadcast.  What happens is that I have a program that's kind of like a tape recorder and it records what is played over the Internet.  It creates a big giant .wav computer file and after it's recorded, I have to manually edit it.  With last night's three-hour show, I had seven different files that added up to almost 2 Gigabyes in size!  I still have to chop them up even more to make individual tracks on the final CDs.

DR Danise - I for one am relieved you didn't get the Explorer. They're not very good cars and they're downright dangerous. And gas guzzlers. And they don't brake well. Remember a few years ago when they were being recalled left and right? I was going to post something yesterday, but you seemed to want it so much, I thought I would stay out of it. You're a grown-up, you know what you're doing. I had an Explorer for years and I couldn't stand it. I was married and living in LA when we first got it, then was stuck with it in Boulder after I was divorced. It was leased and I counted the days until the lease was up. In fact, I gave it up a few months early just to be rid of it. Yuck.
If any DRs have Explorers, the editorail comment is mine and mine alone. May I repeat - Explorer - Yuck! IMHO.

Thanks, Panni, I respect your opinion.  SUV’s aren’t for everyone.

I like a big vehicle.  If you guys could see the thing I’m driving right now, you would get a real chuckle.  I don’t call it the “A-team” van lightly.

It’s a 1985 Ford Econoline cargo van.  It’s perfect for the dogs and
for moving things around but I wanted something a little less---attention getting for when I go to off site meetings at work.

An example was just the other day when I had Jury Duty.  When I went to pull in to the parking garage, the guy on duty asked me if I had ever parked in that garage before because he wasn't sure it would fit.  It did scape the top a few times but was ok.  Barely.

The problem is that I'm so used to driving high with the van and riding the bus that I don’t honestly think I could go back to a car.  I feel very nervous when I’m in one.  It feels like I’m skimming the ground.   :)

                 SUGGESTIONS REQUESTED

There is not a site on the Internet which has a nicer bunch of people who also happen to know a LOT about movies. With that in mind, DRs, I would like suggestions for films to see which take place around 1774-75-76. I'm writing an opus which takes place around those years in Williamsburg and I'm curious to see how other screenwriters handled the language. I would think it has to be a bit of a cheat - suggesting how they spoke in Colonial days, but not exactly replicating it.
(BTW - I've already asked one person who shall remain nameless
- bk - Oops did I say that? - and his answer was "I don't believe they were making movies back then." ...So don't try answering that way!)

DRPanni,  perhaps these would help as well, not necessarily 1774-76, but mid-18th Century:
DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK
THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS
TOM JONES (Albert Finney)
REVOLUTION (Al Pacino)
THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE (Kirk Douglas/Burt Lancaster)
THE CROSSING (Jeff Daniels?)
THE CLANDESTINE MARRIAGE (David Garrick play)
THE BEGGAR'S OPERA (Roger Daltry)

Panni:  In 1774, the colonies, being part of England, were peopled with British subjects.

Some, of course, had been here since the 1500s and 1600s, and all weren't exactly stiff-upper-lippers, but I think that, for the most part, there was a British lilt to most English that was spoken, except when it was spoken by the French.

"The Madness of King George" ought to be a nice place to start for how the British spoke (or not???) so far as we can surmise.

I don't think the colonists sounded like Henry Fonda in "Drums Along the Mohawk," and I'm danged sure they didn't sound like Al Pacino in "Revolution".  And forgive me, but...none of them surely spoke like Fess Parker in "Davy Crockett," mountain man though he may have been.

As someone else suggested, "1776" is as good a place to visit and study as any...especially for the manner of speaking and the syntax.  Much of the book was taken from actual letters written by Adams and Jefferson and Franklin, IIRC.

There had to be some "colonial" variation on the King's English.  Whether anyone is conversant with it in terms of what it sounded like or not, I have no idea.

Of course, if your story happens to dip into the south, there are other "influences" that come into play....again, study "1776."  I remember reading somewhere that Vivien Leigh had little trouble at all picking up the southern accent of Scarlet O'Hara because it was "very close" to being the same English she spoke.  It's a matter of the way one treats vowels, isn't it!

Sorry, but the French did not speak English there and then! No way!

