Well, you've read the notes, you know the best is yet to come and is simply awaiting your excellent vibes and xylophones, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, and babe won't it be fine when they do?

Favourite Cary Grant movies:

GUNGA DIN
PENNY SERENADE (He should've won an Academy Award)
HOLIDAY
PHILADELPHIA STORY
THE AWFUL TRUTH
NOTORIOUS

I confess I have never seen NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

FAVOURITE SOPHIA LOREN MOVIES:

HOUSEBOAT
IT STARTED IN NAPLES
EL CID
I remember being intrigued by HELLER IN PINK TIGHTS &DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS but it's been years since I've seen either.  I love Sophia Loren, however, my feminine ideal!

Pogue - you MUST SEE NORTH BY NORTHWEST NOW!  If you want to watch it over here at my home environment on the big screen, just let me know when - I can watch it over and over.  It's a great film, great script (which I think you will love - it has so many quotable lines it's unbelievable), and is filled with the best actors.

I've never seen Two Women - haven't bought any of the PD DVDs because of the quality.  But, it's supposed to be coming out in a 2 DVD special edition.

I've not seen "Two Women" since 1961.  I remember it as powerful and very moving.

I guess not too far to jump - my mind went from "Two Women" to "Tomorrow Is Too Late". I must have seen the Pier Angeli film some years after it was released.

Good morning, all!  It seems much cooler this morning, and I hope the rains last night have blown away the heat.  I have to schlep this morning:  music to Tams-Witmark, then the recording office, where I'll be most of the day.  I have a couple of phone calls to make, an email address to track down, and some organizing of my desk which always looks like vandals have struck.

TOD:
Cary Grant:  Arsenic and Old LAce
                   Holiday
                   Philadelphia Story
                   Charade
                   North by Northwest

   Sophia Loren:  Two Women
                       Marriage Italian Style
                       A Special Day

TOD:

Cary Grant:
Bringing Up Baby
The Philadelphia Story
Arsenic and Old Lace (the best triple take in motion picture history, bar none!)
North by Northwest

Sophie Loren:

I'm embarassed to admit that the only movies I can definately recall seeing Ms Loren in are:
Houseboat
The Fall of the Roman Empire
Grumpier Old Men

I have not seen Cary Grant movies much but... North by Northwest is my favorite and I really agree with dear BK’s mention about it.

Sophia Loren: Sunflower (the best of all)
                      Two Women
                      A Special Day
                      Marriage Italian-Style
and she in Prêt-à-Porter was still gorgeous(I
didn’t like the film itself much, though.)

BK - The phrase that Richard C. used on the other chat board was "Where else can you find such information?"  It's in the thread regarding bathrooms and such at the West Coast production of WICKED.

SPOILER WARNING FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN NORTH BY NORTHWEST

Our law school drama group actually did a musical parody of NORTH BY NORTHWEST.  The movie didn't really deserve in any negative way to be parodied, but it was entirely title-driven.  The main classrooms at the school were in the Langdell Building, and they were Langdell North, Langdell North Middle and Langdell South.  So someone idly said wouldn't it be fun to call a show NORTH BY NORTH MIDDLE, and an ambitious, well-budgeted "original" (meaning all-new-book, all-new-songs) musical parody sprung from that.  One of the songs I co-wrote for it was about the fun of playing a video game and leaving your boring world behind (a theme in my life in the early 1980's).  The song and the first act were capped by our hero Thornbook ("hornbook" being a law school text term) playing a video game named CROPDUSTER which suddenly turns on him with fine special effects that almost burned down the theater during dress rehearsal but were top-notch and spectacular by opening night.

Where else but on HHW can you find such information?  :)

Hmmm...Among the DVD releases for tomorrow is the I Married Joan Collection 2.  I wasn't even aware that there was a first collection.  I just might pick up one of these.

I had the chance to crack open The Muppet Show first season collection this weekend.  I couldn't get over how entertaining these shows remain.  The skits and musical numbers are pretty much hoary old vaudeville/TV variety show quality, but the Muppets and the guest stars carry everything off with such panache that everything seems fresh.  (And I'm surprised that the guest stars from such early episodes are so willing to throw themselves into the proceedings and go along for the ride--long before the show could have gained a reputation for being a fun gig.)  We watched the whole first disc all the way through on Saturday night and there are three more to go.  Each episode gets better than the previous one, and from what I've read, the show overall got better and better season by season.  I will be collecting them all!

