Dear DR WEL: Did the showings of Aladdin and Evening Primrose include the commercials from the original broadcasts, or were they edited out?

I remember seeing a kinescope of the original Cinderella with Julie Andrews a few years ago, and the commercials were included.  They were a hoot, and somehow lent a completeness to the evening.

A few hours ago, a woman.... this woman

enters the lobby of "my" hotel and asks for a pack of cigarettes!
We don't sell cigarettes and I directed her to Les Deux Magots on Boulevard St Germain, closeby!

I was quite thrilled to be briefly talking to Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of Jane Birkin, I mentioned the other day....

We will not be dining on Beef Wellington in our house tonight.  (I am seriously low on black truffles for the sauce.)

Instead, der Brucer wants me to go German for him.  Dinner tonight will be pork chops, red cabbage with apples, and potato pancakes.

I haven't made red cabbage with apples or potato pancakes for ages.

My major rant about English grammar is that too many people in the media don't know jack, and I constantly hear incorrect usage of the objective case in screenwriting, interviews, books, etc., such as "gave it to my wife and I," which infuriate me to no end.  We're raising a generation of illiterates, and even the editors behind the writers are morons.  END OF RANT!

Boy, that's the truth. You hear and read misused English grammar constantly. As a thirty-year teacher of English, it is VERY disheartening to hear and read so many, errors.

Current major bug: the commercials for ABC's new dramedy DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES which features one woman apologizing to her husband for shooting him saying, "Yes, I feel badly about that." I just want to jerk her by the hair and say that you don't use adverbs to modify linking verbs. You use adjectives.

I've posted an info request at another website, one dedicated to food and dining.  Hopefully we'll get a response SOON.

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from Norfolk.  Yes, I decided to splurge on the hotel.  Actually, the room rate I got is very reasonable, so it's only a little splurge.  -And since I ended up playing an extra show last night...  And the room rate is cheaper than my per show rate! So... -There's always a way to rationalize... :D

The main reason I'm staying here is that we're in one of those rain and thunderstorm patterns today.  The drive down got quite rainy as I neared Norfolk.  Coming out of of the tunnel the rain was coming down in buckets, so much so that everyone started slowing down since it was difficult to see the road.  They're predicting more storms for tonight, and I'm just not in the mood to deal with them on the way back... at night.

The matinee went well.  I still had a few nervous moments - "Oops, that page is in the wrong order..." - but the show started feeling "normal" this afternoon.  The main conductor was on the podium today - the assistant was on last night - and he had no comments for me after the show.  However, he seemed a little too comfortable with me playing the show.  -Which I guess is a compliment, but there were some cues which seemed to be "understood", or just signaled with a change of facial expression.

Well, time for me to get some dinner...  Be back after the show....

Laters...

Finances:  I'm kind of like the Thurber cartoon in which the lady says "How can I be overdrawn?  I have all these checks left!"

I've known this quote for quite a few years, but I could never remember where I first heard it, and of course, never knew who actually wrote it.  Now I know!

HainesHisWay...it's educational, too! ;D

I would love to be able to speak Old English. In fact, I'd better figure out how to by Tuesday for the first midterm exam. (Is it common practice for one class to have more than one midterm exam? This one is new to me.)

I just spoke to our DR PennyO, who sends her love to all.  She's been evicted from her sublet after only 3 days for having the nerve to complain to the old crone who rented it to her about the lack of electricity, phone, etc.  She's currently staying with the family of her voice teacher on 72nd Street, and I suggested she check Craigslist.com for some sublets.

The old bag who screwed her sublet plans on keeping the $1200 for the first month's rent, but she told Penny that she'd give back her deposit, which I think was more than the month's rent.  I told Penny to hit Small Claims court on Monday and sue her for the deposit and half of the $1200 since she'd been evicted after three days for complaining about things the apartment should have had working.

I took three years of typing in high school (wow...I graduated 20 years ago in 1984!) and was taught two spaces after a period.  Now "they" say one.  Too damn bad.  I'm typing two spaces.  And if "they" don't like it, they can lump it! :P So there! ;D

As for the official Topic of the Day:  There are a lot of topics that I don't know much about, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I want to become well-versed in them.  Several that I would sort of like to become well-versed in...at least, learn more about...are grammar (yes, grammar), history and music theory.  But if I had to choose just one, I'd pick computers.  Mainly, I'd love to be able to know what I do to my computer to screw it up so that I could prevent it in the future.  I'd also love to be able to know how to fix things, especially when I screw things up.

Handy Man is here and exterior house lights will now work properly on the timer.  Pool lights will have to wait for a week or two until the owner is back in town - at that time Handy Man will come back and deal with that and then voila - all will be fine and dandy and also dandy and fine.

Evening all!

I’m typing this from the new chair.  Now that I have it, I’m not so sure I want it.  It felt comfortable in the store but now that I have it home, I’m not so sure.

I want to wish DR Jane and very safe and happy trip!  Please let us know when you have arrived.

I hope the MRI went ok for you, DR Elmore!

As for the Topic of the day.  Gee, do we have enough time and space for me to list everything I wish I could do?  I want to read music.  I want to play piano or any instrument.  I want to learn how to sing properly.  I want to speak another language.  I want to learn more about computers.  I want to learn to cook wonderful meals.  I want to learn how to knit, crochet and sew.  I want to look at the stars and be able to name them.

I know there’s much, much more but I think that’s at least a good start.

I also want to put 2 spaces after my period.  Period.

Bruce and JRand-feel better.

Elmore I’m glad the MRI went well.  How nice the test was earlier than expected, and they called you. :)

I’m speed reading, and I’m sure missing many interesting posts, but I must pack now.  I probably should pay attention to the punctuation & grammar complaints.  I hope I haven’t offended anyone.   ;D

George, I just saw yours-definitely two spaces after a period.

Thank you Danise and I hope your find the right adjustment for your chair.

I’m off to pack.  This might be it for the night.