Actually, for many years, many people in Louisiane spoke first and foremost French and were outraged when they were forced to learn and speak English!

They were told they would NOT be considered Americans if they did not speak English, while they were born in the States in the first place!

Following info found:

http://www.breauxbridgelive.com/cajunhistory.html

While the Acadians remained the major population in South Louisiana for quite some time, they quickly found themselves surrounded by more and more cultural influences. Eventually, Spanish, French, German, and Native American Indian elements blended with the Acadian culture to form what is now known as Cajun (Cadien) culture. The French language remained the dominant language in South Louisiana until the early 20th century, when a state mandate forbade the speaking of French on the school grounds. Two generations of Cajuns were punished and made to feel ashamed for speaking French. Subsequently, the language (which is at the heart of the culture) nearly died. In 1968, the CODOFIL (Council for the Development of French in Louisiana) was formed and the tide began to turn. A renaissance of the French language was spurred by French immersion programs throughout South Louisiana. Today, thanks to the efforts of groups like CODOFIL, ACTION CADIENNE, the Cajun Music Association, L'ACadjin and others, the Cajun culture and French language is experiencing new prosperity.Vivre le français et vivre les cadiens!

I will try to post a picture or two of Anthony's latest project (the one that kept him from attending BK's stellar reading on Monday), his miniature school room for students with special needs. He's got some great shots. Those of you who have seen his other work know whereof I speak.

Was Ricky Martin in your bowl of menudo?

Ricky M. being such a dish himself, he can't be in a bowl! :)

Just used elmore's birthday card for Barnes and Noble and got the new Ken Bloom Broadway Musicals book, which I was leery of, oh, yes, I was leery, but which does indeed have some of the most breathtaking color photos of classic Broadway shows that I've ever seen.  It puts Steve Suskin's rather skimpy poster book to shame (also, it seems odd that Mr. Suskin takes a "by Steve Suskin" credit, since it's a book of posters with four-line commentaries about same).  I also got the huge new book, The Complete Cartoons of the New Yorker.

"The Full Report" is OK in the "Daily Discussions" but the Column is not to be found in the Archives. Very odd.

I've written Mr. Mark Bakalor about the missing notes - we'll see if he can fix it.  Maybe it has something to do with when I was posting the notes early, but none of the other columns I posted early seems to be affected.

Jrand,

I believe Danise was referring to a Phantom she saw and heard in a previous production some time ago, not the current one touring Florida!

Good Evening! -Again...

Where to begin?  Where to begin?....

MEDIA CHECK -

Only my CD player has been in use this week:
Janis Siegel - "Sketches of Broadway"
"A Broadway Christmas"
"Holiday in Plaid"

And I'm currently listening to Beverly Cosham's new CD.  And who is Bev Cosham, you may ask?  Well, she's a Washington, DC based singer and actress, and she just released a new CD featuring the lyrics of Yip Harburg.  Quite a nice selection of tunes, well-known and not so well known.  The arrangements on the CD were done by my frequent pit-mate, George Hummel, who's also a very fine reed player.  The charts range from a basic jazz sextet, to other ones featuring some strings, woodwinds, etc.  Very nice arrangements, and Bev is using more of her upper range on this album than I'm used used to hearing.  Very neat.  She has a very neat voice - I'd say it's sort of jazzy-operatic - a big voice, with a great smoky tone to it.  She's a frequent guest artist for some of those composer and lyricist tribute concerts that the Smithsonian does every now and then.

For any interested DRs, you can check out sound clips - and order a copy for yourself or your loved ones - yes, the holidays are upon us ;) - at:

http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/cosham (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/cosham)

-And, yes, she's a friend of mine too!  Actually, she was responsible for my New York City cabaret debut a couple of years ago - hmmm, it has been a few - at the sadly now-closed Eighty-Eights in The Village.  We did two weekends up there, and had a blast.

THANK YOU to all of you for all your Well-Wishes and Good Vibes for my father.

When I got into tonight after the show, he happened to be trying out the new karaoke system he just bought...  Which, I guess, is a good thing...