Good Morning!

I ended up falling asleep after a chapter or so of the book I'm currently reading.  It's not a boring book by any means, but the day, slowly but surely caught up with me.  Sleep is good.

Now I'm just continuing to clear out the cobwebs before heading over to Goodrich for today's tech...  And then who knows when I'll get back...  We're all just hoping that the "scheduled" 3:00am finish time does not have to be utilized.

DR FJL: Thank you for sharing your blister story. I, too, recently had a large blister. Mine was on the bottom of my foot - on the ball of it, to be specific. Anyway, the other night I was walking to Eckerd and the skin...well...I'll just say it isn't there anymore. I've had to keep it bandaged up for the last few days to let the new skin toughen a little. I'm bandage-free this morning.

Berniece left another bruise across the bridge of my nose this morning. She's a tough broad! I'm gonna have to make some adjustments, I think, to prevent any further bruising...

DR George: How funny that her hubby uses CPAP and actually had the cojones to wear it on TV! Good for him. I've decided if I ever become a recognizable name, I'm going to be a spokesperson for the American Sleep Apnea Association (www.sleepapnea.org).

I don't really know from Cary Grant/Sophia Loren movies. I've seen "North By Northwest," which was quite good, and I've seen "Man of La Mancha" and "El Cid," so I'll vote for those, too.

I could go on and on about Cary Grant films because he certainly made just about more classic movies than anyone and not a lot of duds.

My favorite is CHARADE but right up there are BRINGING UP BABY, HIS GIRL FRIDAY, NOTORIOUS, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, and HOLIDAY.

Yes, Charles Pogue, you need to take bk up on his offer and watch NORTH BY NORTHWEST on as large a screen as possible. The DVD is of astonishing quality, sharp as a tack, and one of the best transfers of any Hitchcock film out there. Really a one of a kind movie experience.

The only time I ever saw HOUSEBOAT was on ABC's Sunday Night Movie, and with all the assorted commercials, etc. it seemed six years long. Maybe I'd like it better if I could see it straight through, but I don't remember being particularly fond of it.

And I must ruefully admit to never being a particular fan of Sophia Loren. I was very surprised and somewhat impressed that she ended up being the best thing to me about the MAN OF LA MANCHA film (who knew she could act her way convincingly through those very difficult songs of Aldonza's), but overall, she never did much for me as an actress. However, I've never seen TWO WOMEN, so I should reserve judgment until I at least see one of her most acclaimed performances.

And another blisteringly hot day here, too. We had a big thunderstorm last night, but all the rain did nothing to cool things off. When friends have told me how cool things are in other areas of the country, I look at our predicted temperatures for the week and see nothing but highs in the high 80s and low 90s. Still summer down here!

The VARIETY review for LENNON wasn't as bad a pan as I was expecting. Though the reviewer didn't think the show worked (especially the first act), he did have good things to say about the Lennon songs in the second act, particularly one that hadn't been heard before performed by Terrance Mann and Chad Kimball among others.

Yes, they are about as awful as anything could be. I've passed four of them since age 30.

A friend of mine in high school passed one when he was in his early 20's. They had to give him an epidural to help him pass it without so much pain. He said it was the worst pain he could have possibly imagined. ::Knock on wood:: I've not had one yet and I hope to NEVER have one.

I do have a story that would make all of the men at HHW.com wince and cringe, but I won't share it in mixed company. I'll give you a hint, though...just think ZIPPER.

A fellow kidney stone sufferer and survivor gave me insight on how I could remain at home (rather than heading to the emergency room) and be able to pass a stone (provided it wasn't an oversized one that needed surgery). The last two I've had I passed at home and didn't require me being pumped full of Demerol.