;)

As for myself... My family is pretty hearty stock.  Myself, I've never broken a bone in my body, nor had an overnight hospital stay.  I still have my tonsils, I still have my wisdom teeth, and I still have my appendix.  -One of my brothers had an appendectomy a few years ago.  Yes, I've had some health issues over the years - like this past spring - but nothing ever that serious, so...

I'm just trying my best to be optimistic and not to worry about anything I shouldn't be worrying about right now.  I have a tendency work out the worst possible scenarios in my head... And with the usual stress of a tech week to deal with this week as well... I'm doing OK.  If anything, I've just been a bit too tired to deal with "it" - or at least to think about it too much.

But, like I said, my father was "singing" earlier tonight...-He's not too bad, but he was consistently behind the beat - but consistent in that regard.  It made for some intereting stresses with the accompaniment tracks out of sync by a beat or two.

We just all have to see how Monday goes and take it from there...

But, again, Thank You to all of you.

Vibes Help.

:)

I believe William Gibson made a play out of the letters of Abigail and John Adams.  Another musical set around that time is Ben Franklin In Paris.  I seem to recall that one of the writers involved with that also did another Revolutionary war era piece.

Alan Bennett's fine play, I believe, was called The Madness of King George III.  When it was filmed, studio execs dropped the III, worried that the public would think it a second sequel.

And what years does Amadeus depict?  The play script is far better than the screenplay

....OH, and it looks like New York is official for me somehow or another come this spring... I gave my notice to my roommate when I got back to Richmond last night...  -Let me explain...

After last night's run-through - which went very well - I decided to go ahead and head back to Richmond.  It wasn't too rainy, and we were done with rehearsal right before 11:00pm - not too later, at least for me.  I made it back to my apartment in Richmond by 12:45.  -I also wanted to pick up some more stuff since I probably won't be heading back this Monday.  -And I needed to bring up my keyboard pedals since the ones at the theatre all have "issues".

When I was walking up the sidewalk, my roomie was outside on the front porch smoking a cigarette - at least he smokes outside - and talking on his cell.  -And that's when I noticed some lights in the window - he had started setting up the Christmas decorations.  Well...

First of all, my roomie's Christmas decorations are just plain ugly.  Even he knows that a bunch of them are just plain tacky and should be thrown out.  -Come on, some of them are made of popsicle sticks and glitter - and they were made just five years ago.. BY HIM!?!?!?!?

Secondly, I had been asking to him to clean up around the apartment.  Nothing major, just the usual dusting and vaccuming, since I seem to get stuck with the cleaning (which I sort of don't mind).  Well, I was hoping he had at least done some cleaning before setting up the Christmas decorations so he wasn't just covering up the dust with greenery and ribbons.  No such luck.

Thirdly, when I walked into the kitchen, I noticed some burned stuff in the garbage can, and I smelled something burned in the air.  I thought it was just microwave popcorn since our microwave has a hot spot in it, and we both end up scorching our popcorn quite regularly.  Well... After looking around the kitchen a bit more, I noticed something else missing...  Then I headed back to the living room...

"Where's the toaster oven?"

-Oh, I left some potatoes in there, and forgot about them... They started burning... So, I threw them out."

"Yeah, I saw the stuff in the trash can.  But where's the toaster oven?"

-Oh, I threw is away.

"But it was MY toaster oven.  My NEW toaster oven."

That's when I just went ahead and removed myself from the situation.  I could just tell he was not going to tell about the whole mess, hoping I wouldn't notice.  Needless to say, I was livid.

I went ahead and made some microwave popcorn - I needed something to eat anyway - and I didn't burn it.  I sat in my bedroom going through my mail from the week.  Then I took my checkbook out, and wrote him out the check for the month's rent... minus the cost of the utilities AND the toaster oven!

I walked back into the living room, gave him the check...

"Here's the rent.  Sorry, it's been a busy week for me, I just never had a chance to get to the post office this week.  By the way, I've booked an off-Broadway show in March, so I'll be out of here March 1."

-OK... Cool

Then I headed back to my bedroom... Went through the rest of my mail, and got ready for bed - I had to be up in five hours anyway to head back up to DC for this afternoon's rehearsal.  I was still mad.  It took me a good chunk of time to calm down.  Thankfully, the classical station was playing some particularly soothing music last night.

I got up this morning, showered, packed my stuff up, and headed back up to DC.  And I took my good iron, my portable CD player and some other stuff with me that I don't want my roomie burning up.  And on the drive back up, I started planning how to make the best use of my next couple of Mondays back in Richmond... Pack this up.  Pack that up.  Get the storage place set up...

At least I'll be out of that apartment March 1.  I do have a gig in Greensboro the first week of March, and then I go right up to NYC for PennyO's show.  But before that, I have two weeks off after HALLELUJAH, BABY! closes to get things in order, packed up and moved on.

-Well, I need to stop this thread.. I'm starting to get worked up again... And a little sad...

-And I'm really tired right now too.. so...

However... I have had a few wonderful bright spots this week, despite the gray, rainy weather, the tech rehearsals, and my roomie...

On the way out of rehearsal the other afternoon, I ran into Sue White.  Sue was my Stage Manager for South Pacific at Arena Stage two seasons ago.  Such a wonderful person, very positive, encouragin, funny, and one helluva a stage manager too - one of those people one step ahead of everyone else.  Well, she was supposed to come back last season to do Camelot, but she was a no-show on the first day of rehearsal.  A week into rehearsals, they finally told some of us why she wasn't back with us: she had developed ovarian cancer, and was starting treatments.  Needless to say, that was very sobering news.

A week or two later, Sue dropped into rehearsals - with four dozen Krispy Kremes in hand!  Yes, a little tired and weary from the treatments, but still in good spirits.  Hugs all around.  And she talked with me for a bit, and explained her whole situation with a good sense of reality and humor.  Made me feel a lot better.

So when I ran into her the other day, she really picked my spirits up, made my heart happy.  It turns out, she's back working on the next show.  She'll just be the assistant stage manager, so just in case she gets a bit tired, she'll have the leeway to take some time off.

She's had more chemo, and her hair has started to fall out - she was wearing her South Pacific cap.  -She greeted me with, "Hey, your hair is longer than mine now!"  ;)  But, thankfully, she's had no real adverse side affects to the chemo.  Good drugs, and good spirit.

It'll be very nice having her in the building again.

:)

And hearing my father trying out the new karaoke system was also a bright spot tonight...

And hearing my nephew going through the songbook, and finding new songs to sing... He really liked singing, "Happy Birthday"... over and over again...  Then it was onto "Twinkle, Twinkle"... then his father told him it was time to go home.  They'll be back tomorrow.

And when I walked in, I leaned over to John, and said, "Hey, John.. come over..."  then he jumped up into my arms, gave me a big hug and nice peck on the cheek.

"Wot a sweet affectionate child it is..."

Then my niece, Alyssa, gave me her trademark apprehensive greeting - but she was also a little sick tonight, so that was OK.

And when I went to say Goodnight to my niece, Alexandra, she also gave me a nice hug and a kiss..

...And after this long week of rehearsals - and after last night's incident with my roomie - that was all I needed to feel good again.

Oh...  A correction to my Media Report:

"Holiday in Plaid" rather than "Plaid Tidings" - But basically the same thing.

And one addition as of an hour ago:

Stephen Scwhartz - "Uncharted Territory".   I've had this for a few years, and I've never listened to it- it just got buried somewhere in my many piles of yet-to-be-listened-to CDs.  Well, after DRs DerB and SWW mentioned it earlier today in their post - well, one of their posts - I decided, hm... And I happened to bring it up with me from Richmond.

*That's also part of the "plan" for the next couple of weeks.  I'm going to bring up a handfull of CDs and a few DVDs to listen to and watch during the week.  Hopefully, I'll make some good progress through the "yet-to-be-listened" and "yet-to-be-watched" lists.

And, yes, DR MBarnum, the Bollywood movie you sent me is first on the list of DVDs!

;)

Mr. Laurents - or "Artie" as the band has come to call him ;) - is surprisingly spry and "happy".

The Baltimore Sun did an interview with him earlier this week.  It might be available on-line...  I'll check later... But
before I get locked out of this topic/day..