BK, thanks for the forwarded email.  She got in touch with the guy, whom she does not remember.   :o

If you're going to watch Bunuel and haven't seen much of his work, I recommend starting with The Discreet Charm of The Bourgeosie, which has a lot of LOL sequences (the dinner party, especially, is quite droll) and an almost comprehensible storyline.   ;)

Oy, did we have a busy weekend.  Adair and I did a fund-raiser Saturday for the theater company where the Bacharach show played.  Classic music director story that Jose and Larry at least will appreciate.  I'm standing off to the side and some guy walks up to me and starts to say "Great piano playi--"  He gets that far, sees Adair standing behind me, and I am forgotten like a piece of trash on the highway.  He moves directly onto Adair to shower her with praise without even finishing his sentence to me.   :D

Yesterday after work we did three hours of house hunting.  Oy and vey.  Although we are getting to see a lot of tony neighborhoods I've never been in before.  Then a Tigard Pops picnic and then dessert at some friends' house who are leaving for Yellowstone next week and wanted our advice on what to do and where to stay.  I need a vacation.  Again.   ;D

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
Plainsong, by Kent Haruf
The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee

Why is everyone just sitting there like so much fish?

We have received our first two Kritzerland CD reviews (at least the first I've seen) - from Broadway's Biggest Hits, which is, I believe, a radio show (or was anyway), and a website.  I'll do these in tomorrow's notes, but here's a peek at them:

"NEW GUY IN TOWN"
GUY HAINES
Kritzerland (KR 20010-0)

Guy Haines' jazzy and fun "New Guy in Town" is a winner. Many of the 15 tracks are show tunes and he does them well. There are several unique show tunes like "I'm Past My Prime" from "Li'l Abner," the usually female torch song "Love Look Away" from "Flower Drum Song," and a wonderful "Little Red Hat" from "110 in the Shade" that is a duet with Juliana A. Hansen. There's a big rich band that accompanies Haines conducted with relish by Grant Geissman, who also does the orchestrations and arrangements with album producer Bruce Kimmel. This is the second release from Kimmel's new label and, just like "After the Ball," this is a classy album suggesting a bright future for the new company.

Grade: A

"AFTER THE BALL"
Irish Repertory Theatre Cast
Kritzerland (KR 20010-1)

It's nice to have Bruce Kimmel back producing show music albums and the debut show on his new Kritzerland label is the excellent Irish Repertory Theatre cast recording of Noel Coward's 1954 "After the Ball," a witty and clever adaptation of Oscar Wilde's "Lady Windermere's Fan." When the show opened, the signed star, Mary Ellis, once a musical theater legend, had lost most of her voice and the show was altered during tryouts eliminating much of Coward's excellent score for the role. For this version, Barry Day edited a new version from the original with some extrapolations. The show's music is lovely, some of Coward's best, and the lyrics include Coward's renowned wit and sparkle. The production's cast is excellent. Even though the production wasn't a fully staged one because the show's size would have made it cost prohibitive, this recording gives us a wonderful record of what Coward intended with this show and it's a delightful listen. As expected, Kimmel produces a classy recording with a well-illustrated and informative booklet that explains the show well. It's nice to have Kimmel back with such a nice recording and we know he will capture many interesting shows that would otherwise be overlooked for recordings.

The title of the notes today brought to mind a story the truth of which I've always wondered about.  The story goes that Carolyn Leigh was out of town with a musical and they wanted to cut part of a song, and she stormed out of the theater saying something about her rights as a member of the Dramatists Guild.  Everyone else supposedly went on about their business, fixing the song, saying oh, that Carolyn, she'll be back.  But the story goes that she showed up with a policeman shouting and pointing at her co-workers, saying something like "Officer, arrest them!  They're violating my Dramatists Guild rights!"

I haven't been able to find this story on the internet anywhere.  Does anyone know if it's true, or even partially true?

DR FJL, I've heard that story more than once.  I think Neil Simon mentions it in his REWRITES bio.

It's downright COLD here in Oakland this morning.  I closed my balcony door last night, and I pulled down the windows.

Even then, I slept under a blanker.

It only got up to F 60 degrees yesterday...and that's a lot warm than it is right now!

Now I need some verification of a theatre story:  we all know the tale of why "Momma's Talkin' Soft" was dropped from Gypsy.  But I could swear that in the past year or so that Sondheim himself discounted the story as a half-truth--that the little girl was indeed afraid of climbing up to the above stage platform, but that she was still able to satisfactorily perform the song and that the song was dropped for a completely unrelated reason.  There's been so much published lately about Sondheim that I'm not sure where I might have heard this.  Anyone have a clew?

Big Brother 6 Spoilage:

I watched "House Calls" this morning because I've become so disgusted by what has been going on in the house that I wanted to hear the reactions of Marcellus and Gretchen.

Both agree Jenn has become power-crazy.  They think Maggie is stupid because she declared herself to be "the leader" of her group in an exchange with Jenn.  Jenn said she was afraid she was going to be a huge target next week, and Maggie asked why since she (Maggie) is the "leader."

Gretchen says she admires the way Jenn has played.  Marcellas vehemently disagrees.

Both aren't certain Kaysar will be evicted since the group has been flipflopping.

I, personally, believe he will be nominated to replace Rachel, who will save herself.  I don't know that he will leave Thursday since this becomes a chance for Ivette to advocate eliminating her hated Janelle.

Still...while I'm a bit disappointed that Kaysar trusted Jennifer -- and know it has ruined the game for who I consider to be "the good guys" --  it is fun to see James manipulating the "disciples" so very well.

I ordered this a couple of weeks ago and it hasn't come yet. :'( Maybe today...or tomorrow. :-\

DR George: How funny that her hubby uses CPAP and actually had the cojones to wear it on TV! Good for him. I've decided if I ever become a recognizable name, I'm going to be a spokesperson for the American Sleep Apnea Association (www.sleepapnea.org).

A part of the episode (and some of the next) was about Matt (Kathy's husband) becoming eligible for gastric bypass surgery.  He was approved, but decided not to do it.  That was pretty brave, also!

Her character is brilliant but neurotic and not always tactful. Kyra laughed when I remarked that she had more nervous tics than Tony Shalhoub in Monk. “I take that as a compliment,” she said.

Well, he sort of...no, he actually cheated!  When he went in for his final weigh-in, he had to be a certain minimum weight before they would approve the surgery.  He added ankle weights to make up the difference and on the way to the appointment, he said he hoped that the doctors wouldn't question him gaining 23 pounds in ... however long it was since his last appointment or find the weights.  It wasn't really enough time to gain 23 pounds.  They didn't find out and he was approved, but as I said earlier, he decided not to because of some issue with his stomach.  I don't remember exactly what it was, though.

HINTS FROM HELOISE"

(From  The Guardian (http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/news/archives/2005/01/18/dont_snort_spray.html))

Quote
WD40 is not a chemical normally associated with combating illegal drug use. Defoliants over Colombia, maybe. But not WD40.

According to a report on the BBC Radio Five Live Breakfast show, Avon and Somerset police are advising Bristol bar owners to spray the household cleaner and lubricant in their bathrooms to stop cocaine use.

The spray puts an "invisible film" over toilets and basins that absorbs the cocaine when any tries to snort it off them. It instead turns it into a congealed mess. The advice comes just a few days after BBC Wiltshire reported that a pub owner in Swindon was spraying it on toilet seats because anyone who then tried to snort cocaine off them got a nose bleed.

My goodness! Another new cast member added to ALIAS for next season. Balthazar Getty has been added to the cast along with the previously announced  Rachel Nichols and French actress Elodie Bouchez. Greg Grunberg (Weiss) has already been announced as leaving the show, so the ALIAS we're going to see this fall is going to be something very close to a new show.

I'm wondering if the thinking is that even if Jennifer Garner leaves the show at the end of the season, if there are any ratings at all for ALIAS this year (hard to accomplish since EVERY network is aggressively scheduling shows for Thursday at 8 p.m. this season), ABC might renew it with this mostly new cast possibly retaining Kevin Wiseman (Marshall) and a few others for the show.

Time will tell, but it's certainly going to be a very different ALIAS from the one we're all used to.

"Big Brother 6" Spoilage:

The deed is done.  Kaysar is nominated.

Janelle was furious and read the riot act to Jennifer.  Rachel got a few things off her chest.  Kaysar was mad but the worst probably hasn't come from him.

James and the bitches (that's April, Ivette, Maggie, Jenn and Beau --- or, JamBitch, as I am now referring to them) sat around a table and worked themselves into a frenzy of convincing themselves that their lies have been true and that they've played the game right and that Kaysar and the others have played badly.

JamBitch is very sensitive to some comments Rachel made to Jenn about having put the spotlight on herself.  The funny thing is, Jenn and April and Ivette are absolutely CERTAIN they're going to be "stars" and "darlings" when the show ends.  Hah!

Jenn and April have continued to deny, among Jambitch, that they NEVER proposed backdooring Ivette last week...it was all Howie and Rachel and that Kaysar had this coming because of it.

Rationalizations are wonderful things...but JamBitch is out of its freaking head with irrationality, IMO.

Time will tell what happens.

I'd love to see Kaysar, Janelle, Howie and Rachel pack and leave the house tonight....leaving JamBitch alone to suddenly ponder what they have not pondered (all except the splendidly devious mastermind James) -- what happens when it's just them alone....who gets nominated?  How do they turn on one another?

Sigh.

Sigh.

Yes, it's inevitible that JamBitch (I like that) will have to turn on itself. I can't wait to see it happen. I would love to see Janelle win HOH next week. Wouldn't that be sweet!~

"Big Brother 6" Spoilage:

Sorry about mixing up the names Janelle & Jennifer.  You guys DID know what I meant.  I've gone by and corrected it for jane-and-johnny-come-latelies.

I tuned in for a bit and saw Maggie and Ivette sitting at an outside table talking to Kaysar, Rachel and Howie.

Apparently, Howie totally exploded...VENTED is the word he used...at April.  April accused him of being "jealous" of her...and he ridiculed her "fat husband" and "f***ing ugly dog" and asked if that was what he was supposed to be jealous of.

I cannot wait to read John Powell's transcript of that...if he uses it...he sometimes leaves ugly things out.

Maggie seemed visibly shaken and asked what they were supposed to do.  It was suggested they get off their high horses about being the "moral" ones who play with "integrity" and face the truth that they are liars.  Kaysar suggested Jenn's nomination of him today was the lowest thing anyone had ever done on BB since she swore on her life that she was nominating James...and not only that, but it violated the pact they had from the week before.

I'm sure cooler heads will say, "It's only a game and Kaysar should never have taken his finger off the button."  "He should have known never to have trusted Jenn."  I know I cringed when he did it.

Howie, on the other hand, has told them they better fight for their lives come next HOH...because if they don't win, it won't be pretty for them.

Or at least, that's how I heard what he said (which wasn't as cold or threatening...but I heard what I wanted to hear from him).

I was going to get an earlyish start on watching a DVD - I put in a relatively short film that just arrived - a region 2 DVD of Alistair MacLean's When Eight Bells Toll, which is spoken very highly of.  I began watching it, got about five minutes in and the next thing I know the phone is ringing and it's over an hour later and at least six of the eight bells have already tolled.  Can you believe it.  For whom the bell tolls, baby, that's what I'M talkin' about.  The caller was Cindy Williams - we had a nice chat and we'll be chatting again in the morning.

Jeff, if it makes you feel any better, I think I pushed Adair out of the way so I could talk to you.  Different strokes..........

"Big Brother 6" Spoilage:

The live feed is on the fish tanks...and has been for quite a while.  Howie has not let up on April since earlier this afternoon.

He has been demanding her "D.O.R.", which I take it is some form of withdrawal request (Jenn said it was a reference from "An Officer and a Gentleman."

April has been boo-hooing and sobbing and calling on God and asking each of her teammates to have her back -- "don't talk to them", "say something to them" (I wish she's make up her mind!!!), "I'm in fear", "he's attacked my family," "he shouldn't be allowed to do this," "why is he attacking me???" (that's the question Maggie is wondering about, too), and on and on.

It has been my great glee to see each of them refuse to aid her.  Ivette: "I'm not going to say anything to them unless they attack me."  Maggie: "I'm not going to say anything in response to anything they say."

April is shocked, I think, to learn that her "team" not only won't intefere but won't stop talking to/with them.

We all know, we who watch live feeds, anyway, that April is the biggest, if not 2nd biggest, bitch in the house.  She has lied to people and then lied about lying.  She truly has no honor, no morals and no sense of decency since she's been eviscerating everyone who is now against her (Howie, Rachel, Janelle and Kaysar) and calling them "mo-fos" and "F_ckers" whenever she wants to stir folks up.

I hate her to pieces. And I think her team is getting tired of her, too.  Maggie already doesn't trust her.

Last time there was a feed, Jenn had been called to Diary Room.  When the feed cut to fish tanks, JamBitch (minus Jam...who was "resting" in the gold room) were applying makeup and preparing to go outside and stare Howie and Janelle down.

I can only quiver in anticipation to learn what happened next!

P.S.  Rachel was fixing dinner...for only the five of the "outcasts."  Made a point of not including JamBitch.

Spent a good part of the evening continuing with JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG, but not quite finished. Spencer Tracy is about to give his decision, but I thought that would be a good time to stop and finish it tomorrow.

Such a wonderful film filled with great acting, a literate script, and clean, simple direction. One of the greats.

I've always wondered if it was this film or THE HUSTLER that finished second to WEST SIDE STORY at the Oscars that year. Surely it wasn't THE GUNS OF NAVARONE or FANNY, the other two nominees.

Quote
Mad Cow Rules Broken Over 1,000 Times
Monday, August 15, 2005

WASHINGTON — Inspectors have found more than 1,000 violations of rules aimed at preventing mad cow disease from reaching humans, the Agriculture Department said Monday.

A meatpacking industry official said the violations were minuscule and should not be worrisome.

"The truth is that these very low numbers ... demonstrate a remarkable level of compliance with federal regulations exceeding 99.9 percent," said Jim Hodges, president of the meatpacking industry's American Meat Institute Foundation.

Gee 99.9 % of us are perfectly safe - we just lose everybody in TAMPA!

I work with a couple of women who collect small decorative tins.  If you're just going to throw or give them away, Kathy and Mary Ann are very nice people and would be very happy to receive them.  If you're planning on selling them, well...I could act as a go-between...unless you are going to keep them and put them in storage.

Don Black... now there's a discussion.  Being the lone Lloyd Webber fan in these parts, I can say that he hasn't done much to help ALW along with his music.  The music suffers from his lyrics greatly.  With the exception of "Song and Dance"  his lyrics are mundane.  Actually, to ALW's defense, he hasn't had a good lyricist since Tim Rice, until his recent teaming with the afforementioned David Zippel which is a vast improvement over Black, Steinman and heaven forbid - Ben Elton!!!

You're not the lone ALW fan.  I enjoy (wouldn't say love) some of his shows and recordings, but much more the Tim Rice collaborations than the later shows.  And I certainly don't think he's the greatest composer ever.  I've seen Evita with Florence Lacey (loved her and it) in Seattle, Phantom in Vancouver, BC (I liked it, but I never have to see that show again) and Sunset Boulevard on Broadway with Betty Buckley (I thought it was wonderful).

They're just announcing on the local news that there was a 6.8 to 7.2 earthquake just off the coast of Japan!  It doesn't sound like anyone was killed.

Good Evening!

Back from tech... We finished just after 2:00am... Whew!  Still some spots to rough in, but those will have to wait until Wednesday afternoon and evening.  But, otherwise, a very productive day.

And now I read...

RE: Ann Crumb - I got to see here in that chamber version of Rags they did at AJT a couple of years of years ago - well, more than a couple at this point.  Great little production - and I loved the new book and structure.  And the whole show was done with a cast of 11!  Oh, and Crista Moore was in it too.

RE:  Copacabana - I played a week or two of the first (Equity) tour that went out.  That was one BIG show!  They traveled with more trailers (sets, costumes, etc.) than The Producers!.  Kind of a fun show, but for all the wrong reasons.

;)

DR elmore - I know I've asked you before... Are you going up to see Golden Apple? If so, can I come too?  Or can I at least secure a ticket through you?  *And since that's my birthday weekend...

;)

DR Matthew - I like ALW too.  Even the 'dreck'.  And Aspects is my favorite of his too.  Some of those madrigal-like sections in the second act are pretty cool.

I did play Whistle Down the Wind at the National Theatre in DC...  Great orchestrations of bad music... and, unfortunately, the production was also just not good.

I want to say something about that, but it's late and I can't think straight!
